PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, As part of our line of business, one of the topics of discussion is the future of print magazines in the digital age. I firmly believe that great content will always matter. No matter how time changes the magazine industry, it is the unchanging desire of readers to stay culturally informed and fashionably styled that keeps us going. From my frequent visits to newsstands, I’ve noticed that high-end magazines— especially those who cover the luxury lifestyle—are going strong, and might even be stronger than ever. Only those who can deliver the never-ending cravings of the wealthy for the new and exciting will prosper and rise. We at Orlando Style understand that, partly because we are fortunate enough to live this lifestyle. We are one of you, and you are one of us. We know that there are the Millennials — the trendsetting youth who get most of their information and seek their guilty pleasures via their mobile devices. We have not forgotten you! To deliver our publication in a way that meets everyone right where they are, we have embarked on an adventurous new project: our newly redesigned website and our expanded social media feed. It’s everything you Millennials have always wanted in a magazine experience, with exciting newsfeeds and videos on our StyleTV portion of our website. We have also included our new “Shopping Cart” feature, where you can find fun fashion trends through our sourcing of wellpriced and hip clothes. Happy shopping! Let us know what you think so we can make your Style experience even better. Speaking of fashion, this year’s September issue is a reflection of the Fall Fashion styles for the season. Discover a great monochrome fashion spread with sophisticated looks, such as the uniquely ‘Moschino’ line and some other great designers. This issue is definitely a must-buy for this autumn season. Equally sophisticated is our look at those professionals you want to trust when you need them… the Legal Elite, a great collection of Orlando’s finest Attorneys. Please give us your feedback on your experience of hiring a counselor at law. My hope is that this issue inspires you, takes you places you haven’t been before, and makes you feel good. Email me and let me know! And one more thing… Don’t forget to register to vote! November is coming, along with election season. Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode Publisher

CITY NEWS

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! Style Events, News & Gossip From Around the City By Riesa Pascal Welcome back friends! It’s been a long two months since Orlando Style’s Summer Double Issue was released. Now fall has arrived (can you believe it?) and it’s time for us to recap all the good times this city had in July and August. We’ve got all the highlights for you, just in case you missed it! On the first Friday of every month, Baldwin Park host their Festival and Art Stroll at the Baldwin Park Village Center. July 1st was no different as more than 60 local artisans from all genres came out to display their artwork. Visitors shopped and strolled through the heart of downtown Baldwin Park during the family and pet-friendly event. The Festival and Art Stroll also featured many Central Florida based small businesses and nonprofit organizations with products and offerings ranging from health and fitness to beauty, fashion and plenty of community service opportunities. July also brought about the kickoff of Lakeridge Winery’s Summer Music Series and it was well worth the anticipation! From July 2nd-30th, Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards hosted a live outdoor concert every 14 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CITY NEWS

Saturday afternoon. The Summer Music Series featured local musicians each weekend that kept the crowd singing and dancing along to their high energy entertainment. As always, award-winning Lakeridge wines, beer, soft drinks and a variety of food were available for purchase along with complimentary parking, admission, Winery tours and tastings. We never fail to overstuff ourselves on the Fourth of July so it makes perfect sense to start Independence Day off with a little exercise! On July 4th, runners from all skill levels joined their friends, family and neighbors for the Watermelon 5K. The early morning celebration featured plenty of ice cold watermelon and American pride as participants raced a 5K around the city of Winter Park. Proceeds from participants benefitted the Track Shack Foundation, a local, 501c(3) organization that promotes health and fitness with an emphasis on youth programs. For over 20 years, Red Hot & Boom has been the Independence Day celebration to end all celebrations! Each year the lively party returns with louder music, more fun and bigger explosions. Sponsored by the City of Altamonte Springs and XL 106.7 FM, Red Hot & Boom is the largest Independence Day celebration in Central Florida. Cranes Roost Park was a sea of red, white and blue as attendees gathered to enjoy vendor booths, food, drinks and live music from nationally and internationally known entertainers. The grand finale of the event was a 25-minute fireworks display, synchronized with a mix of patriotic and today’s musical hits. From July 8th-August 6th, Aquatica heated things up with their all-new Island Nights beach party. The event was presented by Coca-Cola and took place every Friday and Saturday evening at SeaWorld’s beloved waterpark. Guests enjoyed the entertainment of live DJs, dancing on the beach and an evening menu sizzling with flavor. The party zone area helped attendees to step into the center of the action with various interactive games, live music and awesome prizes. Free admission to the Island Nights beach party was included with all regular admission to Aquatica.

Downtown. The ‘Form in Light’ exhibition featured works by photographers Drew Doggett and Luis Lazo. Admission was free and attendees turned out from all around Orlando to enjoy visions of beauty in nature, habitat and urbanism. Also on view at Snap’s OG1 Gallery was ‘Dans la Nature’ (In Nature) featuring works by Tom Chambers, Elicia Edijanto, Martin Stranka. Meanwhile, visitors to the OG2 Gallery enjoyed the ‘Intersection’ exhibition featuring works by Michael Rothwell. Refreshing cocktails were provided by The Courtesy Bar and DJ Nigel John kept the energy up all through the night. The ‘Form in Light’ exhibition is running until October 1st so don’t forget to swing by! Dust off your corsages, prom is back! Orlando’s charitable organization, Mel’s Bad Girls Club (MBGC) has celebrated “Prom” for the last nine years for the benefit of B.A.S.E Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation. On August 13th, MBGC held their 10th Annual Prom at the Orchid Garden in Downtown Orlando and celebrated a decade of giving back. It was a chance for adults to experience Prom just like it was in high school but with spiked cocktails and no curfew! Ticket holding attendees experienced a Silent Auction, gorgeous handmade decorations, sinful desserts, entertainment by The MBGC Band, a live DJ and much more! August 29th kicked off the start of what is arguably a favorite time for many in Central Florida thanks to Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month! From August 29th-October 2nd, Orlando’s amazing culinary scene is being celebrated with select restaurants offering three-course, prix fixe dinners at the exceptional value of just $33 per person. The three-course culinary celebration includes the choice of a tasty appetizer, a mouthwatering entree and a decadent dessert from the Magical Dining Month menu. With more than 70 of Central Florida’s top restaurants participating, those who are taking advantage of the incredible deal are sure to indulge! One dollar from each meal will be donated to The Russell Home for atypical children.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

When expatriate novelist Ernest Hemingway arrived in Key West in 1928,

his items of business included obtaining a spare apartment with his second wife, making a name for himself in the bars among Duval Street, and finishing the painstaking process of perfecting what would become one of America’s greatest novels, A Farewell to Arms. Perhaps your own aspirations of a stay in Key West may not be as legendary as those of the world-travelled writer, but there’s one thing Hemingway and every potential Key West tourist have in common: a thirst for life and a town that can quench it. Today, you can explore the treasure of Hemingway’s Key West in the modern luxury that now outlines the city; historical buildings now house sights and sounds of Florida’s present, while new shops and experiences still ring of traditions past. A relaxing getaway to The Gates Hotel provides for a calming atmosphere to enjoy a weekend, or a couple of weeks in beautiful Key West with all of its new and old world charm. Located at the point of entry to Key West, The Gates Hotel is a classic take on the unique culture and stunning beauty of the ocean-laced city. The secluded location only adds to the relaxing flair of the hotel, and trolley rides from the hotel are available to take you straight to Duval street and the center of Key West excitement. Celebrating local art and modern architecture, sophistication finds its way into every square inch of The Gates. The boutique aesthetic of the lobby creates an intimate escape to relax after a day discovering the island. Calming neutral tones and ocean colors captivate guests in a sea of serenity, while modern accents cool off adventures after a long day in the sand and sun. Minimalism is taken to the next level at The Gates as natural elements create a subtle space for guests to escape from the business of daily life, featured in wooden wall design, ethereal flooring, and thoughtful use of graceful hues. Lazy afternoons in the Florida heat are given an air of elegance at The Gates private pool, an oasis of relaxation not far from the hotel’s dining and drinking options. Take a dip with a drink in hand as quiet hours spent poolside turn into romantic memories of paradise.

Just a few steps takes you to Rum Row, The Gates’ well-stocked bar, where you can sip on tastes of Key West such as a variety of rum-soaked cocktails. Also outside, the Blind Pig offers delicious and healthy options on location in a food truck-style experience. Enjoy cuisine inspired by Key West’s eclectic tastes of Caribbean, Cuban, and Floridian culture in the form of small bites and tapas. In true Key West fashion, The Gates fills each room with work from award winning photographer Jorge de la Torriente of De La Gallery. His work captures the vibrancy of journeying to new destinations of nature and beauty.

FROM RUM AND CIGARS TO SEAFOOD AND THE CITY, THERE’S AN ENDLESS BOUNTY FOR YOU TO DISCOVER IN KEY WEST. Jorge de la Torriente’s work found in The Gates can be enjoyed at De La Gallery, where modern exposition of color meets timeless island culture. The gallery has become a locally-renowned site on Duval Street. This road is a work of art itself, lined with buildings that could tell as many stories as only Hemingway could write. The Hemingway favorite Sloppy Joe’s Bar may be the most famous location on Duval, but many new eateries have raised the bar in Key West. Nine One Five restaurant and wine bar offers an elegant place to enjoy a glass or bottle of beautiful wine, exciting cocktails and delicious cuisine while taking in the excitement of the island’s late nights. If you prefer a more Hemingway-esque drink, your Key West adventure must include a stop to the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery and chat with founder/distiller Paul Menta who embodies quintessential Key West. This distillery combines the best flavors to bring thirsty travelers delicious white rums, made with Florida sugar cane and infused with the flavors of coconut, creme brûlée, and key lime. Their specialty rums are distilled six times filtering out fusel oils that result in headaches to ensure that your drinking experience is unlike any other. The distillery’s rum can also be enjoyed right at The Gates Hotel’s Rum Row Bar. 19 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

When Hemingway wasn’t busy writing, if rum was in one hand, it was probable that a cigar was in the other. Keep the traditional Key West experience going with a trip to Rodriguez Cigar Factory, where Danny DiFabio, grandson of the late Angel Rodriguez, now heads up the family’s Key West operation, and where his grandmother, Daniela Rodriguez, still hand rolls hundreds of cigars each day. You can get a taste for exceptional hand-rolled cigars made with cured and aged vintage tobacco leaves in the authentic Cuban style. Founded in Key West in 1984, the factory is the oldest operating cigar manufacturer in town, allowing guests to enjoy a variety of cigars in the cigar garden, a picturesque locale for those craving to breathe in a breath of Hemingway’s Key West. A few puffs of a hand-rolled cigar might get you in the mood for adventure, and Fury Water Adventures offers catamaran tours fit for whatever you fancy. Chill the night away on a sunset tour, or excite your toes with a trip on Fury’s glass bottom boat as marine life swims right below your view. Perhaps a bit of a closer perspective is what you’re looking for in your ocean adventure. If that’s the case, visit SUP Key West, where you can have an exciting stand up paddleboard tour of the Key West backcountry. Get up close and personal with wildlife as you take a look at tropical fish, sea stars, and jellyfish, as well as different species of aquatic birds. Even learn from the best with customized paddleboard lessons. For seekers of the time-honored tradition of soaking up the adventurous life, there’s no place on the island quite like COAST. Partnering with The Gates Hotel, COAST offers a blend of land and sea in a variety of activities for Key West enthusiasts, from bike tours to art classes. COAST’s Stock Rock ’N Roll bicycle tours are an authentic way to take in the joys of Key West’s laid-back personality. (Just note: It gets very hot in the summer months, so if you can’t take the heat do it when the weather is cooler!) This tour includes a stop at The Key West Botanical Garden and takes travelers to Stock Island. TECH

ARE WE PROGRAMMING OUR OWN EXTINCTION? THE RISE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE By Gina Ritch

24 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TECH

As 2016 advances, artificial intelligence

“intelligent machines” eventually become capable of vetoing human judgement? At the current rate, that is exactly what can happen. Similarly to the way humankind outsmarted the Neanderthal, A.I. could eventually outsmart humankind. While A.I. is still in its beginning stages of development, researchers are looking into precautions that will protect and keep humans in control.

Intelligent software and algorithms learn at a much faster rate than humans, and software is now being coded in a way that is not simply dumping massive amounts of data into the program, but creating software in which a computer can actually learn on its own, similar to our own learning habits -through trial and error. By playing endless rounds of games, watching hours of videos, and sorting through countless amounts of data, computers learn languages, identify objects, and make predictions at an alarmingly rapid rate.

This concern for A.I. safety is what led Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, and Sam Altman, president of Y-Combinator, to fund and operate the billion-dollar, non-profit research company, Open A.I. Musk has long called artificial intelligence our “biggest existential threat” and this nonprofit is his way of safeguarding our future from that peril. The institution’s main purpose is making A.I. research, learning, and patents freely available to any programmer that wants to take part in Deep Learning. Most importantly, it is to create a positive influence that benefits humanity by making it open and avA.I.lable to share technological advances. As A.I. slowly moves towards human-level thought processes and capabilities, this organization is building a platform for future A.I. exploration to create the best possible outcome. Open A.I. is seeking to put the power of Deep Learning into the hands of everyone that is interested in learning it, for free. Being non-profit, with no shareholder obligations, it is solely used for the betterment and bringing value to society. As with any new venture, there are skeptics to this free, machine-learning research institution. Speculators worry about those who seek to use their Open A.I. instructed robots for harm. Open A.I. founders believe, however, that those using this technology for good will significantly overshadow those using it for harm. The alternative to all the brilliant minds behind Open A.I. working for free sharing, would be billion-dollar corporations, like Google and Facebook, monopolizing the super-intelligence without sharing their advancements. Elon Musk and Open A.I. researchers believe that making this information free and readily available will help control this advanced technology, before it becomes out of control. Fingers crossed.

(A.I.) is exploding with interest in what seems like all scientific fields. Digital giants like Google, Microsoft, and Apple are at every technological gathering discussing the development and the future of A.I. This technology, still in its infancy, is evolving faster than ever and is being adopted quickly into society, whether we like it or not.

The first wave of A.I. is already plugged into our connected world. Social media sites scan through our searches, likes, and posts, creating profiles of us to feed us appealing advertisements. Our personal devices recommend friends and anticipate what we are going to search for cued by only a couple of words. At times, the suggestions and predictions our gadgets give us are so on target, it can be a little scary. Do our digital agents know us better than we know ourselves? Digital assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Amazon’s Alexa are now increasingly sophisticated and high-tech. Apple is making big changes with their new iOS 10 update this fall and is opening up Siri to app developers for the very first time. Through third party apps, Siri will soon be activated to assist in more tasks than ever before. Voice commands like paying a bill, calling an Uber, or looking up directions will soon be understood and carried out much more accurately. For the medical fields, A.I. may be a key factor in future cures. Algorithms will be assisting in future technology that will predict cancer sooner, and will hopefully solve many medical mysteries using A.I. software’s non-stop pattern recognition and tireless learning. Intelligent computers may benefit the scientific and medical realms, but is it possible to stop these agents from learning too much? Movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey and I, Robot allow for paranoid thoughts of our digital assistants becoming out of hand and ultimately spelling out our doom. Is it possible that famed futurist Ray Kurzweil’s term,

H YPERCAR A s t o n M a r t i n A M - R B 0 0 1 H y p e rc a r Reichman and Newey are working closely on all aspects of the project, striving to ensure the AM-RB 001 is an unprecedented fusion of form and function: a car engineered to be entirely useable and enjoyable as a road car, but with the capability to perform like no road car before it on a race track. For those who crave an even more intensely focused driving experience, a track-only AM-RB 001 is also in development, the projected performance of which is in line with that of today’s LMP1 Le Mans sports prototypes.

Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing are today revealing their ground-breaking hypercar; codenamed AM-RB 001.

The product of a unique Innovation Partnership between the British luxury brand and eminent F1TM team, this ambitious, uncompromising and wholly extraordinary collaboration combines the vision and skills of two world-leading brands to create a road car the like of which has never been seen before.

Built around a lightweight carbon fibre structure, the AMRB 001 boasts truly radical aerodynamics for unprecedented levels of downforce in a road-legal car. Thanks to the genius of Newey’s design much of this downforce is generated through underfloor aerodynamics, leaving Reichman free to craft a pure yet breathtaking dramatic form that elegantly expresses both the AMRB 001’s cutting-edge dynamism and the unmistakable essence of Aston Martin.

The three men charged with realising this shared vision are Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer and the world’s most successful F1TM designer, Marek Reichman, Aston Martin EVP and Chief Creative Officer and David King, VP and Chief Special Operations Officer. Together they spearhead a formidable alliance. One that combines more than a hundred years of specialism – both with heritage, making some of the world’s most beautiful and charismatic GT cars, and with technological brilliance and relentless pursuit of speed and efficiency that has seen Red Bull Racing excel in the ferociously competitive world of Formula One.

Uncompromising in all respects, the AM-RB 001 is a bespoke machine from the tires up. It will be built by David King and 26

While boundary-pushing performance is clearly of paramount importance, so too is exceptional efficiency and packaging. Newey’s unrivalled knowledge has enabled the AM-RB 001 to be extremely light and compact, yet offer genuine comfort and space for driver and passenger and house a V12 engine.

Revolutionary AM-RB 001 hypercar the result of technical partnership between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing Powered by a new, high-revving naturally aspirated V12 engine Mid-engined, two-seats, lightweight construction, 1:1 power-to-weight ratio Road and track-only versions to be available

his team at Gaydon, in the purpose-built facility created for Aston Martin’s original hypercar, the One-77. More details of the AM-RB 001’s technical specification will be revealed in due course, but its heart is a new, mid-mounted, high-revving, naturally aspirated V12 engine with the potency to achieve a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio; 1 bhp per kilo of weight. To cope with the extreme aerodynamic loadings at high speeds yet deliver the onroad usability and comfort levels that sit at the heart of the concept, the AM-RB 001’s suspension system will feature innovative technology and employ principles honed by Newey over his thirty year career. Likewise, the transmission is a clean-sheet design conceived by Newey and developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies.

Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing’s Chief Technical Officer, says of the AM-RB 001 project: “I’ve long harboured the desire to design a road car. The formation of Red Bull Advanced Technologies brought me a step closer to realising that ambition, but I believed we should work with an automotive manufacturer. Aston Martin was at the top of my list. The synergy between Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin is clear. I knew Red Bull Racing had the ability to handle the pure performance aspects, but Aston Martin’s experience of making beautiful, fast and comfortable GT cars is of great benefit to the project. I’ve always been adamant that the AM-RB 001 should be a true road car that’s also capable of extreme performance on track, and this means it really has to be a car of two characters. That’s the secret we’re trying to put into this car - the technology that allows it to be docile and comfortable, but with immense outright capabilities.” David King, Aston Martin’s VP and Chief Special Operations Officer, adds: “Working at Aston Martin means you get to be a part of some truly special projects, but the AM-RB 001 is a dream - a true once-in-alifetime opportunity. Of course it’s a huge engineering challenge, too, but the gamechanging objectives of this programme have a uniquely energising effect on everyone involved. We have world-class people and facilities at Gaydon. We’re all motivated to achieve great things and take Aston Martin to the absolute pinnacle of road car performance.” Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, says of the AM-RB 001: “Working so closely alongside Adrian and an organisation like Red Bull Racing is a fabulous experience. By definition the objectives we’ve set for the car ensures there has never been an Aston Martin - or any car, actually - quite like the AM-RB 001. The shared challenge has been finding that magical tipping point where we achieve the most efficient engineering solutions and the most beautiful styling solutions without

27 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

any compromises. My personal challenge has been expressing the AM-RB 001’s extraordinary performance and the unique way in which it delivers that performance. Its style reflects its revolutionary nature, while possessing the form and beauty that makes it unmistakably an Aston Martin.” Dr Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and CEO, commented: “The AM-RB 001 is a truly remarkable project and something of which I’m extremely proud. To have Aston Martin working alongside Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing and the invaluable assistance of project partner AF Racing AG is an extraordinary creative collaboration. One that unites the very best of road and race car thinking. As the project gathers pace its clear the end result will be a truly history-making hypercar that sets incredible new benchmarks for packaging, efficiency and performance and an achievement that elevates Aston Martin to the very highest level.” Christian Horner, Team Principal, Red Bull Racing said: “Red Bull Racing has always steered an innovative course in our ongoing development of a competitive Formula One car. The conception and modus operandi of Red Bull Technologies has been to apply our expertise to truly progressive projects and partnerships. Our relationship with Aston Martin and the realisation of the AM-RB 001 is pioneering and borne of our synergies and desire to break new ground. The AM-RB 001 is the inspirational product of this collaborative spirit.” Continuing the on-going Innovation Partnership, the task of engineering the AM-RB 001 will be shared between Q by Aston Martin Advanced and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, with production taking place at Aston Martin’s Gaydon facility. Total volume will be between 99 and 150 road cars inclusive of all remaining prototypes and 25 track-only versions, with first deliveries commencing in 2018. Pricing not disclosed at this time.

UNCOMPROMISING IN ALL RESPECTS, THE AM-RB 001 IS A BESPOKE MACHINE FROM THE TIRES UP.

GOING GOTH By Allison Tankersley

is nothing short of dramatic and should be adored as such. Complete the look by pairing it with a deep lip color such as Christian Louboutin Eton Moi Velvet Matte.

From the return of chokers, Doc Martens, and the denim jacket, my selfies in my twenties are quickly starting to resemble my Kodak camera mirror pictures from middle school. Fashion isn’t the only trend that’s making a comeback from the 90s. Beauty trends, especially in terms of makeup styles, are also beginning to resemble techniques we have seen before in the past. The most notable of these styles that we are seeing for this fall is the return of the heavy goth style eyeliner. These techniques are bound to make a statement as well as catch a few eyes, no pun intended.

Chunky Underline Avril Lavigne is probably sitting in her 5 million dollar Los Angeles home singing “Hey, Hey, You, You, I Love Your Eyeliner” because her signature chunky underline look is once again becoming a hit in the makeup world. The best part about this trend? It is simple to do yourself ! Simply apply a little more eyeliner than you normally would and then use a brush to smudge the look out giving yourself an edgy look that works great for day or night.

Graphic Black Eyes This look was a huge hit at NYFW, especially with Oscar de la Renta. When perfected, this look showcases a thick wing that begins about mid eye with an arch above the lid and connecting to the peak. The Graphic Black Eye is the perfect accent for a fall look and pairs well with light face makeup making your eyes the center focus.

Statement Liners Probably the boldest of these fall eye trends is the statement liner. Designers such as Marc Jacobs, Giamba, and Kenzo all chose this look at NYFW and dominated the runway with it. This look is a really creative one and can be achieved in a variety of ways but is most commonly seen as the addition of more outlines around the eyes and the illusion of multiple eyebrows. While this look is great for high fashion like NYFW, it can also be a fun look to try on your friends at your next girls night in.

Fierce Geometrics This is a bold version of the basic cat eye look. Great for a night out on the town, this look is done by simply adding sweeping lines and straight angles in a variety of directions around the cat eye. This look 30

FALL FASHION AT 900F RUNWAY TRENDS THAT WE CAN WEAR IN FLORIDA By Dubraska Lima What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear “Fall Season”? To me it is HOT WEATHER. Living in Florida and trying to be fashionable at the same time, especially during this time of the year, can be difficult. But it doesn’t have to be like that; actually, we can enjoy the weather, while also being trendy, I promise! Here are some must have items to add to your wardrobe this fall to make your outfit totally accurate with the season, fashion forward, and easy to wear with the temperature in our city:

THE EDGY NECKTIE I know it sounds crazy, but there are many ways to use a scarf as an edgy necktie to add more attitude to your outfit without feeling like you’re dressed in the wrong season. Get that silk scarf you have had in your closet since last winter, and give your look an edgy touch with a necktie. This look is best achieved by tying the scarf in either the french knot or similar to the way a flight attendant might wear her uniform. The idea with this accessory is to complement a casual look and make it more elegant for a brunch with your friends.

WIDE-LEG PANTS These are instant body transformers! You’re going to look skinnier and taller immediately, but the most important part, because of the design and the fabric used for these pants, is that you can spend the entire day with them on without even noticing the hot weather. Probably the most comfortable style option for this fall.

44 STYLETOME.COM

FASHION

MULE SHOES The weather is still too hot Florida, so, we can’t take out our boots just yet. But we do have a new option this fall: mule shoes. These elegant shoes are your best opportunity to be comfortable during a long day outside. Get them in rose or navy for a romantic style, perfect to use during the daylight hours.

OFF-THE-SHOULDER TOP Designers around the world are once again giving a chance to OneShoulder and Off-The-Shoulder tops, and the result is not only beautiful but very useful. No matter if you’re out for shopping or for a date, with either of these tops you have multiple possibilities. Combine either of these with high-waisted pants or with a jean skirt and you’re all set with a look that’s fun, flirty, and totally in season.

DRESS-UP BOHEMIAN A midi dress for work? Yes. The sun and the hot temperature is excuse enough to wear a maxi or midi dress, but that doesn’t mean you have to look like you’re going to the beach. Add a light blazer and anklestrap heels for a classy attire.

OUR TOWN

By Allison Tankersley Living in the sunshine state, Floridians are accustomed to

seeing beautiful beaches and lakes, some even having them in their very own backyard. On any given day we have the opportunity to wander outside with family and friends and enjoy an alluring oasis that most Northerners go to bed dreaming about. Yet a recent lack of protection of our ecosystem is leaving these sensational bodies of water plagued with disaster in the form of a toxic algae bloom. A non-profit environmental law organization, Earthjustice, explains this toxic algae bloom as being a direct result of fertilizer sewage and manure pollution that has gone unregulated by the state. The result of these poor regulation standards is comparable to “adding miracle grow to the water and it triggers massive algae outbreaks.” This fast acting spread of algae, which has been documented to have fortyfour confirmed blooms as of a survey done on June 30th is especially alarming because of the toxicity within some of the more blue green algae. These toxins become a risk to the public’s health and if they are touched or even inhaled can cause a variety of illnesses targeting the liver, skin, and gastrointestinal and nervous systems. This green water gunk is no longer just a slimy eyesore but is also now becoming a danger to the public. So far these outbreaks have been found in the following counties: Martin, St. Lucie, Palm Beach, and Lee, as well as on the southwest coastline. The Department of Environmental Protection is working hard to monitor and eliminate the amount of this algae currently found in Florida’s waterways. However, there is no quick solution to a problem like this. Right now the state is focusing on controlling water flows to prevent any further spread. However, many environmentalists agree that the only way in which to not see a problem like this again is through restoration and the addition of more regulations on our waterways that will keep the pollutants from ever entering in the first place.

THIS GREEN WATER GUNK IS NO LONGER JUST A SLIMY EYESORE BUT IS ALSO NOW BECOMING A DANGER TO THE PUBLIC.

IN THE KNOW

By Mark NeJame

Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley

BUMPED FROM YOUR FLIGHT? WHAT’S THE DEAL! show? And do you have rights as a paying, responsible traveler who purchased a ticket well in advance? The answer according to the Department of Transportation is yes, you do have rights. But it is not illegal to overbook; the airline has a basic right to oversell. So the DOT has established some rules to try and find a happy compromise between the bumped-passenger and the (oh-so-rude) airlines.

You’ve waited for this moment for as long as you can remember. New York Fashion Week. You’ve got your after parties lined up, spend WAY too much on digs at a hotel where you know the scene is on, you’re decked in black and ready to board your flight. Hmm, you think to yourself, this flight sure is packed. Then you hear your name called over the intercom. “We’re sorry” the agent tells you, “we overbooked and we don’t have a seat assignment for you. We’re sorry for the inconvenience, but we’re happy to offer you $500 dollars and we’ll put you on the next flight out tomorrow morning.” WHAT. But that hotel room is $800 dollars a night! (Hey, it’s Fashion Week.) You toiled for months over what to wear to the pre-party tonight! How can they do this?!

First, let’s understand why the airlines overbook: they are simply trying to compensate for the “no-shows.” I’m sure we are all aware that airlines have a dramatic history of fiscal rises and falls – the ubiquitous “Chapter 11 Bankruptcy” is almost synonymous with airlines; they are true slaves to the health of the financial marketplace, particularly when it comes to oil prices and the overall economic stability of companies and individuals, which of course, promotes travel. That being

So what IS the deal with overbooking? Is it just a brazen, arbitrary estimation by the airline of how many travelers won’t

50 STYLETOME.COM

IN THE KNOW

said, the bottom line matters. A lot. So each flight has to be profitable; we can’t just have planes flying around with the seats half empty (isn’t it lovely when it happens, though?). The DOT understands this, and allows for the airline to oversell the seats. However, if all the passengers show up, the DOT requires the airline to ask passengers to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation, usually for a voucher for a fare similar to the one you paid. But when no one wants to “give it up,” the involuntary “bumping” begins. If you happen to be one of the unlucky passengers to get booted from the flight against your will, you are required to receive a written Statements of Rights; included in this should be an explanation of how that airline decides who gets an oversold ticket. Some factors that the

airline may consider is the price paid for the ticket, whether you were late checking in and whether you have a reserved seat assignment (more difficult to do these days). Regardless of the reason, in most situations the airline is required to compensate the passenger what’s called “Denied Boarding Compensation.” The agent should be able to issue you a check right away, at the gate, in the amount of up to $1300.

FIRST, LET’S UNDERSTAND WHY THE AIRLINES OVERBOOK: THEY ARE SIMPLY TRYING TO COMPENSATE FOR THE “NO-SHOWS”. The DOT recommends arriving to the airport as early as you can to guarantee you get on that plane and reminds us that every airline has different rules

regarding overbooking flights. Arriving early should be normal course for all you travelers out there regardless of the overbooking policies, since most airlines are now requiring you to check in at the actual gate before doling out seat assignments. (And remember, a confirmed seat assignment may be a factor your airline considers when choosing who to bump.) So get there early, head to the gate, confirm your seat and enjoy a Bloody Mary with a side of smug, because you know you’re getting on that flight, oversold or not…

Once again, the digital world was the first to get the news. The Tampa International Airport tweeted on July 7th, “Tampa to Havana is here! @SouthwestAir is offering nonstop service to Cuba! Thanks to @USRepKCastor and all who made this possible!” With this and the following tweet, the company announced the tentative validation of the U.S Department of Transportation.

Besides Tampa, the list of cities from which future passengers will be able to schedule flights included Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York City, and Orlando. “Today we take another important step toward delivering on President Obama’s promise to re-engage Cuba,” said Anthony Foxx, U.S. Transportation secretary. “Restoring regular air service holds tremendous potential to reunite Cuban-American families and foster education and opportunities for American businesses of all sizes.” While, the provisional approval was primarily celebrated by the lowfares airline, Southwest, at the end of the day, seven other companies were also awarded similar flight privileges. These airlines include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airline, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Spirit Airlines and United Airlines. An age old remedy for losing weight is right under our noses, known only to a few because most people believe that exercise is the almighty solution to shed off those pounds. It is a strategy most would think is nearly impossible to enact in your daily life but is the best bet against that pesky fat. Eating a balanced diet is the most likely scenario to lose weight effectively. If you’re looking for something fast and easy, look elsewhere. Studies show that based on the general consensus of what an average person eats, it is more likely they would gain weight by eating, for example, a donut, and exercising right afterwards than they would be if they just didn’t eat it at all.

In an article in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the authors – who include British cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra, an outspoken critic of the food industry, said, “Members of the public are drowned by an unhelpful message about maintaining a ‘healthy weight’ through calorie counting, and many still wrongly believe that obesity is entirely due to lack of exercise.” Let’s not play coy; most people know that the fatty, sugary, salty foods they are putting into their bodies are not good for them, and it doesn’t help with the added stress from watching commercial after commercial of Coca-Cola’s effervescent idea to associate their drinks with exercise and sports. This

56 STYLETOME.COM

method isn’t saying that you have to cut these delicious but not-so-good foods out of your diet altogether, but to eat them in moderation and eat more healthy foods. That’s something you’ve probably heard before but never really paid attention to because it seemed like you could just go to the gym and all would be right again. Wrong. In the long game, you can’t simply exercise and expect the weight to just come off; you have to integrate a good system for eating in everyday life that will work for the rest of your life, not just a couple of weeks on an intense workout or a juice cleanse.

ASHITABA THE M I RAC L E P L A N T ?

Botany saves the day for the health and beauty world once again with Japan’s ‘tomorrow leaf ’, the Ashitaba plant. This Asian herb, scientifically known as the Angelica Keiskei Koidzumi, gets its name because of its magical health and beauty effects. More commonly it is referred to as the ‘tomorrow leaf ’ because of its quick regeneration process of leaves. Unlike most herbs that only target one issue, Ashitaba is noted for using its eleven vitamins and thirteen minerals to work together to protect numerous aspects of the body.

In terms of health benefits Ashitaba works to speed up the healing of wounds, improve heart health, improve digestion, builds proteins for stronger muscles, creates calcium for stronger bones, improves probiotic production within the body, and strengthens concentration level and memory. The difference between Ashitaba and other herbs is its high level of chlorophyll. The large amounts of chlorophyll within Ashitaba mimics many of our bodies natural blood cells, combining our bodies natural iron with magnesium supplements. This duo benefits our body by acting as an antioxidant, anti inflammatory, anti-tumorigenic, anti-carcinogenic, 58 STYLETOME.COM

Avid users of the Ashitaba herb are the people of a small Japanese community called Hachijo. This area of Japan is full of Ashitaba and incorporates it in many parts of their daily diet crediting it for their title of population with the longest life span. Ahitaba is also a common herb used for Traditional Chinese Medicine practices mainly for its high level of antioxidants, which surpasses the amounts in both green tea and red wine. There are a variety of ways in which to incorporate Ashitaba into one’s daily diet. Ashitaba filled juice, tea, and smoothies are all available for order from various online herbal sites. The extract can also be purchased and consumed in pill form. Alternatively, its sap can also be used in a variety of cooking, most notably in homemade dressings. Ashitaba seeds are available for purchase online and after a quick soak can be grown in a home garden with decent sunshine and rich soil. As always, consult with your doctor before starting any new regimen or including any new herbs or diet.

BEST FRIENDS

BON A-PET-TREAT! By Alexandra Niblett

We all have special people and special pets in our lives that mean the absolute world to us. You know who I mean: the family members that check in on you from time to time just to say a sweet hello, the spouses out there that stop everything they’re doing to sit by your side when you’re sick, those best friends that faithfully keep up with the Bachelorette with you, and, last but not least, our pets who show us unconditional love. Having these good people & lovable pets in our lives makes us fortunate, and as a petlover myself, I think it’s fair to say that being a dog owner is a blast! And if you’ve ever owned a dog, you can probably agree that oftentimes it’s simply gladdening to go the extra mile for our fur balls! While some might look at spoiling our pooches as a negative

thing, spoiling them every now and then is shameless fun that brings both you and your pooch happiness. Trending over the last several years is a phenomenon in which pet owners have increasingly spent more and more money pampering their furry friends — dogs in particular. And while some of these services are a little far-fetched, some of these ideas sound dog-gone good! Here are some ways people love to spoil their pooches!

PET SUITES

Most kennels offer suites for your dogs to stay in that would seem like a treat to temporarily live in, even for a person! While you vacation, 62 STYLETOME.COM

these pet suites situate your dogs in a staycation environment, providing them with TV’s, Lamborghini-style beds, classy wall and floor decorations, an abundance of toys and more. BUT — if you want your pup to live that elevated life at home, you can now get personally designed pet suites installed in your house. These pet suites can run anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, but that’s not the only way your pets can live comfortably.

DOG HOUSES

If you have outdoor dogs, build them an outdoor suite! (A.K.A., a beautiful dog house.) Dogs love a place to relax, and an outdoor space designated for them is a more affordable way to give your dog a space they’d enjoy indulging in the ruff life of

devouring (safe) bones and napping. You can find dog houses at your local home improvement stores, and you can personalize them with cute embellishments, and, a dog favorite, a memory foam pad that’s both comfortable for them to sleep on and beneficial for their joints! Speaking of outdoors, here’s another “out-there” way people cater to their pooches’ needs and lifestyles.

PET DATING SERVICES

That’s right. Many pet owners want the absolute best for their pooches, or as they look upon them as their children. And that means that even though they’re ready to find love, they want the satisfaction that their pets are compatible with the pets of whom they go on a date with! One site, youmustlovedogsdating.com, advertises that “if your dating philosophy is ‘love me, love my dog or leave me the heck alone,’ welcome!” Another site even more specifically geared toward your dogs’ needs is petsdating.com. On this site, people create profiles for themselves and their dogs in an online community that helps owners find a partner to go on dog walks with, schedule playdates, adopt or list a pet for adoption, etc.! Last but certainly not least, datemypet.com is one more dating site created for pet lovers to meet online. The site’s slogan reads, “whether you are looking for a life partner, a buddy for your pet or just someone to hang out with, here you’ll be able to find exactly who you are looking for — pet lovers like yourself.” Finding a partner for your dog is only one of a million ways you can sweeten up your dog’s lifestyle!

THEIR SWEET DOG TREATS ARE MADE WITH MANY DELICIOUS, NATURAL INGREDIENTS THAT YOUR DOGS WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE — MY DOGS ATE THEIR HELPINGS IN SECONDS! SUGAR-COATING THINGS

If you can imagine it, it probably already exists. Dog perfumes, fancy salon-level shampoos in decorative bottles, an array of dog nail polish, tattoos for dogs, pet massages… almost anything that’s paw-sible, already is, you just might not know about it yet. Adorable boutiques and pet stores are sprinkled throughout Florida, including Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming, a Florida-started franchise of dog shops including one located in Celebration that caters to just about every need and desire your dog would have. Their sweet dog treats are made with many delicious, natural ingredients that your dogs will absolutely love — my dogs ate their helpings in seconds! Pampering our pooches is one way we can give back the love they give us on a daily basis… our pets are our fur babies, our best friends, and our little blessings that consistently show time and again how to love without judgment. So treat them to something special from time to time! (The only thing that might bite is the cost of spoiling them.)

FUN FACTS

•The American Pet Products Association estimated that over $60 billion was spent on pets in 2015 •National Dog Day is (was) August 26th

CELEBRITY SOUP

BEFORE THEY WERE FAMOUS Six celebrities and their surprising pre-fame careers! By Riesa Pascal

64 STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

Did you know that award-winning Mean Girls actress Rachel McAdams once spent three years working at McDonald’s? Contrary to what they would like us to believe, celebrities weren’t always as glamorous as we see them today. Long before they became superstars, most of Hollywood’s elite paid their dues by working ordinary—and sometimes quite odd— jobs just like the rest of us. If you’re still striving for personal career success, check out the famous faces below and remind yourself that everybody starts somewhere…even celebrities!

Whoopi Goldberg

In the movie Ghost, Whoopi Goldberg plays a psychic who can communicate with the dead. In real life, Whoopie has never spoke with the dead, but did you know she used to put makeup on them? When Whoopie first moved to California, she got a job as a makeup artist in a mortuary in order to pay the bills. To help her get over her fears of the dead, Whoopi’s boss once pretended to be a corpse and then sat up and waved at her! According to Whoopi, he said, “That’s the worst thing that could ever happen to you here and it won’t. So there’s nothing to be scared of.” A little macabre? Sure, but it proved to be effective!

Johnny Depp

Next time you want to hang up on an annoying telemarketer, think of this story and realize that you just may be hanging up on the next Johnny Depp! Before he was a drunk, yet charming, pirate of the Caribbean, Johnny was a telemarketer who sold pens. He once recalled that time in his life saying, “You’re calling people who don’t want you to call them. You put on your best fake voice and try and sell them a gross or two of ballpoint pens with their name printed on them. First you say, ‘Congratulations. You have just become eligible to win a grandfather clock’ – or a trip to Greece or a Jacuzzi or whatever.’” Something tells Johnny would have no problems selling that gross or two of pens today.

Jon Bon Jovi

Before he was “Living On A Prayer” and performing for millions of fans around the world, global rockstar Jon Bon Jovi had the humblest job of all. When he was 17 years old, the now renowned musician was working as a janitor at his cousin Tony Bongiovi’s recording studio. Like many young men his age, Jon had always dreamed of becoming a rock star, but not many of those men actually go on to do just that. The ambitious janitor finally got his break at the age of 18 when his cousin helped him to record his first single “Runaway” which was a local hit and went on to be a global success. However, Jon’s first professional recording credit is actually on a Star Wars-themed

Christmas album that was produced in the studio where he was working. May the Force be with you always, Jon!

MICHAEL MYERS IS COMING TO ORLANDO

Kanye West

With a reported net worth of $145 million, Kanye West is certainly allowed to have expensive taste in his choice of clothing. I mean c’mon, he’s married to a Kardashian! In 2013, Kanye even released a $120 plain white t-shirt, which sold out immediately and further proved his expensive taste and the power of his influence. Considering the high-end fashion Kanye is into, it’s all the more interesting to learn that he use to fold clothes at Gap in high school. In the song “Spaceship,” Kanye mentions his former employer saying, “Let’s go back, back to the Gap. Look at my check. Wasn’t no scratch. So if I stole, wasn’t my fault. Yeah I stole, never got caught.” For what it’s worth Kanye fans, a plain white t-shirt at Gap could save you more than $100...just a little tidbit for your wallet to think about.

Jerry Springer

We’ve all seen the ever outrageous Jerry Springer Show or at the very least, are familiar with the now famous chant, “Jer-ry! Jer-ry! Jer-ry!” If you have a hard time taking Jerry Springer seriously as professional, educated man, these facts might help you or they just might give you the shock of your life. Before he was instigating fights on his world renowned talk show, Jerry worked as a political campaign adviser to Robert F. Kennedy. After Kennedy’s assassination, the law school graduate went on to join a law firm in Cincinnati, Ohio. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Jerry also served as mayor of the city in 1977. Who’s to say why he left it all behind for a life of baby daddy drama and fist fights, but I think it’s safe to say his bank account doesn’t regret it.

Walt Disney

Today his name is synonymous with “The Happiest Place On Earth,” but there was a lot of hard work and odd jobs behind that success. Before entrepreneur Walt Disney was producing films and winning more individual Oscars than any other person in history, he was delivering newspapers on a paperboy route. The job required Walt to wake up at 4:30am every morning and he faithfully did so for more than six years. Another one of Walt’s earliest jobs was in 1916 when he worked as a news butcher. The then 15-year-old Walt would sell magazines and snacks to travelers on several railroad lines. As a young adult, Walt was rejected by the army and joined the Red Cross as an ambulance driver in France during the end of WWI. At the age of 26, Walt came up with the idea of Mickey Mouse while on a cross-country train ride and the rest is history! 65 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

THE HORROR MOVIE ICON RETURNS TO UNIVERSAL’S HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS By Dubraska Lima After the success of Michael Myers at Halloween Horror Nights in 2014, the movie sequel Halloween II will be featured in Universal Halloween Horror Nights 26, as a part of the collaboration between Universal and Halloween film producer, Malek Akkad. According to Creative Director, Michael Aiello, the visitors will have the opportunity to experience some of the most iconic scenes from the film, “You’ll experience the final scene of 2014’s maze and immediately walk in-between the homes of Haddonfield. You’ll be attacked by Myers the entire way before seeking refuge within the hospital.” And that’s not the end, the knife-wielding Michael Myers, is going to chase the guests during the entire walk through the event, culminating in a “horrifying finale,” said the release. Besides the Haddonfield-based house, named “Halloween: Hell Comes to Haddonfield”, Horror Nights the most recognized Halloween celebration in Orlando, is going to include eight other houses from classic horror movies and series, such as The Walking Dead, The Exorcist and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Tickets for the annual event, Universal Halloween Horror Nights 26, are already on sale to the public. The event will begin on September 16th and run through selected nights until October 31st.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

There’s nothing quite like a catchy song, especially one

By Courtney Caggiano

that climbs the charts with irresistible rhythm and soaring vocals. Now add to that song four musicians and one frontman who is an entertainment icon himself, and you have a winning combination. Maroon 5 is the essence of the cultural phenomenon of catchy— simply because 14 years spent catching the attention of audiences worldwide and holding that attention seems like a feat as unlikely as the audible power of a single catchy song. Whether it’s their Southern California persona that oozes out of their recordings or their exhilarating stadium shows, something about Maroon 5 has kept them at the top since their debut album, Songs About Jane, introduced the band to the world in 2002. Maroon 5 was met with a warm welcome after the album’s lead single, “Harder to Breathe” reached number six on the Billboard 200 chart, helping the album to go platinum and earn the band the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2005. For the next ten years, Maroon 5 would become a radio staple, never allowing enough time to pass between single releases to get left in the dust of other pop bands who just can’t keep up with the seemingly endless wave that Maroon 5 continues to ride. Perhaps the key to the band’s success at maintaining their place in the commercial spotlight is their ability to blend pop-rock and R&B to create a sound that is hard for music fans of any genre to resist. A look at their double-platinum album, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long,” proves their crossover appeal, as hits like “If I Never See Your Face Again” and “Makes Me Wonder” solidified their magnetic characteristic of drawing in fans and critics alike, laying the groundwork for songs like 2011’s “Moves like Jagger,” creating instant sensation among fans. Although the success of this band comes as no surprise, it may be a fun fact to learn that Maroon 5 was formed in 1994, when three of the current members were still in high school. The current The Voice judge and lead singer Adam Levine, then only a 16-yearold musician with big dreams, along with current guitarist Jesse Carmichael and bassist Mickey Madden combined their talents to form the band, formerly named Kara’s Flowers. In 1997, the group of Los Angeles teenagers played at a beach party in Malibu, where a producer gave them their first open door in the industry. With years of experience, new band members, and 17 million album sales later, Maroon 5 has become a multi-platinum-selling pop-rock group that has established themselves as an iconic American band. Their latest album, V, serves as a cornerstone of the musicians’ collective career, hinting at subtleties from their early California rock sound found on their first album as well as showing off new and innovative songs. The debut single from the album, “Maps,” set a record for the highest reach of a debut single by a group on the Top 40 radio charts in 18 years. Be a part of Maroon 5’s continuing history by experiencing their live performances when they come to Orlando for their Maroon V Tour. You can catch this catchy five-piece at the Amway Center on Friday, September 9.

Michael D. Cerasa was born and raised in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. Michael relocated

to Central Florida following his graduation from The Florida State University College of Law. Recognized as a Florida Super Lawyer and member of the National Association of Distinguished Counsel, Michael is sought out by clients nationwide for his expertise in handling a wide range of Plaintiffs injury, product liability and insurance claims. Michael’s approach to the representation of his clients is aggressive, but measured. He takes his role as both attorney, and as counselor, seriously. “My duty to my clients is to diligently fight for their best interests above all else. However, I pride myself on being able to advise clients on a rational, personal level, ensuring that they can make the decisions that are best for them and their family.” Michael is a tireless advocate for people injured due to the negligence of others. His practice involves the representation of people injured in automobile accidents, trucking accidents, and due to defective and dangerous medical devices and pharmaceuticals. “After an accident, a person’s life can be turned upside down. The process of dealing with insurance companies can be overwhelming when an injured individual needs to focus on getting well physically and mentally. My role is to take on that burden and be a friend and confidant in that process.” Most recently, Michael has gotten involved in litigation against Johnson & Johnson related to talcum powder causing ovarian cancer in some women, and against Bayer related to its potentially dangerous blood thinning drug, Xarelto. “Too often, medical devices and pharmaceuticals are put on the market and the manufacturer knows or should know that the product is too dangerous to the user. These companies put profit ahead of patients. One of the most satisfying parts of my practice is helping people fight back against such reckless behavior.” In addition, Michael has been at the forefront fighting for individuals and businesses being taken advantage of by property insurers and other companies. Michael scored two landmark rulings in Federal Court in Ayres v. USAA Casualty Insurance Company and Cunningham v. Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Company, pushing back against insurers improperly applying changes to Florida’s sinkhole legislation. He has also represented hundreds of small businesses along the Gulf Coast impacted by the devastating effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and owners of Volkswagen and Audi diesel vehicles which were discovered to have engines which polluted the environment at illegal levels. Michael, his wife Jennifer and their three children live in Longwood.

JOHN ELLIOTT LEIGHTON Medical Malpractice. Wrongful Death. Catastrophic Injuries THE GO-TO LAWYER FOR SERIOUS INJURY CASES

72 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

ORLANDO’S LEGAL ELITE Special Promotional Feature

Aggressive. Thorough. Accomplished. Creative. Determined. Ethical. Respected. These are some of the words often used to describe personal injury attorney John Leighton.

suffered a brain injury where the driver who hit him only had $10,000 in insurance. By hard, tenacious, creative lawyering, Leighton was able to recover from the insurer for bad faith.

Leighton is unlike most lawyers. He doesn’t seek out cases; they seek him out. For 30 years he has represented people who have been seriously injured and families of those killed by negligence. But his cases most don’t usually come from the public. They come from other lawyers.

A board certified trial lawyer, Leighton is considered one of the foremost experts in negligent security litigation (people injured from a criminal assault). He wrote the textbook (Litigating Premises Security Cases), lectures around the world, and is Chairman of the Inadequate Security Litigation of the American Trial Lawyers. He is past Chairman of the organization’s Motor Vehicle, Highway and Premises Liability Section and currently chairs the Academy of Trial Advocacy, an invitationonly association of catastrophic injury lawyers. As part of his commitment to give back to the legal community, Leighton has lectured to lawyers in over a dozen states and two other countries.

That’s because Leighton is referred the serious, complex and catastrophic cases from around the state. He is seen as the go-to trial lawyer for major personal injury cases like medical malpractice, catastrophic trucking and car crash, resort/hotel/theme park, violent crime/ negligent security and defective product cases. His cases are almost always referred by lawyers from Florida and around the world. Mr. Leighton fought for passage of the first parasailing safety law in the United States after his client’s daughter was killed while parasailing off Florida’s coast. It took seven years but the regulations were finally passed in 2014. Known for his success in medical malpractice cases, Leighton’s track record in obtaining recoveries in Central Florida is remarkable. He won a record-setting $24.1 million verdict for a child who suffered a terrible medical mistake in Seminole County. Then he obtained $9 million for a woman who was given improper anesthesia in the hospital, and $3 million for the Citrus County family whose mom bled to death after her doctor abandoned her. He followed that with a $24.3 million verdict for the family of an off-duty Orlando police officer who was robbed and killed at an ATM, won an $8 million award for the parents of a teenage girl killed on the turnpike, and recently got a $7.4 million verdict in Osceola County for a trucking crash.

Leighton is recognized by his peers as being at the very top of this his field. For 10 years he has been chosen as one of the Top 100 by Florida SuperLawyers, is included in Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite,” and selected 10 consecutive years for The Best Lawyers in America for Plaintiff’s personal injury, medical malpractice and product liability litigation. He received his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Florida. When he is not in court fighting for his clients, he tries to find time to ski, bike and enjoy classic cars.

These are examples of why Leighton has developed a statewide and national reputation. He has been hired to handle cases in Georgia, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina, Illinois and Texas. And while many of his cases garner media attention, most of the time Leighton’s clients are ordinary people who have suffered serious loss. Like the Orlando family of a teen who was killed in a drunken boating crash. That family hired Leighton, who obtained a $1.35 million recovery, with the boater going to prison for 6 years. And like the $3.5 million recovery he won for a motorcyclist who 73 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

GREGORY W. STONER Property Rights Law Firm, P.A. - Eminent Domain

Imagine what it must feel like to discover that one of your most precious assets – your home or business – is in jeopardy of being seized by the government because, through no fault of your own, it has been determined that there is a public need for your land.

Fortunately, Florida Constitution guarantees property owners full compensation for their loss which ensures they receive legal counsel at no cost to them. Therefore, according to Greg, it is critical to seek legal advice immediately upon learning that a property is being considered for government acquisition.

Litigation attorney Greg Stoner is on a mission to protect residents and business owners from eminent domain – the government’s right to take private property for public use. A Central Florida native, his passion for the state and the people that live here inspires him as he guides property owners through the challenging process of navigating eminent domain and its subtle nuances.

A graduate of Stetson University College of Law and the University of Florida, Greg is a member of The Environmental and Land Use Section of the Florida Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Orange County Bar Association and the Seminole County Bar Association. When not practicing law, Greg contributes his talents as a youth sports coach and enjoys spending time outdoors and on the beach with his wife Kathy and their four children.

“Facing off with the government in the eminent domain process can be a very daunting experience,” Greg says. “Most parcels of real estate are highly valued by their owners in both an emotional and a monetary sense. They deserve to have their legacy protected.” With more than two decades of experience both in and out of the courtroom; Greg, managing partner of Property Rights Law Firm, P.A., utilizes his extensive legal expertise, strong negotiating skills and firm foundation in business and finance to provide his clients exceptional representation as they strive to defend their investments.

The Beregovich Law Firm “You should love what you do,” says Mr. Beregovich, who is dogmatic in his approach to bringing his ‘Northern’ values based on a strong work ethic, customer service and big law experience to clients in a boutique law firm setting. Corporate culture at the Firm is all about customer obsession in which injured clients are pampered with flowers, a concierge atmosphere and frequent communication. The Beregovich Law Firm is dedicated to personal injury law, with an emphasis on auto cases, and provides fully integrated corporate counsel services to businesses large and small. Mr. Beregovich is admitted to practice law in Florida, New Jersey and the District of Columbia and holds degrees from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and London School of Economics in London, England. It says a lot about your organization when prospects call ready to hire you sight unseen, about the services provided to former clients, and most importantly, about the people that you work with. I wouldn’t have it any other way.” At the start of his legal career, Mr. Beregovich worked for maritime attorney Stephen Hibbe where he licensed and registered private yachts under the jurisdiction of the British Virgin Islands in accordance with maritime law. Subsequently, Mr. Beregovich produced a directed research paper, ‘Offshore Vessel Registration and the Legalities Affecting Vessel Nationality’ that was published several times most notably by the Trial, Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association and the Miami-Dade County Bar Association. 80 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

RICHARD HORNSBY Board Certified Criminal Trial Lawyer

Richard Hornsby has become the criminal defense attorney of choice for those who find themselves in the crosshairs of federal and state prosecutors in Central Florida. The youngest son of the late J. Russell Hornsby, one of Orlando’s most flamboyant trial lawyers, Hornsby is, by anybody’s definition, a colorful lawyer himself. Known for his animated arguments, relentless cross-examination, and ability to win the seemingly unwinnable case, Hornsby has achieved an enviable record of success in the courtroom. Ask Hornsby what he loves most about criminal defense and he will tell you that nothing gets him more excited than announcing ready for trial, because there is nothing more exhilarating than hearing “not guilty” at the end of a hard fought trial – words that Hornsby tends to hear more than the average criminal defense attorney. But Hornsby is quick to point out that no matter how easy an acquittal may have appeared, the truth is it didn’t come easy. Long before a case ever gets to trial, Hornsby will have immersed himself in the facts of the case, challenging witnesses’ claims, identifying conflicts in the evidence, and developing a defense that offers his client the greatest chance of acquittal. And given the increasing importance of social and forensic science in criminal law, Hornsby has committed himself to being the most knowledgeable attorney in the courtroom. That is why, after graduating law school from the University of Florida, Hornsby obtained a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida and a second master’s degree in Forensic Science from the University of Florida. Hornsby’s commitment to professional growth and record in the courtroom are reflected in the numerous honors he has obtained as a criminal defense attorney. Hornsby was voted Best of the Bar in Criminal Defense by the Orlando Business Journal in 2007, was named to the Florida Rising Stars list in criminal defense by Super Lawyers Magazine from 2012-2015, and was named to the Florida Super Lawyers list in criminal defense by Super Lawyers Magazine in 2016 – his first year of eligibility.

From 1973 to 1980, Mark Horwitz

was an Assistant United States Attorney. While representing the United States he prosecuted all types of cases including Medicare fraud, tax evasion, wire and mail fraud, fraud against the government, drugs and the murder of the Gotha Postmaster. The opportunity to prosecute these and other crimes provided Mr. Horwitz a solid basis to vigorously defend people under investigation for or charged with serious crime in both federal and state court. Since 1980, Mark has been in private practice in Orlando. He has defended people throughout Florida and the United States. Defending complex federal crimes has been a major part of his practice. He has also defended clients in state criminal matters involving white collar crimes, theft, bribery and state sales tax. In non-white collar cases, he has defended clients in matters involving vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with death, murder, drugs, child pornography, sex crimes and other offenses. Mark Horwitz is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Criminal Trial Advocate and by The Florida Bar as a specialist in Criminal Trial Law. He has the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by MartindaleHubbel. In addition to the preeminent rating in Martindale-Hubbel, he is listed in Best Lawyers in America and Florida Super Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz believes that defending a person’s liberty is the most important responsibility an attorney can undertake. In protecting a client’s freedom, Mark’s philosophy is that no stone is left unturned, all facts are thoroughly investigated, legal issues fully developed and all actions legally and ethically possible are undertaken for the defense. The lawyers and paralegals that work at the Horwitz firm help him carry out these principles. Horwitz utilizes a team concept of lawyers and Florida Bar Registered Paralegals in conjunction with modern technology when investigating, organizing evidence and building a strong defense. Criminal investigations, especially involving white collar crimes, can take months or years. In pre-indictment investigations, the goal is to conduct a thorough defense investigation aimed at developing the facts to convince law enforcement and prosecutors that criminal charges are not warranted. By preventing criminal charges, the client is able to avoid the humiliation and emotional stress associated with indictment and arrest. In some cases

it is not possible to prevent the filing of criminal charges. In those situations the prearrest defense investigation is important to a vigorous defense at trial. Criminal tax defense has always been a part of Mr. Horwitz’s practice. He has represented professionals such as doctors, dentists, architects, athletes, as well as business owners and other individuals under investigation and charged with violating criminal tax laws. He has tried many criminal tax cases and has been able to persuade the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice to close investigations without prosecution. Mark Horwitz has also helped many clients with unreported offshore bank accounts enter and complete the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program, thereby avoiding federal arrest and criminal prosecution and reducing civil monetary penalties. It is not unusual to deal with tens of thousands of documents and hundreds of gigabytes of computer data in white collar cases. To control such massive amounts of evidence, Horwitz utilizes the paralegals and the attorneys that work in his firm as well as cutting edge technology. Although important, Mark believes that “there is no substitute for experience, hard work and diligence to accomplish the goal of defending liberty.”

SCOTT L. RICHARDSON C r i m i n a l D e fe n s e A t t o r n e y

ORLANDO STYLE

Return all calls promptly. Be on time. Set exceedingly high goals for the outcome of each case. Be creative. Be innovative and imaginative in your approach. Do not be afraid to be unconventional. Mr. Richardson incorporates all of these ingredients in his law practice located in downtown Orlando.

The Richardson family moved to Seminole County in 1975. Mr. Richardson quickly immersed himself in everything Florida - fishing, diving, surfing, citrus, dermatology appointments and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Scott graduated from Lake Brantley High School in 1978 and entered the University of Florida the fall of that same year. While attending the University of Florida, Mr. Richardson worked his way through school by selling advertising space for the Independent Florida Alligator and landscaping. Scott was also a rider for the Gator NSSA surf team and acted as treasurer for that organization. In less than four years he had his degree in Political Science. After working with Akerman, Senterfitt and Eidson in Orlando, Richardson entered the University of Florida College of Law in January 1983. Mr. Richardson gained valuable insight to the practice of law under the tutelage of renowned professors of the University of Florida, and through his work with Gainesville, Florida law firms. Not long after graduation from law school, Mr. Richardson worked for the law firm of Pomerantz and Butler in the United States Virgin Islands, which specialized in complex civil litigation. Mr. Richardson came back to the mainland and ultimately opened his own law firm in 1989 in the historic Tinker Building in downtown Orlando. Mr. Richardson would tell you that some people in the community may have a dim view of criminal defense attorneys - until they need one. When someone gets involved in the criminal justice system, particularly for the first time, it can be an exceedingly traumatic event. Most times people accused of crimes are incarcerated at least for a little while and then will be expected to make a court appearance, at some time, while their case is pending. This can be a nerve racking and daunting experience for people who have not gone through the process previously. While lawyers , judges and court personnel are in court every single day, people accused of crimes are not. It is critical to hire a criminal defense attorney who has the time and inclination to prepare citizens accused of crimes for the experience which lies before them. Scott Richardson prides himself on being accessible and responsive to his clients and responds to communications 24 hours a day - 7 days a week.

He has also represented a number of local doctors and lawyers who were in need of guidance in the criminal or family court system, which need to be handled swiftly and discreetly. Mr. Richardson sets his sights on achieving his client’s goals in every single case. His law firm is on scenic lake Eola , a few blocks from the Orange County Court House.

JONATHAN ROSE Orlando’s Legal Elite | Federal & State Criminal Defense | Professional License Defense Life and legal experience give Jonathan Rose a unique perspective on his clients’ problems, as well as the legal issues facing them. Jonathan attended college at Western Kentucky University, graduating magna cum laude. He went on to attend the University of Miami School of Law, graduating cum laude. During college and law school, Jonathan served in the Marine Corps Reserve for six years in infantry and ANGLICO units, attaining the rank of Sergeant and being twice decorated. After law school, Jonathan was an assistant state attorney in Orange and Osceola counties, prosecuting a wide variety of crimes. After three years, Jonathan practiced in complex civil litigation, representing numerous Fortune 500 companies and other institutional clients. But while this experience was invaluable to honing his skills, he returned to his passion – the courtroom – and began defending the rights of those whose lives and careers are threatened by the government.

Jonathan also applies his legal acumen to the defense of Florida’s lawyers, doctors, and nurses facing administrative complaints. Jonathan has successfully represented professionals charged with various forms of misconduct, including unlicensed practice, impaired practice, sexual misconduct, criminal charges arising from the performance of their professional duties, as well as a host of other allegations. Jonathan has developed a reputation, as stated by a colleague, as an “…excellent lawyer. Professional. Yet aggressive. Very focused and tries to think outside the box.” It is this reputation that has earned Jonathan Martindale Hubbell’s highest possible rating, AV, for legal acumen and ethical conduct. This rating is bestowed on less than five percent of all lawyers. Jonathan has also been selected as member of the National Trial Lawyers Top 100. Jonathan is a passionate advocate who firmly believes in the rights bestowed upon us by the United States and Florida constitutions. In essence, we all have a right to a defense if we are accused of a crime or some other misconduct. Jonathan believes in not only a defense, but a zealous, determined effort. “It is the essence of a lawyer’s duty to do everything possible to improve a client’s position within the bounds of the law and ethics - to leave no stone unturned. I’m extremely comfortable in the courtroom. I really like it; it’s fun. What do you like best about the practice of law? I like winning and I’m good at it. Being in the courtroom fighting for my clients brings me a lot of pleasure. Not many people hire a trial attorney to “do their best;” they hire them to win. That’s what we do and we do it well. I’m tough in the courtroom, but I can leave it behind. Peaceful, private, respectful divorce. Elaine T. Silver, Collaborative divorce lawyer and mediator, steers her clients on a clear path through the turmoil of divorce. Here’s what her clients say: “You did much more than advocate on my behalf, you helped me grow. I am so thankful to you and for the luck that brought me to you.” “Not only a fantastic divorce lawyer but also a great person. She is an excellent advisor and smart enough to realize that she works for the client, not the other way around. She was spot on with the right approach. If I could give her more than five stars I would. That is the difference that she made in my life.” “Elaine did an exceptional job representing me. She demonstrated wisdom, intelligence and grace during this entire ordeal.” “I was so overwhelmed by the divorce and concerned for my children. At times the anger, anxiety and selfdoubt seemed unbearable. Elaine was so wonderful at keeping me calm and focused. She helped me get through the process with dignity. She helped me concentrate my energies on the best outcome for my kids and me. I walked away from divorce with my head held high. Years later, I consider Elaine my divorce attorney, my spiritual guru, and my friend.” Silver focuses on guiding clients to act with dignity, arrive at best outcomes, and plan carefully for the future. Each client benefits from Silver’s personal attention and expertise. She represents individuals with complex financial lives: high net worth business owners, professionals and their spouses. Collaborative Divorce and mediation put the children’s needs first and provide a private path to divorce where clients stay in control. Contrary to common belief, judges ultimately decide less than 5% of all divorces. Peaceful resolution sets the stage for the future well being of the whole family—spouses, children, grandparents. Passionate about educating people to understand their options for divorce, Ms. Silver lectures on “How To Have a Peaceful Divorce.” An audience member commented: “I thought divorce would be a boring topic. But it was NOT! You are an excellent speaker with the right amount of passion, humor, and knowledge to make it interesting, informative and thought provoking.”

issues often overlooked by other firms. That starts with addressing the most common mistake people make in their estate planning, not updating their plans once the initial documents are signed. This becomes problematic over time because assets and family situations change leaving the original estate plan inadequate or obsolete. Wasinger Law estate plans include a no charge three-year review to avoid his clients’ plans from becoming outdated. “Our goal is to ensure that our client’s estate plans adapt as their lives change to protect both their family members and financial assets”, Wasinger says, “because an out of date estate plan is almost as useless, and just as costly, as having no plan.” As a result, Wasinger sees his clients’ signing of estate planning documents to be the start of a lifelong relationship. Matt also conveys how important it is for couples with young children to have a plan in place. “Most people believe estate planning is for when you are older, or push it off assuming they have plenty of time.” But, Wasinger says, that line of thinking is what gets people in trouble. “The longer people wait, the more their children, business, and assets are exposed. Life doesn’t wait, so putting a plan in place as soon as possible is one of the most important steps a family can make to prepare for those unexpected life events.” Wasinger Law Office also focuses on real estate and business law. Wasinger represents banks, private lenders, businesses and individuals in the areas of business formation, title actions, foreclosures, liens, and landlord-tenant issues. He also handles sale and purchase contracts, leases and rental agreements. THE ALFOND INN AT ROLLINS UNVEILS

“THE COLLECTION” COCKTAIL MENU IN TRIBUTE TO THE ALFOND COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Everything for Love No Worries

The Alfond Inn at Rollins Unveils “The Collection” Cocktail Menu In Tribute To The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art. The Alfond Inn at Rollins has introduced a creative new cocktail menu for its Hamilton Kitchen restaurant and lounge area, honoring The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art for Rollins College (part of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum), which the hotel showcases. The Everything For love cocktail, made of Ron Zacapa Centenario, Simple Syrup, Mole bitters, Orange bitters, with chocolate straw and grapefruit peel pays tribute to the Everything For Love Blue Neon sign artwork by Tracey Emin, located near the entrance to the hotel elevators. The No Worries cocktail, made of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Muddles Pineapple, sage, lemon juice and Simple Syrup pays tribute to Don’t Worry, a sculpture by Matt Keegan, from a poster by James Richards, of a poem by Josef Albers 2012, located in the hotel library. The Mirrors Envy cocktail, made of Tito’s Vodka, Green Tea, rosemary, lemon juice and Simple Syrup is inspired by the title of Mark Flood’s Mirror Mirror 2012, an obvious allusion to the Evil Queen’s refrain in the classic fairy tale Snow White. The evil queen was green with envy. Located across from the Hamilton’s Kitchen hostess stand. Other new Signature Cocktails on the menu include The MBA with Woodford Reserve Bourbon, fresh muddled blackberries, orange, Simple Syrup and ginger ale; the Watermelon Basil Rita with Patron Silver Tequila, house made sweet and sour, basil and watermelon; and the Strawberry Dutch Mule with Ketel One Orange, fresh lime juice, Simple Syrup, strawberries and ginger beer. The Alfond Inn at Rollins offers free art tours of the in-house collection, leaving from the lobby, every Sunday at 1 p.m., as well as Happy Hour Art Tours the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m., which gives participants the opportunity to enjoy the hotel’s Happy Hour (3 to 7 p.m.) before or after the tour. No reservations are required for either art tour. For more information on The Alfond Inn at Rollins, go to www.thealfondinn.com.
