ur youngest son, Todd, graduated from Marine Boot Camp on Parris Island in late August. I, who am never bothered by the heat, got off the plane in Savannah and said, “Holy sweet J—s, how does anybody move down here in this heat!” Later, I said to Todd, “All you ever need to put on a resume is that you are an Eagle Scout and that you completed Parrish Island in June, July and August. If the prospective employer can’t figure out that you can complete anything you set out to do—they are not worth working for.”

We had a quick turnaround because Bryan, our middle son, was set to graduate Coast Guard Boot camp during the first week of September—so off to Cape May NJ we set, with my parents (former Assemblyman Hugo and Marilyn Pfaltz), and Todd in tow. Coast Guard graduates may have a family member who has served or is serving present their graduating certificate. It was arranged that my father, Korean War Navy veteran, would be escorted by son and new Marine, Todd. However, when the two went to the training for the presentation they were told that someone else had been tapped to make the presentation, and would not specify who. There were a number of Coast Guard brass on hand for the ceremony. We figured perhaps one of them had requested a role in the proceedings. Oh well. Papa was disappointed. But as he said, it is the Coast Guard’s show. So we let it lie. As we waited for the preparatory movie about the training process to begin ,our oldest son, John, called on the cell phone to say that he was in a bar in Tokyo and wanted to congratulate his brother. We said he was 2 hours too early. Call back after 12 noon when the ceremony would be over to speak with his brothers all together

The graduation proceeded and in time they came to Bryan. I heard the announcer call Bryan’s name, saying his presenter was his brother—wait a minute screeched my brain—his brother is sitting next to me—darn it – they had got it wrong after all…. When the next words were, “Naval Lieutenant John Welsh”. Eeee gads!!. Imagine our surprise when John was the one making the presentation!

ent Place School senior Amara Balan of Short Hills has been named a semifinalist in the 2016 National Merit® Scholarship Program which honors “students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.”

Approximately 1.5 million high school juniors entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which screened the program entrants based on their test scores. The number of semifinalists represents less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States.

To become a finalist, students must complete an extensive scholarship application that discusses their academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership skills and other honors they have received. The finalists will be named in the spring and summer of 2016.

n Thursday, October 22nd, 2015, the Overlook Auxiliary proudly presents its biennial Kitchen Tour. This highly anticipated event will showcase 6 spectacular kitchens in the Summit area. All of the homes on the tour have been designed and decorated by some of the most elite architects, decorators, designers and builders in New Jersey. Proceeds from this year’s tour will directly benefit the expansion of the Eating Disorders Program at the Overlook Goryeb Children’s Center to include children ages 8-12. This cutting edge facility currently is the only medically based eating disorders program in New Jersey to provide comprehensive treatment exclusively for adolescent patients, between the ages of 12 and 21 years, with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related disorders as both inpatients and outpatients. The expansion of the program will allow Overlook to extend the program to even younger children struggling with this complex disorder.

….. “When will the goats be coming back to the Arboretum?” Well, mark your calendars because the goats return to Reeves-Reed Arboretum on Thursday, October 15!

With help from donors, the Arboretum is able to bring back Larry Cihanek’s ‘green goats’ to clear the historic Daffodil Bowl. The ‘kids’ whom we all met on Daffodil Day last April have grown and are ready for a repeat performance as nature’s lawnmowers. Why goats? “Goats eat all day,” says RRA’s Executive Director Frank Juliano. “And what a wonderful way to engage and educate our community about an eco-friendly process that ordinarily takes months of hard, hand labor to achieve.”

Visitors are being offered the chance to sponsor a goat and help support the Arboretum’s “green goats initiative.” Just go to their website and click on the “green goats” link, and for $25 per goat, you can send a “kid” to the Arboretum, and receive your very own official “tax deductible” certificate of ‘good goatsmanship.’

The goats are coming back to the Arboretum this Fall with your help! Larry Cihaneck’s ‘green goats’ will be back to help us clear the historic Daffodil Bowl. This eco-friendly land management practice will take place with your help! You get an unforgettable, elegant night out celebrating a SPARC’ling Evening of Song—the Summit Performing Arts Resource Committee’s 6th annual soiree which raises funds for the performing arts programs of all Summit Public Schools.

To be held for the first time at the stately, historic Grand Summit Hotel, the semi-formal event runs from 7:30 – 10:30 on October 30th. Attendees are encouraged to wear an optional “Masquerade Party” mask to keep with the Halloween weekend theme.

Summit High School graduates and current staff will dazzle the crowd with Broadway favorites, accompanied by Summit’s own David Peck and Yoav Efron. The ever-popular and lively former LCJSMS Principal turned Director of Human Resources Matthew Block, will wow the room as the Master of Ceremonies.

“SPARC contributes so much to the performing arts programs at all our schools,” said Block. “This is a perfect opportunity for ever yone to support SPARC in its mission to provide a well-rounded

arts education to our students. It is sure to be another fabulous night of entertainment and fun.”

The event will include a live and a silent auction.

Money raised by the event allows SPARC to help bridge the gap between funds budgeted by the school district and money actually needed for our schools to continue to stage awardwinning. During the 2014-2015 school year alone, SPARC funded more than $45,300 in grants throughout the entire Summit school district.

Oct 30 SPARC’ling Evening of Song Masquerade Ball! A spectacular evening of SHS alumni performances, auction bidding and culinary indulgences. Funds raised will benefit the performing arts programs of all seven Summit public schools. SPARC’ling Evening of Song is an elegant evening of vocal performances from Summit High School Alumni and staff. For the past four years, as the school year kicks into gear, SPARC hosts this evening of musical entertainment that rivals a Broadway Cabaret show. Former SHS students and staff treat the audience to a private evening of song. It?s a testament to the Summit Public School district?s performing arts programs that these young adults make it a priority to return and perform for us. The SPARC’ling Evening of Song features both a traditional Silent Auction and a “Reverse Auction”, which is a unique live auction where opening bids start high, and then progress backwards in incremental levels. Over the years, donations raised through the Reverse Auction have enabled SPARC to fund microphone purchases at the high school, Musical rights to productions at both the high school and the middle school, as well as Speech & Debate (forensics) workshops at the high school.
