T

his fall, the renovated Summit YMCA reopens to a community eager to come inside. Staff and members have been ready to reunite in the Y’s iconic brick building on the corner of Maple Street and Broad Street. Inside, you’ll find residents bond as they better their lives through enriching activities ranging from fitness classes to volunteerism. The Summit YMCA construction project, which began in May 2023, marks the start of a new era for this beloved local non-profit. Last renovated in 1998, the first and

second floors of the building now reflect a modern, open concept space that can serve up to 6,000 families. “Our goal was to maximize the usable space of this 82,000-square-foot building, so we can provide even more individuals with best-in-class offerings,” said President and CEO Paul Kieltyka. “We are about bringing the community together, and this exceptional space will allow us to do exactly that.” The remodeled Summit YMCA comes complete with state-of-the-art fitness centers across two floors, a high-tech Teen Center, lounges where neighbors can gather and a new Kid Zone for those in need of exceptional childcare services while they utilize the Y. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of its swim team, the building also features a stunning back hallway with photos that capture the spirit of the team throughout the years. “This building is, and always has been, more than brick and mortar,” said Summit Area YMCA Board of Trustees Chair Maria Brugg. “It is about providing a valuable resource to our neighbors. From financial assistance to free programs that include food distribution and activities for youth with special needs, the Summit YMCA is and will continue to be a safety net for many generations to come.” The Summit Area YMCA is known as a leader in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With the help of generous donations, the Summit

Area YMCA provides financial assistance to follow through on its commitment to being a community hub where people from all economic backgrounds can reap the physical and mental health benefits of socialization.

As the Summit YMCA reopens, its staff members invite everyone to come inside to not only enjoy its first-rate fitness centers but to also take part in meaningful community interactions. Local residents can currently take advantage of a seven-day free trial. Visit www.thesay.org/belong today to set up a tour.

wo talks remain in this year’s lecture series, “Fall in Love with Trees,” a partnership with the City of Summit's Shade Tree Advisory Committee and the Reeves-Reed Arboretum. "Now in its fourth year, this series is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring awareness to important topics so that as a community we can care for and protect one of our greatest assets -- trees," said the arboretum’s Director of Horticulture, John Beirne. “And I’m very excited about our TikTok Video Fest created by natureloving kids in our community.” The free lectures take place Thursdays from 6:30 – 8 p.m., both on-site and virtually, and are appropriate for teens and adults. Registration is encouraged, as space is limited. In-person adult attendees will receive a free six-month individual membership to the arboretum. Oct. 19 is the Eco-Action TikTok Viewing Party. Presented will be video

creations from our community's teens, who show what eco-action means to them and share their vision of a cleaner, greener world. Pizza will be served. Know a teen who would like to enter? Visit cityofsummit.org/stac. The Nov. 2 topic is “Trees in a Changing Climate: A Homeowner's Guide,” presented by Guy Sternberg, founder and owner of Starhill Forest Arboretum in Illinois. Many scientists agree the climate is becoming increasingly unstable. How will this affect our most treasured and permanent landscape plants, our trees? Why should we be concerned, and what should we do? Learn about expected trends for our landscapes and about the importance of species, provenance and diversity. The Shade Tree Advisory Committee is charged with creating an inventory of the city's significant historic and landmark trees, makes recommendations for the preservation of landmark and historic trees, and provides input on the city's tree management program.

The Reeves-Reed Arboretum is a nonprofit public garden that in 2024 will be celebrating 50 years as an arboretum, a living museum of trees. It is at 165 Hobart Ave., Summit. To register for programs, visit reeves-reedarboretum.org. For details, call 908-273-8787, x1920.

Nearly three dozen historic sites will open their doors – with free admission – during Union County’s Four Centuries weekend, set this year for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22. With some exceptions, sites will be open both days from noon to 5.

peruse the materials in the archives at the Mason Room, which include maps, photos, newspapers, journals and other records that highlight New Providence History.

Many locations have special events planned, and most offer collectible Union County history trading cards. In addition, all sites will have Union County Passports that can be ink-stamped at each location.

Twin Maples, now home of the Fortnightly Club, is a Colonial Revival estate built in 1918 just east of downtown with a façade that resembles the White House. Tours include the home’s ballroom and the “secret bathroom” constructed under a flight of stairs.

For Details, Visit ucnj.org.

Berkeley Heights

The township’s Deserted Village is annually among the weekend’s most popular destinations. David Felt’s 1800s former industrial community will host hayrides, apple cider pressing and quill pen writing, plus the chance to meet costumed interpreters representing people from the village’s past, including Mr. Felt himself.

New Providence

The borough’s historical society will open the doors of its Salt Box Museum, a mid-1800s farmhouse, and will also have volunteers staffing the Mason Room at the nearby library. Visitors are invited to tour the Salt Box and to

Headquarters of the Summit Historical Society, the 1741 Carter House will be open for informal tours that include the Colonial Kitchen, a Victorian Era library, a modern archives room and a garage that is home to a decommissioned 1920s Summit Fire Department Chemical Engine. Photos are encouraged. Open on Sunday only, the Reeves-Reed Arboretum features 13.5 acres of pastoral lawns and woodland trails. On Sunday, Oct. 22, its Wisner House, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, will be open from 10 to 4.

The city’s Wallace Chapel AME Zion Church is also National Register-listed. On Saturday at noon and on Sunday at 1 p.m., its pastor, the Reverend Denison Harrield, will present a lecture on the history of Wallace Chapel and on Dr. Florence S. Randolph, a civil rights and suffrage activist with strong ties to Summit and to the Wallace congregation.

Of Special Interest

Sites of special interest in other Union County towns over the weekend include: The Shady Rest Country Club in Scotch Plains was the first African-American owned golf and country club in the U.S., where Four Centuries events will include mini golf and a putting contest. On Saturday there will be horseback rides, and on Sunday live jazz will be featured. Open 12-4 both days, the Fanwood Train Station is the oldest remaining railroad station in Union County. It will host an exhibit of quilts from the Victorian Era through the 20th century. Hillside’s Evergreen Cemetery was created in 1853, and is considered a museum of funerary art. There are more than 10,000 monuments on its grounds, and a tour brochure is available at Woodruff House, also in Hillside. The Elizabeth Public Library, open on Saturday only, is Union County’s last remaining active Carnegie Library. The building is ADA-compliant and is hosting an exhibit called “Hauntings of Union County.”

ew Providence Historical Society Cemetery Tours of the New Providence Presbyterian Church will be offered again this fall.

The cemetery, near the corner of Passaic Street and Springfield Avenue, was founded in 1737 and is the final resting place of more than 2,000 local residents, including 59 veterans of the Revolutionary War. Upcoming tour dates include Saturday, Oct. 21, at 1 and 2 p.m., as part of the borough historical society’s participation in Union County’s Four Centuries weekend. In addition, there will be tours on Saturday, Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day. All tours are limited to 20 people. The tours will last approximately 45 minutes, and participants will learn about the history of the cemetery and cemetery folklore, and will visit the final resting places of the founding families of New Providence and Revolutionary War soldiers. To reserve a spot, send an e-mail to npcemeterytours@gmail.com with the number of people who will be attending. The group will meet in the church parking lot at 1307 Springfield Ave., and tours will be conducted by New Providence Historical Society member and trustee John Sponauer.

Harvest 2023

• She served as the president of the PTO at both Lincoln-Hubbard and Summit High, fostering a strong connection between schools and families. We were saddened to learn former Mayor and Common Council President Ellen Dickson passed away on Sept. 24. Ellen's commitment to Summit was deep. She and her husband Chip made the city their home for more than two decades, watching their three children flourish and graduate from Summit Public Schools. Ellen was a beacon of community enhancement, deeply understanding that the essence of a thriving community is embedded in the spirit of giving. Her guidance and steadfast support nurtured and molded many future leaders of Summit. For those of you who did not know her, Ellen was a dedicated public servant who devoted two terms to Summit's Common Council, followed by election as Summit's mayor in November 2011. In these roles, she conveyed an extraordinary ability to lead with determination and creativity, infusing a sense of optimism and camaraderie into city governance. Her leadership was characterized by a genuine appreciation for the hard work and dedication of city employees. She completed her term as mayor in 2015. During her 20 years in Summit, Ellen's worked diligently for the benefit of our community:

Happy Fall to everyone, though weather-wise it seems we have had a comeback of summer in early October, which is welcomed after the record-breaking amount of rain received in September in our area. Along with the warm sunshine, it has been really nice to connect with everyone again while falling back into a routine attending events and committee meetings.

• Ellen was an active member of the Board of School Estimate, where her insights and dedication helped shape the future of education in our city. • Her contributions extended to the Zoning Board, where she lent her expertise for five years, ensuring responsible development in Summit.

The Economic Development Committee (EDC) met to rededicate itself to its mission, post pandemic. We will continue to make this a priority for 2023. One of the programs that we are getting involved in is the #UCLOVESSMALLBIZ. The county has developed a website with links to local businesses and is offering promotional materials from Small Business Saturday until the holiday shopping season. I have asked Jeanne and the DBC to help out the EDC to take advantage of this great new initiative. We are also hoping to have a guest speaker at our next EDC meeting. I made a request for the NJ Economic Development Authority Intergovernmental Affairs director, Medinah Mohammad, to speak at our next meeting. We are still requesting a representative from Nokia to serve on the EDC Committee.

• In 2009, she served as Council President, showcasing her ability to lead and collaborate effectively. • She helped lead the effort to fund the Summit Free Market building project, fortifying the city's commitment to sustainability. Ellen’s dedication earned her the Boy Scouts of America Good Scout Award in 2011 and the Summit Business and Professional Women’s Woman of the Year designation for her unwavering support of women in business. Her legacy is one of kindness, generosity and mentorship in the community she loved dearly. Thank you, Ellen, for your service and support. Rest in peace.

The township will continue to find new ways to support our local businesses! Angie D. Devanney Mayor Berkeley Heights
