> It’s been ten years since the attack on the World Trade Center occurred and since that time we have survived the many ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ which followed and exist to this day. Hopefully, the armed conflicts we are participants in will soon end so that our great country can get back to the business of replenishing its confidence as well as its economic growth. Having a positive mindset will be the catalyst for strengthening these objectives.

When it comes right down to reality, we know that the big corporations are all awash in cash and profitability. Next, we always seem to have a problem finding a parking space at the malls, leading us to believe that things are just not as bad as they appear. Now we face a presidential election year and while we never take political sides we hope that our elected officials begin working together in a bipartisan way to lead us back to prosperity.

Jessica Sanchez Every morning when you tune into your Local 6 Morning News, Jessica Sanchez is there to greet you. Having received her degree in mass communications, Jessica set out to achieve a career in television journalism. A Utah native, Jessica first learned the ropes in Salt Lake City as a video editor and associate producer, before moving to Idaho. > When it comes to dealing with stress men and women go about it differently. According to psychologists, the testosterone in men - while great for motivating them to change tires or leave ankle-deep puddles of water around the sink when they brush their teeth - also prompts them to bottle up stress like a genie that can only be released when they’re alone and watching a game as they drink beer (as long as their team doesn‘t fumble in the 4th quarter). Women are just the opposite. The estrogen in our bodies reaches out to hug stress in a hormonal embrace where it is fed and nurtured and allowed to grow into a defiant teenager that we don’t want to be left alone with.

This is why, when we’re stressed, we seek out populated areas like malls.

Men are told to manage their stress by exercising, eating healthy and sleeping well.

That’s all it takes! All of those things can be done at home. Women, on the other hand, are a little more complicated. They’re told to try pilates, have a girl’s lunch, or pamper themselves at a spa, and all of these things must be done at the mall (reaching for sales and stretching your budget is an excellent form of retail pilates).

For women the mall is simply one big psychiatric center and each store is like a personal therapist with a different specialty: • The mature but chic styles in department stores remind women of the careers they’ve worked so hard to achieve and this gives them pride.

They’ll later learn the pitfalls of buyer’s remorse when they realize they bought a purse that cost more than all of their other purchases combined.

• Make-up counters may not get rid of stress itself, but they do away with the wrinkles and bags caused by stress.This restores confidence as it allows women to look as young on the outside as they feel on the inside.

• Shoe stores are the equivalent of Xanax.

• And lingerie stores let women work out any daddy issues that usually only surface on a cruise when they’re drunk.

Even the generic Bourbon chicken at the food court tastes sweeter than any homecooked meal for the simple fact that she is not home and does not have to cook (or clean). But, like any therapy, there can be set-backs. A woman’s stress may go up as she walks by the Apple store because it may remind her of the husband and kids at home who play video games and watch TV instead of picking up around the house.

For the most part though, when she walks out of the mall her arms may be weighed down by shopping bags, but her mind is (Buy-1-Get-1) free of stress! For those few hours she wasn’t lamenting the past or stressed about the future, she was truly living in the “now.” Unfortunately she’ll eventually come down from this high but she can tell herself that retail therapy is still cheaper than a psychiatrist.<

Fashion Week The Mall at Millenia Hosts 2011 Fashion Week

What else can be more fabulous and fun other then the annual Mall at Millenia Fashion Week? With celebrity hosts, fashion shows, Fashion’s Night In, Fashion’s Night Out, charity galas, and of course, lots of incredible new ideas for your fall wardrobe. The Mall at Millenia Fashion Week is the greatest fashion event in Central Florida, and it sure does get better every year.

As the “Fashion Week” banners flew high in front of the Mall at Millenia from September 8th thru September 14th, there was an undeniable energy that swarmed throughout each store from the kick off celebration, Fashion’s Night Out, on September 8th.

Being the first year that the Mall at Millenia hosted their very own Fashion’s Night Out, participating stores held numerous sweepstakes, in-store activities, and a Ready.Set. Shop gift with purchase event. I like to consider Fashion’s Night Out the “warm up” for what was ahead.

On September 9th, the Mall at Millenia hosted yet another brand new event, Fashion’s Night In. A private and invitation only cocktail hour catered by Arthur’s Creative Events & Catering and high energy tunes from Orlando’s very own DJ Scotty B resulted in an elegant and fun evening for all.

Sipping on a glass of wine and mingling with fellow guests, the anticipation began to stir up as participating stores such as; Lacoste, MaxStudio, Betsey Johnson, Bloomingdales, BCBG, and Anthropology showcased their beautiful fall collections. So far in the week we have seen Fashion’s Night Out, Fashion’s Night in, and on September 10th we saw the best yet, the Fashion for All Fashion Show. Not only did the fashion show include stores such as; Ann Taylor, Ed Hardy, Cache, Quiksilver, White House/Black Market, Banana Republic, Macy’s, but the best surprise of it all was a special guest host, George Kotsiopoulos. Being the co-host of Fashion Police on E! Entertainment and a celebrity stylist, George traveled all the way to Orlando from Los Angeles to be a part of our very own Fashion Week. That’s quite a compliment, if you ask me! With open seating for all mall guests, the fashion show for all brought together guests with one definite interest in common; they all love fashion.

We have seen the Runway to Hope events previously in March 2011 and last year’s Mall at Millenia Fashion Week however, each year seems to be a little more magical. On September 11th, the remarkable charity event

to benefit pediatric cancer, the Runway to Hope Champagne Brunch and Fashion Show, was hosted by Fashion Week’s guest host, George Kotsiopoulos. As founders of the charity, Mark and Josie NeJame never fail to out do themselves while putting together an exquisite event, there was no doubt that bringing together the supporters of the cause was heartfelt and benefiting for all participants. Closing out Fashion Week was the traditional and fabulous International Academy of Design and Technology Fashion Show on September 14th. The talented student’s of IADT showcased their collections in a fashion show, which was hosted by XL 106.7’s Laura Diaz.

Once again, the Mall at Millenia put together another fabulous week of exciting events, in-store promotions, fashions shows, celebrity hosts, and a chance for all lovers of fashion to get together for the mere purpose of fashion. As we got our new fashion trend ideas from Orlando’s very own fashion stylist, Melanie Pace, who uses her talent to style the models and give us ideas for our fall purchases.We owe a lot of thanks to the Mall at Millenia and their hard working staff for giving us yet another successful Fashion Week. <

It’s that time of the year when every day is refreshingly cool and you can’t help but notice the stylish transitions from apparel to cuisine unfolding as we inch closer to the fall season. Right before the cooler temperatures rolled through Orlando Style and Grand Marnier put on a sizzling event at Terrace 390 on August 31st.

Central Florida’s most influential trade professionals came together for a themed night. The patio at Terrace 390 was transformed into a nightclub to feature Grand Marnier’s official En Rouge Summer Cocktail Party appealing to the nightlife crowd. As the sun went down, go-go dancers pumped up guests with Grammy Award winner DJ Nasty of 102 JAMZ setting the tone alongside host Ricky Padilla of Power 95.3. Miss Grand Marnier welcomed guests into the courtyard where hints of red roses and specialty drinks greeted guests. Grand Marnier cocktails like the Grand Smash made with fresh mint sprigs and lemon chunks along with the Reverse Margarita mixed with tequila and fresh sour gave guests a twist of something new to dive into. Two additional crowd favorites included the Grand Tea with a splash of freshly brewed unsweetened iced tea and the Cool Grand Chilled Shot. Throughout the night light bites, with the luxury liquor as the key ingredient, gave a unique flavor to the Margarita Marinated Chicken with citrus pico and

coconut rice, the Glazed Shrimp pinned on a sugar cane skewer (my favorite) and the Chocolate Truffle dessert to name a few. Who knew you could do so much with Grand Marnier? Fun! Models with mile long legs and flawless makeup accented an exceptional evening held at Neiman Marcus for Fashion’s Night Out at the Mall at Millenia.

The upbeat September 8th event was every woman’s dream come true with on-site makeovers, fashionable bags, jewels, accessories and designer shoes fit for the 2011 fall season. Ahh…(sigh), wish I could relive it all…it was as if the pages of Orlando Style came to life on both levels of Neiman Marcus. A live fall fashion shoot with models in full hair and makeup, presented a unique perspective allowing guests a true view of the fit and flow of the latest designs off the rack.The evening overflowing with endless wine, Champagne and appetizers from Sous Chef Daniel Ruell of Brio Tuscan Grille, the Hyatt Regency Orlando and the sweet treat of Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt with fresh toppings added to the inviting atmosphere. Dress to impress was clearly the unspoken theme of the night. Guest struck a pose in their best outfits and posed for their own unique photo shoots after a beauty extravaganza with mini-makeovers and consultations with makeup artists. I must say, although the night mainly catered to the women the men made handsome statements with their picture perfect looks. To capture all the memories Photo Mingle and The Flipbook People set up mini photo shoots for guests to strike a pose for this fashionable affair. What a blast! Can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.

A signature staple of Orlando’s ever growing generosity was again the talk of the town at this year’s Runway To Hope showcase held in the Grand Court of the Mall at Millenia.The Champagne brunch fundraiser and fashion show was held on

September 11th to raise money and bring awareness to Central Florida’s children and families impacted by pediatric cancer.

The runway show featured the latest fall collections from select designers and boutiques inside the mall. If you did not attend you missed a celebrity sighting as E! Entertainment’s Fashion Police George Kotsiopoulos hosted the event alongside Runway To Hope Founders, Mark and Josie NeJame. After the show treats were sampled inside the stores of participating designers as guests purchased items straight from the runway. The in-store dessert parties and activities were among the highlights along with the opportunity to personally meet Hollywood celebrity stylist and Style Network guru Kotsiopoulos.

The giving continued on the greens as the woman who gave birth to NBA star Shaquille O’Neal gave a fresh breath of life into a fabulously fashionable fundraiser. Shaq’s Mama Said Knock You Out Charity Golf Tournament and Soulful Midday Soiree was hosted by Lucille O’Neal on September 16th. The goal? Raise money for cancer research along with nursing and educational scholarships through the Odessa Chambliss Foundation.

The foundation was created in honor of Shaq’s late grandmother who worked as a nurse for more than 16 years. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of meeting Shaq’s mom Lucille O’Neal, will tell you that her down to earth personality equally matches her giving spirit which is why so many made this event a priority. Shingle Creek Golf Club played host to the tournament where local corporate teams battled it out for bragging rights. The 1930’s “Cotton Club” atmosphere featured smooth jazz during the tournaments midday soiree surrounded by an extraordinary buffet of soul food favorites.

This noteworthy awards ceremony spotlights outstanding local leaders for their service and commitment to Central Florida’s hospitality industry while proceeds benefit education scholarships at the UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management. Honorees include Carolyn Fennel from OIA, Jim Atchison of SeaWorld, Mark McHugh from Gatorland and Harris Rosen of Rosen Hotels & Resorts. The special night held at the Gaylord Palms Resort on October 1st was stellar, as shining stars in our community received the esteemed honor for service.

> Anyone that has known me for more than five minutes should be able to easily name my favorite holiday — Halloween. I’m really into it. Just ask my staff at Visit Orlando; when we celebrate this day as a company, I dress up in full costume and encourage everyone to do the same. My wife Pam and I decorate our house, too. And I love a good Halloween party, the scarier the better. In fact, one of my cherished memories is when I was picked to be a “scaracter” during Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios® Florida a few years ago. Good times.

Luckily for me — and generations of fans — Orlando is the epicenter of Halloween celebrations. Something happens here in the fall that transforms the world’s greatest family-vacation destination into one of the largest Halloween parties on the planet.

Maybe it’s the abundance of hi-tech special effects available to many of the attractions.

Or maybe it’s their talented, creative staffs seeking some mischievous fun. Either way, visitors and locals alike come out to the area’s theme parks and attractions to experience the scares — which range from family friendly mild to PG-13-wild — and enjoy a month-long celebration of all things that go bump in the night (and the treats that go along with them).

The before mentioned Halloween Horror Nights 21 pushes the scare envelope quite a bit more than the other parks, and is ideal for teens and adults (though costumes are not allowed). This year the macabre theme focuses on “fate” and “luck,” with a few surprises in store as well. One of the centerpieces is an all-new haunted house — inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming remake of the classic thriller “The Thing” — which will recreate the detailed sets and alien creatures from the movie.

For those of you who want to include the “little ones” in your Halloween adventures, there are several less scary options. Like the appropriately named Mickey’s Not-SoScary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom® park. Kids and parents are encouraged to dress up in their favorite costume, and trick-or-treat around the theme park.

Or head to SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld® Orlando where face painting and a special Sesame Street stage show await.

Yet another uniquely Central Florida option for a Halloween-esque mood is Scott’s Fall Corn Maze at Long & Scott Farms in Zellwood. There’s just something extra spooky about walking through the seemingly endless corn maze, especially if you think of films like “The Shining” and “Children of the Corn.”

Sure, celebrating Halloween is great. But celebrating it in Orlando is even better. Where else can you combine mild weather, major chills and outdoor thrills? One of the Greatest Shows on Earth!

> In 1987, Blue Man Group started as a reaction to the emerging world of technology, the information age and electronic developments and continues to be relevant through the 2000s. In 2007, the Blue Man Group set up shop in Orlando at Universal CityWalk and the Sharp AQUOS Theatre, joining their shows in New York, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas, Tokyo and Berlin.

The Blue Men, three in each show, play instruments made from PVC and have an insatiable desire to drum on anything they can find. Blue men are static in appearance, namely, the ear-less, bright blue head and face, and nondescript, black utilitarian clothing. The show’s soundtrack is a remix of pop, techno and dance that keeps audiences dancing on the edge of their seats and in the aisles.

They’re the strong, silent type, though. Early in development, the three founding members decided that the Blue Men would remain in character at all times—silent, innocent and the only “autograph” they’d sign would be a smudge of blue paint or a blue kiss.

Since coming to Orlando, hundreds of thousands of people have come to the theatre to see the spectacle of music, comedy, light and sound that have marked the Blue Man Group performances since its inception.

Their album “Audio” was nominated for a Grammy in 1999 and their satirical rock concert, How To Be a Megastar World Tour, has toured in more than 10 countries.

The performance at Orlando’s Sharp AQUOS Theatre is a truly interactive experience and the Blue Men make an effort to include the audience as much as possible.

The famous “poncho zone” is in the first four rows. Audience members sitting there

are provided with ponchos in case water, paint or any other substance the Blue Men use for the show is splashed. Don’t worry, it’s all washable, but those new Prada jeans are probably not a good idea.

College students are also on the Group’s radar as rush tickets are available for $30 each on the day of the show. Just show a student ID and score fab tickets, subject to availability and for a limit of two per ID. Be a Blue Man VIP for an extra $20 for allaccess to the Bluephoria Lounge. You’ll don a blue wristband, receive a $10 commemorative show program, two free alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks, and relax in comfort 45 minutes before and after the show. After the show you’ll also get to meet one of the Blue Men one-on-one for a memorable and intimate experience with these true artists.

As a incurable enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of racing both Porsches and BMWs on some of the famed Grand AM and Rolex series race circuits as a hobby, so I have had the good fortune of discussing collectible cars with some of my clients, who also have been bitten by the collecting “bug” to buy classic cars because they have a passion for their beauty and history rather than just as a speculative venture.

I tell them this: don’t start out by buying the “hot” car in the market, only to find that the market for that particular car is very limited, or has cooled to the point where buyers are few and far between. “Those starting out collecting cars need to understand that it is a relatively illiquid market. Buy what you like, and hold on to it. Many true collectors never sell; they enjoy and display their collections like fine art. Jay Leno owns many fine cars and he just enjoys the heck out of driving them.”

I have several clients who collect cars, mostly for the fun of it. I spoke to a collector recently at a show in Monterey, California who had lost substantial money in the real estate market and who had decided to “park” some money in his childhood dream car.

Is car collecting only for the very affluent?

Fact vs. Fiction Breast cancer awareness month is an excellent time to refresh our knowledge about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. While genetics play an important role in the risk factor, there are other factors that can increase or decrease a woman’s risk that can be controlled. These myths and truths are short and informative to help clear up some common misconceptions.

Exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

FACT: Physical activity will not only reduce the waistline, it will also reduce the risk of breast cancer. As little as four hours a week lowers estrogen levels and boosts the immune system. Feel encouraged to take your four-legged friend for an extra long walk, trade in your stilettos for some running shoes, or opt to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Increased stress levels have an impact on breast cancer.

Our skin does a lot more than make us look presentable. In fact, it has many vital functions.The skin acts as a protective barrier insulating and guarding the body against extreme temperatures, damaging rays of the sun, and harmful chemicals.. It also excretes antibacterial substances that help prevent infection and it manufactures vitamin D needed for converting calcium into healthy bones. If the skin’s protective properties stop working for any reason, this can often lead to skin disorders and the need to see a dermatologist.

Q: During the Fall and Winter my skin often gets dry and cracked. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

A:

Moisturizing daily is key to healthy skin, especially in cooler dryer months. In the fall and winter, I do recommend switching from a moisturizing lotion to a moisturizing cream. Although lotions and creams are very similar in composition, creams tend to be more emollient and nourishing to the skin. I also suggest exfoliating once or twice a week using the Clarisonic® Exfoliating Body Brush with the Glytone® Exfoliating Body Wash. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells thereby allowing for better absorption of moisturizers and other skin care products. In order to most effectively trap moisture in the skin, it is best to moisturize within 3 minutes of getting out of the shower.

Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E have been shown to reduce cell damage, which some scientists believe may protect people against age-related diseases. In a moment, the stability of your world alters and everything that seemed urgent just a few moments before -- your to-do list, that spat with your spouse, what to serve for dinner -- suddenly fades into the background as a new priority takes over: “can I beat this?”

With a life-threatening illness looming over your head, it can be hard to think of anything but getting well, but with early detection on the rise and improved treatment and reconstruction options available, preparing for a vibrant life after breast cancer is also an important part of recovery. “When patients first come in, most are really scared and have a hard time seeing past the immediate diagnosis. Our job is to not only get them safely through the immediate medical crisis but also to help put them back on the road to thriving, so that they can fully experience all

of the life and beauty that lies ahead.” says Dzi Newman P.A.-C. of Newman Plastic Surgery, an Orlando practice offering postcancer breast reconstruction. In supporting women along the arduous journey from here to there, plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Newman, Jr., offers these three essential tips for breast cancer recovery: Trust Your Intuition

“The response to a breast cancer diagnosis is different for every woman,” says Dr. Newman. “Some women are crying at the first consultation and others are stoically matter-of fact. Our priority is to carefully present all of the options, help our patients weigh every pro and con, and then support them in whatever decisions they feel are right for their lives and their bodies at that time.”

For Ilka Zuijderland-Varnes, 47, that meant having a single mastectomy after her initial diagnosis, opting out of additional treatment (ie. chemotherapy, radiation, etc.) and forgoing reconstruction. “I wanted a period of time without my breast,” says ZuijderlandVarnes. “To experience life without it and grieve the loss. I just wanted to focus on the fact that I was healthy for awhile.” It was intuition that led to Zuijderland-Varnes’s original cancer discovery and it was intuition again that prompted her to remove her second breast two years later and undergo full reconstruction. “I had the same intuitive feeling again that I had with the first diagnosis,” Zuijderland-Varnes says. “Even though the tests were showing abnormal results, not cancerous, I just felt this was the best thing to do. My intuition was clear and I trusted that. Dr. Newman honored my intuition and supported my decisions, both to postpone reconstruction, and then, ultimately to have it. That is not common with other doctors.”

Build Your Network

Another important aspect of the cancer recovery process is building a support network. “No one does this alone,” says Dzi.

“These women are incredibly strong, but it is support from those who love them that bolster these ladies up and keep them going on the hardest days.”

For some women, their network consists of their spouse, children, relatives, friends, and/ or co-workers. Some turn to breast cancer support groups. For Brenda Smith, 46, the core of her network was her 21-year old daughter. “As soon as I heard my diagnosis, I immediately thought of my daughter,” says Smith. “I’m a single mom.” Smith’s daughter accompanied her on almost all her appointments. “Her support was wonderful,” says Smith “but I also wanted her to see what I went through and understand why monthly breast exams are so important.”

Smith says that Dr. Newman, Dzi, and the clinic’s staff were also core parts of her support network. “Cancer is such a traumatic experience,” Smith says. “They made me feel comfortable and helped me see past my immediate diagnosis to the future. Dr. Newman reminded me how young I am still.

I felt so personally cared for that I didn’t even mind the reconstruction process. I just really looked forward to visiting the office because of that support. It made all the difference.”

Set Realistic Expectations

In the process of beating cancer, many women view breast reconstruction as the happy finish line, not realizing reconstruction is a process in and of itself. “Reconstruction is not the same as a breast augmentation,” says Dr. Newman. “When breasts are fully removed, we have to reconstruct from nothing. Our goal is to create optimal, natural-looking results while still helping patients understand the parameters of what’s realistically possible.”

For Patti Wade, realistic expectations really helped her navigate what became a prolonged and complicated reconstruction process. “My skin wouldn’t heal because of the chemo,” says Wade. “It was frustrating and uncomfortable but my family helped me

through it and Dr. Newman and Dzi were so caring and empathetic. It wasn’t easy, but the reconstruction felt like a completion for me.

People say I was so positive going through it.

That is so nice to hear. Life is good.”

Moving On

Trusting your intuition, surrounding yourself with solid support, and setting realistic expectations are all essential parts of the recovery process. “The final step,” says Dzi “is moving on.” Breast cancer becomes such an overwhelming part of a woman’s life that it can become part of her identity. Letting go and moving forward is the last leg of the journey. “It was strange when it was all done,” says Zuijderland-Varnes. “Coming in for our reconstruction appointments became such a normal part of our lives that when Dr. Newman said all was well and he’d see us in a few months, my husband said ‘So what? You’re breaking up with us?’ …

The relationships we built here were that strong.”

“We grow very attached to our patients,” says Dzi. “But ultimately them coming around less means cancer is no longer a part of their every day. We love when everyday concerns like a few extra laugh lines are the biggest reason they visit us. We’re happy to help with those sorts of normal worries. Although, to us, these women are already unbelievably beautiful.”<

> No matter how long ago it was, every high school experience is basically the same. There’s the popular girl, the guy on every varsity sports team, performing artists who wander the halls singing show tunes, the chemistry lab assistants and, if you attended Winter Park High School around the early 2000s, there was the guy who did magic.That guy was Kostya Kimlat.

I met Kostya through friends of friends of friends. He usually had a deck of cards on hand, charming his teachers with a few sleight-of-hand tricks and leaving his signature playing card in between the ceiling tiles in each classroom on his semester schedule.

Now, after touring and traveling the world, visiting and learning from international magicians, honing his skills and making a name for himself in the magic world, Kostya is back in Orlando, his hometown, performing at Del Frisco’s Prime Steak & Lobster in Winter Park for an intimate dinner and magic show.The $98 price tag, which includes four courses and the show, is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Specializing in sleight-of-hand and close-up magic, Kostya is a confident and poised performer.

He weaves a story throughout his performance, imbuing his work with timeless sentimentalism that belies his youth. He’s not even 30 yet.

He begins the show with a demonstration of the fact that we are all a product of our choices, and that even though some may believe in luck (like this writer), destiny or choice, magic brings us all together.

In a dimly lit, romantic, window-less room, Kostya takes center stage and involves his audience every step of the way. He takes the time to get to know the people he’s performing for, and is a gracious host for the evening. He starts with a few introductory tricks with cards, dice, and illusions. It’s a fine warm-up, and he instantly captivates viewers with his storytelling.

I’m usually content to sit on the sidelines during these audience participation shows, always the observer and analyzer rather than the enthusiastic participant, but I was thrilled to be sitting in an opportune place to be a part of the action during the show. I was willing to suspend my disbelief in the magical arts for a few hours while Kostya filled the room’s inhabitants, who ran the age range from preteen to elder, with childlike wonder.

ing action to climax (the “wow!” moment) to a conclusion that makes the whole trick worth the buildup. As a good meal, like the one you’ll have at Del Frisco’s during the show, the main course lasts just long enough to capture your imagination and seduce your palate, and just fleeting enough to leave you wanting more.

Pick your main course: Either a bone-in ribeye, 8 oz. filet, New York strip or salmon filet is on the menu, accompanied by crisp asparagus amandine and the restaurant’s signature “chateau” potatoes. Enjoy shrimp cocktail and salad as your appetizers, and finish the evening with a decadent and generous glass of chocolate mousse and your choice of tea or coffee.

The meal is elegant and ultra-classic. Red banquettes line the hallways of Del Frisco’s, candelabras hang from the rococo tiled ceiling and private dining rooms are primed for business power lunches and parties. I typically order steak one degree lower than I like it because, typically, by the time it gets the table, it’s usually at my desired temperature. No need to do that at Del Frisco’s. The place has been an Orlando institution since 1993, so they know what they’re doing every step of the way.

Service is polite, attentive and barely noticeable (the mark of an elegant dining experience, in my opinion) while the main course doesn’t skip a beat. Pick a Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon by the glass or choose a bottle from Del Frisco’s extensive wine list for a unique pairing.

While the food shines bright, Kostya’s gracious performance is truly the star. At 23, he became the youngest magician to be featured on the cover of Magic Magazine. He’s the official magician for the Orlando Magic, performing at halftime and for corporate events all over the country, teaching high-powered clients everywhere to “Think Like a Magician.” What does this mean, exactly?

If I had to venture a guess, and I always do, from what I saw in Kostya’s performance and what I know of business, the relationship between client and vendor is a delicate one, often based on illusion. It’s an art to mesmerize with words and flourishes of the hand while one is making it work behind closed doors.

Kostya is an expert at this: at not taking his audience for fools, inviting them to be a part of the process through the whole journey, and all the time making us believe the art of magic is a product of our own choices. <

> Independence, confidence, joy, love, comfort, and hope--these are just a few of the words that Canine Companions for Independence graduates use to describe what their assistance dog means to them.

For 13 year-old Hailee Albury, of Orlando, the word companionship is what she uses to describe Rane, a yellow Labrador/Golden Retriever cross, that she was matched with at the Southeast Region of Canine Companions in May of 2008.

When Hailee was born she showed no signs of life for 26 minutes until doctors were finally able to get a pulse. As a result Hailee was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and has faced challenges every day doing things that others take for granted. For a child, being different can be a curse, and as Hailee grew older her sense of isolation was heightened by people’s reluctance to approach a young girl with disabilities. Her mother, Becky, knew that having an assistance dog would help Hailee meet people, make her more approachable, would help her pick up dropped items around the house, and most importantly, would become her best friend. So they applied for an assistance dog, spent two weeks in class learning how to handle a dog and pass a rigorous exam and then began their new journey together with Rane.

The Tales & Tails Gala is the Southeast Region’s annual event to raise awareness and philanthropic support to breed, raise, train and place these highly trained assistance dogs, free of charge, for adults and children with disabilities. This event is the region’s single largest fundraiser and last year’s event raised more than $280,000.

The 2011 event will be held on Saturday, November 12th at the Rosen Shingle Creek and includes a silent and live auction and a reception and program featuring animals from local professional animal trainer Joel Slaven. The dinner program features powerful presentations from two Canine Companions’ graduates who will tell their courageous stories and will describe how their assistance dogs have provided them with joy, friendship and independence. The Southeast Regional Center opened on Independence Day, July 4, 2000, and has provided more than 300 assistance dogs for adults and children with disabilities and has more than 300 volunteer puppy raisers.
