Throughout the coming issues of this beautiful magazine, I will be discussing all the latest beauty tips and trends. Starting with – ta da – exfoliation…

As we get older (and I’m afraid I’m talking over 25 here) our skin renewal rate slows, and that means dull, sluggish and thickened skin – yuck. That’s why we need to use a non-scratching granule to exfoliate our skin, allowing our moisturisers to penetrate deeper and our skin to look fresher and yummier.

But be warned, exfoliating too often or with harsh products can be worse.

Problematic conditions such as acne will spread with too much exfoliation or if your skin is quite fine it can cause redness, sensitivity and premature aging.

The solution?

• Exfoliate one to two times a week.

• To avoid spreading bacteria, when suffering from acne or breakouts, only ever exfoliate around the pimple.

• When shopping for the correct exfoliator opt for a brand with perfectly rounded wax beads that will disintegrate very quickly. Never use coarse exfoliants containing almond shells or crushed pebbles. These can remove dead cells as well as live ones… OUCH!!

My personal favourite at-home exfoliating product is the Dr Spiller Jojoba peeling cream for $69. It hydrates as it exfoliates and defuses redness. Magic!

Keeping Up With Carole One of the most recognisable faces in the national hairdressing scene isn’t content to rest on her reputation, writes Kellie Alderman.

She’s the go-to hairdresser for Brisbane’s media and social A-listers, she’s won dozens of awards and her work has been featured in magazines around the globe.

For many that would be enough to career cruise on, but not for Corcorz salon owner Carole Haddad, she’s always looking for the next big breakthrough in hair that keeps her inspired and makes her clients come back for more.

“I love what I do, I am as passionate now as the day I started 30 years ago,” Carole says.

One of Carole’s latest passions is the new hair care range, Sachajuan. Developed by Swedish hairdressers Sacha Mitic (who worked in New York for the likes of Vogue, Elle and Glamour) and Juan Rosenlind. Their brand has become a cult favourite with beauty editors around the globe,

especially their Dark Volume Powder, which is like a dry shampoo that also covers greys and makes hair feel fresh between salon visits.

She is also an ambassador for Kaaral, an Italian organic brand of hair colour that is free of damaging chemicals like ammonia, sulphates and parabens.

“As an industry we are moving towards a way of working with hair that is a lot less chemical and a lot more natural.”

Her latest hair collection, Burlesque, has been featured in more than 60 hair magazines worldwide. She will soon direct the hair looks at the Ekka Parades and for fashion designer, 5 TIMES AUSTRALIAN KITCHEN DESIGNERS OF THE YEAR 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2013 Camilla. She’s then off to London to shoot her next collection with internationally recognised corcorz.com photographer, John Rawson.

family portraits Life jumps off the wall and into the dining room at Brisbane Italian Restaurant Tartufo.

Family is a big part of Italian culture and now Tartufo owner Tony Percuoco can feel like the whole family is coming for dinner every night thanks to Brisbane signage company Benga Designs.

Tony says he approached Danny from Benga Designs with a brief of making a mosaic mural to include his family portraits in the restaurant. But what Danny came up with was much better.

The family portraits from the 1920s to 1940s have been created as multi-textured 3D graphic prints, which can be experienced from any table in the dining room. The unusual and realistic prints from Benga Designs have been greatly received from patrons and Tony says he couldn’t be happier with the realness that has been added to his still shots.

“Put it this way… I was standing in the dining room one night and I said to my wife ‘It’s a bit like the angels are looking down on us’,” he says.

“By all means I recommend others to give it a go, it really brings family portraits to life.”

Tony says it’s something he had never seen before and Benga Designs totally blew him away with the final outcome. He is even considering getting a photograph he took reproduced into a similar styled print for use in his home.

GLASS HALF FULL is how to see the world because it improves physical and psychological wellbeing. Yet, some struggle to be optimistic because of their personality, or their explanatory style, which is how they explain life events.

The great news is that as a thinking style, it can be changed and you too can be an optimist. There are dimensions people unconsciously consider to explain a life event which influences whether they are optimistic.

First, consider whether the event is enduring or transitory; ask ‘Will time change things, or will things stay the same regardless?’ Next, consider if the situation is global — your life as a whole — or local — a reflection of only one part of life. Finally, do you think events are caused by you or an outside force?

Optimists believe positive events occur from

their efforts and as evidence other positive things will happen. Optimists see negative events as not their fault and as isolated situations that have nothing to do with other areas of their life or future events. Pessimists think the opposite.

Pessimists narrowly believe they cause negative events, that one mistake means more will happen, and mistakes in other areas of life are inevitable. They also see positive events as flukes, caused by things outside their control, and unlikely to reoccur.

An optimistic view is learned by deliberately challenging negative, self-limiting thinking and replacing it with an optimistic thought pattern. You can do it; I know you can!

The best immerging trend I saw during my resent trip to Milan for design week, was the increasing use of textured surfaces. Cold, dark mornings with freezing temperatures can discourage even the most motivated person from exercising. So how do you keep up your workout momentum?

Firstly, have your workout gear ready before you go to sleep or wear some to bed so you just need to pull on a jumper and shoes. Being half way there will take the sting out of wandering around trying to find something to wear.

You can’t complain about the heat, so getting out on your morning walk is a great option. If you can’t face the outdoors, stay inside and do some resistance training such as squats, push ups or tricep dips in front of the TV. If you can’t face the cold mornings, aim to get out for a walk in your lunch break.

No matter what type of exercise you pick, complete a good warm up and cool down to give your body time to adjust to the temperature and stretch to avoid injury.

Now in its fifth year, the Teneriffe Festival remains one of state’s most prominent events showcasing the best of Queensland’s art, culture, food, entertainment and fashion. Held along Teneriffe’s tree-lined Vernon Terrace, the event attracts more than 50,000 people each year.

The 12 hour festivities include live music and performances, fun fair attractions, baby animals and a new multicultural precinct. The popular London Laneway fashion experience and market stalls are also back, along with a foodie haven and the mandatory sheep shearing against the iconic Teneriffe woolsheds.

But possibly the most exciting addition to this year’s festival is the captivating fashion experience introduced and curated by industry experts Emerge Australia. The Emerge Australia Fashion Precinct will host

the best of the best in creative industry talent, sourced both locally and nationally.

Emerge will deliver a unique insight and interactive approach to the world of fashion across the course of seven mesmerising runway events and creative workshops.

The program encompasses accessories, shoes and bags, emerging designers, swim and resort wear, Merino wool, sustainable styling and avant-garde hairstyling and make-up.

Emerge Australia’s founder and managing director Claire Goldsworthy says Emerge is raising the bar on the way the design community collaborates and showcases, all while supporting the immense local talent in Brisbane.

“To me, fashion is about being accessible to everyone and using the language of fashion to empower others, and that’s what we’ll

see at the 2014 Teneriffe Festival’s Emerge Australia Fashion Precinct,” says Emerge Australia’s co-founder Mitchell Dempsey.

Escape to the country ‘Roughin’ it’ was not in my vocabulary until I discovered Spicers Hidden Vale. By Claire Parviz.

I had the pleasure of attending a weekend away at Spicers Hidden Vale with Mercedes-Benz for the launch of the new GLA-Class. Just an hour’s drive from Brisbane, it’s the warmest of welcomes filled with disguised treasures and surprises that lead inquisitive minds like mine on a wild goose chase. The rural weekend escape gave the word country a whole new meaning of fun, with a range of activities for guests to participate in, I never thought I would be enjoying my morning run in the wilderness with a pack of Kangaroos in tow.

I joined the Spicer’s shooting academy to put my aim to the test at their new laser clay shooting range, I definitely looked the part but wouldn’t say I have the eye of a tiger. My cracked rib did not allow me

to participate in horse riding but the rest of the crew hit the trails Brokeback mountain style! For the more adventurous, mountain bike riding became a circus act when one guest (Scott Wilkie) hit the gravel Evel Knievel style. …And if all of those activities weren’t enough, the launch of the new Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class meant we got to test out the new beast which gave this already beautiful escape to the country a lot more pizzazz.

We rounded off our day with toasty marshmallows and stories around the campfire all topped off by a country serenade and sing along with James Blundell.
