he Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families, providing its 48th consecutive year of complimentary holiday shopping. The shop serves more than 500 low income families and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights who are referred by local social service agencies. The Santa Claus Shop guests personally select a household item, new clothing for each member of their immediate family, a hat and mittens, a book, and new toy for each child. Local volunteers are responsible for the shop set up, personal shopping services for each guest, gift wrapping and clean up.

This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 587 Springfield Avenue in Summit. The Santa Claus Shop will be hosting a holiday gathering for senior citizens Tuesday, December 1st. Families will be offered shopping hours by invitation only on Wednesday, December 2nd. Oratory Prep Named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School Oratory Prep was recently selected as a National Blue Ribbon school for 2015. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made the official announcement that 50 private schools and 285 public schools from across the country have been chosen for this prestigious honor based on academic excellence. Of the 50 private schools, Oratory is one of only two secondary schools to receive this distinction.

On November 20, 21 and 22, performers from Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre’s talented ensemble will present a cabaret of songs from the golden age of American popular music. Composers such as Harold Arlen, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Jerome Kern will be showcased in this retrospective of favorite tunes from the 1920s through the 1950s.

The performances will include musical accompaniment, and are scheduled for 8 PM on Friday and 2 PM on Saturday and Sunday. All seats are $25. The theatre is located in Oakes Center, at 120 Morris Avenue, Summit.

“Two thumbs up!” my dining guest declared enthusiastically as he tucked happily into one of our entrees – and that sentiment echoed enthusiastically throughout our terrific evening at Summit’s Marco Polo Restaurant and Tavern.

A popular staple of the Summit dining scene since 1934 and owned since 1965 by the family of current co-owners Agapios Kyritsis and his brother-in-law and chef, Apostolos Apostokou. Marco Polo cheerfully combines a multi-layered, crowd-pleasing menu with excellent food and a welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant sports a handsome, clubby interior and an attractive, sophisticated bar that blends quietly into the ambiance.

Since 1992 Agapios Kyritsis has carried on a legacy begun by his grandfather, Michael Christopher and passed on to his son-in-law, Agapios’ father, Socrates both of whom grew a small Summit pizza place into today’s popular gathering place.

Traveling westward in the Mediterranean area brought us to Italy and our Eggplant Rollatini entrée, $15.95, Stuffed with creamy ricotta and topped with a sassy tomato sauce, the rollatini is complemented with angel hair pasta for a palate pleasing entrée.

Chicken Balsamico, $18.95, is a savory delight, the boneless cutlet sauteed with mushrooms and shallots with a hint of garlic in a light balsamic demi-glaze. Marco Polo offers two versions of it 14-ounce French Center Cut Rib Chop, one with sautéed peppers, onions and mushrooms and the simpler Tuscany version, which we chose. This is a lighter rendering of the rib chop, broiled to perfection and brushed with garlic, olive oil and Italian herbs, allowing the rich flavor of the chop to shine through.

Years ago, grandfather Michael handpicked Agapios Kyritsis to be his culinary heir. “You’re the one,” he told him, and Mr. Kyritsis has taken that charge very seriously, always ensuring that the food, the service and the reputation of Marco Polo Restaurant and Tavern remain first-rate. After all, with the fourth generation of the family waiting in the wings, he has a priceless legacy to preserve.

The Holiday Handcraft Sale benefitting the impoverished garbage collecting families of

Cairo, the Zabbaleen Community, is celebrating its 11th Summit Year – December 5th and 6th, Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM at American Red Cross, 695 Springfield Avenue, Summit, NJ. All proceeds from the sale of handmade quilts, totes, rugs, placemats, unique holiday items and a selection of paper goods go directly to support these families in providing early education for their children and opening a new path of life for their parents.

The Summit sale has been sponsored by Marilyn Pfaltz and her Bryn Mawr College classmates, native Egyptian Sue Habachy and sister Nimet. The sisters originated the first sale in New York City twenty-three years ago and its annual tradition is a large part of this remarkable up from poverty story.

The current turmoil in Egypt has closed down the traditional sales outlet for these crafts in Cairo and drastically affected the income for the two schools at the Community Center where the women produce all the goods. Our Summit contribution is very important in support of changing the lives of the Zabbaleen Community. It is a special delivery gift to them from us.

Boy Scouts of America, Patriots’ Path Council recently

honored six local citizens at the 10th Annual Berkeley Heights Good Scout Award Dinner This year’s honorees were Joseph Bruno, Jeanmarie Grisi, Louisa and Terrence Grossman, The Hall Family, and Pam Steiner. The event recognizes outstanding citizens for their community service, as evidenced by their leadership and interests within the Berkeley Heights community, and for their embodiment of the values of the century old Scout Oath and Law in their personal and professional lives.

The Arboretums holiday festivities continue on Saturday December 5th with “Cookies and Cocoa with Santa”, and a special Holiday Concert followed by “Put the Pub in Public Gardens” Vodka & Latke’s . Cookies and Cocoa is a fun morning for young families where your child can have a snack and take a picture with Santa while telling him if they have been naughty or nice. The kids can do their own gift shopping at the Holiday Boutique which will remain open for this event. Cookies and Cocoa runs from 10am to 2pm and is $10 per child. At 7pm that evening, the Arboretum will host a Holiday Concert featuring internationally renowned jazz vocalist, Cyrille Aimee, performing a program of classic jazz standards, original material, and seasonal favorites with her own special take.

The evening ends with “Vodka & Latkes,” a signature Put the “PUB” in Public Garden Arboretum event, featuring vodka samplings supplied

Oct 30 SPARC’ling Evening of Song Masquerade Ball! A spectacular evening of SHS alumni performances, auction bidding and culinary indulgences. Funds raised will benefit the performing arts programs of all seven Summit public schools. SPARC’ling Evening of Song is an elegant evening of vocal performances from Summit High School Alumni and staff. For the past four years, as the school year kicks into gear, SPARC hosts this evening of musical entertainment that rivals a Broadway Cabaret show. Summit High School’s Annual Pledge Day Campaign Summit High School music students will canvas the City of Summit on Sunday, Nov. 1, between noon and 4 p.m., as participants in the Summit Music Parents Association’s (SMPA) annual campaign, Pledge Day. A fundraising tradition, band, orchestra and chorus students will ask the community for financial support that is vital to the school’s music programs.

All the money collected goes to support the excellent music program and is used to fund scholarships, replace instruments and equipment and bring in renowned musicians to teach master classes. Pledge Day also helps subsidize music trips to festivals and competitions, an example of which is captured above as Summit High School?s marching band, “The Pride of Summit” showcased their talents at Walt Disney World last spring. The Hollywood Songbook The Hollywood Songbook is the second project of The Central Players, a year-old theatre troupe in residence at the Central Presbyterian Church. Produced in collaboration with the Continuo Arts Foundation, the show will be a benefit for the new company. Nov 22 History of Masonic Lodge #93 F & AM in Madison Greg LaConte, a past master of the Lodge and currently serving in the position of Senior Warden and Edgar Coster, a past Master of the Lodge, who now serves in the post of Lodge Secretary will discuss the history of both Madison Lodge #93 F&AM and the organization’s building, with a focus on the role that both have played in the history of Chatham. The building was originally erected in 1824 as the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township.

Madison Lodge was formed in 1869, when Madison was still part of Chatham Township, and has resided at their current facilities since 1931. Madison Lodge continues to play a role in the Chatham community. Mr. LaConte currently serves as Township Clerk for Chatham Township and is a Township resident. Mr. Coster has served on the Chatham Township Board of Education.

Downtown will be bathed in candlelight from 5-8PM on Friday, Dec. 4 for the Candlelight Stroll. The tree lighting will be in the Promenade at 5PM, followed by ice sculpting, carolers and special promotions from downtown businesses and restaurants.

Saturday, Dec. 5 will be Santa’s North Pole Party!

Santa and his elves will stroll through town from 1:30-2PM then greet children in the Promenade from 2-4PM. Activities by local nonprofits will be in the Promenade, as well as horse and carriage rides from Lyric Park from 2-4PM.
