he Summit Board of Education has approved the appointment of Dr. Donna Gallo as Principal of Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.

Dr. Gallo began her career in the Bridgewater Raritan Regional School District as a Special Education Teacher.

Following that, Dr. Gallo joined the Millburn Township Public School District as the Special Education Supervisor for grades 6-12, and subsequently became the Assistant Principal in Millburn High School.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS SUPERINTENDENT TO RETIRE

J

hudith Rattner, Superintendent of Schools in Berkeley Heights since 2005, has announced her retirement. Her final day in the system will be in mid October.

Rattner joined the Berkeley Heights School District in August 2000, when she was appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent. She became the District's Superintendent of Schools in late 2005.

Ms. Ratner has been honored by many organizations for her efforts, most recently by the NJ Council of Education as the 2018 “Distinguished Educator”.

here are just some of the items reported to the board of eductation by students Mikayla Sanchez and Alexander Janiak • Student journalists have been busy covering the excellence of our sports program at the beginning of the season. The Highlander Football team played an impressive game against Arthur L. Johnson, winning their season-opening game 21-14.

• The GLHS Girls Soccer team performed well during its scrimmages and was pushed to play hard in its game against Kent Place.

• The Highlander Boys Soccer is looking forward to a victorious season

• The GL Volleyball team moved up to the Mountain Division of the Union County Conference this year and they are excited to play against stronger competition.

• Even though it is only the second week of school, students are already organizing events and getting involved in clubs and activities. Some clubs will not be active until later in the school year, or at least until the Club Expo, while others have already begun activities.

• During the summer, the Environmental Club members weeded GL’s rain gardens and learned about native plants while preparing the GL campus for the start of school.

• Also during the summer, the Technology Student Association attended the National TEAMS Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. The GL students

competed against other schools on the national level with two junior teams and also benefitted from a great team-building experience.

• Many other clubs have also become active. The Junior Statesmen of America recently set its goals for the year: to attend the Fall, Winter, and Spring Congress. This school year will be the first time JSA is planning to attend the Spring Congress • Along with the start of all the clubs, the GL chapters of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society have begun their application processes for returning Juniors and Seniors.

Overall, the clubs and activities offered at GLHS have just begun and many students are also just starting to join these clubs and attend the activities as they explore their interests

Historic Mural Automated On Wall Behind Diner!

S

ummit Downtown, Inc. became one of the first on the East Coast to install a large mural of a historic photo of Union Place on the side of 7 Union Place (Pizza Vita).

Main Street New Jersey (MSNJ) reached out to towns over the summer to see if any would be interested in a bulk purchase of installations by a company called Sprayprinter. SDI’s Board of Trustees thought it was a great idea, and SDI proceeded with securing a property and artwork.

As part of the Arts & Cars festival the mural was painted on the side of (the building at) 7 Union Place by a robotic spray paint printer that crawled along the wall to create a giant dot-matrix painting of the historic photo approved by the Summit Historical Society.

Summit is the first of 9 other New Jersey downtowns to undertaken the project.

Litter is Going DOWN!

T

he New Jersey Clean Communities Council has issued a comprehensive report that shows litter along streets and highways in the state has been reduced by 53 percent over the past 13 years.

Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights have all been participants in the Council’s Clean Communities programs for the past twenty-five years and are part of this exciting result.

“Litter is unsightly and can impact quality of life. Litter cleanup is a crucial part of protecting our natural resources,” said Assistant Commissioner Mark Pedersen of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Site Remediation and Waste Management Program.

The study, conducted by Environmental Resources Planning, LLC., shows that municipalities and counties across the state have effective litter abatement programs in place. The study results were based off a litter survey conducted in 2004, and the follow-up study conducted this year of 94 roadways statewide.

“This reduction was broadly seen throughout New Jersey: in all regions, all locales -- 93 percent of the sites surveyed,” said Council Executive Director Sandy Huber. “It is important to note this survey did not include our beaches, which

may show a different composition of litter.”

ERP researchers attribute the reduction of litter to state Clean Communities programs that have been strengthened since 2004. With a solid funding base provided by the state Clean Communities Act, NJCCC has expanded its network of Clean Communities coordinators, established a coordinator training program through the Rutgers Office of Continuing Professional Education, and set up an online statistical report system designed to track the progress of local programs.

58 Cadets Graduate from 2018 Summit Police Summer Youth Academy

T

he Summit Police Department graduated 58 cadets from two sessions of its 2018 Summer Youth Academy in year 14 of the popular police department program that is designed to provide young people ages 11 to 14 with an understanding of the function and role of the police officer in the community.

“The mission of the Summit Police Youth Academy is to provide young people with an opportunity to learn respect for law enforcement, assume personal responsibility and an understanding of the importance of teamwork,” explains Summit Police Chief Robert Weck. “This is accomplished through positive interactions with local police officers and an introduction to the challenges of responsibility of police work. We are extremely proud of our 2018 graduates and thankful to the officers that initiate this excellent program.”

During boot camp, cadets experience drills and physical workouts that are similar to training completed by police recruits at the John H. Stamler Police Academy. Youth Academy cadets receive an overview of criminal investigations, engage in evidence recovery and patrol tactics, and simulate the processing of crime scenes, high-risk motor vehicle stops, and emergency vehicle operation driving golf carts alongside an instructor. They also receive instruction from Summit Fire Department on its operations and response.

During a visit to the police academy in Scotch Plains, cadets competed on an obstacle course, received unarmed self-defense

instruction and firearms simulator training to demonstrate the splitsecond decision-making police officers frequently need to make.

Cadets attended demonstrations from specialized Union County K-9 Unit, SWAT Team, Bomb Squad units. Graduates also performed drills in uniform as participants in Summit’s National Night Out Against Crime on August 8.

Summit Restaurant Week Photo Contest Winners

ver thirty downtown restaurants participated in Summit Downtown’s 10th Annual Restaurant Week with prix fixe menus, specials, and more

The week began with a special edition of Summit Street Sounds featuring live music throughout the downtown. For the fourth year in a row, Summit Downtown, Inc. hosted a Restaurant Week Photo Contest. A delicious photo of Winberie’s Lobster Roll made with chunky lobster salad, lettuce, and avocado, on a New England roll served with coleslaw and French fries won Catherine Goncalves the Peoples’ Choice Award for 2018 Melanie Cohn, Executive Director of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, had the difficult task of choosing the Best in Show winner. Cohn remarked that it was a very difficult choice, but ultimately awarded Annie Stower’s photo of a sandwich from Batavia Café top honors.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors Now Required in All Buildings

S

ummit Fire Chief Eric Evers asked us to inform businesses of new code regulations that are now in effect pertaining to carbon monoxide detection. It’s also good information for your home!

New Jersey recently adopted a rule modifying the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) and the Uniform Fire Code (UFC) to require Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors in all businesses, commercial properties and all use groups. Carbon monoxide is primarily a concern in buildings with fuel-burning appliance. If a building has natural gas or oil fired appliances such

as a furnace, boiler, water heater, stove, clothes dryer, etc, then CO detection will be required.

All buildings with fuel-burning appliance must now comply; the law is currently in effect. Businesses can expect the requirement to be enforced during the Fire Department annual fire inspections.
