et’s just start again from the beginning … With the PSALM festival we always look at the big issues in life. With music, joy, passion and good humour, of course, but seriously too. And certainly one of the biggest issues at the moment is how we intend to live with each other on this little planet in the future. It is all too obvious that our present way of life has us plundering the earth’s resources indiscriminately, destroying the environment and causing climate warming. Music and the arts have a lot to say about this, of course. And it was programmes on this topic that we wanted to play for you at Easter 2020 under the title “for future!”. We all know what happened next. The Corona virus put our lives on hold. In the hope of things improving in the new year, we have looked at all our cancelled projects again, in particular PSALM, and realised that all the issues of nearly a year ago appear to be not only still relevant but even more urgent than before. Which is why we are quite simply starting over and presenting PSALM ”for future!” once again. But as with all new starts, there will be changes: the programmes and projects have grown and matured in the meantime. And with any luck, they will point the way to a better future, in PSALM 2021 “… for future!”.

angen wir einfach noch einmal von vorne an … Im Festival PSALM geht es uns immer darum, die großen Fragen des Lebens zu verhandeln. Natürlich mit Musik, natürlich mit großer Freude, mit Leidenschaft und guter Laune, aber eben doch auch ernst. Und es gibt sicher kaum eine größere Frage zurzeit, als die, wie wir miteinander in Zukunft leben wollen auf unserem kleinen Planeten. Ausgehend von einer Gegenwart, in der sich mit Händen greifen lässt, dass das menschliche Wirtschaften rücksichtslos Ressourcen plündert, die Umwelt zerstört und das Klima aufheizt. Natürlich hat die Kunst, hat die Musik viel dazu zu sagen. Und genau solche Programme wollten wir zu Ostern 2020 für Sie spielen, unter einem Titel, der programmatisch war: „for future!“. Wir wissen, was dann passierte. Das Coronavirus zwang uns alle zum Innehalten. Und mit der Aussicht auf Besserung im neuen Jahr haben wir alle abgesagten Projekte noch einmal angeschaut, vor allem auch unseren PSALM. Mit dem Ergebnis, dass alle Fragen von vor einem knappen Jahr nicht nur immer noch aktuell erscheinen, sondern drängender als zuvor. Weshalb wir jetzt einfach noch einmal neu starten: Wir setzen den PSALM „for future!“ noch einmal an. Aber wie jeder Neustart bringt auch dieser Veränderungen mit sich: Die Programme und Projekte sind in der Zwischenzeit gewachsen und gereift. Und wenn wir Glück haben, erzählen sie uns von Wegen in eine bessere Zukunft: in PSALM 2021 „… for future!“

Franz von Assisi war Vorbild für viele seiner Zeitgenossen im mittelalterlichen Italien. Manche wählten den Weg in den Orden der Franziskaner, andere gründeten Laienbruderschaften, in denen sie ihren Mitmenschen in einfacher Sprache und volkstümlichen Liedern die Kernbotschaften des Evangeliums vermittelten. Ein solches „Palmsonntagsspiel“ um das Leben und Wirken Christi hat Vladimir Ivanoff rekonstruiert: Esel, Lämmchen und Palmwedel inklusive. He wanted a fundamentally different life: renouncing material goods and status. Francis of Assisi was a role model for many of his contemporaries in medieval Italy. Some chose the path of the Franciscan order; others founded lay fraternities in which they conveyed the core message of the Gospel to their fellows by way of simple language and popular songs. Vladimir Ivanoff has reconstructed such a “Palm Sunday Play” about the life and work of Christ: donkey, lambs and palm branches included.

Die alten Völker des Nordens hatten eine ganz eindeutige Antwort: Wir bewegen uns inmitten von Natur und bleiben immer an sie gebunden. Aber in Liedern und Sprüchen kann es gelingen, die magischen Kräfte der Welt, die uns umgibt, zu begreifen und zu besänftigen. Miriam Andersén aus Schweden und ihre Freunde erzählen von Frühlingssagen und Frühlingsfesten, wie sie in Skandinavien, Irland oder in den Alpen erzählt und gefeiert wurden. Und sie singen Segenssprüche und Zauberverse, mit denen einstmals die Kräfte der erwachenden Natur beschworen wurden. Is human culture separate from or in fact a part of nature? The northern peoples of former times were in no doubt: we are an integral part of and remain for ever bound to nature. But in songs and stories we can grasp the magic powers of the world around us, and appease them. Miriam Andersén from Sweden and friends tell us of springtime sagas und celebrations, as they were told and celebrated in Scandinavia, Ireland and the Alps. And they sing blessings and magic verses once used to conjure up the powers of reawakening nature.

Der Dichter und Naturwissenschaftler Primo Levi hat aus der uralten Sage eine ebenso berührende wie aktuelle Geschichte über menschliche Hoffnungen und Anmaßungen gemacht. Miguel Herz-Kestranek liest, und die Klarinetten-Twins Gurfinkel, Weltstars aus Israel, spielen dazu „Best of Klezmer“. What if we humans made ourselves creators of life and breathed a soul into a figure formed from clay? This is the vision a Jewish legend going back hundreds of years tells of, the famous Golem. Poet and scientist Primo Levi made of the ancient saga a story about human aspiration and arrogance that is as moving as it is topical. Miguel Herz-Kestranek is the reader, and the world-famous clarinet duo from Israel, the Gurfinkel twins, play “Best of Klezmer”.

Ismael Barrios und die Seinen werden mit Cuatro-Gitarre, Flöten und Percussion die „Madre tierra“ beschwören – als Lebensader eines Kontinents und als Symbolfigur für eine Zukunft voller Hoffnung. Michael Hell, sein ganz neues Barockensemble und zwei wundervolle Sängerinnen stellen der „Mutter Erde“ die trauernde Gottesmutter gegenüber, im herzzerreißenden „Stabat mater“ von Pergolesi. Zwei Mutterfiguren in Trauer. Ever since a religious zealot from Austria threw a statue of one into the Tiber, simply because Pope Francis had allegedly prayed to this “heathen idol”, almost everybody has heard of Pachamama, the earth deity from the Amazon region. Ismael Barrios will evoke the “Madre tierra” as the main artery of a continent and symbol of a future filled with hope, with his cuatro guitar, flutes and percussion. As a contrast to Mother Earth, Michael Hell, his brand new baroque ensemble and two wonderful female voices turn to the grieving Mother of God in Pergolesi’s heart-rending “Stabat mater”. Lied von der Erde Gustav Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde / The Song of the Earth Stephanie Houtzeel, Mezzosopran Herbert Lippert, Tenor recreation – GROSSES ORCHESTER GRAZ Dirigent: Florian Groß Preise: EUR 46 / 26 „Die liebe Erde allüberall blüht auf im Lenz und grünt aufs neu! Allüberall und ewig blauen licht die Fernen! Ewig.“ In Klängen zartester Weltentrückung endet „Das Lied von der Erde“, Mahlers Vision des Menschen, der sich in der ewigen Natur auflöst. Doch so gewiss wie für den Sinfoniker aus Böhmen oder seine chinesischen Dichter ist die Zukunft der Erde längst nicht mehr. Höchste Zeit, wieder einmal seine Vokalsinfonie für zwei Sänger aufzuführen. Wenn Herbert Lippert das „Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde“ anstimmt, kann man jeder Nuance des Textes folgen. Und wenn Stephanie Houtzeel vom „Abschied“ singt, leuchten die Linien ihres Mezzos in Mahler’schen Klangvisionen auf. “The dear earth everywhere blossoms in spring and grows green again. Everywhere and eternally the distance shines bright and blue! Eternally.” It is with the utmost tenderness that “The Song of the Earth”, Mahler’s vision of the individual at last vanishing to become one with eternal nature, comes to a close. But the future of Earth is by no means as certain now as it was for that composer of symphonies from Bohemia or the Chinese poets whose works he set. Time once again to perform Mahler’s vocal symphony for two singers. Every nuance of the text is audible when Herbert Lippert strikes up “The Drinking Song of the Sorrow of the Earth”. And when Stephanie Houtzeel sings “The Farewell”, Mahler visions are reflected in the glow of her mezzo.

What a wonderful world! Louis Armstrong’s love poem to our glorious planet is the title song of the final evening of PSALM, when we celebrate civil courage – the civil courage we must have to save the earth and its people. We span the history of popular music from the immortal songs of the freedom movement in the West to the climate protests of today with their icon Greta Thunberg. For this we have the perfect musical line-up from the Graz scene: Anna Heimrath, whose singing has delighted millions of TV viewers, Thomas „Effi“ Petritsch, Granada frontman and no stranger to the European rock scene, and a virtuoso sextet with multi-talent Raphael Meinhart.

No matter what the Corona restrictions at Easter, we will still have our comfort. Now there is plenty of legroom at the PSALM festival too: 110 cm space between the rows on the level, one metre space between the raised rows, and one seat left free on both sides of each group of audience members. The concerts last 60 to 70 minutes without an interval. Tickets
