At Tristram we take care of clients from beginning to end – we don’t palm off our customers to anyone else.

Focus, patience and keeping your finger on the pulse is a must.

This season I think it’s one extreme or the other - short bold bobs or organic long flowy hair for others.

Wear what complements you. I stick to well-fitted, quality clothing.

How is your style different from work to the weekend? If I’m dining out or at a club I like to look smart – collared tailored shirts, chinos and

Konichiwa Kiyomi Claire Parviz swaps Champagne for Saké at the glitter strip’s newest restaurant, Kiyomi.

It doesn’t take much for me to be talked into a weekend away on the GC so when I heard about the opening of Kiyomi Restaurant at Jupiters Hotel and Casino, I was already half way there.

The restaurant is the second venue for Chase Kijoma; a whiz-bang young chef who’s manned the kitchens of restaurants including Nobu (in lots of locations) and created the popular Sokyo in Sydney.

Chase specialises in innovative, Japanese cuisine.

His dishes are mini works of art (and they taste as good as they look!).

Accompanied by family and friends we headed in to take it for a spin. Now, I’m not known for doing anything by halves, so we decided to make it a truly authentic Japanese experience by starting with a sakeé flight of three premium sakés. Hey, you know what they say, ‘when in Rome…’

Shane, our waiter was both hilarious and helpful when it came to deciphering and suggesting menu items. A couple of my guests were Japanese virgins and way out of their depth, Shane put them completeley at ease!

Choosing a fave dish of the night would have been impossible (particularly when you’re a couple of saké flights and negronis deep) but standouts included the seared scampi with Foie Gras, apple and mizuna, the tempura Moreton Bay Bug with grapefruit, sambal mayo and vinegar.

There’s plenty of cooked stuff for those a bit ‘anti-raw’ but I’d recommend you step outside your comfort zone and just dig in. It’s one hell of a ride!

Now that the craziness of the new year has well and truly set in, I jumped at the chance to run away to Noosa for the weekend of sun, sand, sea air… and Champagne of course!

We checked into the gorgeous Seahaven Resort, located on the vibrant yet ultra-chilled Hastings Street. From the minute we walked in, we didn’t want to leave! The room was stylish and spacious with to-die-for views of crystal clear water and white sand. By the time I unpacked my shoes, outfits, bags and accessories it was time to unwind with a Champagne on the deck.

There’s nothing like waking up to the sound of crashing waves, right? We did just that on Saturday morning, before heading to the Noosa Heads Surf Club for a beautiful breakfast (and more importantly, coffee) overlooking the beach.

The central location of the Seahaven meant we could walk to everything, and we did! A power walk through the picturesque Noosa National Park was next on the agenda, followed by a chance to get my surfer chick on with a stand up paddle lesson from Boardwalk Boats. And what’s a weekend away without a bit of retail therapy? After strolling through the shops on Hastings Street we headed back to the

apartment for a bit of R&R. I prepared to be pampered with a private Swedish massage from Ripple Spa Massage, all from the comfort of the apartment. The amazing therapist worked magic on my knots and I was left feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready for pre-dinner drinks!

After a short stroll down the road we arrived at Sails Restaurant - and let me tell you - the views of the bay here are unbelievable. Aside from the stunning outlook, the service was a standout – the staff had our every need covered and more! A bottle of bubbles and a delicious platter of fresh sashimi really was the perfect way to round off the day.

I am frequently asked ‘does crossing my legs cause varicose veins’ and ‘will I get varicose veins by wearing high heels every day?’…So here are the facts.

MYTH: The act of crossing your legs does not cause varicose veins. While predisposition to other factors may cause a minimal increase of risk, if you stay healthy and active, you can avoid varicose veins forming.

FACT: Wearing high heels can increase your risk of varicose veins. High heels change a natural walking motion, shifting weight to the fore foot and toes, causing calf muscles to remain contracted with the less forceful calf muscle pump resulting in pooling venous blood in the leg.

If you constantly cross your legs or wear heels, make an effort to stretch your calf muscles, mix up your footwear and walk at least 30 minutes a day to ensure your calves are pumping blood back up the system.

Planning on getting engaged? If you answered “yes”, congratulations! You or your partner are now probably wondering “how do I choose the perfect diamond?”

It’s a necessary question and one to seek answers for if you’re unsure. For myself, when choosing a diamond I prefer to actually look at the stone itself. Having tried to purchase off lists and photographs, more often than not the end result is a disappointment, as there is no substitute for actually viewing a stone’s quality.

When viewing the stone, does it have lustre?

Does it scintillate? Is it dull looking or does it shine brightly and sparkle? Does it look milky because of florescence? Can I see any inclusions, black or white?

My final decision after viewing the stone under magnification is to place it on my hand, not necessarily in direct light and see if it has the ‘wow’ factor that sets it apart from other stones.

That’s why it is so important not to buy off a list, over the Internet or from a photograph.

Nothing replaces viewing the stone yourself and being able to compare it with others.

Buying local, seasonal produce is better for your health, supports the little guys and puts money back into the local economy.

Fruit and vegetables are packed full of vitamins and nutrients when picked at their peak and eaten soon after, but large-scale producers will often harvest produce long before it reaches its full nutritional value and then put into storage to ship it across the county undamaged, or to keep it in season year-round. The apples you bought yesterday could be up to seven months old!

Shopping at your neighbourhood farmers market means you’re more likely to be buying both local and in season. Chances are if there’s a lot of something and it’s going for super-low prices, it’s in season – better for your health and your wallet.

While you’re making your purchase, take the time to ask what’s coming into season soon – no-one knows better than the farmers themselves.

If you’re doing your research online, make sure you look for what’s in season in our own region.

HAVING A DOCTORATE doesn’t make me immune to avoiding tasks - but don’t tell anyone.

Actually, I’ve been meaning to write this column for some time, but haven’t gotten around to it!

Thankfully, success at work, a quality relationship or a balanced life is no secret, nor dependent upon a miracle. If we want to flourish, a clear vision, methodical planning, deliberate practice and openness to feedback is critical. Procrastinating leaves us feeling lazy and irresponsible; not a good look. Give procrastination the flick: • Develop realistic goals with a timeline.

• Set reminders, and regularly check progress using a diary or worksheet.

• Talk yourself out of the trap of “when I feel like it, then I’ll do it.”

• Use novel environments to increase your focus.

• Know that good enough is better than nothing.

• Don’t kid yourself that perfect is the only outcome.

• Reward yourself for being on-task.

• Expect backslides…humans are fallible.

Remember to envision big, start small, and if you do fail, do so quickly so you can adapt promptly!

We don’t just buy clothing or accessories, we buy an image. Hence why some people buy a particular label or want to spend $20,000 on a watch. Everything we adorn creates an image.

The 4 elements of image are: • Colour. Black sends the message of authority, Pink sends the message of compassion, Green sends the message you can manage money.

• Style. A Notch lapel is considered for the classic business suit and the peak lapel considered more formal.

• Fit. A perfect fit is not essential to send the right message but a good fit is a necessity. It sends the message you are sharp and on top of your game.

• Pattern. Large checks send a casual message compared with a small check pattern. The width of a stripe on a suit can separate a power suit (and the attitude that comes with that) from a classic pinstriped suit.

Why did you choose Brisbane Marriott for your reception?

We decided to have our wedding on New Year’s Eve as we wanted international guests to be able to come over for Christmas and enjoy our wedding in the one holiday. We chose the Marriott Hotel as the ballroom was a big, classy and beautiful blank canvas to style, with private access to the mezzanine floor and amazing views to watch the fireworks.

Any special touches? Welcoming 2015 as Mr and Mrs Tuumaga with fireworks on the pool deck along with our closest family and friends was spectacular! When we got back to our room there was also a chilled bottle of champagne and a sweet note from Marriott wishing us well. Perhaps the most unexpected and special touch, was something we have only recently received; our videographer managed to record each guest leaving a special message for us on the night.

Did the room reflect your style? We went for a classic clean look to suit my dress, the bridesmaids’ dresses and the boys’ suits, which perfectly matched the classy and elegant ballroom. We added a personal touch to the table numbers by numbering each table with a date, which had meaning to us – the idea was to get guests up, talking and moving around.

Your verdict? I would definitely recommend Marriott, the team were so accessible and accommodating. From our first meeting at the Marriott we walked away feeling comfortable and confident with our decision. The lead up to the wedding was stress free and the feedback from guests on the room, location, food and alcohol was amazing. It was the best day of our lives so far!

Can you describe Sway’s style? Sway is a contradiction; it’s raw and sophisticated, glamorous and industrial. We took the best of the old and merged it with the new. While the old alleyway is quite historic (once housing trams in the 1920s), Sway offers the opportunity for a modern, intimate and party atmosphere.

Where did the concept for Sway emerge?

Sway’s concept really came in three parts. We thought the Valley had grown up and was ready for a venue that echoed bars in New York and London and we wanted it to complement the Valley’s history and provide Brisbane-ites with a fantastic music venue.

What are your favourite aspects of running Sway? Sway is always evolving. I have to say launching BubbleDogs, Sway’s Friday night event has been a favourite. Gourmet hotdogs washed down with a glass of Chandon, beer or glass of vino; what a great de-stress for the working week!

Everyone has really taken to the quirky pairing.

What fashion trend would you like to see banned from Sway? Mr Google tells me Brisbane is the London of Australia, with our individual and slightly eccentric fashion style.

Based on that I guess you could say uniformity and leatherwear are on the ‘banned list’. The guys and girls at Sway are doing Brisbane’s fashion reputation proud though. Looking good people!

Whose celebrity style do you admire? This is a hard one. Brad Pitt in Oceans 11. I watched this movie again recently and other than his hair cut, his look was still great. Classic never dates.

ABBY: Beauty road-test Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all look like the Hollywood stars without the price tag of expensive beauty treatments? Well, with Easter (the DIY time of year) just around the corner, I thought I would road-test some DIY beauty treatments and see if they result in red carpet worthy skin!

Coconut oil: Try giving yourself an all over body massage with the oil for five minutes. Rinse off in a cold shower and then pat dry. Yum! Who doesn’t love the smell of coconut?

STAV: Men and make-up Let’s face it ladies - you aren’t doing your face for the benefit of men and if you are, it’s worth a rethink, as we are pretty much oblivious to the goings ons in the 30 to 45 minutes it takes a lady to get ready.

The one big lie about men and make-up, however, is that we prefer no make-up at all – aka the “natural” look. That only applies if you “naturally” look like Megan Fox when you aren’t wearing any make up. That

said, the less noticeable the make-up looks, the better.

Here are some standard dos and don’ts most men would agree on: Don’t use too much eyeliner.

• Do try and shorten your application time.

• Don’t wait for us to comment on your makeup.

Do, ABOVE ALL, remember we will find you beautiful no matter how much, or how little, makeup you have on.

Lemon-cucumber whitener: Mix together the juice of two lemons and one cucumber and apply to areas where there are dark pigments and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. The result: It feels quite drying whilst on but once it was rinsed off my skin looked instantly better.

Caster Sugar: Apply to damp skin, leave on for 15 minutes then rinse. The result: I’m not sure substituting the caster sugar for brown sugar was the right thing to do and I got distracted and made a coffee while the sugar bowl was out. Apparently after a few weeks you will see improvements.

Hormones and headaches Style chats with headache and migraine clinician Bertrand Doeuk about a monthly migraine some women suffer from.

Reaching for the heat pack, opting for a dark and quiet room, all with chocolate in hand? When it’s that time of month, many women suffer varying Bertrand symptoms. However, Doeuk if you notice migraines occurring every time you have your period, then you are not alone. In fact you may be one of the 50 per cent of female migraineurs who suffer from intense migraines during the menstrual cycle.

Migraines can occur a few days before or after the period commences, or on the exact day.

Symptoms usually last around three days, and can bring crippling pain, often felt on one side of

the face, head or neck region. Other symptoms such as nausea, dizziness and visual disturbances, such as aura symptoms can also occur.

Brisbane Headache and Migraine clinic’s Clinician Bertrand Douek says there are 3 million migraine sufferers expected within Australia and a lot of misconception around the medical jargon used to describe the cause of menstrual migraines.

“The misconception is practitioners believe the cause is due to hormonal imbalances, however new research reveals that there are in fact no hormonal imbalances, yet practitioners continue to medically suppress the hormonal levels in an attempt to stop their symptoms, which often do not work,” Bertrand says.

Bertrand explains the cause is actually due to a sensitised brainstem and he has helped

stop 90 to 95 per cent of his patients from having menstrual migraines. He advises to stay away from medications that suppress hormones, as well as invasive surgery.
