BLESSING THE SKIES

By Oliver Sirrell According to UCAS, there were 235,000 18 year olds accepted into university in 2015.

This was the most ever recorded at the time.

Those who went to university that year will now be in their final years, but for Tom Axson, higher education was quite literal: instead of writing essays, he is training to become a pilot.

Tom planned to go straight to flight school once he finished his A-levels. The cost of a two-year course with CTC Aviation group will set the 21-year-old back £124,000, but Tom wasn’t fazed by the price.

“I’ve been interested in transport from a young age. I decided I wanted to travel the world after going to India on cricket tours, so I thought what’s the best way to go and see different places and get paid for it?

“By the time I was 14 I knew exactly what I wanted to do and where I was hoping the journey would take me.”

So far, the journey has taken him to Phoenix, Arizona in the United States and back to Bournemouth here in the UK.

Starting in September 2016, the first half a year of Tom’s course was spent focusing on theory work and another 14 exams followed. But after that, Tom set off for 8 months of intensive training in Arizona, USA. Here he would be flying a single propeller engine in preparation for his Commercial Pilot’s Licence skills test. This involved emergency practices like turning the engine off mid-flight and a full restart in the air - sometimes in temperatures of up to 48ºc.

“It is frightening. In summer, it used to get quite uncomfortable. Occasionally you would get some really heavy turbulence and you don’t feel 100% after you’ve been through it.”

But despite the trickier times, Tom’s flying experience in America was one he cherished.

However, it has not been all plain-sailing for Tom, as he failed the entrance exams required to be accepted onto the course in 2016, but his failure “probably turned out to be a blessing in disguise”.

“The most enjoyable flying I do is at night. In Arizona, we could see as far as the horizon could go and it was stunning to look out west to see the mountains obscuring California. But then at night, everything’s quieter, the air is a lot smoother, you don’t have to think about flying the aircraft at all.”

He re-took the tests six months later and passed exams on short-term memory, mathematics and mental capacity.

Now back in the UK, Tom has been flying double-propeller planes from Bournemouth.

This phase is instrument only - meaning in a 2-hour flight, Tom will only be allowed to look out of the window for about 30 seconds. The south-east England airspace is one of the busiest in the world and Tom claims that training in Bournemouth has been a ‘massive step up’ from his lessons in Phoenix, where the airspace ‘wasn’t very busy’. “(In Bournemouth) you have to be very precise in what you say, you have to be very precise in how you fly, tolerances are not very big at all. You’ve got to be very aware of what you’re doing.”

After this stage is finished Tom will complete his training in Southampton, where he will learn how to use jet-powered planes. He will be fully qualified by late summer.

The ultimate goal for Tom is to become a captain on a legacy carrier like British Airways, but this could take up to 20 years of flying experience. Nevertheless, Tom is in it for the long haul.

“The overall feeling of flying is unbelievable.

For me, even if the pay wasn’t good, the opportunity to get up to altitude and look outside….

In my opinion, it’s the best office window in the world.”

FEATURES Following the second World War, the discovery of nuclear fission saw the U.S.A, Germany and the Soviet Union begin developing weapons more devastating than anything seen before.

July 1945 saw the first nuclear test, carried out by the USA. The following month saw two nuclear bombs, endearingly named ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Fat Man’ dropped on Japan, killing over 200,000 and ending the second World War. Russia, then the Soviet Union, carried out their first nuclear test in 1949 which increased tensions between them and the U.S that in turn escalated into the Cold War. Unlike most wars between large nations they never directly fought, however many ‘proxy wars’ did take place. The fact both the U.S.A and the Soviet Union had a nuclear arsenal was the reason behind the stalemate, through fear of ‘mutually assured destruction’ whereby if one nation used their weapons, the other would have nothing to lose from using their own.

The Cold War died as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

NUCLEAR WAR WHAT IS THERE TO WORRY ABOUT? The past year has seen the apparent threat of nuclear war become a topic of every day conversation. The likelihood of worldwide destruction is often exaggerated but should nuclear war be something to be seriously worried about?

The development of nuclear weapons has since continued and it is believed there are around 16,300 split between nine countries, the U.S and Russia own around 14,500 of these. The most recent nation to develop these weapons is North Korea, who tested theirs in 2006.

It’s now North Korea who are seen as the biggest threat; namely their leader Kim Jong-Un. In his New Year’s Day speech, he stated ‘The U.S should know that the button for nuclear weapons is on my desk. This is not blackmail but reality’. Jong-Un did later claim in the speech how the weapons being developed were purely made as a deterrent saying, ‘These weapons will be used only if our security is threatened’.

Tensions are high in the east already.

September and November saw North Korea test two missiles, both of which flew over Japan, triggering missile alerts and sending panic across the nation. Both missiles ended their short flights in the sea and neither were carrying a nuclear warhead, however it does show that North Korea is rapidly developing its nuclear arsenal.

As westerners, the majority would believe North Korea to be the greatest threat, however ask North Korea and all fingers would point towards Donald Trump and the U.S. The 45th President has not hidden his feelings towards North Korea during his first year as President, christening Kim Jong-Un as ‘little rocket man’ and also ever so eloquently getting across on Twitter how he’d ‘never call him short and fat’.

Incendiary comments on the social media platform is one of Trump’s specialties and this was also seen following Jong-Un’s New Year’s Day speech. Taking to Twitter, Trump bragged about his own nuclear button being ‘much bigger & more powerful’ than his Korean counterpart’s.

Unsurprisingly North Korea doesn’t have the best reputation, currently suffering from huge food shortages, having been ruled by the Kim family dynasty since its inception as a country and being known as ‘The Hermit Kingdom’ it leaves much to be desired. In reality, North Korea is really not a nation you’d expect to be going toe to toe with the most powerful nation in the world.

So, despite the doom-predicting headlines and Trump and Kim Jong-Un’s war of words, it’s a safe assumption that the world won’t be ending at the hands of those two any time soon.

Pay Gap

Problem Latest UK figures show that in higher level positions such as CEOs, women are on average earning almost 25% less than men in similar or the same roles, and this kind of inequality is rife particularly throughout the media sector.

The BBC in particular has come under recent scrutiny, with female employees opening up both publicly and anonymously to share their experiences with pay discrimination. Last year, the taxpayer owned company was forced into publicising the salaries of their highest earning employees, after people began to ask questions about how ethical their own payroll really was. Among other things, it was revealed that within the 14 people that lay in the top 10 pay brackets within the BBC, just two are women.

In 1970 an act was passed demanding equal pay for all.

Nearly 50 years later and women in the media are still fighting for fairness in their pay cheques.

By Beth Dean As shocking as the figures are, the BBC’s problem may have actually been worse not all that long ago.

A female TV presenter - who didn’t want to reveal her identity for risk of losing her position – claimed to ‘The Guardian’ last month that weeks before the salaries were made public, she herself got a large pay rise and found out that she was being underpaid by “tens of thousands” compared to her male co-host.

Studying to work in one of the most competitive industries out there is a daunting enough prospect, but when you’re faced with the possibility of making less money than your male course-mates for doing the same job – it’s an unfortunate and uncertain future for the aspiring women of the media.

I spoke to first year Bournemouth University Multimedia Journalism student Courtney Hill how she feels about attempting to enter an industry that seems to be plagued with gender inequity: “Growing up gay and a woman I’ve been at a disadvantage my whole life, and so going into an occupation where I’m less valued than a male counterpart wouldn’t be much of a culture shock to me” she told me.

Miss Hill went on to say that it isn’t something that concerns her, rather: ‘inspires’ her to work harder and ‘fight for an equal environment.’

As a young woman entering an industry that has such old-fashioned views she feels that “we have a real opportunity to level the playing field.”

But it seems women of today are not allowing this to hold them back, but rather using generations of discrimination against them to spur on a new kind of micro-revolution. Today’s women are fighting back against inequality, and will not just sit down and take what they are handed as the corporations have come to expect. 170 female employees at the BBC have demanded action at the wake of the pay gap scandal, pitching to a parliamentary committee earlier this month. Former China editor Carrie Gracie resigned over the dispute.

As Emma Watson said in the midst of the HeforShe campaign: “The reality is that if we do nothing, it will take 75 years, or for me to be nearly a hundred, before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same work.”

Gender inequality is reflected in many places, not just in a woman’s bank account. Whether it’s being told that as a woman you can’t wear certain clothes at school – lest it distract the boys – or having your knowledge of technology, maths and science questioned because that’s ‘not what girls are good at’ – misogyny is deeply rooted in our culture.

But there is worry that when the clock strikes midnight on the 1st January 2000, computers will all reset themselves due to a bug on the calendar database; this was nicknamed the “Millennium bug”. Luckily this didn’t happen and the 2000’s is a decade that we will never forget.

This is presented by the iconic duo Ant and Dec, who have changed British TV in the noughties, especially on Saturday nights with their brilliant family show “Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.” And last but not least, The X Factor also deserves an honourable mention, catapulting the likes of One Direction and Olly Murs into the spotlight.

For myself, I feel this decade brought us a new generation of outstanding films using the newest technology. Computergenerated imagery was used in a number of films. An example of this would be the Russell Crowe hit “Gladiators” which was released in 2001 and won the Academy Award in 2000 for Best Motion Picture.

Listening to music now has become extremely portable, with the invention of iPod and smartphones. It is now possible to be able to listen to your favourite music on the go, instead of carrying around stereos and Walkmans. Smartphones have also given us a way of being able to speak to anyone we want, whenever we want. The only issue with this is there is no escape from your work, or family and friends, contacting you when you want to have some time to yourself. We can message each other and even see each other face to face using Skype, FaceTime or Messenger.

We can also get on the internet whenever we want, on our smartphones.

This led to the success in television programmes as TV boxsets took over the small screen. “Binge watching” is a new term which has taken hold of the world with the invention of platforms such as Netflix. It is now possible to watch television dramas in one go rather than wait over a week for the next episode. The 2000s saw the release of hit shows including Breaking Bad, The Wire and The Office. Reality television also became very big, which from different viewpoints could be seen as a positive or a negative. The Only Way is Essex, Georgie Shore and other shows following the same pattern came out. Also, the hit reality show “I’m a Celebrity Get Me out Of Here”

The 2000’s have had downfalls, but we have grown as individuals over those ten years. Our lives have changed during this time with new inventions, and exciting new opportunities. This was the decade we grew up in and we have fond memories of. I will always think of the 2000’s as the happiest time of my life.

Black Panther Album Review Disney and Ryan Coogler awarded Kendrick Lamar and the Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) family with the mammoth task of producing the sound track for Marvel’s blockbuster movie Black Panther.

The Black Panther character is the MCU’s first black character to get a solo film.

As you can imagine, Kendrick must have been under immense pressure. Kendrick put together a kick-ass roster of artists, producers, and visual directors. The artists on this album include the well-known Khalid, Sway Lee, Future, 2 Chainz, Travis Scott, Anderson Paak, and James Blake.

Kendrick also included TDE staples like Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and SZA. The album also features hot new artists like Jorja Smith, North Vallejo rap group SOB X RBE, and Zacari. Africa is alive and well as the album is filled with artists from various African countries. Saudi traded verses with Schooboy Q on X, South African rapper Yugen Blakrok stole the show on Opps, Sjava is ever so soulful on Seasons, and Babes Wodumo gets us dancing on Redemption.

The opening track Black Panther is where King Kendrick draws similarities between himself and the title character of the film “King T’ Challa”. Kendrick highlights the difficulties of being a polarizing leader and compares them to the leadership responsibilities that T’ Challa has as king of Wakanda “King of my enemies, may they father feed, I rejoice / King of the skyscrapers, dodgin’ haters, broke religion”. Kendrick then also teamed up

with Jay Rock and Future on King’s Dead where he channelled the aggressiveness of T’Challa’s nemesis Killmonger. Killmonger cites similar responsibilities to T’Challa “Not your baby, not your equal/ Not the title y’all want me under/ All hail King Killmonger”.

When the album isn’t focusing on chart toppers like The Ways, All The Stars, and Pray For Me but more on the undercard features is when it really shines. Paramedic!

Is easily one of the standout tracks of the album. In Paramedic! Kendrick paves the way for the young Vallejo rap collective SOB X RBE and they did not disappoint.

The unique selling point of the entire album is the combination of black American culture and African culture.

Babes Wodumo gets you moving with her tribal calls on Redemption, Sjava serenades you throughout his verses on Seasons. However, Yugen Blarkrok may be one of the best entries on the album as he spit some seriously sharp bars “Spit slick, attack is subliminal/Flowers on my mind, but the rhyme style sinister/Stand behind my own bars, like a seasoned criminal/ Gotham City Streets, I’ll play the (Riddler)/ Crushing any system that belittles us”.

The entire album mirrors the films vision of showcasing black excellence. Kendrick truly did bring hip-hop to Wakanda.

I Never Said English indie pop band Pale Waves originating from Manchester are made up of drummer Ciara Doran, lead singer/ guitarist Heather Baron-Gracie, guitarist Hugo Silvani and bassist Charlie Wood.

The band have been growing their following since they released their song Television Romance released in 2017 and reaching the Scottish Singles Chart 2017.

They are now getting ready to release their brand new EP All The Things I Never Said on 16th March 2018.

The band’s style is very similar to that of The 1975 or other rising band The Hunna with their electric symphonies and dreamy singing style accompanied by wonderful drum beats. The new EP features four new songs including New Year’s Eve, The Tide, My Obsession and Heavenly.

New Year’s Eve has a real nostalgic quality to it as well as being super relatable to most of us with the main chorus chiming “I don’t wanna be alone on New Year’s Eve”.

By Emma Reynolds This song is very upbeat and you can’t help finding yourself dancing to it.

The Tide follows that similar upbeat style with an addictive electric guitar in the background. The song is very youthful in its subject talking about admiring someone from afar with the relatable lyrics “lose me like the ocean”. The band is still very fresh and especially since they were brought together through their time at The University Of Manchester.

My Obsession is one of the slower songs that the Pale Waves have released on their EP and it’s very beautiful in its serene yet alternative manner.

Finally the song Heavenly almost has an 80s electro-vibe about it almost sounding like the electric guitar is a synth keyboard!

The song is one of the best on the EP being an amazing dance tune and one that you won’t be able to stop listening to!

The band will be playing at Reading Festival this year and I’m sure we’ll see them at much more!

Bournemouth locals The Magic Gang stormed their homecoming gig at TOFS with help from support acts San. Marlo and Leeches. Put on by We Broke Free as part of Independent venues week the gig was the first time The Magic Gang played tracks from their self-titled debut album.

Leeches kicked off their set with ‘I Watch TV’ a track with hints of Weezer and Nirvana throughout, the band’s heavy riffs in ‘Flowers in the Garden’, ‘Inside voices’ and the more chilled most recent single ‘Bob Ross’ set the mood of mosh pits for the night.

San. Marlo were next on, the Bournemouth based melodic grunge four piece added a lighter touch with their opening tracks ‘Changing’ and ‘Know Her Name’, after a quick thanks to the crowd, the band finished their set with their latest single ‘Honey’ followed by Veins and Dreaming.

The next hour belonged to The Magic Gang.

Kicking off with ‘Oh, Saki’, the first of five new tracks debuted; the crowd hadn’t seemed to lose any of their energy. ‘All this way’ and ‘Only waiting’ were next from the boys, two tracks from their second EP that have made it onto their new album.

‘Getting Along’ and ‘Slippin’ were the next two off the new album to make it into the set, after a quick interlude as the band tell the crowd their appreciation of making their homecoming gig such an experience they played fan favourite ‘Jasmine’, before ‘Feeling Better’, ‘Caroline’, ‘I’ll Show You’ and ‘Your Love’, the latter three being new album tracks.

The latest single ‘How Can I Compete’ came next to a massive reaction before ‘All I want is You’ and an encore consisting of ‘No Fun’. The band again thanked the crowd for an amazing gig, saying how nice it was to come back to their hometown before calling it a night.

Review - The Sherlocks @ The Old Fire Station 6.2.18 Sheffield indie rockers The Sherlocks entertained a lively Old Firestation crowd on Tuesday night (6.2.18), playing the entirety of their 2017 debut album ‘Live For The Moment’.

The band were involved in a minor social media controversy prior to the show when twitter users noticed they had altered YNOT Festival’s line-up poster to put themselves further up the bill before tweeting the image out themselves. However, this didn’t seem to impact on what was an enjoyable fourty minute performance. Stand out singles ‘Will You Be There’ and ‘Live For The Moment’ were undoubtedly the highlights of the set, just as they were on the album, with the riffy rock of the title track receiving the best response of the night from the eclectic mixture of fans in the crowd.

Acoustic tracks ‘Turn the Clock’ and ‘Motions’ brought a welcome change of pace mid-set, with the latter’s barnburning, chugging guitar sparking a wave of swaying arms at the front of the crowd.

For album finisher ‘Candlelight’, the band continued their tradition on their current

tour of asking the crowd to put their phone lights and lighters in the air in unison, resulting in a striking visual spectacle in a venue the size of TOFS. The lighting and stage design was one of the most impressive parts of the set, with strobes, spotlights and smoke machines giving each song a distinct atmosphere.

This was the Sherlocks’ first headline gig in Bournemouth, and the band rounded off the set with fan-favourite ‘Chasing Shadows’. The track was noticeably more bass and drum driven live, adding a driving force behind the jangly indie guitar which dominates the song on the album and leaving the crowd with a compelling tune to end the night.

Next up for the The Sherlocks is a short trip down the coast to play a sold out show at Portsmouth’s Wedgewood Rooms tonight (7.2.18) before continuing their UK tour in Camden on Friday.

Dappy - back in Bournemouth The former N-Dubz star returned to Bournemouth last night selling out the Old Fire Station, six years on from his previous visit.

The hip-hop trio N-Dubz split up in 2011 to go their separate ways. Dappy went on to release his own album called “Bad Intentions” in 2012 and since then has featured on other artists’ tracks and released various singles, the latest entitled “Trill”.

Dappy has made a massive comeback with his “Levels” tour since his court appearance last year when he was convicted for brandishing a knife outside of his home.

The rapper was sentenced to a nine-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

There were multiple support acts before Dappy including one of the winners’ of his Levels Tour competition who was selected to open Bournemouth’s show.

Despite a few technical difficulties it wasn’t long before Dappy took to the stage to show off his talent. He has a brilliant stage

presence, constantly moving from left to right so everyone is able to see him during his fast paced and energetic set.

Looking for a student house?

Urging people to get out their phones and get onto each others shoulders, the rapper was constantly interacting with all of his fans and telling the crowd how he loves them like relatives. The rapper sang old songs from N-Dubz as well as his recent hits creating a feeling of nostalgia throughout the venue and bringing old and new fans together.

Even though he seemed to say “ay” more than he sang, the rappers’ voice was clear and sounded like it was bouncing off of the walls. That mixed with the colourful flashing lights, he created an all round unforgettable experience for his audience.

Dappy is currently working on his new album which will be out very soon.

Review Arche Age is an MMORPG and is probably one of my favorite games of all time. The story of the game takes place in medieval ages in a fantasy world.

The game has many amazing aspects, but I’ll be able to mention only the ones I feel like make Arche Age the great game it is. You have a huge variety of classes to choose from, you can choose from more than 120 different classes to find the one that fits your play style best.

What separates it from the other MMOs out there is the fact that Arche Age has a vast ocean you can sail with a battle ship, go scuba diving for sunken treasure, go fishing with your friends or something totally casual, like fighting the Kraken‌.

Yes, there is a huge Kraken much like the one in Pirates of the Caribbean.

You can travel in the game by land, sea or air and jumping from the highest mountain in the game just to spread your glider and roam through the skies was insane fun for me.

The thing I loved the most about the game is the freedom it gives you, Arche Age is a sandbox, which means you can do whatever your heart desires, you want to be a pirate plundering the seas and killing other players? Do it! You want to be a peaceful fisherman? Go ahead! You want to build a castle and fight other nations?

Raise your flags! You want to hunt giant monsters and capture them in order to sell them? Brace yourself.

And last but not least, the game feels alive.

The economy is player driven, which gives the world an amazing feeling.

The economy is driven by players as people make packs of goods and take them to really far lands, which is high risk high reward, because other people can attack you and steal your goods. The game is thrilling and for me, it is one of the best MMORPGs in existence.

I, TONYA

darkest hour

downsizing

Winston Churchill is Britain’s most notorious prime minster, yet its little known that for the most part, no one really wanted him. Darkest Hour tells the underdog story of Churchill as he battles his own party in order to ensure Britain fights for their future as a free and independent country.

This film tells the story of Paul, a man who goes through the irreversible procedure known as Downsizing, in order to live a better life for him and his wife. However, things don’t go to plan and we find ourselves on an Alexander Payne adventure.

The film has an exclusive focus on its main story that it forgets to develop upon its many side story’s, such as that of why Halifax turned down the position of prime minster, only to bitch and moan at every word Churchill says. This being said, this quintessentially British film is utterly captivating, thanks in large part to its against-all-odds story and mesmerising central performance from Gary Oldman.

Overall, Darkest Hour makes for a very compelling Dunkirk companion piece.

With stakes as high as you can get and a phenomenal lead performance, Darkest Hour is a splendid look into a moment of history and a celebration of all that is British. For fans of Gary Oldman, Historical British period pieces and WW2 dramas.

Robbie nails both the tough bitch and sensitive girl in Tonya, portraying this controversial icon as humanly as possible.

Allison Janney is stunning as LaVona Golden. Hilariously vulgar and horrid, yet also showing a caring side deep down inside her. The performances are as ballsy as the film itself and it becomes one of the driving forces of the film.

Downsizing is a surprisingly bad film, spending its runtime, randomly stumbling through a multitude of political meanings.

It’s the cinematic equivalent of a indecisive toddler playing with their toy box.

The problem lies with the film’s lack of focus, thus resulting in a film that half does a number of things, rather than fully realise the potential of one or two of its key themes.

Overall, the cast is great and the humour hits occasionally, but Downsizing is plagued with a randomly structured story that chops and changes between its plot points far too drastically. It’s also worth noting that Hong Chau’s dialogue verges on being racist, so there’s a red flag there.

In amongst the MeToo movement and Oscar buzz, one film stands out for the sheer size of its balls. That film is I, Tonya.

A Dramedy about the controversial champion figure skater, Tonya Harding, and her dysfunctional and very abusive family. The film is one hell of a risky move, a domestic abuse comedy released during Hollywood’s clamp down on sexual misconduct, but this controversial move pays off, as the resulting film is thoroughly entertaining and great fun.

The film is essentially 2 different films, the left and right testicle if I am to continue the ‘balls’ theme, and I will.

The second half of the film is a farcical crime comedy. This is what the film has built to, as Tonya Harding has become as synonymous with the “incident” as she is with Ice Skating. This half picks up narratively, whereas the first half was perhaps more set up and character driven, mainly through performance and punchlines. However, both parts are equally as captivating and the change in genre makes I, Tonya a much more entertaining biopic.

Overall, I, Tonya had a set a balls on it that you can’t help but admire and appreciate.

Craig Gillespie is perhaps one of the most respectable filmmakers to his subject matter, making an abuse comedy that isn’t in bad taste, and whose quality is accentuated by its incredibly strong cast and entertaining story.

The Oscars may not have gone for it, but I, Tonya certainly shows up the nominated films in other areas. For fans of foul mouth comedy drama’s featuring a strong lead, such as; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and Burn After Reading.

The first half is a skating family drama, setting up our narrative and characters, who are beautifully brought to life by the films fantastic cast. Margo Robbie plays wonderfully against type as Tonya Harding, an abused outsider from a broken home, gifted with figure skating.

Despite being home to all things glitz, glamour and of course Hollywood, surprisingly, in the fashion stakes, LA has always lived in the shadows of its East Coast cousin, New York. Well, that is until now.

Decades of incubating some of America’s most promising labels including Armature, Bree Layne and Apolis (to name just a few) has finally paid a dividend and helped establish LA as a force to be reckoned with.

No more finishing silver for this The Golden State. In contrary to New York’s prim and proper style, LA’s edgier fashion scene will be a welcomed counter point.

Characterised by being colourful, energetic and diverse, it should be no surprise that Brazil is home to an emerging fashion capital, Sao Paulo. However, with a government constantly wrought with instability, Brazilian designers have for decades been seeking ways to creatively channel ethics and political issues into their work. As a result of this, native designers like Carlos Mile, Francisco Costa, Ricardo Almeida and Gloria Coelho are some of the most thought-provoking and conscious designers in the world right now.

Renowned for some of the most eyecatching and unusual designs in the world, when it comes to eccentricity, very few do it better and more bizarre than Tokyo.

Responsible for nurturing the talents of Issey Miyake, Junya Watanabe and Yohji Yamamoto, this city has had a rich history of inspiring some of fashion’s greatest visionaries. In Tokyo, fashion isn’t about peacocking wealth or labels, it’s about complete and utter creative freedom, and breaking away from the shackles of the ordinary. After all, gender-neutral dressing, crop tops and mini backpacks were all birthed on the streets of Tokyo.

hONORABLE MENTION Already Africa’s economic and entertainment juggernaut, it just seemed inevitable that Nigeria would capture the fashion title as well. Damaged Hair is one shampoo that I personally found amazing for my damaged hair considering I have tried almost every cheaper brand out there which never worked. £7.50 for a 250ml bottle is not cheap, but not overly expensive either… and it actually helps.

But can you change that without getting rid of your hair or paying loads in a salon? Definitely.

There will be money involved indeed, but not as much as you would pay for one time at a hairdresser. It takes a bit of patience and results are not instant, but the journey and the end results are well worth it.

Her wardrobe is general ‘street style’ with some class thrown in. She has her #OOTD pictures taken in some pretty cool places around the city too.

Let’s not forget about the men! Joey is a lifestyle blogger based in the UK. Starting at a relatively young age, he made his blog about fashion, travel and health.

He claims that through making a YouTube channel his blog grew and became an instant success – just like his Instagram. He also models and does collaborations with many brands – even more reason to give him a follow.

His style is smart-casual.

Amanda is a 20-year-old blogger from Switzerland, living in the US. Having not started for long, she’s already managed to capture 293k on Instagram posting about lifestyle and beauty.

If you don’t follow for her stunning gothic style alone, she also posts bold makeup looks too. She is different from the traditional fashion blogger, but is still a must follow for her quirky finds.

Trim your split ends to allow your hair to breathe and receive the new help. In theory, products will work relatively fine on split ends as well, but you might find yourself disappointed when investing time, effort and money and seeing less to no pay off than you would if you had a healthier hair.

Plus, the more the split ends are left untouched and uncut, the more the hair will split further towards the scalp giving your hair that frizzy and dry look.

2. Coconut oil

Every week or two, week apply coconut oil onto your hair and leave it on overnight. The hair has to be fully covered in coconut oil, including the roots. Gently massage the scalp, tie in a bun, and rinse in the morning. Make sure you wash the hair with both shampoo and conditioner.

Only buy organic coconut oil.

3. Shampoo

Choose a repairing shampoo! Brands such as L’Oreal or Pantene are good in terms of washing the hair but not necessarily in doing what they promise to do on the bottle. Toni & Guy Cleanse

Conditioner should be added to the washing up routine as it moisturises, detangles, reconstructs and offers shine to the hair. Leave it in for 10-15 minutes. Toni & Guy to the rescue again – both of their Nourish Reconstruction and Smooth Definition are way better in terms of long term effects than other brands such as the ones mentioned above. There is nothing particularly wrong with cheap conditioners – it is just the fact that if you look at long term effects, they are doing close to nothing.

5. Everyday care products

Apply 2-3 pumps of hair repairing oil the wet hair after washing up and 1-2 pumps on the dry hair after styling or drying. Also, always use heat protecting mist if you find yourself drying or styling hair with devices that produce heat!

6. Frequency

Believe it or not, the frequency of washing your hair should only be 2 to 3 times a week. My dermatologist advised me so when my hair was extremely dry and falling out a lot. She said that washing the hair too often reduces the natural oils our hair produces, therefore encouraging dryness and dullness. Try sticking this routine for a month and trust me, your hair will start to improve and get less greasy between the washes.

#Oprah2020

To a sea of applause and standing ovations, Oprah Winfrey delivered the final few lines of an impassioned and heartfelt speech at the Golden Globe. During her acceptance of the Cecil b Demille Award, Oprah touched upon the power of seeing as a child Sidney Poitier become the first African-American to win an Oscar; the injustice once experienced by activist Recy Taylor as she watched the six White men who raped and abused her avoid conviction; and finally, she proclaimed a new dawn of equality and female empowerment. In short, Oprah spoke like a president. Post-speech, the outpouring of love wasn’t just confined to the Beverly Hill hotel, it reverberated across the world as newspapers scrambled to weigh up the merits of an Oprah election bid, and Twitter blew up with the hashtag #Oprah2020.

“...So, I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!

And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”

Would you vote for Oprah? Should America vote for Oprah Winfrey in 2020? With a glittering career spanning decades as well mediums: radio, talk shows, films and even books, Oprah has catapulted herself from humble beginnings to billionaires and global brand status, with name recognition comparable with likes of Subway, Nike and Microsoft. Honestly, just think about it… who hasn’t heard of Oprah? Considering her career has been built upon female empowerment, providing a voice to the voiceless and philanthropy – her girl’s school in South Africa being a testament to that, while most celebrities divide opinion, Oprah has always been one of the few who across demographic lines is equally admired as well as adored. Not only has Oprah embodied the American Dream; the rags to riches story, her compassion and determination have won her a place in America’s heart. But, is being a crowd favourite enough to justify Oprah a successful presidential bid?

Without a single ounce of experience in public office or even a history of engaging with politics, the chances of Oprah reaching the White House may seem extremely unlikely. However, didn’t we once say that about Donald Trump? True, in the 2016 election the promise of change rang louder and truer than the need for experience. After all, Hilary Clinton was the most experienced presidential candidate in history. Yet, where did all that leave her? A loser, and with the spurned opportunity of becoming America’s first female president, ever. While it is unclear what Oprah’s stances are on subjects such as foreign policy, the economy and North Korea, it is safe to assume that she’d have a liberal approach. And considering she’s the diametric opposite of Trump, she’ll likely bring about that converted change also.

Could America seriously be considering electing another celebrity billionaire as president? Is all that is required for the highest office, fame and money?

A crescendo of talk over Oprah being president is a sign that America is going through a crisis of identity and confidence.

Not only does it show lack of faith in Trump, fundamentally it exposes the weaknesses in the Democratic Party when a political outside can generate more passion from the public than their own.

American politics is in turmoil. And yes, Donald Trump has only added to the mountain of questions. However, Oprah is not the answer. As great and inspiring as she is as a role model and businesswoman, her appointment will only add further unpredictability to the current maelstrom of US politics. While Oprah can speak like a president, the American people demand a lot more than just rhetoric. Want a more qualified candidate that is both Black and Female? Try Kamala Harris.

The tainting of celebrity

By Silva Chege In the mid 40s to early 60s it was pretty much a certainty that when the word celebrity popped up into your head, instantly your mind went down a tangent involving the extremely talented Hollywood stars of American Cinemas golden period. Waltzing into your psyche would have been the glamorous likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman. Marching into your consciousness were the imposing likes of Spencer Tracey, Gregory Peck and Cary Grant. Along with these names you would also add the splendour of film premiers, red carpets, movie posters and glamorous homes in Monte Carlo.

However, if you were to mention the same term to people today, instantly images of drunken romps in Love Island, immature pranksters on YouTube and unfortunate tales of child actors slowly destroying their lives, would boil to the surface. Now the perception of celebrity has been regulated to the realms of cheapness, stupid rants on Twitter and crotch shots.

My recent celebrity epiphany came as a result of watching two Sofia Coppola films, that I felt greatly summed up celebrity and its effects in the 21st century. The first was a brilliant character study on the numbing effects of modern day celebrity called Somewhere, and how it can turn you into

cattle that allows you to be bought and sold. The second film was The Bling Ring, based on a true story that follows a group of already spoiled brats, who decide to rob the homes of celebrities to quench their hunger for glamour and excess. Oh and of course, they’re shot at 15 minutes of fame.

Ultimately, this desire for fame for fame’s sake, has become a theme heavily ingrained in modern society. Why spend years studying acting with Stella Adler when all you really need now is a sex tape? Why spend years couch surfing and honing your talents at small gigs, when you can simply sing a few Brittney songs on the X-factor, and win yourself a £1 million recording contract?

The reason I’m appalled at the tainting of Celebrity is because I feel fame should be something born from years of hard work, dedication, sacrifice and a love for your given art. Then when you propel yourself to the very top of your profession, you are duly rewarded with adulation, acclaim and wealth. Celebrity shouldn’t be something you wake up one random morning and decide to be or get thrust into after a one-night stand with a famous face. Fame should be something you earn and not something you can pick-up in the buyone-get-one-free aisle at the supermarket.

Why I switched to

After years of leaks, cramps, landfill guilt and ridiculous amount of money spent on sanitary products, I decided to give the menstrual cup a try.

(and why you should do the same)

There are so many benefits of using menstrual cup. I’ve listed the ones that made me make the switch and which will show you why you should, too:

THE menstrual cup

One menstrual cup will last you forever Okay, not exactly forever. According to Diva cup’s website you should replace your cup every year but other eco sites claim that with a proper care one cup could last up to ten years. Either way it’s a long time without buying any sanitary products!

Menstrual cups don’t contain chemicals All brands of cups are made with medical grade silicon, which is free of the noxious chemicals tampons and pads contain. This means that unlike tampons, the blood cannot harbour the toxins that cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Since the cup doesn’t absorb anything, women commonly report feeling less dryness.

One word - leakage

Every month, billions of women and girls over the world endure between three to seven days of menstruation – and if you belong to this part of the population then you definitely know how many pairs of underwear, vacations and plans have been ruined because of it.

For years, women have used either tampons or pads to collect blood and protect clothing during their periods. The menstrual cup provides women with an alternative to those traditional methods.

Is there anything worse than waking up in the morning to find out that you bled all over your favourite bedsheets? The menstrual cup creates a seal, preventing leakage that inevitably occurs with tampon or pad use.

Because of the suction of the cup’s rim, it provides unparalleled protection against blood clots from slipping out of the vagina.

Tampons offer just eight hours before TSS becomes a possibility. With menstrual cups, you can go up to 12 hours in between emptying the cup – almost a whole day without constantly thinking about your period!

Save money and the environment A study that polled 2,134 women aged 18-45 who currently have regular periods revealed that women spend more than £18,000 on having periods in their lifetime.

As the cup is reusable and you can be used for years, you won’t have to buy any tampons and pads. This is not only better for the environment but for your wallet as well. I call that a win-win!

Less cramps There isn’t scientific evidence that using menstrual cup means less cramps but a commonly reported side effect of switching to a menstrual cup is less cramps and even a lighter period.

They really aren’t that scary Cups are just as comfortable as tampons.

You’ll have to spend some time learning how to get the cup in and out, but once you master it you’ll never think of going back to tampons. You can maintain cups in a public restroom, but you probably won’t have to because you can keep it in for so long. But if you really have to you can safely empty your cup into the toilet, wipe it out and pop it back in for another dozen hours.

DEBATES “He’s only pushing you around the playground and pulling your pony tail because he likes you! Don’t worry, it’s normal” said a parent to their teary-eyed and confused daughter.

The aforementioned ‘boy bullies’ girl because he likes her’ scenario takes place every day in schools all over the planet.

I believe that parents and guardians who use the idea of love as a tool of consolation when their daughter is getting bullied by a boy or as a justification when their son is the one doing the bullying are adding to an already harmful narrative. The narrative is ‘men are violent as a means to show love’, which is absolutely ridiculous. Now, because we’ve been raised with that narrative in mind, it’s no wonder there are countless listicles all over the internet with headlines like ‘Hottest Felons’.

Jeremy Meeks, the infamous “Prison Bae” went viral in 2014 when people obsessed over his mugshot and he’s now a professional model after obtaining a modelling contract, he’s also supposedly been signed to a film agent as an actor.

Bear in mind, Meeks was part of a faction of the Crips, a California gang and he went to jail for physically assaulting a 16-yearold boy. Now if you ask me, a man like this does not deserve this sort of recognition after what he’s done.

WE NEED TO STOP

SEXUALISING VIOLENCE 49

Maybe the reason we sexualize violent men is because of some primal instinct deep down that violent men are more likely to protect us in a situation of conflict. This is where hyper-masculinity comes into play.

I’ve always believed hyper-masculinization has done more bad than good. Men are sometimes too short-sighted when their masculinity comes under question, so to prove they are “real men” they do stupid

and sometimes violent things. The thing is, it’s 2018, we’re well out of the era where men are the ones who solve all disputes using the medium of violence.

Society doesn’t just fetishize or sexualize violent men, its sexualizes violence as a whole. A quick google search of advertisements will pull up hundreds of advertisements displaying a group of men are seeing dominating a lone woman. TV and movies are big culprits of peddling the sexualisation of violent men, I’m going to briefly talk about an episode in the TV show Louie that resonated with me. Yes, I know about the Louis C.K. allegations but separating art from the artist is another debate altogether.

Anyway, in an episode of Louie, title character Louie is out on a date with a beautiful woman at an ice cream place. A group of adolescent teens enter as start creating a ruckus and they start picking on Louie after he tells them to get out.

The teens challenge Louie to a fight, but he makes it clear he’s not going to engage because he has two young kids to care for.

The teens ridicule him and leave, but the problem is, so does his date. Louie’s date said she was no longer attracted to him because he wasn’t ready to get violent, despite knowing that he had two kids.

This adds to the harmful narrative that men aren’t real men unless they’re violent to a certain degree. This is particularly detrimental because again it paints violence as the sole answer to conflict, which is just wrong. We need to stop the sexualisation of violence because we need young boys to look up to role models who use brains over brawn.

AFC BOURNEMOUTH

A change in

fortunes

When Bournemouth first played Huddersfield back in November the Cherries’ emphatic 4-0 victory pulled them away from the relegation places and left them in 13th place with the Terriers sitting pretty in 10th.

Four months later the teams will meet again, however this time Huddersfield are the ones in desperate need of a win and Bournemouth are looking upwards, with their eyes set on bettering last season’s record 9th place finish.

Callum Wilson’s eagerly anticipated return to fitness has helped Bournemouth arguably more than anyone could ever have expected with the English striker scoring five in 12 and putting himself firmly in the running for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad. However, the striker’s red-hot return is not the only thing that has helped Eddie Howe’s side catapult themselves up the table.

Howe’s recent adoption of a back three has eased Bournemouth’s defensive troubles, shown best by the way they limited Arsenal to one goal and shut out Chelsea in their last few games. This has shored up their defence and also allowed their creative players more freedom on the attack as more options are created all over the pitch.

again during his tenure as Bournemouth boss that although he will stick to his principles he is not afraid to change the shape to get the best out of certain players.

Ryan Fraser’s recent upturn in form while playing wing-back is a testament to both the strength of this formation and Howe’s man-management skills.

Despite the recent improvement from Bournemouth on the pitch it would be foolish to overlook the importance of the drop-offs in form of those around them.

Significant downturns in form from teams such as Southampton, Huddersfield and Newcastle will have surely given Howe’s men hope that with their form going in the opposite direction they can at the very least pull away from the relegation dogfight at the bottom of the division.

Bournemouth have done tremendously well to put their lethargic start to the campaign behind them, and with the season entering its final stretch they will hope they have what it takes to keep their run going. Eddie Howe worked towards this end in the January transfer window by streamlining his squad, allowing Benik Afobe to return to Wolves but also loaning out various young prospects.

SPORT Despite the title race already over so soon into the season, the battle for a top 4 spot is beginning to heat up.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea all currently lead the way with 12 games left, but both Arsenal and Tottenham aren’t too far behind.

Jose Mourinho’s side fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Wembley Stadium, but hold the best defensive record in the league and are deservedly the ‘best of the rest’. The signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal is sure to drastically strengthen the attacking options at Old Trafford, just in time for one of the busiest periods of any club’s season.

But while the Gunners may have lost one of their best players, they have used the January transfer window superbly. The signings of Henrikh Mkhitaryan (part of the Sanchez swap deal) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang provided an entirely different dimension to Arsenal’s front-line, and perhaps shows that Wenger is no longer afraid to splash the cash as his tenure at the Emirates comes to an end.

Chelsea look the most likely team to drop into a Europa League place, as Antonio Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge looks set to come to an end at any point.

Goal scoring problems have placed too much pressure on Belgian winger Eden Hazard to create something from nothing, and the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko hasn’t improved Chelsea’s midfield in the way that many expected. The futures of Gary Cahill and David Luiz seem set away from London, although it’s looking increasingly unlikely that is will be Conte who decides what happens to them.

Currently occupying the Europa League places are Tottenham and Arsenal. Mauricio Pochettino’s side, led by Harry Kane and Dele Alli, sit only one point behind Chelsea and are primed to capitalise on any slip-up from Conte’s men.

Although Arsenal currently sit five points off fourth, the Gunners may be able to steal a Champions League place providing their new additions are firing on all cylinders.

Another side that lost one of their better players is Liverpool, after Phillipe Coutinho’s switch to Spanish giants Barcelona. But the Reds seem to have continued where they left off, scoring plenty of goals. The transfer of Mo Salah to Anfield may have been questioned by many at the start of the season after the Egyptian’s mixed spell at Chelsea, but he is proving his doubters wrong every week.

A winding, Messi-esque finish against Tottenham showed Salah’s seemingly endless skill and confidence, although his team mates at the back may yet jeopardise Liverpool’s spot in the Champions League next year.

Britain boasts a creditable 6 world champions, with ‘AJ’ holding 2 of the 4 recognised world title belts, whilst vying the WBO strap when he faces New Zealander Joseph Parker on March 31st.

But, there are several boxers closer to home looking to emulate the successes of current British world champions and in Bournemouth, three fighters are making a name for themselves as they aim to build up their profile, by claiming some titles of their own.

Here is a look at the careers of the three boxers in question, with two of them with titles fights just around the corner:

Middleweight prospect, ‘Leggy’ will also be hoping to bring home the Southern Area belt, when he takes on Tey Lynn Jones for the title, just six days after his stablemate, Hayes.

Leggy will fight for the middleweight version of the strap and similarly to Hayes, will be aiming for a different result after suffering defeat to Danny Butler for the belt in October.

But, home support could be the key in this one with Leggy headlining the ‘Time to Shine’ show at the o2 academy in Bournemouth on March 9th.

Victory for Hayes and Leggy could elevate them to future bouts at English and British level.

Chris Billam Smith

The oldest and most experienced professional boxer residing in Bournemouth, Joe is looking to claim the Southern Area welterweight title at the Camden Centre in Kings Cross, London on March 3rd.

Chris Billam Smith (4-0-0) is the new kid on the block but has already shared a ring with fighters people only dream of taking on.

The pair were scheduled to face off in December, but a slight injury means the bout will go ahead this month.

The 34-year-old (7-1-1) has already had one shot at winning the Southern Area belt, losing on points to Mario Petrov last April, but Hayes can make amends when he faces Louis Greene (8-0)

British Boxing is in a fantastic place. The sport is running on a crest of a wave, arguably due to the rapid success of world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who has drawn in a completely new audience and freshened up the heavyweight scene.

Matty Legg

The unbeaten cruiserweight novice has sparred with the likes of former world champion David Haye as well as current world champion George Groves.

‘CBS’ has come on leaps and bounds since joining up with trainer Shane McGuigan and will return to Bournemouth on the undercard of Leggy’s bout on March 9th.

Eddie Howe exclusive interview Spending went through the roof during this year’s January transfer window in the Premier League, with record figures being splashed out by England’s top clubs. In total, they spent 77 percent more than last season. Arsenal legend Ian Wright described the money as ‘vulgar’, saying that prices don’t even matter anymore because clubs have such huge budgets.

“It’s very easy just to join the bandwagon of opinions depending on where you sit, so if you haven’t spent a lot you can call it vulgar, whereas if you’ve spent loads then you can justify it yourself.

AFC Bournemouth were the only Premier League club not to spend any money in the January transfer window. I caught up with the Cherries boss Eddie Howe to find out his thoughts on the ever-growing market.

I would like to work with the best squad that I can, and if that meant recruiting with the resources that we have I would do that, but that wasn’t where we were this market.

We spent a bit of money in the Summer, so we were quite prepared to just work with what we’ve got until now and until the end of the season.”

Everyone’s talking about Bournemouth’s lack of spending, but having beaten Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool - to name a few of the most impressive results – that’s the beauty of the Premier League, isn’t it?

“Yeah, it is. If the league table was ranked on how much you’ve spent I think everyone would be spending millions and millions, but it’s not and you’ve got to be savvy with your squad and how you work every day.

That’s the beauty of this job; your day-today dealings with the players and how you get your team to play, not necessarily how much you spend in the market.”

“We spent a bit of money in the Summer, so we were quite prepared to just work with what we’ve got”. Do you see the transfer figures spent in January as vulgar?

Every manager and every club will do what they feel they need to do for their team, and I’ve got no problem with that.

Many disagreed with Howe’s philosophy prior to the opening of the January transfer window, but with The Cherries flying high in the Premier League, equipped with a promising young squad to boot, it’s hard to argue with his principles now.

Whilst other clubs are getting carried away, willingly parting with millions of pounds for one player, Howe and AFC Bournemouth should be praised for keeping their feet on the ground and working with what they’ve got.

Recent results have proved critics and fans wrong yet again, but don’t be surprised to see more transfer activity on the south coast in the Summer.
