Jonathan was eight when his parents divorced

He moved with his mother from the only home he’d ever known.

Unsure what the future held, he felt the most important thing was that he and his mother Janet were together.

But when Janet lost her job after 25 years, there was more uncertainty. The family faced homelessness.

Family Promise worked with Janet to find employment. But just as important, they help eight-year-old Jonathan adjust to the family’s new and complicated circumstances.

Jonathan was starting a new school, so Family Promise connected with his teachers to smooth the transition on his first day. They also arranged for a walking buddy to accompany him to and from the school bus stop, easing the family’s nerves that fall.

Jonathan, always a good student, continued to make honor roll.

The family is still involved with Family Promise today, now as volunteers, and Jonathan is excelling in high school and plans to attend college.

Since 1988, Family Promise has served families in need, and we'll continue to be there.

new, conveniently located urgent care facility offers the option of walk-in availability, or patients may make appointments.

Its motto is, “Our medicines treat aches and pains and our physicians treat people.”

AFC Urgent Care at 704 Morris Turnpike in Short Hills, across from Bed Bath and Beyond, offers extended hours and board-certified providers, and “we take pretty much all insurance,” said owner Michael Harvey, who resided in Summit for 15 years and said he still has strong ties to the community, including a child attending the city’s public schools.

“I knew this was a great location,” he said of the former wine shop next to Panera, “and I have been so happy with the response from the local community. We did extensive renovations to the building, and even received an award this year from the Millburn Chamber of Commerce for the Best Renovation and Design of a Building.”

AFC not only provides quality medical care, Mr. Harvey said, it offers X-rays and a lab on-site, and takes patients of all ages. Staff offers not only urgent care and a walk-in clinic, but also available are physicals, flu shots, STD testing, sports and camp physicals, DOT physicals, occupational medicine and drug testing. Preventative and

diagnostic care and treatment of acute injuries are offered, and among the tests that can be performed on-site are blood work, flu, strep and urinalysis.

Mr. Harvey said that it is the goal of AFC to get patients treated and release them within 45 minutes or an hour of their arrival, which he described as much less stressful than an average visit to a hospital emergency room. Many patients as of late are coming to the clinic for its rapid Covid tests, but others are people suffering from colds, back or joint pain, asthma, allergies, cuts, bruises, sprains, insect bites, rashes, skin infections, pink eye and minor eye injuries and infections.

istorian and writer Laura Gellott of Wisconsin will speak at the Summit Free Public Library about her book, “Helen Perry Curtis and the European Trip of a Lifetime,” tracing Ms. Curtis’ life from a Nebraska childhood to Summit and across the European continent in the early decades of the 20th century. The in-person event will be held at the library on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., co-sponsored by the Summit Historical Society.

According to Ms. Gellott, Ms. Curtis participated in the reform movements of her era, including women’s suffrage and the settlement house, specifically Neighborhood House, which served the immigrant labor force of Summit’s silk mills. She was a curator at the Newark Museum, director of the State Museum of New Jersey and a prolific freelance writer for women’s magazines. With her husband, John

Morrison Curtis, she ran an interior design business in Summit, work she continued until nearly the end of her long life.

Ms. Gellott will also tell the story behind Ms. Curtis’ book, “Jean & Company, Unlimited,” in which she fictionalized her European travels with her daughters in the 1930s. Ms. Gellott first read the book as a child, and credits it with inspiring her career as a professor of European history. Six years ago, what she describes as a “fortunate connection” with Ms. Curtis’ granddaughters, Martha and Pat Wells of Chatham Township and Summit native Susie Whitesell Fauteux, resulted in Ms. Gellott becoming an author of her book about Ms. Curtis.

I am thrilled to be welcoming teachers and students back to the classroom and onto playing fields this fall. Every year, I have the privilege of meeting the outstanding group of newly-hired Summit teachers to welcome them to our wonderful community. I pledge to support them in every way possible and let them know that Summit families will, too. With the rapid spread of the more contagious delta variant of the COVID-19 virus, it has never been more important for us to work together to keep our close contacts -- family, neighbors, teachers, classmates and teammates -- safe and healthy.

As part of a multilayered approach to health and safety in our schools and in alignment with recent State of New Jersey and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, COVID-19 vaccinations or weekly testing will be required this year for all staff, and masks will be required in all Summit Board of Education buildings for staff and students.

Of interest to our business and Suburban Chamber community, the township created a Technical Review Committee.

This is a policy I hoped to get off the ground in 2020, but as we all know, a global pandemic diverted our timelines and our best-laid plans. The committee will ensure we are developing smartly while cutting out unnecessary red tape to help businesses obtain local approvals in the most efficient manner.

And if you are feeling sick with a headache, cough or cold, stay home and get tested for COVID-19 even if you are vaccinated. Let us look out for one another in the way that Summit does best.

Residents had a front row seat to the Plainfield Avenue sidewalk project. We are nearing completion just in time for the return to school. Thank you to all involved in the project including Council President Jeanne Kingsley and our Township Engineer Tom Solfaro -- also a local resident.

the end of Phase Two, which included the demolition of the old town hall and paving the area as commuter parking and overflow parking for those utilizing the new recreation, library, senior citizen, police department, finance and other spaces. We are so pleased to have residents come to the building after such a difficult process with the construction. So I am taking a moment to give a loud and hearty shout out to Township Administrator Liza Viana.

Despite personal challenges, she pushed this project over the goal line!

Some of our paving projects fell victim to Covid supply chain challenges, with the inability to obtain materials for the reconstruction of the Fairfax/Windsor Road project and the train station lot.

We are also hopeful to kick off the cooperative paving projects shortly, as well. A bit delayed, but nonetheless all these projects will be worth waiting for and a significant improvement to many neighborhoods.

Back-to-School 2021

rian Zanasnik is a Union native who has exhibited and performed at the Brooklyn Museum and in Prague, Istanbul and China. But his latest commission is bringing him back to his roots, after he was chosen by Summit Public Art to create a site-specific piece for the Village Green that explores the city’s connections to the silk industry.

The project came about because of Mr. Zanasnik’s friendship with a Summit resident. “I met Estelle Fournier many years ago through the art world,” he said. “For the past couple of years we have been talking about a project for Summit, and we bounced around a lot of ideas. First I was thinking about people born here, such as Meryl Streep.”

But that “didn’t feel right,” he recalled. He began doing deeper research into the history of Summit, specifically silk manufacturing and immigrants who came to the city to work in those factories.

He designed columns onto which he transferred images he sourced both online and in person at the archives of the Summit Historical Society, and constructed a digital collage printed on aluminum dibond. The installation took place on a day the mercury reached nearly 100 degrees…and the artist was recovering from a broken wrist.

“I think of the sculptures as monuments,” Mr. Zanasnik said, “but also as monoliths, as if they were futuristic objects that landed in Summit.” The two columns are placed on

opposite sides of a sidewalk near the train station, at the end nearest the post office.

“I really like that the sculptures feel very formal and minimal from a distance,” the artist noted, “but then reveal their content up close.” The images include headlines from local newspapers dating to the early 1900s, photos of looms and other silk-making equipment, and images of Summit silk mill workers and their families. Reproduced are also various views of the Summit Antique Center on Morris Avenue, once a settlement house founded by Central Presbyterian Church for the workers and their families, a place where they could go to play sports, learn to speak English and practice skills like sewing.

“I really wanted to draw attention to the diverse history of Summit,” Mr. Zanasnik said, noting that though he now resides in New York, he was born at Overlook. “I thought it was fascinating –- and important – that so many Syrian and Armenian immigrants from the Ottoman Empire came to Summit, bringing their tradition of silk weaving with them.

When we walk past buildings like the antique center, we recognize they are old buildings, but we don’t know their specific history.”

He said his sculptures “bring this history to the forefront, and tell the story of not just Summit, but of the forgotten people who made this town what it is today.”

According to Summit café founder Courtney Cordaro, repairs made by volunteers will be available for lamps, electronics, bicycles, sewing/textiles, jewelry and wooden items/furniture. In addition, knife sharpening will be offered.

Repair Cafes are a nationwide effort at which the goals are to repair broken items together, provide professional advice, host a community effort and offer inspirational encounters.

Courtney Cordaro is the founder of Summit’s Repair Café, set for Saturday, Sept. 18, at Christ Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

here is a deeply personal story behind the hundreds of sunflowers stretching skyward throughout downtown Summit.

John Irons doesn’t just live in town, he is “Summit through and through,” he said, born at Overlook and member of the SHS Class of 1985.

Years ago, he said, he gave a friend a bouquet of sunflowers for her 21st birthday, and they quickly became “her favorite flower and her passion.”

Diagnosed with breast cancer at 34, she was widowed at 35, became a single mother of two and lost her struggle with cancer at age 41.

“Her passing affected me deeply,” Mr. Irons said, “and I was left to grieve and make sense of things, so I decided to create something beautiful and positive as a memorial to her and a way to honor the children she left behind. Thus the ‘Summit sunflowers’ were born.”

When the effort began, he noted the pleasure they brought to so many residents and visitors, especially children, “so it just grew from there and became as much a gift to the town as a memorial to my friend, Cheryl Barbara Wendt.”

Mr. Irons said Dylan Baker from Summit House saw “me planting one evening. After I told him my story, he was touched and told me about the painting by Kelsey Montague being commissioned (on the wall of BarBacoa) and promised to have her add a sunflower in honor of Cheryl.”

Upon completion of that mural, Mr. Irons said he was “shocked and delighted that the sunflowers became the largest element of the mural.”

Mr. Irons has also been incorporating mixed wildflowers, he said, “wherever I find a bare patch of dirt that is calling out for some love. I understand the little strip next to the exit of the Bank Street lot made quite an internet splash as well this year.”

He described his effort as “a small gift to my hometown” as the world emerged from a long Covid winter, and noted his 300 Alley flowers are a colorful backdrop to the patio at Bull & Bear Brewery and for the city’s weekly farmers’ market.

“I am friendly with the brewery owners,” Mr. Irons said, “and I have ambitions to expand as permitted.” For 2021, he planted from last year’s dead heads and estimated he purchased “4,000 seeds of mixed variety…the attrition rate to birds, etc., is rather high, however, and I guess maybe I have 200 plants out there this year.” He does the maintenance himself, and credited fellow gardener Beth Welsh from Bassett Associates as “the one who really pushed me to start working with SDI and the town.”

Mr. Irons has no plans to retire his trowels and watering can any time soon. He said, “I am always looking for some patches of earth that need some love, and I already have some in mind for next year.”
