ABOUT THE ARTIST

JOANNE CURRIE NALINGU Celebrated Queensland artist Joanne Currie Nalingu grew up with no formal education or community arts programming. Through many family hardships, she simply watched and listened to other contemporary artists she met, and critically, observed the protocols of an artist’s story. Determined to hone her own distinctive visual language, Joanne later won the prestigious Wynne Prize for landscape in 2008, and more recently, QAGOMA purchased a six-metre major work, following other major works acquired by Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Museum of Brisbane, and University of Queensland Art Museum.

Joanne has continued to explore and develop her own painting style and almost ‘sews’ her painted dots into rhythmic lines. Her work echoes the idea of flow and infinity, a narrative that implies time is a river. Joanne’s paintings speak of the river as a living entity; the rippling of the surface and the changes of the water and ground can be seen as metaphorical events of her own life. Her unique works allude to perceptions of space, spatiality, and time as conceptual expressions in their painting practices.
