PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Happy summer! OK, so maybe it’s not official yet, but we’re in Central Florida and it’s May. We don’t need a calendar to tell us when it’s time to slip into a summertime state of mind. My family and I have been keeping busy, but also hitting the beach to enjoy the recent stretch of beautiful weather—nice and warm, without the humidity! We had a wonderful Easter, and hope you enjoyed your Easter or Passover as well. I always find these holidays to be an important time for family gatherings and reminding ourselves of everything we have to be grateful for. But back to the present... Summer is peak wedding season, and we’re ushering it in with our annual bridal issue. As our longtime readers have come to expect, it’s packed with up-to-date wedding information and inspiration for those of you preparing to take that next big step. Read on to discover some current matrimonial fashion trends and unique bridal bling for your hair, to get advice for being the perfect bridesmaid, and to see creative wedding cake ideas and fun weddinginspired fashion accessories. Also, explore a few favorite area venues for hosting a wedding, and compare your dream wedding price tag to that of some recently married celebrities. Whether or not you’re getting ready to wed, our stunning fashion spread should impress. We’ve assembled some beautiful artwork to portray a variety of striking bridal fashions by local talent on page 60, as well as the inspiring Afternoon in White feature fashion spread starting on page 36. And, since we realize not everyone is focused on wedding plans this month, we’ve included plenty of other content, too. There’s a story on John Mayer, an up-close look at the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, an interview with Miss World, and a travel feature on the gorgeous Pelican Grand Beach Resort, which you’ll find on page 18. And, if you’re a foodie, don’t miss the story on Chef Edgardo Raul on page 26. I’d like to offer my ardent thanks to our enthusiastic readership, and to our incredible staff and contributors who, like always, went above and beyond to put together another compelling issue.

12

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

I must thank our advertisers, too, without whom none of this would be possible. These are companies that offer top-quality products and services to us all, and that do so much for our local economy, so I encourage you to support them when the opportunity presents itself. Summer is a prime time for reaching consumers who are ready to spend! In addition to the increased activity of locals and staycationers, tourists pour into the region. Those who stay in many of our finest luxury hotels and resorts will find our most recent issue in their rooms. I’ll leave you with a teaser for our next issue, the “Out of the Ordinary” special. It will feature some male-oriented skin and grooming articles, as well as cover the essentials: cars, craft beer, and food! Plus, we’ll share ideas for unique first dates, showcase an unusual art show, discuss the health benefits of turkey mushrooms, inspect some odd tech, and more. If there’s something you’d like to see covered in an upcoming issue, “like” us on Facebook and let us know. We love to hear from our readers. Until next time, be well and enjoy yourselves! Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode Publisher

The inaugural Fashion for Wishes Spring Fashion Show took place on March 25th high above the Amway Arena at One80 Skytop Lounge. Local models and celebrities walked the runway in Spring Looks from Central Florida’s most elegant boutiques. Proceeds for this event benefitted Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida. Drink specials and featured cocktails kept the party running all night long! Every spring, the award-winning Downtown Brew takes over Church Street with craft beer, live music, and fun! The 5th annual event—hosted by Church Street District and COX Media—took place on April 1st and featured unlimited samples of over 40 different types of craft beer. Attendees drank up and voted on which brewery took home the prestigious 16

Hardcore and casual fans from around the world celebrated their passion for all things Star Wars—all on the cusp of new Star Wars movies and television shows! The beloved convention took place April 13th-16th at the Orange County Convention Center. From April 20th-23rd, more than 150 bands rocked out over 15 locations throughout Downtown Orlando on indoor and outdoor stages at the 17th Annual Florida Music Festival. TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

The Pelican Grand Beach Resort SOAK IN THE SEASIDE ELEGANCE OF FORT LAUDERDALE’S PREMIER WATERFRONT RESORT! By Riesa Pascal

Rest, Relaxation, Recreation, Relief, Rejuvenation... This spring I discovered R&R and much more during an unforgettable weekend stay at the newly enhanced Pelican Grand Beach Resort. After having already discussed our expectations for the getaway, my companion and I could hardly contain our excitement as we pulled into valet and were greeted by the smiling staff. Fortunately for us, our imaginations hadn’t led us astray as the following weekend proved that the Pelican Grand was all we had imagined and then some. Still basking in the glow of an extensive multi-million dollar renovation, the resort sits regally on 500 ft. of private, pristine beachfront in sunny Fort Lauderdale. We soon made our way through the grand lobby and up to our room on the seventh floor, high above the sandy shores. From city or ocean view guest rooms to luxurious suites, the Pelican Grand offers a vast array of accommodation options for its many guests. 156 Key West-style guest rooms—including 105 oceanfront suites with balconies—allow guests the option of waking up to the sight of a magnificent sunrise and the sound of waves crashing on the shore. In addition to miles of white-sand beaches, Fort Lauderdale also provides high fashion, fine art museums, breathtaking gardens, historic homes, and an exhilarating nightlife—all of which are located just steps from the resort! Along Las Olas Boulevard, one of the most notable locations, you will find with boutique shopping, chic cafes and delicious food options such as Louie Bossi, an amazing Italian restaurant. When my companion and I finally managed to venture off the gorgeous Pelican Grand property, we ended up at the Italian eatery where we enjoyed an exquisite Margherita D.O.P. pizza. As we came to find out, D.O.P. meant that all the products utilized in our pizza were certified by the Italian government. In fact, if any food item is not made in Louie Bossi’s kitchen, then it’s being imported from Italy. This fun fact explains why you won’t see items such as chicken parmesan, chicken piccata, or chicken marsala on their menu. Even though those are widely accepted as Italian cuisine, they are actually Italian American fare, and Louie Bossi prides itself on serving deliciously authentic Italian dishes. The following day was Saturday and it began as I wish every weekend should…with a delectable, savory breakfast on the sweeping veranda at OCEAN2000. Not long afterwards,

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

my companion and I found ourselves stretched out under the complementary chairs and umbrellas of our coastal-chic waterfront retreat. Between the private beach, a beautiful zero entry pool, and Fort Lauderdale’s only lazy river, you might think we’d enjoyed enough water for the day, but that was far from true. After all, we were in the yachting capital of the world! It only made sense to go enjoy some of those views from the water. Our adventure with Riverfront Gondola Tours explored the backwaters of Fort Lauderdale at a leisurely-pace on a quiet electric powered, eco-friendly boat. Cameras snapped away as we cruised past beautiful homes and large yachts on picturesque waterways. I didn’t think it was possible to be more relaxed than I was in that moment, but experiencing pure pampering at PURE Spa a few hours later proved me quite wrong. The nearly 3,000 sq. ft. spa is based on the Swedish luxury lifestyle that invites light into their space. At every point in the spa you can see astonishing ocean views, and if you’re lucky, you might even see 20 pelicans gracefully soaring past your window, which the staff affectionately calls a Pelican Blessing. Products used within their services are all organic, and the multi-licensed technicians perform every type of service, from body wraps and waxing to facials and massages. I indulged in a skillful mani-pedi with a Maria Åkerberg essential oil hand scrub and massage oils. Perhaps I relaxed a little too much, as

one minute I was soaking my feet in Dead Sea Salts and minerals and the next my nails were suddenly finished, groomed and perfectly polished. There was no question that our final dinner should take place at OCEAN2000, the property’s signature restaurant that also happens to be Fort Lauderdale’s only waterfront restaurant. After learning that Travel + Leisure recently named The Pelican Grand a number one spot for brunch in America, it wasn’t surprising that our dining experience turned out to be everything we had hoped for. We were seated on the stunning outdoor veranda with nothing but candlelight, tiki torches, and the starry night sky to light our menu and our view of the deep blue. At the helm of Executive Chef Derek Rosen, the menu offered regionally influenced cuisine that blends local products and character with a little Latin spice. We kicked off our dining adventure with piquant appetizers of Mojo Pulled Pork Steamed Buns and Soy-Honey-Lime Braised Pork Belly. When it came to the main course, it was an easy decision for both of us. My companion went with the succulent Maple and Guava BBQ-Glazed Salmon served with fava bean, crispy potato hay, sweet potato and jicama succotash. Meanwhile, I opted for the perfectly prepared Soy-Miso Black Grouper with bok choy, king crab bamboo rice and

mango-coconut curry. A side of their creamy four-cheese blend Lobster Mac & Cheese was a must-try and completed our exceptional meal. Over the course of the weekend, my companion and I experienced first-rate hospitality at Fort Lauderdale’s Pelican Grand Beach Resort. The property truly does everything necessary to ensure an extraordinary stay for leisure and business travelers alike. Pamper yourself to perfection with a signature spa treatment at PURE Spa before you tempt your taste buds with enticing culinary creations at OCEAN2000. Enjoy everything on-property from hand-delivered lunch on the beach to sweet tooth satisfaction at The Emporium ice cream parlor. It’s time to steal your loved ones away this summer (or just yourself!) for an unforgettable escape where you will enjoy the exotic beauty of a tropical island without having to step foot out of Florida. Whether shopping-‘til-youdrop on nearby Las Olas Boulevard or dancing to the beat of live entertainment in the O2K Lounge, you will walk away with a deeper understanding of why The Pelican Grand Beach Resort is such a special destination for travelers around the world who are seeking a spirited, yet sophisticated beach getaway. TAKE TO THE

SKIES

BY ELLIOT MINTZER OF BOOMERANG AIR CHARTER

For some people their first trip to the Bahamas is on a Cruise Line…Destination Nassau. Although some enjoy it, Nassau was not what some envisioned when they thought of the Bahamas: white sand beaches, azure skies and turquois water. If it’s relaxation, natural beauty and authentic Bahamian culture you’re looking for, then the Abaco Islands are for you. Crystal-clear water, one of the top-ten beaches in the world and excellent fishing are just a few reasons that everyone should see this northern most area of the Bahamas, nothing beats the Abacos. Only 65 miles from the US at the closest point, these islands offer a wide variety of fun places and serene beauty rarely seen so close to the U.S. HOW TO GET THERE The Abacos are made up of the two main islands of Great Abaco and Little Abaco, and several smaller islands with names like Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana, Man-o-War, Elbow Cay, Lubbers Quarters and more. There are a number of ways to travel to there, including by boat, but for this article, we’ll take to the skies. and talk

20

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

about Marsh Harbor and Elbow Cay… Most people traveling to the Abacos fly into Marsh Harbour International Airport and there are several options to get you there. If you are looking to save time and enjoy the experience, private air charter operators at Orlando executive airport utilize a number of different planes that can seat up to 9 passengers, climb to 28,000 feet and cruise at 300 MPH while providing personalized service. This means that Marsh Harbour is less than 90 minutes away. MARSH HARBOUR Marsh Harbour, located on Great Abaco Island, is the largest settlement in the islands, with a population of just over 5,000. It’s a short distance from the airport which makes it an excellent base of vacation operations as many of the other islands are easily accessible by catching a ferry or renting a boat for a little island hopping. ELBOW CAY Take the boat or ferry ride to Elbow Cay. The 120-foot red and white striped Hope Town Lighthouse (circa 1863), and harbor are right

off a post card, and the adjoining village is uncrowded and charming. One of the best ways to see the island is to rent a golf cart or bicycle, which is the main mode of transportation on Elbow Cay. Locals and visitors alike will be seen cruising island style from one end of Elbow Cay to the other. Once you’ve settled in, load up the golf cart or boat and head west to Tahiti Beach. Accessible only on foot, by bike or boat, this gem of secluded white sand arcs out into calm clear water and is ideal for swimming, walking or just exploring (ignore the “Private” signs you will pass, as the road to Tahiti Beach is public). Boaters can pull right up to a few feet off the sand. The Abacos are the “real” Bahamas-. The experience will have you coming back again and again and the memories will last a lifetime.

Rolls says 80 percent of the Dawn’s body panels are unique, but it certainly feels like a roomier, sleeker version of the Wraith, but with the option to fold away the roof with one touch of a button. The dawn is graceful and captivating, with an exquisite design that puts it at the top of its class. It shares the drivetrain, suspension, and structural elements of the Wraith, and both ride on the same 122.5-inch wheelbase, but it’s a bit longer and easily carries four adult passengers. It’s certain to be the most social of the super-luxury convertible cars. Plus, a twin-turbo 6.6-liter V12 powertrain and a power output of 563bhp or 420kW @ 5250rpm means you aren’t sacrificing power for comfort or style.

THE ROLLS-ROYCE BRAND IS SYNONYMOUS WITH QUALITY, SOPHISTICATION, AND EXCLUSIVITY FOR A REASON.

From the commanding Ghost to the edgy Wraith and now the dignified Dawn, these high-class cars just keep getting better. Made with luxury materials and with limitless bespoke possibilities, Rolls will create an interior and exterior color palette that inspires, and the customization doesn’t stop there. Rolls craftspeople will embroider your initials, crest, or insignia onto the seat headrest or inlay them into the veneer. The Rolls-Royce brand is synonymous with quality, sophistication, and exclusivity for a reason. There’s nothing comparable to the feelings of exhilaration and freedom felt when stepping into one of these stunning cars. Push the boundaries of life with a Rolls-Royce.

“At Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, we design without compromise, and this uncompromising approach brings new challenges with each new motor car,” says Giles Taylor, Director of Design. “In the case of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, we have designed it from the road up to deliver a striking, seductive encounter.” Rolls believes the Dawn is their sexiest Rolls-Royce yet, and they aren’t wrong.

CHEF PROFILE

Chef Edgardo Raúl THE HOMECOMING By Riesa Pascal

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

CHEF PROFILE

How the beloved chef found his way back home to Vines Grille & Wine Bar Edgardo Raúl Rodríguez didn’t always know he wanted to be a chef. In fact, the Puerto Rico native’s plan was to go to law school, but that dream changed shortly after he accepted a dishwashing job the summer before starting college. One fateful day, the kitchen was short staffed and Edgardo was called to fill in. Overnight, he began to develop a deep fascination for the high-pressure environment and work camaraderie of the kitchen. That curiosity stayed with Edgardo and led him to start cooking small meals around the home with his parents. “I would cook simple dishes like mashed potatoes, but they would turn out better than what the recipe said. That made me a little more confident so I decided I wanted to go to culinary school.” Not only was Edgardo a fast learner in the kitchen, one might even say cooking was in his blood! His grandmother was a well-known cook in Puerto Rico who sometimes received hundreds of weekly orders from people trying to purchase her meals. In a move that would surely make her proud, Edgardo attended a culinary school on the island and then the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Florida before starting his first real cooking job at a former Orlando restaurant named Blue Bistro. Two years later, Edgardo made his next career jump to The Ravenous Pig. “That’s where I learned how to make everything from scratch and fine tune my crafts. I developed more of a passion and more of a respect for the ingredients. Buying whole animals, whole everything and using every single part of it.”

three great years before departing to enter the world of fine dining at Wolfgang Puck. Just four months later, he returned to Vines Grille for another three years before accepting an offer from neighboring Eddie V’s. Two years after that, Edgardo made a career jump to Kokino Restaurant and then just 6 months later, his heart called him back to the job he had enjoyed the most. The restaurant that had always felt like home for a multitude of reasons. “The purchasing power that we have here at Vines is a freedom that a lot of other people don’t get. I can buy the best of the best of anything. I’m proud to work here because we’re one of the only mom-and-pop restaurants on Dr. Phillips so we can do what the other guys can’t. They’re limited by corporate constraints and they can’t evolve like we have and be fluid like we can be.” So what does the future hold for Executive Chef Edgardo Raúl and Vines Grille? Well for one, you can expect to see a lot more fusion dishes, more seafood and the start of a new dry aging program! Edgardo also looks forward to purchasing more organic products and ethically-treated animals. “What I want to do here is bring back that level of exclusivity. Dishes we can make at any time that you can’t get anywhere else. A menu that we can change out whenever we want. That’s what we’re doing right now. We’re rejuvenated. You’re going to get an experience that you can’t get anywhere else.” Edgardo has had many kitchen jobs over the years, but each of them has played an important role in helping him to become the exceptional chef he is today. From learning how to create new menus every day at Blue Bistro to making everything from scratch at The Ravenous Pig to understanding the fine-dining aspects of Eddie V’s and more—Edgardo has taken a little bit of knowledge from every restaurant and a little bit of technique from every chef he’s met along the way. Fortunately for patrons of Vines Grille, Edgardo is just as happy to have returned as we are to have him back.

“This is home. I’ve been here more than anywhere else. Coming back felt like I had 2 days off.”

In 2008, two years later, Edgardo accepted his first offer to work at Vines Grille & Wine Bar. He served as Sous Chef for the award-winning steakhouse for Vines Grille & Wine Bar 7533 Sand Lake Rd. Orlando, FL 32819 Reservation #: 407.351.1227 vinesgrille.com

Get the Pigs! We’re Going on a

TRUFFLE HUNT!

34

| STYLETOME.COM

One of the fanciest ways to add flavor to your food is by using a truffle. Truffles are a fungus, similar to the mushroom, that grows in the roots of trees such as poplar, oak, and birch. The fungus looks more like a potato and is definitely not related to the chocolate treat commonly sold around Valentine’s Day. Truffles became popular in France during the 1800s when many truffle forests were planted. Unfortunately, World War II damaged the land where these popular delicacies grew, significantly reducing their availability.

WHAT ARE TRUFFLES USED FOR? Truffles are used for cooking, most commonly in upscale restaurants. It’s important to use care when combining truffles with other ingredients to ensure the flavor of the truffle is not overpowered by other items on the plate. The truffle should be the star of any dish. Fortunately, it doesn’t take much of this delicious fungus to liven up a meal; a tiny bit of truffle goes a long way. Often, truffles are sliced and grated onto food, such as french fries, to add flavor to an otherwise boring dish. Their woody, nutty flavor works well with fatty and bland foods, such as foie gras and pasta.

HOW MUCH DO TRUFFLES COST & WHY? Truffles are one of the most expensive foods used by chefs, and many are willing to pay up to $1200 for a pound of truffles. A recently produced black truffle in Australia weighing about 2 ¾ pounds costs between $2000 and $2500. And the cost of white truffles is typically even higher because they are more difficult to produce. Truffles only grow in specific types of soil and under specific types of trees. To find the truffles, animals with a strong sense of smell, like dogs and pigs, sniff around the trees to locate them underground, inside the tree roots. Once they are found, humans must harvest the truffles, being careful not to damage the fungus or the tree. It is this difficult process that makes truffles so expensive.

WITH A LIST OF FAMOUS EX-GIRLFRIENDS THAT ARE JUST AS REMARKABLE AS HIS CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED HIT CATALOG, WE’D BE A FOOL TO FALL FOR SOMEONE LIKE JOHN MAYER

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

FA LL IN LOVE WITH

JOHN MAYER

by Courtney Caggiano

This month is the perfect time for a latespring escape, whether you’re jet setting to a paradisiacal destination or just enjoying a relaxing weekend staycation. Wherever May might take you, and whoever you decide to take along with you, you’ll want to bring John Mayer’s latest album, The Search for Everything, to keep you company. But be warned—you’ll probably fall just as in love with him as you will with that tropical sunset you’re hoping to find. We’ve become accustomed to hearing breakup songs from the young, bad boy who we knew John Mayer to be. Those dark, sad eyes longing for stability and sleep, albums full of desperate lyrics of resounding disillusionment with lasting relationships, and that uncaring attitude and romantic intolerance all suggested that perhaps his inability to hold onto a girl might be his own fault. With a list of famous ex-girlfriends that are just as remarkable as his critically-acclaimed hit catalog, we’d be a fool to fall for someone like John Mayer—at least, we would have been until we heard The Search for Everything. This album—creatively fashioned into two episodic releases, Wave One and Wave Two— challenges everything we thought to be true

about the brooding songwriter with a song collection savoring strongly of maturity and moving on. In the first track of the second EP, “Still Feel Like Your Man,” Mayer confesses the ease with which he falls back into feeling that lingering sense of belonging, like we all do, after a relationship has met its end. This ease seems more like honesty than a weakness, as the only sign of sadness found within the song is heard in the lyrics. Mayer champions his emotions in the melodic structure of the song, crafting up a smooth bass-line and turning the spotlight away from his feelings and onto those jazzy guitar parts oozing with chill. The Search for Everything is documented water under the bridge, as well as pieced-together testimonies of the man who crossed the bridge and brought with him wisdom from the other side. John Mayer has seemed to grow up, yet we see him handle the achingly arduous task of letting go and moving on with such nonchalant charisma and unassuming grace that is translated through song as incredible strength—a far leap from the John Mayer crooning “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” or “Why Georgia.”

The intricacies of emotion and experience Mayer has intertwined in this album paints a precise picture of a master at his work—and his life, which—knowing anything about the singer’s romantic history—is impressive. This delicate portrait of the artist as an older and wiser gentleman reveals a different kind of John. All of these personal implications about the man himself are easily understood with a close listen to the album, but Mayer will sweep you off your feet well before you realize how wonderfully he has changed. The Search for Everything is subtle poetry swimming through intoxicating guitar innovation and leaving room for us to breathe. The acoustic-driven “Emoji of a Wave” tenderly coaxes you into belief that letting go can be as effortless as it sounds— because it is for John. The Search for Everything is your perfect companion as you embrace the last days of spring with John Mayer’s enchanting songs that make anything seem possible. Take it with you as you travel, have it be the soundtrack to your May romance, and fall in love with the new John Mayer.

PEOPLE

THE JOURNEY TO BECOME MISS WORLD Style Magazines sits down with Miss World 2016, Stephanie Del Valle! By Riesa Pascal, Photos By Ricardo Acevedo Photography Miss World is the oldest and largest international pageant in the world. The competition is held annually with representatives from over 130 countries. In December 2016, Puerto Rico’s Stephanie Del Valle beat contestants from all over the world to win the title of Miss World 2016 at the 66th installment in Washington, D.C. The 19-yearold was only the second Miss World to hail from Puerto Rico and the first Miss World to be crowned in the U.S. I got to catch up with the brunette beauty during a media week pit stop in Orlando. As we sat outside Starbucks in Disney Springs, Stephanie passionately shared details about her transition from teen model to world renowned beauty queen. “I found the Miss World contest and their Beauty With A Purpose projects and the amount of money it raises for kids around the world. Charity work is something that I’ve done my entire life and always had a passion for. I thought Miss World would be a great platform to spread messages of positivity and have the opportunity to make the world a better place, so I decided to participate.” The candidates involved in Miss World are required to take on Beauty with a Purpose projects in their home countries with the intention of encouraging and inspiring global humanitarianism. Since inception, more than $1 billion USD has been raised through Beauty With A Purpose and donated to charitable organizations around the world. That was a more than worthy cause for Stephanie who has spent years working with Lily’s Angels, a 50

| STYLETOME.COM

foundation that provides therapy for infants and toddlers with Down syndrome in Puerto Rico. “I decided to participate in my local pageant in Puerto Rico, but I was studying at Pace University in New York, so I would travel back and forth every single weekend for 6-7 weeks. I was really committed and driven. I really wanted this opportunity to not only represent Puerto Rico, but to spread the messages that Miss World has.” Well the hard work paid off and in March 2016, Stephanie won the Miss World Puerto Rico title. From that point on, it was constant preparation for the global competition. For Stephanie, ensuring she was well-rounded and ready to compete meant attending every class from singing and acting to public speaking, debate and even world history. “I was definitely making an effort so that even if I didn’t win, I would’ve represented my island really, really proudly.” To say she represented her island proudly, would be a huge understatement! The Miss World pageant started on November 26th and three weeks later on December 18th, Stephanie Del Valle was crowned the 66th Miss World pageant queen. “That final night I was happy with whatever the outcome. I was relaxed that day. I prayed before every single time I went out. I told myself that I don’t need to win anything because I’m

happy with the job I did, I’m happy with how I represented my island, and I’m happy with the people that I met and the experiences we’ve had. There was no moment throughout the competition that I felt like I was going to win. I never felt like I was on top. I was just having a good time and that really helped me because I wasn’t so stressed about the outcome. I just wanted to have fun and live the experience.” Well the shock of receiving the crown was only the beginning of Stephanie’s life-changing experience. After returning to Puerto Rico for her homecoming, it was time to hit the road... and the air! At the time of our interview—just 3 months into her reign—Stephanie had already traveled to Hong Kong, China and London, and had future trips planned to Indonesia, Kenya, Argentina, Fiji, Australia, Philippines, South Africa, New Zealand and even Brazil. Needless to say, being Miss World is a full-time job, so what will Stephanie do once her coveted reign is over? “I’m very passionate about music, theatre, acting, dance, and modeling. I hope for my career to take off in any of those areas, but if it doesn’t, I’ll pursue entertainment law work so I can stay in the business and help other people who have my same dream, just from a different point of view.” For now, Stephanie still has the remainder of 2017 to represent her island with pride, wear the crown with joy and showcase what it means to be Miss World.

SPOTLIGHT ON REAL ESTATE

Florida Land Deals &

THE ROARING 1920’S

I

t was the roaring twenties. We had just overcame the end of world war 1. Many families were now traveling via automobiles. Americans had disposable income and a desire to get rich. Word quickly spread about speculators making big money in Florida on land deals. The Florida government was investing massive money on infrastructure and facilities to attract future residents, tourists and land investors. Florida quickly became one of the greatest economic opportunities in the country. The quality of life looked really glamorous to those who would read about life in Florida. Millions of Americans were captivated about this amazingly attractive opportunity. Credit was easy to obtain if you had a decent job. Newspapers would write glamorous stories about land investors who doubled or tripled their profits within months. In 1922, newspapers were full of real estate advertisements, with the Miami Herald being one of the largest publications due to its enormous land advertisement section. This must have been an extremely effective marketing method because records show that two-thirds of all Florida real estate was sold by mail to speculators who had never even stepped foot in Florida.

By Hooman Hamzehloui

Speculators were making big money and the market was going crazy with rapidly rising prices. As acquisition costs went up, profit margins became tighter and tighter. Before long it was 1925, and the negative stories about speculators buying worthless swampland sight unseen were starting to spread. The IRS started scrutinizing deals, publications like Forbes Magazine started warning people to be careful because the Florida real estate boom was one big scam. You know what happened next? The bubble burst and countless speculators lost their life savings and then some. Sound familiar? That’s right, it sounds eerily similar to the modern real estate boom and bust. In the real estate boom of the 2000s, Florida experienced a similar market. Here’s a sales report for two different pieces of land that were playing “musical owners”. Both of these were single family lots.

LOT 1: Originally sold for - $580,910 on 7-15-2004 Sold again for - $750,000 on 1-28-2005 Sold again for - $1,341,000 on 7-18-2005 Sold again for - $350,000 on 8-7-2012 LOT 2: Originally sold for - $1,072,000 on 10-5-2001 Sold again for - $1,820,000 on 5-10-2005 (Flipped via double escrow for $580k profit) Sold again for - $2,400,000 on 5-10-2005 Sold again for - $4,280,000 on 6-26-2006 One client bought 40 acres in 1980 for $250,000. They put cattle on the property so that they would only have to pay minimal agricultural property taxes. On 10-09-2015, I sold the property for $5,100,000. I have a client I represented as a buyer’s agent for 11 acres in the attractions area. In less then a year, we have 5 acres of the 11 acres under contract for the price the buyer paid for the entire 11 acres. I have another client who bought 180 acres in 2007 for almost $2,000,0000. That property is worth somewhere between $10,000,000 $15,000,000 today. Land has turned many property owners into very wealthy individuals. However, for as many amazing successful land deals that I can show you via public records, I can show you just as many ugly stories that have brought investors to their knees. Please take this warning seriously. Do not try to invest in land or any real estate without the help of a competent Real Estate professional who can show you a successful book of business with verifiable transactions. If your agent is not willing to show you this, Run Forrest Run! For more information on any of these deals, please contact me at hooman@MastersRealty.com or 407-985-4621

Civil forfeiture, also known as ‘policing for profit,’ has received widespread criticism because of police seizing assets including cash and vehicles belonging to citizens who were never charged with a crime or even arrested. An example of such police practices was discussed by Justice Thomas in an opinion issued on March 6, 2017. A Texas police officer made a traffic stop on a ‘known drug corridor’ which is police speak for any highway between major cities. Police found no illegal drugs or other contraband in the car, however, they did discover $201,100 cash and a bill of sale for a home in Pennsylvania. The police seized the money for civil forfeiture. The driver of the car related that the money belonged to his mother and was the proceeds of a sale of the home in Pennsylvania. The driver’s mother filed a claim for the money, however, the Texas courts held that the forfeiture was justified because the State proved by a preponderance of the evidence (the lowest standard of proof in the justice system) that the money was either the proceeds of a drug sale or intended to be used in such a sale.   Examples of abuse pointed out by Justice Thomas included a town in Texas which routinely seized property of out-of-town drivers passing through the town. Police, in collaboration with the district attorney, would coerce drivers into giving up their property. In one example, the officials threatened to file unsubstantiated felony charges against a Latino driver and his girlfriend and to place the children in foster care unless they signed over the property that the authorities wanted to forfeit. In another example, cited by Justice Thomas, the authorities seized a plant worker’s car and all his property including cash he planned to use for dental work. He was jailed for a night, forced to sign away his property, and then released on the side of the road without a phone or money.   Justice Thomas wrote that the historic use

of civil forfeiture was limited principally to objects used in violation of customs and revenue laws and resulted in the forfeiture of ships and cargoes. He noted “I am skeptical that this historic practice is capable of sustaining, as a constitutional matter, the contours of modern practice, for two reasons.” First, historic civil forfeitures were narrower in most respects than its modern usage. Second, treating forfeitures as civil rather than criminal carries important implications for protections such as the right to trial by jury and the proper standard of proof. The opinion by Justice Thomas sends a signal that he is concerned about the abuses and constitutionality of current civil forfeiture practices. The Supreme Court did not consider the issue because it had not been properly raised and therefore, not preserved for review. All should be concerned about current civil forfeiture police practices. The abuse of civil forfeiture can impact even law-abiding citizens.  For example, travelers taking cash through TSA check points at any airport can be pulled for questioning causing them to miss their flight and have their money seized. Cash seizures at airports have ranged from tens of thousands of dollars to as little as $500.  The abuse of citizens by taking their property under the guise of civil forfeiture continues. The problem is not only with federal law enforcement but also state law enforcement, as well. While Florida has modified its civil forfeiture laws, major areas of abuse still exist. It is time to repeal all civil forfeiture laws and allow forfeiture only in criminal cases thereby preserving important constitutional safeguards to protect people against policing for profit.

DOG-FRIENDLY

Hotels

By Melanie Silva

If you and your family are planning to take your dog on vacation, you’ll need to find a pet-friendly hotel. Last year, more than 15 million Americans traveled with their pets. Many hotel chains are starting to notice this rising trend and are responding accordingly. Some lucky dogs not only go on vacation, but they also get in-room massages, their own seasonal room service menu, and a welcome gift that they can chew on. Check out a few of our favorite pet-friendly hotel chains that welcome your dog. THE RITZ CARLTON The Ritz Carlton’s pet-friendly locations know how to pamper your pooch. Their Washington, D.C. location offers plush dog beds, dog bowls, and all-natural treats. They do charge a per night fee and a $250 USD non-refundable dog cleaning fee. Dogs less than 20 pounds are welcome and require advance registration. Your pet cannot be left unattended within the guestroom, and they must be fully trained and appropriately restrained at all times. The Ritz-Carlton also provides an extensive room service menu with three delicious choices for dessert—including liver “kisses.” For registration as well as a copy of the resort pet policy, contact the resort concierge. FOUR SEASONS HOTELS & RESORTS Are you and your pet looking for a lavish stay? If so, look no further than the luxurious Four Season hotel. Not all Four Seasons hotels and resorts accept pets, but those that do offer an experience your pet will never forget. The upscale brand offers small dogs and cats in-room

amenities like beds, water bowls, and piddle pads. Concierges at petfriendly locations also have plenty of helpful tips about local dog parks and additional pet-friendly activities. Most have weight restrictions of 15 to 25 pounds and they normally don’t charge extra for your fur friend. Additional pets may be permitted with prior approval from the management. W HOTELS This luxury hotel pulls out all the stops for both human and pet guests. Their P.A.W. (Pets Are Welcome) Program offers guests a welcome packet with toys, treats, a specialized W Hotels pet tag, clean-up bags, and a list of available pet services. Pet-friendly rooms feature a custom pet bed, food and water bowls, and turndown treats. The room rate with a pet will include an additional fee above the room charge plus a nonrefundable cleaning fee. W Hotels allow one pet per room at no more than 40 pounds. However, dogs exceeding the weight limit and pets other than dogs may be accepted into the hotel at the Hotel Management’s discretion. As always, be sure to check your hotel’s pet policy before heading out on your family vacation. If one of these pet-friendly hotel chains isn’t available at your destination, simply call around to the independent hotels in the area and ask about their pet policy. Just make sure you have a plan in place before you leave home.

Guide to being the perfect

BRIDESMAID So, you’ve been asked to be your friend or sister’s bridesmaid. You’re excited and ready to get to work. But planning a wedding--and everything that comes before and after--is a lot of work and even more stress. Becoming a bridesmaid is as much a part-time job as it is an honor. As one of the bride’s go-to people, you must know how and when to help and when you should get out of the way. We’ve created a perfect set of guidelines so you’ll be ready to do your part in creating a dream wedding experience.

PRE-WEDDING DAY EXPECTATIONS Always be willing to volunteer. Contact the bride regularly and ask how you can be of service. If she’s reluctant to ask for help, have some ideas ready. By offering to help early on, you can show the bride you’re there for her without getting stuck with expensive or inconvenient obligations. Offer to help choose the bridesmaid dresses. This makes it more likely you’ll end up in something you don’t hate. Just remember that the final decision belongs to the bride. So, even if you hate the dress, you must wear it happily and graciously for a few hours. Be willing to assist the other bridesmaids and the maid of honor with anything that comes up. If someone else is spearheading the bridal shower or bachelorette party, but tasks are piling up, step up and help. Come up with fun ideas for those events and then help implement them. These events should be a source of fun and celebration to ease the stresses of wedding planning. Attend any pre-wedding events such as the bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, etc. It is very important the bride feels supported during this stressful time. This is also an excellent way to bond with the other bridesmaids. You may even make new lifelong friends.

By Samara Halperin

Listen and be patient, no matter how much complaining occurs. No wedding takes place with zero flaws, so when those obstacles happen, the bride is going to need to vent. Make sure the bride knows you are always available, and step in when she seems overwhelmed dealing with vendors or decisions about floral arrangements. Chip in financially where you can. In many cases, the bridesmaids pay for the bridal shower, but there are other ways you can help financially that will allow you to feel more included and relieve some of the bride’s stress.

YOUR JOB FOR THE BIG DAY On the morning of the wedding, offer to take care of any last minute errands. This will allow the bride to remain calm and focused on her wedding day. Keep dancing! Make sure the reception remains lively, deal with issues as soon as they arise, and socialize with guests to ensure they are having a blast. Offer to give the maid of honor a break throughout the reception by holding the bride’s gown train and making sure everything’s running smoothly. Set up your own means of transportation to and from the wedding. Don’t rely on the bride or other bridesmaids to provide transportation for you. Everyone has a million things on their mind that day, so make sure you find a way to get home at the end of the night. Take a million pictures. You’ll want to remember this day forever, and the bride and groom will appreciate any photos you take during the reception. Also, take photos of the shower, dinners, and salon visits and put them into a keepsake album for the bride and other bridesmaids.

Keeping an Eye on PIP in Florida Florida is one of two states in the country that has

mandatory personal injury protection, or “PIP,” which is a supplemental form of insurance that applies to injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. All registered vehicles in the state of Florida must carry a minimum of $10,000 in PIP coverage. This mandatory requirement is referred to as Florida’s “No Fault” system, because the injured policyholder’s own medical bills are covered regardless of who was at fault. The PIP law was designed to pay for medical bills of the injured party in a quick, efficient manner, therefore bypassing the timely analysis of fault to determine who will be financially responsible. At the time of this article, the Florida legislature has before it several bills that propose to repeal Florida’s “No Fault” auto insurance law. SB 1766 and HB 1063 propose to eliminate the mandatory PIP requirement and replace it with a mandatory

bodily injury coverage. A large majority of auto policyholders already have bodily injury coverage, and medical insurance often covers healthcare costs of injured parties, so PIP is viewed as redundant and contributing to higher premiums. A major concern is ensuring that drivers without medical insurance will remain protected through some form of coverage that will allow for emergency treatment. This concern prompted language in SB 1766 that includes a “medical payments” requirement of $5,000, essentially invalidating the savings on premiums in the event of elimination of the mandatory PIP requirement. And for Floridians, savings on insurance premiums is material: Floridians pay some of the highest auto insurance premiums in the country for the least amount of coverage.

IN THE KNOW

So what would a repeal of mandatory PIP mean for Florida’s registered drivers? It could mean lower premiums, but there may exist a gap for medical treatment for those who do not carry health insurance. As the intricacies of health insurance continue to fluctuate, it is important to view both insurance and auto policies as cohesive plans that should work together. Given the House and the Senate have competing bills that—in large part—aim to repeal PIP, a change on the auto insurance front is likely in the near future. Stay informed, call your insurance company and ask the hard questions to ensure you are, and will continue to be, protected.

DR. WENDI WARDLAW “Working a Ministry in Dentistry” As I thought on this title “Women who make a difference,” I first wanted to thank God for allowing me to be a usable vessel. It is only through the power God gives that I can serve to make a difference. As a mentor, recently a young lady asked me how she could “make a difference in this world.” My response was, “Take YOUR next step.” I told her a little about my journey to encourage her and I pray that it will also encourage you. As private Wendi Wardlaw, I enlisted the lowest ranking soldier in the US Army, seeking opportunity and to finish college. In the Army Dental Corps, we began the day at 4:30am for physical training (PT) and finished from 5-6pm, assuming nothing additional was required. Throughout my 10 years of active duty, I attended undergraduate evening classes. Yes, 10 years is a very long time if you compare it to most who complete an undergraduate in 4. Evening classes began at 77:30 and ended 9:30-10:00pm. As I look back now, I realize that today would still be a day, whether I invested 10 years, 4 years or no years. The answer to making a difference is in your next step. If I looked at the big picture I would’ve been discouraged, but because I focused on my next step, I arrived and whether I’m late is up for debate LOL. Stop looking at your mountain and focus on your next step. “All of your steps count.” While serving in the Army Dental Corps, God was growing the tools I would certainly need today as a missionary and dental practice owner. Having worked in all sides of dentistry, the assistant, the hygienist, the office manager and now the dentist. I served as an operating room technician, EMT and trained in emergency field medicine. God was preparing the missionary and growing my passion for dentistry. God gives us passions in our gifts so if you are looking for your destiny, look for your gifts. Inside your gifts, you will find your passions and taking your next step in your passions is how you find your destiny. These steps allowed me to survive the 2008 recession as a startup business and has formed the different layers of Dr. Wendi Wardlaw that exist today. Remember all your steps, the good and the bad, “All of your steps count!” There was only 1 month between 10 years in the Army and a full time dental student at the prestigious Howard University College of Dentistry. Calling the cafeteria, a “mess hall” more times than I wanted, the transition was challenging but I was taking my next step. After 2 years of externship at Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, I continued to post graduate completing my Advance Education in General and Cosmetic Dentistry with a focus on accessing the underserved for care. I moved to Florida and opened Stoneybrook Dental that specializes in CARE with state-of-the-art dentistry like CEREC one-visit Ceramic crowns. I structured my nonprofit, Inspired Purpose, Inc; the vehicle God allows me to serve through in greater Orlando and abroad. Today I am a dentist, an entrepreneur and business owner of a top rated dental practice, Stoneybrook Dental. A missionary with a nonprofit, Inspired Purpose, Inc. serving in Albania, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria, South Africa to start. I am DrWendiDDS, 6 days a week on the syndicated, Liz Black Show with “A Healthy Mouth is a Healthy You.” This segment reaches 35 cities and in over 100 countries around the world. I am a mentor, a teacher and certified speaker and life coach.

WOMEN WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Special Promotional Feature

Where is your next step you may ask…I promise you, you know. So far in 2017, Inspired Purpose/Stoneybrook Dental has served on mission in Chantal, Haiti. In Chantal like most of Haiti’s southern cities, the need is so great being hit by both the earthquake and the hurricane. We have also supported, One race; Human race: Feed 200 homeless, free dental days and local heath fairs. My next step, I am honored to soon be joining the faculty at Howard University College of Dentistry. I am excited to help the next generation of servant leaders learn, develop and grow into compassionate practitioners working in excellence. Inspired Purpose is preparing for our 2nd Annual Missions Benefit Concert. Everyone can’t go abroad but everyone can help. Please help us help others at Inspired Purpose.Org and support missions at home and abroad. Inspired Purpose will be headed to Ghana, Africa on a dental missionary trip Aug 2017. We hope to bring several Dental students with us and will be serving in many schools, orphanages and clinics. Where is your next step you may ask…I promise you, you know. You may not know how to cross your mountain but you do know how to take your next step. Look in your gifts, there you will find your passions and your next step, take it right there.

Dana Hall-Bradley By Sandy Harper

You can tell from the smile on her face that Dana Hall-Bradley likes to incorporate fun in everything she does! As she mentions at the beginning of her southern-themed book Works Hard — Plays Harder, “If things get any better, I may have to hire someone to help me enjoy it!” She wrote Works Hard — Plays Harder to teach others how to be successful in the real estate business, while enjoying a happy life. In addition to the Realtors around the world who’ve learned from her book, Dana is grateful for the opportunity to provide one-on-one mentoring to the agents in her own real estate office — Better Homes & Gardens Fine Living Real Estate in Celebration, Florida. Not only does she give them business advice, she also plans fun events to help them live a joyful life. Her book is one of the many ways Dana strives to make a positive difference in life. She also gives to various charitable organizations. As a twenty-year resident of Celebration, she feels it’s an honor to support organizations and businesses within her community. She proudly sponsors/ supports the Celebration Athletic Foundation, the Celebration High School PTSA, the Celebration Storm Cheer Squad, and the local Cub Scout’s efforts to support the military. In the greater Orlando area, Dana has been an avid supporter of Bridges of Light Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities. For several years, Dana organized a charity event she founded, Diamond, Denim, and Dice, which raised thousands of dollars for RMHC while providing a night of fun for locals. Now, she volunteers at the newest Ronald McDonald House, located at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Lake Nona — a decision that was easy to make after attending their Grand Opening Event in August of 2016. The southern quote that precedes the chapter on charitable giving in Works Hard — Plays Harder is “Why should God give you something better if you won’t take care of what ya got?” As Dana looks towards the future, with her new granddaughter in her arms, she is more determined than ever to make a difference. She is driven to take good care of this new, precious gift that God has given her family. One of the ways she will do that is by instilling a love of helping others, and making them smile, in this precious baby… who has already brought so much joy into her Gammy’s life.

Bette Lord Hillman “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” What impression are you making about your organization, your corporation, or you? Impression management can influence perception and suggests that success can come through self packaging. No one knows it better than Professional Image Consultant Bette Lord Hillman who works with leaders in all industries as a wardrobe and beauty consultant. “As we enhance our image on line, on social media, have we taken the step to enhance our personal self packaging image?” Hillman asserts that image impression management influences perception and suggests that your success can improve through personal branding and self packaging. Perception can become reality. Are you perceived as trustworthy and on the cutting edge of your industry? Do you have a signature style? Does it need an update? A great personal brand and signature style helps you be yourself and stand out from the crowd. Hillman works confidentially with leaders to give them the statistical edge they need or want to carve out their professional niche. Whether you are creating your public image for your organization, your company, or you, Hillman can offer valuable support to add to your confidence and impact. Perhaps you have a strong professional image brand and are satisfied with your impression. How do you sustain that level when you go to a wedding or special social occasion? In Florida, we have regional issues regarding temperature. How do you sustain a leadership image in the heat or during the summer months when you are challenged by regional issues? Simon Sinek of Delta Protective Services recently sited through Harvard research that our current generation has the lowest self esteem of any previous generations. Hillman recognizes that a great first impression and personal brand can improve self esteem and confidence. With confidence we can experience more job fulfillment and satisfaction. Updating and refining our personal brand can open new doors of opportunity. In addition to working as a wardrobe and beauty consultant, Bette is a Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics, an Executive Director for WOAMTEC, and a Beauty Prep Consultant with Dr. Marv Broderick of Perfect Portraits. Dr. Tejumade St. Matthew-Daniel All About Beautiful Smiles Creating the All About Beautiful Smiles Experience I chose our tag line, “a delightful dental experience,” because it’s audacious and it holds us accountable to patients who are anxious about seeing a dentist. From that first phone call until you walk out our door following your anxiety-free appointment, we’re going to make sure you have a beautiful smile, inside and out.

FORE Minutes in My Office We have a four-minute rule. That’s FORE! Before we do anything, we ask questions and then we listen. We have learnt that each person comes with their owner’s manual and in being present with each patient we get a roadmap on their dental needs, their smile desires and ultimately the way they like to be treated. This potentiates the excellent dental care we give and the patient leaves feeling heard, valued and well taken care of.

A Lifelong Learner I knew as a young child that I wanted to be a dentist, but not just any dentist. I wanted to practice at the highest level. So I left my homeland in Lagos, Nigeria to move to the United States and study at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. Excellence is not an accident. I work at it, continuing my education every year, learning and mastering the art and science of sedation dentistry, implant dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry from the best in the world. Most recently, I earned a mastership from the International Congress of Oral Implantology, something only five percent of dentists worldwide receive.

Embracing Community I like to say we are blessed to be a blessing. Every year, We host a free dental care day, supported by other dental professionals in the area. During the last one, we saw 133 patients. We made it more than just a trip to the dentist. We made it an occasion. Local restaurants and businesses donated food, water, and drinks. I wanted to create not only a day where people who could not afford a dentist could get great care, but also a day that inspired them to go out and do something for their community.

My Passions I train for triathlons with my husband, Dr Banji Awosika who is a nephrologist with a focus on wellness. I’m a foodie who loves going to farmers’ markets with our three children. My faith in Jesus Christ is central to my life.

The Power of Wow I’ve learned from Disney, Zappos, Apple, Four Seasons, and other companies the power of core values for my practice. We deliver “wow” through service. We do common things uncommonly so we can achieve great clinical outcomes. I get such joy and fulfillment when patients say: “I can’t believe this is a dental office.” Recently, I completed a bridge of nine implants for a 79-yearold patient, who started to cry tears of joy during our last session. I realized this is why I am a dentist. This is why I invest my time, my heart, and my faith in creating beautiful smiles that go soul deep. ORLANDO!

These have been challenging times for Orlando,

with the Pulse Tragedy sending shock waves through our community almost a year ago. It is remarkable to note however, the love and support and the way our community rose to this heartbreaking occasion. Within mere hours of the shooting, I witnessed hundreds of people from every walk of life jump into action to volunteer. I saw our first responders, local leaders and businesses demonstrate stellar leadership skills. I saw hundreds stand in-line to donate blood, hundreds came out to bring meals to the victims and volunteers and hundreds more came out to show support to our community in any way possible, for that I thank each and every one of you. This is just part of what makes this city so special. We are so blessed to be a part of such a strong community and we are proud to be part of Orlando UNITED.
