fter nearly eight years at the Chamber running The Collection Magazine and over twenty years selling real estate in Summit, Annemarie Cahill has decided to solely focus on her real estate career. This is her last edition of The Collection as our Advertising Director. During her tenure we have grown and brought you many new concepts and features, as well as introducing our readers to many new merchants and businesses. Annemarie is a Sales Associate at Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty in the Summit office. Overlook in the Top 100! verlook Medical Center was the only hospital in the Garden State to be named to the 2018 list of ‘100 Great Community Hospitals’ recently released by the Becker’s Healthcare Hospital Review.

“As Overlook has steadily enhanced its clinical expertise and is now recognized in the region for its high-quality care, we’ve remained committed to our role as the caregiver for our communities, working every day both inside and outside the hospital to make them healthier,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center.

The 504-bed hospital is a leading provider of unique specialty services in the area, including neuroscience, digestive diseases such as interventional gastroenterology, and specialized centers such as the Institute for Rheumatology and Autoimmune Diseases and Pediatric Eating Disorders Center. The main campus is home to the Atlantic Neuroscience Institute, recognized as the regional leader in neuroscience care and the regional hub for the New Jersey stroke network.

Throughout the last decade, Overlook has launched several initiatives to reach beyond the Summit campus to work directly within its communities.

Park Line Foundation is Awarded 200K Matching Grant from Reeves Foundation

S

ummit Park Line Foundation has received a 200K matching grant from the Reeves Foundation to support its Park Line project, a 1.2 mile linear pedestrian park being created on the abandoned Rahway Valley Railroad line.

With grants from the Summit Area Public Foundation, Overlook Foundation, Overlook Medical Center and through a number of generous donations from Summit residents, the Park Line Foundation exceeded the $200,000 goal raising more than $225,000 of the $3.2 million dollars needed to complete the project within a 12-month period, and qualifying for the matching grant.

In early 2016, the City of Summit acquired from the State of New Jersey the rights to build the park accessible for pedestrian and bicyclists. Once

completed, Park Line will extend from the edge of the downtown Summit at Overlook Medical Center, along a 1.2 mile path through eastern Summit, ending at Briant Park on the Springfield border.

The Summit Park Line Foundation and concept was created by Dr. Robert Rubino, former Summit councilman who realized the potential for a park similar to the Highline Park in Manhattan could be initiated in Summit, NJ along the abandoned rail line. “There has been an outstanding expression of support for the Park Line concept from the Summit community,” explains Rubino.

“As the momentum for funding of the project continues to build, the Park Line Foundation is extremely thankful for the circle of friends that are helping to carry this important project forward.”

Register Now For Kent Place School’s Girls Day 5k On October 14

R

egistration is now open for Kent Place School’s second annual Girls Day 5K: run, walk, and learn event to be held on Saturday, October 13. The event is open to the general public.

Girls Day 5K is a timed 5K run hosted by Kent Place School and will be followed by a studentled educational festival with activities centered

around International Day of the Girl (IDG). IDG is an annual day highlighting issues in girls’ education across the globe. Proceeds will benefit BlinkNow, an organization that provides support for girls and women in Nepal.

The event takes places on the Kent Place campus and the surrounding streets of Summit for the racecourse. Early bird registration for $30 is now open through September 1. After September 1,

registration will be $35, and $40 on the day of the race.

Junior League of Summit Officers Announced

he Junior League of Summit is proud to announce its Board of Directors for the 2018-19 year. The Board will be led by President Erika Melchiorre of Summit, who succeeds Elizabeth Dutkewych.

Police Participated in Statewide Crackdown on Impaired Driving

L

ocal police departments are participating in Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, a statewide crackdown on impaired driving. The goal of the New Jersey state program is to encourage law enforcement agencies to raise public awareness about the dangers of alcoholimpaired driving through a combination of highly visible enforcement backed up by targeted media activities.

Research shows that highvisibility enforcement can reduce alcohol-related crash fatalities by as much as 20 percent. Police have been conducting roving patrols to stop drivers who appear to be operating vehicles while impaired.

Grace Receives Grant For Weekly Community Refrigerator

T

he Junior League of Summit is proud to announce that it received a $20,000 grant from the George W. Bauer Family Foundation to support its signature community outreach project, GRACE’s Refrigerator. These funds will be used to purchase fresh, healthy foods for local families that would not otherwise be able to purchase for themselves.

GRACE, which stands for Giving and Receiving Assistance for Our Community’s Essentials was founded in 2016 by member and Summit local, Amanda Parrish Block. The program was launched following research into the issue of food insecurity and the revelation that one in six Summit public school students is lacking access to fresh, nutritious foods. We believe that creating better

communities starts with food and everyone should have the opportunity to shop for and enjoy healthy foods needed to fuel their minds and bodies. The GRACE program is making an enormous impact in our community and the momentum is strong. We rely on the efforts of volunteers and donations to continue providing these essentials.

GRACE’s Refrigerator is open weekly and offers nutrientdense produce, dairy, and prepared food which is sourced from the Summit Farmers Market, local businesses, and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. On average, 72 families depend on the community refrigerator each week.

Since its inception, it has served 117,190 pounds of fresh produce, dairy, eggs, and bagels to 18,125 individuals (including 9,529 children and 822 senior citizens).

Summit Approves Hometown Heroes Program to Honor Local Veterans

T

he City of Summit Common Council approved a resolution this summer to continue the Summit Hometown Heroes program for a second year.

Through the successful program, the names, images and dates of service of 100 active military and veterans appeared on banners displayed along city streets from Memorial Day through July 4.

In 2018, the program was limited to the first 100 applicants that met eligibility requirements. For 2019, the program will be expanded to include an additional 50 participants. The program is funded through private donations with no fee to participate. Information on application requirements and how to apply is available at cityofsummit.org/hometownheroes.

SAGE is First Stop in Rotary Club’s New Program “Rotary for Community”

A

team of fifteen volunteers from the Rotary Club of Summit – New Providence visited SAGE Eldercare this summer as part of the Rotary’s new monthly program “Rotary for Community.”

Volunteers spent time visiting with clients of the Spend-ADay Adult Health Care program and helped deliver Meals on Wheels. The Rotary, whose motto “Service Above Self,” has been involved with community projects in Summit and New Providence since 1922. Along with community service, the Rotary has been awarding financial scholarships to college bound seniors for 92 years. Six were awarded this year.

who has served as Principal of the Summit Primary Centers for the past four years, be reassigned to serve as Principal of Franklin Elementary School. As the Principal of the Wilson and Jefferson Primary Centers she has proven to be an extremely talented academic leader who has strengthened programs for Summit’s youngest students.

Mrs. Tierney brings her knowledge of the district, families, and students, as well as her passion for great teaching, and her expertise in creating optimal learning environments, to her work at Franklin Elementary School.

r. John Ciferni

has been appointed as Assistant Principal of Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School. Mr. Ciferni has worked for the Madison Public Schools as a History Teacher at the junior school for the past 12 years. He designed social studies curriculum and was an active member of various committees including school climate and vision. Mr. Ciferni proudly served as team leader where he effectively lead and mentored colleagues, as well as advocated for students.

He was the advisor for the Peer Leadership program and coordinated multiple service learning opportunities to promote engagement with the local community. During his tenure, Mr. Ciferni was recognized as Teacher of the Year and was awarded multiple grants from the local educational foundation.

has been selected as the Director of Special Education Services for the Summit Public Schools. Ms. Babis began her career in education as a Special Education and Language Arts Teacher at the middle school level. She was awarded Teacher of the Month and Teacher of the Year for her school, as well as Teacher of the Year for the Clark Public School District. In 2014, Ms. Babis became the LDT-C where she was involved in pre-referral interventions, provided training to classroom teachers, and was part of the Child Study Team. Following that, she became a Supervisor of Special Services, and subsequently, the Director of Student Support Services. In these roles she supervised K-12 special education staff, nurses, and school counselors, and was the Affirmative Action Officer and Homeless Liaison for the district.

New rates also took this summer with the rate for parking in 90-minute spots now set at $1.00 per hour. At the payment kiosk, customers will be prompted to enter a vehicle license plate number and to make a payment with exact change or by credit card.

Payments can also be made with Parkmobile, an online app for your phone. The first 15-minutes free parking will still be offered at payment kiosks. One hour free parking in the De Forest “Park and Shop” Lots is also available. Parking Services Agency staff members are assisting people with new parking payment kiosk technology in downtown Summit. inberie’s Restaurant & Bar reopened its doors earlier this year after a two month renovation updating their space in the historic downtown building.

Returning patrons will immediately notice the newly updated dining room, revamped floor plan and the expanded bar area but will quickly feel right at home with the food and service which the Winberie’s and Select Restaurants, Inc. has been providing in Summit since 1985.

A new floor was installed composed of more than three tons of wooden planking. The restaurant’s newly expanded bar will boast 16 rotating taps and a new Happy Hour menu. Local guests wanted to see more craft beer options available, so Manager Jim Owens and his staff included that feedback in the remodel, as well as using state-of-art technology to preserve its extensive wines by the glass offerings to ensure each is always fresh.

As to the menu, Winberie’s continues to showcase freshly prepared, traditional and contemporary versions of American comfort foods, as well as, new, handcrafted recipes. Many long term favorites like Cedar Plank Salmon, Cajun Mac & Cheese and Chicken Pot Pie remain on the menu.

Located in the Summit Opera House, the new look and feel of the restaurant pays homage to the building’s 125-year history. The Summit Opera House was built in 1893, but with today’s upgrades in facilities and culinary delights it’s sure to be an enjoyable evening for everyone from boomers to millennials.
