NEW TURF FIELD

he Governor Livingston Highlanders honored their past and enjoyed their first victory on the school’s new artificial turf field on a recent sunny Saturday. Many of GL’s teams were in action on September 23rd when the new GL field made its debut, but the day was highlighted by a come-from-behind triumph for the Highlander Football squad, as they defeated North Plainfield by a score of 36-29. This was the first football game played on the new surface on Frey Field since the turf replacement project began on the day after GL’s 2017 Graduation. To make the day even more exciting, the Highlanders welcomed back alumni as a

celebration was held to honor the 50th anniversary of GL’s only undefeated, State Championship Football team. That Highlander squad was coached by Jack Bicknell, who later went on to find great success coaching on the college and professional levels. Perhaps Coach Bicknell’s greatest post-GL claim to fame is that he enjoyed a successful run as the Head Football Coach at Boston College, the highlight of which was Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie’s iconic last-second touchdown pass to beat the University of Miami. It was a great day for all “On the Hill.”

BERKELEY HEIGHTS CHROMEBOOKS!

tudents in Grades 3 through 5 at Thomas P. Hughes School have received new Chromebooks this year. Teachers are introducing students to the functionality of their new devices in various ways. Many Google Classrooms have already been established so that teachers can “drop” assignments into students’ accounts, and

students can share their work with peers for collaboration or review. In addition, students can play leveled “games” to practice basic skills to meet their individual needs. The students are off to a great start, and the school is planning to find new ways to enhance students’ learning experience and preparedness for the digital future.

SHOES DISPLAY LIFE!

eptember was Suicide Prevention Month. An exhibit called In Their Shoes™ was set up in the Summit High School concourse for students and staff to experience. In Their Shoes™ was created by Attitudes in Reverse® to build understanding, to encourage early intervention, and to ultimately save lives. The exhibit consists of 269 pairs of shoes to represent the New Jersey youth who ended their lives between 2013 – 2015. This exhibit helps to increase empathy and kindness towards those who might be struggling in silence, and encourages them to seek help. Members from Attitudes in Reverse®, as well as SHS Counselors and members of the Mental Health Awareness Club, were on hand to answer questions, give out resources, and offer support. Many teachers across disciplines took the opportunity to bring their classes to the exhibit for the visual experience, to talk to caring volunteers, and to meet the therapy dogs. A few examples of the cross-curricular instruction include the following: Art students experienced the exhibit and drew pictures of the shoes, while Creative Writing students viewed the exhibit and created stories about an individual who could have worn certain shoes.

Ninth grade PE and Health classes worked with Student Assistance Counselor, Amy Herber, to learn warning signs. She guided students through what they should do if they are concerned about a friend, or are personally struggling. The classes also focused on having a purpose and finding joy in life, which resulted in a happiness display. Shaping Summit Together, Students Helping Students (SHS’s Mental Health Awareness Club), the School Counseling Department, and the SHS faculty all helped raise the funds to support the program. ...If only we knew what was going on in their minds, if only we didn’t judge their journey, but rather, took a walk In Their Shoes.™

SIGN LIGHTS UP COLUMBIA

here’s a good sign that the school year is underway at Columbia Middle School!

Thanks to a funding partnership between the Berkeley Heights Board of Education and the Columbia Middle School PTO, this new sign has been installed near the Plainfield Avenue entrance to the school. The public can look forward to regularly-updated messages and reminders. You will note that one side of the sign displays information about Columbia Middle School, while the other side provides news about Board of Education meeting dates and other district-wide events. The sign will not be in operation during late night and early morning hours.

KENT PLACE SCHOOL OPENS 32,000+ SQUARE FOOT CENTER FOR INNOVATION

he Kent Place community recently gathered together to celebrate the ribbon cutting of its brand new, more than 32,000 square foot Center for Innovation (CFI). Students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 gathered on the school’s lawn wearing green and gold commemorative ribbons (Kent Place School colors) to celebrate the grand opening. “What was once a forward-thinking idea, is now a forward-moving state-of-the-art building with facilities for the arts, mathematics, STEM, global learning, the library, the Innovation Lab and our Maker-space,” stated Kent Place Head of School Dr. Jennifer Galambos. “The facility will energize and support our students in their thinking, their learning, their creating and their making far into the future.” The CFI is an interactive hub for the study of STEAM subjects; mathematics classrooms and labs, a media and technology center, science and engineering laboratories, a visual arts center and a multidisciplinary space for research and global learning. These areas

are flexible, innovative, integrated and transformative in their arrangement in order to spark the imagination and curiosity of the many and varied kinds of ambitious, scholarly and motivated students at Kent Place.

Campaign Steering Committee Chair, Maria Chrin of Short Hills thanked the generous donors for helping to give Kent Place students a state-of-the-art new learning environment that is unlike any other school in the area. Mayor of Summit, Nora Radest also addressed the crowd: “This is a spectacular and beautiful facility that will enable joyful learning and teaching. I know that the work and education that will occur in this building will significantly improve your community, the Summit community and the world.”

Meals Provided On Holidays Recognized

he Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad has presented a plaque with sincere appreciation to the Grand Summit Hotel for its generous provision of hot meals on all major holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s eve/day to the Summit EMS, Summit Police Department and Summit Fire Department. This tradition was established several years ago when Summit EMS realized that on many holidays it is difficult for crews to find restaurants open for meals. Member Dave Schempp approached the Grand Summit Hotel to request food delivery on major holidays. The Grand Summit Hotel readily agreed and extended the outreach to include Summit police and fire departments. Groundbreaking for Summit Community Center

new era has begun for Summit residents with the ground breaking of the new renovation and reconstruction of the Summit Community Center. The Center has served the residents of Summit since 1954. Located at 100 Morris Avenue, it is a place that consistently touches the lives of thousands of families. There is no other public facility in Summit that has served such a diverse group of residents. The renovation and expansion of this community treasure will serve to enhance the programs and services offered and truly make it the place “Where the Community Thrives.” Currently the Community Center houses 50 different programs servicing 900 to 1500 residents per week. This includes 700 children in youth basketball, 250 summer campers, 200 seniors and 150 children with special needs. The new addition will accommodate more programs and activities in a state of the art facility. ARBORETUM Awarded $8,000 from Kessler Foundation

he mission of Reeves-Reed Arboretum is to engage, educate, and enrich the lives of our constituents to become better stewards of nature and the planet. With an ever increasing visitorship – now over 100,000 annually – the Arboretum acknowledges and embraces its responsibility to make the grounds safe and welcoming to all our visitors in order to fully embody the goals of our mission. In 2017, the Arboretum initiated Phase One of a two-phased Accessibility Project. The Kessler Foundation, of East Hanover, NJ, has just awarded ReevesReed Arboretum a grant for $8,000 towards the completion of the first phase of this ambitious project. “The Arboretum was recently chosen the “Best Garden in New Jersey” by readers of NJ Family. To be counted alongside some magnificent sites in New Jersey – the Garden State—is

a reflection on our ability to engage our constituency both creatively and emotionally,” according to RRA Executive Director, Frank Juliano. “Once Phase One is complete this fall, we will work hard to raise funds in order to realize the more encompassing scope and requirements of Phase Two.” Additional support for Phase One of the Arboretum’s Accessibility Project has been provided by The Hyde and Watson Foundation, the E.J. Grassmann Trust, the Union Foundation, the Manley-Winser Foundation, and RRA board designated funds from the Mary Reinhart Stackhouse Foundation.

Receives Donation from

elgene Corporation recently awarded SAGE Eldercare a generous donation for the Spend-A-Day adult day health center. Spend-A-Day is the longest-running medical adult day program in New Jersey and serves about 130 families in Union, Essex, Somerset, and Morris counties. Operating Monday through Friday year-round, Spend-ADay provides cognitive and physical stimulation, health monitoring, access to transportation and health care providers, and social interaction. Daily meals ensure that nutrition and special dietary requirements are met.

“The United States population is aging, there is the increasing threat of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and there are challenges of caregiving and rising cost of care,” said Angela Sullivan, SAGE Executive Director. “This grant helps Spend-A-Day in its aim to offer safe and social environment, and preserve independence and prevent institutionalization for older adults who are disabled or cognitively impaired, while providing thorough support and respite for their caregivers.”

SAGE Eldercare 2017-18 Senior Resource Guide Available

hether you are a caregiver of an aging parent, an older adult who needs help with meals and other services, or an organization that would benefit from local resources for seniors, the SAGE Eldercare Senior Resource Guide is a valuable tool. The 2017-18 SAGE Eldercare Senior Resource Guide is being circulated to local senior centers, libraries, churches and synagogues, medical facilities, and other outlets that serve older adults and their families. It is a free reference

guide that describes available services and offers advice for older adults wishing to remain independent in their own homes. The guide is distributed in Union, Essex, Morris, and Somerset Counties. Summit Downtown Stakeholders Meeting includes Updates on Holiday Events and Collaborative Work with City.

Summit Downtown, Inc. (SDI) recently shared information about what’s happening for the holiday season this year and cooperative projects with the City. Mayor Nora Radest, City Engineer and Deputy Director of Department of Community Services Aaron Schrager, Rebecca Cohan from the Summit Free Public Library spoke about partnering with SDI on various projects. SDI Chair Tony Melchionna welcomed guests for the evening and shared information about some new businesses that have opened or are opening soon including, Alba, Greene Street, Serena & Lily, The Collective, and Bonji Bowl.

Nancy Adams and SDI’s Assistant Director Kathryn Best shared upcoming holiday events including a shopper passport event kicking off on Small Business Saturday, live music throughout the downtown during the holiday season, Gifts to Go, and horse and carriage rides all creating that wonderful holiday atmosphere to bring people downtown to shop and support Summit for their holiday gift giving. Summit Downtown revealed it has purchased all new holiday wreaths, which will decorate the downtown light posts this season! SDI also announced a new website coming in 2018, having just received proposals for its redesign and looking to award the contract in the coming weeks. The Stakeholder meetings are held a few times each year for the business owners and their employees and downtown property owners.

Oct 29 Summit Farmers Market Pumpkin Painting Children of all ages are invited to embrace their inner artist and paint a pumpkin at the Summit Farmers Market! Summit High School music students will canvas the City of Summit on Sunday, Nov. 5, between noon and 4 p.m., as participants in the Summit Music Parents Association’s (SMPA) Annual Pledge Day. In this fundraising tradition, band, orchestra and chorus students will ask the community for financial support that is vital to the music programs across all of Summit’s public schools. The money collected is used to help fund scholarships, replace instruments and equipment and bring in renowned musicians to teach master classes. Pledge Day also helps subsidize music trips to festivals and competitions. This year’s trip will be to Nashville, TN where each group will showcase their talents. Santa Claus Shop in Summit Gears Up!

he Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families, providing its 51st consecutive year of complimentary holiday shopping. The shop serves more than 400 low-income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights who are referred by local social services agents. The Santa Claus Shop guests personally select a household item, new clothing for each member of their immediate family, a hat and mittens, a book, and a new toy for each child. Local volunteers are responsible for the shop setup, personal shopping services for each guest, gift-wrapping and clean up.

With the monetary donations from area residents, local organizations and businesses, the Santa Claus Shop can purchase the gifts that allow less fortunate neighbors to experience the joy of holiday giving without financial burden. To keep the holiday spirit alive for those in the community, the Santa Claus Shop chairwomen ask for checks to be made payable to SHIP, with Santa Claus Shop noted on the check’s memo line, and mailed to the Santa Claus Shop, P.O. Box 119, Summit, NJ 07901. The ability to make an online donation is also available at www.summitsantaclausshop.com.

This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit.
