BY BASIA VAN VLIET 100 issues ago the first pantheon// was born. 100 different covers, 100 deadlines, but most importantly 100 pieces of art. Each contrived with a great deal of enthusiasm and energy. Each with heart and soul put into. And each individually captivating. This continuous journey keeps on going, but the issue you’re right now reading reminds us to take a step back and behold what pantheon// has accomplished over the years. Putting de past and future in a bigger picture is what fuels this issue and what can be felt throughout the pages.

The theme, Big Picture, represents the perspective in which we put things to understand them. Because thinking of the big picture requires to create our own framework, the understanding of things can differ depending on the framwerok.

The perspective in which we see things depends on many variables.

The most obvious variable is time. While applying this variable we depict the journey of the pantheon, both the building and the magazine. Another variable is plainly eyesight. Find out if youre able to recreate the big picture of photographs taken all over campus in the article Find the Facade.

Placing a subject in different context can open your eyes and create a big picture you would not expect. Which is why reading Fashion in Architecture can offer such a different view of principles you took for granted.

This is the last issue made by the pantheon// 124 committee. Seeing this project come to an end for this group of people makes us put things in perspective. What is the Big Picture of pantheon// is a question that arises.

Will it remain the same, will it even exist in the future? But it also makes us rethink our journey, and our efforts to contribute to this never ending evolution.

The next edition will be the 101st, the beginning of a new decade. It will be made by a new group of people that will no doubt want to change and improve the magazine even more. We cannot know what the future has in store for pantheon// But what I can tell you is, that this drive, that is see in every one of the people that have been responsible for this magazine over the years is the reason for me to believe that the pantheon// will not only survive this next decade but flourish and find its momentum once again. However, that is just my personal Big Picture.//

While days are getting colder, we cant wait to shamelessly walk around in our Christmas jumpers. Well you may, as soon as our Christmas drinks, in December, where faculty meets student to celebrate the end of the year.

Every year the Chairman of the new board writes this piece in the pantheon// made by last year’s committee.

Usually it is a first encounter of the chairman with the pantheon// This year it’s not. I have had the luck to experience the efforts of the pantheon// committee up close during the last two years and I’m happy to work closely with the pantheon// committee this year, even if it’s from a distance. I am especially proud of this issue, which is the 100th, for closing one era and providing the chance for the following committees to start the next era.

As pantheon// celebrates its 100th achievement, Stylos has one big party to throw. This year, Stylos celebrates its 125 anniversary. This number represents the selfless effort and hard work, students have been putting in our society year after year. It represents the goals we have achieved and the dreams that might become reality in the future. This year Stylos is proud. This pride we will be eminent throughout the year, in the form of three separate weeks of celebrations.

However, we definitely have more projects you should stay excited about. One of them is taking a more direct approach towards sustainability at the faculty. Raising awareness about issues concerning the environment and taking action towards these problems. One of the ways we are accomplishing this is through a new committee we have started out with this year, Action Committee.

We are also continuing with a project started by the past board, an online platform for publishing captivating articles both by the pantheon// committee and other enthusiasts. Last but not least we are working on our image this year. Redefining our brand in a more professional way is what we are working on this year.

This includes organizing more activities that connect students with businesses, vacancies and various design contests. Reaching out to all disciplines within the architecture world, not only the design of architecture itself.

Together with our 125th anniversary, these projects, are more than enough cause for you to look forward this year. We hope we you will celebrate this year with us.

This summer the Big Trip took a group of 26 BK students to explore the culture and architecture of Japan. Read more about this trip on pages 23-24.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND COLOR An observant reader of the pantheon// would have noticed that each issue has its own color that keeps coming back throughout the magazine. Just leaf through this very copy and you will notice that most pages contain some reddish elements. This color was carefully selected by the editors of the pantheon//, based on several requirements: the color should match the theme of the corresponding issue and should also be compatible with both black and white text. This recurring color is referred to as the pantone of the issue.

The official name of this issue’s specific red color, as defined by the Pantone Matching System, is “Tangerine Tango” and is coded by the cryptic label 17-1463. It was given the title Color of the Year by Pantone in 2012. But what does the company really do and how what is their relationship with color?

Pantone LLC is a company that systemizes and investigates color. They help creative people from all fields, from graphic to interior design to select a color for their product. Since all monitors display colors differently, Pantone provides fan books with high accuracy prints of colors with their appropriate code names. Designers use this name to communicate with manufacturers and presses, so they are able to reproduce exactly the same color.

The fan books are printed with spot colors. That means that in order to achieve the correct tint, 18 base pigments are mixed in specific proportions before being applied to the paper. This gives a more accurate representation of color than can be achieved through the conventional CMYK process, where cyan, magenta, yellow and black are applied subsequently to the paper.

The difference becomes clear when you look on a CMYK and a spot color page through a magnifying glass. The first method will have dots of the four base colors, while

the second will have dots of the same pre-mixed color.

Furthermore the Pantone Color Institute performs research on color and its psychological impact on humans. The institute analyzes trends in the global market, that could potentially influence our perception of color. The field of research stretches from the identification of Minion Yellow to Tiffany’s Blue. Based on this knowledge the company makes forecasts on which colors will be popular in the future and provides color consultancy to companies, that need to make important decisions in the design process.

Each December the institute announces a Color of the Year which is meant to inspire designers. According to Pantone it is “…a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” For example in 2016 two colors were chosen: a pinkish and a bluish tint, symbolizing gender equality. This year the color was Ultra Violet, representing ingenuity and the mystery of the cosmic future, lying ahead of us.

With similar enthusiasm the pantheon// selects its own Color of the Magazine. Tangerine Tango was chosen for its energy and life, for it’s warmth and friendliness, for the celebration of our 100th issue.//

@WALDEN Broer en zus Laurens (27) en Lena (29) van der Wal zijn de eigenaars van het ontwerp- en ontwikkelbureau Walden. Ze richten zich op kleine, zelfvoorzienende en experimentele architectuur. Beiden hebben de bachelor Bouwkunde aan de TU Delft gevolgd en zijn in die periode pioniers van de Tiny Houses in Nederland geworden.

Hoe zag jullie leven er uit voor Walden bestond?

Laurens: Lena en ik komen uit Groningen. Onze vader is architect en ik heb van hem veel meegekregen over zijn vak. Ik hielp stiekem al wel eens mee met het maken van renders of 3D modellen in SketchUp, maar ik vond dat ik niet zomaar hetzelfde als mijn vader kon gaan doen. Na de middelbare school ben ik filosofie gaan studeren. Het denken over dingen leek echter in een oneindige spiraal van denken te resulteren waar ik vervolgens niks mee deed. Dat was voor mij de reden om toch Bouwkunde te gaan doen, want dat leek mij wel een mooie combinatie van nadenken en er iets heel concreets en praktisch mee doen. Het thema duurzaamheid hield mij bezig.

Ik weet nog dat ik een college had van Andy van den Dobbelsteen en die zei heel nadrukkelijk: “Jullie zijn de generatie die het moet doen. Mensen na jullie komen te laat, mensen boven jullie zijn te oud en die zitten al helemaal goed op hun gemak.” Dit raakte mij. Het thema duurzaamheid werd naar mijn mening te oppervlakkig behandeld: zonnepaneel hier, zonnepaneel daar. Zo gaan we er niet komen, dacht ik. Met een goede vriend ben ik tijdens mijn bachelor in aanraking gekomen met een project in Nicaragua over het realiseren van sociale woningbouw met duurzame materialen. We hebben daar een gebouw gemaakt van zelf gekapt bamboe en samengewerkt met lokale partijen. Dat was denk ik de eerste keer dat ik echt iets heb gebouwd en dat ik ook zo nadrukkelijk met duurzaamheid aan de slag ging. Na het Nicaraguaproject besefte ik dat ik eigenlijk niet aan de andere kant van de wereld problemen wilde oplossen, maar dat ik dichter bij huis wilde beginnen.

Westerse landen zijn tenslotte in het algemeen veel vervuilender dan meer zuidelijke landen. Een land als Nicaragua heeft een veel kleinere ecologische voetafdruk dan Nederland.

Lena: Ik zat op de kunstacademie voordat ik met de studie Bouwkunde begon. In mijn derde jaar van de kunstacademie ben ik naar New York gegaan en daar woonde ik in een héél klein appartementje.

Dat ‘kleine wonen’ heeft me later gefascineerd, denk

ik. Vervolgens ben ik afgestudeerd als kunstenaar en begon ik me net als Laurens bezig te houden met de klimaatcrisis. Andy heeft precies hetzelfde verhaal over duurzaamheid twee jaar later ook aan mij verteld. Dat was ook voor mij het moment dat ik dacht: we moeten wat doen! Ik wilde dingen maken waar mensen niet alleen naar kijken, maar ook iets mee kunnen doen. In die zin wilde ik echt iets bijdragen aan duurzaamheid en daarom ben ook ik op Bouwkunde terecht gekomen.

Laurens: Als je echt in het duurzaamheidsthema duikt, kan je er gemakkelijk depressief van worden, vind ik. Allerlei rode lijnen zijn al gepasseerd. Denk aan ontbossing en het uitsterven van diersoorten. Ik las gisteren nog in de krant dat in vergelijking met enkele decennia geleden het aantal insectensoorten met 70% is afgenomen. Die insecten hebben een heel belangrijke ecologische functie.

Lena: Ons hele systeem stort in als de insecten weg zijn, dus dat geeft de urgentie om in te grijpen wel aan.

Hoe is Walden ontstaan?

Lena: Ik deed destijds een acceleratorprogramma van Urban Greeners in Almere om een eigen duurzaam bedrijf te beginnen en toen heb ik Laurens opgebeld om te vragen of hij meedeed. Ik had toentertijd een fascinatie voor Tiny Houses, onder andere vanwege mijn ervaring in New York. Tiny Houses bestonden op dat moment nog niet in Nederland en waren alleen in Amerika te vinden. Met een aantal anderen hebben we Tiny House Nederland opgericht om het concept ook hier van de grond te tillen. Tiny House Nederland begon als blog en tegenwoordig is het een stichting.

We kwamen in contact met Marjolein, een vrouw die graag in een Tiny House wilde wonen. Wij besloten als een soort oefenproject een Tiny House voor haar te ontwerpen en te bouwen. Zonder een bedrijfsnaam of website te hebben, belde nu.nl ons. De titel van hun artikel luidde: “Eerste architectuurbureau voor kleine huisjes opgericht.” Ook SBS6 wilde de bouw van het

huisje volgen. Door die vliegende start in de media hebben we meteen een aantal opdrachten gekregen en zo ontstond ons eigen bedrijf.

Kunnen jullie kort toelichten wat voor ontwerpen jullie maken, waarom jullie dat doen en hoe jullie het aanpakken?

Laurens: Laten we beginnen met waarom we dit bedrijf hebben opgericht. De bouwsector is verantwoordelijk voor 40% van alle CO2 uitstoot en dan heb je het nog niet over alle andere ecologische effecten die deze sector veroorzaakt. Onze projecten hebben te maken met de hervorming van die bouwsector. We hebben een Tiny House gemaakt om te kijken hoe een persoon veel kan besparen en duurzaam kan leven. Mensen vinden het wel heel moeilijk om te tornen aan de hoeveelheid spullen en de hoeveelheid ruimte die ze hebben. Weinig mensen willen bezuinigen of een stapje terug doen.

Lena: Onze grootste frustratie ten aanzien van de bouwsector is dat in elke andere industrie producten in de loop van de tijd duurzamer en goedkoper zijn geworden door geoptimaliseerde en efficiëntere bedrijfsprocessen, maar dit in de bouwsector niet zo is.

Dat heeft er deels mee te maken dat grond schaars is en dat vastgoed vast is. Bij alles wat we doen vragen wij ons af: kan dit niet efficiënter? Behalve dat de bouwsector niet duurzaam is, is de bouwsector ook nogal oneerlijk en niet zo sociaal. Mensen met vrij hoge inkomens zijn in staat een huis te kopen, terwijl mensen met lage inkomens dat niet kunnen. Je hebt projectontwikkelaars en investeerders die veel geld verdienen aan vastgoed, terwijl mensen met een kleinere beurs dat niet doen.

Laurens: Een voorbeeld van een van onze projecten is de microdisco van 2,5 m2. Hij draait op zonnepanelen

Zonder een bedrijfsnaam of website te hebben, belde nu.nl ons. De titel van hun artikel luidde: “Eerste architectuurbureau voor kleine huisjes opgericht.” en is helemaal zelfvoorzienend. Hiermee brengen we klein wonen en besparen onder de aandacht op festivals.

Een ander project, in Rotterdam, gaat over groene dakdorpen. Groene daken hebben een heel positief effect op de ecologie van de stad. Ze verminderen het urban heat island effect van opwarmende steden en ze bufferen water. Door kleine woningen op grote gebouwen te plaatsen, kunnen de groendaken worden bekostigd, die nu financieel onaantrekkelijk zijn.

Voor weer een ander project hebben we met lokale houtsoorten van Staatsbosbeheer straatmeubilair gemaakt. Momenteel wordt er een uitbreiding aan een bestaande dijkwoning in Everdingen naar ons ontwerp gebouwd. Hiervoor worden biobased materialen gebruikt (houten skelet, vlas isolatie, houten geveldelen) en de dakbedekking van zonnepanelen wekt eigen energie op. Het zijn dus heel diverse projecten op heel verschillende schaal. We proberen met onze projecten

de bouwsector te innoveren, vooral met betrekking tot duurzaamheid.

Laurens: We werken op een speelse manier. Een Tiny House is een avontuurlijk huis, want je kunt het overal neerzetten.

Lena: We werken op experimentele wijze en, zoals gezegd, op verschillende schaal.

Laurens: We zijn begonnen met het idee: we gaan iets ontwerpen en dat is de oplossing. Toen kwamen we er achter dat de rol van de architect, als je echt iets duurzaams wil maken, vrij klein is. Je komt heel vaak te laat om grote betekenis te hebben, want belangrijke besluiten zijn al genomen. Dus we zijn ook aan het experimenteren daarin met onze eigen rol. We spelen steeds een andere rol en vragen ons af: wat heeft veel impact en wat vinden we zelf leuk?

Lena: Ik denk dat onze missie uiteindelijk gewoon is te kijken hoe we de bouwsector ofwel kunnen ontwrichten ofwel op een bepaalde manier kunnen prikkelen om te zorgen dat het een stuk socialer en een stuk duurzamer wordt.

In hoeverre is er belangstelling voor nieuwe manieren van wonen en waar merken jullie dat aan?

Lena: Je ziet het enerzijds aan de Facebookpagina die exponentieel gegroeid is. Anderzijds zie je dat steeds meer gemeenten grond ter beschikking stellen voor experimenten. Den Haag heeft bijvoorbeeld een soort proeftuin voor Tiny Living.

Laurens: Daarnaast merk ik in mijn directe omgeving dat zowel oude als jonge mensen een meer collectieve manier van wonen interessant zijn gaan vinden. Ze zijn bereid naar een soort woonvorm toe te gaan waarbij je faciliteiten deelt zoals een moestuin, wat in die zin wel zuiniger is omdat je meer gaat samenwerken.

Lena: In onze omgeving is er dus echt behoefte aan andere woonvormen, maar de bouwsector voorziet daarin niet. De partijen die ons wonen faciliteren, zijn niet op de hoogte of willen niet op de hoogte zijn van de trends die nu spelen. Of ze zijn gewoon te traag om er iets mee te doen en lopen dus achter de feiten aan.

De zekerheid of iets over 10 jaar nog wel hip is, speelt voor hen een belangrijke rol.

De Tiny Houses komen oorspronkelijk uit Amerika en jullie hebben dit concept vervolgens in Nederland geïntroduceerd. Is de uitwerking daadwerkelijk verschillend of gaat het puur en alleen om de plek?

Laurens: De uitwerking is zeker anders, want ik vind die geitenwollensokken huisjes in Amerika, die typische cottages, echt verschrikkelijk (lachend). We hebben geprobeerd er een eigentijds karakter aan te geven en om duurzaamheid wat hipper te maken.

Wat maakt jullie bureau anders dan andere architectenbureaus?

Lena: Wat ons bedrijf uniek maakt, is het hebben van een niche. We waren een van de eerste

architectenbureaus die überhaupt een specialisatie hadden: kleine duurzame huisjes. Ten tweede was het in die tijd ook wel uniek om te kiezen voor radicale duurzaamheid.

Laurens: Ik denk wat ons ook onderscheidt van veel andere partijen is dat we niet enkel en alleen architect zijn. We zijn tegelijkertijd ook kunstenaar, ontwerper en ondernemer.

Heeft het kiezen van verschillende masters invloed gehad op jullie individuele ideeën over het bedrijf?

Lena: Ja, we hebben er bewust voor gekozen om allebei een eigen richting op te gaan. We lijken heel erg op elkaar, maar dat is voor een bedrijf helemaal niet handig. Het is veel beter als je verschillende skills hebt. Dus toen vroegen wij ons af welke skills we niet hadden voor waar we naartoe wilden: de bouwsector inspireren of veranderen. We wilden inzicht krijgen in duurzaamheid op systemisch niveau en daarnaast ook inzicht krijgen in de bouwsector en de financiële haalbaarheid. Aangezien ik meer business minded ben dan Laurens en hij meer een keiharde duurzaamheididealist is, doe ik nu de master MBE (Management in the Built Environment) en Laurens de master Metropolitan Analysis, Design & Engineering.

Wordt het verduurzamen beperkt door de huidige bouwsector?

Lena: Het winstbejag van lokale overheden beperkt de verduurzaming van de bouwsector. Gemeentes verkopen hun grond vaak aan de hoogste bieder, de partij met het minst duurzame gebouw. Duurzaamheid kost namelijk geld en sociale huurwoningen maken kost ook geld. Met meer wetgeving hierover zou de bouwsector in één keer kunnen veranderen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan de nieuwe wet die ervoor heeft gezorgd dat per 1 januari 2019 nieuwbouwwoningen gasvrij moeten zijn.

Laurens: Duurzaamheid wordt inderdaad niet altijd gestimuleerd door de wetgeving. Er wordt bijvoorbeeld veel belasting geheven op arbeid en er wordt haast geen belasting geheven op grondstoffengebruik.

Nieuwe grondstoffen delven is goedkoop en dus aantrekkelijk, terwijl hergebruik en reparatie duur zijn en dus onaantrekkelijk.

In hoeverre denken jullie te kunnen bijdragen aan verduurzaming van de bouwsector?

Lena: Wij hebben geen illusie dat wij als klein bedrijf in ons eentje de hele bouwsector gaan veranderen.

Het enige wat wij hopen te doen, is daar in prikken of business modellen creëren die het wel kunnen en natuurlijk anderen stimuleren om mee te doen!

Laurens: Maar het zal samen moeten gaan met hervormingen in de maatschappij, zoals het omdraaien van belastingen. Dat belasting op grondstoffen juist heel hoog wordt en dat de belasting op arbeid heel

laag wordt.

Hoe ziet de toekomst van Walden er volgens jullie uit?

Lena: Tijdens het accelerator programma moesten we een tijdlijn maken van twintig jaar vooruit. Die zag er toen als volgt uit: eerst worden we architect, dan gaan we één Tiny House maken, dan gaan we tien Tiny Houses maken, dan gaan we andere dingen doen met duurzaamheid en uiteindelijk worden we ontwikkelaars die het een stuk duurzamer en socialer aanpakken. Ons beeld is een stuk genuanceerder geworden. We vinden een Tiny House fantastisch, maar we geloven niet dat een hele wereld vol met Tiny Houses een duurzame of sociale oplossing is. Naarmate we ons meer zijn gaan verdiepen in de bouwsector, ondervonden we een groot probleem: ketenintegratie. Partijen in de bouw hebben verschillende belangen en moeten toch samen iets maken; dat leidt niet altijd tot de beste resultaten.

Het is meer een soort concurrentiestrijd om tot iets te komen, terwijl de partijen juist moeten samenwerken.

Laurens: Onze toekomstvisie is een soort combi te zijn van een architect en projectontwikkelaar die lange termijn betrokken blijft bij zijn projecten, omdat we denken dat daar duurzamere ontwikkeling uit voortkomt. Ik denk niet dat wij een gigantisch bedrijf willen worden, je moet toch ook een beetje bij je eigen credo blijven dat je ook meer met minder kan.

Lena: Maar los daarvan denk ik dat we ook altijd nog wel blijven spelen. Charles & Ray Eames, een designer duo, waren iets wat eigenlijk niemand kon definiëren.

Samen hadden ze een bureau dat zowel stoelen, huizen als animatiefilms maakte. Het kon van alles zijn, maar het had wel een heel onderscheidend karakter. Ik zie ons ooit in de toekomst, net als zij, ook op zo’n vrije manier een bedrijf zijn. Het ontwerp van de stoeltjes die in de espressobar staan is trouwens ook van hun!

Wat hebben jullie in de praktijk geleerd wat je niet tijdens je studie hebt geleerd en wat willen jullie meegeven aan de huidige bouwkundestudenten?

Lena: Op deze hele studie wordt je keihard opgejaagd om zo snel mogelijk en zo competitief mogelijk iets neer te zetten, maar daar komen toch gewoon niet de beste ideeën vandaan? Soms moet je er gewoon nog een nachtje over kunnen slapen, echt lekker kunnen uitdenken of lol mee kunnen hebben. Als je echt iets goed wil uitdenken, kost dat gewoon tijd.

Laurens: We hebben natuurlijk ook gewoon zelf tijd gemaakt voor ons bedrijf; ik heb 5 jaar over mijn bachelor gedaan. Ik zou je niet door je studie heen haasten. En ik denk dat je wel echt ontzettend veel kan leren in de praktijk. Het zijn heel simpele praktische dingen die je hier niet gaat leren: hoe je met klanten praat, hoe je met opdrachtgevers en leveranciers omgaat, wat je rol is om alle partijen bij elkaar te houden, hoe je een bedrijf runt etc. Allemaal van dat

soort praktische skills. Wat ik nog meer heb geleerd in de praktijk is dat wanneer je ver wilt komen, je groot moet denken en hoog moet inzetten. In de studie heb je geen budget, heb je geen grenzen en veel vrijheid. Als je echt coole dingen wilt doen in de praktijk, dan moet je met diezelfde vibe erin gaan. Met de Tiny Houses zijn we gewoon tegen de bestaande regelgeving ingegaan in plaats van ons erdoor te laten beperken. Gemeenten werden gedwongen om er iets mee te doen. Eigenlijk mag je niet zo klein bouwen van het Bouwbesluit en woningen zijn normaliter aangesloten op het rioleringsnetwerk en allerlei andere netwerken. Hier werden uitzonderingen voor gemaakt.

Lena: Er is wel een heel groot gat tussen de vrijheid die je in de studie hebt en de vrijheid die je in de praktijk hebt als architect. Ik denk dat heel veel studenten denken dat wat je hier leert, is hoe het werkelijk is. Dat is absoluut niet zo. Je bent later maar een heel klein deel van je tijd echt bezig met toffe ideeĂŤn bedenken, concepten bedenken, met heel veel vrijheid en originaliteit.

Laurens: Wat ik heb gemist in de bachelor en waarom ik heel erg veel projecten ben gaan doen naast mijn studie, is omdat het allemaal niet praktisch werd. Alles bleef zweven in de conceptvorming en architectuur kan ook heel onbevredigend zijn als je iets niet een keer gaat realiseren. Je doet hier wel praktische dingen zoals tekenen, maar als student sta je nog ver weg van de echte bouw.

Lena: En ĂŠĂŠn heel belangrijk ding wat ik iedereen wil meegeven bij bouwkunde: je medestudenten zijn niet

je vijand. We krijgen hier als architect in de bachelor een competitiviteit aangeleerd. Als je iets goeds en iets moois wilt maken, dan moet je samenwerken, elkaar wat gunnen en elkaars kwaliteiten gebruiken. Dus in plaats van dat we de strijd met elkaar aangaan, moeten we elkaars creativiteit en intelligentie gebruiken om te bedenken hoe we onze rol kunnen vormgeven.

Laurens: Mijn advies aan studenten is: bepaal je eigen tempo en wissel het lekker af met iets praktisch doen of even ertussenuit gaan. En idealiter doe je dat voordat je bent afgestudeerd, want dan kun je daarna je opleiding nog gebruiken om je te verdiepen in alle fascinaties die je hebt ontdekt! praktisch doen of even ertussenuit gaan. ORIGAMI Naar aanleiding van een inspirerende documentaire die ik onlangs heb bekeken, The Origami Code, wil ik jullie graag wat vertellen over de wonderlijke wereld van origami.

Eeuwenlang was origami puur en alleen een kunstvorm. Men vouwde allerlei dierlijke figuren van papier, denk bijvoorbeeld aan de bekende kraanvogel die nog steeds ieder Japans kind leert vouwen. Doordat wiskundigen vanaf de jaren 90 vanuit hun vakgebied de principes van de origami probeerden te doorgronden, heeft origami belangrijke wetenschappelijke toepassingen gekregen in onder andere de lucht- en ruimtevaartindustrie, de automobielindustrie, de medische wereld, de robotica en de architectuur. Enkele van deze toepassingen worden hieronder nader toegelicht aan de hand van drie voorbeelden die het nut en de creativiteit van deze gevouwen structuren illustreren.

Ruimtevaart Ingenieurs van het Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory hebben een concept ontwikkeld voor een ruimtetelescoop met een lens van 100 meter diameter, een lens zo groot als een voetbalveld. Ter vergelijking: momenteel is de grootste telescoop in de ruimte ‘NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope’ met een diameter van 2,4 meter.

Raketten en spaceshuttles variëren qua ontwerp, maar hebben allemaal beperkte afmetingen van ongeveer 4 bij 10 meter en dus was de vraag: hoe kan zo’n grote lens in een dergelijk ruimtevaartuig passen? Het antwoord hierop was: door de lens compact op te vouwen! De ingenieurs ontwierpen samen met Robert Lang, een vooraanstaande natuurkundige binnen de internationale origamigemeenschap en tevens origamikunstenaar, een geschikt patroon: een parapluachtige vouwstructuur.

Een prototype van 5 meter dat zich kan opvouwen tot een diameter van 1,5 meter heeft al aangetoond dat de vouwstructuur werkt, maar er spelen nog veel meer technische aspecten een grote rol die ook onderzocht moeten worden dus dit veelbelovende concept zit nog altijd in de ontwikkelingsfase. Deze ontwikkeling is van grote waarde voor de toekomstige ruimtevaart, want met grotere lenzen kunnen scherpere beelden worden verkregen en kan verder de ruimte in worden gekeken.

Architectuur Een prachtig voorbeeld van de toepassing van origami in de architectuur is de vouwbare doorgang tussen twee gebouwen van origami-wetenschapper Tomohiro Tachi (University of Tokyo). Bij deze ontwerpoefening laat Tachi zien hoe de ingangen van twee gebouwen tijdelijk met

elkaar verbonden kunnen worden met behulp van een plat opvouwbare structuur. Het project is overigens niet gerealiseerd, maar het laat wel zien hoe origami als basis voor een nieuwe transformeerbare gebouwtypologie kan dienen. Deze structuren bieden een hoge efficïentie in materiaalgebruik en daarnaast een eenvoudiger bouwproces doordat er geen verbindingen aan te pas komen.

Geneeskunde Zhong You en Kaori Kuribayashi, wetenschappers van Oxford University, hebben een origami-stent ontworpen van nitinol folie. Een stent is een cilindervormig buisje dat in een bloedvat wordt geplaatst om een verstopping in een bloedvat tegen te gaan. Vanzelfsprekend moet een stent zich in een compacte toestand bevinden wanneer deze zich door de vaten van het lichaam beweegt en dat kan door de stent heel klein op te vouwen. Op de plaats waar de verstopping zich bevindt, ontvouwt de stent zich tot zijn volledige grootte om het vat te verbreden en zo de doorstroming van het bloed te verbeteren. Hiermee kunnen ziektes als aderverkalking en slokdarmkanker worden behandeld. Het probleem bij eerdere stentontwerpen was dat de ader na inbrenging van de stent alsnog werd geblokkeerd als gevolg van ingroei van weefsel door de gaasachtige structuur van de stent. De origami-stent voorkomt dit doordat de nitinol folie geen gaten bevat en er dus geen ingroei van weefsel kan optreden. Daarnaast is het gebruik van een traditionele ballon niet meer nodig, omdat de stent zichzelf ontvouwt.

Als je nu ook gefascineerd bent geraakt door origami en er wellicht zelf mee aan de slag wilt, dan is het boek ‘Folding Techniques for Designers’ van Paul Jackson aan te raden. Dit boek leert je niet origamimodellen exact na te vouwen zoals honderden origami-boeken dat doen, maar het leert je verschillende vouwtechnieken waardoor je deze op een creatieve manier kan toepassen op je eigen ontwerpen.// SOURCES

The two disciplines of making fashion and architecture have always been connected with each other. Even though the design objects are different, the design processes seem to have much in common. But do they? And if so: where do architecture and fashion meet?

It is obvious that designing a garment is very different to designing a building. The techniques, rhythms and spaces of fashion and architecture are actually quite different.

Designing fashion is a fast, pliable process. One thinks of a certain shape or movement and the design can fairly easy be visualized and realized. Changes made to a design are done fast and intuitive. Also, when creating a garment, delicate and intricate work is required. When working with fabrics, and the human body, the smallest details can make the biggest difference. Architecture, on the other hand, is a slow profession. Changes aren’t as easily made and have bigger consequences. Construction and realism play a bigger part in the design process, for the building needs to be safe and solid. The realization and construction phase is, of course, a very long process (Crewe, 2010).

Aside of all the differences, fashion and architecture do share a lot. They both express ideas of cultural, social and personal identity. Reflecting the interests and ambitions of a generation, they give a voice to culture. Fashion and architecture, among many other creative outlets, show the face of a space (city) or time (generation). One does so by dressing bodies, the other by dressing places (Juinio, 2012).

Fashion designers and architects can be a great source of inspiration to each other. This can flow into iconic collaborations, such as the Prada Transformer. The Italian fashion house of Prada worked together with Dutch starchitect Rem Koolhaas to create a standout installation.

It was an interactive accommodation for cultural events situated in Seoul, Korea. The design consists of four basic geometric shapes – a circle, a cross, a hexagon, a rectangle – leaning together and wrapped in a translucent membrane.

The Transformer can be rotated on each side depending on the event, with four different facades and floor plan configurations, so that floors become walls and walls become the ceiling (Zargani, 2008). Prada and Koolhaas worked very closely together on this piece of artwork. They are both designers famous and successful because of their radical approaches to design, each in their own design field.

By looking at fashion design and the industry we can create new possibilities for the ways in which we look at and understand the built environment. Fashion can show the limits and possibilities of new materials and open up a space to rethink the way we see architecture.

The example of a cross-disciplinair collaboration shows the potential to transform the way we envision accomodation, interaction, space and the city, creating new possibilities for design. We need to unite in a mutual desire to design to create amazing things (Crewe, 2010). //

THE CAMPUS The TU Delft has a rich history and has moved around the city of Delft in the last two decades. Where the university was first based within the city centre, it gradually moved outside the city. In the 60s and 70s the campus expanded more to the south of Delft and most of the campus as we know it now was built.

The TU Delft started as the Royal Academy (Koninklijke Akademie) on the 8th of January 1842. The school was founded by a man named Antoine Lipkens and took residence in a prestigious canal house at the Oude Delft.

This particular canal house was built in 1717, and had already had multiple purposes. It had been a brewery, a private residence, and before the Royal Academy was founded, it had been a military school. The royal academy was not very successful, therefore it was dissolved in 1864 and the buildings were given to the Polytechnic school (Polytechnische school). The way of teaching at the Polytechnic school looked already a lot like the way students are taught at universities today. On the right there is a map of Delft that shows the situation in 1905.

In 1905, when certain educational laws were changed, the name of the school was changed into ‘Technische Hoogeschool van Delft’. Even though the name did not suggest it, the school was now considered as an university.

Yet it took another 80 years till they changed the name to ‘Technische Universiteit Delft’, or in short: TU Delft.

1975 From a historic point of view the faculties of Civil Engineering and Architecture were inevitably linked. It wasn’t till the early 20th century that they split and officially formed separate faculties. They also used to share a study association (‘Praktische Studie’), but this was also separated after World War II. The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences was always scattered around the city and got it’s own faculty in the 1920s on the Oostplantsoen. When the university started to move towards the south of Delft, a new faculty building was realised in the centre of the nowadays campus. A brutalist concrete building, designed by van den Broek and Bakema architects. Above there is a picture of the faculty as it is now. The Geosciences part was added in the 2000s with a glass extension on the left side of the building. This was also realised by the same architecture firm as the rest of the building.

Just like the faculty of Civil Engineering, was the faculty of Architecture also scattered around the city centre. One of the departments of architecure was in a monumental building on the Oude Delft (left bottom). From the 70s,

the faculty of Architecture moved to the south side of the campus, to a building that was designed by van den Broek en Bakema architects as well (van den Broek was a lecturer at the Technische Hoogeschool and got multiple assignments for buildings around the campus.). In 2008 the faculty of Architecture burned down and had to be relocated in a short amount of time. The formerly known as ‘Red Chemistry’ building on the Julianalaan was vacant, and within one summer it was renovated into the new Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.// SOURCES

The architecture community is a strange place.

To obtain access of it’s highly esteemed jargon, overpriced stationary and strong opinions you needed to spend the vast majority of your 20’s in an overcrowded, poorly lit room constructing intricate doll houses whilst wallowing in a pile of your own tracing paper. I’m an architecture student and I’m only exaggerating a little bit.

Now, the average westerner spends 87% of their lives inside buildings and a lot less time considering the impact that architecture has on our lives. We all know and accept the relationship between quality of life and the quality of architecture that we live in, so why this disconnect between the public and their architects? Considering the exclusive and introspective nature of the architecture community, it should come as no surprise to many architects that vast swathes of the public either feel alienated by architecture, or just don’t care about it at all.

For those who seem to disregard architecture’s importance in their lives, the question remains ‘why?’. Architecture is a mirror to the times that we live in, just like cinema, art, music, technology and all cultural involvement, yet architecture is the only category that you cannot avoid. No matter where you live, architecture in one form or another is always present and you always must engage with it. It is however possible to live a life - despite difficult to achieve - without any interaction with other forms of culture. Yet the average layperson is not shy of expressing their opinions on the most recent film or song. But as soon as architecture comes into the question, they seem to doubt their opinions. There seems to be a paradox here, architecture which no one can in physicality avoid, manages to avoid being discussed in mainstream media almost entirely.

So when we look at historic and monumental architecture, we must remember that we are only seeing the highlights, whilst today, we predominantly see all the rubbish which obscures the good buildings that actually are getting built. Furthermore, the buildings that the general public regard as masterpieces are of one of three typologies - religious, royal or governmental.

It is also these three typologies that spent the most money on architecture as a sign of either power or divinity. Whereas today, we run on a cut-throat capitalist economic system where buildings (generally speaking) get built as cheaply and as quickly as possible. Space is money and unfortunately fluted columns don’t generate as much capital as they used to.

How contemporary architecture has become a stranger to the people

So now I pose the question of perhaps people don’t feel comfortable discussing architecture (contemporary architecture in particular) because they don’t understand it. And we all know, that things we don’t understand we either a) avoid or b) dislike, because no one likes to be made to feel like they don’t know something. It’s no secret that architects haven’t exactly gone out of their way to please the public. We need look no further than our good friend Peter Eisenman who said that ‘the role of the architect is not to give people what they want, but what they should want if they were intelligent enough to have good taste.’ Now, if that doesn’t make you want to engage with architecture then I don’t know what will. Opinions like these are unfortunately the ones that do make their way into mainstream media.

It seems that a common stereotype of architects is their blatant disregard for the public and their opinions, resulting in architecture that the public feel betrayed by, not only because they simply don’t understand it, but because it seems totally alien to them. So if this truly is a common belief held by the public about contemporary architecture and architects, then it is no surprise that most people feel comforted by arches instead of piloti (aka - a skinny column devised by Le Corbusier).

We like what is familiar, until we have been indoctrinated to feel otherwise. So of course, no one is refuting that St Paul’s cathedral is a masterpiece whilst the shopping mall next to it leaves much to be desired. But we should remember that St Paul’s cathedral was constructed in 1675. Since then, an uncountable number of rubbish buildings have been torn

If alienation is the case, then how did this happen? By alienation, I don’t mean a total avoidance of architecture, because the rate at which tourists photograph the Sagrada Familia or Big Ben doesn’t show any indication of slowing down. So then if people do show an interest to historic architecture when abroad, how can we engage the layman into the realm of contemporary architecture past a mere ‘I like it’ or ‘I don’t’? It is these buildings that genuinely affect the way we spend our lives - from museums to offices to hospitals and they deserve to generate opinions. This brings us back to the idea of architecture and architects not seeming open or humble enough to accept feedback. Even though I am saying the general public don’t seem to engage with architecture on a level that it deserves, I am not disregarding the people that do engage, and the efforts that architecture is trying to make.

From exhibitions in popular galleries to open days of infamously private buildings, architecture is slowly gaining more exposure for itself. Focusing on the UK for a moment, the RIBA does great amounts to make architecture more accessible to the public.

However, all these efforts still seem few and far between on the grand scale of things. Every exhibition is a small piece of information on a certain aspect of architecture, but it doesn’t necessarily engage people with the actual buildings around them. We live in a fast paced world where every day there is a new stimulus, and our attention spans are forever decreasing.

It’s easy to listen to a 3 minute song and generate an opinion on it, but it requires a significantly larger amount of effort to walk through a building, often requiring multiple visits, to truly understand and appreciate a work of architecture.

Numerous questions have been generated without many answers, but I leave you with this nugget of wisdom from the beloved Churchill himself: ‘We shape our buildings and afterwards our buildings shape us’. For someone who didn’t study architecture, his observation wasn’t too bad. So maybe, in the end, appreciating architecture is not something you need be conscious of.

Buildings affect us regardless if we acknowledge them or not, so maybe we just need to try harder to make better buildings, or at least make fewer rubbish ones.//

RIETVELD SCHRÖDERHUIS het woonconcept Onlangs heb ik het wereldberoemde Rietveld Schröderhuis bezocht, een trekpleister voor liefhebbers van moderne architectuur uit binnen- en buitenland. Dit huis heet zo omdat Rietveld het heeft ontworpen, in opdracht van mevrouw Schröder. Het was zijn eerste volwaardige bouwproject en was tevens het begin van een periode waarin hij experimenteerde met de modernisering van het wonen. Zelfs in deze tijd doet het huis zeer modern aan, terwijl het al bijna een eeuw in Utrecht staat. Hierover blijf ik me verwonderen. Velen zullen het exterieur met het kleurrijke samenspel tussen de verschillende gevelelementen onmiddellijk herkennen, maar de binnenruimte mag niet aan de aandacht ontsnappen. De indeling van het huis representeert namelijk een revolutionair woonconcept, hetgeen wat in dit artikel centraal staat.

De opdrachtgeefster en haar invloed Na het overlijden van haar man in 1923 wilde Schröder samen met haar drie kinderen elders in Utrecht een kleiner huis gaan bewonen dat meer naar haar wens was. Aan de uiterste rand van de stad, aan de Prins Hendriklaan, vonden Rietveld en mevrouw Schröder een geschikte kavel van zo’n 400 m2. De kavel grensde aan een gesloten rij traditionele bakstenen woningen van drie verdiepingen en was aantrekkelijk om op te bouwen vanwege het weidse uitzicht over het omliggende polderlandschap. Anders dan het huis zelf, is dat mooie uitzicht overigens niet bewaard gebleven.

De omgeving heeft een drastische verandering ondergaan.

In 1962, een jaar voor Rietvelds dood, werd besloten vlak naast het huis een verhoogde vierbaans autoweg aan te leggen. Dit zou resulteren in een ernstige aantasting van het uitzicht vanuit het Rietveld Schröderhuis. Mevrouw Schröder heeft destijds een bezwaarschrift ingediend bij het Utrechtse gemeentebestuur, maar zonder succes.

Rietveld heeft zelfs gesuggereerd om het huis te laten afbreken vanwege het verstoorde uitzicht. Dat voorstel is gelukkig niet uitgevoerd.

Truus Schröder heeft grote invloed gehad op het ontwerp door haar uitgesproken opvatting over de manier waarop zij wilde wonen. Zo wilde zij graag de woonruimte op de eerste verdieping hebben, ingedeeld als een grote open ruimte, zoals een zolder. Daar was immers het uitzicht over het (in die tijd) omringende polderlandschap optimaal.

Ook wilde zij dat ieder vertrek zelfstandig zou kunnen functioneren door een bed of bank te plaatsen, door te voorzien in een eigen aan- en afvoer van water en door een eigen deur naar buiten. Op deze manier bepaalde zij grotendeels de indeling van de ruimte. Mevrouw Schröder

wist haar wensen duidelijk te benoemen en liet deze door Rietveld in tekeningen omzetten. Ze gaf hem echter wel alle vrijheid die wensen naar eigen inzicht te realiseren.

Vernieuwd woonconcept De indeling van de woning is een van de meest vernieuwende, om niet te zeggen revolutionaire aspecten van het Rietveld Schröderhuis. Mevrouw Schröder wenste zoals gezegd een open woonverdieping. Rietveld heeft schuifwanden toegepast op deze verdieping, waardoor de ruimte door de bewoner, naar gelang daar behoefte aan bestaat, kan worden getransformeerd in vijf afzonderlijke kamers: drie slaapkamers, een badkamer en een woongedeelte. Verder ontstaat er, indien de wanden uitgeschoven worden, een hal met de trap die in het midden van de verdieping uitkomt. Het trapgat kan worden afgesloten met houten en glazen panelen. De leefruimte kan worden vergroot door de schuifwanden juist weg te schuiven. Hierdoor wordt de ruimte multifunctioneel en ook is er dan uitzicht naar drie kanten. Dit doet de ruimte groter voorkomen dan hij werkelijk is; slechts zeven bij tien meter!

De flexibele plattegrond van de verdieping is zeer bijzonder.

De begane grond daarentegen is wel ingedeeld in aparte kamers met specifieke functies: de woonkeuken, het atelier – een kamer van maar drie bij zesenhalve meter – waar Rietveld zich een aantal jaar heeft gevestigd, een kamertje bedoeld als studeerkamer/spreekkamer en een kamer voor de hulp in de huishouding. Het huis werd zo verdeeld in een werk- en woonverdieping. De vertrekken op de begane grond liggen rond een centraal halletje met de trap naar boven. Bij deze indeling is het zelfstandig functioneren van de vertrekken, wat tevens een wens van mevrouw Schröder

was, duidelijk te zien. Ieder vertrek heeft een eigen deur naar de tuin of één van de balkons en daarnaast bevat ieder vertrek een wastafeltje met een kraan. Op deze manier was er ook ruimte om alleen te zijn binnen het gezin.

Rietveld had evenals mevrouw Schröder een eigen opvatting over wonen. Met haar bouwopdracht kreeg hij de mogelijkheid die ideeën vorm te geven. Volgens hem bevorderden de traditionele huizen een passieve levenshouding, waardoor wonen een vorm van automatisme werd. Rietveld pleitte voor actief en bewust, niet routinematig wonen. ‘Wonen is ook een w e r k woord’, aldus Rietveld (Dettingmeijer, Van Thoor, & Van Zijl, 2010).

Deze overtuiging lag ten grondslag aan de inrichting van het Rietveld Schröderhuis. Voor elke handeling moest de bewoner het huis enigszins transformeren; om in bad te gaan moest de scharnierwand worden opengevouwen en voor het studeren moest de tafel worden uitgeklapt.

Hoe Rietveld de regelgeving wist te omzeilen De flexibele indeling van de verdieping én het platte dak stonden overigens op gespannen voet met de bouwregelgeving conform de Woningwet uit 1901.

Volgens het stedenbouwkundig plan van 1923 moest er een stadsvilla op de plaats van het stuk grond komen, te bouwen volgens de toen geldende regels. Om voor het onconventionele project een bouwvergunning te krijgen, heeft Rietveld op de tekening voor de bouwaanvraag de verdieping als zolder aangegeven (met een verdeling in stippellijnen) waardoor het leek of het huis als geheel een traditionele indeling had. Deze aanduiding was misleidend.

Ook lijkt het huis in het zijaanzicht een schuin dak te hebben.

Op grond daarvan heeft het gemeentebestuur Rietveld een bouwvergunning verleend. Blijkbaar heeft er tijdens de concrete uitvoering geen controle plaatsgevonden door Bouw- en Woningtoezicht, een instantie die de macht heeft de bouw stil te leggen als er niet aan de voorschriften wordt voldaan. In slechts vijf maanden tijd werd het Rietveld Schröderhuis gebouwd voor een bedrag van (omgerekend) 4207 euro! In januari 1925 kon mevrouw Schröder het huis al intrekken, samen met haar drie kinderen. Rietvelds honorarium was slechts 408 euro (Van Zijl & Mulder, 2009).

Huidige toestand Mevrouw Schröder heeft zestig jaar in het huis gewoond, van 1925 tot haar overlijden in 1985. Zij heeft ervoor gezorgd dat het huis bleef voortbestaan door het te schenken aan het Centraal Museum, dat het huis in 1987 geheel heeft laten renoveren. Tevens werd in dat jaar het huis voor het publiek opengesteld. De UNESCO zag het Rietveld Schröderhuis als een belangrijk en uniek icoon in de westerse architectuurgeschiedenis en heeft het huis in 2000 daarom opgenomen op de werelderfgoedlijst.//

By craftmanship and engineering skills way ahead of their time. The Romans constructed the dome in Roman concrete, adjusting its material composition along the full height of the dome. In the lower parts, a heavier material composition with basalt was used. In the higher part of the dome, lighter aggregates such as pumice were used. The oculus in the dome was created to let daylight enter and for natural ventilation.//

De vrijheid voor architecten in Japan Afgelopen zomer ging de Stylos Grote Reis naar Japan en ik was ĂŠĂŠn van de dertig gelukkigen die dit mochten meemaken. Tijdens onze rondreis van maar liefst drie weken hebben we zes verschillende steden bezocht: Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Fukuoka en Okayama. Daarnaast hebben we rondgefietst op de twee schitterende kunsteilanden Teshima en Naoshima. De aanhoudende hittegolf, de aardbeving (waar ik doorheen ben geslapen) en de tyfoon hielden ons niet tegen. Op het programma stond een bezoek aan enkele architectenbureaus: frontofficetokyo,

SPACESPACE, Alphaville Architects en het kantoor van de wereldberoemde Japanse architect Kengo Kuma.

Bij ieder bureau troffen wij een georganiseerde chaos van maquettes, bouwtekeningen en talloze boeken aan. Met name tijdens ons bezoek aan frontofficetokyo zijn wij interessante dingen te weten gekomen over stedenbouw in Japan. De bouwregelgeving en de levensduur van gebouwen zijn geheel anders dan hier in Nederland. Op basis van de lezing die wij bij frontoffice hebben bijgewoond, zal ik hierover wat verbazingwekkende feiten vertellen.

Koen Klinkers, medeoprichter van frontofficetokyo en tevens oud bouwkundestudent aan de TU Delft, heeft ons in zijn kantoor verteld over het stedenbouwkundig systeem van Japan en in het bijzonder van Tokyo.

Architecten in Japan hebben veel vrijheid door de niet zo strikte regelgeving. Over de toepassing van die regels kan ook nog eens gemakkelijk onderhandeld worden.

De regels lijken meer op richtlijnen dan op echte voorschriften. Dit leidt ertoe dat architecten eigenlijk (bijna) alles wel kunnen bouwen wat te bedenken valt zolang het bouwtechnisch voldoet. Tegelijkertijd staat Japan bekend als een heel geordend en gestructureerd land en daarom verraste het systeem van regelgeving ons erg.

Bovendien gelden dezelfde bouwvoorschriften voor zowel dorpen als steden. Doordat vrijwel alle regelgeving nationaal is geregeld, spelen gemeenten hierin nauwelijks een rol. De stadsgebieden worden wel opgedeeld in verschillende zones waarin bepaalde soorten gebouwen (qua hoogte en omvang) mogen staan – Tokyo is bijvoorbeeld opgedeeld in 12 zones –, maar er is geen lokale regelgeving over de welstand.

Het Japanse systeem van regelgeving is dus wel heel flexibel, maar door het ontbreken van welstandsnormen zien de straten er ordeloos uit. Dit is een groot verschil met Nederland, waar de overeenkomsten tussen verschillende huizen in een straat direct te zien zijn.

Elk gebouw wordt parametrisch ontworpen met behulp van programma’s als Rhino en Grasshopper, omdat er rekening moet worden gehouden met de daglichttoetreding voor omliggende gebouwen en het behoud van de schaal van de gebouwen. Binnen deze grenzen van het parametrisch ontwerp heeft de architect echter vrijwel onbeperkte vrijheid om te experimenteren. Als je naar de skyline van Tokyo kijkt, valt die vrijheid onmiddellijk op. Tokyo laat een enorme diversiteit aan bouwvormen zien.

Wat ons ook is opgevallen tijdens de wandelingen door de steden, is dat de straten uitzonderlijk schoon zijn. Dit is toch wel heel bijzonder, zeker voor een stad als Tokyo met meer dan 9 miljoen inwoners. Al gauw waren wij gewend aan halve dagen lopen met plastic zakjes vol vuilnis, omdat er geen prullenbakken op straat te vinden waren. In Japan eet of drinkt men niet op straat en wordt afval thuis weggegooid. Anderzijds valt op dat de gebouwen er vaak onverzorgd uit zien, door achterstallig onderhoud of doordat ze met goedkope materialen gebouwd zijn en in het ontwerp geen rekening met de buren is gehouden. Dit laatste terwijl

de afstand tot de buren vaak maar zo’n 30 cm is… Dit wordt ook wel de ‘dog run’ genoemd, een stukje verloren land. In Nederland moet er in het ontwerp wel rekening worden gehouden met het uiteindelijke straataanzicht (welstandseisen).

De gebouwhoogtes variëren constant en er lijkt geen relatie te zijn tussen gebouw en straat. Hierdoor maken de schone straten toch een chaotische indruk. Ook de verschillende functies, zoals wonen en werken, lopen door elkaar heen en rijk en arm woont naast elkaar.

De Japanners kiezen in de meeste gevallen voor slopen in plaats van renoveren. Tokyo beschikt nauwelijks over ongebruikte grond en dus moet bestaande bouw plaatsmaken voor nieuwbouw. Wanneer je een gebouw gaat plaatsen, moet je altijd in gedachten houden dat het binnen enkele jaren al weer verdwenen kan zijn.

De cultuur en het financiële systeem liggen aan deze mentaliteit ten grondslag. De traditionele Japanse huizen zijn gemaakt van hout dat brandbaar is en zijn gemakkelijk te herbouwen. Daarnaast is behoud vaak duurder dan nieuwbouw; vandaar dat de banken de voorkeur geven aan het laatste. De Japanse mentaliteit verschilt in dit opzicht zeer van de mentaliteit hier in Nederland. Gebouwen blijven vaak maximaal veertig jaar staan en hebben geen historische waarde met uitzondering van religieuze tempels. Terwijl bijvoorbeeld de Nakagin Capsule Tower een icoon is voor ons, wordt het door veel Japanners gezien als slechts ‘oud en crappy’.

Hun cultuur ligt meer in het niet tastbare en daarom is er minder belangstelling voor het behoud van zulke gebouwen. Het hoge tempo van bouwen en slopen zorgt voor een constant veranderende stad. In Nederland is het een stuk minder makkelijk om gebouwen zomaar te vervangen door nieuwbouw, bijvoorbeeld omdat omwonenden daartegen bij de rechter kunnen opkomen. Volgens de wetgeving in Japan is het altijd toegestaan een bestaand huis te slopen en een nieuw huis te plaatsen. Hierdoor lijken maar weinig gebouwen op elkaar. Bij het ontwerp van een gebouw wordt niet expliciet naar de omgeving gekeken. Dit staat in schril contrast tot de gedachte achter de ontwerpvakken op bouwkunde, waarbij er juist zo op gehamerd wordt de omgeving als uitgangspunt te nemen.

Kortom, het gaat er bij het ontwerpen en bouwen in Japan heel anders aan toe dan in Nederland. Je zult daar nooit door een straat lopen waarin ieder huis dezelfde kleur voordeur heeft of van hetzelfde soort materiaal is gemaakt. En door de korte levensduur van gebouwen blijft er altijd genoeg werk over voor architecten.//

STYLOS sCALA This year Stylos and The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment organized a design competition for all the students of this faculty. As you may have noticed, the current stairs in the BK EXPO area can use an upgrade to create more interaction and let the expositions be more lively. Students were invited to make a change and design the new stairs which would interact with the visitors and make a connection with the expositions.

The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has its own exhibition space: BK Expo. Exhibits in BK Expo include scale models, objects and scientific studies. BK Expo is located on the east side of the building, next to Espressobar Sterk. The current stairs block the view of the exposition and have no interaction with surrounding spaces. For this reason people don’t feel invited to visit the exhibit upstairs.

Participating students were asked to prepare a A1 poster and 1:20 model. A jury consisting out esteemed individuals then chose three best projects to continue the design process under supervision. This year the three groups are joining forces to come to a design that will fulfill and hopefully even exceed the expected standards of this faculty.//

MARKs KOT n a v m u r t n e c In het rk a M t n o o w Delft Zijn kamer bestaat voornamelijk uit meubels die hij zelf in elkaar heeft geklust, zoals zijn bed, kast en de planken aan de muur. De student is praktisch en vindt het leuk zijn kamer zo efficiënt mogelijk in te richten. Liever heeft hij niet te veel spullen en is zijn kamer opgeruimd. ‘Ik ruim veel op, maar maak niet vaak schoon.‘ Mark denkt vaak na over de inrichting van zijn kamer en vindt het dan ook leuk zo nu en dan meubels te verplaatsen. Huigenoten gaan voor interieuradvies naar Mark.

De inspiratie van de geometrische planken is ontstaan na een middagje Pinterest. Hij besloot naar de bouwmarkt te gaan en het kastje zelf in elkaar te zetten. Nu pronkt daar zijn bierglascollectie.

De Amsterdammer shopt graag spullen voor zijn kamer bij de kringloop. Hij is van plan om Marktplaats af te struinen voor een rokersstoel om hem daarna zelf te bekleden. ‘Soms moet je creatief zijn: een lelijke stoel kopen en bij Ikea stof halen voor 5 euro per vierkante meter, leer je ook nog een beetje naaien.’

Mark kocht grove schuttingplanken en maakte deze tot make-up plank voor zijn vriendin.

Dankzij een dagje wandelen in het bos, heeft Mark nu een kledingstok en handdoekdroger.

‘Die plank en het spiegeltje heb ik gemaakt voor mijn vriendin, zelf ga ik hier niet kijken hoe t ervoor staat, haha.!’//

D.B.S.G. Stylos photography competition

Winner In een samenwerking tussen de discussiecommissie, de pantheon//commissie en de fotocommissie van D.B.S.G. Stylos is een fotowedstrijd georganiseerd. Het thema van deze wedstrijd “Perspective” past perfect bij het thema van deze 100ste editie van de pantheon//. Joep Bastiaans is door de jury aangewezen als winnaar. Wij willen graag iedereen bedanken die een foto heeft ingestuurd, de jury heeft genoten van alle inzendingen. Daarom hebben wij besloten ook een aantal runner-ups te publiceren.

“Niet in elk land gaat architectuur over complexe, artistieke of technische uitdagingen. Soms is het bouwen van een basic ontwerp een hele uitdaging met de middelen die er voor handen zijn. Deze foto laat zien hoe Nederlandse kennis en Surinaamse ambacht samenkomen in een prachtig stuk constructie. Met lokale kennis (de jongen) lokale middelen (de stellage) en Nederlands ontwerp (de constructie) ontstaat er een voor Nederlands begrip simpel maar voor Surinaams begrip een bijzonder geavanceerd bouwwerk. Al 20 jaar flauwe woordgrappen en kritische interviews Het is oktober 1996. Bestuur 103 van D.B.S.G. Stylos is net op dreef als de eerste pantheon// uitkomt. In dat Facebook en Instagramloze tijdperk maakte Stylos altijd gebruik van een activiteitenagenda genaamd “Ogen op Styltjes”, oftewel de OOS. Of dit spreekwoord in 1996 ook al ouderwets was, of dat we ons niet realiseren dat we inmiddels meer dan 20 jaar verder zijn, is niet duidelijk. Wat wel duidelijk is, is dat flauwe woordgrappen in deze tijd al helemaal hip waren. Voor wie hem niet doorhad: ‘ogen op steeltjes hebben’ betekent verbaasd zijn over iets. Meng dit met het woord Stylos en kom tot de titel van de oude activiteitenagenda.

over het onderwijs op de faculteit en over architectuur wat resulteert in een interessant en kritisch interview.

Hertzberger vergelijkt de ontwikkeling van talent met de ontwikkeling van een plant: er is goed en slecht zaad, er is goede en slechte bodem, en er is goede en slechte verzorging. Drie factoren die te vergelijken zijn met DNA van een persoon, het milieu waarin hij geboren wordt en zijn opvoeding en opleiding. Hertzberger gokt dat ongeveer tien procent van alle bouwkundestudenten écht talent heeft, maar gelukkig zegt hij dat ook zonder talent je ‘er best nog wat van kan maken.’

Vijf leden van Stylos, waaronder de commissaris Publiciteit & Sponsoring uit het bestuur, misten iets bij deze activiteitenagenda. Als er klachten waren over het onderwijs kon men terecht bij de onderwijscommissarissen. Voor klachten over andere kwesties binnen de faculteit was echter geen plek. Deze vijf Stylosleden merkten dat zowel studenten als docenten hun mening kwijt wilden op aan een breder publiek. Zij grepen hun kans en breidden met financiële hulp van het Universiteitsfond de OOS uit tot een “overkoepelend blad voor alle richtingen binnen de faculteit Bouwkunde van D.B.S.G. Stylos.” Ze konden blijkbaar de woordgrap van de OOS niet loslaten, dus kreeg het overkoepelende blad al snel de naam “Pantheon”. En zie daar: de Pantheon was geboren! In die tijd een tweemaandelijkse uitgave van D.B.S.G. Stylos, met zowel informatieve als kritische artikelen. Een interessant verschil met de pantheon// tegenwoordig is dat toentertijd bijna niets door de commissie zelf werd geschreven, maar dat de meeste artikelen inzendingen van studenten of docenten van Bouwkunde waren.

Een andere opvallende rubriek is de ‘internetpagina’, die vergeleken kan worden met de huidige Get Inspired. Beide rubrieken staan op aan het eind van het tijdschrift en beide rubrieken zijn een digitale pagina in een gedrukt blad. In de introductie staat “Wat de hedendaagse lezer in Ogen op Stylos miste was natuurlijk een pagina over Internet.” Stylos probeert als onderdeel van de Technische Universiteit haar tijd altijd ver vooruit te zijn. Het is ironisch om te zien hoe zo’n ‘moderne’ pagina zo slordig en ouderwets vormgegeven wordt. Gelukkig weet men tegenwoordig beter met InDesign om te gaan…

Een artikelrubriek die in de eerste editie staat heeft de tijdschriftcommissie in al die 20 jaren die de Pantheon bestaat nooit losgelaten. Toen nog onder de naam “FORUM”, tegenwoordig veranderd naar het “@artikel”. De beschrijving die de commissie zelf geeft is dat het een rubriek in elke Pantheon is waarin een vooraanstaand persoon zijn of haar visie geeft op onderwerpen die het brede vakgebied van de toekomstig bouwkundig ingenieur aangaan. De eerste persoon die de commissie hiervoor had gevraagd was niemand minder dan professor Herman Hertzberger. In het artikel wordt hij geïnterviewd

Bij de tweede editie werd besloten om naast de serieuze rubrieken en inzendingen een wat ludieke rubriek te introduceren: de Stereotypes. Een smalle kolom ergens in het midden van het blad waarin eerst de vraag wordt gesteld “Wie is hij?”, daarna wordt in een kort verhaaltje iemand beschreven en aan het eind het antwoord gegeven op de vraag. Het zijn stuk voor stuk weer heerlijk ironische stukken. Hieronder volgt de eerste versie van de “stereotypen” uit de tweede editie in 1996.

Wie is hij?

Verrot en met een kater schrikt hij wakker. “Het is verdomme al kwart voor negen” ziet hij, dus snel grist hij een paar kleren uit de rotzooi op de grond en kleedt zich aan. Overal liggen volle asbakken, lege flesjes bier, pizza dozen en vuile borden oftewel, de doorsnee Jiskefet studentenkamer. Gek genoeg is in deze klerezooi niet één studieboek te bekennen, wel liggen over de hele grond verspreid zeker zes oude tentamens, waarvan minstens vier met antwoorden.

Op de tast vindt hij ook nog een kort potlood stompje dat hij haastig in zijn zak stopt. Tijd om een boterham te eten is er niet meer. Hij heeft trouwens toch al een week geen brood of beleg meer, dus wat maakt het ook uit. Snel smijt hij de deur achter zich dicht, om nog net die bus van vijf voor negen te halen.

Zeker twee volle dagen heeft hij deze keer voor het tentamen geoefend, plus nog die halve dag oude tentamens regelen en kopiëren, maar minus die vorige avond zuipen. “Gôh, dan heb ik er toch langer aan gezeten dan de vorige keer”, denkt hij bij zichzelf en hij rent naar de bushalte om wederom een tentamen in te koppen.

Hij is de bouwko.

Tjeerd Wessel Wat moet een bouwkundestudent doen om een architect met een eigen architectenbureau te worden? Wij vroegen het aan Tjeerd Wessel van Wessel van Geffen Architecten.

Hoe verliep uw opleiding en welke ervaring hebt u opgedaan tijdens die periode?

Hoe helpt de kennis/ervaring die u hebt opgedaan tijdens en naast uw opleiding u nu in uw carrière?

Ik ben begonnen op de MTS met Bouwkunde, ondanks twijfels of ik misschien in de zorg wilde werken. Na de MTS wist ik dat ik graag architect wilde worden. Daarna heb ik de HTS in Groningen gedaan en in Duitsland stage gelopen. Tijdens die stage heb ik veel geleerd, ik was jaar ‘alleen’ in een vreemd land en heb doorgekregen wat het betekent om een architectenbureau te hebben. Na de HTS heb ik doorgestudeerd aan de TU Delft. Tijdens mijn studie was ik erg actief op de faculteit, ik was bestuurslid bij Stylos, lid van de faculteitsraad, student-assistent. Daarnaast heb ik zoveel mogelijk extra oefeningen, lezingen en excursies meegepakt. Ik heb de faculteit in de volle breedte meegemaakt.

Je leert ontzettend veel van alle activiteiten die je naast je studie onderneemt. Ik heb geleerd hoe je moet omgaan met problematiek, de organisatie van evenementen, communicatie en nog veel meer. Al deze kennis en ervaring neem je mee naar elke volgende stap in je leven.

De faculteit van Bouwkunde is in onze ogen erg competitief, zouden wij hier meer moeten samenwerken aan een ontwerpopdracht?

Samenwerken kan erg prettig zijn. Iemand werpt een frisse blik op een ontwerp, hierdoor ontstaan nieuwe en vaak goede ideeën. Ook leer je hoe een ander problemen oplost. Vergeet tijdens een ontwerpopgave niet met andere studenten om je heen te praten over je eigen ontwerp en dat van een ander. Je hoeft niet direct aan een project samen te werken om van elkaar te leren.

Hoe bent u van student naar een architect met eigen bureau gegaan?

Ten slotte, wat zou u mee willen geven aan de huidige bouwkundestudenten?

Vanuit mijn opleiding kwam ik in contact met Sjoerd Soeters (PPHP), mijn afstudeerdocent kende hem goed.

Die docent heeft mij geïntroduceerd bij Sjoerd. Bij Soeters heb ik geleerd dat meerdere er meerdere manieren zijn om architectuur te maken. Dit was een echte ‘eyeopener’ voor mij. Een andere manier van werken, maar met dezelfde intensiteit en precisie. Na Soeters ben ik bij Quist Wintermans gaan werken. Bij Quist Wintermans is een andere manier van werken dan bij Soeters, dit zorgde ook voor een ander architectonisch beeld. Dit beeld paste beter bij wat ik in mijn studietijd had geleerd. Bij Soeters heb ik erg veel geleerd en die ervaring nam ik mee naar Quist Wintermans, maar je voegt je altijd in het handschrift van het bureau. Samen met een compagnon vanuit Quist Wintermans heb ik een eigen bureau opgezet. Omdat wij allebei vanuit hetzelfde bureau komen is er overeenkomst in manier van werken, maar door verschillende ervaringen hebben wij een frisse blik. Wij als bureau hebben geen vast handschrift, dit is namelijk elke opdracht weer anders en maakt ons werk divers.

Probeer je in je studietijd open te stellen om dingen te leren, wees kwetsbaar. Wees niet bang om een jaartje langer te studeren – ik kan natuurlijk niet in je portemonnee kijken – want architectuur is een “ervaringsstudie”. Loop in ieder geval een keer stage tijdens je studie en ga zoveel mogelijk mee op excursies.

Bezoek een bouwplaats! Doe naast je studie activiteiten en ontwikkel een ander deel van jezelf. Neem een kijkje bij een andere faculteit of discipline, dit geeft een frisse blik.

Wees bewust van je karakter en ambities. Probeer je studie te zien als een plek waar je je kan ontwikkelen, gebruik je vrijheid om je zo breed mogelijk te ontwikkelen. Wees ook niet bang om een keer op je bek te gaan, daar leer je ontzettend veel van! //

Als de vroegere vinex-wijken schieten ze uit de grond, vroegere industriĂŤle of verpauperde wijken die een creatieve reanimatie hebben ondergaan. Waar Rotterdam Katendrecht voorheen een plaats om te ontwijken was, is het nu de plaats om heen te gaan met initiatieven zoals de herontwikkeling van de Fenixloodsen. Ook Amsterdam heeft vele wijken nieuw leven ingeblazen: Nieuw-West met haar vele creatieve broedplaatsen, Noord met het Eye Filmmuseum als icoon en de herontwikkeling van de Hallen in de Kinkerbuurt. De grote aanvoerder op dit gebied is Berlijn, waar buurten bijna uit elkaar barsten van de creativelingen en kunstenaars. Maar waar komt al deze creativiteit opeens vandaan?

De laatste decennia ontstaat er een steeds sterker verband tussen economie en creativiteit. Onze toenemende welvaart zorgt ervoor dat mensen een steeds grotere behoefte ontwikkelen aan betekenis, magie en symboliek (Gatz, 2009). Als we naar de behoeftepiramide van Maslow kijken is dit ook helemaal geen vreemde trend, welke met name in kapitaalkrachtige landen speelt (?). Ons verlangen naar betekenis wordt vervuld door een creatieve klasse van kenniswerkers, die aan een schoen of das een symbolische meerwaarde toevoegen, en supercreatievelingen, die een heel nieuwe productieketting voeden. Laatstgenoemden bestaan uit ontwerpers, acteurs, muzikanten, etc. Wanneer een stad een kritische massa aan creatieve geesten weet te verzamelen op strategische posities in bedrijven, versterkt ze haar innovatief vermogen en haar

Walking on the Národní-Mikulandská Street in Prague you do not fully realize you are walking on the border of two very different parts of the city. On one side there is the old town founded in the 12th century and on the other side there is the new town established around 1350. And even though those two parts of the city were founded 150 years apart, the architecture doesn’t differ tremendously: most buildings on both sides look quite similar. But halfway past the street one building stands out: The DRN Building. At first you only see the extravagant steel and glass façade, which attracts the attention of the people passing by. Remarkably, the façade is just one of the extraordinary parts of the building. When looking closely you might notice the small passage with wooden beams hanging from the ceiling. It leaves you wondering why one might hang a wooden beam on ropes in a passage. It’s your curiosity that makes you wander into the passage. You’re not fully comfortable since the passage can be closed with a fence and you are probably the only one walking there. The passage leads you past an open glass façade on one side and a more closed brick wall on the other side. This is the first sign of the two worlds integrated in the building. Behind the glass façade you see an open space decorated like you haven’t seen before. A woman sits behind a desk which seems to be made of old rooftiles. When you get past this first uneasiness and dare to walk further you arrive in a small enclosed courtyard. The first thing you notice is the discrepancy in materials and appearance between what seems to be two buildings. The contrast between glass and stone like materials makes you wonder what might be behind these walls but unfortunately the building isn’t accessible to the public yet. Thus, let’s give you an insight of what is behind those open and closed walls and will let you in on more secrets of this project.

The plot where the DRN building arose was the last plot in de city center of Prague which hadn’t been filled in. The plot came with a historical palace and a permit for a hotel.

Due to a decrease in tourists in Prague the plan to build a hotel was transformed into a plan for a multifunctional building, which would be more successful. On the first floor a few shops will be positioned. The courtyard will be a place for visitors to come together and for the citizens of Prague to have some peace. A small part of

the courtyard will be used for the presentation of Czech Design. In the center of the small courtyard a big tree will be placed on an old well.

You enter the building through the glass façade in the passage. When entering the practically empty space there is enough to look at. The walls, floor and ceiling are intriguing. Everything is made from concrete, but nothing is the same. The concrete has different colors and different textures are applied. The concrete wall on the westside of the building had to be poured in different phases, otherwise the wall of the adjacent building might not have been able to support the weight. The architect and artist saw this as an opportunity to create

a piece of art. Instead of giving each concrete pouring the same color they decided to embrace the ‘setback’ and give every batch a different color. But not only the use of different colors makes the walls special. During the construction of the walls objects and plants were pressed into the concrete to create new kinds of textures and to incorporate things like floor level signs in a nonconventional way.

When walking up the concrete stairs, which seem to be different on each level, you arrive on the floors where soon offices will be opening. The floor plans are flexible to allow for variation. When you arrive on the top floor a circular stair takes you even higher. Finally, you arrive

on the roof of the building which leaves you amazed. A whole green landscape is created on top of the building.

In the spring lots of small flowers are bedded in the grass hills, creating a contrast with all the concrete and glass of the building. From the roof you have a grand view on both the old and new town. You can also look down into the courtyard. That is when you become aware that the façade around the whole building is covered with greenery which changes throughout the year. During the construction the building was called Palác Národní, but throughout the process the name was changed to DRN building, meaning greenery in Czech. The name does the building right with its green roof and fairly green façade.

When leaving the roof, you think you have seen the whole building, but surprisingly a small stair on the highest office floor takes you to a whole different part of the building. When you look around you realize this can’t be the same building and suddenly you are in the old palace which has been on the plot since 1726.

The wooden beams of the ceilings are covered with paintings from the 17th century and are restored just like some other historical elements. The parts which were taken out are used in the new part of the building.

Offices will be opening soon in this part of the building.

One part of the building we haven’t visited yet are the four underground floors. Three floors are used for parking and the top floor is used as an office. The floors underground have a very different character than the floors above the ground level. The underground floors are designed with bright colors and even the parking looks like a piece of art. One of the parking floors is completely white with blue hand and footprints of kids leading the way to your car. The completely black parking exit forms a contrast with all the colors.

The building is a world of contrasts: contrast in color use, contrasts in materials, contrasts in textures. But one of the most obvious contrasts is the one between the old and new part. However, the glory of this contrast between the old and new part has been tucked away behind a small door. Just like the contrast between the old and new town outside is hidden.//

Living inside a mushroom, a pig or a plastic bottle?

Unusual materials with a promising future

Materialization, one of the most important aspects in an architectural project. Materialization of the loadbearing structure or the façade is one of the things that can make your project extraordinary. But the wrong use of a specific material can also downgrade your whole design. However, as an architecture student you can only learn so much about materials. Which mostly limits us to the use of common materials like wood, steel and concrete for the loadbearing structure and bricks and glass for the façade. Yet, there are way more interesting materials for grabs: especially in this century of innovation. In this article four innovative materials are discussed.

In vitro meat In the future you might be living inside of a pig. This might sound weird but no worries for the vegetarians and vegans amongst us: no animals were harmed in the process of making a meat home. Meat cells are grown in laboratories for the buildings. Until today only scale models have been made but the concept gives an insight of how meat cells could replace traditional building materials. The cells are 3D printed in all sorts of shapes. Sodium Benzonate is added for the preservation but also to kill yeast, bacteria and fungi. This makes the meat last for a fairly long time.

The sight of the scale models isn’t very attractive but the idea itself is quite interesting. Envision walls made from tissue, bones and skin which will replace insulation and where muscles function as windows which can open and close by themselves.

41 Mushroom-brick The organic biodegradable bricks consist of farm waste and a fungus which grows in a brick-shaped mold. The bricks are made of corn stalks and the fungus makes sure the corn stalks stay together. Corn stalk doesn’t have another function otherwise and would just go to waste, which makes the bricks very sustainable. The bricks are grown in five days and can then be stacked to create a structure. One brick can carry the weight of multiple cars. The fabrication of the bricks leaves no waste, no input of energy is required and there are no carbon emissions.

After using the bricks, they can be composted and can be turned into fertilizer.

For now, the bricks haven’t been used in big architectural projects. However, MoMa in New York did construct three interwoven towers from the bricks. It’s not likely that the mushroom bricks will replace steel or concrete anytime soon, but the towers showed that there might be a future.

Cardboard Cardboard, everyone has heard of it but most of us see it as a useless material which you throw away as soon as you take your purchased item out of the box. However, cardboard can be used for more useful purposes including architectural purposes.

For example, after the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand the cathedral was destroyed. Yet a place was needed for the victims to be honored. Shigura Ban came with the idea to create a church with cardboard as main material. The church is constructed from cardboard tubes which are coated with a waterproof and a flame-retardant material. The cardboard tubes support the polycarbonate roof. The church has a life span of 50 years and will replace the cathedral until a new cathedral emerges. A big plus of the structure is that the cardboard is not likely to be affected in case of another earthquake. Another benefit was that within a month after the earthquake the church was ready to be used.

Used plastic bottles Like cardboard everyone uses plastic bottles. Nevertheless, plastic bottles and all other plastics are a huge environmental issue. A lot of the plastic isn’t recyclable and ends up in landfills or even worse: in the ocean. However, it could serve a better cause. Studio Klimoski Chang Architects used 53.780 plastic bottles to create a pavilion: 53.780 is the exact number of plastic bottles that is thrown away every hour in New York. The used bottles were collected from offices, schools and businesses throughout the course of a few months. Each bottle is filled with a different amount of water and blue coloring. The exterior is completely made out of big plastic jugs. The pavilion is shaped like a cloud and has the fitting name: Heads in the Clouds. It’s a place where New Yorkers can put their head in the clouds and rest in a chaotic city. The pavilion not only stands for all the plastic bottles that are thrown each day but also hopes to inspire others to create structures with used products or plastic bottles.

Dare to experiment with unknown materials and try to do your own research instead of always falling back to the usual materials. //

MILJOENEN bezoekers

maar... nog... steeds...

Als je leest dat een plein 2,5 miljoen bezoekers per jaar heeft, zou je zeggen dat het redelijk succesvol is. Het doel van een openbare ruimte is immers dat de ruimte bezocht en gebruikt wordt. Toch vinden veel mensen het Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam, dat inderdaad zoveel bezoekers per jaar heeft, een verschrikkelijk plein. Het Project for Public Spaces zet het plein zelfs in de top tien van lelijkste pleinen ter wereld. Gelukkig hebben verschillende partijen dit nu door en zijn er steeds meer plannen om het plein te verbeteren. Het Schouwburgplein is altijd een lege vlakte geweest. Nu hoeft dit niet per se niet negatief te zijn. Het plein heeft een halve eeuw relatief succesvol gefungeerd terwijl er weinig te doen was. Hoe kan het dat het de laatste twintig jaren iedereen opeens wegblijft?

bij een nieuw buitenruimte plan van Rotterdam, vier jaar na de oplevering van het plein. In dit buitenruimte plan waren vier ruimtelijke hoogtepunten voor het centrum vastgesteld: de Boompjeskade, het Museumpark, de Binnenrotte en het Schouwburgplein. Bij de projecten was er al veel opgelost met wat nieuwe stoepstenen en een aantal extra plantenbakken, maar bij het Schouwburgplein bleek er meer nodig. Daarom heeft West8 zelf nog een aantal aanpassingen gedaan zoals meer trappen en ander materiaal, maar zonder veel resultaat.

Ruim 60 jaar na ontstaan van het plein was het nog steeds een doorn in het oog. Overdag werd het niet gebruikt en ’s avonds was er veel overlast. De voorzieningen rond

Het plein was onderdeel van het Wederopbouwplan van Cornelis van Traa in 1945. Het werd een oase van rust in het nieuwe moderne centrum. Kinderen konden spelen in de pierenbadjes, ouders konden vertoeven op de terrassen bij de paviljoens. In de jaren 60 werd onder het plein een parkeergarage aangelegd. Hierdoor verdwenen de auto’s van het plein, maar hiermee ook meteen de bomen en begroeiing. Op het dak van de garage kunnen geen bomen worden geplaatst in verband met het gewicht. Toen in de jaren negentig het dak begon te lekken, greep de Gemeente Rotterdam haar kans om het plein hevig op de schop te gooien. West 8, het landschapsarchitectuurbureau van Adriaan Geuze, kreeg de opdracht om een nieuw ontwerp te maken. Hieruit volgde inderdaad een volledige gedaanteverandering. Het meest opvallend zijn de kraanachtige grote rode lampen die gebruikers zelf kunnen verstellen. West 8 vindt het plein een reflectie van de Haven van Rotterdam door de ruwe materialen en stoere meubels. Een ander opmerkelijk kenmerk is het feit dat het hele plein een stukje is opgetild, waardoor er een “stadspodium” ontstaat. Het idee was dat er zo een flexibele interactieve openbare ruimte zou ontstaan.

Het resultaat is echter het tegenovergestelde. Door de verhoging voelt het plein ontoegankelijk en door de ruwe materialen heeft het een kille sfeer. Volgens Project for Public Spaces is het Schouwburgplein “het perfecte voorbeeld van hoe een design-statement nog geen goed plein maakt.” Dat het plan van West 8 niet werkte was al snel duidelijk. Daarom werd het plein in 2000 al betrokken Schouwburgplein vroeger

maar... nog... steeds... het plein en de omwonenden waren dit zat en richtten de Vereniging Verenigd Schouwburgplein op. Hierdoor werd er veel gestructureerder omgegaan met het plein.

Samen met de Gemeente heeft de vereniging ervoor gezorgd dat er nu een tijdelijke kunstgrasmat ligt en grote plantenbakken staan. Dit werkt ontzettend goed en trekt een groot publiek aan. “Er liggen zelfs zoenende stelletjes in de bosjes,” zegt Karin van der Spek van de Vereniging Verenigd Schouwburgplein. Helaas is deze kunstgrasmat tijdelijk, en bovendien, is het niet valsspelen om van een plein een park te maken om het goed te laten werken?

Kort gezegd is het plein een plek die verschillende partijen door de jaren heen tevergeefs hebben geprobeerd op te knappen. Volgens Sebastiaan Gribling is dat ook de

leeg... stedelijke betekenis van het plein. “Het kent geen specifiek gebruik, maar ondergaat een continue metamorfose,” schrijft hij in zijn artikel. Nu is de vraag, hoe gaat het verder? Zet de Vereniging Verenigd Schouwburgplein door en wordt het een broeipot van locale initiatieven? Blijft de Gemeente Rotterdam proberen het aan te passen met trappetjes en bankjes? Of is er een volledig nieuwe blik nodig om dit plein eindelijk een keer te laten slagen?//

Afgelopen jaar was de de tweede Exchange die vanuit Stylos werd georganiseerd. Dit maakt de Exchangecommissie de jongste commissie van Stylos. Met de vijf commissieleden hebben we geprobeerd om een fantastisch evenement neer te zetten. Hieronder volgt een reisverslag waarin we laten zien hoe leerzaam, maar ook hoe leuk een uitwisseling met een andere universiteit kan zijn.

Het was maandagochtend 5 februari en de Exchange naar Polen stond op het punt te beginnen. Zwetend en stressend stond de commissie op het vliegveld van Eindhoven te wachten op alle deelnemers. Er waren zoveel dingen die fout konden gaan!

Gelukkig ging alles zoals gepland en kwam iedereen veilig aan in Gdansk. Nu was het spannende moment aangekomen: buddy meets buddy. Zouden we beste vrienden worden of zouden we ons een hele week doodergeren?

In de loop van de week hebben we op iedere mogelijke manier de Poolse cultuur leren kennen. De universiteiten van Delft en Gdansk zijn anders, maar ook de mensen verschillen van elkaar. De manier waarop de Poolse studenten met ontwerpen omgaan en architectuur benaderen is een wereld van verschil met hoe wij het doen. We hebben een workschop gevolgd en de stad Gdansk verkend. Maar we hadden het vooral ook heel gezellig met de groep.

Zodra we thuis kwamen gingen wij hard aan de slag om een onvergetelijke week te organiseren voor onze Poolse buddies.

Delft

De maandag van de uitwisselingsweek begon goed: wij moesten meer dan 30 tasjes vullen met TU Delft-goodies voor onze Poolse buddies. Daarna reisden we naar het legendarische vliegveld van Eindhoven, waar de Polen gelijk de prachtige architectuur van Nederland konden bewonderen (de ingestorte parkeergarage). Gelukkig was het in Nederland veel warmer dan in Polen, het bleef de hele week meer dan 30 graden.

Nadat we de Polen hadden opgehaald, was het weer tijd voor de ontmoeting van de buddies. De gasten kregen een prachtige ruime slaapplek van wel 2 m2 in de bezemkast.

Vervolgens hebben wij de Poolse studenten Delft, Rotterdam en Amsterdam laten zien. Ook hebben zij de rijke cultuur van de Bouwpub ontdekt. Maar het hoogtepunt van de hele week bleek toch wel het proeven van de cakejes uit Amsterdam.

Zaterdag sloten we de week af op het station van Delft, waar we de Poolse studenten uitzwaaiden. Daarna doken we gelijk ons bed weer in, ontzettend moe, maar ongelofelijk tevreden, omdat we zeker wisten dat wij iedereen een geweldige week hebben bezorgd.//

The average person today has access to seemingly unlimited fonts - and with such great power comes great responsi-bility. One can use Curlz MT on a resume or Brush Script for a party invitation, but should one?

Though trained de-signers might have a clear idea of the best fonts for each task, most of us laymen are reduced to guesswork, instinct and the guidance of edicts like “never use Comic Sans.”

But this prohibitive attitude toward font freedom doesn’t necessarily serve us well. At least that’s the argument of Douglas Thomas, the author of Never Use Futura - a celebratory new history of the iconic font, which does not actu-ally condemn all uses of Futura.

“I decided to use the title in part as a provocation, and as an ironic commentary on how most of the conversation around fonts people have is housed in a negative,” Thomas told HuffPost in a phone interview. “People know not to use Comic Sans and maybe Papyrus - those are things you just shouldn’t do. But very rarely do people understand why they should use a typeface.”

The full title of his book, Thomas pointed out, is actually Never Use Futura Unless You Are ... followed by a long list of famous people, brands and organizations that do use the typeface. (A few of the notable Futura users, listed on the front and back of his book, include: Nike, Fox News, Ikea, Vanity Fair, Politico, Forever 21 and In-N-Out.) “I’m hoping to poke a little fun at that sort of conversation - designers can say, ‘oh, the masses shouldn’t use Futura, but we can, in these ways,’” he added.
