THE BEST OF THE BLOGOSPHERE Get to know the faces behind the best blogs in Brisbane and beyond in our new interview series. AT STYLE WE love to celebrate local up and comers. That’s why we’ve started The Blogger Series on stylemagazines.com.au - a way for us to champion the best local bloggers on the insta photo map. In part three, Jane Schon got to know the creator of Zest Fashion Blog, Rachele Edson. Even though Rachele is new to the blogger scene, with her natural flair for fashion and modelesque look, we think she’s destined to join the ranks of the blogging elite… What’s been your favourite collaboration so far? I absolutely loved working with Nick Azar and Aicha Robertson on their look book for The Great Beyond. It’s so satisfying working with other creatives on a joint project and creating beautiful imagery. Another job I loved was helping style a runway show in Brisbane for the top nine contestants of Chinese reality TV show, I, Supermodel that was a crazy experience!

Any designers you religiously follow? Isabel Marant, Olivier Rousteing at Balmain, Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy and Raf Simons at Dior. If you had to live with one celebrity’s wardrobe, who’s would you chose? Kendall Jenner. She has a great mix of off-duty model street wear and glamourous party looks. Pick your ultimate front row gang to hit New York Fashion Week with… Christine Centenera, Rachel Zoe, Cara Delevingne, Leandra Medine and my fashion blogger gal-pal Aicha [AKA The Fashion Heist] of course! Name something in your wardrobe you could never throw out… My patent black Christian Louboutin Pigalle heels... they are my first and only pair of Louboutins (so far) given to me by my boyfriend - I cried when I opened the box!

HOT OR NOT WITH RACHELE THE MARBLE TREND? HOT. MY IPHONE CASE IS WHITE MARBLE WITH MY INITIALS ON IT! MILEY CYRUS? NOT (SORRY FANS). I THINK SHE’S INSANELY TALENTED BUT SHE’S GONE A LITTLE FAR OFF THE RAILS FOR ME TO ADMIRE HER LATELY. LOUIS VUITTON? ALWAYS, ALWAYS, HOT. I MEAN DID YOU SEE THE LV CRUISE COLLECTION THAT WAS JUST SHOWN IN PALM SPRINGS? NICOLAS GHESQUIÉRE IS A GENIUS. WWW.ZESTFB.COM

BAMBOO STYLE Hannah Doody chats to Phi Huynh about his brand new men’s label, Cash Berry Clothing. Where did the name “Cash Berry Clothing” come from? I thought people would subconsciously relate to it. Our world revolves around money (and everyone loves money), and berries are a sweet and luxurious fruit. So “Cash Berry” came up in my head and was catchy so I decided on that. What inspired you to start your label? I find it very hard to find men’s clothing that offers real value for money in Brisbane, so I decided to start my own label stumbling across a new material only recently available in Western cultures - Bamboo. What is your fashion philosophy? We have a saying ‘you don’t have to be rich to have class’ because I believe it’s not the store you buy your clothes in, but the clothes you buy in the store. People don’t have to buy expensive things to look good! Most of your shirts are made from

bamboo, what are the benefits of this material? Eco friendly bamboo is a resilient and durable fibre which is also beautifully soft to touch. When compared in studies to cotton and polyester, it has been found to be stronger, have better moisture wicking properties, is UV protective, biodegradable and hypoallergenic. Do you see your label expanding? Definitely. As of August this year we will have bamboo boxers, short sleeve shirts and suit pants available. Tell us about your free hugs campaign? To make people aware of the luxurious qualities of bamboo (you can’t tell just by looking at it), we had an idea to dress up in bamboo shirts and give free hugs to the public so they could FEEL the difference. We got a lot of views on our facebook page following that. WWW.CASHBERRYCLOTHING.COM

YOUR SAVINGS GUIDE Budgeting? Saving money? If these sound like daunting concepts, read on for some helpful tips from CommBank. HERE AT STYLE we’re always looking for new ways to save some extra money (shoes are expensive, you know), so we went to the experts at the CommBank flagship branch on Queen Street to get some tips to help us save some extra cash. It’s easy to talk about getting your finances in order, but actually doing so in a smart and economical way can be difficult. It can be an overwhelming task to work out what changes need to be made to help improve everyday money management. The average Australian spends over two hours a month managing their finances, spending the bulk of their time on everyday tasks. This includes monitoring bank balances, paying bills, and even just transferring money between accounts. Not everyone has the time to monitor their finances online and that’s where the 20

CommBank App steps in to lend a hand and help save that hard-earned cash. By spending less time on financial admin tasks and managing more of our finances on a smartphone, CommBank has found we could save more than 13 million hours a month as a nation. In fact, a switch to mobile banking could save Australians time when it comes to managing account balances, paying bills, making transfers, cancelling and replacing damaged, lost or stolen cards, and even setting and managing regular expenditure. To find out more tips, visit CommBank’s flagship branch on Queen Street, or download the CommBank App on your smartphone. A LITTLE STYLE GOES A LONG WAY

REVERSING SUN DAMAGE

DIAGNOSING HEADACHES

STYLING AN EVENT need not cost more than the event itself. In fact, the age old adage of ‘less is more’ is ever prominent in the style world. If budget or space is holding you back, don’t let it constrain your creativity. Instead, focus on key styling elements to set the scene. A statement entrance or strategically placed installation can bring an event space together. Select a colour palette and use it en masse - think: floor length navy satin table cloths or the use of up lighting in the chosen shade. Why not add a commanding centrepiece – a cluster of single colour blooms are often more cost effective than complex floral arrangements. Though using a stylist may seem like an extravagant initial outlay, they’re experts in achieving the desired look within a budget – which nearly always works out to be more cost effective in the long run. They also have a great network of contacts and a whole raft of costsaving tips at their disposal. The experts will ensure your next event is on-trend, on-budget, and truly memorable.

WINTER IS THE best time to reverse skin sun kisses! UV radiation alters skin cell DNA, causing lines, wrinkles, discolouration and even cancer. Each minute you’re in the sun, your body registers it. Here’s how to reverse the damage: Step 1: Cleanse and exfoliate the right way. Chemical exfoliation dissolves dead skin cells instead of scrubbing them off as granule cleansers do. Step 2: Beat brown spots. Laser or IPL will lighten the brown areas of your skin, and will remove it slowly over time. Step 3: Dab serum. Special serums target the cells deep in the skin, help block colour from being produced and improve the skin’s uneven production of melanin. Step 4: Burn no more. Apply broad spectrum sunscreen 20 minutes before exposure and reapply every two hours if you’re out in the sun. Step 5: Armed with antioxidants. Apply creams and serums with antioxidants such as stable Vitamin C.

TOO OFTEN ARE headaches and migraines misdiagnosed. The importance of correctly diagnosing the type of headache you suffer from is the key in order to stopping headaches for good. Common types of headaches you may suffer from can be the following: • Tension Headache • Migraine • Sinus Headache • Cluster Headache • Menstrual or Hormonal Migraine • Cough Headache • Exertional Headache • Cervicogenic Headache • Trigeminal Neuralgia • Vertigo/Dizziness Headache Understanding the exact type of headache you suffer from may be the difference between living a life filled with headaches, to living a life free from headaches. If you haven’t had your headaches diagnosed, we strongly recommend you are assessed by an expert headache clinician.

WHEN CHOOSING THE perfect engagement ring, remember that there are no rules to limit your imagination. Your dream ring may be any shape of diamond – a classic round brilliant cut, cushion cut, oval or pear. The design may be a diamond solitaire, a trilogy or the ever-popular halo. However, for something as individual as you – at Diamonds International if you can’t find ‘the one’ you are looking for in stock let us have it designed and created for you. The benefit of a bespoke ring design is that you have complete creative control over the components and specifications you desire. Our diamond consultants can offer you guidance and advice on personalising your ring design. With the latest technology we can now bring your dream ring to life in a CAD (Computer Aided Design) three-dimensional version in print to view prior to the final creation. We can help make diamond ring design exciting, romantic, and a truly wonderful experience.

IT ISN’T OUT of the ordinary to experience a bout of “seasonal depression” during winter, so when you’re designing a new kitchen or living space, one of the key components to address in the design should be lighting. Lighting plans need to be developed early in the planning process, and good designers will discuss the activities that are performed in different locations to help decide on the best use of task and accent lighting. Using downlight and LED strip lighting throughout kitchen and living spaces can help brighten things up a bit. Overlooked mood lighting will be noticeable in a home, as mood lighting is what will help overcome those winter blues. Using pendant and other lighting in a cluster allows a strong hue of light to permeate throughout the space. Round feature lighting and extraction fans can also help to soften harsh edges and bring personality into a space, as well as being on-trend and minimalist. When using an achromatic colour scheme, the right lighting will make a space warm and inviting.

BBQ LOVERS UNITE

A NATURAL CURE?

THE PERKS OF APARTMENTS

THE BRISBANE BBQ scene has been thriving over the past 12 months with the traditional style of American Low’n’Slow BBQ the flavour of the month. Brisbane foodies have spoken and Brisbane will see its first official Low’n’Slow BBQ festival this July. The event will be held at Wandering Cooks at Fish Lane, South Brisbane on July 18 and 19. There will be something for everyone at the festival including a BBQ smoking master class, cooking demonstrations, an Australasian Barbecue Alliance sanctioned competition as well as pop-up bars, BBQ food trucks and live music. Festival goers who are interested in getting involved in BBQ will have the opportunity to see how the competition cooks do it, as well as industry experts demonstrating a range of different smokers and cooking styles. If you are just up for a relaxed afternoon of American BBQ, a beer or two and a bit of live music then have a look into this event at www.brisbanebbqfestival.com.

THERE ARE MANY HERBAL and home remedies advertised online for the treatment of spider and varicose veins in a variety of forms from pills to wraps. Some are cheap and others not but all seem to guarantee quick, pain free removal of your veins. These products are termed Veno-active drugs (VAD) or Phlebotonic drugs and are mostly derived from plant extracts. There seems to be various modes of action depending on the individual drug. Beneficial effects include reduction in capillary leakage, anti-inflammatory effects by scavenging free radicals, and improvements in venous tone and on the lymphatic system. But, what is the level of scientific evidence? Pentoxifylline, Sulodoxine and micronized purified flavonoid fraction have demonstrated some benefit to patients with Chronic Venous Disease in a few trials. However, strong recommendations with Level 1 evidence cannot currently be made. Until more evidence is gathered, sclerotherapy and Endothermal ablation remain the most successful methods.

WITH POPULATIONS IN major cities booming and house prices soaring, apartment living is becoming the popular choice for more people than ever before. It’s been the lifestyle choice for years for hip New Yorkers, so why not in Australia? Here are the benefits of apartments: • Spending hours cleaning is a waste of time, less time cleaning is more time enjoying yourself; • A sense of community that enhances the chance of getting to know other like-minded people; • Less time plucking weeds and mowing lawns, balcony space is a great place for herb gardens; • More affordable, especially for first home buyers trying to get into the market; • Your ticket to a trendy inner fringe suburb where a house would cost a small fortune; • Swapping “space for place” means you afford a better lifestyle close to amenities and entertainment; • Better security with intercoms, secure lobbies and car parks; and finally, • Far less maintenance to worry about, and the body corporate is there to handle big issues.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

WHAT’S YOUR DRESS LEVEL?

SACRIFICE FOR THE ASHES

PANDAPEARLS RECENTLY HAD the honour of creating a strand of pearls for a special lady’s 90th birthday. Her family rallied when she declared, “I will never own a strand of real pearls in my lifetime!” That got me thinking, there is often confusion about nature’s true gemstone, as there are many types of pearls. Natural pearls are very rare and made without human interference. Today, most pearls are cultured - when a real pearl is formed by inserting a substance into the oyster. I’m proud to say Australia harvests the most beautiful pearls in the world! Baroque pearls are irregular in shape, and mabe pearls grow to one side of the shell and are often set as rings or enhancers. Freshwater pearls are less expensive as they are cheaper to farm and more pearls can be harvested. Advancements in Perticulture produces freshwater harvests of such quality to rival the more expensive South Sea. Pearls are now more accessible and affordable to all! Happy birthday Harriet - I look forward to welcoming you to the world of PandaPearls!

YOUR INDUSTRY AND who you are meeting should determine how you dress. There are numerous levels of dress depending: Conservative Men – Dark suit with a discreet pattern and two buttons. White cotton shirt, socks to match the trouser with black brogue or oxford shoe. Women – Dark pant suit, white blouse, clean lines, quality fabric and great fit, closed in pump. Business with personality Men – Suits with distinct patterns. Add pale shirts with bold patterns. French or button cuffs, bright ties and funky socks. Women – Skirt/pant in a strong colour and stylish cut. Co-ordinated or unmatched jacket and skirt – Peep toe shoe or pump. Business casual Men – Odd jacket and trouser combinations, sports jackets and trousers or cotton chino. Larger checked shirt, no stripes and no tie. Women - Conservative skirt with tailored blouse. Tailored trousers with fashionable blouse. Open toe or closed in flat shoe.

AUSTRALIAN CRICKET HAS lost the last three Ashes series away from home, which is worse than I can ever remember. So, what are the team willing to do to prevent a fourth? In 1989, after a lean decade against England, Allan Border initiated a ‘no wives or partners on tour policy’ until the Ashes were won, or at least until the last two weeks of the tour. Although the policy divided opinions, we won with two tests to spare! The policy was continued in 1993 and 1997 – it was about working hard on your performance and camaraderie, getting the job done, then enjoying the game without so much pressure. The Australian team have unfortunately been ordinary in 2005, 2009 and 2013 by any standards and it must be arrested with passion and flair. We have the stocks and the form, and we can dominate in the batting if we lose as fewer top order wickets as possible. It’s Michael Clarke’s, Brad Haddin’s, Shane Watson’s and Chris Rogers’ last Ashes, so it’s important - I don’t mind what is sacrificed this era, but something has to be done differently this time around. Work ethic and intensity on the field will be a good place to start.

TECH SUCCESS Brisbane Girls Grammar School is leading the pack for girls in technology studies. FOR A SCHOOL that has been a leader in educating girls for 140 years, it is no surprise that Brisbane Girls Grammar School is paving the way for females pursuing careers in technology. Girls opting to continue technology studies into senior are steadily increasing. Currently 22 per cent of the School’s Year 12 cohort undertake technology studies - more than double the state average of 10 per cent. Girls Grammar alumni are receiving industry recognition and landing highlysought after jobs both nationally and internationally, such as one recent graduate who is now working in programme management for fashion brand Burberry in London and another chosen by Westpac as their Young Technologists Ambassador. Director of Technologies at Girls Grammar, Mr Brendon Thomas says it is the broad curriculum and hands-on experiences offered that is making what was traditionally a male-dominated subject so

OPEN MORNING: THURSDAY 13 AUGUST FROM 8AM FOR AN ADDRESS BY PRINCIPAL ROS CURTIS, STUDENT-LED TOURS AND MORNING TEA WITH SENIOR STAFF.

EDUCATING BRISBANE GIRLS St Margaret’s has a long-held reputation as a smaller school that makes an enormously positive impact on girls’ education. WITH ACADEMIC RESULTS well above state averages, together with an inspired extracurricular program catering for wide ranging interests, a St Margaret’s girl is motivated and enthusiastically engaged in all aspects of school life. Principal Ros Curtis says St Margaret’s smaller size means that each child is known and nurtured at a very individual level.

“Our personalised approach to learning ensures that every student is both supported and challenged to achieve her academic goals,” said Ms Curtis. “She may require additional learning support, or could be a high achieving student who would benefit from academic extension through our Flyers Program. We will recognise and understand her

Win a cooking lesson and a basket of goodies with Jerome Dalton of Dalton Hospitality.

I’VE BEEN BLESSED with two beautiful daughters but if I had a son, I’d insist he spend as much time in the kitchen as his sisters. TV chefs like Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal have done what feminism, common sense and fair play never managed - to get blokes into the kitchen. By the time my kids are grown they won’t know any different. But there are still men out there who claim they can’t cook. Either they don’t want to because they really like their burger bellies and intimate relationship with the pizza delivery despatcher or they’re afraid of failure. Well, listen up guys. Without demeaning the fine work of my kitchen compatriots, cooking is not rocket science. Mostly, it’s about following instructions from A to Z, and the return far outweighs the effort. Home cooked

is healthier for your body and your wallet, and good food isn’t just the way to a man’s heart, but a woman’s too. You don’t need a fancy arsenal of expensive tools to be a decent cook - visit a special bookshop like James Street’s Scrumptious Reads, where the well-informed owner will guide you towards beginnerfriendly cookbooks, then buy a couple of decent knives and a set of scales and you’re good to go. Start with a couple of dishes and work on refining them. But don’t beat yourself up if what you make doesn’t look exactly like it does in the recipe - there are no failures in cooking, just dishes you are yet to perfect. Think you can’t cook? Tell me why you want to learn and the most compelling reason gets a free lesson with me, plus a basket of my favourite ingredients to take home! STARS, STRIPES AND THE DEEP SOUTH Celebrate New Orleans funk and flavours at Portside’s newest restaurant NOLA, as they launch with a bang on July 4! WE MIGHT NOT want to admit that we like our ‘Merican foes, but we’re the first to admit that as Brisbane-ites we have become very friendly with their food, especially those offering dishes true to a particular region. NOLA – an acronym for ‘New Orleans Louisiana’, is celebrating its launch on Saturday, July 4 capturing the grungy yet stylish vibe of New Orleans with its live jazz music, special menus and signature drinks that will pay tribute to all things American. Herb Armstrong, grandson of jazz legend Louis Armstrong, will front a seven-piece band, bringing the smooth sounds of New Orleans funk to NOLA Portside. Guests can raise their glasses to USA’s independence with hard-to-find craft beers from American micro-breweries and whet their appetites with a wide selection of Lousiana dishes, including Po’ boys, gumbo and jambalaya. According to owner Miles Gillham the menu

has been designed to encapsulate the spirit of the Deep South and celebrate its diverse culture, including New Orleans favourites such as corn cobs, pig shins and brisket. “Diners will experience a collection of dishes that are edgy, adventurous and true to their roots and we can’t wait to introduce Brisbane to this exceptional cuisine,” Miles says. While the venue will offer New Orleans cuisine, drawing influences from the eclectic cultures that make up the south of America, including Creole, Cajun, French, African, Cuban and Spanish, it will deliver each dish with a warm Australian vibe of course. NOLA Portside will be open for lunch and dinner seven days and breakfast on weekends. NOLA PORTSIDE 7/11 PORTSIDE WHARF, HAMILTON P 3216 4999 WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/NOLAPORTSIDE

AN ELEGANT AFFAIR Gather the girls together for the ultimate Champagne High Tea experience at Customs House. MEETING FRIENDS FOR drinks can be tough on your wallet, not to mention your liver. And, now the temperature has dropped a little, it’s becoming more difficult to get out of bed for breakfast dates. I’ve been looking for a wholesome and classy alternative way to catch up with the girls – and Customs House Champagne High Tea was my answer. Perched on the edge of the Brisbane River, the restaurant terrace created the perfect setting. No matter where you’re seated, guests are presented with a gorgeous view of the heritage listed building, or the winding river and Story Bridge. Despite the grey and windy weather, we were quite comfortable thanks to the friendly staff, offering us pashminas and heaters to take the edge off the chill. There is a reason Customs House is

synonymous with excellence – from the impeccably set table, to the handcrafted desserts – the attention to detail is high. The delicate smoked salmon blinis with sour cream and salmon pearls were a favourite, as were the light and fluffy scones with cream and fresh raspberries. Our experience was surmounted by the excellent service, as the staff were generous in offering their range of tea and Veuve Cliquot Champagne. If you’re looking for a first–class, yet unpretentious experience, Customs House High Tea will offer the perfect girl’s day out. ‘WEAR’ YOUR FACE WITH PRIDE

“LET ME SHOW YOU THE TIPS AND TECHNIQUES THAT I’VE LEARNED AND APPLIED IN MY CAREER SO YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN MAKEUP ARTIST, EVERY DAY.”

The boutique studio experience by an Australian makeup artist is helping Brisbane-ites master their first impressions. WE ‘WEAR’ OUR faces everyday, so Australian makeup and hair stylist Lily Fontana has devised makeup and skincare workshops so we can invest in our features and ultimately boost our confidence! The workshops held at Lily’s Studio in Camp Hill teaches life-long skills to protect and enhance our skin and beauty to feel more confident in ourselves and around others. Lily’s successful 15 year career has seen her work on local and international films, fashion awards, editorial fashion shoots, weddings, corporate videos and even music concerts featuring Kanye West, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot. Her creative, attention to detail approach puts

her amongst some of the most respected and sought after professionals in the country and her passion for makeup and skincare extends to sharing her experiences and knowledge with others. Lily says the workshops have been designed specifically to make the art of applying makeup simple and effective. “Let me show you the tips and techniques that I’ve learned and applied in my career so you can be your own makeup artist, every day. “The workshops are ‘hands-on’, informative and take you step by step through the process of makeup application – whether it be for a ‘barely

there’, natural look, a classic day look, or a more glamorous evening look,” she says. The Lily Fontana Makeup and Skincare Workshop Studio holds group and teen workshops every month. To book workshops in July, or to create your own group with friends, head to the website. BEAT THE WINTER BULGE

FOUR TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY DURING WINTER

Keep motivated and avoid gaining those few extra kilos during the chilly season with Wesley LifeShape Clinic.

WINTER WEIGHT GAIN is very common – even in Australia where the winters are quite mild. The ‘kilo creep’ tends to be one of those blink-and-you-willmiss-it moments; one day you jump on the scales and those few kilos have seemingly appeared out of nowhere! The key to beating the winter weight gain lies in

prevention! There are easy habits that will benefit your health and weight management regardless of the temperature. Here are some of the best ways to stay healthy during the colder months. WESLEY LIFESHAPE CLINIC P 1800 567 348 WWW.WESLEYLIFESHAPE.COM.AU

• Keep moving - Maintaining your regular exercise schedule is crucial if you wish to either maintain or lose weight over the cooler months. Grab a friend for extra accountability. • Shake up the plan - It’s very common to crave comfort and hearty foods to keep you warm. Why not indulge in some home-made soups or stews that are laden with vegetables (non-starchy of course!). • Stay hydrated - Even when the mercury drops it is still important to keep up with your water intake. The cooler climate does not tend to give us the same prompts to drink, so it is important to keep your water bottle in sight. • Limit alcohol - Alcohol is also an easy way to clock up those unwanted calories that can be tricky to burn off. So, when you are putting your feet up at the end of a long day, swap the glass of red for a mug of herbal tea and leave the alcohol for those special occasions only.

IN THE DETAIL Journo, Caitlyn Spanner talks balayage, Farrah Fawcett and the importance of professionalism with Davide Di Pietro (Darv) of Tristram Hair. FORTITUDE VALLEY’S TRISTRAM Hair ticks all the boxes when it comes to the complete hair experience. With a recent refurbishment and new additions such as an in house manager and eyebrow artist, it’s no wonder this salon is quickly becoming a favourite among locals. Owner Darv, along with his team of six professional stylists have over 48 years of combined experience. Each appointment is devoted to the one client only, meaning customers won’t be moved around from one stylist to another. And it’s the attention to detail that leaves clients coming back for more. Along with balayage and the men’s fade cut,

Tristram specialises in up-styling. “Two of our stylists are masters in up-styling and book out long in advance for weddings and special events,” says Darv. Opening hours are Wednesday – Friday, 10am-9pm and Saturday, 9am-5pm. Late night opening hours three nights a weeks caters for after work appointments and in the beautifully lit salon with complimentary drinks it’s easy to see why so many in the area are making it their go-to salon. A FEMININE AFFAIR?

SKIN PROBLEMS SOLVED

PREP YOUR PELVIC FLOOR

LET’S TALK ABOUT the people who refuse to give in to eyebrow treatments because they’re afraid of what people might think. Pressure from society encourages girls to always have perfect eyebrows, but I believe it’s time to give all genders the support they need. Let’s face it; a unibrow never looks good on anyone! Lifting and shaping eyebrows doesn’t always have to be a feminine affair and can honestly make anyone look amazing. A large population of people shy away from beauty with fears that it’s not who they are, and it’s time to get rid of that idea. The Brow Bar focuses on face reading to make sure that every treatment reflects their personality and regains their empowerment, in any way that they desire. We strive to help our customers patch up previous plucking mistakes or discover inner confidence by looking absolutely great. It is for those who want to feel special and youthful on every level. Book a consultation with an Arch Angel today to help rediscover yourself!

DO YOU SUFFER from stubborn skin conditions like Acne, Psoriasis, Eczema, Keratosis Pilaris or Rosacea? Do you feel you have tried everything but nothing works for you? Most of these skin conditions don’t appear overnight. The causes of skin problems can be multi-faceted and complex and investigating both internal and external causes is the only effective solution. At Complexion Code, we take a holistic approach to get the flawless skin you dreamed of. Our skin analysis system gives a full facial analysis including diagnosis, followed by your own customised treatment plan. The skin is magnified by 50 per cent, measuring oil, dead skin cells and water level, pore and wrinkle size and pigmentation. Our Paramedical Skin Consultant will go through skin diagnosis, skin physiology, skin pathology, diet and lifestyle changes. A personally tailored solution will be developed to address your concerns and get you on your way to clear, healthy skin! For a diagnosis and assessment, call us today.

DID YOU KNOW one in three Australian women experience some form of incontinence following pregnancy and childbirth, due to a weakened pelvic floor? These problems can be cured or greatly reduced, simply and quickly, with pelvic floor exercise. Pelvic floor muscles are within your pelvis, support the internal organs and assist in controlling the flow of urine. These muscles can become weak if they have too much pressure placed on them during pregnancy, from being overweight or from high impact sport, and can also become weaker with age. Ideally, women should commence pelvic floor exercises early in their pregnancies. After childbirth, pelvic floor strengthening should continue and the muscles should be assessed to ensure they are functioning well. It is invaluable to have your pelvic floor properly assessed and have specific exercises prescribed for your condition – as with all muscles – not all pelvic floors are the same. To find out how to strengthen your pelvic floor, book a consultation.

MALE INFERTILITY: THE FACTS

WHY CHOOSE A SKIN PEEL?

MANAGING CHRONIC ILLNESS

DID YOU KNOW, one in six couples will have difficulties achieving a pregnancy? As a general rule, 30% of difficulties are female related, 30% are male related, 30% are both male and female related, while 10% remain unexplained. With recent advances, we are finding more and more of the unexplained cases are actually related to male infertility. Improving a man’s sperm count starts with a change in lifestyle. This involves decreasing toxins such as nicotine, caffeine and recreational drugs. Also, improving the diet plus adding antioxidants, vitamins and minerals goes a long way to improving sperm quality. Specialised IVF techniques such as ICSI and TESA allow men with extremely low sperm counts (including vasectomised men) to achieve pregnancies. In my practice, I bulk bill the male partners to encourage them to attend and be supportive. After all, infertility in reality is a ‘couples’ problem. If you would like to learn more, please ring the number below to schedule an appointment at Genesis Women’s Health.

CHEMICAL PEELS PROMOTE the regeneration of the skin’s surface, revealing smoother, healthier layers of skin. A chemical peel causes the upper layer or layers of the skin to breakdown by dissolving the bonds between the cells. Then in turn, as part of the skin’s normal healing process, new skin cells regenerate to replace the cells removed in the peeling process. As a result, you will notice a brighter and more radiant complexion, help with pigmentation, decongestion, refined open pores and increased hydration. Deeper peels will also induce collagen production, which will lead to tighter skin tone. Winter is the best time to resurface your skin as less sunlight and lower UV levels offers a perfect environment for your skin to heal more quickly. We are offering a fractional RF skin resurfacing in conjunction with Thermage skin tightening which results in deeper skin rejuvenation. Come and see us at Embellish You for your complimentary skin analysis and we can recommend the best treatment individualised to you skin’s needs.

TIME AND EXPERIENCE will change our partner, however, if they develop a chronic illness or injury, the relationship will be challenged. Commitment in a partnership signifies a promise in sickness and in health, meaning multiple stressors may need to be sorted. Exploring your partner’s emotions as well as your own is where you need to start. Being aware of what you are both experiencing and expressing that to each other in respectful ways, will enable the relationship to grow and support the changing dynamic. Communicating is the lifeblood of a relationship; checking-in regularly to build empathy and maintain intimacy is critical. Stating needs and what you each plan to do to satisfy your various needs will be empowering to you both. Given the demanding nature of chronic health concerns, it is imperative to monitor health—yours and theirs—and seek attention in a timely fashion. Deliberately tend to and value the relationship, and strengthen outside social connections; as great things happen when we make an effort.

TRAVEL The stunning beach right on our doorstep.

Spice Den’s Pat Prik King, a dry red curry of Wagyu beef.

LA ’MAZING ESCAPE Style’s Custom Publishing team got some R&R at Alluxia’s Casuarina beach house, La Maison Pacifique. Jane Schon reviews the retreat. A BEACHSIDE GETAWAY may not be your first thought for winter, but Alluxia’s private beach house at Casuarina was exactly what we needed after a non-stop production period. With the ocean on our doorstep, La Maison Pacifique’s vibrant, eclectic interior and lush green surrounds provided the ideal backdrop for us to kick back, gather our thoughts and let down our hair. Even though we were just ten minutes from Kingscliff and 40 minutes from Byron Bay, all we needed on the first evening was wine, cheese, a roaring fire and lots of laughs. We were in full holiday mode in no time at all. The next morning we meandered through the small strip of coastal bushland separating us from the water, until we spied an opening that led out to the beautiful, stretching Casuarina coastline; stylemagazines.com.au

we had the place all to ourselves for much of the morning, talk about luxury! Ample beach time, noses in glossy mags and exploring the surrounding towns filled up the remainder of the weekend, with a visit to Casuarina’s premier restaurant Spice Den as a definite highlight. Spice Den has a distinctly New York Soho feel thanks to the moody lighting, and the stylish fit out of dark timber and small splashes of muted colour. Everything is designed to share; you can either make your own selection or go for the banquet at $40/head. We recommend the Duck pancakes, the Pat Prik King or the Sticky barbecue ribs although it’s hard to go past anything on the menu. La Maison Pacifique was faultless for a girl’s weekend away, but we’re betting it would also be the perfect spot for family vacays. The home offers

COLOUR, CULTURE AND CREATIVITY Damien Anthony Rossi from the Great South East discovers the festival drawing thousands to the idyllic coastal paradise of Noosa.

Catherine Alcorn

NOOSA, IN WINTER? No, we’re not crazy! Winter is a beautiful time of year for Noosa, with warm days, crisp nights and an annual Arts and Cultural Festival spread across 10 spectacular days. Now recognised as one of Australia’s foremost regional cultural events, Noosa Long Weekend festival was launched in 2002 by a local group of creative visionaries wanting to blend their passions with the beautiful environment that is Noosa. The festival attracts some of the best Australian and international performers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, artists, chefs, environmentalists and commentators and this year is no different. Damien Anthony Rossi, Great South East’s entertainment reporter interviewed the festival’s director Ian Mackellar, who voiced his excitement for the exceptional lineup of artists this year including, Catherine Alcorn, Rob Mills, Johanna Allen, Melody Beck, together with ‘A’ list authors including Helen Garner and Liane Moriaty. However, he revealed a few ‘firsts’ for the festival for 2015 worth noting, including a full scale touring production of Opera Australia’s The

Magic Flute (Opera Queensland’s first full scale production on the Sunshine Coast), an Australian exclusive performance of David Williamson’s latest smash hit comedy Dream Home and an exclusive dance program with the Queensland Ballet. Damien also had the pleasure of catching up with nationally acclaimed cabaret performer and festival ambassador, Catherine Alcorn. He chats to her about premiering a new show at the festival ‘An Evening with Catherine Alcorn’ in which she performs as herself for the first time ever. The Noosa Long Weekend Festival is a not for profit festival, providing a world-class program of events at affordable and accessible prices for locals and visitors to Noosa. With more than 80 events across a large range of genres, spanning music, dance, theatre, film, food, supper clubs, cabaret, forum, literature, visual arts and free events; there is something for everyone to enjoy this July in Noosa.

KITCHEN TRICKS Want to transform your kitchen? Kitchen Trends share five must-have accessories and appliances to make yours a functional paradise!

INTEGRATION Fridges, freezers and dishwashers can be integrated into your kitchen cabinetry for that furniture-style look. This can be especially important with open floor plans, when you can see your kitchen from other rooms in your home. Keep your rubbish out of sight too, with pull-out bins - a practical solution which slides out from under your kitchen bench.

WIRE-WARE STORAGE Custom-built cabinetry means you can take advantage of every inch of your cabinet space. Incorporate pull-outs beside your oven that are perfect to house your spices, towels and trays; or pantry pull-outs that will help you de-clutter your pantry and easily access what you need.

ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES Pop-up power docks are perfect to plug into

66

that extra appliance on your island bench, and neatly disappear when you don’t need them, while LEDs make for great accent lighting and provide extra glow in your workspace. Roller shutters let you easily conceal areas while still remaining super accessible.

BUILT-IN APPLIANCES

Built-in appliances like a wall steam oven, wine fridge and even a coffee machine are often considered luxury items to add to your kitchen. But when incorporated into the overall design and their placement well considered, they can really allow you to create an efficient kitchen workspace, while providing a seamless appearance. KITCHEN TRENDS 8 EDMONDSTONE ST, NEWMARKET P 3856 6556 WWW.KITCHENTRENDS.COM.AU

DRAWERS They don’t have to be boring – get creative and maximise your space! Pantry and inner drawers are a great space maximiser, while sink drawers create additional storage where there is normally lost space around the sink. Corner drawers are great for awkward kitchen spaces, providing plenty of storage by falling deep into the corner of your bench.
