Celgene Breaks Ground for New Building in Summit

A

ceremonial groundbreaking took place recently in Summit at Celgene’s corporate headquarters on Morris Avenue.

On hand to kick off the construction of a new multi-story building were Gov. Chris Christie, Congressman Leonard Lance, Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, Summit Mayor Ellen Dickson, Celgene CEO and Chairman Robert Hugin, and Celgene Senior Vice-President Rich Bagger.

Celgene is a global pharmaceutical research company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of new methods for treating cancer and immune-inflammatory related diseases in patients with limited treatment options.

Gov. Christie said “Celgene has created over 1,600 jobs in New Jersey since the start of their participation in NJ’s Business Employment Incentive Program.”

Congressman Lance offered, “New Jersey is the medicine cabinet of the world, and we will continue to be so as long as Celgene and other great companies invest in New Jersey, as Celgene is doing today.”

he fourth annual “Tying the Communities Together” Awards Dinner, sponsored and hosted by the Suburban Chamber of Commerce, was a successful event with 200 guests in attendance. Held at The Grand Summit Hotel in late March, the evening saw the presentation of six awards, whose recipients were selected by public nomination.

Summit Fifth Graders Attend Fifth Annual Sensitivity Training at SAGE Approximately 75 fifth grade students from Summit’s Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School recently participated in sensitivity training at SAGE Eldercare as part of the fifth annual intergenerational program connecting the school and SAGE. As part of the program, students were given vision-impaired glasses and rubber gloves with cotton inside the fingertips, to make them aware of how difficult it is to feel and use items and to see. Dealing with impaired hearing was another part of the training, and feeding each other applesauce helped them to understand what it’s like to rely on a caregiver and not be in control.

Marianne Kranz, SAGE Eldercare’s Director of Volunteers, reminded the students that they might not always be able to do the kinds of activities that

they were used to doing as a young person. Deanna Butters, Director of SAGE’s Spend-A-Day program, spoke to the students about the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and why they might need to be more patient and understanding of someone with the disease. The students were also encouraged to “stay healthy and active, eat right, and take care of themselves” so that they could age gracefully.

In addition to the sensitivity training, the students also interacted with the adult members of SAGE’s Spend-ADay Adult Day Health Center by playing bingo, participating in a question and answer session with some of the older adults serving as panelists, and participating in exercise programs.

Academy of OLP Robotics Team Wins State Championship Award and program a robot which completes many designated tasks in the competition.

The “Panther Power” Robotics Team studied and researched issues faced by local governments and emergency responders in dealing with natural disasters.

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace Robotics Team The students observed the device currently used and won the Championship Award at the FIRST Lego League found that the wooden sticks easily warp and become (“FLL”) State Championship at Mount Olive High School. covered in mold. In response, the Panther Power team FLL Robotics is a global competition where each team designed and created the “Stickler of Safety” (“SOS”), a must research and solve a current real-world issue. The SOS is challenging teams to propose solutions to issues created non-conductive, sturdy, and buoyant and doesn’t mold or by natural disasters. Each team must also assemble splinter. Panther Power was excited to create a better

alternative to the wooden device currently in use, and donated several to the NPPD. The students also shared the results of their research and innovative solution with New Providence residents and members of the Borough Council at a recent community meeting and with state officials at the NJ State League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City.

After winning the Championship Award at a regional competition in November, the team was invited to compete at the FLL State Finals, as it has every year since the program began. In March, the AOLP Panther Power Team competed against the top 60 ranked teams in New Jersey. After earning very high marks for its robot performance and presentation to a panel of judges, Panther Power achieved the rank of State Champions / 2ND Place and won the FLL State Champion’s Award recognizing their excellence and innovative solution.

Following its big win at the FLL State Finals, the Panther Power team has been invited to attend the prestigious FLL North American Open Championship at Legoland California in May, to compete against the top teams in the country. The Academy of Our Lady of Peace and the community of New Providence are very proud of its students and congratulate AOLP Panther Power on its impressive win at the FLL State Finals and its invitation to the FLL National Competition!

Kent Place Middle School Science Expo Showcases Student Research Projects Kent Place teachers, students and families gathered recently for an evening celebrating scientific exploration. They observed research projects created by Middle School students on display in Kent Place’s Upper School for the annual Science Expo.

Kent Place Upper School students and members of the Science National Honor Society were on hand to support their younger counterparts. An award ceremony followed the presentations.

The sixth grade students’ research projects tested various claims made about consumer products. In one example, a team hypothesized how effective certain antibacterial products are in killing bacteria.

Seventh grade students were challenged to create “Sustainable Cities.” They were asked to collaborate together as a class and build a sustainable city, addressing various environmental issues that the earth is currently facing. In the process of creating

their modern model cities, the students applied the engineering process and learned practical skills regarding design, electricity, and renewable resources.

The eighth grade Expo projects focused on “Science in Your Life.” Students built on their knowledge of the scientific process as they experienced firsthand how science concepts apply to real world situations.

Through their research and experiments they expanded their understanding of everyday phenomena and learned that questioning is the starting point to deeper understanding.

“You could feel the excitement in the air as the students prepared to present their project findings,” stated Wendy Hall, Chair of the Kent Place Science Department.

“They spent weeks researching, designing and investigating various topics, and during the Expo they came together to celebrate science and all they have learned.”

Two Summit Schools Lacrosse Teams Raise Funds for Cancer Research The lacrosse teams from Oratory Prep School and Summit High School recently ran a joint fundraiser to help fight the deadly childhood cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). The event featured two games in which the teams played out-of-state teams, and included fun activities like face painting, music, food, items for sale, and contests. Summit High raised more than $1,200 towards the event from the sale of items and the spirit dinner. Oratory Prep defeated The Shipley School (PA) 7-4, and Summit defeated Lincoln Sudbury (MA) with a score of 9-4.

This event was held in honor of two young girls who died recently of DIPG, 6-year-old Juliana Donnelly of West Caldwell and 5-year-old Brooke Healy of New Providence. The two little girls are gone, but the disease--a tumor lodged in the middle of the brain stem- continues to ravage. (The median overall survival of children diagnosed for DIPG is nine months; the 1- and 2-year survival rates are approximately 30 percent. The statistics, according to the National Cancer Institute, make this one of the most devastating pediatric malignancies.)

This form of cancer hit very close to home among the Oratory lacrosse family. Juliana was the niece of Rams head coach Kevin Donnelly.

LCJ Summit Middle School Contributes to Autism Campaign In early April, on Autism Awareness Day, part of April is Autism Awareness Month, students at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School teamed up with Zappia’s Pizzeria and Zappia’s Deli in downtown Summit to create a Dine to Donate event. The event ran from 6am, when the Deli opened, to 10pm, when the pizzeria closed.

A portion of the day’s proceeds went to Ashrams for Autism, an organization that creates yoga programs and facilities where individuals with autism can live, work, and contribute to the community. Ryann Cash, an aide in the ABA classroom in the school, felt the event went well and the students learned from the experience.

THE RUBBER DUCKY RACE RETURNS! May 31 will see thousands of small yellow rubber ducks floating down the Passaic River in Berkeley Heights when the tenth annual Rubber Ducky Festival is held.

Sponsored by the Berkeley Heights Rotary Club, the festival is a family-oriented afternoon of fun, food, and music featuring a selection of local teen bands, a Car Show, the Rubber Ducky Race, games, water balloons, a Moonwalk and Dunk Tank, and more!

Here’s how it works: Each duck is “adopted” for $5, and then all are launched in the Passaic River where they “race” to the finish line at Passaic River Park off Springfield Avenue. The “parents” of the duck that crosses the finish line first receive prizes donated by local businesses.

This year¹s Grand Prize is a 46” Samsung 1080P HDTV. The funds raised go to support various organizations, including the YMCA in Berkeley Heights and the Berkeley Heights

Summer Concert Series.

The Festival opens at noon on May 31 (rain or shine) and the games and rides and fun last until 4 PM. There is no entrance fee. Food by Yogoccino and treats from Charlie the Ice Cream Man will keep stomachs happy. Live music will keep everyone entertained throughout the afternoon. The Car Show will run until 3 PM when the trophies are awarded, and the actual Rubber Ducky Race will go from 3 until 4, with the winners’ prizes announced at approximately 4 PM. Rubber ducks can be “adopted” in Berkeley Heights at Investors Bank and the Berkeley Heights YMCA. In New Providence, ducks can be adopted at Prudential NJ Properties. Ducks can also be adopted at the Festival.

Berkeley Heights Rotary Club Donates World Books and More to All BH Schools The Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights recently donated World Book Encyclopedias to the Columbia, Hughes, Mountain Park, and Woodward Schools; a set of Animals of the World books to the Mary Kay McMillin School; and a set of career books to Governor Livingston High School. The funding for these books came from the proceeds of this year’s Rotary Community Pancake Breakfast as well as donations from club members.

“In today’s tight economy, these books are invaluable to our schools’ Media Specialists, libraries, and students,” confirmed Laurie Scott, Berkeley Heights District Media Supervisor. “We’ve already put them to use,” added Marilyn Merrill of the Mountain Park and Woodward Schools. “Our students have begun team research assignments using these encyclopedias.”

Allstate Foundation Donates to Summit Lions Club The Allstate Foundation recently granted $1000 to the Summit Lions Club at Marco Polo Restaurant in Summit. Since 1926, the Summit Lions have served the needs of the blind and visually impaired in the Summit area. The Lions recycle eyeglasses, provide eye exams for Summit children, and help support other local charities and community organizations.

The Summit Free Market Returns May 3 The City of Summit announces the return of its immensely popular Summit Free Market on May 3 from 8 am to 3 pm at the City of Summit Transfer Station, 40 New Providence Road in Summit.

The Summit Free Market Committee is a student-run initiative that hosts seasonal events at the Transfer Station where residents are able to bring reusable, yard-sale quality items to share, and take whatever they may want or need. It’s all free. “The Summit Free Market has become an important community event,” explained Beth D. Kinney, Director of Community Services for the City of Summit. “Volunteers of all ages participate in running the market and residents look forward to the opportunity to come share items, as well as to browse.”

Since its inception in 2008, the Summit Free Market has kept over 80 tons of reusable material out of the waste stream.

Dispose of Unwanted Medications at Summit’s Project Medicine Drop The City of Summit Police Department would like to remind area residents about its Project Medicine Drop, a permanent box in the atrium of Summit City Hall, 512 Springfield Avenue, Summit, where members of the public may deposit unwanted medications with no questions asked. The Police Department then disposes of deposited material according to normal procedures associated with the destruction of controlled dangerous substances.

Summit Police Chief Robert Weck explained, “The statistics concerning prescription drug abuse are stunning. The Drug Enforcement Administration reports that prescription drugs are responsible for more overdose deaths than many ‘street drugs’ such as cocaine and methamphetamines. A permanent site is an important option for the residents of Summit and those in our neighboring communities. Please use it.”

The City Hall atrium is open and the drop box is available to members of the public from 7 am to 9 pm daily.

Sunday, June 1 - Run for Charity & Fun! Tot Trot Tot Trot is a fun day of family activities held every year at Memorial Field, 5 Myrtle Avenue (and Ashland Road) in Summit. The 36th annual event will take place from 11 am to 2 pm. The day begins with runner registration, a petting zoo, moon bounces, games, prizes, food and more. The event culminates in Fun Run Races for 2-10 year old children, beginning at 1 pm.

Tot Trot is sponsored by the Summit Junior Fortnightly Club and funds raised benefit The Eating Disorders Program at Overlook Medical Center.
