he Santa Claus Shop, which relies solely on donations and volunteers, will soon open its doors to provide its 55th consecutive year of complimentary holiday shopping.

Families will be offered shopping hours by invitation only during the first week of December at Summit’s St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Last year, organizers had to rethink the event due to the pandemic, and the same format will be followed this year. Gift cards and gifts will be distributed, and holiday baskets will be delivered to local seniors.

This year’s Santa Claus Shop is chaired by Summit residents Elaine Chong, Nev DePetrillo, Celia O’Rourke and Teal Rodriguez, and co-chaired by Sarah Fitzsimmons, Kristen Goldman, Kiera Mathey and Katie Mucci.

The chairwomen are asking members of the community to consider donations to help them keep the holiday spirit alive for local residents in need.

Checks payable to SHIP with “Santa Claus Shop” noted on the memo line may be mailed to Santa Claus Shop, PO Box 119, Summit 07902-0119.

MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM DELIVERS MORE THAN JUST A MEAL SAGE Eldercare’s Meals on Wheels volunteer Lorelei Burns describes herself as “lousy at relaxing.”

A resident of Summit for 33 years, Ms. Burns has volunteered since 2015. What inspires this high energy woman to deliver meals two days each week, year after year? Simple, she said, it’s the meaningful relationships she has with her clients and the SAGE staff.

A former ATT executive who said she appreciates competence and structure, Ms. Burns said she feels at home with the Meals on Wheels team. “I like organizations that are successful, well-managed and get things done,” she commented.

She praised SAGE for its timely response to the pandemic, and noted, “They didn’t close their doors. They didn’t stop doing business. The rules and procedures they put in place to keep the operation running were impressive.”

The most challenging parts of being a volunteer, she said, are the losses, whether it is saying farewell to an elderly client who has died or delivering food to a client who has lost a spouse. A widow herself, Ms. Burns can empathize with their feelings of loss. Yet even with sadness, she said, the visits are positive and so necessary, as many of the meal recipients have no other daily visitors other than their volunteer. While the food is vital, “it is the visit that counts,” she explained.

The passion Ms. Burns has for giving and helping extends beyond Meals on Wheels.

She is active at the Newark Museum and North Star Academy, and has a shop at Covenant House, which provides clothes to homeless children.

Referring to SAGE, she said with modesty, “I am nothing more than a volunteer -- I have no desire to be retired.” For her, she said, SAGE represents “friends, food and home.”

The relationship she has with the non-profit is mutually beneficial.

agner Farm Arboretum’s Brite Nites Halloween-themed event has returned for its 10th season, and will continue each Thursday through Saturday during October weekends. The event showcases hand-carved and LED-lighted pumpkins, arranged in sculpture form. Updated themes and special effects have been added for the 2021 season, which features a new display of Barnegat Lighthouse.

The drive-through event, held at Wagner Farm Arboretum, 197 Mountain Ave. Warren, is contactless. Participants purchase tickets via wfafnj.org, queue up for their time slot, have their tickets scanned and then view the displays as they slowly drive down the Brite Nites Pumpkin Path. The excursion lasts approximately 20 minutes, and participants remain in their vehicles.

Timed entry tickets begin at 6:45 p.m. and are issued at 15 minute intervals until 9:45. Gates close at 10.

Ticket price is dependent upon vehicle and number of passengers: $35 for passenger cars/SUVs with a capacity of seven attendees or fewer, and $50 for any type of bus or large SUV/van with a capacity of more than seven. Buses and vans are admitted on Thursday evenings only, at 6:45, 7 and 7:15 p.m.

This is a weather-dependent event.

In the event of showers or light rain, Brite Nites is expected to go ahead, but it will depend on the condition of the fields. Heavier rain may force cancellation. In the event of extreme weather or cancellation for other reasons, a message will be posted on the WFA website by 3 p.m. and a notification will be sent to the email addresses participants provided during ticket purchase.

Brite Nites is the primary fund raising event for the Wagner Farm Arboretum, whose mission is to enrich, educate and inspire the community by increasing environmental awareness and recreational opportunities.

Union County residents still have time to apply to become poll workers for the Tuesday, Nov. 2, General Election, which this year includes voting for New Jersey gubernatorial candidates. All poll workers must attend a paid, mandatory training session, as electronic poll books are going to be used for the first time.

Poll workers will earn $200 for the day, starting at 5:15 a.m. through the close of the polls at 8 p.m.

Poll workers perform essential services on Election Day by ensuring every eligible voter is afforded an opportunity to exercise his or her constitutional right to vote.

Any Union County resident who is 18 or older and registered to vote in Union County can apply to become a poll worker.

No experience is needed. All new poll workers must attend a single-session training course. Returning poll workers will take a paid training seminar on the use of the new electronic poll books.

No matter how you decide to cast your ballot, participating in elections is one of the key freedoms of American life. This year, New Jersey has joined other states in initiating early voting for the Nov. 2 General Election.

You will be able to vote in person at several locations in Union County between Oct. 23 and 31. The closest for Summit residents is in New Providence at the Municipal Center, 360 Elkwood Ave. Early voting will take place in the gymnasium from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day except Sunday, when the polls are open from 10 to 6. The entrance is on Academy Street.

If you prefer to vote at the polls on Election Day, nothing has changed. Registered voters can vote at their regular polling place.

Back to school means Berkeley Heights is abuzz with activity.

This year, I chose to vote by mail and have submitted my ballot in advance. Although the deadline to apply to vote by mail has passed for this election, signing up to vote by mail in future elections is simple and can be completed at unioncountyvotes. org. If you decide not to mail your ballot, there is a secure drop box in the Chestnut Street parking lot at the corner of Broad Street and Morris Avenue.

It was exciting one recent Thursday to gather with FiServe CEO Frank Bisignano, Governor Phil Murphy, Senator Tom Kean, Assemblyman Jon Bramnick and Tim Sullivan from the NJEDA. FiServ will relocate approximately 1,500 employees to the 100 Connell building and create another 1,500 jobs over the next 24 months or so. We will have more about the Community Benefit Agreement that will be coming forward for a public hearing at our next council meeting.

Elections are decided by the people who take the time to vote. If you are concerned about continued excellence in Summit schools, crime prevention, clean air and water, and infrastructure improvements, it is essential to vote for those who you believe will represent your interests on Nov. 2. Thank you.

It’s the working group that will help to ensure we are in the best position possible for the next round of affordable housing obligations.

Our professionals believe the township’s position is strong. We were able to bank on the progress that has been made with our current redevelopment projects, most of which were a part of the Judgement of Repose signed in 2017.

The PBA negotiation team also met recently. Many residents may be unaware the Police Benevolent Association contract is negotiated every three years or so. I look forward to working with our police department, administrator, CFO, Council President Jeanne and Councilman Alvaro to work toward a fair and equitable contract that respects both the police department and our residents. We will be working expeditiously, as the contract ends Dec. 31.

The Economic Development Committee is working on a number of new initiatives, including streamlining the process through which businesses get all necessary permits and information to open their doors as quickly as possible. The economic video series is behind schedule. We hope to pick back up soon.

BOROUGH GEARS UP FOR A BUSY AUTUMN Fall is bustling in New Providence.

We have wonderful family-friendly events and activities all around town, and we welcome everyone to participate.

The New Providence Annual Decorated Pumpkin Contest and Trunkor-Treat, hosted by our New Providence Police in partnership with our Lions, are free, and will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. at the New Providence Community Pool Parking Lot. The Street Fair returns Sunday, Oct. 24, on Springfield Avenue between South Street and Livingston Avenue from 10 to 4.

Downtown Trick-or-Treating is Saturday, Oct. 30. Businesses with orange pumpkins on their doors or in windows will greet trick-or-treaters with candy and surprises.

This Halloween, we again invite everyone for safe, socially-distanced neighborhood trick-or-treating. There will not be any door knocking. Trick-ortreating will be between 4 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 31, and those who would like to distribute treats should place a table at the end of their driveway and spread items apart to minimize handling.

Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, along with mayor and council, began conducting a series of “Listening Sessions” to help address traffic and safety concerns of residents.

This initiative is part of a boroughwide Traffic Safety and Circulation Improvement Plan that seeks to identify potential traffic management and calming measures and strategies to enhance safety, accessibility and mobility around New Providence.

No appointments are necessary for free Covid testing two days each week at Downs Hall on the campus of Kean University, 1000 Morris Ave. Parking is also free.

“With the new variants, testing continues to be an important tool in our fight against Covid-19,” said Alexander Mirabella, chairman of the Union County Board of Commissioners. “We are proud to continue to offer this free service, and encourage all residents to get tested if they have been exposed or if they are experiencing symptoms.”

Testing takes place on Mondays from 7 to 11:30 a.m., and on Thursdays from 7 to 11:30 a.m. and from 4 to 7:30 p.m., though for the evening session, arrival by 7 is advised. The process consists of a self-administered swab that will be tested for Covid, Influenza A and Influenza B.

The Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, we ring in the season at our Christmas Walk and Holiday Festival. This festive event will feature the arrival of Santa, our New Providence Marching Band, merchant giveaways and fireworks. The New Providence Presbyterian Church will have a live nativity, tree lighting and a retelling of the first Christmas.

The following Friday, Dec. 3, our Night of a Thousand Stars Community Tree Lighting will be held in Centennial Park at 7 p.m., hosted by our New Providence Diversity Committee with help from the New Providence Lions. This free, outdoor concert-like event includes wonderful holiday programs, hot cocoa and heartwarming performances.

Kean's center opened in March 2020 as New Jersey’s first countyrun testing site, and since then, more than 153,000 PCR tests have been administered there.

The service is available to all Union County residents, whether or not they are experiencing symptoms, and there is no charge, whether or not a person has insurance.

The site is also available to all first responders and frontline health workers who are asymptomatic and are employed in Union County, no matter where they reside, and in addition is open to first responders and frontline health workers who live and work outside the county but reside in New Jersey.

NO BETTER TIME TO SHOP, SUPPORT LOCAL THAN AS WE APPROACH HOLIDAY SEASON Local businesses continue to face challenges due to Covid, and added woes include product shortages and shipping and delivery challenges.

Customers are asked to show their love for local in ways that include: Try to order a meal at least once a week from a local restaurant or food shop.

Purchase a gift card online or over the phone to use locally at a later date. Gift cards from local establishments can make ideal holiday gifts for friends, family and tough-to-buy-for colleagues.

Leave a good review online for a local merchant.

Sign up for local businesses’ email newsletters. You’ll get updated information on specials, coupons and hours of operation.

Interact with social media accounts of businesses with which you are familiar. Like their posts, follow their accounts and share what you like about them, their products and services.

If you can’t make it in person, reach out to local businesses anyway.

Many continue to provide curbside pickup, and lots offer local delivery service, too.

Understand and be supportive of hard decisions being made by local business owners. Hours may have to be reduced, customer capacity may be lessened and wait times may be longer, but owners and staff are following protocols to keep themselves and you as safe as possible. Be patient and kind.

Give thought to every purchase you make. Placing an online order via a website or big box store? Ask yourself if perhaps the same items could be purchased from – and support -- a local business.

When you’re posting online, share accounts and posts with friends and family. Write about the steps you’re taking to support businesses in local communities, and encourage others to do the same.

W HO: Township Police Benevolent Association Local 144 will host trunk or treat on Saturday, Oct. 23, in the parking lot of 100 Connell Dr., adjacent to The Grove.

W Hat: Families are invited to come in costume and travel trunk-to-trunk. Participants are asked to arrive by 11:30 to decorate their vehicles, and trunk or treating begins at noon. Families who wish to take part must decorate their trunks and leave treats for other participants.

PBA officials advise all Covid social distancing rules are to be followed, and any venue change will be announced on the PBA #144 Facebook page.

New Providence

HO:: Mayor Al Morgan announced that in his borough, there will be no door knocking “for the safety of our W HO

children and our community,” but that doesn’t mean the holiday won’t be celebrated. Trick or treating will take place on Sunday, Oct. 31, between 4 and 8 p.m. The mayor said, “Residents who would like to distribute treats should place a table at the end of their driveway and spread treats apart to minimize handling. As long as candy is individually-wrapped, no extra plastic is required. Please – no candy in bowls.”

W Hat: Mayor Morgan asked that trick or treaters maintain social distance of at least six feet from other groups, and reminded all

that masks are encouraged when social distancing is difficult.

“Please be respectful of your neighbors’ choices and decisions,” the mayor said.

In addition, the PBA will host trunk or treating in the New Providence Pool parking lot, 1378 Springfield Ave., at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23. Participating vehicles are asked to arrive by 5:30. Costume-wearing and trunk decorating are not required. For details, contact nppba132@gmail.com.

Downtown trick or treating in the borough is set for Oct. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. Stores with orange pumpkins on their doors or in windows will be offering candy and other surprises.

W HO: Downtown Summit will host costumed children on Friday, Oct. 29, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Participating businesses will post signs in their windows or on doors.

W Hat: The annual PAL Parade, co-hosted by Summit Community Programs, will take place Saturday, Oct. 23 (rain date Oct.

24). Children, teens, adults and seniors are welcome to take part, and are invited to line up at 25 DeForest Ave. at 2:45 p.m.

Departure for the march to the Village Green on Broad Street is at 3, where there will be judging, games, music and other activities until 4:15 p.m., when winners will be announced in categories to include Most 2021 Relevant, Scariest, Cutest, Most Original and Best Group. Entertainment on the Green continues until 5 p.m.

The Zovaks have always shared a passion for helping others.

Once, husband and father Matt was volunteering at a local food bank when he was approached by a man who needed a shirt for a job interview. He gave the man the shirt off his back right then and there.

Matt and his wife Rachel never envisioned being the ones seeking help. But when an accident kept Matt from work and their reduced income couldn’t cover expenses, the family found themselves living in their van.

They entered Family Promise’s shelter program and worked on employment, budgeting, and other skills. Rachel developed a career path that advanced her beyond her previous minimum wage position, and Matt recovered from his injuries and found a new job. They regained stability, and last winter, they received the keys to their own home through Family Promise’s “A Future Begins at Home” program.

Every year, Family Promise’s homelessness prevention, shelter, and stabilization services enable thousands of families like the Zovaks to overcome challenging situations and achieve lasting independence.

Since 1988, Family Promise has served families in need, and we'll continue to be there.
