RIBBON CUTTING CELEBRATES RE-TURFING OF SNYDER FIELD

T

he Union County Freeholder Board joined Berkeley Heights Mayor Angie Devanney, members of Township Committee, children and other community members in cutting the ribbon on the newly re-turfed multi-use field at Snyder Avenue Park in September. The field, originally installed in 2010, is used for football, soccer and lacrosse. In addition, plans are underway to turf the existing baseball field, with construction to begin in 2020. “We are pleased to have joined with the mayor and township in celebrating the renewal of the multi-use field,” said Freeholder Chairwoman Bette Jane Kowalski. “This park has been an outstanding investment for the county, which transformed what was once a former industrial site, saving it from development and creating a bustling recreation area for all.” Freeholder Sergio Granados acknowledged Mayor Devanney for her role in asking the county to re-turf the field, which was worn after nearly a decade of usage, and added, “Snyder Avenue Park is one of our best county recreational facilities, and it contains many amenities. Thousands use it every year, and we’re pleased to make an improvement that will not only benefit Berkeley Heights, but all county residents who use this facility.” Mayor Devanney said, “I have been proud to partner with the freeholders and move this project forward from the beginning to fruition. As a mom who has served on the PAL Board and has two very active children, I understand the importance of recreational facilities in our community. I would like to thank the freeholders for this project. We look forward to the completion of the baseball field, as well.” Once an industrial site, Union County purchased the 17-acre Snyder Avenue facility in 2004, one of the earliest purchases made by the Union County Open Space Trust Fund, and one of the largest at that time. The purchase saved it from a plan to develop 259 residential units there. Most of the park is owned and operated by Union County. In addition to the multi-purpose and baseball fields, it includes walking pathways and trails, two playgrounds and a spray park.

The investment will preserve the best of the hotel’s history while bringing it into the 21st century in terms of technology and amenities. Each renovated guest room was brought down to the framing and rebuilt from the floor up, with upgraded electrical service and plumbing, cutting-edge bathroom designs and new furniture and bedding. Robert Gelber, president and general manager, said the project “restores the glamour that long has been a hallmark of The Grand Summit Hotel while adding a hip and trendy vibe to our classical setting.” The work is just the beginning of the hotel's renaissance, which will include upgrading service standards to deliver a four-star experience. That effort will extend to The Hat Tavern, which early next year will be transformed into Summit’s newest restaurant concept, with a new name, menu and décor. Longtime customers will be glad to know that the traditions of plentiful free parking, happy hour and Sunday football specials will continue. Mr. Gelber and his business partner, Marshall Weinerman, have owned and operated The Grand Summit Hotel independently of their national chain competitors since 1984. They are only the fifth owners since the original Blackburn House opened at the same address on Springfield Avenue in 1868. The Grand Summit Hotel today caters to the Fortune 100 companies headquartered throughout the surrounding area and hosts major corporate and association events, weddings, anniversaries, bar and bat mitzvahs and class and family reunions. The hotel is a home away from home for business travelers as well as leisure travelers visiting Summit.

T

he second annual Color Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 5, benefited the Berkeley Heights Education Foundation, a non-profit created to enrich academic development in the township school district by raising funds and distributing proceeds directly to the schools in the form of grants. Families gathered on Lower Columbia Field for the festivities, which included a Kiddie Color Dash and a Family Color Run. Many participants donned white T-shirts, the better to show off the powdered colors tossed their way by fellow BHEF supporters. Music, a food truck, ice cream and more added to the festivities, which took place on a day that featured beautiful weather. The Education Foundation was created in 1994 by a group of residents and local business people. Its goal is to raise funds to enhance educational excellence in the township’s public schools by sponsoring programs that support innovation in instruction, strengthen school-community ties, enrich students’ appreciation of the arts and humanities, and augment technology resources throughout the district.
