editor’s note

that Leon moped around the entire time we were gone but temporarily shed his sadness as he slept with his front paws atop our ‘baby sitter’s’ bed each evening. Thereafter, Leon stuck to me like ‘Velcro’, 24/7, for the remainder of his lifetime…thus, our fond referral to him as mentioned above. Without going into all the specific details, Leon became ill several months ago. We took him to three different vets along with a multitude of specialists and his basically undiagnosed condition only worsened despite receiving prescribed medications for nausea, varying antibiotics, Prednisone to alleviate inflammation, etc.…it goes on and on. As his physical condition continued to deteriorate, we knew that our Leon was in great pain despite his courage and resolve never to display any outward discomfort, for he knew that telegraphing his pain would only cause us much additional distress.

There Are Angels Among Us

We never imagined we would ever find ourselves in a position of eulogizing the death of a pet, but with the loss of ours, we have come to realize that our depth of love and sadness is shared by thousands of others experiencing an event such as this; it is truly heart wrenching.

Leon had a good day today. We went to his favorite ‘doggy’ park and played hide and seek with his ball. Although he could no longer run like the wind, he loved to sniff and search for his ball tirelessly and never backed down from a challenge. He always wanted to show off for me, as he knew I was so proud of him. Our sweet Leon… we love him so much…our hearts are broken. We helped him into the car and we, ‘his pack,’ drove around the familiar neighborhoods so he could sniff the fresh air and feel the breeze gently blowing on his face, ears flopping in the wind. In that moment, he did not feel any pain, he was so content and happy hanging out with his family. We then fed him his favorite food, followed by a thin dental bone for dessert, washed down by lots of water and shortly thereafter, Leon meticulously selected a choice spot and graciously left his ‘last mark’ in this world. When we arrived home, I lay with him and rested for an hour or so, caressing him to sleep.

Nicknamed “Sad Sack of Velcro”, Leon De Marco was a lively member of our family for almost twelve years and we three were almost inseparable during this time, save for a date some nine or ten years ago, when Sven and I decided to take a short weekend holiday and asked a trusted and dear friend, Lou Milano who also loved Leon, to favor us by taking care of our puppy for a few days. Upon our return, Lou informed us

Dr. Jones has been Leon’s vet since our arrival in Orlando, about six years ago. Leon loved visiting the doctor’s office, knowing he would get a great bath, some delicious cookies and very gentle treatment. The doctor gave him a tranquilizer to make him sleep lightly but Leon couldn’t relax so another two shots were administered and he finally sat down on the floor. We sat with him and told him how much we

loved him and that he was such a good boy; we cuddled, kissed and caressed our baby who trusted us implicitly; I rubbed his soft tummy as he breathed and loved watching it rise and fall with each breath inhaled and exhaled. When he closed his eyes and began to snore, we felt comfort in knowing he felt safe in our presence. We gave Leon our last kisses and asked him to save a place for us in Heaven, where only the worthy are privileged to enter; we know that God is now taking care of our sweet Angel. As we left the room, Dr. Jones assured us Leon would feel no more pain and that the final shot would require less than ten seconds sending our beloved Leon into his new and eternal rebirth where disease and illness do not exist and can no longer threaten him. He thanked us for putting aside our needs and putting our sweet Leon first. We left our final and personal written message to Leon, along with his favorite ball and squeaky toy, with Dr. Jones to accompany the cremation ceremony. We also chose to leave his collar and tag around his neck as we know that after wearing a necklace, a wedding ring, or a watch for any length of time, once removed it feels a bit naked, almost like something is missing; I never want Leon to feel even minutely less than being totally complete. Once we receive his remains, Leon will go wherever we go and he will always be nearby, within the walls of our home and our hearts. Today, ours is a pain that neither Sven nor myself could ever fathom feeling even though we knew our big, strong guy was already following us home and was happy and running with the power of a great stallion as he did before, showing off and saying: “look at me mommy…I can run like the wind!” He gave us almost 12 wonderful years of unrequited love and loyal friendship; since he was a puppy, he gave us his all every day of his life and we learned much from our sweet Leon. He taught us to love deeply, to persevere and to be forgiving. We love you so much my sweet Leon and wish you bright sunshine for the eternal life you now enjoy. Your happiness and love touched everyone you met and each learned to love you in return. You are now safely in God’s hands with His son and all His Angels. Despite this, we cry continuous and seemingly never-ending tears of sadness. <

TOP

Luxury Real Estate of the Stars By:Varinia Pereira Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Extravagance is synonymous with celebrity, so it’s only logical to assume that the top celebrities would have the most luxurious homes in the world. Many have one main mansion and numerous other villas and cottages for their world travel and sanctuary. If you had the wealth to choose one of these top 10 prime luxury homes, which would you choose? It’s a hard decision considering the overabundance of rich amenities, like private tennis courts, indoor swimming pools, built-in movie theaters and even a garage to park a jet!

Hampton Hideaway Seinfeld bought his East Hampton mansion from Billy Joel ... for $32 million. Being set next to the most pristine waterways and beautifully maintained luxury of the Hampton’s is just a plus for this Spanish-style manor. Did we mention the 22-car garage and baseball diamond? It comes with everything a man could need, including two solariums and horses named Prickly Pete and Snoopy. This home, built in the 1700s, has topped many lists of celebrity homes, beating out even Donald Trump, which is why it tops our list of the most luxurious.

Travolta’s Tower John Travolta built his dream house at the end of a private runway in Ocala, Florida, which includes parking for his Boeing 707 and Gulfstream jets. Oh, and a 16-car garage. Thank you for flying Travolta airlines! The 1.4-mile landing strip ends at the main entrance and the top of the house is shaped like an air traffic control tower.

Playboy Property Hugh Hefner purchased the famous Playboy Mansion for a mere $1.2 million in 1971. Now it’s worth over $50 million. Probably one of the most famous homes in the world, it includes a private zoo and aviary, a game room, a waterfall and the famous grotto as seen in various Playboy photo shoots.

Brad’s Belle Set aside the Brangelina cliff side castle in Malibu, the vacation home on Long Island, the $18K custom-made home for the kid’s gerbils and numerous other real estate, and the one that stands out the most is the fairytale home Brad and Angelina purchased in the beautiful South of France for only $60-70 million. The 1,000 acre estate features 35 bedrooms, a vineyard, a moat, it’s own banquet hall, and don’t forget the stream that runs through hidden tunnels to the moat and then into their own lake.

styletome.com

Prince Play Land This Calabasas castle, fit for a fresh prince, and worth nearly $20 million, was renovated and turned into a dream house by Will Smith and Jada-Pinkett Smith. It has its own lake for the kids to play in, full-size basketball and tennis courts as well as a sand volleyball court, horse facilities, batting cages and a gym. These kids will never be bored.

Tony’s Toys Tony Hawk works, breathes and even lives skating. He became frustrated after being harassed at public parks and built a 4,000 square foot skate park in his own back yard. It comes complete with a center pyramid, railing and a ledge. But the luxury doesn’t stop there; inside you’ll find more than $150,000 worth of gaming electronics. All play, no work in Tony Hawk’s case. Pizza Palace George Clooney’s main residence may be in the United States, but the one he really loves is a ‘little’ villa in Italy.Villa Oleandra overlooks Italy’s famed Lake Como and boasts 15 bedrooms. Clooney says in an ABC interview that he refuses to sleep in the master bedroom because it’s too big. One of the bathrooms in this Italian getaway is bigger than the average American apartment. It is also said to have it’s own outdoor theater. But we think he made the purchase because it comes with a separate kitchen just for Pizza!

Queen’s Castle It’s only fitting that the queen of daytime TV would have a home built for a queen. Oprah Winfrey’s House cost an estimated $51 million. Referred to as “The Promised Land,” this 23,000 square foot abode has 6 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and 10 fireplaces, a guesthouse, a barn, an orchard, a manmade lake and one of the most magnificent views on the Pacific coast. But in case Oprah needs a break, she also owns homes in Hawaii, Milwaukee and Chicago.

Green Goddess Julia Roberts and hottie-hubby Danny Moder recently completed a ‘green’ makeover totaling $20 million dollars. Included in their Malibu home makeover, rooftop solar panels that generate enough energy to take their home off the grid, recycled floor tiles and wood from sustainably managed forests. At about 6,000 square feet, the six-bedroom, five-bath house is actually pretty modest for such a giant star. But this home is enough to make other eco-stars like Leonardo DiCaprio green with envy.

Sophisticated Swift Taylor Swift is getting creative with a redesign of her Nashville apartment. This new star is turning a regular loft into a fairyland any girl would enjoy. This starlet has a 3,062 square-foot penthouse at the luxurious 18-story Adelicia apartment building in Nashville. Swift isn’t doing the typical remodel, she plans on putting a moat-like pond around her living room fireplace, with koi fish in the moat, according to a Yahoo music report. She also plans to put in a spiral staircase with a telescope and humansized birdcage at the top looking out at her night-sky painted ceiling. <

My proudest moment was when we opened Emeril’s. It all started with that restaurant, in what was back then a pretty undesirable neighborhood in New Orleans.

> OSTYLE You are known for your Louisiana-style cooking; what inspired you to open a restaurant like Tchoup Chop in Orlando? By the way, we love the openkitchen.

OSTYLE We see that you’ve just opened a

new restaurant in Pennsylvania. You’ve got another new book of recipes. You’re appearing on radio and television. And Orlando Style just saw you at Tchoup Chop in Orlando. What keeps you going?

EMERIL I’ve always loved the foods of the

islands and Asia – whether it’s Polynesian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Hawaiian or Thai. When we opened Emeril’s back in 1990, we described the menu as “New New Orleans” cuisine because it married some unexpected global flavors with traditional Louisiana Creole cooking – bold seasonings, lots of fresh seafood, beautiful fish, shrimp and pork. At Tchoup Chop we have the same culinary philosophy but give things a more Polynesian and Asian twist. When we saw the plans for the Loews Royal Pacific Resort and how it brought a little bit of the islands to Orlando, we knew it was the perfect place for Tchoup Chop.

Chef Emeril Lagasse Kicking Back With Orlando Style

Most of our restaurants have an open kitchen and a chef’s food bar, but the wok action at Tchoup Chop definitely kicks things up!

OSTYLE Tchoup Chop and Emeril’s are

great additions to Orlando’s restaurant scene. What’s your relationship with these restaurants like on a day-to-day basis? EMERIL I’m not able to be there all the time

because of my schedule, but I’m fortunate to have a very talented team to oversee things; many of them have been working with me for many years. Bernard Carmouche the culinary director for our three Florida restaurants has been with me since the very beginning and we are in constant contact. Chef Greg [Richie] and Chef Jason [Glus] have an amazing appreciation for the craft and their unique styles of cooking…as well as a strong foundation in our company’s style of hospitality when it comes to food and service.

EMERIL It takes a lot of planning to pack

in everything that we do each day, from the TV projects and cookbooks to developing menus and new ideas for our restaurants. I love being busy, but I really couldn’t accomplish everything we set out to do without the help of my amazing team…both in the restaurants and at Homebase back in New Orleans. OSTYLE Looking back. Did you ever think

that you would be the iconic chef that you are today? EMERIL I got in to cooking when I was a

kid because I loved it. My proudest moment was when we opened Emeril’s. It all started with that restaurant, in what was back then a pretty undesirable neighborhood in New Orleans – it will be twenty years ago this March. We didn’t have any particular plans in mind beyond that. Luckily we’ve been able to grow, and start new projects, open new restaurants as a way to help our team build their own careers. The shows and cookbooks were all just an extension of my restaurant life. It’s amazing how much people have embraced cooking since then. It’s pretty incredible. OSTYLE Can you tell our Orlando Style

readers about any projects that you will be working on in 2010? We’ve read that you’re working on a new tv show that will be on a primetime network. Can you tell us more about it? EMERIL 2010 is going to be an exciting year

Eli e Doctors > In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR”. With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite’, the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study,

dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our first ‘Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise and extremely well recognized within our community. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available in the Orlando area.< Doctors are listed in Alphabetical Order

> Every patient has a unique story to tell. While many come in before (before a wedding, job interview, graduation or beach vacation) and others after (after losing 40 pounds, having three kids, a divorce or car accident), every patient is given ample time during a consultation to relay their story and their reasons for seeking a plastic surgical transformation. One anonymous patient writes, “After having three children, my breasts had lost significant volume and my belly skin was loose.” For this patient, Dr. Charles Newman, Jr., combined a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast lift and breast augmentation to address her concerns and needs. Yet another patient stated, “After living in Florida all of my life, I appeared tired and older than I felt.” For this patient, Dr. Newman performed an endoscopic brow lift, upper and lower blepharoplasty (eye lid surgery), facelift, and fat grafting to the cheeks. Dr. Newman is trained in all facets of plastic surgery. His philosophy is to combine established plastic surgical principles with modern advances. “Plastic surgery is much more sophisticated today than in years past,” says Dr. Newman. “There are more options and higher expectations. I fully understand the need to minimize recovery time, yet still deliver the highest quality results.” His passion is to achieve enhanced but natural results. “There are several areas such as the eyelids or nose where subtlety is the key. In other areas, such as the breast and abdomen, dramatic changes can be achieved through surgical intervention.” Dr. Newman is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He believes it is imperative to choose your surgeon with the proper credentials and training to achieve the best results. Dr. Newman performs all of his surgeries in an accredited out-patient surgical center or hospital, frequently with overnight stays and nursing supervision. “Multiple procedures can be safely and effectively performed in one setting,” says Dr. Newman. “It is often beneficial in keeping costs down and obtaining the proper balance in the result.”

The translation of expectations and concerns into a treatment plan begins with a consultation. This time is never rushed and begins with a conversation where a patient’s goals are expressed. There is great attention paid to the reason a person seeks plastic surgery and how they perceive it will change their lives. Dr. Newman believes it is important to develop a personalized rejuvenation plan for each patient in order to reach their aesthetic potential. Whether considering the face, breasts or body, it is his understanding how these areas complement each other aesthetically that sets him apart. Dr. Newman also recognizes that many patients do not have the time or resources for surgical intervention. Newman Plastic Surgery offers a wide array of spa services, skin care lines, and volume-restoring fillers to enhance one’s appearance and reduce the signs of aging. Restoration, rejuvenation, enhancement, and refinement are all achievable goals. Let Newman Plastic Surgery help get you there.<

Compassionate Care > Upon arriving in Central Florida 22 years ago, Dr. George Pope quickly built a reputation as one of the area’s most skilled, artistic and compassionate plastic surgeons, and rapidly became the preferred choice of the area’s most discriminating patients. BOARD CERTIFICATION American Board of Plastic Surgery American Board of Otolaryngology MEDICAL DEGREE Louisiana State University School of Medicine Internship Tulane University Medical Center Residency The University of Connecticut The University of Louisville Affiliations American Society of Plastic Surgeons American College of Surgeons American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery University of Central Florida School of Medicine Florida State University School of Medicine Procedures Performed Cosmetic Breast Surgery Facelift Eyelift Rhinoplasty Liposuction Abdominoplasty Gynecomastia Cutera® Laser Treatments (skin resurfacing and tightening, hair removal, vein therapy) Injectables (Botox®, Dysport®, Sculptra®, Restylane®, Radiesse®, Juvederm®, Perlane®) Professional Skin Treatment & Products (SkinMedica®, Obagi®, Image®) Location 3872 Oakwater Circle at S. Orange Avenue Orlando, FL 32806 407-857-6261

In fact, Dr. Pope is very often chosen by other physicians to provide care for themselves and their families, and Orlando Magazine readers recently voted him Central Florida’s Best Plastic Surgeon. Patients have traveled from Europe, Bali and Saudi Arabia to be operated on by him, and he has a large following of patients from his native Louisiana. “Plastic surgery is constantly evolving, with new procedures and products becoming available continually, but the one thing that never changes is the importance of listening to the patient, understanding his or her goals and then translating them into reality,” Dr. Pope said. “I have built my practice around the needs of the patient, and chosen my staff for their abilities to put the patient first. We know the decision to explore cosmetic surgery is a big one, and we go out of our way to make everyone feel welcome, comfortable, understood and safe throughout the process.” Dr. Pope and his staff at Orlando Plastic Surgery Center offer a full range of procedures, including professional skin care with Giuliana Crider, a licensed medical aesthetician; injectables and Cutera® laser treatments by physician assistant Katie Benson; and cosmetic surgery by Dr. Pope.

“Looking your best throughout life requires a multidisciplinary approach,” Dr. Pope said. “For example, if a patient wants a youngerlooking face, we can improve the results of surgery by using skin treatments and medical-grade skin products, laser resurfacing and injectables.”

It’s private, safe, easily accessible, and the personalized care given there is unparalleled. Anesthesia is provided by the board certified anesthesiologists of JLR Medical, Inc., the doctors who provide anesthesia at Florida Hospital, and our nursing staff is attentive and capable.” Procedures performed at OASIS include cosmetic breast surgery, facelifts and eyelifts, liposuction, tummy tucks, gynecosmastia and rhinoplasty. Also board certified in ear, nose and throat surgery, Dr. Pope is considered one of the region’s experts on reshaping the nose. “Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult cosmetic procedures, and it takes years of experience to be able to get great cosmetic results without causing any medical problems,” Dr. Pope said. “You want the nose to be the right shape and size for the rest of the face. You’d never want it to be obvious you’d had a rhinoplasty.” To make his services more accessible to patients north of Orlando, Dr. Pope and his staff recently opened a satellite location on Winter Park’s Park Avenue. “We’ll be providing new cosmetic consultations and post-op visits two days a week in Winter Park. We’re excited to be a part of that community.” <

Dr. George H. Pope “The most affordable way to look more youthful and refreshed is to take care of your skin, and daily use of sunscreen is non-negotiable. Aside from breast enhancement, Dr. Soto also specializes in all aspects of facial rejuvenation and body contouring, including procedures such as brow lifts, face/neck lifts, chin augmentation, laser resurfacing, butt augmentation, abdominoplasty, and liposuction. Dr. Soto demands of himself perfection, and he prepares meticulously for each patient’s unique circumstances. Says Soto, “Regardless of the procedure, I try to anticipate every detail ahead of each surgery so that I can deliver the highest quality of care. No one leaves the operating room until I am confident that I have delivered the best result possible.” Surgical procedures are predominantly scheduled on Wednesdays and Thursdays so that patients have the best opportunity for a peaceful and steadfast recuperation. Dr. Soto’s philosophy that self-image plays a paramount role in our personal well-being carries over to all aspects of the practice. In addition to the surgical procedures, there are also nonsurgical treatments available, including intensive facials, lipo massage, injectables and laser treatments. These procedures, and many more, are performed by on-staff aestheticians in a state-of-the-art studio, complete with advanced temperature and sound control for maximized comfort and relaxation. Regardless of the procedure, each patient is treated with the utmost care and respect. The event came to the finish line with a traditional drive along the most scenic highways of Central Florida. As always this event had a great turnout for a great cause.

The “culinary Olympics” which benefited the Bocuse d’Or Foundation helps select the chefs who will represent the USA in the next international Bocuse d’Or competition in Lyon, France in 2011. > Following the devastation from the January earthquake in Haiti, Americans responded with unprecedented generosity, providing much needed donations and services. Also, our government pledged a $100 million aid package and continues to provide an enormous amount of logistical support.

Orlando Now Dealing with the Immigration Consequences of Haiti’s Earthquake By: Mark NeJame Contributor: Shahzad Ahmed Read more at: StyleToMe.com

In addition to the above humanitarian aid, our government has taken various measures to deal with the immigration consequences of the earthquake. For the most part, politics have taken a back seat on this humanitarian issue. Given the catastrophic nature of this earthquake, Republicans and Democrats alike have supported all of the following measures. One area of deep concern has been the impediment of children’s adoption from Haiti. The process of adopting Haitian children was already slow to begin with. But the process has slowed even more due to the earthquake. Many adoption documents have been lost. As a result, many U.S. adoptive parents who began the adoption process prior to the earthquake have encountered even further delays. In order to expedite the unification of Haitian children with their U.S. adoptive parents, The U.S. State Department and the Department of Human Services (DHS) are working with Haitian authorities to expedite the process of children’s adoption into U.S. homes. Also, various members of Congress are intervening to assist in this unification process.

Mark NeJame

styletome.com

Besides assisting Haitian children abroad, our government is providing relief to those already here. DHS reacted quickly by halting the deportation of illegal Haitian immigrants. According to DHS Secretary, Janet Napolitano, there are between 100,000 and 200,000 Haitians in the United States

illegally. Many of them have deportation orders, which have been halted by DHS as a humanitarian gesture. Also, our government offered Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to illegal Haitian immigrants. Given the humanitarian disaster in Haiti, this program grants an 18-month status ending in July 2011.

One area of deep concern has been the impediment of children’s adoption from Haiti.

Our government typically grants TPS when there has been an earthquake, flood, drought, epidemic, or other environmental disaster resulting in a substantial, but temporary, disruption of living conditions in the area affected. TPS has previously been granted for various countries, such as Sudan, Somalia, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. Although Haiti has previously suffered from repeated natural disasters, the magnitude of the recent earthquake has finally prompted our government to issue this TPS program. However, TPS does not extend to all Haitians. Those Haitians who entered the U.S. after the January 12, 2010 date of the earthquake are not eligible. Department of Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano discouraged Haitians from entering the U.S. following the earthquake by saying that it is “tempting for people suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake to seek refuge elsewhere,” however “attempting to leave Haiti now will only bring more hardship to the Haitian people and nation.” In addition, various types of criminal aliens are barred from receiving TPS. Despite our own economic challenges, America’s response to the earthquake in Haiti has been overwhelming. We realize that our difficulties pale in comparison to those whose lives have been so devastated. We all must contribute and help when we can and as we are able.<

If Looks Could Kill... Introducing the all new 2011 Audi A8 Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Fascinating sportiness, innovative technology and superior comfort: Audi is bringing the next generation of the A8 to the starting line. The new flagship demonstrates the brand’s proverbial Vorsprung durch Technik with its light aluminum body, its powerful and highly efficient engines, the further improved MMI operating system, new driver assistance systems, the full LED headlights and an elegant interior with a craftsman’s level of workmanship. With all this technology the new Audi A8 offers the perfect synthesis of dynamics, perfection in design, workmanship and pioneering efficiency. The A8 3.0 TDI with front-wheel drive, to follow at a later time, emits only 159 grams of CO2 per kilometer (255.89 g/mile) – and with 6.0 liters of fuel per 100 km (39.20 US mpg) it achieves the lowest consumption rate in the luxury segment. “The new Audi A8 is the sportiest sedan in its segment,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “It combines numerous functions in a new and intelligent way. And it’s unmatched in the stylistic elements and impression of the interior.” The new luxury sedan, to arrive at dealerships in early 2010, is a technical work of art. Its elegant and forceful body is an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF), weighing about 40 percent less than a comparable steel structure. The interior is captivating, with its new and spacious design and uncompromisingly high-quality workmanship full of attention to the smallest detail. The comfort on board is first class – from new, emotionally charged ambient lighting to the luxurious, power adjustable seats in the rear. The Audi A8 combines a new level of intelligence with exemplary and easy operation. Its multimedia interface (MMI) includes a pioneering innovation: Combined with the optional navigation system it has a touchpad. MMI

styletome.com

touch enables the driver to control many functions intuitively; for example, the navigation destination can be entered by tracing the letters on the pad. MMI navigation plus is networked in a novel fashion with the advanced driver assistance and safety systems. It follows the route in advance during driving and provides the data to the control units for the automatic transmission, the headlights and for the ACC stop & go function. Their enhanced intelligence enables these systems to recognize complex scenarios and to make anticipatory decisions to assist the driver. The new technologies include a night vision assist with marking of detected pedestrians, the Audi pre sense safety system as well as – in the course of 2010 – a speed limit display. Another high-end solution on board the new A8 is the full LED headlights, which use light emitting diodes for all light functions. They give the luxury sedan an unmistakable appearance even in daylight and even more so after the fall of darkness. The revolutionary optics used in these headlights mean a departure from the tubular light modules commonly used today. The full LED headlights herald a new chapter in lighting technology. The new A8 starts off with either of two engines, a 4.2 FSI with 273 kW (372 hp) and a 4.2 TDI, packing 258 kW (350 hp). They will be followed by a 3.0 TDI with 184 kW (250 hp). All engines afford increased power and torque – but their fuel consumption has dropped by 13 to 22 percent, thanks to intelligent and efficient technologies like the recuperation system and innovative thermal management. A second variant of the 3.0 TDI will follow at a later date. It provides 150 kW (204 hp) of power, drives the front wheels and consumes only 6.0 liters per 100 km (39.20 US mpg) in the EU driving cycle. That corresponds to a CO2 emission rate of 159 grams per km (255.89 g/mile) – a value hitherto unattained in the luxury segment. <

ing his first inspirations, “I wanted to be a singer and I knew that this was the music that I wanted to sing.” Smooth singing

Don’t Miss The Beat By: Varinia Pereira Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Beginnings

Michael Steven Bublé born in 1975 in Burnaby, British Columbia, grew up listening to the greatest singers of all time with his grandfather’s huge collection of records including Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, the Mills Brothers and of course Frank Sinatra. Bublé has said in many interviews recount-

> With smooth vocals and songs that transcend generations of music, this modern crooner is the Sinatra of the new millennium.

Getting on the road to stardom wasn’t an easy one for Bublé. He quickly realized that marketing that kind of ‘old school’ romantic music would be a difficult task in a hip-hop, rock and pop crazed world. At the age of 25, after years of doing talent shows, hotel lounges and conventions, he was ready to give up on his dream and become a journalist. But in 2000, he received an unexpected opportunity. A man named Michael McSweeney, an aide to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, saw one of these lounge acts Bublé performed and booked him at Mulroney’s daughter’s wedding. At the wedding Bublé was introduced to Grammy Award-Winning Producer David Foster. His journey was just beginning. Foster was unsure as to how to market Bublé in the modern music world so he signed him on the agreement that Bublé would raise $500,000 himself to cover production costs. Bublé was successful. In 2003 after years of struggle to bring the charm of old style music back to life, he released his first album “Michael Bublé” which became a worldwide success. The debut album incorporated Bublé’s many talents and gave the world a taste of this hipster’s smooth vocals. The self-titled album brought back favorites from various eras including “Fever” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” You might think you know

Heart

This year Bublé has not only been successful in his career, but also in his personal life. He first met Argentinean beauty Luisana Loreley Lopilato de la Torre after one of his concerts in Buenos Aires. It was recently revealed that in late 2009, he proposed to her in Argentina. “They’re ecstatic. They’re adorable, in love and laugh all day long,” Bublé’s rep Liz Rosenberg said on People.com. But his heart doesn’t stop there, in January of this year Bublé joined other singing sensations, Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis and JLS in using their voices to raise money for Haiti with a charity single. Bublé will be singing his heart out here in Orlando at the Amway arena on March 10. This is one singer that no matter how young or how old you are, you are sure to love his beautiful ballads and upbeat renditions of some of the greatest songs. <

He is starting off the New Year on a high note with his recent album “Crazy Love” that has sold more than five million copies already. The music is calming at times, happy, romantic, deep and full of emotion. “We wanted to treat this music with the love and respect it deserves, but the important thing was to capture a spirit and energy and that wasn’t confined to any particular musical era,” Bublé says of his newest album. “Crazy Love” features the single, “Haven’t Met You Yet.” It’s one of those songs that you hear and it just sticks in your head like a piece of pink bubble gum. It’s cheery and catchy and carries an upbeat tempo and message reminiscent of the Beatles. For Bublé, overcoming the greatness of the musical giants he was reinterpreting was easy because he sung them in a different way. He puts his own spin on them.

> So here’s the problem: you packed on a few pounds over the holidays and are now scrambling to lose the weight before bathing suit season...right? Luckily for you, there are a few solutions. Of course, you could always join a gym. While that’s not the most cost effective choice, it’s a viable option that will certainly help you lose your unwanted weight. On the other hand, you could take your workouts outside, utilizing the beautiful Florida sunshine. The best part is it’s free! Exercising outdoors benefits more than just your wallet. It naturally gives your body the fresh air and good old Vitamin D it needs. It’s also beneficial to your mind. The outdoors provides a serene setting, allowing your mind to forget about the days’ stresses and focus on nothing else but the task at hand.

Taking it to The Streets By: Leah Dieter Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Sound good but not quite sure where to start? Here are some ideas for quick yet effective outside workouts. First, start off with some stretching. There’s nothing more important than making sure your muscles are nice and stretched out so you avoid a pulled, or worse, torn, muscle. Once you’re ready, do some cardio. Ride your bike, strap on some roller blades, go for a jog…anything to get your blood pumping and your muscles warmed up. A good warm-up is essential in providing good results. If you’re lucky enough to

live by the water, canoeing or kayaking are terrific ways to get your cardio workout while also toning upper body muscles. And, you could always go for a 10 to 15 minute power walk on the beach. To properly perform power walking, you need to use good posture: keep your chin up and look straight ahead in front of you; be sure your shoulders are back. Keep your arms bent at a ninety-degree angle and swing them with your fists coming up to shoulder level before swinging back. After cardio, do some simple exercises. Lunges, park bench dips, push-ups, and even pull-ups, if there’s a park with a pull-up bar nearby, are great exercises that really work out the targeted muscle groups. The best part about them is that all of these exercises are simple and you don’t need any special equipment or weights to do them. So there you have it. If this hasn’t convinced you to take your workout routine outdoors, take a look outside while you’re stuck in the gym. See that gorgeous sunshine? Exactly. Go out and enjoy the beautiful weather and just get moving! <

The best part about them is that all of these exercises are simple and you don’t need any special equipment or weights to do them.

>> Ask Dr. Clark

Q: I have been researching the best way to treat my sundamaged skin. Several people have told me laser resurfacing is the only way to correct brown spots, wrinkles, and laxity. Is this true?

E-mail your health questions or concerns to Orlando Plastic Surgeon Dr. Clifford Clark: info@orlandoai.com

styletome.com

A: The first place to start is by stopping the damage. Sunscreen and a bronzer will be better for you than a tan. One option can be over the counter potions, however they have limited effectiveness. Retin A is by far

and away the most effective single cream. Adding bleaching agents such as hydroquinone is particularly effective for brown spots, and comes mixed with Retin A in the formulation of Tri-Luma®. Light chemical peels can also help. Laser / Light based technology such as BBL treatment; Fraxel® and Erbium laser can have some downtime but are very effective for more damaged skin.

If you choose the laser approach you may want to start with examining the credentials of your laser physician. A board certified plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist is a good place to start. A Nurse Practitioner or Physicians Assistant often use the laser in conjunction with the doctor, and are often excellent clinicians. Sit down and discuss your problem, your treatment goals and the potential complications.

Health & Beauty

>Ready, set, stop! Women looking to stop the clock (or turn it back) are finding that, between professional facials and laser treatments, a bevy of battery operated devices designed for at home use are delivering real results worth buzzing about.

home exfoliation, I’m still hooked on Crystalift, a compact at-home Microdermabrasion machine that I’ve endorsed before. The Crystalift machine is incredibly easy to use; simply plug it in, drop in the crystal container, choose your intensity setting and sweep the micro wand across your face in sections ($199 at crystalift.com).

Do Try This at Home

For the past six months, I’ve been testing an at-home device aimed at improving the appearance of my skin: NuFace, an FDA cleared skin care tool that calls upon microcurrent technology to stimulate muscles and tighten skin ($325 at Florida Vein Care Cosmetic Center and The Ritz Carlton Spa Orlando Grande Lakes).

Plug in to Luxury Beauty at Home By: Carolyn Brundage Read more at: StyleToMe.com

After applying the Conductivity Gel that came along with the NuFace device and amping the unit up to its highest setting, I glided the shiny silver probes over my face as instructed. I didn’t feel any sensation to speak of, but my cheeks wore a faint blush post procedure, giving me hope that some benefits had been realized. After a few weeks of use, my personal trainer commented that my skin looked amazing — this from a woman whose only other compliment in the past year was “your rotator cuffs look good in that shirt,” — not exactly scientific proof of efficacy, but a gold seal of approval as far as I’m concerned. Results are cumulative so every day use, and patience, is a must. Turn Back the Clock

I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the results I’ve gotten from Nu Skin’s Galvanic Spa System II, featuring adjusting currents and interchangeable heads that can be used to refresh the appearance of the face, scalp and body ($285 at nuskin.com).

NuFace

I use this device exclusively on my eyes, utilizing the Spot Treatment head, largely because the larger probes on the Nuface device are not recommended for the delicate under eye skin.

Zeno Hot Spot

Once a month, I also swear by medical Microdermabrasion treatments at my favorite medical spa but for less intense, atCrystalift

styletome.com

The results are better than those achievable with OTC Microdermabrasion creams, but less impressive than those garnered from professional Microdermabrasion treatments. Blemish Busters

It’s not just wrinkles that keep us up at night, some experts say that as many as one in two of adults also has to deal with acne, no matter our age. Not to worry ladies, for less than 40 bucks you can say “buh-bye” to blemishes with the FDA approved Zeno Hot Spot, a handheld electronic beauty gadget that helps blemishes disappear faster than normal thanks to a bacteria killing heat pulse. Treatment takes two-and-a-half minutes (per zit) and most blemishes require two to three treatments ($39.99 at myzeno.com). I swear by Thermaclear, an acne-clearing device that uses a two-second Thermal Pulse Technology similar to the laser technology used by dermatologists to zap zits. The device neutralizes acne-causing bacteria under the surface of the skin, so breakouts disappear up to four times faster than usual. Those looking for a budget buy will undoubtedly like the much lower price of the Zeno Hot Spot while those who believe time is money will see significant savings with Thermaclear. Thermaclear sells for about $150 at thermaclear.com but takes just two seconds to work versus the two-and-a-half minutes Zeno’s zit zapper requires. And since most of us are juggling the demands of work, family and a stacked social calendar, every minute of beauty sleep counts. <

> OSTYLE:

Why did you decide to become a chef? GREG:

I first became interested in becoming a chef when I was a fairly young boy. I was cooking with my grandmother and my great grandmother. They were teaching me how to make homemade breads. Which was fascinating. There was actually a time in the fifth grade where I did a report on how to make bread. A lot of kids thought that was weird. Then on my 13th birthday, my birthday was held at a pizza place where you got to make your own pizzas. So that was when I said, ‘I’m going to be a chef when I grow up,’ officially. OSTYLE:

So you knew you wanted to be a chef when you were 13 years old?

ecutive chef partner of one. They asked me where I wanted to go, and I chose Orlando. And so I opened up that restaurant out here and I was there for about 5 1/2 years. OSTYLE:

Now, the reason that I’m asking about your experience at Roy’s is that when you came to Tchoup Chop there were some major menu changes. GREG:

One of the things that Chef Emeril told me on practically my first day – or really even before I started was that he wanted me to feel completely comfortable and to do anything that I wanted with the menu. And that I shouldn’t feel hindered by anything that was already going on. And to think of it as a completely fresh start.

day. We transitioned over rather than make a rash move all at once. OSTYLE:

What were some of your goals with the menu changes? GREG:

Both Chef Emeril and I believe in having bold flavors and that you should be true to the ingredients that you’re using, letting the ingredients express themselves. To make sure that the dish makes sense, that this thing that’s in it makes sense, and that they all come together in a way that the dish tells a story from start to finish. OSTYLE:

So what’s your favorite thing on the menu that you’ve designed? Or is that unfair to ask?

OSTYLE: GREG:

That’s the first time I said it. And I pretty much stuck with that all through high school. I started working washing dishes when I was in the 10th grade. I went straight to culinary school out of high school. I worked almost full-time in a restaurant. I got promoted from dishwasher up to cooking shortly at a little mom and pop place in Stone Mountain, Georgia – and just learned the basics of good home cooking really. Then I was on my way. OSTYLE:

Could you tell us about your experience with Chef Roy Yamaguchi?

How did that happen? Did Emeril reach out to you? GREG:

I had met Emeril a number of times through the years. In fact, he and I first met; it was a really funny coincidence, at a magazine event, where I was voted Chef of the Year. There were two years that it happened. One year it was Chef of the Year. The other was Best Chef in Orlando. Chef Emeril personally handed me the Chef of the Year award. And that was actually our first meeting. We met again another year where the same thing happened, where he was again there as a guest host, and I was receiving some awards.

GREG:

I started working out there in his Hawaii restaurant. I was only planning on living out there for a year. Just getting some experience and having fun living in Hawaii. And after about 6 months, Chef Roy called me into his office and offered me a Sous Chef job. And I said, well, I’m honored, but I’m actually going back to Atlanta, where I’m from. And everybody thought that I was going a little crazy. And you know, after I thought about it, after a month or two went by, I thought, you know what, this is an incredible opportunity. So I said, I’d like to take you up on that offer. And so I took it, and after some amount of time they started opening up more restaurants and lo and behold they offered me the opportunity to be the ex-

OSTYLE:

That’s a great way to meet a future employer, receiving a Chef of the Year award. So what do you do when Chef Emeril tells you that you should do whatever you want?

GREG:

That’s like asking a parent if they have a favorite child. You’ve got to love it enough to put it on the menu in the first place. And so you know, for me, the best way that I can answer that would be as we change seasonally, the newest and most exciting things with the season are going to be what’s fun for me. The weather just changed and now these baby brussels sprouts are coming out. Or my fisherman just called me up and he’s got the most beautiful black grouper you’ve ever seen. So that’s how you get excited. Look how beautiful these vegetables are. Look at this fish. And then you can start creating a dish. Using all these things, putting them all together in some exciting new way, that would be my favorite dish of the moment. OSTYLE:

If you weren’t a chef, what would you be doing?

GREG:

GREG:

Well, when Chef Emeril says he’s familiar with your style of cooking, and that he knows what you’re capable of and has a lot of respect for you. Well, that makes you feel great, one thing. And, of course, now you know that you can’t let this guy down. And so you start by thinking what would you like to cook. What you would like to eat. You just do it one dish at a time. I didn’t take the menu and then hand in a new one the next

That’s a great question. I ask myself that sometimes, and I’ve got so many weird answers that it wouldn’t make sense to put them in one sentence. If I started from the beginning and didn’t choose that path, I’d probably be a doctor. Obviously, it’s a little late for me to go to medical school, but it’s nowhere near being a chef, right. <

Island Inspiration By: Holly V. Kapherr Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Edward Wilkerson, designer for Lafayette 148 New York, shares a Resort 2010 collection that’s both classic chic and sandy island goddess. When it’s time to start a new collection, Edward Wilkerson takes a trip. It might to be Italy or Spain, Vietnam or Hawaii, but wherever he goes, he finds inspiration.Wilkerson is the designer for acclaimed women’s wear label Lafayette 148 New York, and with its classic silhouettes and easy-breezy feel, it’s clear what his inspiration for Resort 2010 stemmed from: St. Tropez. “I landed in St. Tropez to find inspiration for this collection and I instantly was stunned by how much fashion was around me. This was what I was looking for my entire life,” says Wilkerson. He browses flea markets all over the world, looking at artisan jewelry, handmade textiles—all the while people-watching, looking for his next catch. There must have been a lot of elegance in St. Tropez, because that’s exactly what Resort 2010 for Lafayette 148 New York is: it’s dripping with the stuff.

Edward Wilkerson

styletome.com

Wilkerson aspired to be an architect in his early years, but fashion led him astray to the High School of Art and Design in New York. It’s easy to see where architecture fits into his designs. Wilkerson’s clothes are struc-

tured and tailored impeccably to be flattering while still breathing airy life to staple pieces. “My customers are used to a certain fit; building a house and building a garment are one and the same. If the structure isn’t there, the piece will just fall flat,” he says. Wilkerson’s taste in fabrics is keen and his designs make the most of each stitch. Because of the fabrics he chooses, the garments do exactly what he wants them to do— they flow. Just look at the show-stopping blue tie-dye halter dress, cocktail length in front while draping to a train in the back. Talk about high drama. As the model walks, the train flutters behind her, light as air, like butterfly wings or peacock feathers. Essentials from this collection include classic wide-leg white trousers. “They’re elegant and sporty at the same time. Put white trousers with almost anything and you have instant glam,” he says. The Resort 2010 collection showed fluttery tuxedo shirts in chiffon, safari jackets, and tie-dye tunics all paired with the classic white pant. Other essentials, according to Wilkerson, include a sexy white mini skirt, the safari suits, and an oversized black sequin smoking jacket. “It’s a challenge to stay warm and dress for evening without pulling on a fur or something equally heavy. Luckily, se-

people

quins are back,” Wilkerson says. He’s right; and this belted black sequin smoking jacket takes cool spring nights and turns up the heat. Wilkerson is a big fan of shopping smarter, not harder. Instead of working the classics to death, he suggests that women step away from what they’re used to and find signature pieces that pair well with what they already have. “You can easily kick up your existing wardrobe with animal print, tribal designs, anything that’s hot for the season. Try on something you thought you’d never buy, go for something that’s not typically your thing, you might surprise yourself.”

taking classic shapes and turning them into art. The draping train in chiffon and silkcharmeuse is a reoccurring theme throughout eveningwear, both in strapped, halter, and strapless designs. Try a chunky statement necklace in sparkling silver and bejeweled nude or silver heels and the evening gown gets an instant update.

Try on something you thought you’d never buy, go for something that’s not typically your thing, you might surprise yourself.”

One of these things is the oversized tribal jewelry seen everywhere on runways for Resort 2010. These pieces are for maximum drama—huge pieces of abalone shell draped around the neck, enormous wooden cuffs adorned with gold studs—these accessories are not for the faint of heart. However, Wilkerson does find value in understated jewels, too. “The best investment a woman can make is one strand of perfect pearls. They go with absolutely everything,” he says.

Other decades have been making quite a splash in the late-2009/early-2010 collections. Elements of the 50s, 60s and 80s translate into the cinched waists, balloon dresses and vivid colors seen on the runway. What’s the best way to take something retro and make it modern? Accessorize. Wilkerson says, “Look for belts, bags, hats and shoes that can change everything you own. The slightest change makes the biggest difference. Pop the color, cinch the waist, draw the eye to your feet—anything that will make your outfit an unexpected surprise.”

But this season, it’s not about understated; it’s about the wow-factor. Lafayette 148 New York’s eveningwear is an example of

In an age when print is being replaced by digital media, Wilkerson sings praises to the fashion magazine, citing it as a necessary

and relevant muse. “I need fashion magazines because I have to have something I can touch; I’m a very tactile person. I have to see it in front of me, manipulate it, and burn it into my muscle memory. When I start designing a new collection, I do it by hand. I can barely turn on a computer, anyway,” he jokes. Wilkerson believes that his fashion is perennial and can be worn by women from their 20s to their 50s and beyond. “All women can wear the same thing when they wear my clothes,” he says, “It’s all about adjusting the fit to make it work.” Wilkerson’s ‘fit model’ is in her 50s and a size 12—a refreshing departure from clothes that look fabulous on idealistic model bodies but can’t be worn day-to-day. “It’s refreshing, but it’s also realistic. I want to make clothes that fit real women.” Lafayette 148 New York’s Resort 2010 collection, found at Neiman Marcus, is literally a breath of fresh air. Edward Wilkerson’s designs take the silhouettes of fall and winter, employ new fabrics, and can’t help but elicit a smile from the most discerning critic. Fun, flirty and easy-to-wear, this collection is made for lounging poolside enveloped in sunshine and good prose. <

March 21 - April 19 Mars, your ruling planet, finishes a long retrograde cycle on the 10th.You are starting a time of great progress and accomplishment. Swim wear in a bright paisley motif to pair with a red or pink chiffon cover up would be a perfect early birthday gift to give yourself. The stars favor investing in fine art now. Frame originals to complement the entry to a library or den. Select a special accent piece to position over the fireplace. Lucky days: 6, 17, 26

April 20 - May 20 Your 12th house of dreams is strong now. Heed a message, which lingers upon waking. It concerns the purchase of an estate home with exceptional gardens. A bright yellow tankini is the ideal swimwear choice. Take a dip in the pool as the sun sets to facilitate spiritual dreams. Fabric flowers around the neckline of a complimentary cover up complete a look, which will take you with ease and style from the beach to an important rendezvous. Lucky days: 8, 19, 28

May 21 - June 21 Jupiter and Uranus highlight your 10th house of fame and fortune. You must be innovative and original in order to succeed. Think big; be optimistic in selecting new premises for your business. Install walls of clear glass to overlook your fountain or aviary. Add a Waterford crystal vase with exotic feathers to suggest an impression of air, flight and space. Don a polka dot pattern scarf, artistically draped over a single shoulder strap style swimsuit. Lucky days: 2, 12, 21

June 22 - July 22 The first half of the month brings an exceptionally positive Mercury influence. A tip from a friend or acquaintance helps you close a really sweet real estate deal with aplomb. Be a good listener. Keep up with current events to glean helpful information. Add coral and seashell jewelry to decorate beach sandals and bags. A bandeau style swimsuit in pure white to honor the Moon, your cosmic ruler, would complete the perfect look. Lucky days: 4, 15, 24

July 23 - August 22 Mars and Venus in favorable fire sign aspects usher in a really spectacular month. A cherished desire is attained near the first day of spring. Design a ballroom or add a home theater to your new residence. You’re gregarious and like to entertain with flair. Swimwear with jewel accents fastened with decorative rings at the hips and décolleté would be perfect. Dashing and dramatic, you’d be pleased with a daring Brazilian style bikini. Lucky days: 7, 16, 25

August 23 - Sept. 22 The Sun and several planets activate your 7th house of partnership. Others offer new ideas and options. Compromise and adapt. You are swept forward by projects others initiate. This will allow you to swim laps in your Olympic size pool with ease. You revel in staying in tiptop physical shape. Lucky days: 9, 10, 27

Best Friends

A Stranger In the Sky

Newcomers stick to me like Velcro Angels borrow smiles from me I am young, strong and full of glee Here there is no hurt, tears, and love is free

He emanated a sense of peace That could only come from Heaven He could not contain his bliss This story, I did not want to miss

Please listen, dear sweet family Live fully and with joy With time do not compete At Heaven’s gate, again someday we shall meet.

I asked about this serenity He gracefully shared with me When he was done I left in awe Keep reading, you shall see Heaven decided, an Angel like Leon God felt did not belong on earth But amongst the Angels to help others Where he belonged from his birth

When you miss me look above, Each night I light the stars for you In the morning, as sunrays touch your face Feel kisses from me, time or space cannot erase

He was an Angel in disguise All the time he was here with us Bringing joy to all who knew him He made every morning feel like spring

Meanwhile I’ll see you in your dreams Meet me for a midnight twirl Around the moon, my darlings Let me take you for a whirl...

But, there was one thing left to do That was to send this note to you 12 days after he said goodbye 12 days after he bid adieu

Thank you Jeannie for writing us such a beautiful, heartfelt, joyous poem of our sweet Leon. Cathleen & Sven Bode

In his own extra special way He wanted to let you know
