The Dominican Nuns Honor Local Individuals

t the Third Annual Dominican Nuns Gala on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Grand Summit Hotel, the Dominican Nuns of Summit will pay tribute to three honorees. Buddy Fortunato, Owner/Publisher of The Italian Tribune, Mark Giangiulio, General Manager/Managing Agent of the Grand Summit Hotel; and the Ippolito Family of Paul Ippolito Memorial have each played significant role in helping the nuns fulfill their sacred mission: to offer their hearts and prayers for the salvation of the world, and to provide a place of welcome, comfort and hope for all those who visit their chapel.

BUDDY FORTUNATO has long been a dynamic, dedicated member of the metropolitan area’s large Italian American community, and a champion for Italian heritage and culture in the United States. He had an initial career in finance after college, followed by eight years in the New Jersey State Assembly. But his love for and pride in his Sicilian heritage eventually led him to purchase The Italian Tribune in 1999 and take the helm as publisher. Under his leadership, the scope and influence of the English language Italian newspaper has increased on a grand scale.

A veteran of the hospitality industry, Mark Giangiulio began working at the Grand Summit Hotel in 1994 after serving as Director of Sales & Marketing for the Palm Air Resort & Spa. Prior to that, he was Director of Food & Beverage at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. It was when he first came to Summit, he says, that he immediately reached out to his neighbors “on the corner” and called to ask if there was anything he could do for them. After discovering that the Dominican Nuns could use some assistance with their holiday meals, Giangiulio responded by providing them with prepared three-course dinners several times a year.

He has also helped with kitchen equipment, repairs and essential interior work. “Over the years, the Dominican Nuns of Summit have become true friends and I deeply value our relationship,” says Giangiulio.

The goal of the Centennial Campaign is to raise $4 million (they are more than halfway there) for a 5,500 square foot new wing that will fulfill these needs, and more. Tickets to the Gala, which is co-chaired by Gina Wood of Mendham and Susan Janazzo of New Providence, are $300 per person and include cocktails, dinner, dancing, raffles and auction. Preceding the Gala (6:30pm-11:00pm), there will be a Mass at the chapel of the monastery, 543 Springfield Avenue in Summit (5:30pm).

Since 1900, the Paul Ippolito Memorial has been serving the funeral needs of families in their local communities, currently in Berkeley Heights, Summit, Caldwell and surrounding areas. As they are witnessing an increase in young women attracted to their life committed to prayer and contemplation, there is now a tremendous need for more space to foster

Rotary Club Scholarship Award Winners

The Summit / New Providence (r) and Berkeley Heights Rotary Club continued their tradition of being the largest scholarship program in the three communities – over $25,000!

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Visits Visual Arts Center

A

s part of her recent official visit to New Jersey in celebration of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts 50th anniversary, Chairman Jane Chu of the National Endowment for the Arts, accompanied by Congressman Leonard Lance, Chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, and Nicholas Paleologos, Executive Director of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, along with other dignitaries paid a visit to the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit. One of New Jersey’s largest organizations dedicated to viewing, making, and learning about contemporary art, the Art Center was one of only 3 arts organizations that Chairman Chu toured on her visit.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is a 2017 recipient of an NEA Art Works grant award for the exhibition, Park Wonder, featuring the work of artist Matthew Jensen opening in April 2017. The Art Center also received designation as a Major Impact organization at the Council’s Annual Meeting.

The visit included a tour of the Art Center’s exhibitions and a meeting with some of the children participating in Summer Art Camp. Chairman Chu observed that during her visits to different arts organizations across the county, each has its own story to tell which uniquely reflects their community. The 80+ year history of the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey demonstrates the dedication to and appreciation for the arts in the local communities of Summit, Millburn/ Short Hills, Chatham, Westfield, Berkeley Heights, and beyond. Art Center Executive Director, Melanie Cohn said, “We loved visiting with the NEA Chairman Jane Chu, and hearing her insights on how arts experiences are trending towards “mash-ups” – where different forms of artistic expression co-mingle.

echnology these days allows larger and larger tiles to be manufactured. 24”x24” and larger are common and they are becoming increasingly more authentic to the natural stones and wood they are trying to replicate.

These pictures show a 12” x36” rectangle that’s designed to look like carrara/statuary marble.

It is installed into a standard 5” tub enclosure that can be found in many houses. Whether it’s a new bathroom or a remodel, I think you can see that, visually, the size and pattern works very well.

Oftentimes it’s not uncommon for a customer to immediately react in a negative way against a larger tile saying...”that’s way too big”.

We also find that contractors will tell the customer the tile is too big.
