Celebrating its 24th year, the 2019 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival had a spectacular opening month as Orlando foodies treated themselves to chef demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and even special events like “Party for the Senses.” Featuring cuisines, music and more from around the globe, Epcot’s renowned celebration at Epcot is better than ever and it’s running for a record-shattering 87 days making it the longest festival in the park’s history. The “Eat to the Beat” concert series will showcase a wide range of musical acts and there’s also an entire menu of family fun, including Remy’s Ratatouille-inspired scavenger hunt, a play area, nightly dance parties, and select dishes and demonstrations designed especially for kids. Your Epcot admission is all that’s needed to participate in the festivities! SeaWorld is serving up an incredible party for craft beer lovers! This year, SeaWorld’s Craft Beer Festival extended to four weekends from September 7th-October 27th and admission is included with all park tickets! The festival features more than 100 craft brews on draft at locations around the park. In addition, guests also enjoy unique food items designed to perfectly pair with the festival’s brew selection. Attendees sampled an unbeatable mix of domestic, international and local Florida favorites while savoring more than 20 food items expertly paired to match their preferred brew. It is the one craft beer celebration you definitely don’t want to miss and the fun continues brewing every weekend till October 27th.

As fall approaches, the city of Orlando is on fire with fantastic events! Last month proved to be one of the best times for Central Floridians to explore the City Beautiful as crowds were low and the kickoff of fall left a joyful pep in every step. Here’s a look at just some of the incredible events that took place, just in case you missed it!

Nothing goes better with wine than cheese, so Lakeridge Winery celebrated this delicious pairing from September 14th-15th with their annual Wine & Cheese Festival. The event featured all the Lakeridge festival standards including live music, Lakeridge wine by the glass, beer, soft drinks and a variety of food available for purchase. Guests also enjoyed a special complimentary wine tasting including samples of cheese paired with some of their best selling wines. For almost 30 years, Lakeridge Winery has featured some of the areas top bands on their outdoor stage and the 2019 Wine & Cheese Festival line up was no exception. Visitors were encouraged to bring their lawn chairs in order to sit back and enjoy the live music along with the beautiful vineyards and surrounding rolling hills. Calling all style-setters! The Mall at Millenia’s annual Fashion Insider extravaganza took place from September 16th-22nd and guests enjoyed an array of activities custom designed for Orlando’s fashion enthusiasts. For the 14th year in a row, The Mall at Millenia held a series of fabulous events so guests could learn about the biggest fall trends and shop the season’s best looks. From viewing the hottest colors, patterns and outfits at the Fall Trends display to getting styled in head-to-toe looks from various Mall at Millenia

boutiques—attendees delighted in discovering the biggest color stories and wardrobe musthaves. Of course you can’t have “fashion” without a fashion show and on September 19th, the extravaganza featured its Fashion For A Cause runway show event which benefited our friends at Runway to Hope. The annual Run Nona 5K & Nemours Kids’ Run returned on September 28th for its 12th anniversary! The event included a 1-mile kids’ run as well as dashes for younger children and a 3.1-mile run/walk through Lake Nona. Outside of running, guests were invited to enjoy the live music entertainment and other activities happening around Town Center. All 5K finishers received a medal and proceeds from the event benefited the Tavistock Foundation. Unlike other 5Ks, Run Nona ended with a lively Block Party filled with fabulous music, complimentary beer and $5 coupons towards Town Center and Boxi Park restaurants. The family friendly event even featured The Nemours Kids’ Run and Zone that occupied the littlest runners with activities geared specifically to engage them in a night of activity. From September 16th-24th, guests celebrated the art of film and its power to promote new understanding in Orlando. Held in conjunction with the UN’s International Day of Peace, the Global Peace Film Festival promotes the art of motion picture to further the goal of peace on earth, beyond anti-war, ideology and activism. Events included film programs, panels, and parties. Established in 2003, The Global Peace Film Festival works to connect expression— artistic, political, social and personal—to positive, respectful vehicles for action and change. Named a Top-Rated Non-Profit by GreatNonprofits.org, the festival program is carefully curated to create a place for open dialogue, using the films as catalysts for change. September was the opening month of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and it was a sight to behold inviting Walt Disney World Resort guests to live out their Star Wars adventure in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. With all-new Star Wars Attractions like Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run, visitors could fly the millennium Falcon on a thrilling interactive smuggling mission. Over at Savi’s Workshop, guests built their own custom lightsaber while continuing the traditions of the force. When hunger called, the best in Galactic dining was there to answer the call from local beverages and curious concoctions at Oga’s Cantina to the incredible experience of eating in a working hangar at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. Whether you’re a Star Wars enthusiast or just a casual fan, there is so much to explore at the Galaxy’s Edge...now open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

ORLANDO DERMATOLOGIST DR. MICHAEL STEPPIE Associates In Dermatology Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, Associates in Dermatology proudly continues to deliver an unrivaled level of care to patients across 15 Central Florida communities.

Journal of Investigative Dermatology as well as on a breakthrough study on vitiligo.

“Our patients are loyal and love the dedicated care from our skilled dermatology providers, yet my focus is on healthy lifestyle habits and raising awareness and prevention,” Says Dr. Michael Steppie, its president and medical director.

Similar to his pioneering in skin cancer awareness, Dr. Steppie now recently responded to a call to action from the CDC and Florida Department of Health regarding the alarming rise of STI/STDs in the country and the state of Florida for four consecutive years.

Both the Dr. Phillips and Ocoee locations are “Centers of Excellence” in skin cancer treatment and include in-office laboratories as well as general and cosmetic dermatology services in addition to the treatment of the diseases of the skin, hair and nails. Dr. Steppie is a highly qualified Mohs micrographic skin cancer surgeon and last July 2019, he was recognized by his peers and elected as a fellow of the American College of Physicians; earlier in June, he also became a member of the national psoriasis foundation. Dr. Steppie is not your average dermatologist. In addition to being on the forefront of skin cancer treatment for decades, he is also engaged in advancing research and in life-saving awareness campaigns.

Not only an elite member of the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Amonette Circle for the last 10 consecutive years, Dr. Steppie also collaborated with Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute at Lake Nona on a melanoma study which was published in the

“I have always been curious by nature and I seek to be part of the solution.”

He has risen to the occasion and involved his team of skilled dermatology providers to increase awareness about these diseases, many symptoms of which will first present on the skin, making dermatologists among the first line of defense in the medical profession. “We see all generations of patients in our practice for any skin concern, from baby boomers, pregnant women, adolescents and young adults—all of whom could be affected by Hepatitis A, B or C, STI/STDs or HPV and need to know about prevention,” says Dr. Steppie. “Unfortunately there is often a stigma and taboo associated with this topic, but by having these conversations with our patients—who are like family members—we seek to normalize conversations around sexual health.” The legacy Dr. Steppie hopes to create by entering this new frontier is one of health and wellness for future generations of Floridians.

BANGZ PARK AVENUE SALON In 2017, Vanessa Minter became the new owner of Bangz Park Avenue Salon. It was famously one of the longest standing salons in the state, having held the same location for nearly three decades, but for Vanessa, it was much more than that. In Bangz she recognized opportunity— opportunity to grow, to share, and to contribute to the community of Orlando. In her vision for Bangz, the salon’s future was just as significant as its impressive past, and while its history had already upheld it as one of the staple landmarks of Winter Park, she wanted it to continue to grow in the community. In the years since Vanessa became the owner of Bangz, the salon has proved that it has more than enough potential to grow. Nestled in the heart of Park Avenue in Winter Park, Bangz is a small, boutique salon that emphasizes the quality of

service and the importance of experience. After partnering with Aveda, Vanessa took the values embraced by Aveda and incorporated them into every aspect of the salon. With her talented and valued team, Vanessa ensures that Bangz does not merely make their guests feel beautiful on the outside, but instead receive a personal and custom experience that touches soul to scalp. The quality of the Bangz’s work is the absolute priority of Vanessa’s team, and with Aveda, every product used to achieve their beautiful results is sourced from cruelty free and organic sources. While there has been much change at Bangz, it reflects the growth toward a future, and it is a vision that would be impossible without Vanessa’s team—but if you were to ask her, she would consider them family. The team at Bangz had consistently supported the values of the salon, and every day they work together to

create a better environment which can bolster the flourishing community. They are proud of the Bangz history, but they know that together they are paving the way to the bright future. Under the leadership of Vanessa, Bangz has also endeavored into extensive community work. Vanessa’s foundation, The Celeste Giving Light Foundation, provides complementary services to guests who are fighting various diseases and is also a partner of the Cancer Society of Florida. Last year, Bangz was proud to host Pink on Park, an event which benefitted Florida’s Breast Cancer Fund. Two years ago, Vanessa had a dream for what she imagined Bangz Park Avenue to be. Now, surrounded by her loving team and supportive guests, she is confident that Bangz will continue to set the bar for growing salons in Orlando.

LOUIS VUITTON EXPANSION AT THE MALL AT MILLENIA By Courtney Caggiano

This summer, The Mall at Millenia welcomed the expansion of Orlando’s Louis Vuitton store, with a redesigned and reimagined Women’s Store and a brand new Men’s Store, integrating the classic and cutting-edge savoir-faire of the renowned designer brand. The luxurious store update mirrors the mission and tradition that has been at the heart of Louis Vuitton since 1854, focusing on the brand’s endless pursuit of combining innovation and timeless design. The legacy of the House’s founder, Louis Vuitton, inventor of the true “Art of Travel” through quality luggage and bags, can be felt throughout the products within both stores, as well as in the aesthetics of the stores themselves. The expansion’s 5,000 square-foot newly revealed Women’s Store, which re-opened its doors on August 8, offers a myriad of opportunities to enjoy a high quality, personal shopping experience. Here, clients enter a garden of possibility and discovery as they step into an enchanting escape signature to the brand’s original purpose. With an atmosphere of feminine touches, the store brings the quintessential Louis Vuitton woman to life, as fresh bouquets of flowers greet you with a soft and subtle color palette reflected throughout every aspect of the store. The store also provides women with personalization of leather bags and trunks, as well as a fragrance engraving service, allowing clients to customize scents within the Les Perfumes Louis Vuitton collection. Launched on May 22, the store meets clients with a refreshing take on an exclusive fashion experience, featuring an unparalleled collection designed by Virgil Abloh, in which the brand’s original hardware and tonality meets a modern, updated approach to men’s leather bags. Filled with original artwork by Pierre Malbec and Robert Petrick, the Louis

Vuitton Men’s Store adds a bright, contemporary touch to the brand’s seasonal ready-to-wear pieces, leathers, shoes, accessories, and fragrance. THE CHAINSMOKERS World War Joy Tour – Live in Orlando By Courtney Caggiano

Grammy Award-winning producers and artists The Chainsmokers are bringing their highly-anticipated World War Joy North American Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center on Saturday, October 26. Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart, better known by their stage name, The Chainsmokers, were recently revealed to be the highest paid DJs of 2019, overthrowing Calvin Harris after six years at the top of the list. However, with their incomparable ability to churn out hit after hit, like their fan-favorite pop anthem, “Closer,” featuring Halsey, America’s most coveted music duo is well deserving of this title. The EDM-pop collaboration first found fame with their 2014 song, “#Selfie,” and not long after, The Chainsmokers have garnered much more than a Grammy award, including two American Music Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, and nine iHeartRadio Music Awards. Before combining their talents to become the now-global sensation they are, The Chainsmokers were very well versed in the world of artistry. While studying art history at New York University, Pall worked at an art gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan, and Taggart, living in Maine, had released original solo tracks on SoundCloud. By 2013, the freshly-formed

DJ team had begun recording, followed by their first live performance at New York’s Terminal 5 in 2014. After gaining recognition by covering songs from indie artists, The Chainsmokers began featuring vocal performances by some of pop’s most iconic singers, beginning in 2016 with “Don’t Let Me Down,” a Grammy-winning track with vocals from American singer Daya. On the heels of these musical partnerships, in 2017, the DJs released their debut album, Memories…Do Not Open, which reached platinum status, climbing to the number one spot in the U.S. on the Billboard 200 chart. The DJs’ chart-topping collaborations include “Something Just Like This” featuring Coldplay and “This Feeling” featuring Kelsea Ballerini. Over the previous two years, The Chainsmokers have crafted groundbreaking songs that have turned into multi-platinum hits, and their breakthrough “Closer” became the longest-running number one single of 2016 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The growing success of the producers’ new star-filled singles led to an exclusive three-year residency deal with Wynn Nightlife. The Chainsmokers’ latest creation features the Australian pop-rock band, 5 Seconds

of Summer. Released in February 2019, “Who Do You Love” skyrocketed to number one on iTunes and stands as the DJs’ lead single from their upcoming studio album, World War Joy. Respectfully dubbed the “biggest new rock act in the world” by Rolling Stone, 5 Seconds of Summer has become the only band in history to have its first three fulllength studio albums enter the Billboard chart at number one. 5 Seconds of Summer found international success with their third album, “Youngblood” along with the album’s title track, which reached number one on Apple Music’s biggest pop playlist, Today’s Hits, and Spotify’s Today’s Top Hits playlist, bringing in two billion digital streams. Fans of 5 Seconds of Summer will be thrilled to learn that the Aussie group is joining The Chainsmokers on their World War Joy Tour on all dates, the perfect opening act—and potential collaboration—for a vibrant, star-studded night of music. The Chainsmokers’ World War Joy North American Tour is your chance to experience the duo’s first ever Amway Center performance, so be sure to grab your tickets before they sell out.

CELEBRITY SOUP

The One With The Anniversary It’s been 25 years, and Friends is still going strong! By Riesa Pascal 15 years have passed since we said our goodbyes to the beloved sitcom Friends, but September brought about the 25th anniversary of the show and fans around the world are celebrating the milestone anniversary in spectacular fashion. Friends originally aired on September 22, 1994 and went on to become one of the most popular television shows of all time. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer quickly became household names as viewers around the world fell in love with their onscreen portrayals of six Manhattan-based friends: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross. 25 years later, the Friends mania has yet to die down and we have its move to Netflix to thank in part for that. Friends was the most-binged show of 2018, and though it wasn’t originally slated for renewal, an uproar from fans resulted in the streaming service renewing the series at a reported cost of nearly $100 million. Needless to say, the timeless show has remained a mainstay of television so it should come as no surprise that there were big things in store to celebrate its 25th anniversary. As part of a series of promotions celebrating the hit comedy’s premiere, 30 replicas of the iconic orange couch—seen at Central Perk and in the show’s opening credits—went on tour last month to diverse locations around the world. From the Grand Canyon and the Empire State Building to Stonehenge and the Eiffel Tower, fabric and waterproof versions of the sofa were placed at key locations around the world surrounding the September 22nd anniversary date. Even Lego got in on the anniversary action by releasing a Central Perk Lego set now available for purchase. Still, the biggest celebration of them all allowed die-hard fans to relive the ‘90s sitcom on the big screen for the first time ever. In order to celebrate Friends’ 25th premiere anniversary, movie theaters across the country held a special twelve-episode, three-night event. Screenings took place on September 23rd and September 28th, with one more occurring this month on October 2nd. Each night included four different episodes, never-before-seen content, and exclusive interviews all in 4K high definition. Take a look at the iconic episodes that aired and see how many YOU remember! Sept. 22 episodes: Pilot – ReDo, The One With The Black Out, The One With The Birth, and The One Where Ross Finds Out. Sept. 28 episodes: The One With The Prom Video, The One Where No One’s Ready, The One With The Morning After, and The One With The Embryos. Oct. 2 episodes: The One With Chandler In A Box, The One With Ross’s Wedding – Part 2, The One Where Everybody Finds Out, and The One Where Ross Got High Did you know other titles considered for the show were “Insomnia Cafe,” “Friends Like Us,” “Six of One,” and “Across the Hall”?

Turn on the news and it seems that the medical establishment has changed its collective mind, yet again. Eggs are bad for you. Well, maybe just have a few. Actually, go wild—eggs are great. Bacteria was our enemy and now we are purposefully downing it—yogurt, kombucha—bring me my daily probiotic! What to eat for breakfast is certainly not the biggest decision you will have to make today, but what are you supposed to do about protecting your breast health may be. And depending on which doctor you ask, you may get entirely different opinions. Here’s why. To understand how effective mammograms are, you need to first understand that it is an imperfect test. Sometimes they don’t find a breast cancer that is there and, more often, something might look like a breast cancer, but it is found to be completely benign. Doctors would rather be on the safe side and so, when something looks even slightly suspicious, women will get called back for additional images and might even wind up getting a biopsy. The odds of this happening to most women is actually much higher than being diagnosed with breast cancer. And it turns out, the younger you are, the more likely this is to occur. That’s because younger breasts are denser (making it harder to find breast cancers on mammograms) and also because fewer young women get breast cancer (though when they do it tends to be the more aggressive kind). So, if something lights up on a mammogram in a younger woman, it is more likely to be benign. If something lights up on a mammogram in an older woman, it is more likely to be an actual breast cancer. According to the United States Preventive Task Force (USPSTF), the agency responsible for making screening test recommendations for the country, if

10,000 women aged 60-69 are screened with mammograms for 10 years, 21 breast cancer deaths will be prevented. If 10,000 women aged 50-59 are screened for 10 years, 8 deaths will be prevented. And if 10,000 women aged 40-49 are screened for 10 years, only 3 deaths will be prevented. So, the USPSTF has recommended that unless women have a family history of breast cancer, or other factors that put them at higher risk for developing breast cancer, it is okay to wait until age 50 to start screening. And once they start, says the USPSTF, women of average risk need only get their mammograms every other year. The internal medicine and family practice societies agreed with the USPSTF. But wait a minute! What about those 3 women in their 40s?

When this recommendation was first announced, the medical societies for the obstetrician-gynecologists and the radiologists shouted their disapproval. Loudly. Not only were lives still going to be potentially lost, but the radiologists decreed that the studies the USPSTF scientists were using was based on older technology. Mammograms had gotten better, they insisted. Women should start at 40 and get their mammograms every year. More than 3 lives were surely being saved for every 10,000 women screened with mammograms. So, who were women and their doctors supposed to listen to? Cue the American Cancer Society!

In an effort to make peace, perhaps split the difference, and maybe save women and their doctors from going crazy, the American Cancer Society came out with their recommendation a short time later. Women should start getting mammograms at age 45, they decided, in an attempt to maximize benefit and minimize risk of unnecessary biopsies. Women in their 40s, because they get more aggressive, faster-

growing cancers, should be screened every year and women 55 and older could switch to every-other-year. That should have settled it, right? Wrong.

Instead of everyone coming together around the seemingly unbiased American Cancer Society guidelines, three options were created instead of two for average risk women: 1. Begin screening at age 40 and get mammograms every year; 2. Begin screening at age 50 and get mammograms every other year; or 3. Begin screening at age 45 and get mammograms every year until age 55 when you can start going every other year. So, which option is right for which woman? Any of them are reasonable, but most women physicians I know start their mammograms at age 40. And every lawyer I know would tell me to recommend that you do too. We can’t know who the 3 in 10,000 women whose lives will be saved by screening mammograms will be. We will just have to take comfort in the fact that when we get called back for close-up pictures of “something” the radiologist saw, we are more likely to be among the thousands of women whose most challenging health decision the next day will be whether or not to try the new kombucha. IN THE KNOW

Paying OVERTIME Without OVERPAYING Florida is one of the busiest states when it comes to federal lawsuits involving unpaid overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This has created for some employers a heightened awareness of the requirements. For example, most employers are aware that simply paying a salary does not, by itself, make an employee exempt from overtime pay. Unfortunately, many employers believe they must revert back to paying certain employees an hourly rate if their employees do not fall within any applicable exemption.

Mark NeJame

Richard W. Smith

Richard W. Smith, Partner at NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article

58

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Paying employees a salary, however, may be the best option for an employer. Under the FLSA, employers are required to pay overtime at a rate not less than one and one-half times an employee’s regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 in a given workweek. What many employers do not realize is that, under certain circumstances, an employer has an option of how to calculate “one and one-half times the regular rate” under the fluctuating workweek overtime calculation. Using such calculation, an employee may be paid a fixed salary to cover all hours worked in a given workweek, whether that is 40 hours, below 40 hours, or above 40 hours. There must be a clear and mutual understanding between the employee and employer that the salary paid is for all hours worked in the workweek. The employee’s effective hourly rate (i.e. the fixed salary divided by the number of all hours worked in the week) may fluctuate from week to week depending on the number of hours worked. Under this method, the employer would only need to pay an additional half-time pay for hours over 40, as it has already paid the employee for all of his straighttime compensation, (i.e. the weekly salary). Instead of paying one and one-half times the regular pay for each hour over 40 in a given workweek, the employer essentially feels as if it is only paying the half-time rate for hours over 40. The U.S. Department of Labor, in its regulations, provides an illustration of the application of the fluctuating workweek method:

The application . . . may be illustrated by the case of an employee whose hours of work do not customarily follow a regular schedule but vary from week to week, whose total weekly hours of work never exceed 50 hours in a workweek, and whose salary of $600 a week is paid with the understanding that it constitutes the employee’s compensation, except for overtime premiums, for whatever hours are worked in the workweek. If during the course of 4 weeks this employee works 40, 37.5, 50, and 48 hours, the regular hourly rate of pay in each of these weeks is $15.00, $16.00, $12.00, and $12.50, respectively. Since the employee has already received straight-time compensation on a salary basis for all hours worked, only additional half-time pay is due. For the first week the employee is entitled to be paid $600; for the second week $600.00; for the third week $660 ($600 plus 10 hours at $6.00, or 40 hours at $12.00 plus 10 hours at $18.00); for the fourth week $650 ($600 plus 8 hours at $6.25, or 40 hours at $12.50 plus 8 hours at $18.75). 29 C.F.R. §778.114(b). While the fluctuating workweek method of calculating overtime will not work for every non-exempt employee, it certainly is a tool employers should consider for those employees who do not fall within any clear FLSA exemption and whose hours fluctuate weekly. Likewise, it may be particularly useful in situations where an employer is unclear as to whether an employee should be classified as exempt or not. By paying such employees using the fluctuating workweek method, the employer may avoid the risk and uncertainty of FLSA litigation. There are, of course, a number of pitfalls the employer will need to avoid and should consult an attorney knowledgeable of the FLSA and applicable Department of Labor regulations.

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Our Story: Dr. Nadya Aldochine created Life Enhancing Dentistry just two short years ago with a vision to help patients experience dentistry in a positive, friendly environment, with a doctor who can be their advocate at all times. This practice is for patients that are seeking relationship centered care with excellent customer service and who value their health and their smile by being proactive about their dental needs. Dr. Nadya and her entire team believe that quality dentistry truly improves people’s lives. Our Mission: To help patients achieve and maintain their oral health care in an environment of trust, integrity, and quality. Our Passion: Here at Life Enhancing Dentistry we work with each patient individually to understand their mindset, their goals, and empowering even the most fearful patients to understand and overcome their anxiety. Dr. Nadya firmly believes in comprehensive care, she is passionate about helping patients with all levels of dental knowledge see the big picture when it comes to making important decisions about their next step of care. Whether it’s a small child that is heading off track with their dental health, a busy mother that sacrificed herself to care for others, or a person planning for a happy retirement, we strive to help people think positively and to create a unique plan for them, which matches their values and concerns.

Who We Owe Our Success To: Dr. Nadya has been practicing dentistry for 10 years and has always been grateful for the dental education she received in Rutgers Dental School followed by a general practice residency at the prestigious Morristown Memorial Hospital in NJ. Since that time, she has met some of the most inspiring and successful dentists in U.S. and has been fortunate to have excellent mentorship while working as an associate for 7 years. She also understands the value her team brings to her practice and says “I cannot never take all the credit for the growth of our practice because I realize how many people it takes to make it so successful!” On A Personal Level: Dr. Nadya Aldochine was born and raised in Russia and was fortunate to immigrate to U.S. at the age of 9. She recently relocated to Orlando from NJ and resides in Lake Nona with her husband Dr. Nelson Medina, her 3-year-old son Nicholas, and they are blessed to have another baby girl on the way. Her other passion lies in competitive Latin ballroom dancing and beach volleyball as well as outdoor sports and enjoying boating and the beach life with her husband. She really values personal and spiritual growth and invests her time weekly studying with a John Maxwell leadership coach. She also belongs to a Mastermind group of like-minded dentists to stay current with the demands of business ownership.

What Sets Us Apart: Every dental practice starts with great leadership. Dr. Nadya invests a significant amount of her time getting to know and developing the people on her team so that they clearly understand her vision and the value of providing great service to others. As a team we are constantly working to improve ourselves in areas of communication, customer service, consistent education, and great systems. On a clinical level small details like painless anesthesia, a “comfort menu,” top rated products and materials, new equipment, accurate insurance benefit verification, relaxing music, and online appointment scheduling help to make the patient experience much more pleasant. From the moment the patient walks in the door, our duty is to keep them comfortable and well cared for.

DR. DAVID AKKARA Hillcrest Dental

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” - Mother Teresa of Calcutta From a young age, I was touched by this quote, and never have truer words defined the scope of my life. A smile is the simplest compliment we can give, and yet it is more powerful than words. I knew at an early age that my primary goal would be to help people smile: smile easily and joyfully. Fear is a big factor that prevents people from seeking needed oral care. My life’s second mission was to take the fear away from dentistry. I work tirelessly to fulfill my life’s mission, and I believe I have accomplished this. The feedback from our patients has always been that they have experienced the most relaxed and happiest dental visit of their lives. With our generous reviews to the 10,000 likes on Facebook, I continue my singular purpose to make dentistry fun.

VARSHA GANESSINGH D.M.D. Oasis Dental Dr. Varsha Ganessingh knew that she wanted to be a dentist at a very young age. At the tender age of six years old, she would use her fingers to wiggle and extract her deciduous teeth with ease, almost as if it were second nature. Also, her aunt, who was a dentist, inspired her to pursue dentistry as a career. After graduating from the University of Florida in 2000, she attended Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. Four years later, she graduated with her Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD) Degree. Shortly after, the City Beautiful came calling, and she has been practicing here in Orlando ever since.

In 2011, she started up her own practice, Oasis Dental, in downtown Orlando. She has consistently been voted annually by her peers as one of Orlando’s Top Dentists, since 2007. Dr. G (as her patients and staff call her), believes that dentistry should be practiced from the heart. A professor of hers years ago in dental school, mentioned in one of his lectures, that they needed to treat every patient as if it were their mother in the chair. Almost 15 years later, these words still reverberate in her head, and is the principle behind how she chooses to practice dentistry. Dr. G loves all aspects of dentistry but gets a special fulfillment from cosmetic dentistry. She has witnessed patients go from being insecure and not wanting to smile, to being more confident and not wanting to stop smiling! This has changed a lot of patients’ lives for the better, and she loves that she is able to help make that happen. In her spare time, Dr. G enjoys spending time with her husband Raj and her five year old twin daughters, Arya and Raya. She is an avid animal lover, and has a pomeranian Sassy, a cat Tux, and two conures Phoeny and Pyro.

Dr. Ryan Mendro earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Florida, his Doctor of Dental Surgery at Columbia University, and his Master of Science and Certificate in Periodontics also at the University of Florida. Dr. Lucia Roca Mendro received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Francisco Marroquin University, her Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Connecticut and completed her Periodontics residency and received her Master of Dental Science at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Both doctors are Diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology, and are active members of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, and Florida Association of Periodontists. They are published authors and remain active in the dental community and serve as members in several professional organizations. Rest assured, you can expect quality, expert care and the most advanced state of the art treatment options. At Precision Periodontics and Dental Implants, the team is committed to providing the latest technology, such as LANAP; Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, a specialized treatment for gum disease. Additionally, both doctors provide the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), a revolutionary alternative to conventional gum grafting for the treatment of receding gums. Both procedures are minimally invasive and do not require the use of any scalpels or stitches. Additionally, Dr. Ryan L. Mendro and Dr. Lucia Roca Mendro use computed tomography, or 3D scan technology. This technology can allow for the removal of hopeless teeth with the simultaneous placement of dental implants (tooth root replacements). An artificial full set of teeth can be made and attached to the dental implants, which provides an instant and permanent hold that eliminates the risk of looseness or slipping associated with traditional dentures. Sometimes this entire procedure can be performed in just a single day! These implant-supported teeth are designed to look, feel and function just like regular teeth. Treating your gum disease, receding gums and replacing your missing teeth has never been easier! In their spare time the doctors enjoy cooking, working out, outdoor activities, spending time together with their son Matteo and are looking forward to welcoming their new baby boy this Fall.

SOUTHPARK DENTAL GROUP Dr. John Cervenka, Dr. Shauna Coen, Dr. Yadiris Reiter, Dr. Diana Gomez, Dr. Jesse Edwards, Dr. Leah Ladley Our mission at Southpark Dental Group is to provide the highest quality of comprehensive dental care to our patients. At Southpark we strive to be at the forefront of technology and to educate our patients for optimal oral health and ultimately overall body health. Southpark Dental Group is one of the few offices in the state to provide Laser dental and facial cosmetic procedures. We have been creating beautiful smiles for almost 25years, now we are adding lip plumping and smoothing of fine lines to our services. This same Laser is being used to treat snoring by tightening and toning tissue in the soft palate. Once the tissue is tight there is a great reduction in vibration with snorers and more airflow passing through. One of our newest diagnostic tools is a CT scanner. This cone beam X-ray takes a 3-D view of the patient’s jaw. This is essential for accurate placement of dental implants, detecting fractures, and diagnosing abnormalities in the bone. Along with the newest advances in dental technology, Southpark Dental Group offers CEREC all porcelain crowns and veneers in a single visit. In fact, our office is equipped with the most Cerec units in the area and has been doing CEREC crowns for nineteen years. CEREC technology

has revolutionized dentistry by allowing a crown/veneer/bridge to be made and put in within a couple of hours. Our patients no longer have to wear a temporary crown and return in a couple of weeks to have it placed in permanently. In addition we have an on site laboratory to fabricate bridges, implant crowns, and shade matching. At the forefront of this cutting edge technology, Dr. John Cervenka is a pioneer in CEREC dentistry using and teaching it for over eighteen years. Now our group of highly trained CEREC doctors has grown to include Dr. Shauna Coen, Dr. Yadiris Reiter, Dr. Diana Gomez, and Dr. Jesse Edwards. New medical findings have linked gum disease with diabetes and coronary artery disease. The correlation between gum health and overall systemic health is top priority for our dentists. Our Periodontitis, Dr. Leah Ladley, is certified in LANAP and LAPIP Laser treatment to treat periodontal disease and inflammation in the gums. Our state of the art dental practice strives to make patients feel as comfortable as possible. In addition to our caring and compassionate staff we have added heated massaging chairs to each treatment room. The bay window view of our tranquil garden makes patents feel like they are at the spa. On a personal note: “I have an obsessive curiosity and with God’s help, I studied the Bible and then the actions of the universe, I always wondered how time was able to be individually relative according to Einstein’s general relativity and how particles could communicate their states of action through entanglement instantly over distance, no time delay. To make a long story short, I received a patent for 20 years, issued 01/01/2019 for a new communications system which, I think, allows us to control a unique way to communicate anywhere we set it up in space instantly, without any time delay. Is it faster than light? No, there is no forward speed to the concept of instantaneous. It’s a complete different process than using speed. Anyhow, stay tuned who knows... I think maybe, a book, God, the Bible and the universe... ..and now a word from our Sponsor...”

DR. WIEWIORA & DR. DUNN Wiewiora & Dunn Orthodontics

Dr. Cara Wiewiora grew up in Central Florida. She went to Lake Mary High School and the University of Florida for her undergraduate and dental education. After dental school, she went to Louisiana State University for her orthodontic residency. Dr. Wiewiora practiced as an associate doctor for a few years before she decided to purchase the practice where she received her orthodontic treatment as a child. Dr. Richard Dunn was her orthodontist growing up and he inspired her to become an orthodontist herself. Almost 20 years later, they are now colleagues and work alongside each other. They both make patient care their priority and they love creating confident smiles. Dr. Wiewiora has said, “patients that come to Wiewiora and Dunn Orthodontics expect a high level of care. My staff and I are dedicated to listen to your concerns and give you the smile of your dreams. It’s a special journey and I love being a part of it.” Dr. Dunn has been practicing orthodontics in the Central Florida area for over 40 years. He has put braces on generations of families. He also grew up here in Central Florida and attended Bishop Moore High School where he is still an active part of the alumni association. He collaborates with

Dr. Wiewiora on each patient’s treatment plan. Between Dr. Wiewiora’s knowledge of technology, like digital scanning, 3D x-rays and clear aligners (Invisalign), and Dr. Dunn’s clinical and practice management experience, our practice is perfectly balanced. At Wiewiora and Dunn Orthodontics our clinical philosophy is to first to pay attention to the patient’s or parent’s concerns. From there we take a variety of records and x-rays to see if treatment is necessary during a free consultation appointment. There are few orthodontists that have a 3D x-ray unit, but Wiewiora and Dunn Orthodontics has one for advanced cases. We monitor our younger patients starting at 7 years old just in case early intervention is required for proper growth and/or eruption. It is also never too late to get the smile you have always wanted. We have had patients in braces and Invisalign well into their 70’s! We have two locations - One in Altamonte Springs/Longwood, off State Road 434 and one in Lake Mary off Rinehart Road. The whole office staff travels between the two offices and patients have the choice to make their appointments in either office.
