We are seeing the emergence of bold colorful tones and patterns more and more, from luxurious linens for weddings to strong accent furniture pieces for corporate events.

What features add the ‘wow’ factor?

Elements that keep your guests entertained or attract attention can really add that wow factor – think interactive food stations, wine tastings etc. Consider the first impression when your guests enter the event space and focus on the items that will visually stand out.

What are common styling errors? People commonly choose a venue that doesn’t reflect

the concept and look they are after. I always suggest that clients try to find a venue that will complement their theme, whether it’s a sophisticated, intimate or corporate event.

GET TO KNOW BRENDAN CUMMINGS Favourite place to eat in Brisbane? My local Chinese restaurant Bamboo Basket in Hamilton.

Bubbles, cocktail or beer? Nothing beats an ice cold Corona on a sunday aftenoon.

Brisbane’s Hot Tickets A local ticketing company is set on becoming Brisbane’s one-stop ticketing shop – they say ‘it’s a piece of cake.’

With a start-up client list including Victoria Park, Teneriffe Festival and the Queensland Government, Brisbane Tickets plans to take the events industry by storm, and transform the city’s event scene with their easy selfservice ticketing system.

Company owners Kristen Goldup and Jan Martin are passionate about events but know first-hand how time consuming organising them can be and that’s why their business’ ability to reduce the hassle and stress for event organisers has found them plenty of work.

As the company’s tenth ticketing site, Brisbane Tickets follows a trail of success from their other sites across Queensland and New South Wales.

“We are specialising in the food, fashion, gala and corporate markets and have loads of little tools to help, such as the ability to

collect dietary requirements, sell full tables and/or individual seats at a table and set up invitation only codes for private style events,” says Kristen.

The company caters for small gatherings of 50 to sizeable events up to 15,000, with each event saving organisers up to 20 hours of work with their ‘set and forget’ ticketing system.

This process allows the event hosts to hand over all administrative tasks regarding online pre-sales, venue sales and gate sales to Brisbane Tickets for a small fee from $1 on every sold ticket.

Benga Design owner Danny Sinclair shares the Benga success story and whether it sprouted from necessity or destiny. danny starTed his sign apprenticeship in Stafford, before moving to Andorra, Europe where he owned and operated a sign business for 10 years, which he labelled as “a very expensive hobby”. When he moved back to Australia, he set up shop on the same street it all began, Hayward Street in Stafford.

“I had no intentions of running my own business again, but eventually it just happened as the previous three companies I worked for had closed, gone bankrupt or been taken over.

We’ve now been open 11 years and I’ve never looked back. Maybe it was destiny,” Danny says.

Benga (venga in Spanish) is also a catalan word for ‘lets do it’ and is a catch cry of Danny’s children. He says when they watch the Tour de France go though Spain people yell on the side

of the road, ‘benga, benga’.

Danny says the catch cry is a motto of the business too, as he sees opportunity and fun in difficult or challenging tasks where other sign companies would see risk and disaster.

As great as most men usually are, it concerns me as a therapist and coach when I see guys who are very poor with help-seeking behaviours. That means not going to a GP, failing to get a tradie to fix stuff that’s broken or ignoring their relationships. Blokes can be masters of self-deception and avoidance, thinking or hoping that problems will miraculously disappear. Good luck with that!

I see blokes whose ego or lack of selfawareness means they are not open to the influence of friends, family, professionals or partners. I’m not suggesting guys need to see a therapist weekly, or ever really. I’m saying, without attention to self-reflection and consideration to personal growth and physical

With the renewed interest in using natural materials and recycled products, the colour palette emerging on trend is definitely towards darker, moodier colours and textures rather than the neutral whites, greys and creams seen over the last decade. The industrial look is coming out of the converted warehouse and into our homes.

The design of the space is still clean, square and minimalist but we now match this with masculine colours, textile finishes and rustic fixtures. This creates an earthy look and a ‘back to nature’ feel throughout the interior space. These hard lines are being softened by lighting and accessories that are round and more feminine.

Grainy timber, charcoal, stainless steel and copper are the colours and textures on trend.

Matte finishes for doors and cabinet fronts as well as bench tops also creates interest when using this colour palette. Matching finishes that have similar colours but are different textures also work well and will add a third dimension to the space.

I once heard an international colour expert explain how colour is another language that not everyone is necessarily fluent in. It made me question if it was a skill or a language we haven’t learnt?

Interestingly everyone makes daily colour decisions, by choosing their outfit, their car and how they paint or decorate their homes, yet people still say “I’m not artistic” or “I’m no good with picking colours and stuff”.

So if colour is the international language, how do we learn it and is it important?

In our business, dealing with colour and art everyday, we know that colour is vital. For example; the eye yearns for blue and green, the colours of nature, as much as it appreciates vivid tints of yellow and red. Choosing the right colour combinations for your home will impact the mood, the feeling, the ambience and ultimately your ability to enjoy and relax.

It’s a common misconception that eating healthily is expensive, when really all it takes is a bit of preparation and planning.
