I’m 85 years young with 14 grandchildren and like to keep busy. After struggling with fatigue and fainting spells, I was diagnosed with a faulty heart valve. The doctors at Orlando Health corrected the problem through a minimally invasive procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). LAY O W

IN THE HISTORIC HIGH COUNTRY at the Barnsley Resort Country roads, take me home…to the Barnsely Resort! Okay, so there’s a little twist on John Denver’s version, but it’s just as true and there’s no song that can explain the one-of-a-kind experience at the Barnsley Resort.

By Dana Damato

It’s been said that some of the most memorable destinations are hidden gems, and the Barnsley Resort is undeniably one of them. Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just an hour north of Atlanta is not just a beautiful resort, but a historic estate and a one-of-a-kind sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts. I’ve always been fond of the great outdoors, but I’ve never experienced a destination that encourages both luxurious southern comfort and getting (a lot) of dust and mud on your boots. It’s the perfect duo and truly a unique experience for all who are looking for an adventure. When I think back of the Barnsley Resort, I can only think that the property was nothing less than something out of a storybook. This 1840s estate is a destination that anyone can appreciate. Visitors have access to 3,000 acres of recreational choices such as a world-class Jim Fazio-designed golf course, Beretta Shooting Grounds that includes a sporting clays course, bird hunting, and horseback riding along picturesque trails. The best part of the resort are the awe-inspiring ruins from the original manor built by Godfrey Barnsley for his wife, Julia, which tower over the resort’s legendary gardens. With authentic, locally sourced cuisine, a boutique spa, and unparalleled Southern charm, Barnsley Resort offers an escape that’s just what you’d expect Georgia to be, and so much more. With the completion of the new Inn at Barnsley Resort, the property now has a total of 150 guest rooms and suites When it comes to finding the perfect destination to visit, whether it’s a getaway for your family or simply a place to travel to solo, the Barnsley Resort accommodates the needs of any occasion. My experience was a little more on the wild side and I left with not only incredible memories, but with an adequate amount of knowledge in both hunting quail and how to properly aim at a clay disk while clay shooting. The best part is that these resources are available to anyone who is looking for an adventure – no experience required! Aaaah – the great outdoors. One would argue that the outdoor adventures at the Barnsley Resort could be the main event – I might have to agree. I do enjoy shooting guns, and the this is just the place for a gun enthusiast to pull the trigger. Whether you’re a sharp shooter or a beginner, there’s a place for you here. Take a shot at the 28-station clays course (or covered five-stand) to test your aim. Not only is this is one of the top sporting clay facilities in the Southeast, but it’s also Beretta’s official shooting grounds. It’s simple to spend a few hours out on the course. All you have to do it schedule your shotgun fitting and private instruction. You’ll be yelling, “Pull!” like a pro! A little further out is where you’ll find the 1800 acres of rolling hills and flat lands. Hunters can load up into one of the custom-built Jeeps with a personal guide and world-class hunting pups for a bucket list-worthy dove, quail, pheasant or turkey hunt, in season. If you’re looking for something a little slower pace but just as exciting and beautiful, then go ahead and strap on your chaps and spurs (if you want to, of course) for a guided horseback ride through the wilderness. Amp up the ride with a romantic

home-cooked Southern fare. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers Southern regional comfort food that’s delicious any time of the day, plus an extensive wine, craft beer and spirit list.

There are so many activities that you just won’t know what to do first! Other outdoor adventures includes golf. Set your tee time at the resort’s 18hole Jim Fazio-designed course, recognized as some of the fastest greens in the Southeast and offering one of the best collections of par 3s in all of golf. The course was recently upgraded to Champion Bermuda greens for a more consistent putting surface year-round. If you’re looking to learn a few techniques, but never had the chance? Head to the new Golf School, offering drop-in clinics, private instruction from PGA Professionals and retired players, utilizing top of the line Trackman Technology. Guests can enjoy custom club-fitting, with brands including TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway, Ping and PXG - making Barnsley Resort one of the only green grass facilities in North Georgia to offer this.

On the other side of the property, the Rice House, which was originally the home of the Rice Family in nearby Rome, Georgia, was delicately relocated to Barnsley Resort. The culinary team pays respect to its Southern roots and serves modern farmhouse cuisine, with a menu that changes every other week. For a meal on the go and an ice-cold beer, The Beer Garden is a great spot to gather under the stars. Open throughout the day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the Beer Garden offers a casual menu featuring items from Atlanta’s Spotted Trotter Charcuterie that pair perfectly with over 30 craft beer selections. If the slow paced, soothing country scene is something you’re seeking for your next getaway, this is definitely the place for you. With authentic, locally sourced cuisine, a boutique spa, and Southern charm, Barnsley Resort offers an escape unlike anything else in the southeast. With the completion of the new Inn at Barnsley Resort, the property now has a total of 150 guest rooms and suites, making plenty room for more visitors.

You can also enjoy the nine-hole Disc Golf course and the Wolf Cave Mountain paintball field that are available for a little friendly competition. Discover the resort on foot or bike with the help of the shooting grounds’ trail map, with options that range from strenuous to easy levels. Active travelers will enjoy the fit trail, offering the opportunity to get in an outdoor workout. All this adventure makes me hungry, and there are plenty of fabulous restaurants right on the property! The Woodlands Grill is the place to indulge in 14

StantonSoBe WHERE LUXURY MEETS FUN & CELEBRITIES By Sven J. Bode

Not only is Miami one of Florida’s most coveted destinations, hundreds of celebrities call this exciting city home. Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, and Matt Damon are among the elite who have helped make south Florida’s iconic vacation spot as equally famous and fabulous as themselves. E! Network filmed “Kourtney & Khloé Take Miami” right next door to the Marriott Stanton South Beach… your number one choice for the most luxurious Miami getaway.

Nestled next to the beautiful Marjory Stoneman Douglas Ocean Beach Park, Miamibased Key International’s 224-room Marriott Stanton invites you to enjoy a stay worthy of the celebrity life—whether for just a romantic weekend escape or an extended spring break retreat. In 2015, Key International, owner of the Marriott Stanton South Beach, began a $22-million renovation to create what is now one of the most unforgettable Miami locales of unparalleled luxury. Stanton’s two-phase redesign transformed the boutique-style hotel into a Marriott International Inc. property with resort distinction, for those seeking an incomparable glimpse of South Florida.

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the brilliant New York-based architecture and design firm, spearheaded the Marriott Stanton’s renovation and brought the property a relaxing beach club atmosphere with midcentury décor that charmingly represents the Art Deco style of Miami.

beachfront living, beckoning you to explore the endless waters just steps outside. The shoreline meets sophistication in the ocean-inspired guestrooms, with spa-like bathrooms, private balconies opening to the ocean or the Miami skyline, and elegant décor that channels the soothing simplicity of the Atlantic in view.

Completed in January 2017, the first phase of the overhaul included upgrades to the hotel’s lobby, guestrooms and suites, and meeting rooms. The resort’s newly-designed 2,600 square feet of event space, including the oceanfront terrace and the resort’s ballroom, is the perfect picturesque location for weddings, executive meetings, or celebrations. This year, the Marriott Stanton unveiled the completion of the renovation’s second and third phases, which brought improvements to the property’s Starbucks, Azabu, Marriot’s Japanese restaurant, the spa, and the fitness center, even incorporating specialty training such as functional fitness, movement specialists, and yoga classes to the lifestyle center’s programs.

During your stay at one of the few resorts with direct beach access, you can begin your day by taking a walk on breathtaking South Beach and spend a few tranquil hours in a beach cabana, or make those hours exhilarating with the resort’s selection of watersports.

This majestic oasis on Ocean Drive is where chic, South Beach glamour within the heart of stylish Miami meets the splendor of the sea. Classic and modern natural hues and earthy textures fill the atmosphere of the Stanton’s warm lobby with the calming echoes of

Bask in the sun at the Marriott’s two outdoor infinity pools, or treat yourself to an invigorating spa treatment, such as a marine algae facial or a hot seashell therapy. Enjoy the ultimate relaxation of the spa’s collection of unique massages, facials, scrubs, and wrap treatments as you unwind your senses. The Stanton’s Azabu, the Miami Beach location of New York’s famed Azabu sushi restaurant, boasts an innovative Japanese dining experience. Chefs Masatsugu (Masa) Kubo and Kenichi (Ken) Fujimoto combine quality ingredients and eye-catching presentation to fashion unique twists on Japanese classics. The restaurant features various dining concepts, including a fullservice dining room and The Den, Azabu’s secluded sushi bar. In the Den, Tokyo-trained chefs serve sushi crafted with local and imported seafood, delivered fresh from Japanese fish markets. At Azabu, guests participate in an Izakaya dining style, ordering a tableful of sharable dishes, such as Robatagrilled Yakitori, Japanese fried rice, Udon, and other traditional Asian eats. For dessert, Azabu’s signature choice is the Japanese Raindrop Cake, a jelly made with Pearl Agar and water, served with kinako dried soy beans and Japanese brown sugar syrup. You can also enjoy a cocktail at Bar Azabu, which offers over 40 imported whiskies and sakes. The subtle, understated décor of natural elements and the quiet ambience of Azabu create the opportune place for a peaceful evening after a long day at the beach.

The Marriott’s exclusive location in SoFi—“South of Fifth”—provides guests with convenient access to the wonders of Miami’s shopping, dining, and nightlife experiences, as well as all the quintessential sights and sounds that make the sensational city the unique haven it has become. If you’re looking for a true taste of the best bites of Miami outside of the Marriott Stanton, you’ll want to include Miami Culinary Tours in your vacation plans. Discover the most scrumptious, one-of-a-kind, and renowned dishes without the hassle of scrolling through food blogs and website recommendations. Enter a journey through Miami’s culinary landscape, tasting foods from the most established chefs and some of the city’s hidden gems. From beef empanadas and Cubano sandwiches at Cuban cafes like El Pub Restaurant or Old Havana Restaurant to a mojito at Ball and Chain, you are sure to get your fix of Latin flavors. Cool down with a watermelon juice at Los Pinareños Fruteria, or end your adventure with a guava pastelito at Yisell Bakery or an Abuela Maria Ice Cream at Azucar Ice Cream. This culinary tour is the best way to see the city and enjoy every delectable moment along the way! For an upscale night out, venture to Red the Steakhouse, where the finest wines are paired with signature steaks. With an elegant atmosphere and a fiery menu reflected in the restaurant’s name, Red sets the scene for an exciting evening of fine dining. Delicious cuts like Filet Mignon and NY Strip are perfectly paired with starters such as Lemon Garlic Shrimp and classic sides, including Four Cheese Macaroni & Cheese. If you decide to take a nighttime stroll through South of Fifth and are in the mood for a drink, South Pointe Tavern is the place to be. As Miami’s Favorite Local Bar, South Pointe Tavern features the largest variety of spirits in Miami Beach and showcases seasonally curated cocktails like Old Fashioned, Negronis, Whiskey Bucks, and Margaritas. Be sure to try the Monkey Jacket, one of the

Tavern’s signature drinks, a cheeky combination of white rum, J. Wray and Nephew Overproof, banana allspice syrup, lime and pineapple juices, and tiki bitters. Stay for a snack and try some of the menu’s artisanal small plates, including ceviche, flatbreads, salads, and sandwiches. This bar is sure to make you feel right at home in Miami with its bistro-style atmosphere and nautical aesthetic. In the creative and cultural Wynwood District, you’ll find Sette Ostera, meaing “Lucky Tavern” in Italian. Sette Ostera is home to tantalizing, aromatic Italian dishes from a variety of pizzas to pastas made in-house. Eat, drink, and relax with friends and loved ones as you savor the sophistication of Italian culture, or stop by for Sette Ostera’s signature weekend brunch. BRINGING LIFE & PERSONALITY Morrone Interiors and Chapel & Cellar Hannibal Square are proud to announce the completion of the Hudson’s Cellar Hannibal Square project. By Vikki Bisbee

Hudson’s Cellar is part of what was originally named Grant’s Chapel, built in 1935 and operated as an African Methodist Episcopal church until 2001. The cellar was added to the building in 2013 and Morrone Interiors was brought in for the project in 2017, taking on the task of bringing life and personality to the basement that matched the history of the chapel. Following the front staircase down will lead you to one of two hand-forged iron doors imported from Mexico. Upon entering the space, you will notice black stained concrete floors, oak tongue and groove ceilings and Edison light fixtures throughout that add a warm glow to the space. In the center of the room, two antique Chicago brick pillars anchor a live edge table, which creates a great communal seating area

for large groups. Lining the walls of the room are tufted leather banquette benches and six live edge tables that make for a more intimate seating option. Mr. Backwards Forwards

Duane Michals: The Portraitist presents the first comprehensive overview of inventive portraits by this influential photographer who, in the 1960s, broke away from established traditions of documentary and fine-art photography and is still creating original work today.

Spanning Michals’ 60-year career, the exhibition features more than 125 portraits, many of which are black-and-white photographs recently rediscovered by the artist in his New York City apartment. The exhibition highlights the artist’s stylistically varied body of work through portraits that demonstrate his expansive toolkit — sequenced images, multiple exposures, reflections, uncommon vantage points, collage, hand-painting, and other techniques. On his images he often adds handwritten annotations that convey a contemplative tone.

Michals photographed numerous artists, actors, musicians, writers, and other public figures, as diverse as Leonard Cohen, Yayoi Kusama, Meryl Streep, Maya Angelou, Robert De Niro, Rene Magritte, Marcel Duchamp, Andy Warhol, Stephen King, Madonna, Liza Minnelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Sting, Tennessee Williams, the original cast of Saturday Night Live, and many more, shown together for the first time in this exhibition. Born in 1932 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Michals earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Denver in 1953, then spent two years in the Army followed by studies at Parsons School of Design in New York City. His earliest major solo museum exhibitions were at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1968 and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1970. Since then, he has had numerous solo shows, including at the Odakyu Museum, Tokyo (1999), the International Center of Photography, New York (2005), the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Greece (2008), and the Scavi Scaligeri in Verona, Italy (2008). His work is located in numerous permanent collections in the U.S. and around the world. Michals lives in New York City.

“I think photographs should be provocative and not tell you what you already know. It takes no great powers or magic to reproduce somebody’s face in a photograph. The magic is in seeing people in new ways.” —DUANE MICHALS

SHINES AT DIAMOND RESORTS’ EXCLUSIVE CONCERT SERIES

Diamond Resorts Live By Courtney Caggiano

As part of the Diamond Resorts Live concert series, country artist and songwriter Lee Ann Womack shared an intimate performance at House of Blues Orlando on December 4. Accompanied by a mere two instrumentalists, Womack mesmerized with her haunting, bluesy voice that danced effortlessly over warm guitar and mandolin. The singer, who was recently awarded the honorable ASCAP Golden Note Award, shared songs from her latest album, The Lonely, the Lonesome & the Gone, as well as some of her classic hits, such as “Never Again, Again,” and “I Hope You Dance,” the emotive, moving number that defined Womack’s career. In her usual mysterious style, Womack shone the brightest in one of the night’s darker moments, a chilling rendition of Lefty Frizzell’s “Long Black Veil.” An uncommon track for

AUDI SERVES UP SOME FRESH FUTURE

AUDI P18 E-TRON SUPERCAR CONFIRMED FOR LIMITED PRODUCTION

34

| STYLETOME.COM

TOYS

The stunning Audi PB18 e-tron concept, which made its debut at Monterey Car Week in 2018, is getting the green light. Audi Global CEO, Bram Schot, in an interview with Autoweek Netherlands, said the allelectric supercar should show up sometime in the next year or two, though, just 50 examples will make their way to production. FOR RACE TRACK AND ROAD In the Audi PB18 e-tron, the driver is the one steering and stepping on the gas or brake pedal. There are therefore no complex systems for piloted driving on board and no comfort features to add weight. In their place are a driver’s seat and cockpit that are integrated into an inner monocoque shell that can be slid laterally. When driven solo, the monocoque can be positioned in the center of the interior as in a monoposto – the perfect location for the racetrack. This is made possible not least by the by-wire design of the steering and pedals; a mechanical connection of the control elements is not needed.

In normal road traffic, the driver can limit the maximum speed in favor of range. This limitation is easy to deactivate on the racetrack and can be adapted to local conditions. The focus is on not just powerful performance but also maximum efficiency. While being driven, the Audi PB18 e-tron recovers large amounts of energy: up to moderate braking, the electric motors are solely responsible for decelerating the vehicle. The hydraulic brakes only come into play for heavy braking. The liquid-cooled solid-state battery has an energy capacity of 95 kWh. A full charge provides for a range of over 500 kilometers (310.7 miles) in the WLTP cycle. The Audi PB18 e-tron is already designed for charging with a voltage of 800 volts. This means the battery can be fully recharged in about 15 minutes. Ladies and gentlemen, the future has arrived.

Gael Buzyn is Head of the Audi Design Loft in Malibu – where the Audi PB18 e-tron was born. He describes the most important item in the specifications: “We want to offer the driver an experience that is otherwise available only in a racing car like the Audi R18. That’s why we developed the interior around the ideal driver’s position in the center. Nevertheless, our aim was to also give the PB18 e-tron a high degree of everyday usability, not just for the driver, but also for a potential passenger.” THREE ELECTRIC MOTORS AND QUATTRO DRIVE The concept uses three powerful electric motors – one up front and two in the rear. The latter are centrally located between the steering knuckles, each directly driving one wheel via half-shafts. They deliver power output of up to 150 kW to the front axle and 350 kW to the rear – the Audi PB18 e-tron is a true quattro, of course. Maximum output is 500 kW, with boosting, the driver can temporarily mobilize up to 570 kW. The combined torque of up to 830 newton meters (612.2 lb-ft) allows acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in scarcely more than 2 seconds – a speed that differs only marginally from that of a current LMP1 prototype.

BEST FRIENDS

EXOTIC BLOODLINE Astonishing Ashera By Smerelyn Gutierrez

Wealthy people buy expensive cars or even expensive bags to fulfill their spending urges. However, why buy bags and cars if you can buy something extremely out of the ordinary, like a cat? Cats are among the most popular pets in the world, and we as humans often find that there is no price when getting one of our own. For some people an average regular pet is just not enough for them; in fact, the rarer it is, the more people are willing to buy it. So why not an Ashera cat? The Ashera cats are becoming wealthy people’s favorite cat. “Why?” you may ask. Well, they are seen as one of the rarest, largest and most expensive cats in the world. It has some exotic feline bloodline which also includes a domestic cat that will make it possible for you to have as a pet. This luxurious cat has become one of many popular breeds for those wealthy cat lovers. Many people are opting out from buying a regular house cat and switching over to the luxurious new cat that was created, yes I said created, with many other breeds. Lifestyle Pets created the hybrid cats for those who are normally are allergic to them and eventually created one of the rarest cats there is, which is said to only breed about 100 of the cats a year, with only about 50 cats being sold in the U.S. The only thing this cat damages is your wallet, which can retail up to $125,000. That makes it one of the world’s most expensive house cats available to the public. The Ashera cat is a type of cat that is a cross between an African Serval, an Asian Leopard and a domestic house cat. The cat can range up to 30 pounds and can grow to be around 4 feet long, which is considered to be the largest cat within the house cat line. This eye-catching cat has a more distinctive look than any other cat in the market. This cat has spots and stripes all around the body that can be said to resemble a leopard, however, these cats are amicable and still can be treated as a regular house cat. The Ashera cats are great temperament, love to be around children, and even enjoy being walked on a leash. So next time you consider getting a pet, why not get the rarest and most luxurious one of all to show off your worth?

THAT ONLY HAPPENS IN

LOVE

STORIES! The on-screen relationships that led to off-camera romances By Riesa Pascal

Workplace romances aren’t unheard of in the office so who’s to say it can’t happen in Hollywood? Here’s a list of actors whose on-set chemistry led to real life relationships and although many were fleeting, some blossomed into marriages that are still going strong today.

38

| STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Stephen Moyer & Anna Paquin

Johnny Galecki & Kaley Cuoco

Miley met Liam in 2009 when he starred as her love interest on the set of The Last Song. Though the couple broke up in 2013, they eventually got back together in 2016 and finally said “I do” this past December.

The supernatural thriller “True Blood” is responsible for getting these two co-stars together! Stephen met Anna in 2008 while starring as her vampire lover on the hit show. He decided to put a ring on it two years later in 2010 and the doting couple now have 6 year old twins together.

Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki of “Big Bang Theory” began dating off screen and were together for 2 years before deciding to go their separate ways. Despite the split, the couple remain good friends and ironically their onscreen characters are now married to one another. Johnny was even in attendance at Kaley’s real-life wedding to Karl Cook in June of last year.

Rose Leslie & Kit Harington

After meeting in 2012 on the set of HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones”, this couple’s on-screen love blossomed into a real-life relationship that led to them tying the knot in Scotland in June 2018. Freddie Prinze Jr. & Sarah Michelle Gellar

Freddie and Sarah are the longest lasting couple on the list having been together since they met in 1997 while filming I Know What You Did Last Summer. The couple got married in 2002 and share two children together. Ginnifer Goodwin & Josh Dallas

It doesn’t get more romantic than falling in love with a man who literally plays your Prince Charming, but that’s exactly what happened when these two met on the set of “Once Upon A Time”. The couple were married in 2014 and have been living happily ever after with their two children ever since.

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson

Stephen isn’t the only vampire to have fallen for his human love interest! Kristen and Robert met while filming Twilight in 2008 and were together until 2012 when Kristen was caught having a shocking affair with the married director of her film Snow White and the Huntsman. I guess you could say she fell in love on a movie set, twice!

Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt

Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan

Brad and Angelina fell in love while filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith though Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time. He went public with his romance four months after splitting from Jennifer and went on to have six children with Angelina during their 12 year relationship. In 2016, the couple announced they were separating and sadly have been going through an ugly divorce and custody battle ever since.

While co-starring with Jenna Dewan in the 2006 hit Step Up, Channing Tatum had no idea he had been cast alongside his future wife, but neither could deny that their chemistry on set needed further exploring. The couple dated and were married in 2009. They had one daughter together 4 years later, but sadly announced their separation in April 2018.

It’s often cited as the most romantic movie of all time so it should come as no surprise that the on-screen romance of The Notebook came to life off-screen as well! Rachel and Ryan fell for each other on set in 2004 and were together for 3 years before sadly breaking up in 2007.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

MICHAEL BUBLE LOVE By Courtney Caggiano

No one captures the feelings that love springs up within our hearts quite like Michael Buble, and on February 16th, Mr. Buble is bringing his unforgettable voice to Orlando’s Amway Center, for a not-to-be-missed tour just in time for the month of romance.

shared with his fans over Facebook. Love might not have the upbeat excitement of the singer’s previous albums, yet this recent collection of pensive tracks showcases an established, settled Buble finding his place in the consistency of classic sounds.

it could have been composed in decades past. On “Forever Now,” a song Buble says he never plans to perform live, the songwriter sings to his children with words from the heart of a devoted father that will bring tears to anyone’s eyes.

Although the man who so famously sets the warm emotions of a love story to sweet melody, Buble takes a more honest approach on his latest album, Love, in which the singer opens up about the challenges that love brings, as well as the healing power of song.

Perhaps the hardship has taught Buble to express the various seasons of love in more depth and detail—even Buble has dubbed Love his “most romantic album to date”—as his voice now carries a certain vulnerability that seems to take life a bit more seriously.

After a lengthy two-year absence, Buble has finally returned to the studio and the stage, a brighter moment after the storm of watching his four-year-old son, Noah, battle cancer. With new perspective, the Grammy-winning father views Love as a testament to the strength of hope—and especially the strength of his son, who he lovingly calls a “superhero.” Buble also wants this album to be a token of gratitude for those who have supported him through his difficult journey as he spent much-needed time with family.

Still, Buble has chosen to reenter the musical world with a sense of optimism, with the most timeless love songs and classic, feel-good favorites—but this time, they seem to mean something more. Buble proves the significance of love in its truest form, opening the album with “When I Fall in Love,” promising that “it will be forever,” a phrase that must now hold great value in Buble’s heart.

The album is just as full of joyful notes and colorful hues, such as the big band flair on tracks like “I Only Have Eyes for You,” and “Such a Night.” The always effervescent “La Vie en Rose” adds a spirited touch to the album as Buble takes a bubbly, cheerful approach to Edith Piaf ’s passionate international hit. Buble’s rich, eloquent timbre could rival the crooners of the Rat Pack, but his unique modernization shines through to provide the age-old American songbook with fresh life for a pop-centric audience.

“For me, this is a small way of being able to thank you and tell you how much I love you,” he

Among the American standards throughout the album, Buble includes a couple original tracks that seamlessly weave right into the classically modern collection. “Love You Anymore,” cowritten by pop singer Charlie Puth, sounds like

Love is an album of heart-rending, melodic snapshots, and Buble’s 2018 tour is sure to inspire the most love-struck, lovesick, and hopeless romantics to find the beauty in every moment of life’s ever-changing journey, and to enjoy the love songs along the way.

STAY GOLDEN

Why you want to add gold to your skin care routine.

Gold. A Chemical element you can find on the periodic table and nowadays, in your daily beauty products. Gold for many, many centuries has been a symbol of wealth, luxury, and glamour. And companies have started infusing this luxurious element in their beauty products. Apparently, gold has other benefits other than making you feel glamorous.

TACHA Gold Camellia Beauty Oil A multitasking beauty oil with 23-karat gold for face, hair, and body that adds instant nourishment and radiance to your skincare and makeup routine. $95 / Avaialable at Sephora.com

60

| STYLETOME.COM

Many brands and companies started adding gold to their products because of the many benefits gold has to the body specifically the skin! Gold helps with wrinkles, fine lines, and spots. Talk about every woman’s desire. Gold helps activate the basal cells of the skin which increases the elasticity of your skin and reduces wrinkles, fine lines, blemishes and marks on the skin. Gold also aids in stimulating your skin cells. The ions present in gold help stimulate the cells, nerves, and veins in your body. Which leads to improved blood circulation and in turn will leave you with healthy skin.

Dryness of the skin is another factor of bad skin. When your skin is dry it can cause premature aging. Using creams and/or lotions with gold in it can reduce dryness of the skin and helps in increasing the metabolic rate and will help prevent your skin from premature aging. The Egyptians believed that gold has medicinal properties that help with healing. Gold does have antioxidant properties, and like mentioned earlier, increases the blood circulation which helps to a reduction of acne and other skin problems. Gold does not only look good on you, whether it’s your nail color, the color of your shirt, or the jewelry you wear. But it has all the skin care benefits that give you beautiful, glowing, youthful looking skin. Time to put some gold into your skin care routine and experience all the benefits for yourself!

2019

THE DOCTORS OF THE YEAR.

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s No. 1 Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

DR. SHARON JAFFE Infertility Specialist | Center for Reproductive Medicine Endocrinology and Infertility at Columbia University. There she worked as director of the In Vitro Fertilization Center until Orlando Health recruited her to develop a resident education program for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Under her direction as resident educator, the standardized national scores in this field soared for her young doctors, with many becoming outstanding practicing physicians in Central Florida. In 1992, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Sarah. The following day she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While undergoing multiple surgical procedures and months of chemotherapy, she immediately became involved with local fundraising as part of the committee for Women Playing for Time. For many years she was an integral part of helping this organization raise millions of dollars to increase awareness and provide financial support in the fight against breast cancer. She has also participated at many other events to further help others transition from a breast cancer patient to a survivor. Since joining the Center for Reproductive Medicine (CRM) in 1997, Dr. Jaffe has combined her experience as a breast cancer survivor and her knowledge as a reproductive endocrinologist to develop a fertility preservation program for all men and women diagnosed with cancer. Patients are extremely grateful when she provides her experience and support, not only as a physician, but also as a successful previous patient. She understands both the medical and psychosocial importance of timely care: a patient diagnosed with cancer will be given an expedited appointment to discuss fertility preservation options and subsequently start the desired treatment. Providing education to others has always been important to Dr. Jaffe, the middle child of a college professor and a math teacher. As a student at The Johns Hopkins University, she found time to tutor others (in between her own studies and tennis team, achieving MVP and captain) and years later she was honored as Attending of the Year in Resident Education for expertise in teaching. As an Associate Professor at University of Central Florida School of Medicine, she volunteered on a committee to develop the reproductive and endocrine module for the School of Medicine where she was also awarded Outstanding Educator.

In 1991 Dr. Sharon Jaffe relocated to Central Florida, bringing with her compassion, knowledge, expertise and surgical skills to help couples conceive. After being graduated from The Johns Hopkins University, she moved to New York City for medical training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she remained to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. After serving as the Chief Resident she had fellowship training in Reproductive

In the early 1990s Dr. Jaffe enjoyed educating women nationwide as host of Ask the OBGYN on America’s Health Network, which had 6 million subscribers. She does admit that it was exciting on occasion being recognized in different areas of the country by members of her television audience and her television experience has provided her additional insight to educating her own patients individually. Education and research go hand-in-hand. Dr. Jaffe has been involved in research since freshman year in college. She has had many publications and presentations. She is proud that

she has continued clinical research in private practice, helping many families to have children that would not have been possible without financially funded in vitro fertilization. Dr. Jaffe is extremely proud to be part of CRM which has been providing patients with individualized fertility treatment options since 1985 and achieving some of the highest success rates attainable. CRM is known for providing compassionate patient care, customized treatment plans, and affordable pricing options to give patients every possible chance of success to conceive. In November 2017, the Center for Reproductive Medicine opened a brand new state of the art facility in Winter Park on Orlando Avenue. The doctors and staff at CRM are proud to provide a comfortable environment “Where dreams are conceived”. Whether helping to conceive Central Florida’s first IVF baby or preserving fertility via elective egg and sperm freezing, CRM has always been on the leading edge of technology and is part of an elite category of infertility clinics that are equipped with onsite embryology, laboratory and surgical facilities, providing patients with the highest quality of fertility care and convenience. In addition, CRM is a founding partner in My Egg Bank (MyEggBank.com), the world’s most successful egg freezing program with nearly 5000 successful deliveries. CRM physicians are

also consistently recognized as Orlando’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors as well as named to the U.S. News & World Report list of Top U.S. Reproductive Endocrinologists. Dr. Jaffe has received much additional recognition including America’s Top Doctor, Best Doctors in America, Patient’s Choice Award, Compassionate Doctor Award and On-Time Physician Award. Both Dr. Jaffe and her husband Lee can be frequently spotted around town supporting fundraising events throughout Central Florida. In 2007, Dr. Jaffe became an avid cyclist and along with a group of friends began participating in local and national cycling events raising funds for research and support of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, breast cancer, leukemia and lymphoma...just to name a few. Her favorite ride was with Young Survivor Coalition in Pennsylvania and Maryland, nearly 250 miles in 2.5 days. Dr. Jaffe is very proud that her daughter has continued in her footsteps with community volunteer involvement in St. Louis where she has participated in fundraising events and serves as a mentor for future high school engineers. This exemplifies the importance of a leader, leading by example.

most recently over 30,000 feet in the air, she performed CPR! The plane made an emergency landing. Thanks to Dr. Jaffe, the passenger from China lived! Dr. Sharon Jaffe always says she has the best job in the world. “Through over 25 years of taking care of patients, I still look forward to coming in every day and offering my best to every infertility patient referred to me. It is a privilege to help them build their family. I have experienced many exhilarating moments when I meet “my babies” years later when I am introduced to them as children, teenagers or adults on the streets of Central Florida. On numerous occasions a child or a teenager has said “thank you” after being introduced to as me the doctor who helped with their conception. PRICELESS.”

In the past couple years, Dr. Jaffe has on more than one occasion used her cardiac lifesaving knowledge and skills in public. She applied them once to save a fellow cyclist and

DR. DANELLE CHAMBERS The Surgical Group of Orlando For over 20 years, Danelle Chambers M.D. has been providing surgical care of the highest quality to patients in Central Florida. After completing residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center she joined The Surgical Group of Orlando, which is now made up of herself, Dr. Alberto Padron and Dr. Michael Freeland. Being part of a group has allowed Dr. Chambers to provide superior individualized patient care, unsurpassed service and unparalleled surgical excellence. Dr. Chambers and the entire staff at The Surgical Group of Orlando continually strive to improve patients’ satisfaction and successfully guide patients through their treatments. The traditional doctor-patient relationship is emphasized, and patients are treated as she herself would want to be treated. As part of this relationship, Dr. Chambers, or one of her partners is available to her patients—and to her referring physicians—twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. The Surgical Group of Orlando has surgeons in the office and operating room everyday of the week, offering office appointments quickly, and if surgery is required, to schedule surgery without any necessary delay. Dr. Chambers performs the majority of her surgeries in an outpatient setting, which allows her to provide the highest quality of surgical care in the most cost-effective setting. This is possible because she is an independent doctor—a doctor not employed by a large hospital but rather has her own individual group practice. The presence of independent doctors is an important factor in our nation’s ability to sustain affordable and high-quality care, as well as to preserve patient choice. She is able to utilize outpatient surgery centers to save her patients money without compromising any degree of quality or service. Dr. Chambers maintains privileges at multiple hospitals and outpatient surgery centers for patient convenience, referring physician preference, insurance requirements, and facility capabilities. Dr. Chambers is committed to continuing education to make available to the Central Florida community the most up to date and advanced surgical techniques. In addition to traditional open surgical procedures, she is highly trained in minimally invasive procedures including robotic surgery. She has extensive experience in all aspects of treating breast and thyroid disease as well as skin cancers such as melanoma and continues to seek out the latest techniques and advancements to improve patients outcomes and survival. Dr. Chambers’s mission is to provide the highest quality surgical care to her patients and the highest quality consultative service to her referring physicians while trying to keep medical expenses and waste to a minimum. In consultation with patients and referring physicians, she practices cooperative patient management, working with them every step of the way to reach treatment decisions and ensure the best combined course of medical and surgical care.

DR. LARA HITCHCOCK Redefining ‘patient-centered’ healthcare for Orlando families

It should come as no surprise that Lara Hitchcock, MD, FAAFP, describes her practice as “patient-centered,” but those in her care will see that term take on new meaning. In May, she will open her new MDVIP-affiliated practice. MDVIP is a national network of primary care physicians who choose to have smaller practices in order to take a more individualized and proactive approach to healthcare. As an MDVIP affiliate, Dr. Hitchcock will reduce her practice from over 4000 patients to no more than 600. “These days, people are spending more time waiting to see their doctor than they are actually spending with their doctor. My dream for the new practice is for no one to wait in my waiting room,” Dr. Hitchcock said. “Appointments will start on time and be unrushed, so my patients and I have time to focus on prevention and wellness in addition to addressing acute needs.” “I am also excited to offer the comprehensive MDVIP Wellness Program Plus which includes advanced health screeners and diagnostic tests that will be performed right in the office. Preventing chronic conditions like heart disease require more than just knowing cholesterol levels. The extensive cardiovascular screenings that my patients will receive each year are designed to assess risk even before symptoms arise. With these insights, we can come up with a plan for prevention, early treatment or even potential reversal of disease,” Dr. Hitchcock added. The unique benefits and services offered in Dr. Hitchcock’s MDVIPaffiliated primary care practice, ranging from a customized wellness plan to a personal medication management program, appeal to individuals and families in Orlando who want a more personalized healthcare experience. Complimentary, get-acquainted meetings are available to discuss the components of the program, including the MDVIP Family Plan option for patients with dependents up to age 26. Dr. Hitchcock has been practicing in Southwest Orlando for 18 years. She is a graduate of the esteemed Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and has been among the Best Doctors® in America as voted by her peers every year from 2005 to present. Dr. Hitchcock is on the Board of Directors of the Integrated Independent Physicians Network and a member of the Clinically Integrated Network of Orlando Health. She also served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Florida State University’s School of Medicine. Photo By Kimberly Jefcoat

DR. MOHAMED INSHAN Williamsburg Physical Medicine From an early age, Dr. Mohamed Inshan had always felt the need to help people. But it wasn’t until he experienced serious and ongoing personal health issues as a teen that drew him to his calling: easing the suffering of people with acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain and other debilitating conditions. “I think it’s my destiny to bring about positive changes that enhance my patients’ well-being,” says Dr. Inshan, who opened Williamsburg Physical Medicine, a chiropractic and physical therapy clinic, eight years ago. “I know how frustrated many of my patients, especially those over 40 feel. They’re in constant pain and it’s preventing them from the lifestyle they want to live.” Exhibiting an enthusiastic attitude and personal manner, Dr. Inshan connects with patients in a holistic manner by examining their medical histories, developing appropriate non-invasive, customized care plans and then fine-tuning them as patients progress through their treatments. He and his staff safely use traditional chiropractic methods such as adjustments to the spine and other parts of the body to correct alignment issues, lessen pain and improve functionality. But he also uses physical therapy techniques and state-of-the-art technology aimed toward patients’ specific needs. His approach has resulted in an overall 94 percent success rate with patients whom he knows he can treat and help improve. Most patients initially receive intense therapy and adjustment until their condition has improved followed by fewer visits to help them maintain their health. But Dr. Inshan, who has been previously recognized as one of the region’s top chiropractors, acknowledges he doesn’t take on every patient because not everyone can be helped. In those cases, he tries to guide them to the right doctor who might provide the appropriate treatment. Raised in Orlando, Dr. Inshan earned his doctorate in chiropractic medicine at the National University of Health Sciences near Chicago after receiving a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences at the University of South Florida. With the chiropractic field rapidly evolving, he keeps pace with the latest research, receives certifications in cuttingedge treatment and other advances and engages with other medical experts throughout Central Florida and at national health conferences. “Our goal is to help the mother, the retiree, the employee and the athlete be a better mother, a better retiree, a better employee and a better athlete so they can perform their jobs, accomplish their daily tasks and enjoy their lives confidently and pain-free,” says Dr. Inshan. ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS

DR. APRIL MERRITT Women’s Care Florida Delaney OBGYN Dr. April Merritt asked her boys, 10 and 13, what they thought about her being voted “Best Doctor”. They asked why did it need to be voted on; they already knew she was the best. She is a wife, a mother and an OBGYN. She sees herself as “not extraordinary by any means,” but the way she puts her heart and soul into everything she does tells an entirely different story. She is happy to be voted “Best Doctor” because she feels her love for her job is truly shining through to others. Though she knows her husband and two sons are her number one fans. Dr. Merritt was born and raised in Charleston, SC. The daughter of a medical surgical Registered Nurse and a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force, she recognized her passion very early for medicine and her drive to excel. This led her to the College of Charleston where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry while researching Organic Chemistry and co-authoring several papers. Dr. Merritt felt the need to pursue a career interacting and helping people on a clinical level, which led her to decide to turn down an offer to continue her research and obtain a PhD. Instead, in 1998 she entered the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. During that time she volunteered at a local pregnancy shelter for teenage girls and participated in education in the schools on sexually-transmitted diseases. Though she always had a passion for women’s health, it was her fourth year medical school rotation on labor and delivery that ignited her dream of becoming an OBGYN. During her medical school years, she met and married her husband, an Army officer and West Point graduate. With his loving support, she completed medical school in 2004. With her husband by her side, Dr. Merritt moved to Orlando Florida to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During residency, they completed their family with the birth of their two sons in 2005 and 2008. Dr. Merritt entered private practice in 2009. She is a partner at Delaney OB/GYN. Soon Delaney OBGYN will open a new office on Lucerne Terrace to better serve their growing population. Dr. Merritt is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery. She is a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. April Merritt was named in the top 20 of Orlando’s Best OB/GYNs. She was also featured with other amazing women in Orlando Style “Woman of the Year” in 2018 and was voted “Most Intriguing Profile” by Orlando Style magazine in 2018. ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS

Dr. Mahnaz Qayyum Family Care Specialists Dr. Phillips A question that I am often asked: ‘Is it possible to permanently rid fat cells without exercise?’ My name is Dr. Mahnaz Qayyum. My specialty is Family Medicine. I provide both traditional and beauty wellness services. Finally, a proven fat loss procedure is now available to us. It is called CoolSculpting. Of extreme importance to my patients and my readers is the understanding that not all CoolSculpting providers are the same. CoolSculpting works best when added to an effective and existing physicianmonitored weight loss plan. I have helped hundreds of my patients keep their weight off through these 4 initiatives. Firstly, the patient and I have a detailed, lengthy, face to face discussion about patient lifestyle assessment, weight loss goals, past failures and successes, and patient personality makeup. Secondly, my existing and experienced weight loss plan conducts a patient blood test. This sets the tone for the roadmap for patient’s entire weight loss journey. The blood test highlights weight loss challenges such as hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, diabetes, and hormonal imbalance for the patient. This can be easily fixed. Thirdly, we conduct lifestyle modifications: more exercise and better food choices. The patient is provided customized weight loss and metabolism boosting medicines. Fourthly, I introduce my patients to the most effective component of my weight loss plan: CoolSculpting. What is CoolSculpting? CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared, nonsurgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting. There is a science behind the success of CoolSculpting. Did you know that we are born with a finite number of fat cells? Fat cells are never created over time, they only get bigger. CoolSculpting provides a revolutionary method by eliminating fat cells from the body. The cells die on contact and are flushed out of the body naturally over the course of three to six months. Our lymphatic system plays a natural role in removing these CoolSculpting-treated fat cells. CoolSculpting is noninvasive: it does not cut into the body and leave surgery scars. It only targets fat cells and is physician monitored. CoolSculpting provides natural looking results and can reduce as much as 20% of the patient’s body fat on each visit. My two family medicine practices, known as the Elysium Group (Family Practice of Celebration & Family Care Specialists of Orlando), are available to add value to you as well. We are located in Dr. Philips and Celebration, Florida. We provide comprehensive health and wellness for ages 7 and up. We help patients achieve a better quality of life. We can be contacted for a free weight loss consult at Family Care Specialist of Orlando (Dr. Phillips), 407.355.7759, or at Family Practice of Celebration, 407.566.1600. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

FLORIDA LAW PROHIBITS Secretly Recording Conversations & Secretly Installing Tracking Devices on Vehicles

Mark Horwitz

By Mark L. Horwitz Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Horwitz & Citro, P.A. Offices in Orlando and Tampa Orlando: 407-843-7733 Tampa: 813-397-3613 mark@horwitzcitrolaw.com www.horwitzcitrolaw.com

It is a crime in Florida to record a conversation unless all parties taking part in the conversation know that they are being recorded. It is also a crime to place a secret tracking device on a vehicle. Privacy laws impact everyone who utilizes a recording device in Florida whether they use a smart phone, computer or other electronic equipment capable of recording a conversation. With today’s smart phones, any conversation can be recorded with the touch of a button. Businesses that record telephone conversations comply with Florida law by announcing at the beginning of a call that the call is being recorded or monitored. A person who continues the call after that disclosure cannot contend that he or she did not know of the recording. In order for the recording of a conversation to violate Florida law, it is necessary that the person being recorded has an expectation that the communication is not being recorded. Therefore, a conversation at a public meeting or an electronic communication to the public, in general, would not be subject to an expectation of privacy. State laws vary concerning the recording of conversations. Florida’s law, like many other states, requires that all parties to the conversation must have knowledge of the recording. A large number of states do not require that all the parties have knowledge of the recording as long as the recording is made by one of the individuals taking part in the conversation. Florida does allow a participant in the conversation to secretly record with the approval of law enforcement. Police may obtain an order to tap a phone, however, there are specific legal requirements which must be met. Illegal recording of a conversation is a felony or a misdemeanor depending upon

96

| STYLETOME.COM

several factors. For instance, the recording is a felony if made for the purposes of direct or indirect commercial advantage, private commercial gain, for any illegal purpose, or for a tortious purpose such as intentional interference with a business relationship. It is also a crime to utilize an illegal recording made by someone else. In Florida, recordings made in violation of law may not be used as evidence in any trial, hearing, or other legal proceeding. A person whose conversation or electronic communication is recorded in violation of Florida law has a right to sue the person or company that records, discloses, uses or causes any person to record or use the illegally recorded communication. The aggrieved person may bring a lawsuit within two years after a reasonable opportunity to discover the secret recording. The plaintiff can seek damages caused by the recording but damages will not be less than $100 a day for each day of the illegal recording or $1000, whichever is higher. The person recorded also may sue for punitive damages and attorney’s fees. Another example of Florida’s concern for the right to privacy is seen in a Florida law passed in 2015. The 2015 law makes it a crime for a person to place on or in a vehicle, a tracking device or tracking application whose purpose is to reveal a vehicle’s location or movement. This law has many exceptions including the right of an owner or lessee to place a tracking device or application on the vehicle. Another exception allows a parent or legal guardian of a minor to place a tracking device or tracking application on the minor’s vehicle. Florida’s laws concerning recording conversations and use of tracking devices on vehicles have many exceptions which are too numerous to include here.

However, immigration is far more complex than an invisible border separating countries or a person’s manner of entry into the U.S. At its heart, immigration is humanitarian and from that foundation the U.S. has established laws and regulations to assist and benefit immigrants who experience a suffering far too common today: domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Specifically, Congress passed and former President Clinton enacted the Violence Against Women Act (“VAWA”) of 1994 into law, which is intended in part to combat violence against immigrant women (and men) and provide protection to those who have suffered violent abuses. In 1994, violent abuse was very much seen as a physical affliction. However as we have seen, through the necessary increase of mental health awareness, someone can be a victim of violent abuse albeit lacking a physical affliction. As a result, the Department of Homeland Security included in its VAWA regulations language to protect those who are also victims of extreme cruelty. Extreme cruelty is such an ambiguous concept especially when coupled with an “invisible” affliction. However, one can be successful in VAWA cases where the victim has been subjected to psychological abuse or exploitation such as gaslighting, perpetrated by the U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident parent or spouse.

Rosa Melia-Acevedo, Esq., Associate with NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article

Gaslighting is a manipulation tactic often times used by an abuser to gain power over their victim. At its core, gaslighting is a struggle for power and control. The abuser overpowers their victim not through physical force but something far worse; the deterioration of their sense of self, leading to a codependency so intense that it creates an excessive emotional or psychological dependency to the abuser. The manipulation begins subtly so that the

victim is not aware of the brainwashing-taking place. Gaslighting begins to chip away at the victim’s perception of reality and sanity as well as their identity and self-worth. For anyone, being a victim of a crime is life altering. For an immigrant, the fear of retribution for reporting an “invisible” crime leaves them feeling hopeless. As a result, many immigrants remain in these manipulative relationships because of false hope, given by the abuser, that it will get better and out of fear that they will be returned to a country that many have fled due to violence. Gaslighting as it relates to immigration is, more often times than not, used by a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident spouse against their immigrant spouse as a way of manipulating the spouse to remain in the mentally abusive relationship. A classic gaslighting technique in the immigration context involves the U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident spouse or parent threatening to call immigration authorities and report falsehoods against the immigrant in exchange for the immigrant not reporting said psychological abuse to authorities or leaving the relationship altogether. VAWA cases based on psychological abuse such as gaslighting are successful in great part due to amazing mental health professionals but also brave victims who are able to realize that the mental manipulation they have been subjected to is just as cruel and harmful as physical abuse. Getting to the truth as to an alleged abused person’s claim is essential on not only legal grounds, but humanitarian ones as well. To ignore violence and abuse, even psychological, is not who we are as a country and as a result regulations are in place to protect our immigrant population that are physically and psychologically abused.

CITY NEWS

Can you believe we’re officially two months into 2019? All of us at Orlando Style are looking forward to another exciting year filled with countless events throughout the city, much like what we experienced this past holiday season! Here are the highlights, just in case you missed it! Christmas met the sea daily throughout December at SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration. The beloved theme park transformed into a holiday wonderland with over 3 million twinkling lights as attendees enjoyed festive shopping, delicious food, and stunning live shows. Guests of all ages shared wishes with Santa Claus while exploring SeaWorld’s Wild Arctic and thousands delighted in SeaWord’s signature Christmas show O Wondrous Night. The live performance featured a nativity with over 30 carols, life-sized puppets, and live animals in a spectacular Christmas favorite based on The Christmas Story. Holidays At Universal Orlando took the Christmas season to new heights with a lineup of festivities throughout the parks. Guests experienced everything from Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to the Grinchmas Wholiday Spectacular, a live retelling of Dr. Seuss’s classic holiday tale starring The Grinch. Merry and mayhem combined at Universal’s Holiday Parade as the Minions joined Santa Claus in an unforgettable celebration that also featured characters from Madagascar and Shrek.

Light Up UCF is Central Florida’s ultimate winter wonderland and it returned to the CFE Arena for its eleventh annual season over the holidays. The festival offered 47 nights of live entertainment, exciting rides, and much more including a world-class choreographed light show featuring more than 200,000 lights pulsing and strobing throughout the night in perfect synchronization to holiday songs under snowfall. On select nights, the holiday film festival encouraged families to gather under the stars and view their favorite holiday films on a 2-story high screen. Guests were also invited to glide along to their favorite hits and holiday tunes played by a live DJ at the Light Up UCF ice rink. It was a winter wonderland indeed! When Mickey celebrates the Christmas season, Magic Kingdom park lights up with excitement for guests of all ages. Cinderella’s Castle shimmers, joyful music fills the air, Disney Characters don their most festive attire, and favorite attractions take on a fun holiday theme! Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party was a magical holiday gathering with enchanting surprises at almost every turn. Held daily throughout the holiday season, guests were invited to share hugs, receive autographs and capture photos with over a dozen familiar Disney

friends as the beloved characters spread holiday cheer around Magic Kingdom park. The Orlando Citrus Parade started in 1980 and has since grown to become one of the largest sports affiliated parades in the nation. The annual event occurs in Downtown Orlando between the Camping World Bowl and the Citrus Bowl games during the last week in December. The 2018 parade took place on the 29th and featured marching bands from high schools across the country as well as the Big Ten and SEC teams that were part of the 2019 Citrus Bowl game. Guest appearances included local and national celebrities, theme park characters from Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, and more. All proceeds went to benefit Give Kids The World Village. NYE 2019 at Wall St. Plaza was the biggest and best New Year’s Eve Block Party in Downtown Orlando! Thousands showed up to party across 2 streets and a whopping 8 venues. The event featured DJ Eric Draven live on stage, 2 LED video walls, a booming sound system and a light show up and down the Plaza. Guests looking for a VIP experience were able to purchase tickets to the Resolutions Lounge where they enjoyed a private, VIP tented lounge with open bar and a special 2am breakfast.. Each Saturday afternoon throughout the month of January, Lakeridge Winery held its famous Winter Music Series which featured live music on both an outdoor stage and inside at their Wine & Cheese Bar upstairs in the winery. The impressive lineup of musicians were hand-picked from the wealth of talent located throughout Central Florida and each act delighted audiences with powerful performances. In addition to the live entertainment, guests also enjoyed complimentary Winery tours and tastings in addition to Lakeridge wine, beer, soft drinks and a variety of food available for purchase. It was the moment we’ve all been waiting for! On January 22nd, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s awardwinning musical Hamilton finally made its long-awaited debut at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Hamilton is the story of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first treasury secretary. The wildly popular Broadway show features a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway. Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now and it continues running in Orlando until February 10th.

BRUNCH YARD HOUSE By Riesa Pascal

There’s a new menu in town that’s redefining how Orlando does brunch!

Located at ICON Orlando 360, Yard

House Orlando is a globally-inspired eatery open daily for lunch, dinner, happy hour and late-night dining. Tourists and locals alike regularly delight in more than 100 made-fromscratch Yard House favorites, but few know that the popular chain recently unveiled a brand new brunch menu that is sure to redefine how you do brunch. Not only does the Yard House brunch menu feature a dozen wildly different entrees, it also offers bottomless mix-and-match house beers, bloody marys, and mimosas for just $15. That’s right, I said bottomless mixand-match which means you can enjoy endless pours of sweet mimosas and bloody marys or switch it up by adding a refreshing house beer to the mix. I was eager to experience this new brunch for myself so that is exactly what I did with my mother and sister in tow. Our server Jonathan was a pure delight from beginning to end as he spoke candidly about the menu and suggested a number of equally fabulous-sounding offerings. With a cold mimosa in hand, I took my time studying each and every mouth-watering description. The

All-American Breakfast with cage-free cheese eggs served with bacon, crispy ripped potatoes and grilled artisan bread sounded like a perfect selection for a breakfast lover like myself. On the other hand, the Corned Beef & Potato Hash was also sure to be a hit with hash of shredded corned beef topped with green onions and a cage-free fried egg. Needless to say, making a decision with so many options took several minutes, but eventually my group was finally able to narrow it down to Avocado Toast, Machaca Con Huevos, and the Breakfast Burger. Time disappeared then as conversation and bottomless drinks flowed and before we knew it, our highly-anticipated brunch had arrived. The magnificent spread before us was a vibrant array of colors and tantalizing aromas that foreshadowed the excellent dining experience to come. The Avocado Toast featured toasted artisan bread topped with smashed avocado, whipped feta, arugula, tomatoes and cage-free fried egg. The bread was large enough for bite size-friendly munching and thick enough to stand up to the weight and spread of toppings without becoming soggy—it was a definite

must try! The Machaca Con Huevo was a praise-worthy take on the popular Mexican dish and came with shredded braised beef and cage-free egg scrambled with red onion, pasilla peppers and jalapeños. In addition to being topped with jack cheese and drizzled with green tomatillo and red ancho chili sauces, the hearty dish also came served with spicy rice, pinto beans and warm flour tortillas. Last, but certainly not least was my entree of choice, the Breakfast Burger. It was an eyecatching sight to behold and my hunger wasn’t going to let me behold it for long without diving in. The dish featured Kurobuta pork burger and pork belly flat grilled and served on a toasted panko bun topped with a cage-free fried egg and maple bacon cream sauce. The handcrafted burger was perfectly complemented with a side of crispy ripped potatoes though it would’ve been plenty filling as a stand alone item. Not a single morsel was spared as the three of us devoured the incredibly unique, yet delicious brunch in front of us. As with any Yard House meal, we were left comfortably full and completely satisfied, but you know what

they say… there’s always room for dessert! At the suggestion of Jonathan, my companions and I opted for Bread Pudding French Toast & Fresh Berries, an additional Brunch Menu entree that doubled as our sugary-sweet dessert. The battered bread pudding was prepared to a crispy golden brown, dusted with powdered sugar and topped with fresh blueberries and strawberries. A serving of maple syrup and maple bacon cream sauce on the side perfectly completed the decadent dish that I predict will quickly become a brunch menu favorite for hundreds of future guests. Whatever you’re doing this weekend, do yourself a favor and make sure it includes brunch at Yard House. Brunch is available every Saturday-Sunday from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM and with a dozen unique entrees, there is truly something for everyone. For those seeking vegetarian friendly dishes, you may enjoy everything from the Vegetable Frittata with cage-free eggs baked with veggies and cheddar to the Quinoa Power Bowl blended with greek yogurt and topped with honey, peanut butter, and fresh fruit. Meanwhile, my fellow meat

lovers will delight in a variety of other brunch selections such as Skirt Steak & Eggs served with house made steak sauce, crispy ripped potatoes, and grilled artisan bread. I personally intend to return very shortly to give the Nashville Hot Chicken a try with fried white meat coated with a hot pepper spice blend and served with sweet potato pancakes. No matter what you’re craving this weekend, you’re sure to find it on the brand new Brunch Menu at Yard House. Oh, and did I mention they have bottomless mix-and-match mimosas? Hope to see you there!

4 LUXURY LIQUORS To consider adding to your collection Spirits and cocktails have become more

popular over the years, but that doesn’t mean that high end spirits are for everyone, for many reasons. Wherever you fall on this, there are some luxury liquors you just need to appreciate, from taste, age, and the bottle itself, the kind you can only find in elite lounges, and five-star hotel minibars. Here are just four liquors we picked. Takashi Murakami X Next5 Sake $50 - $1000

CASHS IRELAND COOPER SINGLE MALT WHISKEY CRYSTAL GLASSES The most perfect glass for single malt scotch or on-therocks malt blends, bourbons and cocktails. Made by five different brewers in the Akita region of Japan, this sake uses the traditional method of placing kimoto yeast in a bag with rice and water, working that bag by hand each day and letting the yeast chow down on the rice and clarify it into alcohol. Johnnie Walker Blue Label ‘Year of the Ram’ $258 or $1,036 for set

We’ll admit theres not much of a difference than the normal Johnnie Walker Blue, but this chinese New Years series features scrollwork on its side depicting a ram. There was similar artwork for the Year of the Horse in 2014, and we’ll admit it’s a

nice touch for collectors. Louis XIII Le Mathusalem $78,000

I know you’re probably thinking, why does this cost as much as car? Well, Remy Martin has been producing cognac for just shy of three centuries. Made in the Cognac region of France with a blend of hundreds of clear eau de vie brandies that are up to a century old, Louis XIII doesn’t get trotted out for just any occasion. A standard 700-milliliter bottle typically fetches upwards of $3,000. A three-liter Jeroboam bottle sells at auction for six figures. Ciroc Ten Vodka $250

Made exclusively from fine French grapes, it’s a new standard of luxury celebration - CÎROC™ TEN. Their master distiller selected a vibrant blend of fine French grape varietals, including the first harvest grapes of the 2013 vintage. The blend was created in celebration of the 10-year anniversary of CÎROC™ Ultra-Premium Vodka. CÎROC™ Ultra-Premium Vodka is gluten free.
