From the Kirkwood Collection

THERE IS A MOMENT WHEN IMAGINATION BECOMES INNOVATION. Perhaps no one captures this moment more often than Sir Richard Branson. Of course, this doesn’t happen by chance. It happens because he pursues vision. Relentlessly. That is why he wears Bulova Accutron. The timepiece that reinvents accuracy time and again.

Spitfire Chronograph. Ref. 3878: Back in the days of the dogfights, there was no technology to do the flying for you. A pilot who wanted to get the most out of his Spitfire needed to have an eye on every detail. The same goes today for an IWC Spitfire Chronograph, incidentally: the big central seconds hand together with the day and date displays and the propeller-inspired hour and minute hands are all within the pilot’s field of vision. And that could hardly be more appealing. Mechanical chronograph movement | Self-winding | 68-hour power reserve when fully wound | Date display | Stopwatch function with minutes and seconds | Flyback function | Small hacking seconds | Double-pawl winding | Screw-in crown | Sapphire glass, convex, antireflective coating on both sides | Water-resistant 6 bar | Stainless steel |

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> Please don’t fail to cast your vote, in this, the most pivotal presidential contest most of us have ever experienced. It’s almost humorous that we’re debating which candidate cares most about dogs! Think of the silliness of the Obama campaign’s focus on a 30-year old Romney dog travel episode, followed by the Romney campaign touting an anecdote from Obama’s memoir in which the ‘prez’ mentions having once consumed dog meat! All this followed by Obama surrogates defending his dog meat-eating days on TV. So, if you think this election campaign has “gone to the dogs,” check out our entertaining editorial about ‘Bark’ Obama vs. ‘Mutt’ Romney “Give Paws a Chance,” on page 48. Speak of voting, thanks to all of the thousands of readers who have already cast their ballots for the best in our city, the “2012 Readers’ Choice Award.” The winners, announced in this issue, should contact us at info@styletome.com to collect their certificate. As in past years, our luxury issue is supported by a great story “Luxury on Steroids,” along with an amazing luxury fashion shoot “Catch a Thief,” somewhat loosely connected to the fantastic movie of a similar name. Please let me have your thoughts and/or comments about ‘luxury.’ Thinking about a great holiday gift idea? Well, Santa is beginning to rev up his sleigh mobile so why not let us arrange to have ‘Orlando Style Magazine’ ‘slide’ its way into your mailbox by becoming a privileged subscriber for yourself or a friend? Simply go online right now at www. styletome.com choose ‘Get Magazines’ – ‘Subscribe,’ sign up and we’ll do the rest. Out of the first 100 new subscribers/members automatically entered, five will win a $100 prize! Our new subscriber campaign has already begun online in our ‘NEWSTOME’ newsletter to all members, and will end on December 10th with the winners announced on December 14th. Please don’t let this opportunity slip your mind so hurry to get into the drawing. We wish you all a safe, and wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.< Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

The power of simplicity

Ghost is the essence of Rolls-Royce in its purest form. Discreet technology and a new V12 engine make for effortless, rewarding driving; while the uncluttered interior cossets every occupant. Simplicity may be hard to achieve, but it’s always worth the effort.

OUR TOWN

> So, you have just been in an auto accident or have been injured by another. Sounds like a commercial already, right? Well, accidents and injuries happen every few minutes, and many really don’t know what they should do when an injury occurs. First, you need to immediately collect all of the information about your accident or injury, if you are physically able to do so. More specifically, you need the names of the parties involved in the accident/altercation and the names of any witnesses. Much of this can be accomplished by immediately calling the police so that an accident/arrest report is generated. You should also have photographs taken of the scene with your cell phone or digital camera. Most importantly, you may need medical attention. Even if you feel fine or just a little bit sore, you will want to rule out any potential injuries; some injuries can take several days to appear. Keep in mind, an insurance company may use the fact that you did not immediately seek medical care against you.

Lawyers & Your Injury... The Basics By Mark E. NeJame, Esquire Contributing writer Benjamin W. Loving, Esquire of NeJame Law Read more at: StyleToMe.com

STYLETOME.COM

You will want to contact your insurance company or hire an attorney to contact them for you. Selecting an attorney is an important decision and far more important than many realize. Many people choose an attorney purely on the advertising they see on television or on billboards. This can be a dire mistake as not all attorneys are created equal and the quality of your attorney can greatly impact your potential recovery. What you want is a lawyer who knows how to settle your case when appropriate but who is also a great litigator who knows when and how to take a case to trial. You should keep in mind that if you are injured by no fault of your own, chance are you will only get “one bite at the apple” for a recovery, meaning you cannot go back and ask for more money if your injuries worsen or you require more treatment. Hiring the wrong attorney can cost you for the rest of your life. When interviewing for an attorney, don’t be timid in asking about their trial experience. Ask what types of cases they have tried, is-

sues they have encountered, and what their background in handling comparable cases is. It is also important to determine whether your lawyer can truly afford to handle your case. Many firms take cases but shortchange their clients because they don’t advance the money necessary to properly prepare the case for trial or to best advance the client’s position in negotiations. Some lawyers don’t do this because they don’t have the requisite funds to do so.This area is so important and so frequently overlooked by the client, as most simply assume the attorney will advance whatever costs are needed, when often that’s not the case.

“Most importantly, you may need medical attention. Even if you feel fine or just a little bit sore, you will want to rule out any potential injuries; some injuries can take several days to appear.” If you don’t feel that your current attorney is representing your best interests, you are free to fire that attorney and hire another. If you are considering firing your attorney it is only fair to first meet with them. Like any relationship, good communication is essential. Oftentimes, the client is unaware of the work being done on their case. Be realistic in your expectations though. Your lawyer may be doing a good job but what the facts, injuries and law allow may be quite different than your desires. However, you don’t want to be seduced by another lawyer who only tells you what you want to hear. Rather, look strongly at what work the lawyer has done for you and evaluate the lawyer on their actions. See how they line up with their words. If they don’t, a change may be in order. Remember, information is power. If you are hurt by another, immediately gathering the information you need and researching information on the attorney you will choose can be essential to your recovery. <

> Like a fine wine that gets better with age, there’s one event that set the tone for the elite social gatherings of the past couple of months and gave me the pleasure of discovering that aging is not the monster we dread. Turning 75 years young with style, grace and dignity this year, the SPCA of Central Florida ushered in the major milestone with its Diamond Anniversary Gala: A Tribute to the Gold Standard of Compassion on September 15th. The black-tie affair, hosted at the Full Sail Live Venue, exuded elegance with a formal dinner provided by Emeril’s Tchoup Chop, entertainment by the Dave Capp Project and silent and live auctions. Money raised went toward SPCA programs providing shelter to pets of families in crisis, food and veterinary care for pets of needy senior citizens and summer camps for children. For the young or young at heart, this Diamond Anniversary Gala exemplified agelessness as raising funds for a good cause, never goes out of style. For uber-foodies who balk at the notion of a “food coma” and are on a constant quest to quench their gluttonous cravings, the Second Annual Orlando Food & Wine Weekends September 28th-October 5th was the ultimate destination for pursuit of all things tasty. Part of a six weekend event, luxury resort Waldorf Astoria Orlando and its sister resort Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek featured exclusive tasting menus and wine pairings from master chefs throughout the country. One event highlight had a Latin

flare with Waldorf Astoria’s Aquamarine outdoor poolside bar and grille which offered an interactive capirihnas and mojito bar, cigar roller, flamenco dancers, tapas, and new world Spanish wines. The Orlando Food & Wine Weekends is an event that was created as a complement to the wildly popular Epcot International Food & Wine Festival held at Disney. The food and wine roller coaster in October went speeding through to its next stop on October 12th and 13th at the 3rd Annual Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic. This year, the event brought celebrity chefs Todd English and Michael Mina into the mix. Guests had a lot on their plates during the two-day celebration with samplings of food, wine and beer from around the world. The event also featured, seven beverage seminars, live entertainment and more than 30 food and beverage stations which included selections from Shula’s Steak House, Il Mulino New York Trattoria and Todd English’s Bluezoo. For those who indulge in the sport of pursuing the ultimate place to see and be seen, found they were right at home at the League of Their Own VIP Event at ONE80 Grey Goose Lounge on October 5th. Orlando Style Magazine and Blueprint Style PR joined forces in celebration of Orlando Style’s October issue, featuring some of Central Florida’s most successful women in business. In honor of Breast Cancer

Awareness Month, the event also served dual purpose by helping to raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. ONE80’s mixologist whipped up a special Pink Ribbon Cocktail for the affair. Good food, libations and stylish people together for a good cause as guests dined on delectable hors d’oeurves from Timpano Italian Chophouse while enjoying a silent auction. Models on the catwalk capped off the night with a fashion showcase featuring Bloomingdale’s Orlando. We go from the catwalk at ONE80 to a dog day’s night at the Rosen Shingle Creek on October 6th. The 16th Annual Tales & Tails Gala benefiting the Southeast Region of Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) took a walk on the wild side this year. The event featured, Sea World/Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove Animal Ambassador, Julie Scardina who brought an array of her exotic animal friends with her to educate and wow the crowd.Volunteer puppy raiser, Andrea Batchelor was honored with the Golden Leash Award for her dedication for the past 10 years for her many roles to help enhance the lives of others. All proceeds from the event went directly to CCI, which provides highly trained assistance dogs free of charge to children and adults with disabilities. < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

Luxury ON STEROIDS

Celebrity Style

By Alyssa Thomann

> Living life as a celebrity means living the life of luxury. Put two of those celebrities together and in love and we’ve got a couple of high rollers willing to dish out the cash to give their sweeties what they want. When I think about luxury I think about the Michael Kors watch my boyfriend bought me last Christmas or that time we went out sailing in Canada. Celebrities think about luxury a bit differently. They take what I consider luxurious and put it on steroids. Just this year there have been some lavish purchases and plans made by some of Hollywood’s hottest couples.

Indulging his sweetheart with a one million dollar birthday party on a private island should show his gratitude for his sleek new whip. With help planning from the other Kardashian sisters, Khloe and Kourtney, they were able to turn private island, Pine Cay in the Turks and Caicos, into party island. Pine Cay was swarming with some of Kim’s closest celebrity friends and family, a five-star chef and heaps of lavish gifts. It must be difficult birthday shopping for a woman who has it all, so why not get her an island? There is no island necessary for couple, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, this birthday, only the open waters and the South of France – oh and a private super-yacht! Beyoncé, who turned 31 this September, decided to spend this year’s birthday a bit less flashy and lot more intimate with a luxurious, private yacht trip through the Mediterranean Sea in the South of France. > The 2013 Agera R has all the features and functionalities of previous year models, but also features new and unique solutions to enhance performance and visual appearance even further. Example of these enhancements are; Visible carbon area on the front bonnet and bumper, new front side winglets, revolutionary Aircore carbon fiber wheels, the new Aero exhaust, the increased power and the raised rpm limit. Koenigsegg was the first Hypercar manufacturer to take steps toward green technology with the release of the biofuel CCXR in 2007. The Agera R, based on the highly competitive Agera, follows in the footsteps of the CCXR as it also runs on E85 biofuel. Among many differences to the standard Agera, the Agera R has an upgraded fuel and engine management system with enough flow capacity to generate 1140 hp and 1200 nm of torque on E85 and E100 biofuel. As there is less energy content per given volume in these biofuels compared to normal petrol, the fuel-system has to manage a flow that is similar to a 2000hp petrol engine, which means that the Agera R’s return-less fuel system has the highest capacity of any car presently in production.

of the turbine wheel and axle and therefore gives improved response. Koenigsegg reinvents the wheel and presents other exciting features for the 2013 Agera range. 1. The 2013 Agera R features the world’s first hollow, one piece, super light carbon fiber wheel, using a proprietary method developed by Koenigsegg named Aircore™ Technology. The Aircore™ wheels save close to 20kg in unsprung mass, while providing great integrity and safety. The only metal part in the wheel is the tire valve – the rest is all once piece hollow carbon. 2. The Agera and the Agera R have the first production engines in the world to use nano-surfaced cylinder sleeves, from ANS, for reduced friction and fuel consumption. 3. New in-house developed engine management system, which provides added functionality whilst still meeting all OBD II regulations.

5. Koenigsegg reinstates its co-operation with Swedish shock manufacturer Öhlins Racing. Together they productionalized Koenigsegg´s unique Triplex suspension, that becomes standard on the 2013 Agera R. 6. KES (Koenigsegg Electronic Stability) is now standard on all Koenigsegg models. 7. A new, lighter rear exhaust section has been developed for the Agera R, which also improves the performance of the rear diffuser. 8. New front/side winglets for the Agera R provide 20kg more downforce at 250km/h, as well as reduced drag. <

As the Agera R is a flexfuel car, it can also be run on normal petrol. As 95 octane fuel has less octane than E85, the power is reduced to 960hp with 1100nm of torque due to the boost pressure and ignition timing being altered to match the fuel characteristics. In order to give the Agera R maximum flexibility when it comes to power delivery, Koenigsegg has implement the latest technology when it comes to turbo materials and design. This reduces the inertia

Tips to a Happier,

Healthier

Thanksgiving THIS YEAR BE THANKFUL FOR A THANKSGIVING YOU GET TO ENJOY WITHOUT THE WEIGHT GAIN!

By Riesa Pascal Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> When it comes to being thankful, we have plenty to be thankful for. As we all know, Thanksgiving is right around the corner and when that day finally comes, most of us are all thankful for the same thing – good food and lots of it! Something that we aren’t so thankful for afterwards? The guilt of overeating and the weight gain that typically follows. Putting on pounds during the holidays is so common that many people are both expecting and accepting that it will happen to them, but this doesn’t need to be the case. It is very possible to experience a satisfying Thanksgiving dinner while watching your weight and that doesn’t mean a strict diet of salad and water. If you follow these simple tips, you’ll get to enjoy your holiday favorites this year without the guilt or the weight. The first tip is to simply make sure you eat a normal breakfast and lunch during the day. You might think skipping meals and saving your calories for the big dinner is a good idea, but more often than not it leads to you overeating and adding even more calories to your intake. While we’re on the subject of calories, let’s talk about your Thanksgiving day cooking. One great tip for a healthy Thanksgiving day is to try easing up on the

STYLETOME.COM

sugar and fat in your food. It doesn’t need to be hard-core recipe changes. Something as simple as using a fat-free chicken broth for your gravy is a great way to start. I promise no one will notice the difference in your cooking if you cut out a few calories here and there by using lower calorie substitutes. The next tip is a crucial one when it comes to watching your weight during this holiday season. Three words, friends...Watch. Your. Portions. There’s always going to be plenty of options at the table on Thanksgiving, but having it there doesn’t mean you have to take it all. A Thanksgiving meal is just that – a meal! A meal made up of many different items that you could eat all year long if you wanted to. Instead of filling up your plate with everything, choose to fill it with small portions of traditional holiday favorites and if you’re feeling full, don’t go back for seconds just because everyone else is. Leave the stuffed feeling for the turkey. Besides, if you ask me, leftovers are much better the next day anyways!

Finally, the most important tip I have for you is to simply remember the reason for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Don’t get wrapped up in your weight loss and dieting. Simply be aware of your eating habits and focus on not putting on more weight, as opposed to losing the weight you have. Please realize that Thanksgiving isn’t just about the buffet table. It’s also about family, friends and quality time. Take a healthy, bonding walk with your loved ones after dinner and let this New Year’s be the one where you don’t have to make that resolution to you-know-what.<

“Putting on pounds during the holidays is so common that many people are both expecting and accepting that it will happen to them, but this doesn’t need to be the case.”

Investing When Interest Rates Are Low Photo By Steven Miller

> More and more lately I’ve been approached by people seeking my advice who are concerned with how to invest in such a low interest rate market. I hear statements like, “CDs aren’t paying anything!” and “What happens when interest rates finally rise?” Well, in my opinion, people do have reason to be concerned. Interest rates have been exceptionally low for three years now and treasuries are flirting with all-time lows. Not only that, but the market has continued to be quite volatile which only punishes risk-averse investors even more.

rates are at historical lows, and the rate is locked in for a long time, when rates go up and better options are available for investors, this bond fund isn’t as attractive. Unfortunately, this isn’t like when you are out at a bar and someone doesn’t find you attractive. When that happens you smile, walk away, and find someone else to talk to. When bonds lose value it means real money losses - money losses that are ironically coming from the investments that people are flocking to in the masses to reduce risk and preserve their capital.

If you are retired or approaching retirement, capital preservation is important, but you also want your portfolio to outpace inflation in order for it to last throughout retirement. Even for investors with a longer time frame who want to be properly diversified, where do you find historically lower volatility investments, like bonds, that are offering palatable dividends? So how do you factor the prospect of continued low interest rates into your investment strategy?

No, I don’t have a crystal ball. Moreover, I don’t know when interest rates may rise. But, if it is logical to believe that bonds lose value when interest rates rise, and they are currently at historically lows, then what are you to do? There are other options, whether you focus on shorter-term bonds, preferred stocks, UITs, ETFs, or non-traded investments that are prepared for a rising interest rate market, it is important that you review your portfolio. Look through your investment holdings and meet with your advisor to discuss where you currently stand and what changes you may need to make. If you do not have someone to talk to or would like to seek out a second opinion, please do not hesitate to call or email me. I would be happy to review your accounts and discuss this and any other concerns or questions you may have.<

Bonds, and bond mutual funds, have seen more inflows of cash from investors in recent years than stocks even though interest rates and yields have not been offering much in return. There are a few glaring issues here. First, the yield available in a welldiversified, long-term bond fund on average isn’t even keeping up with today’s inflation rate. Secondly, if interest rates begin to rise, these bond funds may lose value. Consider what these bond funds own… BONDS! Bonds that are long-term, sometimes 30+ year agreements to pay a certain interest rate for borrowed money. Well, if interest

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

IRS TARGETS OFFSHORE CREDIT CARDS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ > The IRS and Department of Justice have expanded efforts to uncover offshore accounts by tracking credit card use. The IRS has named this new effort Offshore Credit Card Program (OCCP).

The IRS efforts include issuing John Doe summonses to obtain information from VISA, Master Card and American Express. In addition, the IRS has summoned information from Credomatic, a Florida credit card processor that services banks located in Caribbean tax-haven countries.

Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhoriwtzlaw.com

By issuing a John Doe summons to credit card companies and processors the IRS can discover the identity of individuals with offshore credit cards. After obtaining offshore credit card holders’ identities, the IRS will begin a civil examination and may commence a criminal investigation.

The “stick” is the threat of civil penalties and criminal prosecution upon discovery of unreported income and offshore accounts. The “carrot” is the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP) which results in significantly reduced civil penalties and eliminates criminal prosecution. Under OCCP the government will identify many offshore accounts. This program will result in many criminal prosecutions. Even though a John Doe summons has been issued, a person can enter the OVDP as long as the government has not yet received the information from the offshore banks, credit card companies or credit card processors.<

The OCCP is part of the IRS’s attempts to increase tax revenues. The government’s efforts are a carrot and stick approach. SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

> Frequently I am asked what is Cosmetic Dentistry? Cosmetic Dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental treatment that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, and/or bite. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty area of dentistry. Many dentists further their education by taking advanced courses with like minded dentists to be able to deliver a high level of dental skill and artistry. It is important when a patient seeks cosmetic dentistry that they seek references and be provided with comprehensive before and after photographs of patients treated by said dentist. The wonderful thing about dentistry and its specialties is that almost all treatments are to improve not only the oral health, but will also benefit the patient cosmetically by improvement in the face and smile and contribute to an enhanced self confidence. Each specialty has its particular expertise. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses on surgical correction and enhancement of the face and facial skeleton. Orthodontics goal is to straighten teeth and correct bites and also assists the general dentist is setting up teeth for cosmetic restorations. Periodontics assist cosmetics in various treatment modalities. One way is with exposed tooth roots. Recession can cause sensitivity, bone, loss, and cavities as well. A gum graft can protect the teeth from these problems . Also; gum plastic surgery can get rid of a gummy smile and set the table for a beautiful smile with periodontal health. So as you can see the dentist develops a team of experts to assist in providing the patient with the optimum cosmetic result.

DON‘T MISS THE BEAT

> Camus said, “A work of art is a confession.” A Liar’s Broken Heart, the first solo CD from Tony Battaglia (aka, The Relic), is a true work of art. A Miami native, Tony has spent his life in the music business. He wrote and produced #1 hits for Puddle of Mudd and Shinedown… and created the platinum-selling debut for Mandy Moore. He starred as the singing voice for Bart Simpson in the classic *NSYNC episode…and wrote the title songs for the original Hairspray movie and Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains It All. He recorded with Keith Richards and Bill Cosby…and played guitar alongside Joe Walsh and Spirit’s Jay Ferguson. Tony’s been driven since he picked up his first guitar. Now he’s finally found the voice to share the experiences that shaped his life.

A MASTER OF HIS OWN DISGUISE Tony came by music naturally. His father was a musician who played the guitar and there was always music around the house. But he also learned about pain and distrust at an early age. Tony was sexually abused by his grandfather and the priest at his church – dark secrets he never shared with his now-deceased parents. As a result, Tony became a “master of his own disguise,” as he says in the title song of A Liar’s Broken Heart, hiding his anger and suspicion behind biting sarcasm that pushed most people away. He spent hours a day holed up in his room, mastering the guitar; and, when he was ready, he took on the Miami music scene with a vengeance, showcasing his talents with local bands, blowing audiences and other musicians away. But he never really fit in. The same was true when his family moved to Central Florida: He could play and sing better than most, but his musical alliances were all short-lived. Connections soon led him back to Miami, where he worked with the Eagle’s producer, Bill Szymcyk, in Coconut Grove’s famed Bayshore Studios. He played with Joe Walsh and on Jay Ferguson’s Top Ten hit, Thunder Island. For a time, there was even talk of a solo album; but things went sideways and

Tony found yet another reason to distrust authority.

A DIFFERENT DIRECTION Undeterred, he decided it was time to take control – to take his talents elsewhere and use everything he’d learned about the industry to make music his way. So he packed up his equipment and moved to New York, New York, where he opened a small recording studio,The King of Queens (decades before the TV show). And he hustled. Before long, he was working with major artists like Keith Richards and Run-D.M.C. He made connections with major labels, television networks and movie producers. He moved to Manhattan and opened Studio 900 – still in operation. He produced a series of jazz recordings with Bill Cosby. He was successful, but he wasn’t satisfied. In the late nineties, he grew tired of long cold winters and returned to Florida. Work found him, and he continued to produce, engineer, and lend his vocal and instrumental talents to the constant barrage of projects that followed. Tony also found himself in uncharted waters – in love and expecting his first child. He “settled down,” bought a house and began raising a family, working out of a small home studio. Of course, when opportunity knocked, he traveled the country writing, playing, recording and producing. But his three children – Olivia, Ruby and Jake, now 18, 13 and 10 – became an unexpected priority in his life. He was determined to protect them – to keep them safe from the abuses he had suffered.

THE MUSIC NEVER STOPS While recording in a Central Florida studio in 2000, Tony was introduced to a gangly teenager from Bishop Moore High School named Mandy Moore. He and friend, Shaun Fisher, began working with her, crafting songs to fit the girl’s big voice. Tony tapped his contacts to help Mandy get a contract with Sony, and the result was So Real, a platinum-selling CD featuring the top-ten single, Candy.

In 2001, he became the only person to ever sing for Bart Simpson in the New Kids on the Blecch episode. Tony wrote all the songs – including Drop Da Bomb – and performed the singing voices for every boy in Bart’s band. Orlando’s *NSYNC also appears in the episode. In the years that followed, Tony produced albums for a number of hard rock/alternative bands. He wrote Save Me, the lead single off Shinedown’s second CD, Us & Them, which held the #1 position on the Active Rock Charts for 12 straight weeks. He also wrote Puddle of Mudd’s Psycho, the band’s second best-selling single ever in the U.S., which hit #1 on Billboard’s Rock Tracks. Through all the accolades and adulation, Tony still hadn’t expressed his own feelings in song. He communicated through the music of others, writing the words, playing the instruments and, often, telling his stories; but it wasn’t enough. As the music industry began to crash, so, too, did his home life.

“After a lifetime of hiding his secrets – and burying himself in the music industry – Tony finally turned his talents within, returning to his roots as a singer/songwriter/musician to produce his first solo album, A Liar’s Broken Heart.”

Love and loss. Pleasure and pain. Joy and anger. A Liar’s Broken Heart isn’t for the young and innocent. Tony paints pictures for people who’ve been tossed and turned by life…who understand beauty and sorrow. From the acoustic chords that kick off the title song to the haunting guitar solo in Someone Else, the CD’s climax, all 11 tracks on A Liar’s Broken Heart reverberate with raw emotion, revealing personal truths and reveling in shared experiences – a kind of adult angst that most will find familiar. On November 15th, Tony Battaglia (aka, The Relic) will share his music and bare his soul for all to see at The Abbey in downtown Orlando, with 10% of the proceeds going to the Downtown Arts District. Dawn Berlanga-Helms, Esq. PERSONAL INJURY TRIAL ATTORNEY Photo By: Steven Miller

> “Love at first sight?” Fade back 50 years, Dawn’s father was enlisted in the USAF. A brilliant, mechanical man, he instinctively knew how things worked together. One sunny day in Spain, he laid eyes on an amazing woman, unlike any he’d ever met. He knew only that she filled a long empty silhouette in his soul. Translation book in hand, for he spoke no Spanish and she no English, he embarked on a mission to capture his love. Together they produced four lawyers and one doctor. Dawn is married to Roger Helms, like her, a plaintiff’s personal injury lawyer around town for the last 30 years. He, like her father, was also a victim of love at first sight when he met Dawn, ironically enough by reaching out to discuss a legal issue. “She’s so much smarter than me,” Helms admits. “When we try cases together and a complicated question of law arises, I quietly take a seat, she stands, makes her case and and we seem to win.”

Dawn Berlanga-Helms, Esquire BERLANGA-HELMS, P.A. 1422 Hillcrest St. Orlando, FL 32803 P: 407-898-5400 F: 407-898-5444 www.BerlangaHelms.com

Dawn previously worked for insurance companies, having graduated with honors from Florida State College of Law in 1991, and was courted by some of the most prestigious firms. While still in law school she worked as an intern for the Florida House of Representatives’ Committee on Regulated Industries and as an extern for the State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit as a prosecutor. However, she found her calling in personal injury by helping folks against the big machine, government and insurance companies that

trampled the little guy. She opened her own office on Hillcrest, just one block from where her husband lived when he was born. As a lawyer and while running her practice, she lobbied on behalf on the Florida Justice Association for those in need. She served 2 terms on their Board of Directors, as well as for the Women’s Caucus for the FJA, and earning the coveted Silver Eagle Award for her work with the organization. She is an AV rated lawyer and has been featured in several publications as one of the top female lawyers in Central Florida. She is a Certified Circuit Court Mediator, and currently serves on the Florida Bar UPL Committee for the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Dawn’s compassion for the less fortunate gives her the most satisfaction. Dawn throws herself full force into helping her clients. She considers her clients friends and gives them her cell number. “I don’t like people being ignored, and I think I owe my clients the moral obligation to help them,” she says. “It is who I am.” Dawn has four children from a prior marriage, two at home, two at college. Between teenagers and a business relying solely on word of mouth, there’s seldom a boring moment. However, when they can, she and her husband slip away to the Bahamas where they keep a 52’ Hatteras to relax at the local spots. One such place is Sundowners on the sea of Abaco where Brian, the owner, serves up the island’s most tasty Goombay Smash and delivers the most stunning sunsets one can imagine. <

Maria DiBlasio Hale, Esq. ORLANDO CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY Photo By: Steven Miller

> Maria Hale grew up in Central Florida and has a deep love for her community and its people. After being nationally recognized for her skills as a trial attorney, Maria Hale groomed her talents while working for the Pinellas County State Attorney’s office. As a prosecutor, Maria learned many valuable courtroom lessons and gained hours of litigation experience. Those tools paved the way for Maria to enter the private sector and give back to those who desperately needed her services. As a private criminal defense attorney, she now has the unique opportunity to take what she has learned and “pay forward” the benefit to her clients. As a tough-minded, former prosecutor, Maria Hale now seeks justice for her clients by protecting their rights when charged with a criminal and/or traffic offense.

ria has taken on a quite unexpected role. In addition to managing the firm and practicing law, she spends many hours serving on the Florida Grievance Committee and the Florida Code and Evidence Committee.

“I am asked all the time, ‘How can you represent people who have been charged with a crime?’ And the answer is simple. Justice is not just for one side of the aisle; however, justice is for all people, even the accused.” Maria Hale believes that all people have the right to a fair trial and competent legal representation. She appreciates the fact that most people who hire an attorney are taking a leap of faith that the attorney can help them navigate through the complex legal system. “Having someone place their liberty in your hands is such an unbelievable responsibility and one that I do not take lightly.”

In an effort to impact future lawyers, Maria serves as an adjunct professor at Barry University School of Law, where she also serves as Trial Team Coach. In her spare time, she is an active member of the Central Florida Association of Women Lawyers (CFAWL).

At Hale, Hale & Jacobson, P.A., Maria partners with her husband, Richard Hale, and friend, Lee Jacobson. Each partner brings a different dynamic to the firm and all seek to provide the best legal representation to the firm’s clients. As managing partner, Ma-

In addition, Maria Hale has found other ways to give back to the Central Florida community. As an active member of the Spring of Life Methodist Church congregation, Maria spends countless hours offering legal counsel to the indigent and gives generously her time to those who are less fortunate. Moreover, Maria and her partners share the common goal of making their community better. Hale, Hale & Jacobson, P.A. regularly supports many charities including the Central Florida Children’s Home and Hailey’s Hopes and Hugs Foundation.

Maria Hale has been listed in “Orlando’s Top Lawyers for Highest Ethical Standards and Professional Ethics” by Orlando Home & Leisure and Martindale-Hubbell as a Peer Review Rated “Preeminent” Attorney. In 2011, network television hired Maria as a correspondent on various legal topics. She was regularly featured on FOX News, HLN and MSNBC, amongst others. April Rager FOR YOUR REAL ESTATE NEEDS

> Being from Southern Georgia and raised by a strong southern family has made me who I am today. I moved to Central Florida in 1984 and have been here ever since. I was brought up to treat others as I would like to be treated and two specific things that were embedded in me were “pretty is as pretty does” and “your education is one thing that no one can take away from you.” With that being said, I knew that it was up to me to better myself and become an independent, strong, woman inside and out! That has been very important to me as I raised a daughter after a divorce. It was my obligation to show her what “beauty AND brains” can do. By showing her that with hard work, determination and the right opportunities, you can be whoever you want to be!! But always strive to be the BEST! Real estate has given me more challenges, victories, headaches, and joy than I could have ever imagined! My family has been so supportive and surprised by what I have made of myself! I was a stay at home mom and wife for many years. That allowed me to be available, which was VERY important to me. Becoming a Realtor was more of a necessity, not a choice. However, being blessed with strong southern parents, we persevere. I was able to make a schedule that was conducive to being a single parent and provide

my daughter with many things that I would never have thought possible on my own. Having wonderful friends and clients that I have met while in this business has kept me working harder, learning all I can as the market changes and providing them with the best real estate experience I can. Life has way of throwing us all a curve ball, as it does, we have a choice. I chose to roll with the punches. To get back up and try, try again. Hearing my grandmother’s words in my ear always saying that my education is something NO ONE can ever take from me, has kept me striving for more knowledge. I have been in the industry for a while now, the market changes like the weather. It’s been my goal to keep up with the others that are making such a mark today. Being recognized as a Top Producer in this market, is a blessing. With that, I take every opportunity to learn, grow and experience more so that I can be the best at not only real estate, but a better example to all women. We need to be educated, strong and pretty inside! <

> Ever heard of a ‘dirt’ lawyer? Well, you’re looking at one. Despite the name, which implies getting your hands dirty, Karen Wonsetler is a real estate attorney, commonly referred to as a dirt lawyer because their job involves fighting for or protecting client’s land rights.

After being admitted to state and federal court in 1998, Karen Wonsetler began to carve out a niche as a real estate attorney in Central Florida. A proud graduate of the University of Florida College of Law, Karen has built a successful law firm anchored by her outstanding staff, managed by Alana Dietel [graduate of the University of Central Florida’s Masters of Business Administration], and associate attorneys Kimberly Soto [graduate of George Washington College of Law] and Anne Marie Rossi [graduate of Florida State College of Law]. Her secret weapon at the office is her husband of 10 years. Raymond Lam, an aerospace engineer turned small business owner, runs the firm, allowing her to do what lawyers do best, focus on clients. Ray is famous for answering after hour calls to the firm, whether it’s late at night or on the weekends, because the firm is dedicated to supporting its clients when emergencies arise. Karen and Ray’s son, Alex, now eight, grew up thinking the correct way to answer a telephone was with the greeting “Hello, Law Office, can I help you?” rather than simply saying “Hello.”

SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

In addition to her busy transactional and litigation practice representing national and private lenders, commercial and residential land owners, and more than 200 central Florida homeowner’s and condominium associations, Karen often accepts pro bono cases in matters where she feels there would otherwise be an injustice and miscarriage of justice. Karen frequently will discuss current trends and issues in the law with news reporters and she never fails to deliver a reasoned analysis along with a passionate advocacy for the rule of law. When not practicing law as a lawyer, Karen enjoys her yearly stints as a Special Magistrate conducting ad valorem taxation exemption and classification hearings in a number of Central Florida counties. As a Special Magistrate, Karen has the ability to act as a finder of fact and judge over legal matters involving homestead exemptions, military, scientific, literary, educational and religious exemptions, as well as agricultural classification disputes between property owners and the local property appraiser’s offices. The experience she has gathered from conducting thousands of these quasijudicial hearings since 2006 has strengthened her resolve to lay the groundwork to become a county court judge in the coming years.<

Executive Chef Louis Martorano

By Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com

HILTON ORLANDO > Orlando is known as the tourist capital of the world. Millions of families and couples, young kids and old timers, come from across the world to experience the World of Disney, the excitement of Universal Studios, and enjoy the abundance of restaurants and hotels. While there are an overwhelming amount of hotels to choose from, one that is standing a notch above most is the Hilton Orlando, situated on International Drive, minutes away from the parks, but miles away from ordinary. A contributing factor to what makes this hotel sit in its own category is the quality and excellence of the food. And we can thank Executive Chef Louis Martorano and his team for this.

Executive Chef Louis Martorano

David’s Club

Spencer’s for Streaks and Chops

STYLETOME.COM

Martorano excels in his role as executive chef. One might think Martorano spends most of his time in the kitchens, but as executive chef, his job description is way heftier. The beautiful and elegant Hilton Orlando houses 1,450 guestrooms and seven dining outlets including Spencer’s for Steaks and Chops and David’s Club, a classic American Gastro pub. Martorano manages his 68 cooks and six sous chefs, while also managing the finances and adhering to budget, the hiring of the entire culinary and stewarding teams both salary and hourly, establishing succession plans for all managers, and creating all menus, recipes and implementation. “It’s a tremendous operation,” said Martorano. But Martorano has certainly been groomed for this position and has worked his way up the pipeline at hotels across the country to land in his role at the Hilton Orlando. Brooklyn born Martorano grew up playing baseball, and had one goal…to become a professional ball player. While attending St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., he was offered a walk-on invite from the Cleveland Indians. But when baseball ended just a year later, he went to work for his family’s Italian restaurant in Little Italy.

Although working with his family in the restaurant was a great platform, he didn’t see much of a future there, and so he went to work as a banquet server in a wedding hall in Brooklyn. It would be this little parttime serving job that would change his life forever. While serving one night, New York’s Waldorf Astoria’s Food and Beverage Director, Tim Minetti was a guest and was so impressed with Martorano as his waiter that he invited him to come work for him at the WA. “When he asked me to come work for the WA, I told him I actually only served part time and that I was actually a cook,” said Martorano. “Minetti said ‘Really? You’re a hell of a server’ and I said ‘I think I’m a better cook!” So off he went to the WA with very little training and cooking experience and began work in the vegetable kitchen and every rotation there after. “It was my own $60,000 education and I got paid to do it,” referring to the fact that he never attended culinary school. “But it was like a crash course. I only had one time to do it right.” While working at the WA, Martorano headed to New York City Technical College to earn a hotel restaurant degree to learn the ins and outs of the management side, which would prove very beneficial in his future positions. Soon after, he moved on from the WA to work in the Marriott Marquis in New York and the Weston Hotels & Resorts in California, South Carolina, and Florida for six years. In 1995, Martorano headed to Nashville, Tennessee to open the “Delta” for the Gaylord Opryland. In August 1997, Martorano headed down to the sunshine state to work at the Boca Raton Resort & Club for almost 11 years, where he worked in multiple chef positions.

CHEF PROFILE ::

In 2008, he was asked to return to the Gaylord family and help open the Gaylord National in Washington, D.C.

THE SULTAN OF WINTER, SERVES 4 PEOPLE

And this experience is what led him to getting his dream job as Executive Chef and help open the Hilton Orlando in Florida in 2009. “I was a glutton for opening hotels for two straight years, but it was an unbelievable experience.” The job description was perfect, and the location of the hotel couldn’t be better, sitting on International Drive and just a half-mile away from the Orange Country Convention Center. The two are connected by a covered, open-air walkway making it convenient for business workers, vacationers, and locals coming to enjoy the tastes of the Hilton. Martorano’s passion for cooking and service is evident and his team philosophy is what sets him apart from the rest. As a self-proclaimed sports freak, Martorano wants his team to live, breath, cook, and serve as one. “I love to develop my team. I use their input because when it’s their ideas, it’s their heart and soul and if you don’t have that, you can tell in the food.” You won’t find Martorano micromanaging though. He’s not a fan of this style. Instead, he encourages involvement and feels that “if you don’t feel like you did something, you’re not going to give 100 percent.” And it’s clear this style is working. In its first three years of opening, the Hilton Orlando was the recipient of the Hilton Worldwide “Connie Award” in 2010 and 2011, which awards for top service amongst all Hiltons across the world. They were also ranked number one on Trip Advisor’s rankings of Orlando hotels and the hotel has received a AAA Four Diamond rating for its luxurious amenities and top-notch service. This die-hard Yankees fan believes that “if you don’t win, it’s a loss. You have to be better than you were yesterday, and if you weren’t good yesterday, how can you be better today.” Martorano has found a comfortable spot here at the Hilton Orlando and believes he still has a lot of goals with this young hotel. It’s safe to say he will be here for a while, which only means that the already incredible food and service will continue to raise the bar. “Guiding this hotel has been the best job of my life. The pinnacle of my career.” So where can we see Martorano in 15 years? Well if he’s not traveling to Major League Baseball parks all across the country as his son’s agent, then you’ll find him running a big hotel and having fun. COCKTAIL HOUR

Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> So when you get up in the morning and feel that crisp chill in the air, see how the leaves on the trees are changing their color or the heater in the house is finally being cranked up, you know one thing is certain. Fall is here and you don’t live in Central Florida!! But it does mean, for me anyway, the best season is finally here. Tis the season for pairing wine and food and that always brings a smile to my face. Those certain fall flavors we only taste this time of year are screaming to be paired with a great bottle of wine and I am here to help you pick and choose the right one for this time of year. For me the holidays during the fall point to red wine as a showcase for those big family meals around the table. Just ask your Thanksgiving turkey and he will tell you he prefers to be hooked up with a silky Pinot Noir or a spicy, sexy Syrah. There is a place for white wines as well but I think this is the time for those “other” red wines to shine. Wines such as Pinot Noir and Syrah, as well as a couple of others like Grenache and Beaujolais, really like and need the spotlight this time of year. Now you can find certain varietals of these wines in more than one corner of the world. I am not here to tell you where your bottle should be from or how much it should cost. The important thing is you enjoy it with whatever meal you have in front of you. Pinot Noir has quickly become and stayed as one of my favorite wines to drink this time of year. New World Pinot Noir is a versatile red wine that can cozy up to all types of dishes from turkey and duck to your smoked meats or fish. New World Pinot’s typically have a nice explosion of

STYLETOME.COM

fruit up front and finish with an elegance found rarely in most other varietals. The Old World Pinot’s, such as Burgundy, usually take on a more earthy characteristic. Roasted meats are a must to pair with Old World Pinot Noir. Pumpkin or butternut squash that has been kissed with nutmeg and cinnamon are happy to sit next to Pinot’s from the old world. Thanksgiving is an obvious time to have one or four bottles of Pinot Noir sitting on that table throughout the feast. Mix it up and try different Pinot’s from different parts of the world and you will soon be hooked like me. Syrah, or Shiraz if you prefer, is also a showstopper for any fall feast or holiday shindig. While Syrah is usually found on labels from Europe and the United States, Shiraz comes to us from “down under,” as well as South Africa. I find Shiraz from Australia can really pack a peppery punch but still have an abundance of soft fruit. Both will have that nice kick of spicy fruit and even hints of chocolate showing up on your palate. These wines pair up nicely with smoked meats or wild game if that’s your pleasure over the holidays. Look for names such as Cote du Rhone or Cote du Rotie if you really want that old world style to pair rustic meats or vegetables with. One of my favorite pairings is a nice bottle of Cote du Rotie with bacon inspired dishes or bacon dipped in dark chocolate. Syrah to me is one of those mysterious mistresses that should always be at the party but you are not sure how much trouble she is going to cause. A couple of other fun wines to have during this season are not as well received for some reason. Grenache is a little more accepted as being a great wine while Beau-

jolais is like the kid who is picked last for the baseball game. I hope we can change that perception, as Beaujolais should be the big surprise for anybody who opens a bottle for Thanksgiving dinner. Grenache is usually found as a varietal in several types of blends, most notably Chateauneuf du Pape or G.S.M’s (look it up.) The Australians have done a great job with this varietal as a standalone wine. Grenache is a good option for those vegetarians out there who still put out the big spread over the holidays. Beaujolais Nouveau is one of those wines people usually have seen as cheap and around at every giant grocery store chain for years. I am telling you grab a bottle for Thanksgiving and you will not be disappointed. The annual release of this varietal is a big event in France, happening on the third Thursday of November, every year. It is a wine that is very young and therefore is a very fruit forward wine. My favorite pairing is that turkey sandwich you make the day after Thanksgiving with some leftover cranberry sauce. It is always at the right price and can dance playfully around all those other big, serious wines it sits next to on the table. Regardless if you like the big huge holiday banquet with roasted meats and wild game or you choose the light vegetarian path, you can always find a wine to pair with your choice. It is just this time of year with all the changes outside, mostly, and the foods we usually only get to see and taste once or twice a year, these wines shine brighter than most. So this fall season reach for one of these “other” red wines and be pleasantly surprised. Beaujolais will be grateful to you and so will I.<

Still on probation, Madea is not a star candidate for employment, no way, no how but she has to fulfill her community service obligations. In Tyler Perry’s “Madea Gets a Job”, Madea’s unconventional job highlights an inevitable situation we must face – getting old. You will find that nursing homes can put a strain on family relationships and the hardships some families encounter after making that most important decision for our loved ones. Madea, lady of wit and wisdom brings out the best of a situation (and there are a lot of situations in this production.) She will always tell you the truth whether you like it or not. Successful beyond their wildest dreams, the iconic comedy duo Cheech & Chong defined an era with their hilariously irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holds-barred comedy routines. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong’s phenomenal success began on the stand up comedy circuit which led to 9 hit comedy albums and 8 hit films, breaking box office records, shattering comedy album sales, garnering multiple Grammy nominations and mesmerizing fans for more than a decade. With nine albums released from 1972 through 1985, Cheech and Chong were nominated for four Grammy Awards, winning the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album with their third album, Los Cochinos, released in 1973. Big Bambu, their second album, was the biggest selling comedy record of all time in 1972 and remained so for many years. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

SNIFFING OUT HORSE SENSE IN BUSINESS LAWYERS - BY STEVEN D. KRAMER > Many people hire the wrong attorney to represent their small business. As an attorney, representing small business requires an understanding of a range of legal issues including contract law, intellectual property, corporate law, employment law and a range of legal disciplines that merge together at small business.

Because of the tendency towards over specialization in law, few attorneys have an understanding of these multiple disciplines and how they overlap. Instead business owners wind up seeing multiple attorneys, but lack a cohesive strategy, lose time and money in the back and forth, and lose competitive advantage in lost communication between multiple attorneys or worse, multiple law firms.

999 Douglas Avenue, Suite, 3333 Altamonte Springs, FL 32714 P: 407-834-4847 / 877-493-4847 skramer@mykramerlawfirm.com www.mykramerlawfirm.com

For example, some firms have attorneys that focus specifically in business transactions, which center on contracts and closings, and have separate attorneys or departments that deal with litigation of contracts or transactions. If an attorney does not litigate contracts or transactions and see the effects of unintended consequences or poor contract draft-

ing, how can that attorney properly represent a business in transactions or in drafting contracts? Representing small business properly requires more than understanding multiple areas of law, it also requires understanding how business works. Many attorneys have never worked in business outside of being a lawyer. They have never run a business; they do not have common business sense- or horse sense. Be sure that your attorney has worked in businesses outside of law. Ask them about their experience as an entrepreneur. Ask them about their depth of understanding in business law, contract law, employment law, corporate law, and intellectual property. Most importantly be sure that your attorney has the same horse sense as anyone running a business. < Steven D. Kramer advises and represents numerous small businesses and major corporations. In addition to his law degree, Mr. Kramer earned a Certificate in Intellectual Property from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and a Certificate in Small Business Leadership from Harvard Business School.
