THE SEARCH IS ON! The Suburban Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the 2019 Awards program!

There are seven categories, and you, as our readers can help the Chamber of Commerce leadership find the right people to recognize at our Spring 2019 Suburban Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner.

Here are the award categories and the criteria that the awards committee uses to choose …. v Business/Business Person of the Year – This award seeks to recognize a business or business person who has operated a respected business in our community for

at least five (5) years. The business should be recognized for outstanding practices, products and/or services. Involvement in the community by way of contributions to local programs, events and other service to the towns and organizations beyond business practices will be consider a plus. v Citizen of the Year – This award recognizes an outstanding, well-rounded citizen who lives or works in our community and has demonstrated exemplary service by way of volunteerism and community involvement. v Organization of the Year – This award is to recognize an organization which has consistently performed services within the community for at least five (5) years, and has achieved or carried out one or more outstanding events or projects during the previous year. v Public Safety Award – This award recognizes public safety officials, including Police, Fire and First Aid, who have a minimum of five (5) years of service to the township and have been involved in and contributed to an act (or acts) of exemplary service while providing for the safety of the community and its citizens. v Public Service Award – This award seeks to recognize any public employee of the community and the Board of Education with at least five (5) years of service who has made significant contributions to the community or school system above and beyond the activities and responsibilities of their present job. v Silver Service Award – This award is to recognize a private citizen or public servant who has served at least 25 years in our communities in multiple volunteer organizations and/or on township boards or committees. This person has demonstrated a long time dedication and devotion to the community. v Good Neighbor Award – This award is to recognize a business, property owner or organization which through property improvements, or the implementation of a plan, has enhanced the beauty of community. This can be for a property’s aesthetic enhancement or for the thoughtful conservation of the community’s natural resources, resulting in a positive contribution to the over all life in our community.

STUDENT NEWS GOING ON LINE!

T

he Highlander, the student newspaper of Governor Livingston High School, is making the transition to becoming an online publication thanks to an innovative partnership with TAP Into Berkeley Heights.

Students and community members alike can now go to the TAP Into Berkeley Heights website (www.tapinto.net/towns/berkeleyheights), choose the “Sections” drop-down menu, and click on “The Highlander” in order to get all of the latest news from GLHS. Ms. Bobbie Peer, Editor of TAP Into Berkeley Heights, and Ms. Staci Toporek, Faculty Advisor to The Highlander, have spearheaded the student newspaper’s move to a digital format.

“With The Highlander going online, student journalists at GL will have the opportunity to report news in a much more timely manner,”

explained Ms. Toporek, who is a Teacher of English and Journalism at Governor Livingston. “Instead of waiting for a quarterly newspaper to publish, the community will be able to access the news when it is still news. We can continually post articles on a daily or weekly basis that will reach a wider audience.

And, under the guidance of the TAP Into Berkeley Heights staff, the staff members of the The Highlander will learn more about the responsibility of being journalists and being accountable to report clear, concise, and relevant news to the GL community and community-at-large.

“Bobbie Peer has been integral in getting this started,” Ms. Toporek continued. “She’s been trying to find ways to assist and encourage

local budding journalists through her news site.

So we both thought that this would be a great way to increase our presence and visibility as a source for Governor Livingston news. The Editor-In-Chief of The Highlander, Dana Skerker, is now looking for ways to create new columns and features and cover more newsworthy topics that will be of interest to both high school students and the community as a whole.”

STATE OF NJ HONORS KENT PLACE ETHICS BOWL TEAM

N

ew Jersey State Senator Thomas Kean recognized the Kent Place Ethics Bowl Team with a Joint Legislative Resolution in recognition of their 2018 National Ethics Bowl Championship.

The resolution stated, “the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey are pleased to honor and congratulate the Kent Place Ethics Bowl Team for its remarkable accomplishments as the 2018 National Ethics Bowl Champion…and commends the team’s members and coach for their exceptional diligence and competitive spirit as evidenced by their accomplishments.”

“It was such an honor to have Senator Kean come to Kent Place to present the team with the Joint Resolution from the NJ State Legislature,” said Dr. Karen Rezach, Director of the Ethics Institute

TICKETS ON SALE FOR SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL FALL PLAY PETER & THE STARCATCHER

T

ickets are on sale for the Summit High School Theatre Department’s fall play Peter and the Starcatcher. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 15 to 17 at 7:30PM in the Summit High School auditorium.

“Peter and the Starcatcher is a magical, swashbuckling adventure that upends the centuryold story of how a miserable orphan comes to be Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up,” explains Summit High School Drama Director Anne Poyner.

“Our troupe of hysterical storytellers transforms into marauding pirates and jungle tyrants, unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes who playfully explore the depths of greed and despair, and the bonds of friendship. Please join us with your friends and family for this wonderfully engaging production.”

Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands.

When the ship is taken over by pirates led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own, the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.

Ticket prices are $11 for students and seniors, and $13 for adults.

The story of Peter and the Starcatcher focuses on a young orphan and his mates who are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a

BEFORE THE FLOOD

A Documentary by Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens

R

eeves-Reed Arboretum will be holding a screening of the documentary, BEFORE THE FLOOD, created by Academy Award winners and environmental activists Leonardo DiCaprio and Fisher Stevens, the final event in Arboretum’s series on climate change and sustainability called Local Action/ Global Impact BEFORE THE FLOOD presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet. The film follows DiCaprio as he travels to five continents and the Artic speaking to scientists, world leaders, activists and local residents, to gain a deeper understanding of this complex issue, and to investigate concrete solutions to the most pressing environmental challenge of our time. Joining the Arboretum in presenting this screening are Local Action/Global Impact partners Ciel Power and Green Summit.

The screening will begin at 2 pm on Saturday, November 3, followed by a brief discussion. Thanks to support from our partners, this event is free to the public, but reservations are required due to limited seating.

Renaissance Church Helps Provides Clean Water to Thousands in Africa

R

enaissance Church Team World Vision members participated in the NYCRUNS Brooklyn Half Marathon to raise money to provide clean water to more than 1,220 people in Africa.

The church team surpassed its goal and raised more than $61,000 for World Vision Inc. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization and the largest non-governmental provider of clean water in the world, providing clean water to one new person every 10 seconds. They work to help communities lift themselves out of poverty by addressing issues around clean water, hunger, health, education, economic empowerment, and child protection. A $50 donation provides the infrastructure to bring lasting water to one person, and donations are still being accepted.

“The Team World Vision initiative is powerful in three different ways. It meets the deep needs of the poorest among us in the world, impacts the community here in New Jersey, and impacts ourselves,” said Team Captain Kristen Hubler, the Director of Children’s Ministries at Renaissance Church. “We run so children don’t have to walk six kilometers for uncontaminated water through areas of human trafficking. We want people’s lives to be transformed.”

Local Football Fans Rooting For The Chargers!

M

any local football fans have started to root for the Los Angeles Chargers when the Chargers recently added a new kicker, former Summit High School Football standout Michael Badgley, to their 53 man roster.

Badgley most recently spent the past four years serving as the kicker for the Miami Hurricanes from 2014-2017. He locked down the job as a true freshman, and over his career made 77 of 97 attempts (79.4 percent) with a long of 57 yards landing him as the Canes all-time field goal leader and record holder for most points scored in Miami history at 403.

Project Lifesaver Can Help with Dementia Disorders

T

he Union County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with Project Lifesaver International offers a valuable tool for local law enforcement in locating lost or wandering individuals who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related disorders.

T he Project Lifesaver unit is a tracking unit placed on the wrist of a participant that will emit a wave radio frequency 24/7. Should an emergency arise an on call Sheriff’s Officer will respond to the last known location of the individual. With specialized equipment, the officer can start tracking the “signal” that is emitted from the unit.

Specially trained sheriff’s officers provide the participant and their

family with an understanding of how the equipment works as well as safeguarding information and initiating response in an emergency.

Over 5 million people in the U.S. suffer from Alzheimer’s disease with the number expecting to triple by 2050. Well over 50% of these people will wander or become lost and possibly put themselves at serious risk of injury or even death. These situations are critical emergencies since these individuals usually will not call out for help and will not respond to those who may be searching for their safe return. Knowing what to do and who to call can be vital to a quick and safe recovery.

Summit’s Santa Claus Shop Prepares To Help

F

or the 52nd consecutive year the Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families, providing complimentary holiday shopping to more than 400 low-income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights and other local communities.

The Santa Claus Shop guests personally select a household item, new clothing for each member of their immediate family, a hat and mittens, a book, and a new toy for each child. Local volunteers are responsible for the shop setup, personal shopping services for each guest, gift-wrapping, and clean up.

This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summit. Families are referred to the Santa Claus Shop by local social services agents and will be offered shopping hours on Wednesday, November 28th.

In addition, the Santa Claus Shop will be hosting a holiday gathering for senior citizens Tuesday, November 27th.

The Santa Claus Shop is chaired by Summit residents, Liz Febo, Kourtney Matter, Franny McBride and Shelley Sherman and co-chaired

by Michelle Frei, Kim McGovern, Megan Rende and Christine Semcer.

The Santa Claus Shop exists solely on donations and volunteers.

To keep the holiday spirit alive for local residents in need, the Santa Claus Shop chairwomen ask members of the community to consider giving. SAGE Celebrates Community Honorees at ‘Age Out Loud’ Event

S

AGE Eldercare celebrated three exceptional honorees recently at Canoe Brook Country Club. Honorees included: Summit Area Public Foundation, Celgene and SAGE volunteer, Al Kessler of Basking Ridge. Mort O’Shea of Mendham, former CEO of Hilltop Community Bank, was the evening’s emcee and Susan Haig of Summit was guest speaker.

Haig delivered a moving speech in which she thanked the staff at SAGE for the 20 years of care they provided her late mother through Home Care live-in support and the Spend-A-Day program. “SAGE is indispensable to this community,” she said.

Jack Cooper, President of Summit Area Public Foundation, accepted the Community Partner Award on behalf of the Foundation and noted that SAPF has awarded $331,500 in grants to SAGE over the last ten years. “We know a gem when we see one,” he said.

Joel Beetsch, Vice President of Patient Advocacy at Celgene accepted the Corporate Partner Award on behalf of the global biopharmaceutical company and shared that their partnership with SAGE has spanned 12 years. “It is an honor and quite humbling to be here tonight,” he said.

The event, Age Out Loud, raised awareness about SAGE’s role as an important community resource and the need for services and programs to help vulnerable older adults in the area remain independent and safe at home as they age.

Summit High Schools’ Annual Pledge Day Campaign Summit High School music students will canvas the City of Summit on Sunday, Nov. 4, between noon and 4 p.m., as participants in the Summit Music Parents Association’s (SMPA) Annual Pledge Day. In this fundraising tradition, band, orchestra and chorus students will ask the community for financial support that is vital to the music programs across all of Summit’s public schools. Donations are used to fund scholarships, replace instruments and equipment, recruit musicians for master classes, and subsidize music trips to festivals and competitions. History of the Houses of Worship of Green Village Please join the Chatham Township Historical Society for an informative program given by Pat Wells on the Houses of Worship of Chatham Township and Green Village. These two small towns produced 8 churches and 11 congregations. Many of the churches and congregations started out in homes, schools and shared sanctuaries. Speaker Lisa Roper is the Gravel Garden and Ruin horticulturist at Chanticleer, a contemporary garden within an historic setting in Wayne, PA. She has worked and photographed Chanticleer for the past 26 years. For the last 5 years Lisa has been developing the Gravel Garden, a south-facing, gently sloping garden planted with a mix of fine-textured grasses, silver-leafed Mediterranean plants, hardy succulents, and California and South African annuals. During her presentation, she will share gardening techniques, favorite plant combinations, design intent, and how she uses photography to inform the evolution of the garden. Repatriating Military Service Dogs The capability they (Military Working Dogs) bring to the fight cannot be replicated by man or machine. By all measures of performance their yield outperforms any asset we have in our inventory. Our Army (and military) would be remiss if we failed to invest more in this incredibly valuable resource.” - General David Petraeus. Dogs have been in combat with US soldiers during every major conflict, but were not officially recognized until WWII. There are about 2500 dogs in active service today. Until November 2000, military dogs were euthanized or abandoned after retirement. Ron Aiello of the US War Dog Association will discuss the repatriation of these dogs at the Summit Old Guard Meeting. Fighting Cancer with immunotherapy

Cancer is a word that has become all too common in our daily parlance and we’re burdened with knowing one too many people afflicted with the disease. The scientific community has been soldiering on with trying to find cures, early diagnostic tools and individualized treatments for patients.

At this time of a “perfect storm” combining our understanding of tumor biology, human genetics and the available computing power, are we at the brink of a big breakthrough? Cancer is not new to humanity, but what is new will be presented taking into account the history of cancer and how we have arrived at where we are today. Shockenaw Mountain Boys at the Minstrel The Shockenaw Mountain Boys are an acoustic subset of the great New Jersey jam band, Railroad Earth. They feature R.E. staples Tim Carbone on fiddle, Andy Goessling on guitar and banjo, John Skehan on mandolin, and Johnny Grubb (of Emmitt & Nershi) on bass. They do great high-energy versions of Irish tunes, traditional folk standards, bluegrass, and a few originals. Malaria Today Malaria has had a significant negative impact on human survival for over 10,000 years and persists into the 21st Century. Malaria currently afflicts over 200 million individuals every year and more than 500,000 of these patients (mostly children) die every year! Presently the mainstay treatment for malaria is artemisinin (and its derivatives) from the Chinese plant Artemisia annua. Artemisinin is always administered in combination with additional antimalarial drugs to retard the growth of drug resistance.

Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) was founded in 1999 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the discovery, development and delivery of new, effective and affordable antimalarial drugs. Matt Wyvratt of MJW Pharma Consulting will discuss the critical need to discover new anti-malarias to combat drug resistance to existing medications. The discussion will be held at the Summit Old Guard meeting. Guests are welcome.

Reeds, Rhythm, and All That Brass is an 18-piece band playing the classic American Songbook repertoire of the Big Band era and beyond. Comprised of professional and semi-professional players, they perform the music made famous by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, and the like. Tonight’s opening act is comprised of two members of our headline act. An eclectic mix of music from bluegrass to jazz to standards comes from the agile musical minds of Folk Project members Frank Sole and Hank Nerenberg. Frank is a skilled guitarist both in lead flat picking styles and in Django-inspired jazz. Hank has one of the widest ranging musical minds in the Project, and is a genius at innovative and appropriate arrangement. Wheelchair accessible; free parking.

Windborne at the Minstrel Conjuring up echos of the Canadian group “Finest Kind”, Windborne is a harmony-driven quartet of 20-somethings who revel in the vocal traditions of the British Isles and early American folk song. To this they add vocal harmony traditions from around the world from the Balkans to South Africa.

They sing either a capella, or with spare accompaniment on banjo, fiddle, and percussion. Opener Maia McCormick came to folk music by way of the folk dance scene, through the unaccompanied song tradition. Her wide repertoire, gleaned from years of pub sings and song swaps, encompasses both the classic and contemporary; she performs touching ballads, rousing shanties, and some songs more ridiculous than sublime. With her warm, resonant voice, she offers her listeners lots of choruses to sing with. Free parking; wheelchair accessible.

Combating Slavery and education

Two programs are established that provide women in under-developed nations with educational and or economic opportunities to create employment channels for women in those nations. The Nomi Network fosters the development of leadership and life skills for survivors and women at risk of human trafficking and enables access to a more transparent labor force. Kiwimbi International focuses on creating opportunity through education by establishing locally run learning centers in underserved communities worldwide. Joe Salsberry will describe these programs at the Summit Old Guard. Guests are welcome.
