Alex’s winning project

planning futures TOOWONG’S STUARTHOLME SCHOOL HAS BEEN RECOGNISED FOR PRODUCING AUSTRALIA’S BEST UP AND COMING TOWN PLANNERS. STUARTHOLME SCHOOL IS officially home to some of the state’s most promising town planners after three students took out the top prizes for Australia’s highest awards.

Recently graduating from Stuartholme School, Alexandra Gilley, is far from your average 17 year old student.

Alexandra took home the National title of Outstanding Secondary Student Project Award at the 2012 Planning Institute of Australia’s Excellence Awards, one of Australia’s highest awards for town planning and design.

Alexandra’s project investigated the issues and management of the Macgregor Terrace, Simpsons Road and Jubilee Terrace intersection in Bardon.

A significant accolade, the Awards for Planning Excellence Program recognises innovation, leadership and excellence in the planning profession.

Planning Institute Australia State Manager for Queensland, Dan Molley said Alex’s work was of an

exceptional standard.

“She effectively investigated the effect of traffic congestion and highlighted possible management strategies for the future”, he said.

Stuartholme School Head of Social Science, Mrs Wendy Bolton said Alexandra is a very hardworking, dedicated and passionate young lady, and this was mirrored in her achievement.

With the support of her school, family and friends, Alexandra said the experience was amazing and is now pursuing town planning as a career path.

“I’ve always been interested in the planning and architecture behind how city roads work - especially what can be done to improve them”, Alexandra said.

Alexandra is now studying architecture at the University of Queensland and plans to start a double degree with law.

As we age, these challenges often include cancer, hypercholesterolaemia, heart disease, depression and anxiety. People respond in various ways when given a diagnosis by a doctor or therapist. Alleviating stress and managing your diagnosis effectively is critical to wellbeing, decision-making, quality of life, and ultimate recovery.

Some coping styles and strategies are more useful than others. To understand and deal with health challenges, it is useful to go through a process of reflection by answering these questions: How much of a threat is this diagnosis for me? What can be done about it? The way you respond to a health concern will depend on how you answered the above questions. For example, you could: think the health issue can be overcome (fighting spirit);

deny that any threat even exists (avoidance); believe that what will be will be (fatalism); see the threat as not being one that can be defeated (helplessness and hopelessness); or worry incessantly about your issue and outcome (anxious preoccupation).

The most useful style to adopt is a fighting spirit. You see the issue simply as a challenge, and have hope and a positive belief about the outcome. Then you can take control and engage in useful behaviors and attitudes; you take an active role in your recovery and see the prognosis as optimistic. A positive psychological state is essential in selecting treatment options and for recovering, so consider what you can do to activate a positive frame.

sweets, pain, and burpees FOUR WEEKS OF INTENSE CLASSES AND CHALLENGING PT SESSIONS; WHAT HAD WE GOTTEN OURSELVES INTO? WE STYLERS ARE particularly fond of sweets, so when the opportunity came up to work out with Kosama Fitness after an exceptionally gorgeworthy day, it was all hands on deck.

Eight of us committed to the Kosama challenge and our initial measurements and capabilities were tried and tested so we would be able to measure just how far we’d come in the aftermath. And so it began: one morning personal training session per week, and at least two classes per week. While some of us opted for more transitional classes like K-Yoga – which by the way is still no walk in the park – others took up the more challenging classes.

The clear favourites were K-TRXBlast and K-Boxing, both of which push you to your absolute failing limits, but in completely different ways. But that’s what all the classes did – pushed us to extend ourselves.

And then there was the personal training: so hard to get out of bed for but so rewarding!

Each session was different, mixing core work, strength and cardio training. We were burning between 300-500 calories (sometimes more) per PT session and per class, and the resulting aches never felt so good.

We joined other Kosama members and nonmembers during their eight-week challenge. The results for us were simple: all (and I do mean all) eight of us feel stronger, leaner, and more energetic. And we’re putting it down to our coaches’ motivation and Kosama’s unique yet satisfying group functional classes. city hall rich with brisbane’s history CITY HALL’S RECENT RESTORATION UNCOVERED A MULTITUDE OF HISTORIC BRISBANE RELICS. FAMOUSLY, WORKERS UNCOVERED an 1860’s streetscape six meters below the auditorium floor.

Pavements and a drain from the streetscape are now fully functioning features of the Enoggera courtyard for Brisbane citizens to enjoy. Cr Angela Owen-Taylor said that the inclusion of the old with the new allows people to generate a sense of nostalgia. “When you look at these pavements it makes you wonder, who has walked this path before?” she said.

The restoration also brought with it the discovery of a Second World War era graffiti wall (pictured).

Between 1939 and 1945 army officers used City Hall as a place to sign up to go to war and as a stop before boarding trains to the ship carriers. 150 veterans marked the wall with their signatures and service numbers. A former City Hall employee has published a book about every person who signed the wall.

Cr Owen-Taylor said that past

methods of construction also impacted the strength of the building. “Concrete in the 1920’s was hand mixed and it was never a consistent batch. Because of that the stability of the concrete is about a 10th of what we have today,” she said. Plaster in the ceiling of City Hall also had to be properly restored due to 1920’s plasterers using a method which saw them mix plaster with horse hair to add strength.

Every effort has been made to retain the understated elegance of yesteryear with today’s standards and technology. The old lamp holders have been restored for use as lights in their original rooms. Tiles in the bathroom were created to mimic the design of the pre-existing floor tiles. The doors have kept their original brass handles. While patterns on the original windows have been carried across onto exclusive wallpapers and rugs in the museum (pictured).

fighting fit MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTER JESSY JESS TAKES LUCY STEPHENS BEYOND THE BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS AND INTO THE HEART OF COMBAT SPORTS. OVERCOMING A BARRAGE of challenges to come out victorious against a World Muay Thai Champion in a televised fight, Jessy Jess is reaping the benefits of years of gruelling training and intense discipline.

The eldest of eleven children, Jessy had an unconventional upbringing. Her mother and three of her siblings would load into a van and drive around the east coast of Australia, settling at various alternative farms.

Relocating to Townsville in her late teens, Jessy began her love affair with combat sports.

Crediting a strict two-year training regime, she overcame a severe alcohol addiction before her first kickboxing fight.

“I know some people look at Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as a violent sport but it really isn’t...

MMA definitely changed my life. Once I made the decision to dedicate myself to it, I found that discipline and motivation that I had been lacking.

For me, MMA isn’t about the actual competition. It’s about being in the gym and taking yourself to hell and back, and surviving!”

Now living in Brisbane and training out of Integrated MMA, Jessy has a total of three from three wins under her (championship) belt.

In April, she defeated world champion Muay Thai fighter Eilleen Forrest, and in her biggest achievent yet, she beat world title holding boxer Arlene Blencowe as part of the Nitro 9 event in July.

It’s clear the 25 year old is on a winning streak and Jessy says she has big plans to show the country that MMA is a legitimate, hard working

GOING TO MEET with a politician is an intimidating concept; however my trepidations were allayed as soon as I met with Teresa: a warm, funny, eloquent woman who has to touch up her lipstick just like the rest of us.

An average day for Teresa is always busy, with a continual stream of constituents’ meeting, doorknocking, shop visits, citizenship ceremonies, interviews, branch and campaign meetings, community events – and that’s all in one day! But throughout, it’s obvious that Teresa’s commitment lies with getting out into the community.

When I asked her what were the more common issues local Brisbane residents were raising, without hesitation she said the economy, congestion on Brisbane roads, and the increasing cost of childcare.

Her priorities, she says, lie firmly with improving the conditions of all these three key challenges. This includes removing the carbon tax to reduce the cost of living, working with local and state governments to implement tangible road solutions, and plans to implement a Productivity Commission Enquiry to ensure flexible and affordable childcare for Brisbane families. Childcare improvements are particularly close to Teresa’s heart as when she entered politics in 1996, she was herself a sole parent juggling work and family life.

While she didn’t see herself necessarily working in politics when she was younger, Teresa says friends were clued into her career long before she was. Her motivation to help others was obvious, with her

community work being merely an extension of that desire. Teresa fondly recalled a situation when a woman thanked her for helping her get a carer’s allowance for her child, allowing the woman to pursue her masters and then her doctorate.

There is no way you can question Teresa’s love of Brisbane and passion for improving our local communities. “Brisbane has been transformed into this dynamic, electric city and I’m humbled to be a part of it.” Teresa also lists as one of her achievements of political life, being appointed an Honorary Ambassador for Brisbane.

While days off for Teresa are at best infrequent, she says that in her free time she enjoys catching up with family and friends, cooking, and going for walks with her dog, affectionately known as Cranky Frankie.

PATIENTS WITH SPIDER veins often ask, “how much do the needles hurt?”. Each person has a different pain threshold, so it is difficult to give a precise answer to this question. I think these are some important points that might assist with expectations: • The needles used in sclerotherapy are very fine. They are a slightly larger gauge than acupuncture needles but much smaller than vaccination needles.

• The pain arises for three different reasons: Initial puncture of the skin is the first source of pain, so small gauge needles cause less pain in this situation. Secondly, pain might arise from tissue expansion. This will cause pain in the same way as a “boil” causes pain.

Small amounts of spillage will always occur but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. Thirdly, the different types of sclerosants each have their own properties and vary in the amount of discomfort they cause if they enter the interstitial tissue.

HOUSE WASHING TRANSFORMS a house, plain and simple! Being in the industry since 2007 I’ve come to know that houses often need a bit of TLC to not only improve and maintain the value but also give respect to the building that people consider their home!

Over time, there is an unavoidable build up of moss, dust, animal damage and just general wear from mother nature that creates an unattractive look on the external layer. House washing increases the appearance of a home, therefore increasing its worth and possible sale value.

Most paint jobs occur every 7-8 years because people think that’s the right solution when in fact, a thorough external clean could be the very thing your house needs. External washing extends the life of the last paint job out to 11-12 years, making that painting investment stretch by another four years minimum! Ongoing maintenance is just as vital with a not so in-depth clean needed every six months.

NETWORKING DOESN’T ALWAYS come naturally but is a critical aspect of marketing – whether you are selling your own business or just yourself. Walking into a room full of strangers may be daunting but a little preparation can pay dividends.

• Dress so you feel confident – a genuine smile and a friendly, simple introduction will break the ice. Remember, you are all here for the same reason.

• Look for someone who looks uncomfortable and then focus on making them comfortable – you’ll soon forget your own nerves.

• Don’t try and talk to everyone in the room – it is far more beneficial to connect with two or three people than collect a fistful of meaningless business cards.

festival spirit ONE OF BRISBANE’S OLDEST AND MOST COMMUNITY-CENTRIC SUBURBS IS GEARING UP FOR THEIR ANNUAL STREET FESTIVAL.

THE NUNDAH VILLAGE street festival and art show is a much-loved annual event – and this year it’s set to be bigger and better than ever before.

The event kicks off with movies in Boyd Park, with a free sausage sizzle and fireworks at 6pm on Friday September 6.

On Saturday, the official Tour de Nundah bike race will weave it’s way from Hamilton to Nundah, before the art show opens st 10am, displaying some of Brisbane’s best artists until 2pm in the Honda Workshop in Wood Street.

On Sunday, the art show will again open its doors, while Nundah Village Street Festival takes the celebrations up a notch from 9am until 3pm.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy the street entertainers, aerial dislay, stage acts, music,

comedy and more. Take a stroll down ‘eat street’ on Station Street and sample some international food, or pop into Cibo on Aspinal street (touted as the next James street) for a freshly brewed coffee.

If you’re looking for a spot of shopping, Nundah’s boutiques will open as per usual on Sunday, with Panda Pearls hosting their infamous sidewalk sale on Buckland Road. sinful concoction DRACULA’S LATEST MADCAP MASHUP IS JUST THE TONIC.

THREE PARTS GOTH comedy, two parts cabaret, and a whole lot of unusual; Dracula’s formula for entertainment has always been unique. Their latest brew is Sin & Tonic slicker, edgier and sexier than ever before – and broken down into smaller bite-sized pieces.

Myself and two Style colleagues headed down one Friday night to check out the new show. Once inside, you’re directed to the ghost train (via the bar) which takes you through to the ‘theatre of the dead’.

Entrèes are served with drinks and main orders taken by punked-up, vampish waiters while two of the show’s leads, Richard Macionis and Rudi Testa with Dracula’s band, ‘The Spine Crushers’ entertain the crowd. Contortion, aerial stunts, plenty of laughs, and some sexier dance moves follow. These are enthusiastic, seasoned performers skillfully working the crowd.

Burlesque features heavily and the show has a distinctly more adult direction than some of the previous shows.

Every year, the owners head abroad to watch

some of the best live theatre and shows in Europe and the US for inspiration. “We’re really an adult show,” owner Marc Newman says.

“We don’t want to tone it back, our audiences want something raw; we’re reclaiming what we started.”

With the change in format, it gives the audience an opportunity to interact with the waiters, the performers, and each other.

“People aren’t content to sit for longer shows, so we’ve made it less demanding on the audience. We’ve incorporated the latest stateof-the art audio and light systems to make it more 3D, and we think we can place Dracula’s on the world stage.”

The result is still very Dracula’s, but more polished. Sin & Tonic is a titillating vaudeville extravaganza, with a world-class mix of burlesque, singing, dancing, and madcap comedy.

bowled over GET DOWN TO ENOGGERA BOWLS CLUB FOR CHEAP EATS, DRINKS, AND THE PERFECT CELEBRATION VENUE. NOT ONLY DOES the club have plates-a-plenty of large, scrumptiously filling pub-style dishes (think burgers, chicken parmi, fish and chips, and steak – so delicious!), you can also play barefoot bowls for free on Sundays! So some of us at Style decided a Sunday sesh was in order.

And we discovered that barefoot (or in our case, not-so-barefoot) bowls was barrels of fun, especially when paired with a $3 schooner of Carlton Midstrength. With both bus and train stations on hand, it’s the perfect relaxed activity for a social Sunday afternoon, not to mention an ideal space for a party or function.

You and your party of friends can get started early in the afternoon with a game of bowls and carry on into the night thanks to the club’s vast

event space and bar.

The Enoggera Bowls Club can fit up to a whopping 250 people, catering for large-scale events such as engagement parties and 21st birthdays to smaller, more casual events such as a 20-person event, as well as specialising in conferences. It really is a versatile venue!

While there were a few hit and (mostly) misses when we ventured into a game with some of the regulars, it was definitely a rewarding and fun experience – a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an afternoon: friendly competition, beer in hand, and a hearty meal.

spring into party mode IT’S ONLY AUGUST, BUT SPRING IS ABOUT TO BE SPRUNG – ALL IN THE NAME OF CANCER. THE ICONIC STAMFORD Plaza Hotel in Brisbane will turn all floral when it hosts a garden party on August 30 to support Cancer Council.

This is the first time this fundraising event has been held as part of Daffodil Day, which has been raising much-needed funds for the past 27 years for life-saving cancer research, prevention programs and support services for Australians facing cancer.

Cancer Council spokesperson, Sharon Hartley, said the non-profit organisation hoped this event would encourage Brisbane’s corporate community to don a daffodil and host their very own garden party.

“Garden Party is a wonderful initiative that we hope to grow support for over the next few years as a fresh and fun new way for the corporate community to engage 54

The three teenagers from the Gold Coast are using their creative flair to make it in the fashion world.

And when it comes to style – there’s no denying these girls have it figured out.

At just 16 years old, Karri has already modelled for Daniel Luxford, the Byron Bay Bridal Showcase, Vanguard Fashion and The Bleach Festival.

“These days more and more young people are becoming successful early. If you look at people like Jessica Watson, Kendall Jenner, even Miranda Kerr - they were on the rise at 16,’’ Karri said.

“If you have talent you shouldn’t hide it - you should express it and show it off.’’

Wisdom. Maturity. Determination.

It isn’t the normal fare for one so young.

But Karri says you have to be confident to reach your dreams.

“Young people need to believe in themselves,’’ she said.

“If you really want something and put your mind to it, anything can 60

Discovering a love for her camera at a very young age, Emily is a selftaught photographer who shows talent beyond her years.

She is now studying a diploma of photography to develop her skills.

And Samantha is a 17 year old with some serious style. She says she uses her personal wardrobe for fashion shoots – and dreams of one day working as a stylist.

With their new ideas and fresh perspectives, the three girls recently got together for a fashion shoot.

“We wanted to recreate the Russh Magazine photo feature with Miranda Kerr, which came out in 2012. But we wanted to do it in a new and imaginative way,’’ Emily said.

“I took the photos, Karri modelled and Sam styled the shoot with her own fashion. We wanted to reform the Russh feature which had a mixture of grunge, vintage and girly looks.’’

And the result: flawless chic.

“Both girls are amazing to work with and we had so much fun while we were shooting,’’ Karri said.

“We hope we can do much more in the future. Because you have to have motivation to reach your dreams.”

Polenta and almond cake with poached rhubarb and lemon Cake Sponge

Poached rhubarb

400g soft salted butter diced 400g caster sugar 400g ground almonds 300g fine polenta 2 tsb baking powder 2 tsb ground allspice 2 each lemon and orange zest 8 eggs

6 large sticks of rhubarb 50g sugar A pinch of black pepper 2 shots of Pavan liqueur Orange zest

Method

MATCHED WITH THE PINES LIMITED RELEASE 4 ELDORADO IPA BEER

1. Preheat oven to 180˚C/160˚C fan forced and grease and line a 22cm cake tin.

2. In a mixer cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add 1/3 of the dry mixture followed by 2 eggs and repeat this process until all ingredients are combined.

3. Mix through citrus zest and transfer into prepared cake tin.

Bake for 20 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean, then transfer to a cooling rack.

4. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, dissolve the sugar in the Pavan and add the zest and pepper.

5. Cut down the washed rhubarb into manageable pieces and add to the saucepan – you will need to add some water to just cover the rhubarb and bring to a simmer. Cover and leave to the side for around 5 to 10 minutes depending on how ripe the stalks are. When done refrigerate until cool.

Building your cake 1. Cut sponge into 3 disks as shown. Starting on the bottom layer, spread lemon curd and place some rhubarb over it, trying to achieve a flat surface to sit the next layer on.

Repeat this process and add the last disk of polenta sponge.

2. Decorate the top with anything you like (we used torched Italian meringue and roasted hazelnuts).

recipe for success TWO ENTREPRENEURIAL BRISBANE BEST MATES ARE DISHING UP CUSTOMISED READY-MADE MEALS WITH A TWIST. BY LUCY STEPHENS. FOR SPORTS SCIENTIST Ben Doolan and business owner Tristram Hoppe, starting their meal business FivePointFour was a no brainer.

“The idea came about after helping friends with their diets, noticing that they didn’t have the time nor the energy to follow, prepare, or cook meal plans given to them. I asked if they could follow everything if meals were cooked and delivered weekly – and they all said yes.”

So, with Ben’s experience working with elite athletes and Tristram’s background in product and business development, the two long time school friends combined brawn and brains to start FivePointFour; devising healthy meal plans and meals five days a week, four times a day in a home kitchen to busy fitness oriented clientele.

Twelve months later, the meal business has proven to be a meal ticket for the savvy duo, with a larger commercial kitchen, a warehouse and additional staff required to meet the demand of many happy customers.

Ben attributes the company’s success to their unique approach. “Our plans are like no other in that they’re designed to increase lean muscle mass and size in contrast to the general weight loss programs around,” Ben says.

“The big difference between us and the

competition can be found in the breakdown of macronutrients. Meals are suitable for absolutely everyone however, we have had enormous success with physically active males.”

Clients can simply head to the website, fill in the lifestyle questionnaire and Ben will put together a four week plan of 15 meals per week tailored specifically to meet their personal requirements.

“Meals vary greatly in size, with daily calories ranging from 1300 to 3500 calories. Generally, meals are a breakdown to a ratio of 35:45:20 (protein:carbohydrates:fats) with meals low in saturated fats and low in GI carbohydrates.

“While there is a lot of discussion in the fitness industry about carbohydrates vs fats, we feel as though we have the ratio spot on – and our client’s results are a testament to this.”

As for the next 12 months, Ben says he and Tristram hope the business will develop further, with plans to expand to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

“We receive emails daily from potential clients from other states, so who knows what will happen! Ultimately our goal is to offer a service that’s flawless and suitable for everyone.”

CELEBRITY CHEF POH Ling Yeow, of MasterChef fame, officially opened the new Gourmet Fresh precinct.

Yeow conducted a set of demonstrations over the initial opening days, which saw her create meals using ingredients sourced from the precinct retailers.

Woolworths has relocated from the bottom level into the $16 million precinct to reside beside a range of speciality food stores. The expansion has enabled the centre to accommodate 10 new retailers including an Asian grocer, artisan butcher, fresh and cooked seafood market, green grocer, sushi restaurant, cafes, a homewares store and an acclaimed local florist.

Centre Manager, Leah Mienert, said the Gourmet Fresh precinct is unlike any other. “The quality and range of retailers within Gourmet Fresh, coupled with the distinctive aesthetic design and layout of the precinct, is a big step away from the traditional

shopping centre fresh food offering,” she said.

Mienert believes the unique fresh food and dining experience that Gourmet Fresh offers enables Indooroopilly to set a new benchmark for shopping centre precincts.

“Many of the stores source products locally and can offer expert advice to customers on how to prepare, store and serve their produce,” Mienert said. “We are excited to open a precinct that allows everyone to shop for fresh produce and enjoy a host of gourmet eat-in options in a market style environment.”

An eat-in gourmet delicatessen, French bakery and renowned Yum Cha restaurant are scheduled to open within the precinct soon.

FRIDAY’S HAS BEEN a well known Brisbane institution for as long as I can remember. In fact, I think the venue might even be similar in age to myself (our editor Claire was part of the opening crew just quietly!!). However despite having had numerous dancefloor boogies with friends over the years, I had never managed to make it to The Waterline Restaurant.

To be honest, although I had heard it was a popular haunt for business folk through the week, I hadn’t really noticed the restaurant before so I was in for a pleasant surprise to find that it sits alongside the waterfront with floor to ceiling glass, offering uninterrupted views of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge.

Heading in on a Monday night with two guests, the restaurant was quiet and intimate, with candle lit tables set against the backdrop of the iconic Story Bridge. The menu is substantial, with offerings ranging from entrées, light meals, mains and chargrilled selections from ‘the grill’, with an impressive wine list to match.

I couldn’t resist the slow cooked pork belly with roast cinnamon apple, baby carrots, potato gratin and red wine jus, while my guests opted for the chicken and mushroom risotto with snow peas, and a 350g, 1824 sirloin steak, with crisp Italian potatoes, zucchini ribbons with almonds, and a creamy green peppercorn sauce.

A sign of a good pork belly is the state of its crackling – and it was absolute perfection. In fact, from start to finish, the dish was a cracker. And from the sounds being created by my guests, it was clear their dishes were also scoring very highly. While you may know Friday’s for its nightlife, The Waterline Restaurant is a hidden gem well worth a visit.

WHILE HEADING TO a bar on Caxton Street on the night of a State of Origin game may not seem like everyone’s cup of tea, myself and three female compadres decided it was a great way to get amongst the atmosphere (while the boys enjoy the game) and try something completely new.

Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall is the brainchild of Cabiria and Peasant’s Jamie Webb and Sydney’s Jason Scott of Shady Pines Saloon and has slunk into the space left vacant by gentleman’s club, Velvet Cigar. While the new bar retains the former venue’s vampy vibe, Lefty’s has a left of centre honky-tonk personality. It’s hard to work out whether it’s a wild-west themed house of ill repute or a twisted fun house.

At the bar we ordered Champagne with some complimentary popcorn, but once the crowd dissipated, we relocated to saloon booth seats with a taxidermy peacock, bear and moose head as companions.

w hat t o wear The drinks menu consists mainly of craft beers and spirits, and if you’re after something healthy to eat, then you best look elsewhere. We chowed down on American-style crispy popcorn shrimp, cheesy corn dogs, onion rings and French fries. Perfect carny fare served until the bar closes.

Lefty’s hosts live blue-grass music most nights, and almost everything on offer here makes you feel like you’re engaging in illicit behaviour - which is probably the intention. Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall is scandalously unique, and sure to attract crowds of all kinds looking for a hootin’ tootin’ good time.

Pantone named emerald the color of this year, and Megan said this would continue through to 2014.

“We have seen a lot of greens but expect more in the future,” she said.

“But it isn’t just one particular colour of green – we are seeing all different shades of greens including emeralds, olives and pale greens.”

Along with spring’s freshest colour - metals, unique pieces and textures are just a few of the interior decorating trends Megan also thinks will be big.

“Textures add depth and dimension to an interior space while different metals like brass and bronze are very in,’’ she said.

“And you can incorporate both these trends by finding really unique one-off objects in markets and auction houses and even at online sites like Ebay.”

Megan said this season was all about blurring the line between interiors and exteriors.

“There has been a massive move towards people reconnecting with nature and going towards more organic, natural environments in their home,” she said.

“You can see this by a rise in vertical gardens, green walls and even outdoor rugs.”

She said you could mimic the natural organic look and ffeel in your home by adding plants, wood grains and stone iin different areas in your home.

LUCY STEPHENS DISCOVERS ANOTHER WORLD; RIGHT ON BRISBANE’S DOORSTEP. AN UNFORTUNATE ASPECT about living in Brisbane and in Queensland means you often take your immediate surrounds for granted and don’t explore them as much as you should.

I was invited by Brisbane Marketing to explore greater Brisbane and discovered a piece of the country I never even knew existed.

After a 90-minute drive from Brisbane one Saturday morning, we arrived at Spicers Hidden Vale in Grandchester. This farming property is situated on 12,000 acres of fertile land, with an original homestead at the centre and accommodation in the form of cottages (some which date back to the 1920s).

This Spicers Property offers a range of activities designed to give the guest an authentic country experience, so after checking in, it was straight into horse riding followed by laser clay and archery. www.stylemagazines.com.au

I saddled up on old steed Kevin – a former champion racing horse who had now retired.

For the next 30 minutes, we ambled across the country-side, watching the kangaroos and the birds in complete serenity. The air was fresh, the breeze was crisp; I felt a million miles away yet I was just over an hours drive from home.

I managed to fluke a bullseye in archery, but was less than impressive in the laser clay.

After lunch, it was a quick 4WD of the property before heading back for dinner in Cotton’s Restaurant.

Cotton’s is intimate and cosy, situated inside the main homestead. The menu is driven by regional produce and Australian flavours, to create meals that are colourful, seasonal and delicious.

The next morning, it was yoga overlooking the valley before heading off to Ipswich.

This city is steeped in rich architectural and historical beauty; clearly visible in the homes, churches and businesses such as the Ipswich Antique Centre.

Before lunch, we checked out the Top of Town precinct – which is a Mecca for one-of-a-kind treasures (check out ES Traders), vintage finds and artisan eats – just like the organic, locally sourced homemade treats at Fourthchild Cafe where we ate lunch (this place is a must-visit when out this way).

From there it was back home. Next time you’re looking to get away or just make a day of it, venture closer to home and you may just be surprised by what you find.
