Holiday Concert to Pay Tribute to Hollywood Composer James Horner

T

he Pipes of Christmas celebrates its 17th season with performances in Summit on December 20th. This classic holiday concert like no other offers a unique blend of drums and pipes along with the harmonious sound of brass, strings, and percussion native to Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

This years performance, honors late film composer James Horner, who composed over a 100 films and received two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards over his brilliant career. His body of work includes score for ‘Braveheart,’ ‘Titanic,’ ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ and ‘Field of Dreams.’ In addition to the Horner tribute, the concert will also feature the world premier of a new work composed by a music student of Edinburgh Napier University as part of the university’s Christmas Composition Contest.

Proceeds from the concert support an extensive international music scholarship program that includes annual gifts to students in the United States, Scotland and Canada. Commenting on the Society’s music scholarship program, stage and screen star Alan Cumming said, “I am delighted that proceeds from the Pipes of Christmas will result in these important gifts which ensure that the future of Scottish culture is safer with these generous scholarships.”

Named one of New York City’s “Top Ten” holiday events, the concert is made possible by a generous gift from Edinburgh Napier University, and the Grand Summit Hotel.

Concert highlights will also be screened with holiday performances scheduled to be televised via cable to 11 NJ towns on December 24th-26th, 2015 and streamed online.

Three Kent Place Seniors Sign Letters of Intent on National Signing Day hree Kent Place School student-athletes have signed Tto play Letters of Intent on National Signing Day (November 11) sports at the next level.

Julia Schmuckler of New Vernon signed her National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at the University of Louisville; Olivia Reiter of Summit signed to join the University of Southern California’s rowing team and Monica McGavin of Mountainside will be part of the Track and Field program for Lehigh University.

Julia Schmuckler, a varsity starter for all four years of Kent Place School, was awarded the “Unsung Hero” award for the 2015 season. Schmuckler started playing lacrosse in third grade for the Harding Township recreation lacrosse league and has played for The Peck School, Kent Place School and T3 Elite for the past 10 years.

Olivia Reiter, a coxswain, joined the Mountain Lakes Rowing Club in 2013, where she placed 2nd in the Mid-Atlantic region in the Women’s Novice 4 event, and won the “Most Inspirational” award for her team. In the spring of 2014, she placed 2nd in the Mid-Atlantic region in the Men’s Lightweight 4+ event. This qualified her for the USRowing Youth Nationals in Sacramento, CA, where she went on to win 5th in the nation Following six years of competitive gymnastics at Surgent’s Elite in Westfield,

Monica McGavin transitioned to the varsity Track and Field and Cross Country teams at Kent Place, becoming the 2015 Outdoor Track High Jump Champion, Union County Conference, Valley Division. She was also the 2015 Indoor Track High Jump Champion, NJ Prep Championship, placed second in High Jump at the 2015 Outdoor NJSIAA Sectionals, Non-Public A, and was a recipient of the “Unsung Hero” and “Sportsmanship” awards at Kent Place. McGavin was also a member of the Kent Place 4x800M Relay Team.

Oak Knoll Athletes Sign!

our senior athletes from Oak Knoll School of the Holy Fconfirming Child signed early National Letters of Intent recently, their commitment to continue athletic pursuits at the collegiate level.

Joined by their parents, faculty and administrators, Kirby Comizio, signed with Duke University to play field hockey, while Cassandra Ford, Katherine Kelly and Jacklyn McCall signed to play lacrosse for the University of Notre Dame, Colgate University and the University of California - Berkeley, respectively.

All-Conference, League, Group and Division. Like Comizio, Ford was also named Third Team All-State.

• Comizio, of Basking Ridge, has played field hockey since middle school at midfield and defense positions. A four-year player at Oak Knoll and the team’s current captain, Comizio was named Third Team All-State last year. Comizio also currently serves as the president of Oak Knoll’s Athletic Council.

• Kelly, of Summit, has played both soccer and lacrosse each year at Oak Knoll.

Kelly also has been a member of Oak Knoll’s ice hockey club team since its inaugural season in 2014. During her freshman year in lacrosse, Kelly was recognized for outstanding defense. She was similarly honored as MVP of the ice hockey team last year.

• Ford, of Summit, helped lead the team that won the lacrosse program’s first Tournament of Champions title in June. Ford also played soccer and basketball at Oak Knoll. As a member of the lacrosse team, Ford earned U.S Lacrosse High School All-American honors. She was selected First-Team

• McCall, of Summit, has been playing lacrosse for five years. She played as goalie during her freshman, sophomore and junior campaigns. She is especially proud of winning the TOC last year and is eager to join her teammates this spring when the nationally-ranked team will look to defend its crown.

Summit Public Art Hosted Sculptor Jay Lagemann ummit Public Art (The Mayor’s Partnership for Summit Art) recently S held a cocktail reception for its members and the public. Sculptor Jay Lagemann, who currently has two works on exhibit in the Summit, was the special guest at the event.

Lagemann spoke about his work, his inspiration, and how he actually makes his art. A long-time resident of Martha’s Vineyard, his work is displayed around the country in many public places and in many private collections.

The two sculptures now on display in Summit are “The Dance,” on the lawn in front of the Summit Community Center on Morris Avenue, and “Speedo,” in the Promenade Park in downtown Summit. (The installation of The Dance was made possible in part thanks to the generous contribution to Summit Public Art by Frank’s Tree Services.)

Hometowne TV Announces Awards HomeTowne Television has announced that they have selected four distinguished healthcare professionals to be the 7th annual recipients of The Fred Honold Award for Community Service.

The Award recognizes individuals who, in giving unselfishly of time and talent, make the community a better place for family, friends and neighbors. The Awards will be given at the Summit-based television studio’s annual holiday party at the Beacon Hill Club in Summit on Thursday, December 10th.

Tide Dry Cleaners Opens First Location In Summit Nickar, LLC in collaboration with Agile Pursuits Franchising, Inc., a whollyowned subsidiary of Procter & Gamble (P&G), has opened the newest Tide Dry Cleaners The Summit location is the first location in the Summit-Short Hills area, and the 35th Tide Dry Cleaners location nationwide, applying Tide’s® 65 years of fabric care experience, GreenEarth® Cleaning technology and concierge services to meet customers’ needs.

“We are excited to bring our family-owned Tide Dry Cleaners to the SummitShort Hills area. Summit Beautification Project Complete The City of Summit has completed a threemonth long downtown beautification project that replaced handicapped ramps, repaired deteriorated sections of sidewalk and curbs, and enhanced public spaces.

“Successful downtown projects not only help to expand business, employment, and shopping opportunities, but also increase and strengthen the social activity and quality of life in the community,” explains Summit Mayor Ellen Dickson. “This project represents a much-needed update to our downtown streetscape. We will welcome the holidays with added charm and increased accessibility this year.”

Significant improvements were made to sidewalks, curbs, storm water catch basins and driveway aprons along sections of the downtown. Wayfinding signs were also added in this area along with decorative seating walls at the Promenade Park on Springfield Avenue and Lyric Park adjacent to the Bank Street parking lot.

All of Summit’s leaders are encouraging everyone in the region to come to Downtown Summit and enjoy our stores, restaurants, service establishments during this holiday season.

John Blasi Honored By Children’s Specialized Hospital

J

ohn Blasi, President of Lindabury, McCormick, Estabrook & Cooper, and a member of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors was recently honored by

Children’s Specialized Hospital of Mountainside at their 28th Annual Umbrella Gala. John was named by the Hospital as their 2015 Corporate Leadership honoree in recognition of his and the Lindabury firm’s generosity and commitment to supporting the Hospital and the services it provides to children and their families. The Gala was held at the skating rink at Rockefeller Center, attended by several hundred guests.

This year’s Gala helped to raise $200,000 that will fund the Hospital’s newest TeleMedicine technology.

this year’s Gala was Lou Maschi who was recognized as the Hospital’s 2015 Distinguished Individual honoree.

John has been involved with Children’s Specialized Hospital since the late 1980’s and has served in leadership roles with the organization including as Chairman of the Hospital’s Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2005. “It is an honor to be recognized by Children’s Specialized Hospital,” said Blasi. “I am proud to be associated with such an amazing organization that works tirelessly to aid and support patients who need specialized medical care.”

Books and Society From Ancient Greece to contemporary America, writers have used books to present the issues of the day. Jon Plaut will speak on “Books and Society”. Based on a course he’s currently teaching at Rutgers-OLLI-RU, Mr. Plaut will explore some of these issues, including women?s status, freedom and existentialism, social responsibility, and institutional racism?as reflected in works such as Homer’s “Odyssey”, “A Room of Her Own”, “Romeo and Juliet”, and National Book Award winner “Between the World and Me”.
