he holidays in Summit would not be complete without the annual Holiday House Tour to benefit Reeves-Reed Arboretum. The Holiday House Tour has grown to become the premier holiday event in the area, bringing the community together by offering a fun and entertaining way to spend a day viewing beautiful homes in Summit and Short Hills, gaily decorated for the season. In addition to the homes, the tour includes the mansion at Greenwood Gardens and Wisner House on the Arboretum grounds. This year, the tour is set for Thursday, December 4, from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm.

The Arboretum’s Wisner House will host the annual Holiday Boutique, where tour participants can shop for holiday decorations and gifts by area artists and craftsmen. You will be sure to find

a unique gift to please everyone on your list. The Holiday Boutique will also feature one-of-a-kind tabletop arrangements and wreaths created by the Arboretum’s horticulturists and talented volunteers. The Holiday Boutique will be open between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. A percentage of sales will be donated to the Arboretum.

In addition to the house tour, a buffet luncheon will be served at the newly-renovated Beacon Hill Club, 250 Hobart Avenue, directly across from the Arboretum. Space is limited and advance tour + luncheon package reservations are required. Lunch will be served from 11:30 until 1:00.

Advance purchase tickets are $35 for RRA members and $40 for non-members. Tickets will be $50 on the day of the tour. Combination tour and luncheon tickets are $70 per person. All proceeds will benefit the historic preservation of Reeves-Reed Arboretum and support its horticultural and environmental education programs.

The Holiday House Tour event has been expanded to include two new offerings both being held on Saturday December 6. “Cookies and Cocoa with Santa,” which runs from 10am to 2pm, is a fun morning for young families where your child can have a snack and a picture taken with Santa while telling him if they’ve been naughty or nice ($5 per child). The kids can do their gift shopping at The Holiday Boutique which will remain open for this event. At 7pm that evening, the Arboretum will host a Holiday Concert featuring the award-winning Asylum Quartet with a special arrangement of The Nutcracker for four saxophones. The concert is free to Arboretum members and $25 per person to non-members.

iPads at LCJSMS In the last few weeks, a new crop of sixth graders at Summit Middle School received their personal iPads thanks to the Summit School District and the Summit Educational Foundation. More than 330 iPads were given to students in seventh grade and over 320 to students in sixth grade. A mobile device management system helps the District manage the iPads. During the school year, iPad use of the internet is filtered to prevent access to questionable sites. When the iPads were collected at the

end of last year, any that were damaged were repaired over the summer. In addition, all of the cases from last year were replaced with new, more protective cases.

To determine the effectiveness of the iPad pilot conducted last school year, the District conducted a pre-pilot survey and a post-pilot survey of students.

In particular, the questions focused on the iPad’s impact on access to technology, online collaboration, communication, research, problem-solving, and attitude about using technology. The surveys demonstrated dramatic increases in all of these areas; therefore, the determination was made to continue the deployment of iPads to the incoming LCJSMS students.

Sixth grade teachers are now fully familiar with the iPad technology and how to integrate it with the sixth grade curriculum. “The iPads have helped many students stay more organized and connected to the classroom and its contents. They have also helped students keep track of their work.” says Warren Wannamaker, grade six social studies teacher. Most if not all teachers have created

The current seventh grade class received their personal iPads last January. When they returned to school in September, they were provided the same iPad they had from the prior year. The seventh grade teachers have now integrated the iPad into their curriculum.

The Ethics Institute at Kent Place and Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School Partner Together to Kick-Off NJ Respect Week In early October, the Ethics Institute at Kent Place School (EIKPS) presented a series of assemblies entitled “E” is for Ethics at Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School in honor of NJ Respect Week.

The goal of the assemblies was to promote the value of respect through the use of video prompts, discussion groups, engaging stories, role-plays and reenacted case studies. In a developmentally sensitive fashion, students were introduced to the concept of values and to the EIKPS ethical decision-making model. The highlight of the program was an interactive role-play of an ethical dilemma presented by KPS Middle School Peer Mediators. Presenters at the event from Kent Place School included Director of the Ethics Institute Dr. Karen Rezach, Program Coordinator of the Ethics Institute Dr. Eva Laza, Director of the Primary School Dr. Adunni Anderson, Kent Place Primary School teachers Amy Heuer and Edee Zabriskie, and Kent Place Middle School Peer Mediators.

The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School and LincolnHubbard Elementary School share a common mission of raising awareness and promoting discussion surrounding values and ethical decision-making. The series of assemblies gave Lincoln-Hubbard students the tools and framework needed to feel empowered to develop their own sense of values with which they can make competent and thoughtful ethical decisions.

Confidence in making ethical decisions helps increase independence, competence as global citizens and

courage for leadership.

This event served as an opportunity to exercise a rich partnership between the private and public schools within the wider Summit community.

The Summit High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class on October 9, 2014 before a sell-out crowd at the Grand Summit Hotel. The Hall of Fame inductees included four individuals whose efforts contributed to the success of the Summit High Athletic Program former principal and coach Donald Geddis, coach and mentor Gil Owren, coach and athletic director Howie Anderson and former coach Joann

Also inducted were two of the most outstanding teams in Summit High athletic history, the 1964 Men’s Football Team and the 1986 Women’s Lacrosse Team, and ten outstanding Summit High athletes: Michael Papio ’61, Johnny Mallory ’64, Tommy Odell ’71, Willie Wilson ’74, Chuck Wiebe ’75, Tim Odell ’77, Theresa Gschwind McCullough ’82, Enzo Catullo ’85, Tracey Burke ’85 and Lindsay Burns ’95.

Proceeds from the event, including contributions from area sponsors such as Investors Bank, raised over $20,000 to fund the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame Scholarship Program to provide supplemental college tuition assistance to Summit High Student Athletes.

Santa Claus Shop Needs Donations!

The Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families, providing its 47th consecutive year of complimentary holiday shopping.

The shop serves more than 400 low-income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights who are referred by local social services agents.

The Santa Claus Shop guests personally select a household item, new clothing for each member of their immediate family, a hat and mittens, a book, and a new toy for each child.

Local volunteers are responsible for the shop set up, personal shopping services for each guest, gift wrapping and clean up.

This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit. The Santa Claus Shop will be hosting a holiday gathering for senior citizens on Tuesday, December 2nd. Families

will be offered shopping hours by invitation only on Wednesday, December 3rd.

Summit Residents Encouraged to Volunteer on City Government Boards and Commissions Summit’s strength as a community stems from the many volunteers who contribute their time and talents to serve on municipal boards and committees. By volunteering to serve on a board or committee, residents have the opportunity to bring fresh, innovative and sound ideas to enhance government services, public education, safety issues and our everchanging environment.

Each November, the Mayor and Common Council begin the annual process to appoint new members, who may begin service on January 1, and they continue to fill vacancies throughout the year. Terms vary from one to five years of service with an opportunity for re-appointment. The City will keep applications active for two years.

Downtown Summit Wins a 2014 Great Place in NJ Designation!

The New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association recently recognized several NJ downtowns and places as Great Places in New Jersey…and Summit Downtown was one of them!

Now in its third year, Great Places in New Jersey recognizes unique and exemplary downtowns, streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces, four essential components of exceptional communities.

According to the APA-NJ, Summit’s Special Improvement District has effectively organized businesses and property owners through Summit Downtown Management, Inc. and positioned the downtown as an attractive retail and dining destination. The centerpieces in the lives of their communities, New Jersey’s Great Downtowns prosper in spite of strong regional and e-commerce competition.

“Summit is truly a great place and we thank APA-NJ for this designation,” said Mayor Ellen Dickson. “Our vibrant, historic, walkable downtown has many excellent restaurants, retail shops and services, as well as direct access to mass transit. If you’ve not visited Summit, it’s definitely worth a look.”

The seven judges chose four downtowns and three public spaces as this year’s winners. Congratulations to downtown Summit!

Team SAGE Walks to End Alzheimer’s Led by Ray Eriksen of New Providence, Ed Capano of Westfield and Deanna Butters from SAGE Eldercare in Summit, the SAGE Team raised more than $4,500 at the 2014 “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” held recently in Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

It’s that time of year again! Consider that business, organization, or friend whom you know should be honored but you always forget to nominate. Now is time to send in your recommendations for the Suburban Chamber of Commerce 2015 Awards.

There are six categories, and you can help the Chamber of Commerce leadership find the right people to recognize next March 25 at the Suburban Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.

They are: v Business of the Year Award – Seeks to recognize a business or business person who has operated a respected business in our communities for at least 5 years. Considerations should be given for outstanding practices, products and/or services and involvement in our communities by way of contributions to local programs, events and other services. Past winners have included The Summit Medical Group, Investors Bank, and the Alternative Press.com v Beautification Award – Recognizes a person, business, property owner or organization which has made significant improvements to a site that enhances the appearance and general look of the property and the community, as well as enhancing cultural experiences. v Public Service Award – Honors an outstanding, well-rounded citizen who lives or works in our communities and has demonstrated exemplary service by way of volunteerism and community involvement. v Silver Service Award – Recognizes a private citizen or public servant who has served at least 25 years in multiple volunteer organizations and/or on community boards or committees, someone who has demonstrated a long-time dedication to the community. v Public Service Organization – Honors an organization which has consistently performed services within our communities and has achieved or carried out one or more outstanding events or projects during the previous year. v President’s Award – Presented as a special honor by the CEO of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce to a person, business or organization that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in providing services to its surrounding communities.

CHAMBER NEWS Lori Cicali Receives Agency Hands in the Community Award

Suburban Chamber of Commerce Foundation Chairperson Kassandra Romas congratulates Allstate New Jersey Insurance Company agency owner Lori Cicali who recently received the Agency Hands in the Community Award for her commitment to helping others. With this award came two $1,000 grants from The Allstate Foundation for Summit Lions Foundation and Suburban Chambers Foundation in Summit, where Cicali volunteers.

Berkeley Heights Gets Cleaned Up! Residents and organizations gathered on a late September Saturday morning to clean up public areas in Berkeley Heights for the Berkeley Heights Clean Communities Clean-Up Day, sponsored by the Suburban Chamber of Commerce.

In orange shirts, volunteers met outside the municipal building to be assigned their territory to pick-up. “We have a bigger crowd this year, over 290 volunteers,” said Jim DiMaio of Derco Office Supplies who chaired the event for the Chamber of Commerce. “We are cleaning everything we can -- including parts of the Watchung Reservation and Runnells Hospital.”

Various groups went to sites including public areas on and around Springfield Ave., Town Hall, the Library, Snyder Avenue, Thomas P. Hughes, Mountain Park and Woodruff Elementary Schools, Columbia Middle School and park, Governor Livingston High School, Seeley’s Pond, Runnells Hospital and along the Passaic River.

The Agency Hands in the Community Award celebrates the spirit of service. “Commitment to our communities is a natural extension of what we do every day – protecting people and making their lives more secure,” said Rich Crist, President of Allstate New Jersey Insurance Company. “With support from The Allstate Foundation, Lori, the Summit Lions Foundation and Suburban Chambers Foundation are making their communities stronger.”
