Over two big days of enchanted celebration, the 2014 MAYO Arts Festival will light up St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School with art, drama, movement and music all against a backdrop of delicious food and wine.

The festival honours the life and career of acclaimed Australian sculptor and former St Margaret’s student, Daphne Mayo. Celebrated as one of the country’s finest sculptors, Daphne was an energetic and tenacious advocate of the Arts, both at St Margaret’s and across Queensland.

In 1927 she was commissioned to sculpt the Brisbane City Hall Tympanum (the triangular decorative wall surface above the main entrance) taking over a year to complete. In 1956 she was awarded the Member of the British Empire for her outstanding contribution to the Arts.

This year’s MAYO Arts Festival welcomes

What is it like working for a stylish global brand like Mercedes-Benz?

I love working for Mercedes-Benz. The brand is so multi-faceted that it’s hard not to be inspired day in day out. In particular the Mercedes Benz slogan “The best or nothing”, really resonates with me.

Do you find it difficult working in a male dominated industry?

Not at all. I’m amazed at how fast men make decisions! It’s either yes or no, no indecisiveness, which I am guilty of. However, in saying that, even though the automotive industry is traditionally male dominated, I have never experienced anything other than support from the team I work with.

Was the company’s sponsorship of MBFF something that attracted you to the job?

I was always interested in fashion, and that definitely was an attractive aspect of the job. Being involved with and attending MBFF Brisbane for the past three years has increased my interest in fashion exponentially.

Do you think a good sense of style contributes to good business practice?

I believe a good sense of style and pride in your presentation definitely has a flowon effect to the quality of your work.

“A feast for the senses” is how I would describe this year’s international kitchen fair, EuroCucina. Held every two years in Milan, Salone del Mobile - which incorporates EuroCucina - is the greatest international showcase for furniture and interior design.

EuroCucina is the go to event for kitchen designers from all over the world. It showcases some of the world’s biggest and best designers and manufacturers, with emerging trends brought to the forefront on a grand scale.

Launched in 1974, Salone del Mobile, is an event that focuses on showcasing design ideas and inspirations that are not only functional but also elegant and innovative in the world of furniture and design.

Working around the idea that these spaces are for living, not just for looks, with designs becoming more and more about tailoring to suit our social lifestyles.

The stand out trend at this year’s fair was textures and timbers with botanical and organic elements.

The biggest trend at this year’s fair was texture with botanical elements that made you want to touch every drawer, cupboard and bench top.

Raw and rustic with an industrial look really sums up what kitchen designers and manufactures will be looking to produce in kitchen and living spaces over the next two years.

Unprocessed materials such as raw stone, grainy timber and steel were used everywhere which is something new compared to the traditional white liked by homeowners in Australia.

Also, in keeping with the current sleek minimalist look, designers and manufactures have continued

to exclude the use of handles on drawers and doors. This then allows the textures and materials being used to be the focal point in the space.

Open shelving has also returned and was being used to create a strong connection between kitchen, dining and living spaces.

Again the industrial look was prominent with the use of metal brackets and supports with glass and timber shelves.

We are really looking forward to incorporating the ideas and trends we have seen at this year’s EuroCucina in our kitchens at Sublime Architectural Interiors very soon. So stay tuned!

$50 MILLION refurb If the artists’ predictions are anything to go by, the $50 million Toowong Village modern refurbishment is set to make the longstanding inner Brisbane shopping centre virtually unrecognisable.

How would you describe your style? Tailored, athletic and sophisticated. I like simplicity with an element of difference. I definitely like to look sharp.

Where you stylish from a young age? I think I’ve always had an interest in style. I remember not being very happy when my mum tried to send me to school in a pair of shoes I thought weren’t very “stylish”. For a six year old, I’m not sure if that’s knowing style or being a brat.

On a recent Caribbean holiday, I visited the schoolyard of Usain Bolt, the village of Curtley Ambrose and the tiny towns of other great West Indian cricketers. I have always marvelled at how they did it. The answer must be people. People to spot talent, people to create opportunities for the talent to be tested, people to create and maintain facilities for competition, and people to know what to do with it next.

Well-defined pathways are crucial, however basic. It’s not only the West Indies who is now floundering; Australia isn’t as efficient as the old days either. These days it seems sport in state schools is not as important as minimising the hassles to organise it, and committed teachers who take extra time skilling up individuals are much fewer. We now have many more sports than 40 years ago, which means our talent is spread further.

This combined with decreasing numbers, it’s evident we’re on the slide. We know it, but don’t seem to want to change our kid’s current inactivity.

Bolstering up the importance we place on basic movement skills from early ages is a start; running, jumping, catching, throwing, hitting and swimming are great building blocks for life, as well as a nation. Better get going!

New mums find it impossible to find time for themselves, let alone time for the gym. However, gentle exercise is important to help maintain a healthy weight and prevent lower back pain. Here are some simple exercise tips to get you into shape.

As soon as you are able, take bub out in the pram for 30 minute walks. Whenever you find a moment, do some laps around the house or step ups. The release of endorphins will give you a surge of energy.

Don’t forget the weights! Muscle is so important for weight loss. When you’re ready, join a mum and bubs Pilates class for core strengthening and flexibility.

It’s important you and bub are comfortable and have fun! Safety first - start slow and stop if you feel unwell. Also, make sure you fill the house with nutritious, whole foods including fruit and vegies, lean meat, fish and low-fat dairy. That way, when you’re tired and hungry you won’t be tempted to reach for high energy junk foods like chips or chocolate.

Abby shares the story of her eight-year self-esteem struggle and how launching the B105 Self-Esteem Team has opened her eyes to the amount of people unhappy with themselves.

I’ve lived a very blessed life and achieved a lot – or so I’m told. The issue is, I’ve never believed it. I find it hard to truly appreciate anything I have accomplished in other people’s eyes because to me it isn’t enough. For eight years I was bulimic and abused prescription and illegal drugs.

My period stopped, my tooth enamel was eaten away by the acidity of throwing up so much and it also made my voice permanently horse. My skin was horrible, my weight fluctuated up and down by 20kg and I would only attract bad relationships. Besides counselors, I never admitted to anyone that I had an issue.

I don’t expect everyone to be able to relate but if sharing my story can help other ladies not to waste years hating themselves, then I didn’t waste those eight years. I still have insecurities and am plagued by thoughts of not being good enough but I’m working on it and know that these thoughts take a back seat to the love I get from

my husband and son.

When I shared my story on-air, I was incredibly nervous that no one would want to join me.

These nerves turned to excitement, with the amount of entries we received, then to sadness because I realised how many of us aren’t happy with ourselves.

B105 brought in a heap of experts and professionals to help myself and ten other ladies focus on improving our relationships, careers, finance and health. We even went on a retreat, attended a fabulous styling session, participated in a public body balance class and finished with an amazing dinner.

Jan Becker says it shouldn’t take a tragedy to bring women together.

Working as a registered nurse and midwife for over two decades, Jan Becker has developed a strong affinity for helping women. She has assisted in overlooked Aboriginal communities and in the raw environment of New Guinea, and has modelled herself as an inspiration to women with dreams of working in male dominated industries with her, and husband Mike’s, training company, Becker Helicopter Services. But it seems her greatest challenge began at home, when daughter Chase received a life-changing diagnosis at 14.

Chase’s battle with ovarian cancer began in 2009, bringing the two closer together than ever.

“She’d say, ‘You have to get up, you have to open the curtains and let the sun in’,” Chase says.

“Even if I hated it, she’d do it and it would be the right thing.” Jan was able to restore normality in

Chase’s life, reminding her to keep running fullspeed towards her dreams.

Thanks to her mum’s support and her strong self-confidence, Chase is moving on with life, now studying medicine. But as times are still trying for her, Jan is committed to helping Chase and many others through her work with Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation. As a board member of the not-for-profit organisation, Jan is helping better the lives of one in 22 Australian women living with gynaecological cancer through ongoing support and motivation. “Life doesn’t give you any time to breath,” she says. “You just have to find a way to keep moving forward and not let it beat you.” www.cherishfoundation.com.au

If you’re not yet acquainted, pull up a deckchair on the Eagle St boardwalk this weekend at the casual cocktail hotspot, Riverbar & Kitchen. Despite its five-star stunning location, the venue has an approachable and unpretentious vibe attracting a mixed crowd from suits to scenesters. The joint venture between Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan, along with Solotel Hospitality Management, has developed a vibrant weekend scene with a strong following, which you’ll notice at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Distinctly Queensland, the space boasts a modern, open plan layout with a 20m bar extending the length of the venue from the yacht-like interior to the outdoor courtyard shaded by colourful beach umbrellas. Organic embellishments are injected into the nautical design, such as hanging plants and bleached timber furnishings alongside large looping ropes, coloured glass fishing floats, white weatherboard and striped deckchairs. The coastal references are anything but subtle, however they are innovatively executed, steering well away from tacky

and fitting seamlessly with the stylish surroundings.

The Mediterranean share-style menu suits the atmosphere perfectly. Stand outs include, the Meze plate of assorted dips and Turkish bread, the crispy chicken wings with chipotle slaw, the spicy lamb quesadilla pizza with avocado and sour cream, and, the signature favourite, snow crab sliders with lettuce, kewpie and gherkins. Grab a jug of watermelon and mint caipiroska or pear and cider sangria or spike one of the homemade cordials – black cherry, passionfruit and coconut, or traditional lemon – with rum or vodka.

This place hits the mark for style and fare while still keeping things relaxed. You’ll find stunning river views, a buzzing atmosphere, and a menu that rivals its fine dining neighbours - all you need do is provide the company. Just be warned, you will want to work your way through the cocktail list so leave the wheels at home.

As women, we’ve all been warned about the negative effects of sitting cross-legged all day. But many people may not be aware that venous disease is common in males too. In fact a medical study found that varicose veins are present in 40% of men in comparison to 32% in women. If you think that you may have venous disease it’s recommended that you get an assessment rather than leave it until the damage is evident; often it’s easier and

POSITIVE BODY IMAGE is something we’d all love to have, yet, the reality is, often we are our own harshest critic. People appraise their body in terms of aesthetics and sexual attractiveness, typically using society, fashion, and media’s expectations as reference points.

Body image develops from your personality and experiences, and your cultural and social context. It’s normal for us all to compare our physical appearance to those around us, while simultaneously believing there is an ideal shape one should achieve. Because perception is subjective, you must remember that your selfperception of your appearance will be different from how others actually perceive you.

When people compare themselves to media images of socially-desirable body shapes, such as wanting Kylie’s bum or Jackman’s biceps, their satisfaction with themselves decreases. Conversely, 66

when people see or consider less desirable body shapes, a better self body image develops. Lots of upwards comparisons may lead to harsh selfappraisals and contribute to low self-esteem, eating disorders, self-harm, depression, and anxiety, and, in extreme cases, cosmetic surgery.

Although it’s nice to know that body image in regards to appearance becomes less stressful as we age, most of us are always dealing with this issue to some extent – whether or not we’ll be willing to admit it is another thing.

Fortunately, the media-touted body image for females has changed positively from rakeskinny to fit and naturally curvy. This means as you work at staying healthy, happiness and wellbeing will be your reward.
