908 Helps Football al Liberato, CEO & Founder of 908 Enterprises, is always looking for ways to give back to the community.

Whether it is helping local businesses expand their clientele through social media marketing and advertising, or sponsoring charity events in town, Sal values the many connections he has formed with those around him. As a wide receiver at Summit High School from 2008-2010, Sal helped lead the Hilltoppers to both State and Conference Championships. He now takes his leadership and skills set from the field out into the business world where he helps connect local companies with new clients via social media marketing. Sal also gives back to the Summit Hilltopper Football program by volunteering his time to take pictures of the team, produce promo videos, build a new website, and more. The media and marketing Sal provides for the Summit Hilltoppers rivals Division 1 athletic programs across the country. In his new role at 908 Enterprises, Sal is honored to remain a part of the Summit Football Family. Summit Head Coach Kevin Kostibos says “It is great when we have former players come back to the program, Sal is doing a great job helping our team gain more exposure through modern media.”

Berkeley Heights Rotary Grows

T

he Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights recently inducted its 22nd member: Vibha Mehta.

N

ew Jersey authors will sign books and talk to visitors at the New Providence Book Festival on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The festival, located on the grounds of the historic Salt Box Museum, will include a series of author panels on a range of book-related topics.

Ms. Mehta and her family have lived in Berkeley Heights for over 20 years. She is a pharmacist by education and profession, but recently traded her white lab coat for a real estate license, now working from the Warren office of Coldwell Banker.

Jazz Society Celebrates 45th Year!

T

he New Jersey Jazz Society is the oldest and largest society in the state dedicated to the Preservation, Promotion and Performance of Jazz, America’s original art form. The Society will celebrate its 45th year at 3 pm on Sunday October 22, 2017 at the Dorothy Young Center For The Arts, Drew University, Madison, NJ This event will be “All New Jersey” celebrating the rich jazz history of the Garden State, from big bands to bebop and beyond; honoring the 75- year career of the Garden State’s own beloved jazz guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli.

We wanted to create an event that connects authors with readers in a very personal way,” explained J.R. Bale, one of the organizers of the event. “With over a dozen authors of various genres, it should be a stimulating event for even the most casual book lover.”

Anyone purchasing a book at the festival will also receive a free raffle ticket for a drawing for an overnight stay at the Murray Hill Hotel and Suites and a $50 gift certificate for Moe’s Bistro. Other vital festival sponsors is the Lantern Hill retirement community and Page Bound Success, an organization which supports the marketing efforts of local writers.

Kent Place School’s Girls Day 5k On October 14th

R

egistration is now open for Kent Place School’s, first annual Girls Day 5K: run, walk and learn event to be held on Saturday, October 14. The event is open to the general public.

TGirls Day 5K is a timed 5K run hosted by Kent Place School and will be followed by a studentled educational festival with activities centered around International Day of the Girl (IDG). IDG is an annual day highlighting issues in girls’ education across the globe. Proceeds will benefit BlinkNow, an organization that provides support for girls and women in Nepal.

The event takes places on the Kent Place campus and the surrounding streets of Summit for the racecourse. Registration is $30, and $35 on the day of the race.

Missed This Summer Governor Livingston High School The Governor Livingston High School Class of 2017 recently assembled on a beautiful early summer evening along with faculty members, administrators, Board of Education members, families, and friends to celebrate the school’s 57th Commencement Exercises on Frey Field. Highlighted by a pointed and thoughtful commencement address by Timothy Donohue, the achievements of this year’s graduates were remembered in front of nearly 2,000 guests.

Senior Class President Meryl Schaffer presented the Class Gift, a check

for $2,000 made out the Governor Livingston PTO in support of the “Cool the School” initiative. Kian Monaghan placed the ceremonial Claymore into the rock as bagpipers from the GL Highlander Band led the procession onto the field. The Class of 2017 was one of the most successful and largest graduating classes in recent years.

This summer Summit said “so long” to Rich Caputo, a member of the City’s Department of Community Services for the past 25 years. Richie was one to always go the extra mile, and we’ll always remember him putting up the showmobile in the worst weather to accommodate Santa, and facilitating the Farmer’s Market, and simply always going the extra mile to help. Berkeley Heights Street Fair

T

housands gathered along Springfield Avenue in Berkeley Heights for the Annual Street Fair. This year the event featured the first ever Beer and Wine Garden, which was dedicated to the memory of Victor Guidetti III a local Berkeley Heights family man, friend and business community member.

Lots of local businesses as well as great fair food lined the streets. The fair was also visited

by Cubby, the county anti-liter ambassador whose appearance was sponsored by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholder.

2017 Summit Police Youth Academy Graduates 58 Cadets

T

he Summit Police Department held it’s thirteenth season of its Youth Academy, an increasingly popular program designed to provide area youth with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the role of the police officer. A total of 58 cadets graduated during two separate ceremonies which were attended by family members, Mayor Nora Radest, Police Chief Robert Weck.

Ranging in age from 11 to 14, the cadets experience the same types of drills and physical training that men and women receive in today’s police academies. In addition to receiving overviews of criminal investigations, evidence recovery and patrol tactics, the cadets are provided with hands-on scenario training in which they process crime scenes, conduct high-risk motor vehicle stops and even have an opportunity to experience some of the difficulties of emergency vehicle operation by driving golf carts alongside their instructor.

SAGE Grocery Shopping Volunteers Were Lifesavers

I

t’s no exaggeration when Geraldine says the volunteers at SAGE Eldercare “saved my life.”

She fell getting out of bed and broke her hip the night before she was to receive groceries from the grocery shopping and errand service of SAGE. When volunteer Judy Leane arrived with groceries that morning, she knew something was amiss when Geraldine didn’t greet her at the door of her Berkeley Heights home. She called SAGE Volunteer Coordinator Amy Stuart who went by to check for herself and found the house still locked and dark. She felt in her gut something must

be wrong as it wasn’t like Geraldine to miss her weekly visit and groceries. Stuart called family members and then the police, who broke down the door and found Geraldine, who had been on the floor all night. She faced a pin in her leg in addition to the broken hip, a two-week stay in the hospital, and a month of rehabilitation before she returned home and resumed the SAGE services.

“And here I am, thanks to the people of SAGE who were insistent that I was home,” Geraldine said. “The grocery shopping service saved my life, literally.”

he Summit Police Department is inviting members of the Summit and nearby communities to participate in the Making a Difference 5K run in honor of Detective Matthew Tarentino on Saturday, September 9 at 9AM in downtown Summit.

The event is being organized by the Summit Police Athletic League (PAL) with Overlook Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, as the primary sponsor.

This year marks a transition for the event, formerly known as the Overlook Medical Center 5K. Overlook Medical Center and the Summit PAL have had a successful history of collaboration throughout the history of the 5K, and this year opted to transition

organizing duties to the PAL with continued support

by Overlook.

“Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center is proud to continue to support this beloved community tradition that brings together people from throughout our region to race to make a difference,” said Alan Lieber, president of Overlook Medical Center.

“Collaborating with local organizations is an essential ingredient to our mission of making our communities healthier, and we are excited to support the Summit PAL as it guides this year’s poignant event benefiting the family of Detective Tarentino.”

The event will consist of a 5K run and a one-mile walk/fun run to accommodate participants of varying levels of interest and ability. Each race will feature a scenic course through downtown Summit, award prizes for top finishers and provide post-race food and entertainment.

Registration fees for the 5K run are $30 per person until August 31, and $35 from September 1 to 9. Fees for the one-mile run/walk are $20 until August 31 and $25 from September 1 to 9 and can be completed online. The rain date is Sunday, September 10.

“Detective Matthew Tarentino was a competitive runner who thoroughly enjoyed the sport,” explained Summit Police Officer and run coordinator Kathleen Maggiulli. “Initiating this run in Matt’s name to benefit his family is a fitting tribute that would mean the world to him. The Summit Police Department is proud to participate alongside the PAL and sincerely thanks the community for joining us.”
