Dr. Elizabeth Fagan is Summit’s Hometown Doc

R

emember when family physicians made house calls and had more than a few minutes for their patients?

Well, that service is now back. Dr. Elizabeth Fagan has opened Summit’s first concierge medical practice, allowing her to provide accessible, personalized care. She calls her practice Hometown Doc because she is returning family medicine to its root values of compassion and clinical excellence.

When you step into her office, located at 12 Bank Street, Suite 201 in downtown Summit, the room feels like coming into her home, since it is welcoming and comfortable, not clinical. Dr. Fagan greets you at the door, and patients enjoy 24/7 direct access to her. Since Dr. Fagan accepts only a limited number of patients, her visits are

unhurried and everyone receives personalized care. And, if you cannot come into Summit to her office, Dr. Fagan makes house calls within a 5-mile radius of her office!

Dr. Fagan earned her AB from Harvard College, completed post-baccalaureate pre-med coursework at Barnard College and Columbia University, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College with her MD. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Overlook Medical Center, worked for Atlantic Health Systems and Summit Medical Group, and now has opened Hometown Doc. Dr. Fagan is an active member of the Summit community, where she lives with her family. She currently serves as President of the Summit Board of Health, is a board member at The Connection for Women & Families and the Summit Lacrosse Club, is involved in her children’s schools, and is a youth sports coach in her spare time!

erkeley Heights residents and local organizations will get to work on Saturday, September 27, when the annual Clean Communities Clean-Up Day takes place.

Known as “Slam Dunk the Junk,� the clean-up will run from 9 am to 12 noon, when litter will be picked up from various areas in town, at parks, playgrounds, and other public spaces.

After cleaning up the litter and recyclables in their assigned areas, volunteers return to the Community Center and enjoy hot dogs, drinks and games. If the event needs to be cancelled due to bad weather, it will be held the next day, Sunday, September 28, from 12 noon to 3 pm.

Some of the groups who have participated in the past include the Berkeley Heights Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts; the Gov. Livingston HS football team; Our House, Inc.; the Gov. Livingston HS Rotary Interact Club; the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club, school PTAs, and more. A few of the non-profits who have benefited over the years include the

SEF Grant Supports Quidditch Club at Lincoln-Hubbard School Lincoln-Hubbard (LH) School in Summit has a new Quidditch Club thanks to a grant from the Summit Educational Foundation. The sport of Quidditch originated in the Harry Potter books written by J.K. Rowling, and it has been adapted for “muggle” or non-magical play. Muggle Quidditch has spread and is now played on five continents. There are many different ways of playing Quidditch, but the most commonly used set of rules are those given by the International Quidditch Association.

The goal of the SEF grant was to introduce an alternative physical game and activity besides traditional sports. Students would learn the skills/positions and rules of the game while being encouraged to read related literature.

Nick Murray, the LH teacher and grant author, explains, “Overall, I wanted to teach Quidditch Club members the importance of teamwork and the willingness to try new things. The club has ‘incentive mechanics’ that use reading and playtime logs to encourage students to read

and play in addition to participating in the club. My goal has been to reward students for their work on and off the field. They start with a foam broom, then move up to bamboo brooms and then to tournament brooms. The goal is to log 50 hours total by the end of the session.”

Quidditch is a coed sport where girls and boys compete at the same level, and the students are enthusiastic about it. Tristan says, “It is more about the team and fun, with a little math.” Calla agrees, explaining, “I like that it was a book and a movie and now we can play it. I like that it’s not that simple to play --there are many rules and lots of equipment.”

If you see some LH students with brooms and bats, quaffle balls, bludgers, and a person called a “snitch” running around, you’ll know you’re in the midst of a Quidditch game!

Area High School Seniors Awarded Scholarships The Suburban Chamber of Commerce Foundation awarded three $1500 scholarships at the end of the school year in June. Max Graeb (Summit High School) won the Perry Root/William B. Stampes Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to a Summit High senior at graduation. He plans to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he will enroll in the Farmer School of Business. His extracurricular activities may include club sports and student council. Erin Trella, a graduate of Gov. Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights, was awarded the Jo Ciullo Memorial Scholarship. She is heading south to James Madison University in Virginia where she plans to major in nursing and to continue with her community service work, most likely by pledging into a sorority which is active with service work n the local community. Andrew Scharf from New Providence High School won the New Providence Scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Summit and New Providence also awarded several scholarships to seniors from

both high schools. Each winner received a one-time award of $3000.

The three New Providence students were Catherine Canete, who plans to pursue a degree in the music industry, attending law school after college to become an entertainment lawyer; Clare Flanagan, who is interested in English and Human Physiology; and Kirsten Peterson, who plans to major in Human Biology or Biological Sciences, on a pre-med track.

Kent Place Students Wear Red to Raise Awareness about Kidnapped Nigerian Students Before school ended last May, the Kent Place Upper School organization, GLAMD (Girls Learning and Making a Difference) asked all students, faculty and staff to wear red to raise awareness about the nearly 300 Nigerian students who were kidnapped from their school a few weeks before. The hastag #BringBackOurGirls has become a global call for action. GLAMD representatives wanted the school to wear red to show support for #BringBackOurGirls and for women’s and human rights as a whole. (Many of the students are still missing today.)

From Summit High School, the Rotary Club awarded scholarships to Michael Le, who plans to major in finance and business; Daniel Restrepo, who is going to Union County College this fall and has plans to transfer to Drew University to study Psychology; Lauren Sormani who will concentrate on International Affairs/Political Science/Economics; and Angelica Trindade who will be studying Anthropology at college.

SCC Sets Date for Annual Golf Outing The Suburban Chamber of Commerce is ready for a day of golf, Monday, October 6, at Basking Ridge Country Club. Their annual Golf Outing is a relaxing day of golf, networking, BBQ lunch, cocktail reception, dinner buffet, a silent auction, and prizes.

The lovely Basking Ridge Country Club will once again be the course that chamber members and their guests will play, and a full day is planned. Registration and a practice session begin at 11 am, with lunch, a Putting Contest, the Shotgun Start all following. At the end of the day, the “19th hole” will offer cocktails in the lounge, with dinner and the auction to follow.

Originally founded as “Communities on Cable,” and called TV-36, it covered five towns: Summit, Springfield, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, and Millburn/ Short Hills. Smythe Volvo Has Grand Opening!

Smythe Volvo recently hosted a grand opening celebration in their new state-of-the-art showroom, located at River Road in Summit.

Smythe Volvo, one of the longest standing Volvo dealers in the U.S., is now one of the largest!

Mayor Ellen Dickson began the festivities with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Kevin Flanagan, President of Smythe Volvo Inc., delivered a welcoming speech to the 200 guests, followed by Tony Nicolosi, President and CEO of Volvo Cars North America. Volvo executives from around the world were present at the event, along with a special guest appearance from New York Giants running back, Rashad Jennings.

The guests were treated to

“Stuff The Bus” Campaign Exceeds Expectations The United Way of Greater Union County’s Summer School Supplies Drive collected over 600 backpacks and lots of new school supplies for students who will need them for back-to-school this September. The Suburban Chamber of Commerce was one of the drop-off locations this past summer, where a

large box was filled with all sorts of new school supplies. The supplies are going to United Way agencies in Union County.

Chatham Community Concert Band Seeks Members The Chatham Community Band, under the direction of Brian Conti, an allvolunteer adult band that provides music entertainment in Chatham and surrounding areas, is open to adult members who wish to expand their musical experiences in an instrumental concert band format.

The band seeks musicians in woodwind,

brass and percussion backgrounds.

Rehearsals are held at the Chatham High School on Tuesday evenings from 7:309:00PM, mid-September through June.
