PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Doctor, Doctor… The last thing we men think about is to see a doctor. We think we will live forever and there is nothing that can interfere. Many of us find out too late and pass way to soon. With an annual check-up, and with preventive test[s] at the first sign of irregularity in our body, can change the course of a deadly outcome. If not for our wives making us a doctor’s appointment for us to go see the doctor, these numbers would be even higher. Good medical care can improve your daily life tremendously and my advice to you: “See a doctor frequently even if you think everything is fine”. If you don’t already have a great medical service team, here is what we got for you. Life is precious. We need to slow down and “smell the roses” as the saying goes, and to embrace every moment as a gift from God. CITY NEWS

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT By Riesa Pascal

How are we already more than halfway through 2019? Year after year, I never cease to be amazed when the time comes for us to publish our July/August Summer Double Issue which goes to show that the old adage “time flies when you’re having fun” is more than true when you live in the City Beautiful. In fact, let’s take a look at some of our favorite events from June, just in case you missed it! June was Bite 30 month and foodies across the city were quick to start the celebrations! Bite30 is Orlando’s 30-Day Restaurant Week featuring the best local restaurants and chefs driving Orlando’s culinary scene. Participating restaurants offered special prix fixe menus with multi-course dinners at a set price of $30 per person. Diners delighted in the opportunity to try multiple dishes on the restaurant’s menu for the cost of a single entree, and restaurants get to showcase their specialty dishes to the new customers attracted by the Bite30 menu! Movies at Leu Gardens is a beloved tradition and June 7th provided yet another opportunity for the city of Orlando to experience a fun movie outdoors in one of the area’s most beautiful gardens! Leu Gardens latest movie night featured A Quiet Place projected onto a 32 ft screen for movie goers of all ages. Guests brought dinner picnics, blankets and chairs to enjoy the film and the outdoors with friends and loved ones. Grilled items, popcorn and drinks were also available for purchase. Some attendees even took advantage of the scenic location by strolling through the 50‐acre gardens before the film. Movies at Leu Gardens begins again in August and continues each month until December.

Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards kicked off the summer of fun with their annual Summer Grape Stomp celebration! Held in Clermont from June 8th-9th, the family-friendly event offered arts, crafts, entertainment, free tours and plenty of purple grape stomping for all. Attendees enjoyed two days of live music both on an outdoor stage and inside at the popular Wine & Cheese bar. Lakeridge wine, beer, soft drinks and a variety of food were also available for purchase, along with complimentary Winery tours and tasting. A portion of the proceeds went to support the LovExtension, a nonprofit dedicated to helping the elderly and disabled communities in Lake County and The Villages. From June 21st-22nd, more than 18,000 fans enjoyed thrilling and pulse-pounding competition, as mascots from MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA and the Arena Football League battled through gladiator-themed games, to see who were the true champions of the mascot world. The annual Mascot Games event features approximately 30 mascots from sports teams across the country competing in a variety of games. Since the Mascot Games’ inception, proceeds have been benefitting New Hope for Kids, which provides support to children and families grieving the death of a loved one and grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses in Central Florida. On June 22nd, House of Blues Orlando played home to the ultimate craft beer and music event! Craft beer enthusiast thrilled their senses with the perfect pairings of taste and sound at Local Brews Local Grooves. The annual event brought beer and music lovers by showcasing 18 different breweries from across the state

of Florida. In addition to sampling from the breadth of breweries, guests could also chat with brewers and hear from experts on what goes into the perfect brew. In addition, attendees also had the opportunity to shop specialty apparel celebrating craft beer at the Hop Cloth table. The biggest Rum & Reggae Festival in town returned to Wall St Plaza & Heritage Square Park on June 22nd for a party like no other! RumFest 15 gave attendees the opportunity to enjoy 3hrs of unlimited sampling of over 20 different kinds of Rum drinks at the biggest Rum Party of the year. The celebrations were complemented by live Reggae-Rock music from local favorite bands and DJ RED I. Guests who upgraded to the Red Stripe Terrace ticket received admission into RumFest 15 as well as access to the air-conditioned Monkey Bar which featured complimentary Red Stripe beer, additional select Rum drinks and Caribbean style light snacks PechaKucha Night returned to the Dr. Phillips Center on June 29th with a special benefit for The Art of Medicine Foundation! PechaKucha Night is an entertainment event held several times a year in downtown Orlando. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for “chitchat,” PechaKucha rests on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes the presentations concise and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. Speakers present their PechaKuchas on any subject, from the personal to the public. The diverse group of presenters had the opportunity to share their work while audience members listened, learned, engaged and unwrapped the hidden brilliance of Orlando!

Tavistock Development Company is redefining Lake Nona by being the face of their latest and largest projects. An innovative community, Lake Nona is always looking for the next big investment. Whether that be a food hall made of repurposed shipping containers or an inflatable water park featuring climbing towers and cable systems, Lake Nona specializes in unique and fulfilling experiences for all ages. Beyond that, they strive for inclusivity and sustainability in both transportation and entertainment. Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas, opening slated for 2020, calls for a grandiose movie-going experience. With recliner seating and a full dinner menu and bar, the theater will span 40,000 square feet and feature nine screens. Traditional menu items such as Nathan’s hot dogs and Icee drinks will allow attendees to feel nostalgic, but lavish starters and cocktails add a level of refinement. Furthermore, Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas allows guests the option to rent the space in order to host corporate events, parties and presentations. Events such as these will include a gourmet menu and stylized rooms. The cinema is part of the second phase of Tavistock Development Company ever-expanding Lake Nona Town Center and will include a bowling alley. The Pixon Apartments, opened earlier this year, are an 11-story empire with a rideshare program featuring Tesla’s Model 3s. The housing options include studios, one and two bedroom homes, as well as three bedroom penthouses. 26

The one bedroom studio micro-apartments are the first of their kind in Orlando. This complex is modernizing hospitality through the latest technology, including computer stations and virtual gaming lounge, and their sleek architecture, including large custom closets, high windows and stainless steel inclusions. XL Soccer World is opening the second 50,000 square-foot soccer complex in Orlando within months. The first has both turf and grass fields made with weather withstanding materials. The outdoor section includes both 9v9 and 6v6 fields while the indoor section has 6v6 fields. Presumably, the new addition will have a similar foundation. Leagues of all ages are welcome to participate in either fun or competition in the stadium-lit arenas. To cool down, a soccer themed pub is included in the design that will air sports events. The Tavistock Lake Nona Resort, with one of the largest man-made lagoons spanning at 15-acres and lined with sand beaches, is set to open in 2022 to improve the mind, body and spirit. This eight-story resort will have a destination spa as well as a fitness facility and expansive volleyball venue. By way of 250 rooms and 80 condos, there is simultaneously comfort and closeness. What differentiates this resort from the average hotel is how its rooms are designed to accommodate those who are recovering from exertion and its events are tailored towards education. For example, the mattresses are specially made, and there will be

blackout curtains. With 20,000 square feet of meeting space, classes are offered so guests leave with more knowledge than they entered with. The Tavistock Town Center Hotel is set to open in 2020. This hotel will join sophistication and leisure in a loving marriage. With health and technology at the forefront of Lake Nona’s infrastructure, guests will be provided with a number of experiences by way of the partnership the Tavistock shares with Technogym. With 231 guestrooms which include 17 suites, the space will include wellness and sleeping features similar to those featured in the Lake Nona Resort. This hotel will act as the center of the Town Hall Center and will be represented accordingly. Lake Nona will introduce the first autonomous vehicles to Central Florida. The vehicles will hold up to 15 people with a steady speed of 16mph. Beep, a Lake Nona company, will operate the AUTONOM shuttles by NAVYA as part of the Move Nona transportation strategy. Move Nona will create a network with multiple ways of travel. The AUTONOM shuttles will gladly join their place alongside Tesla rideshare programs and EV charging stations. With traffic becoming an epidemic, this is a step towards alleviating roadside tension. Lake Nona is creating new forms of shopping. From sports to hotels, they make sure you can’t get the same level of extravagance anywhere else.

GRILL CHILL B Y

Summer typically calls

for hotdogs, sunscreen and football. But really, it means whatever allows you to unwind. And the best way to achieve unmatched relaxation is by having a good old-fashioned grill out. Grills are the last thing you’d expect to be advanced, but the capabilities on these machines will add so much more to how you define a party. Gone are the days of needing multiple electronic systems in order to entertain guests. With the rise of technology comes the idea of including multiple services in one device. The worst part about being the grill master is missing out on some of the fun. Sure, they’re the provider for the group, but with their back’s turned and focused on the food, they have the potential of missing an important play or moment amongst friends. This is no

longer an issue with the TV Entertainment Package or the Stereo inclusion. Having these devices embedded in the grill provides more convenient ways of serving and entertaining. Partygoers can gather ‘round and watch while the grill master performs their tasks. Or, while there is a larger screen set up elsewhere, guests can line up to get their snacks and not miss out on the action. The Stereo inclusion has the same effect while eliminating the need for an invasive and bulky speaker. Rather, the music or film can blast from the center of the party and serve as the perfect background noise for a memorable night. Furthermore, accessories rid the need for someone to run back and forth to the kitchen to grab forgotten supplies. Refrigerators, sinks and drawers are convenient and allow the host to relax. More

extravagant additions include a full bar. With LED lighting to give a hint of exclusivity to a traditionally ordinary activity, a bar will allow for a more intimate experience. Traditionally, someone will have a cooler of beer tossed in the corner somewhere, but with a full bar at your disposal comes experimentation and greater appreciation for simple comforts. Beaches are synonymous to paradise; the perfect getaway, and the only weather fit to fully immerse yourself in a cold drink. Luckily, Florida is in the vicinity of some beautiful coasts. Yet, given the range of towns, the distance can be a bit cumbersome. By having a tiki bar on your grill, you are bringing paradise to your front door. With a television, speaker, bar, sink, refrigerator and seating, you will have guests believing that “It’s

A LY S S A

A S A R O

5-o’clock Somewhere” was inspired by your backyard. This all-inclusive package is a party in and of itself. The grill master simply just has to show up and let the appliance work its magic. Summer is supposed to be easy. The feeling you get shutting off your alarm clock is the same level of satisfaction and triumph that should last the whole season. That sensation comes from having effortless fun. Having a traditional grill out is already a leisurely activity. Yet, built-in rigs that take even more of the effort off the host’s shoulders and allows for a unique and exciting experience for the company you keep is a no-brainer.

SHAWN MENDES the tour by Courtney Caggiano 58

| STYLETOME.COM

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

Shawn Mendes, the charming Canadian singer-songwriter that has won the hearts of millions, is returning to Florida with his self-titled run of shows featuring special guest Alessia Cara. Shawn Mendes: The Tour comes to Tampa on July 27 and continues in Orlando on July 30.

The album’s lead single, “In My Blood,” echoes the inner strength that the singer has developed over the past few years of greeting a music career in the modern age with courage and grace. In the song, Mendes openly declares, “Sometimes I feel like giving up, but I just can’t / it isn’t in my blood.”

Mendes has ventured a long way from his early years of learning to play guitar by watching YouTube videos and then posting soon-to-go-viral cover songs on the online platform. After captivating viewers with his charismatic style and a voice that reaches well beyond his years, Mendes released his first single, “Life of the Party,” in 2014, becoming the youngest artist to debut in the top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

But anxiety is nothing new for Mendes, yet it has become a growing hardship that the musician has now needed to conquer in the spotlight. Since the release of this groundbreaking album, Mendes has opened up about his difficult struggles with anxiety disorder. He has stated that he very much grapples with the fear of how he is perceived in the media. Mendes has also shared that he finds much needed respite by meditating and journaling his honest feelings—which have become one of Mendes’ favorite ways to fashion ideas for songs. While admitting his fears and facing them head-on through his music certainly wasn’t easy, Mendes has discovered how much his truthful words have resonated with people all over the world.

At the age of twenty, Mendes is hitting the road with the same fire that helped ignite a critically-acclaimed international career on the heels of his third studio album, 2018’s Shawn Mendes. This latest album showcases a new sense of refined maturity as Mendes has had to learn to overcome recent challenges that a young star often faces on a quick climb to fame. With a more refined sensibility to his musicality and newfound lyrical depth that only comes through experience, Shawn Mendes shows an artist that is both more vulnerable and braver than ever. This album stands as a testament to the incredible growth and stability Mendes has championed as his skyrocketing appeal has changed more than just the size of his live audiences. With 44.7 million Instagram followers and surpassing 1 billion global streams on Apple Music, Mendes has become the pop sensation of the digital generation, as countless fans follow his every move on the internet’s ever-growing stage.

This album stands as a testament to the incredible growth and stability Mendes has championed as his skyrocketing appeal has changed more than just the size of his live audiences.

Along with his more empowering songs, Shawn Mendes is known for filling his live shows with an excess of excitement, spirit, and passion that show off Mendes’ incandescent happiness to be doing what he loves to do most. With unforgettable tracks like “Lost in Japan” from his third album and earlier favorites such as “Stitches,” “Treat You Better,” “Mercy,” and “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back,” Shawn Mendes: The Tour is the musical event of the year that fans will not want to miss.

CELEBRITY SOUP

AMERICA’S RICHEST

SELF-MADE WOMEN UNDER

40

Forbes has released their newly updated list of America’s richest self-made women under 40, and we’ve read through the entire article for this month’s Celebrity Soup! From singers and athletes to investors and entrepreneurs, you will be amazed to learn just how much cash some of these wealthy ladies are swimming in. Here are six celebs we hand selected from the list in order to take a deeper look into how they managed to acquire such an extreme abundance of wealth and fame.

TAYLOR SWIFT, 29

Net Worth: $360 million Taylor Swift was barely an adult when she scored her first No. 1 album at the tender age of 18. Released in 2008, Fearless launched Swift’s career which has since seen over a decade of best-selling albums and worldwide tours that now allows her to boast a net worth of $360 million. Swift first made Forbes’ list in 2016 with a fortune of $250 million and at just 26 years old, she was the youngest member by far and one of only four women under 40. However, her claim to fame as the youngest member on the list has since been dethroned by cosmetics queen, Kylie Jenner.

KYLIE JENNER, 21

Net Worth: $1 billion It’s pretty safe to say that Kylie Jenner is having a great 2019! In March, the youngest member of the Kardashian klan also became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire...ever! Her three-year-old beauty brand, Kylie Cosmetics, is worth at least $900 million by Forbes’ estimate and Kylie retains 100% ownership of the mega-successful company. The makeup mogul is America’s only female self-made billionaire under the age of 40, but with her family’s fame there are some who naturally question Forbes’ decision to call her self-made. By Forbes’ own definition, the term self-made describes anyone who did not inherit his or her fortune, so nepotism and family fame aside—Kylie Jenner remains on the list!

RIHANNA, 31

Net Worth: $600 million New to Forbes’ list is business woman, makeup guru and the newly crowned richest female musician in the world—Rihanna! Despite boasting the title as richest female musician, you may be surprised to know that the majority of Rhianna’s fortune actually comes from her cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty, and her partnership with LVMH which helped her make history as the first black woman to run a major fashion house in Paris. Together, these business ventures have netted Rhianna an estimated $570 million dollars alone with the rest of her assets bringing her total up to a whopping $600 million. Given the fact that she just launched a Fenty Fashion line, I think we can safely say that we’ll see her back on the list next year!

CELEBRITY SOUP

EXPLORING FORBES’ LIST OF THE NATION’S WEALTHIEST LADIES B Y

R I E S A

P A S C A L

BEYONCÉ KNOWLES-CARTER, 37 Net Worth: $400 million

Though she first rose to face as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child, her fame and fortune has since skyrocketed to historic heights and much like Rihanna, she also shows no signs of slowing down! Of course we’re talking about the one and only Queen Bey herself, Beyoncé Knowles who currently sits on a net worth of $400 million. In just the past year alone, the superstar became the first black woman to headline Coachella and now boasts the most-streamed Coachella video on YouTube ever. In April 2019, the pop star milked a little more cash out of her performance by releasing Homecoming, a live album and Netflix special about the show. That same month, Beyoncé also announced a new partnership with Adidas to relaunch her activewear line Ivy Park and if you’re tired of hearing her name, then you better stay away from the cinema’s this summer because she also voices Nala in Disney’s highly anticipated remake of The Lion King. Is there anything she doesn’t do?

SERENA WILLIAMS, 37

Net Worth: $225 million 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams is a newcomer to the list and actually made history as the first athlete to make Forbes’ list of richest self-made women under 40. With an estimated fortune of $225 million, Williams is much more than just a champion tennis player though. From fashion to venture capital, she has built her massive fortune through a diverse variety of business avenues that you may be surprised to learn about! Over the past five years alone she has invested in 34 startups through Serena Ventures which targets companies founded by women and minorities. In addition to owning stakes in the Miami Dolphins and mixed martial arts promoter UFC, Williams also owns S by Serena, a self-funded and direct-to-consumer clothing line which officially launched in 2018.

KIM KARDASHIAN WEST, 38 Net Worth: $360 million

With some of the most-followed social media pages in the world, Kim Kardashian West is a name that needs no introduction. Her estimated net worth is a not-too-shabby $360 million and much of that fortune is thanks to the success of her two year-old cosmetics company KKW Beauty—which raked in over $100 million in revenue in 2018 alone. Combined with endorsement deals, mobile games, emojis and Keeping Up with the Kardashians earnings, we fully expect to see this social media queen continue to climb the list. These days Kim is following in the footsteps of her famous father and apprenticing to be a lawyer. Though she is forgoing law school, she is passionate about criminal justice reform and plans to take the bar in 2022.

INTERMITTENT

FASTING B Y

If you’re wondering why your

diet isn’t working like you thought it would, maybe you should look into your pattern of eating. Intermittent fasting, the oldest dietary regulation, is recently the world’s most popular health trend. People are seeing outstanding results in weight loss, health improvement, and simplifying their lifestyle. WHAT IS IT? Intermittent fasting is a controlled schedule of consuming meals so you attain the maximum health benefits from your intake. It doesn’t control which foods you eat, but rather when you should eat them. Ultimately, an eating pattern. With various methods, common intermittent fasting cycles contain 16-hour fasts or 24-hour fasts, two times per week. WHY? Diets’ harsh change on your body can take a toll on your energy level. It can be draining when you force such a strict food restriction. A regulated eating pattern containing all of the nutrients your body loves is easier on your body. It’s a great method to get lean while maintaining your muscle mass, without cutting your calories and nutrients. Cutting your calories and carbohydrates is not the goal

of intermittent fasting. In fact, you want to try to keep your calorie intake the same by eating bigger meals. The behavior change isn’t a huge change in lifestyle, as diets are. Simplicity helps reduce worrying about cooking or purchasing three meals a day, or eating six snacks a day. This can consume your thoughts and make your mind concentrate on food, which isn’t healthy. Intermittent fasting is something so simple, yet can create immense results. METHODS • The 16/8: Also known as the Leangains protocol, you skip breakfast then restrict your daily eating period to 8 hours. Then, you fast for 16 hours in between. This is the most popular method. • Eat-Stop-Eat: You fast for 24 hours once or twice a week. • The 5:2 diet: For two nonconsecutive days of the week, you consumer 500-600 calories, then continue to eat normally the other five days. HOW DOES IT WORK? When your body is digesting and absorbing food, it is in the fed state. This digestion state lasts for three to five hours after consumption. While in the fed state, it’s difficult

M E G A N

M I L L E R

for your body to burn fat due to high insulin levels. After, your body enters the post-absorptive state, which is when your body isn’t processing food. This lasts 8 to 12 hours after your last consumption, starting the fasted state. The fasted state is the time when it’s easier for your body to burn fat. Your Human Growth Hormone (HGH) levels raise while fasting, which has benefits of fat loss and muscle gain. Fasting forces your body to a fat burning state that you can’t achieve on a normal eating schedule. Going on an eating pattern is not something everyone needs to do. Overall, getting nutrients, exercising, and getting plentiful sleep should be your focus. Everyone’s body works differently, and you have to find out what works best for you. As intermittent fasting is a recent trend, research is still in its early stage. However, many studies have been conducted, and it’s looking very positive when followed safely. The benefits already seen in intermittent fasting include everything leading to a better, healthy lifestyle. If you haven’t found a successful method of attaining this, intermittent fasting may be the answer! Always consult with your physician before starting an new diet.

ORLANDO’S DOCTORS OF THE YEAR

ORLANDO’S

+DOCTORS

OF THE YEAR

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Doctors of the Year’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

and is an Assistant Professor at UCF. The countless hours Dr. Gutierrez has spent training and teaching local Medical Students, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Medical Assistants, have helped shape his legacy of passion and professionalism in the Central Florida medical community. Dr. Gutierrez is the founder and CEO of Mid Florida Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, & Allergy. Since founding his medical practice in the late 80’s, Dr. Gutierrez has grown the business into one of the largest single-owner medical corporations in the country, with over 30 offices that span Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana. This expansive footprint has allowed Dr. Gutierrez to provide skin care for a wide swath of patients in the SouthEast. Not only is MFDPA one of the largest plastic surgery groups in the United States, but it has also been recognized as a Candela Center of Excellence for Laser Therapy, an acknowledgement given for providing a state of the art laser training facility for

practitioners. Beyond these achievements, Dr. Gutierrez’ dedication to fostering healthy patients with healthy skin inspired him to develop a non-carcinogenic, reef-friendly mineral sunblock called Naked Turtle Sunscreen. With offices all along Florida’s beautiful beaches, he recognized the need for a sunscreen that was both reef safe and people safe. He is blessed with five children and lives in downtown Orlando with his wife, Lindsey, and their two sons. Although the journey is far from over, he is humbled to have played a part in creating a healthier Orlando, and honored to be recognized by Orlando Style Magazine and it’s readers.

Orlando Dermatologist Dr. Michael Steppie Associates In Dermatology Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, Associates in Dermatology proudly continues to deliver an unrivaled level of care to patients across numerous Central Florida communities. An Heartfelt Mission to Deliver Stellar Clinical and Cosmetic Care

His president and medical director, Dr. Michael Steppie, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon, is one of the few elite members of the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Amonette Circle and his expert opinions have been quoted in numerous publications including Men’s Health Magazine.

as well as higher level of exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Unfortunately, it also might explain why

Florida has a higher rate of skin cancer among its residents than any other state!

Dr. Steppie, wants to remind us that anyone can be at risk for developing skin cancer. Those with darker skin tones often believe they are at a lesser risk for cancer, nonetheless, it is far from the truth… For instance, studies show that over the last twenty years, the incidence rate of melanoma among Hispanics has risen nearly 20%.

His role as an ardent supporter of the Central Florida community goes far beyond the routine practice of dermatology. “I feel my most important

as much as possible when the sun’s rays are the strongest, between 10am and 4pm! Says Dr. Steppie, then he continues, using the famous axiom from Benjamin Franklin: “one ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”!

As a continuing sponsor of the Daily UV Index featured on Fox 35 for the eighth consecutive year, Associates in Dermatology has become Central Florida’s most trusted source for quality information about sun exposure. Michael Steppie, MD continues by saying: The latest skin cancer foundation statistics show that 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. However, our year-round sunny climate means local residents spend more time than normal enjoying the outdoors

Dr. Steppie was actually a “pioneer” when he envisioned the recent “green” sunscreen movement, as you probably know, Hawaii has banned the use of sunscreens using chemical sun filters and soon will the Florida Keys. His sunscreen formulas, which are part of Dr. Steppie’s state-of-theart skincare regimen -Ethereal Beauty-, only use physical sunscreens that are environmentally safe but are also enriched with antioxidants and emollients for optimal protection.

The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery Inspiring Confidence. Changing Lives.

One of the most trusted plastic surgery practices in the area, all three surgeons from The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery (IAS) are elite in their own right, earning recognition as Orlando Style’s 2019 top plastic surgeons in the Orlando area. Offering services at three Orlando area locations, IAS has built a reputation for integrity, great bed-side manner and, of course, superior results. Founded by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Richard Gregory, they recognize that cosmetic surgery isn’t just about vanity, it’s about reclaiming one’s selfconfidence. While surgery may correct something external, the biggest transformation is internal. Dr. Gregory acknowledges that it takes courage for a patient to discuss their physical insecurities. That’s why building strong patient relationships is so important. Building that relationship starts the moment the patient enters the practice for a complimentary consultation. Consultations emphasize education. As a practice, they want patients to know their options and understand what is – and isn’t – possible to achieve through surgery. According to Dr. Roxanne Sylora, “Every patient has unique needs, and there are many little choices you can make during a procedure that can influence the outcome. The more experience you have and the more tools you have at your disposal, the closer you’re going to get to where the patient wants to be.” As a full-service plastic surgery practice, IAS offers a comprehensive menu of services ranging from surgical and non-surgical body contouring to laser skin treatments, hair restoration, and injectables.

Often, procedures may be used in conjunction to achieve optimal results. While many practices may rely on sole physician, IAS is built upon the skill of its three outstanding board-certified plastic surgeons. Founder, Dr. Richard Gregory, is internationally known for his unparalleled surgical technique. While skilled in all areas of plastic surgery, his passion is in facial rejuvenation using surgical and non-surgical options to achieve the desired result. Year after year, he is recognized both locally and nationally as one of America’s Best Doctors. Joining the practice in 2012, Dr. Roxanne Sylora is known for her expertise in breast enhancement, reduction and body contouring. Before moving to Orlando, she spent several years in the Chicago area performing breast augmentation and body sculpting, including tummy tucks, breast reconstruction and post-massive weight loss body contouring. Dr. Donovan Rosas is a boardcertified and fellowship trained plastic surgeon. He provides a wealth of experience earned at the nation’s premier institutions of higher learning including Princeton, Brown and Harvard University. Dr. Rosas specializes in breast and body contouring, breast reconstruction, and hair restoration. As a practice rooted in Christian values, the physicians of IAS are passionate about their mission. “Our mission is to inspire confidence and help people reach their God-given potential,” says Dr. Sylora. “When you see people’s personalities bloom and their confidence grow after a cosmetic procedure, it’s a great feeling.”

Dr. Philip T. Hardy MD, MT (ASCP) | Legacy Family Medicine It is more than a coincidence that Dr. Hardy was born in Orange County, California and now lives in Orange County, Florida. The circuitous route that brought him here from the West Coast to the East Coast involves his immigrant father and mother from England and Canada respectively, his early teenage years in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, High School in Santa Rosa and Escondido, California, College in Walla Walla, Washington, teaching conversational English in Seoul, South Korea, graduating in Medical Technology at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland Oregon, and receiving his commission as an Officer in the United States Air Force in Loma Linda California while attending medical school in his birth city at Loma Linda University Medical School. Slightly more than coincidence... Legacy Family Medicine was founded in 2010 in honor of his grandparents, Jim and Doris Hardy who held the record in the United Kingdom as the oldest, longest married couple at 78 years of marital harmony. Jim passed from this world at 103 years of age after gently closing his eyes to answer a question posed by his lifetime bride, with his son, Philip O. Hardy, DDS sitting beside him. Doris passed several years later after reaching 99 years of age. The name Legacy can mean “a person delegated” as legatus from medieval latin, but more specifically, Legacy Family Medicine is founded on a Tradition of Longevity, a tradition of long life and service. This is the fundamental goal of LegacyFM.com, not only to live longer, but to achieve a lasting existence of service to self through achieving the delicate balance of health and with that attainment, to be of service to others. Capitalizing on his experience while on active duty in Guam, as Assistant Chief of Family and Urgent Care Medicine at the Andersen Air Force Base Medical Facility in Yigo, Chief of the Emergency Room at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, and furthering

his studies at the Family Medicine Residency at AdventHealth (formerly Florida Hospital), Dr. Hardy uses his training gained as an intern in Internal Medicine, “Oak Leaf Cluster” medal awarded Military Medicine experience, and his Board Certified training in Family Medicine to Legacy Family Medicine. “Traditional Family Medicine with a Technological Advantage” is a mantra you might hear him say, and frankly, it is true. A robust technological infrastructure rooted in an Electronic Health Record that is linked to Quest, Lab Corp, AdventHealth, Simon Med, and Professional Imaging Consultants and affiliated with Orlando Health. This EHR offers a patient portal that allows for secure review of testing results with HIPPA compliant messaging between patient, providers and specialists which provides a coordination of care that is considered to be the “State of the Art.” Utilizing a Collaborative Model that enlists the patients energies and background to achieve overall wellness through education, holistic therapeutic interventions (Sports Medicine Injections including Supartz and Traumeel, Accupunture, and Florida State Medical Cannabis Certifications), office based ultrasound studies, and traditional Allopathic modalities with focused clinical testing, Dr. Hardy is able to offer a traditional model of family medicine based on holistic care that builds on a synergistic approach between patients and their health practitioner. Dr. Hardy invites you to visit his modern 4,000 square foot appointed facility conveniently located in the East Orlando Waterford Lakes area between Rouse and Alafaya on Lake Underhill Road adjacent to the 408 Tollway. He would be honored to introduce his bilingual staff, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioner, and Acupuncturist. Welcome to Legacy Family Medicine, a Legacy of Longevity!

OF THE YEAR

Gerald R Mattia D.C. has been practicing chiropractic for 43 years. Even before that his life has not been ordinary. At the age of fifteen he had been given 6 months to live. “I was born with a severe heart condition called aortic stenosis.” People suffering from this condition have an aortic valve in their heart that gradually degenerates and therefore the heart cannot function properly. Heart surgery in the sixties was not as successful as today. He also had bad allergies. His mother was not ready to give up. On a friend’s recommendation, she took her son to a chiropractor. “The aortic valve stopped closing by 92 percent and my allergies were gone.” Dr. Mattia said. He was able to live to the age of 35 when he received his first new aortic valve and the success rate of heart surgery was higher. Dr. Mattia became a chiropractor because of this. He earned his chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College and opened a practice in 1977. Dr. Mattia practiced in New Jersey from 1977 to 2001. During that time he received many awards: Chiropractor of the Year 1996 and Sports Chiropractor of the Year several times. He was appointed to the Board of Chiropractic Examiners, on which he served for six years, by the governor of New Jersey. He was also a board of director for the International Chiropractic Association and the Northeast Regional Director. Dr. Mattia has been the president of International Chiropractic Association Sports Health and Fitness Council from 1996-2011 during which he joined Arnold Schwarzenegger every year in Columbus, Ohio for the ICA Fitness Symposium. The Symposium is held in conjuncture with the Schwarzenegger Fitness Weekend. In his quest to provide clients with the best preventative and therapeutic chiropractic care available, Dr. Mattia studies research, treatments and technologies from around the world. Consequently his office houses some of the most unique, cutting edge technology available: decompression therapy machines which help with disc problems in the low back and neck eliminating the need for surgery, the LPG key

module for endermotherapy, class 4 laser to promote healing , and Spine Force which offers non static exercise for patients and helps rehabilitate and develop muscle strength for the core and intrinsic muscle of the spine. It was developed in France and Dr. Mattia helped introduce it in the United States. These technologies have come to complement the fundamental chiropractic adjustment.

Mattia Spinal Care & Rehab Center, P.A. Gerald R. Mattia D.C., Director

In 2001 Dr Mattia retired from his NJ practice and moved to Florida to begin semi-retirement. But the quiet time did not last too long. Outside of the office, Dr. Mattia does power walking and likes to travel and loves golf and baseball. All during his career Dr. Mattia has taken care of many athletes from middle school to professional as well as regular clientele. His love for sports has helped him understand spinal care athletes require for better performance and nervous system function. Dr. Mattia practices with his wife, Paulette Mattia D.C., and Guillermo Nazario D.C. Dr. Mattia has helped many chiropractic college graduates begin their careers by having them work with him and gain experience. Dr. Mattia has begun Viscogen non surgical knee and joint relief center with Daniel Arnold MD. Regenerative therapy improves quality of life. Dr. Mattia has coached Babe Ruth Baseball, sponsored Team Gamez Foundation Chipping for Children, Central Florida YMCA, Orlando Union Rescue Mission and Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. Dr. Mattia’s love for his practice and clients is apparent in his contagious enthusiasm and liveliness. “The best part of my practice is the fact that people come to our practice and get better naturally, without medication. Touching thousands of lives over the years with the benefits of chiropractic is a professional achievement. Living to the age of 68 when I was supposed to die at fifteen is a personal achievement. A great cardiac surgeon, Kevin Accola M.D., and chiropractic care and prayers saved my life.”

OF THE YEAR

Dr. Ryan L. Mendro, DDS, MS Precision Periodontics and Dental Implants

Dr. Ryan L. Mendro has dedicated his career to help Central Florida residents restore happier, healthier smiles. Dr. Mendro is a board-certified Periodontist who has been uniquely trained in treating periodontal (gum) disease and the placement of dental implants. He believes dentistry and periodontics are the perfect combination of art and science, which gives him the opportunity to not only treat disease, but to help improve his patients’ health as well as their smiles! Dr. Ryan Mendro earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Florida, his Doctor of Dental Surgery at Columbia University, and his Master of Science and Certificate in Periodontics also at the University of Florida. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is an active member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, and Florida Association of Periodontists. Dr. Mendro is a published author and remains active in the dental community and serves as a member in several professional organizations. Rest assured, you can expect quality, expert care and the most advanced state of the art treatment options. At Precision Periodontics and Dental Implants, Dr. Mendro and his wife, Dr. Lucia Roca Mendro who is also a Periodontist, are committed to providing the latest technology. The practice offers procedures such as LANAP, a specialized laser treatment for gum disease. Additionally, both doctors provide the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), a revolutionary alternative to conventional gum grafting for the treatment of receding gums. Both procedures are minimally invasive and do not require the use of scalpels or stitches. Additionally, Dr. Ryan L. Mendro and Dr. Lucia Roca Mendro use 3D x-rays, 3D intra oral scanning and 3D printed implant guides. This technology can allow for the removal of hopeless teeth with the simultaneous placement of dental implants (tooth root replacements). An artificial full set of teeth can be made and attached to the dental implants, which provides an instant and permanent hold that eliminates the risk of looseness or slipping associated with traditional dentures. Sometimes this entire procedure can be performed in just a single day! These implant-supported teeth are designed to look, feel and function just like regular teeth. Treating your gum disease, receding gums and replacing your missing teeth has never been easier! In his spare time, Dr. Mendro enjoys cooking, working out, outdoor activities and spending time with his wife, Dr. Lucia Roca Mendro, with their son Matteo and French bulldog, Maurice.

Dr. Wendi Wardlaw

Stoneybrook Dental / Inspired Purpose One Woman’s Mission As a believer who understands that any good that comes from me is by the power of God, I have watched His grace, vision, and direction make growth my reality. From the US Army, through Howard Dental School, Postdoctoral at Columbia pursuing my passion (access to care in underserved communities), to private practice (Stoneybrook Dental) for 10+ years while serving as a missionary through Inspired Purpose, whose mission is to show God’s love through medical missions locally/internationally. I also serve as an Executive Director of the John Maxwell Team growing, teaching and helping others nationally/internationally. Stoneybrook Dental, an award-winning practice, focuses holistically on the needs of our patient families. We all have to be conscious of the systemic connections between the mouth and the rest of the body. About 95% of people with diabetes also have periodontal disease (PD - the loss in tooth structure that supports teeth). People with PD have more difficulty controlling blood sugar. In the USA, 1 in 4 people have diabetes. 1 in 3 are prediabetic. That is over 29M people. PD is directly linked to arterial inflammation (heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and other biomarkers). This is why PD treatment reduces medical costs over $5k/year for stroke patients and over $1k/ year in heart disease patients - to say nothing for the savings in disease prevention. In the worlds of diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, and heart attacks, there is a 95% chance your teeth could be play an integral role. Go to your dentist. Maintain your oral health. Your mouth is the main access to your body and intimately relates to your capacity for overall health. “A Healthy Mouth IS a Healthy YOU”. Care in Care God’s plan has taken me many places I did not fathom for myself. 31+ years in dentistry, I could not imagine this when I was an assistant or hygienist. As a dentist of 17+ years, I serve as teacher/mentor to aspiring leaders in the medical/dental/ allied sciences. Stagnation is debilitating while action builds momentum & momentum empowers. Principles of lateral thinking, organization, and servant leadership teach students to be tenacious and creative as they “Move Forward” (which titles my section of “Woman Who Impact” the international bestseller I co-authored) and GROW. Final Word Be inspired. Know your best and healthiest you. Receive all the growth God has in line specifically for you.
