Grab a bite or a pick-me-up and take in the quaint surrounds of exposed brick, coloured glass, timber and fabric detailing.

diamonds are forever Win a 1/2 CT round brilliant cut diamond and chain personally selected and crafted by Stuart Wallace Bishop valued at $2,678! Few companies these days can claim to have been owned and managed by the same family for more than 90 years. But, Wallace Bishop has been doing so, perfecting diamonds, since 1917. From their family to yours... a 1/2 CT round brilliant cut diamond and chain personally selected and crafted by Stuart Wallace Bishop. The fourth generation Bishop’s first love was surprisingly not diamonds, in fact, it was sailing. But Stuart’s love for the precious gem blossomed soon after. Working in the Wallace Bishop shop since the age of 17, it wasn’t long ‘til he was running the family workshop. His father could see Stuart’s passion for diamonds and jewellery design, so he sent him off to America to the Gemological Institute to learn all about diamonds. This is where his love and passion for the

PHENOMENAL FIFTY Clinical Psychologist Dr John Barletta discloses his big birthday. ELLE MACPHERSON AND I are 50 this month! Yes, hard to believe, but true. When I was an adolescent, 50 seemed an ancient age I could barely conceive reaching. Now that it’s here, I am grateful for what I have, wonder about where the years went, and consider whether where I am is okay. No, I’m not experiencing a mid-life crisis! I had one of those ages ago, as my wife would attest, but I am reviewing what I want for the rest of my life. My life has been one lived in the service of others, which is a blessing because many people having mid-life issues wonder about their legacy. Professionally, I have always had a significant focus for the meaning of life around improving the wellbeing of others. Now my attention turns to the challenges, relationships, and fun I want

to have in my life so that it continues to flourish. A patient recently declared; growing older is good fortune, but behaving like you’re old is a poor choice indeed. My plan is to work at being tolerant, mindful, love unconditionally, seek novel experiences (but avoid another red convertible), reflect often, grow psychologically and behave confidently. Oh - and to jog, read and floss regularly (not simultaneously). I realise the inevitability of my mortality, so creating a better world for future generations, by continuing to help others, is at the forefront of my mind. BTW, although Elle Macpherson has no idea who I am, I still wish her a very happy 50th! DR JOHN BARLETTA, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST LEVEL 1, SUITE 2, 3 DAYS RD, GRANGE P 3356 4400 WWW.JOHNBARLETTA.COM

Slow down, you move too fast How does Bridget tackle property negotiations? I’m often asked about my negotiation tactics when selling real estate. How do I get people to increase their offers? How do I get the best prices for my sellers? In the current market, no longer are we talking about whether or not a property will sell, we are discussing what price it will sell for. Here are my tips for getting the best result in a property negotiation: Slow down! Our most precious commodity is time – the person who wins the negotiation is often the one with the most of it. Sometimes waiting is the best advice; your agent should be able to work out when to jump and when to hold back in a negotiation. We’ve all heard the saying we have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice 16

as much as we speak – in negotiations it is so easy to forget this. Real Estate Agents are notorious for being chatterboxes, so when selling your home it is really important that you choose an agent not only with the ‘gift of the gab’ but also the love of listening. More buyers = more competition = higher price. I’ll be honest – at the moment, anyone can sell your property, and there are so many buyers out there that you will probably get a result, but will you get the best result? The right agent and the right marketing can make all the difference – not just in achieving a sale, but also in achieving the best price. Have a wonderful March! Tom Mitchell | 27 Channel Nine Sports Reporter and Presenter

Channel Nine’s Tom Mitchell gives Style the exclusive scoop on how to achieve the gentleman look.

“my on-camera style is ron burgundy meets james bond – if classy looks could kill.”

How would you describe your on-camera style? Ron Burgundy meets James Bond – if classy looks could kill. Has your style changed since you started in Broadcast? Most definitely – from slapping on whatever was clean at the last minute, to now having an array of dry-cleaned shirts and ties hanging in the sports department to choose from when news breaks. What’s your fashion mantra? “Never underestimate the power of a good suit.” Whose celebrity style do you admire? Leonardo Dicaprio, Bradley Cooper and David Beckham. Your most indulgent fashion purchase? Spring Racing tailored suit with shirt/tie combo, or my new RM’s – can’t beat a good pair of RM’s. What fashion trend will you never try? Baggy jeans – seriously

lads, it doesn’t look good. What do you think is the most important thing for women when it comes to style? Love your body first, everything else will follow. Do you prefer... Boxers or briefs? Briefs – Bonds undies all the way. Smart suits or cool casual? Smart suits. Short back and sides or a little scruffy? When I can’t be bothered/ weekend I scruff it up. All other times it’s short back and sides. Where can we find you... On a Sunday morning? At work reading the back page of the paper, sipping on coffee… the joys of being a sports journo. On a Saturday night? At home on the couch watching sport – again, the joys of my job. On your next holiday? The UK and southern France; Wimbledon and Le Tour here I come.

Fashion Suit jacket $569, Slim pants $229, saba.com.au; French cuff shirt $79.95, Geometric floral tie $59.95, countryroad.com.au; Major lace up dress shoes $149.95, tarocash.com.au

Housewife heaven Kellie Alderman spoke with the Real Housewives of Melbourne about on-air feuds, fashion and living the luxury lifestyle. With a backdrop of monied Melbourne, Toorak mansions, sports cars and designer shopping destinations, the new reality show, Real Housewives of Melbourne, is must-see TV. While the show’s setting might be out of reach for most of us, the day-today difficulties, drama, love and life are the same for women everywhere and these women certainly have their share of drama. We got to meet Janet, the 55-year-old recently separated property developer, and Jackie, the firebrand psychic and wife of Silverchair rocker, Ben Gillies. “Janet will be a real inspiration,” says Jackie. “So many women will connect with her story of being separated, working and managing her family and business. So many women stay with their man or are afraid to leave and maybe she will be an inspiration to them.”

22

Jackie, who moved from her hometown of Newcastle in New South Wales to take up her role on the show, and Janet, a former Gympie girl who started her property career in Brisbane, have become firm friends. “We are best friends, we always sit together and want to do things together. The other girls don’t like that very much!,” Janet laughs, and you get the feeling she doesn’t really care what they think. So how will they handle their newfound fame? “I’m lucky enough to be with someone who is really down-to-earth, I’m not the celebrity, my husband is. I’m just doing a show, I’m being myself,” Jackie said. Real Housewives of Melbourne airs on Sundays at 8.30pm on Arena TV.

totally rawsome After her busy lifestyle took a toll, Amanda Brocket healed herself by going raw. There’s no denying we’re smack bang in the middle of a major health craze. One of the most common statements being thrown around is about the many myths and misinformation surrounding food, with some health experts coming out against the traditional food pyramid. A supporter of this notion is raw food advocate, Amanda Brocket, who after battling Systemic Candida for five years cured herself by approaching food in a new way. She had tried anti-candida dieting and was seeing a Naturopath religiously, but found she would reach a plateau and not get any better – until she discovered raw. Amanda changed to a diet of plant-based foods in their whole, unprocessed form - free from chemicals, additives, wheat, dairy and refined sugar,

24

with nothing heated over 44 degrees. Even though her family most likely think she’s “growing armpit hair as we speak”, Amanda believes her Raw Food Kitchen offers real alternatives for people who have been on the doctor and diet yo-yo. Started as a way for Amanda to share the power of raw, the goal of the Raw Food Kitchen is to teach and inspire others to heal their bodies through live and online workshops, transformational programs, coaching, eBooks and retreats. Amanda says since going raw she feels happier and more alive everyday. She says there’s no “one size fits all approach” but “for anyone wanting to recover from health issues, either juicing or going raw for a period of time is beneficial”. therawfoodkitchen.com.au

BEFORE

Bay-dreaming Kim Duffin explains how this bayside home reached its full potential with a stunning Sublime modernisation. Three aspects rested at the heart of this transformation: modernisation, integration, and functionality. I was working with a beautiful double-story home with remarkable views out to Moreton Bay that were best captured from the kitchen. The owners start their day watching the sun rise over the bay while eating breakfast in the kitchen, where all the planning, preparation and execution of their activities occur, so this was an integral element to consider for the redesign. The clients are also a professional couple that enjoy socialising and place high importance on entertaining at home. They knew what they wanted: to embark on a major modernisation that incorporated flow between living spaces to enhance their lifestyle. The execution of this desire is inarguably in the details. Ultimately, the aim of the transformation was to better utilise space, increase flow and make the most out of the house’s positioning to highlight its focal areas. A functional layout for both dayto-day activities and entertaining was integral throughout planning, design, and execution. So how best to implement these aspects? stylemagazines.com.au

Sharp, clean lines and a level of maturity were the client’s desired objectives in this new space. They had chosen very distinctive cooking appliances in the Gaggenau oven and steam oven and it was important that these appliances married well with the overall look and feel of the kitchen. Therefore, the choice was made to integrate the other key appliances. I decided that neutral dateless tones worked well into the clean lines, modernisation of other rooms, and seamless integration that the design required. The clients also wanted accented lighting, but weren’t sure how to best execute this. The task lighting that you see pictured places emphasis on the kitchen and pantry, which enhances the design details and also adds a funky, accented ‘Andy Warhol’ vibe (while being environmentally friendly, too). The strong lines created by the ‘boxed’ style again helps create clean, simple lines. The overall transformation of this home has greatly enhanced the lifestyle of its occupants. They now have a space that is efficient, sophisticated and suited to their unique needs while entertaining in style.

Transforming spaces into functional works of art is what Kim Duffin does best.

Uncovering the Brisbane Look Fashion heavyweights come together to show Australia Brisbane has more to offer than we thought. Fashion has taken a back seat in Brisbane for years. Perhaps trying to compete with the southern capitals seemed too hard a task. But, in not trying to overtake the Australian fashion scene, it seems Brisbane has developed a chic identity we never knew we had. Long-time fan of Brisbane fashion, best-selling author and former editor of Vogue, Kirstie Clements, has taken the reigns of a new documentary showcasing this very idea. Uncovering the Brisbane Look breaks down ‘unstylish’ preconceptions, and aims to magnify the humble attitudes, and ‘confidence and curiosity’ of our ‘dynamic’ city. “There seems to be uniqueness [in Brisbane],” says Kirstie. “There’s a lot of colour and originality in the way people dress. It was wonderful to find style in Brisbane was about much more than just fashion and what they wore.”

FASHION accessories

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Hailey Bartholomew, the documentary has gathered insights and contributions from some of the biggest names in Australian fashion – most of who started right here in Brisbane. Hailey says she’s inspired by what she found. “When I started to make this film, I told my friends I was working on a doco about fashion in Brisbane. They said, ‘Oh is it two minutes long?’ because this is the attitude in Brisbane! But there’s so much happening, it’s so exciting.” The public launch of the documentary will take place on Monday March 3 at the Cinema Lounge, QueensPlaza, as the centre celebrates the Brisbane look for Autumn/Winter 2014. The event countdown Australian Skin Clinics’ Myer Centre Manager, Renee Davidson, shares her advice on flawless skin and rejuvenation in time for your next event. Whether you are counting down to a wedding, anniversary, birthday or reunion, some pre-planning can make all the difference to how you look and feel on the day. The first step is to devise your treatment and skincare plan with a qualified technician at a complimentary consultation, where you can discuss your skin concerns, desired results, timeframes and budget. A tailored home-maintenance program of Skinstitut skincare is also recommended. Not only does this prepare your skin for treatment, but will also support your skin during your treatment plan to ensure the best results possible. Three to six months out from your event, a course of three fractional radio frequency/dermal stamping treatments, once a month, is ideal to rejuvenate the skin and reduce the appearance of open pores, fine

lines, poor or dull skin tone, acne and acne scarring and redness. This will also stimulate natural collagen and elastin leaving you with firmer skin and lasting results. If your concern is with unwanted pigmentation, laser treatment will even out your complexion, targeting freckles, brown patches, age spots and blemishes caused by acne, as well as rosacea and general redness. Lastly, one month prior to your event is the ideal time for cosmetic injectable treatments to reduce facial lines and wrinkles, add volume, improve facial contours and reduce the appearance of ageing and deep lines. After a self-proclaimed ‘year from hell’ in 2006, Stephanie Gill decided to take a big risk. “I was a manager in the public sector working with an executive coach to help navigate an organisational restructure,” she says. “At the time I had two miscarriages, a shoulder reconstruction and went through painful rehabilitation. I felt unsupported at work as key management figures left leaving me to implement an unworkable restructure,” she says. She was diagnosed with depression, and deciding not to return to work, explored ‘what’s next’ with her executive coach. “In the middle of a session one day I sat upright and said, “I think I want to do what you do – how do I get qualified?” She started training immediately,

and since then has helped busy people connect to their personal and professional ‘mojo’ through workshops, coaching and resources, so that they can lead balanced, fulfilling lives and careers. Seven years on, Stephanie’s company Focussed Fish Coaching and Facilitation continues to assist individuals, including Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist, Susie O’Neill post-swimming career. Her top tip is to take each day at a time, offering a three-point plan: “Start your day with something that energises and grounds you. In the middle of the day – stop, breathe and refocus on just being, rather than doing. Before bed, review what went well and what you appreciate, and set an intention for the next day. Your subconscious mind will be working on creating that as you sleep!” www.focussedfish.com.au

Fab Refurb Myer Centre redo their digs: CBD eating just got a little brighter. Food is rooted into every culture as a way to come together. Breaking bread over the breakfast, lunch or dinner table provides opportunities for fundamental human interactions. No matter how basic, this act is essential for building relationships and community. So it’s wonderful to see landmarks centred on this meeting place are getting a little TLC. The most recent face-lift goes to the Myer Centre food court. Next time you’re swiping the plastic take a pit stop in the newly refurbished dining area dreamed up by Brisbane architects, Arkhefield. Known for their contemporary and cutting edge designs, including waterfront restaurant, Stokehouse, Arkhefield have modernised the once tired food court adding two new vertical green walls, spanning a total of 43 square metres. Myer Centre contrasted the green space by adding a large format digital screen creating a fresh urban atmosphere. The retail giant also sought the contribution of local industrial designers luxxbox, who custom-designed and locally manufactured a number of new furniture pieces. Jason Bird, Founder of luxxbox, says “It’s wonderful to see one of the city’s iconic landmarks supporting Brisbane businesses and incorporating local design.” The relaxed design process allowed the use of unconventional materials and production techniques creating a distinctive style statement. The eclectic aesthetic includes monochrome chairs with scattered pops of red and yellow, and copper dome and street-type lighting overhead. Escape to this refreshed urban space; one of many new public spaces Brisbanites have to enjoy.

Feeling overwhelmed? With today’s busy lifestyle, it doesn’t take too long to feel completely zonked. Pressures of work, partners, children’s commitments, friends and your general domestic existence take their toll. It is important to remember the advice given on planes, “in case of an emergency put the oxygen mask on yourself first then take care of others”. This is true in your everyday life; you must take care of your own wellbeing in order to take care of others and create that all important balance. Take time to review the amount of things you’ve said “yes” to and perhaps replace them in future with a “no”. This will instantly create some much-needed breathing space. Be savvy enough to ask for help from others. The days of being a proud 1950s housewife are over, it is okay to ask your sisterhood (or brotherhood) for help when you need it. If you don’t have a network of support there are a multitude of professional services out there that are able to help.

The B105 wrap up

Abby: The big day

The B105 team chat about the before and after’s of married life and how to keep the flame burning.

As a marriage celebrant, Abby’s an expert on weddings. Here are a few tips to help keep a lid on the stress:

The Budget If you don’t have Kim Kardashian’s bank balance, you need to decide how much to spend and stick to it. If money is tight, consider a longer engagement to save.

Stav: Weekend with the fam

Leave Bridezilla for TV

Now Stav is a parent, breakfast is no longer half a kebab left over from the night before. Here are his fav family brekkie spots:

Hansel and Gretel, Gaythorne

Most brides and grooms look at wedding preparation very differently – so don’t be offended. I love organising events but it’s my husband’s worst nightmare. He did however plan the honeymoon; Vegas was very romantic…

Small, friendly and cosy. The lumberjack breakfast will set you up for whatever your day has in store!

The Bridal Party If the bridesmaids are paying for their dresses, don’t select an expensive designer and allow them to have a say in what they wear. Offer to pay for hair, makeup or shoes, and small gifts are a nice touch!

THE BURROW, WEST END If you’re still pretending you’re hip and cool, then The Burrow at West End is the place for you! I love this place, mainly for the inventive names on the menu.

Do a run sheet

PAPA JACKS, FORTITUDE VALLEY

You may think a run sheet for your special day is unromantic and controlling but in the long run it will save you!

Your travelling days are over so why not head to a restaurant/bar that makes you feel like you’re overseas? Papa Jack’s in Fortitude Valley has a delicious New Orleans inspired menu and theme, delicious!

Dining Out the Healthy Way

choosing the best finish

Our skin’s colour is due to melanin; a pigment produced in the skins epidermis to protect us from the sun’s cancer causing ultraviolet (UV) rays. We tan as a result of our body’s natural defense mechanisms towards specific rays called UVA and UVB. Darker-skinned people produce more and larger melanin particles and are generally native to tropical and sunnier regions. Fair skin is an adaptation found in people from northern latitudes where solar rays are weaker. The benefits of dark skin are outweighed by the need for bone strengthening vitamin D, produced through exposure to UV rays. Here in Australia, the majority of the population is of northern-European descent and unfortunately has the world’s highest rate of skin cancer. This accounts for more than 80 percent of all cancers diagnosed globally each year. These statistics make it essential to revise, heal and protect our skin. Thankfully technology advancements have provided outstanding preventative measures, principals and treatments that assist in reducing these daunting numbers.

With large portions and high fat foods on many restaurant menus, it can be difficult to make healthy choices when dining out. But you don’t have to give up the joy of going out with friends! Here are my practical tips for eating out. • Choose restaurants that offer options such as grilled fish or chicken, salads and pasta with tomato-based sauces. • Request a glass of water upon being seated instead of an alcoholic drink. • Order first to maintain your resolve and avoid discussing the menu with others. • Refuse side orders if you don’t want them. If they appear on your plate you’re likely to eat them mindlessly. • Avoid restaurants with buffets - it’s hard to resist the variety of foods on offer. • Have a healthy snack before leaving home so you don’t arrive ravenous. • Eat slowly to enjoy your meal and focus on non-food related pleasures such as the conversations you are having.

When choosing between different types of materials, there are the three main considerations: aesthetics, cost and benefit. Flooring, along with vanity and kitchen benchtops are often at the heart of the ‘choice’ conundrum. When contemplating using exotic materials such as marble, you must weigh up the aesthetic appeal against the cost. As a consideration, the stone may be featured to give impact to a space, such as an island bench in a kitchen, while the vanity tops could be engineered stone to save cost. Another choice is between timber floors and tiles. Generally speaking, timber floors exude a feeling of warmth and luxury, whereas tiles are selected not only for their aesthetic appeal, but also for their durability and practicality. Ensure you employ the services of a person who has proven ability in interior design and ask to view examples of their work. Enjoy the design and construction journey.

Maximising Space, Minimising Impact

renovating choices – part 1

pre & post natal health

“Butler’s pantry” is a buzzword that is definitely on clients’ wish lists; everyone wants a space where everything is organised and in its place. What most people don’t realise is that it’s not a space saver; the typical butler’s pantry is designed to have plenty of room to move. Upgrading to a scullery (just add a sink and dishwasher to the pantry) means you really need some space to do this successfully. Over the last few years I have been evolving the traditional butler’s pantry into appliance pantries, walk-in pantries and appliance cupboards. You can still get the look and feel of the butler’s pantry while working within a typical kitchen footprint using items such as flush floor track systems to keep the transition seamless. Then with just the slide of a lightweight door, you can go from preparing the kids toasted sandwiches to serving the girls an espresso with their high tea. With clever design and innovative manufacturing techniques you can include the mostwanted features of a butler’s pantry without losing valuable space in adjoining areas.

As we’ve seen with the popularity of Channel 9’s The Block - renovating is a great way to improve your home while also adding value at the same time. In determining your choices and budget for your renovation, it’s important to consider a few questions: How much will it cost to do the work and how much will it add to the price of your home? How long will the renovations take? Do you have the time to project manage it yourself or should you get some help? There are a few options to consider, I’m going to focus on this over my next two columns. If your property is old, unrestored and in need of a complete makeover, it’s not necessary to change that. There’s a huge amount of appeal in a ‘fixer-upper’ or ‘renovator’s delight’. People are often very keen to find a property they can renovate exactly to their own tastes. Speak to a trusted agent and see what they think – my bet is they’ll say you should sell as is.

Throughout pregnancy and after having a baby, your body undergoes many changes, which means taking care of yourself is very important. Pilates has become a popular form of exercise for pre and post-natal women due to its focus on core strength and pelvic floor strength as well as overall body toning, flexibility and mobility. The exercises included in our pregnancy pilates aim to assist in managing common ailments experienced during pregnancy, preparing your body for delivery, and helping with recovery after your baby is born. At TPS Health our physiotherapists understand that pregnancy and labour is a completely individual experience, and aim to tailor our classes to suit any fitness level, previous injuries or pain that you may be experiencing. The pregnancy classes will provide a challenge, yet they are gentle enough to perform through the entirety of your second and third trimesters. Once baby has arrived, our Mums & Bubs classes offer a safe, sociable environment to begin your recovery and rebuild your fitness strength!

Tips to increase metabolism

Life after the dream job

A recent article by the BBC has shown that the lifespan of companies has fallen by more than 50 years in the last century, from 67 years in the 1920s to just 15 years today. With a wave of movement toward reengagement and rediscovery of brands, as highlighted in the new $2.3 million tourism campaign “Give me Brisbane Any Day” for the Brisbane region, clients ask how they can better connect and add value to their transactions. Through market involvement, we have seen the successful results of brand renewal, with opportunities reinvigorating relationships. Best results are achieved with a review of customer touch points, and a refresh of activities with innovative new pieces that engage and create an enduring impression. My advice is to appoint a branding partner to ensure your message and quality remain consistent. Constant brand evolution is necessary to remain relevant and increase company lifespan beyond 15 years. The global market moves quickly, keep up!

Incidental exercise: This is probably the easiest way to burn more calories and boost your metabolism every day. The problem is modern technology means we are doing less of it! Here are a few simple changes you could make to your daily routine: • Always take the stairs (not just when you feel motivated to); • Every 30 mins stand up and walk the length of the house; • Stand up on public transport or whenever you’re on the phone; • Restrict your TV viewing to 30 mins a day and get out in the fresh air and walk instead.

I was surprised when English cricketer Johnathan Trott left the Australian tour early. He was experiencing maybe his first run of poor‑form, despite being well remunerated and part of a winning team. He worked with his coaches tirelessly to get his game in order but obviously didn’t think he could. High-paid sportspeople have many advantages over the regular Joe. But with many facets of their careers to get right, work can often consume them. Physical, mental, technical, tactical and social areas all need to be perfected. Because of this, planning ventures after the dream can often be a challenge. They need to be relevant to your personality or something you like. Ian Thorpe’s recent admissions to battles with booze and depression don’t surprise me. He is still so young and has been through so much. It’s been go, go, go which leaves no time to admit some post-swimming endeavors mightn’t have been his cup of tea. Everyone’s fingers are crossed that this period in his life can be used constructively. I hope he finds camaraderie, focus, travel and money. Planning and executing was all he did in the pool, I hope he can do that again in society.

Build muscle: Just by having more lean muscle on your body, you are going to burn more calories each day. Eat small and frequent meals: A good rule of thumb is to eat roughly every three hours. Plan your eating routine and always carry healthy snacks with you – this way you’re less likely to be tempted by rubbish food. www.sallybrouwerfitness.com.au

Bachelor Profile Australian Olympian, Rhys Howden, hopes to someday surf the pipeline in Hawaii – good thing he can swim! Does being an Olympian help you in the dating game? I would like to say yes, but no it actually hasn’t. Ever dropped it into conversation when chatting up a girl? I prefer not to as I’d rather them get to know me for me, not for something I have achieved. However, I would be lying if I said I’ve never dropped it. Your worst habit? Always having my shirt off. What’s the worst thing a girl could do on a first date? Be on her phone. What’s been your greatest achievement? My greatest achievement would be making

two Olympic games, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Also, having the honour of being named as the current captain for the Australian sharks team and leading them into Rio 2016. What do you like to do on your day off? Relax somewhere, go to the beach, and hang out with friends and family. The best advice you’ve ever been given? Don’t die wondering. Where do you see yourself in five years? I take things as they come but I would like to own a house and have a partner to share it with.

Inside the Musgrave Muse, the Red Hill Buzz Office.

Building a Buzz Buzz Offices – the bee’s knees of boutique office rentals in Brisbane’s inner city. Rob Deane always had an interest in property. Since the age of 17 his love of creative design and construction hasn’t wavered. But, after doing his time in commercial real estate, Rob decided the ordinary was not for him. So after further study in Development and Project Management at QUT, Rob started work with the Developer who kick started his creative career in property development. Now, the director of his own firm, Rob is finally in his element. His latest venture, Buzz Offices, satisfies a growing demand for boutique inner city office space, providing flexible, serviced office solutions across three bustling Brisbane precincts; Red Hill, Spring Hill and Paddington. Rob understands small or new businesses may not have a ton of spare cash lying around, so he tries to cater for savvy spenders who also desire stylish digs. stylemagazines.com.au

i love the creative aspect of identifying an opportunity and coming up with a scheme.

“We cater for the small one to five person businesses that need flexibility, scope to grow or scope to contract.” Robert says his company can remove the risk for start-up or small businesses looking to develop a space of their own. “Anyone can develop property but mistakes can be very costly,” he says. “I love the creative aspect of identifying an opportunity and coming up with a scheme. “Musgrave Muse, where one of the Buzz Offices is located, was perfect for me. [It] allowed me to work on a heritage building; to maintain it’s quirky authenticity through to developing the rear parcel into modern commercial offices.” Buzz Offices Paddington – Spring Hill – Red Hill P 0412 679 285 www.buzzoffices.com.au

Meteoric Rise

Expo of the year

After working for five years as a successful debt collector, New Zealand born Gold Coast resident Paora Taukamo decided to dip his toes in a new business venture. “Initially it started as a joke to auction myself on eBay for household chores, and then thought there was the potential for something bigger,” Paora laughs. He set about building a team of male topless waiters, with the charisma, easy nature and athletic physiques required to add the wow factor. In just 12 months, the group has established themselves as the ‘gentlemen’ of the south east entertainment industry, offering their professional services to charity functions, birthday/hens parties and corporate events.

Styled by Bobbi With an eye for detail and global trends, Bobbi Belle is one to know in the styling game. Bobbi instinctively knows great style. Her love was ignited as a little girl, playing dress up with her mother’s wardrobe. She began to unleash her talents during her ten-year involvement in ballroom dancing, where she developed a passion for handmade design, embellishments and high-voltage glamour. Now, Bobbi’s unique south-side boutique provides her with an avenue to explore a more relaxed styling direction, one that has earned her a stellar reputation. This success led to the launch of a private styling studio within her Coorparoo store. Bobbi says her studio is perfect for anyone who desires exceptional service. She provides “premium economy dressing” at reasonable prices sitting comfortably between “budget and blowout”. With a distinctively New York vibe, the studio evolved when Bobbi found

bobbi’s picks the popularity of the store was hindering her oneon-one time with regular customers. “I was unable to provide undivided attention to clients who were specifically coming back to me time and time again,” she says. “I like [time] to connect with [them] and really get to know what they like and don’t like.” It’s this quality that really sets her apart from other stylists. Bobbi teaches her clients how to work their best assets, so they can style themselves without always needing her help. She says understanding colour frequencies and listening to feedback are key elements when developing personal style. “It’s all about bringing the most out in a woman.” She says if she can achieve that, her “job is done”. some ‘pearls’ from the expert Mark Seddon of Girls Love Pearls gives an illuminating insight into which pearl strands go with which occasions. Choker: 16” or shorter Possibly the most classic of strand lengths, the choker is also the most versatile. Pair it with daily work wear or elegant formalwear for a stylish complement to your neckline. Princess: 16” to 18” Best worn with either high or plunging necklines. The Princess necklace is the most common length choice and is considered a classic length and style – perfect for pendants and an excellent choice when unsure which strand length is most suitable. Matinee: 20” to 24” The Matinee length is a perfect choice to accent semi-formal attire. Matinee strands add flawless flair to a business dress and complement a bare décolletage. Opera: 30” to 36” Opera strands are called so because they are an

excellent choice for formal occasions. Versatile in look and in length, Opera pearls can be worn long with one strand or doubled over for a shorter finish. It can even be knotted for a very vintage look. This is one of the most versatile and stylish strand lengths to choose from. Rope and Bib: 36” or longer This is a truly luxurious length that evokes sensuality, particularly when draped down the back of a backless dress. The Rope or Bib length can be knotted like the Opera strand and can even be tripled to mimic a choker style. This is a statement ‘flapper’ style and is an elegantly distinctive strand. Suit Up

At only 17, Ryan’s brother Andre has been a key player in the brand’s development.

23 year old, Ryan Fisher, seamlessly blends style and practicality, taking menswear in a new direction. The priorities of a university student generally consist of drinking, socialising and perhaps attending a lecture or two. Of course this is a large generalisation, but for the majority of students setting up a business would not be on their immediate “To-Do” list. That is, unless you’re Ryan Fisher. Operating from the theory “life is what you make of it”, Law and Commerce student Ryan decided to set up his own suiting business, Black Jacket Suiting. After travelling to the fashion capitals of the world and working in menswear for six years, Ryan was able to recognise the inefficiencies within the Brisbane market. “Less than five percent of males can walk in and out of a suit store with a perfectly fitted product,” he says. With this in mind, Ryan aims to deliver personal styling and high-end clothing to suit every customer at a quarter of his competitors’ price. After starting alone, Ryan is now working with younger brother, Andre, whom Ryan says has been

instrumental in his involvement as co-owner and marketing executive. Understanding that the majority of his clientele would be time poor, the guys refined their services so that customers only need to visit Black Jacket Suiting for an initial consultation and fitting, after which they can order products via email or phone correspondence. “We can style, fit and offer our advice to clients in the comfort of their own home, workplace or anywhere else they desire.” Back Jacket Suiting Shop 17, 77 Oxford St Bulimba P 3399 7618 blackjacketsuiting.com.au

Weddings A day in the life of a bride-to-be – Kimberley Busteed Dear Diary, The wedding is almost here! Where did those last three months go? I’ve finalised my styling meetings with Amini Concepts – Kelly Starr is a legend! My talented florist from Friday Flowers is counting down the days and the team at Gambaro Restaurant are bracing themselves for the onslaught of our 160 lively and very… spirited relatives and friends! So… what’s left to do in the last seven days before the big day? Call on the village people for all the final touches! Personal Training After too much cake tasting, I went for an extra session with my personal trainer Bekk Millwood. I’ve just finished her 12 Week challenge and feel unreal!! I’ve strengthened my body and mental state. Let’s face it, who doesn’t want to look their best on their big day?

julie from stefan works her magic on my soon-to-be wedding day locks... Love Her!

stylemagazines.com.au

Hair and Makeup trial If I weren’t marrying Chris, I’d marry Julie from Stefan. She’s a genius. Not only does she do my hair for events and filming on Queensland Weekender, I’ve also enlisted her and her team to style the locks of my entire bridal party. The Beautifying process… For some ‘quiet time’ with my bridesmaids, I booked us a Pedi Party with a twist at Brooklyn Beauty Bar. It’s the ultimate in multi-tasking; cocktails are served while having our pedicures and lots of laughs!! I had a facial and famous Brookey’s Brows done while I was there, and did I mention my spray tan? Goodness gracious! Man-Styling I guess the day isn’t all about me - Chris is making an appearance too! I’m so excited to see him and his handsome groomsmen in their suits! The team at Mitchell Ogilvie has decked them out from top to ankle… actually, on that note, do I need to organize socks?? RM Boots are done… and I wonder if he’s happy to do his own hair and makeup? So much to think about!! We’ve settled on navy for the boys to suit the bridesmaids ‘Ultra Suite’ frocks and I couldn’t be happier. The suits are stunning!!! Note to self: watch single friends around single groomsmen. Most importantly… my frock! Two words here: Darb Couture. After five weeks of fittings from calico to stunning ivory silk, Brad Webb has created the most breathtaking frock. It’s more than I could ever have imagined. I cannot wait to walk down that isle.

Chris and I, all loved up at our engagement party. Woowie! Talk about handsome. Guess it’s time for us to part ways - see you at the altar, Chris!

Beauty tips for matrimonial bliss Style chats with beauty specialist Brooke Jesberg of James Street’s Brooklyn Beauty Bar for the scoop on pre-wedding beauty tips. What’s your top skin care advice for a Bride-to-be? The aim is for beautiful, clear, glowing skin. I suggest starting your prep about three months prior to the wedding. We’re happy to give a free consultation on how to get results. Here are a couple of great options: • IPL skin rejuvenation will boost collagen to create a dewy, healthy glow. • Our in house Doctor can also help with wrinkle reduction and plumping out lips or cheekbones. • Our mini-herbal peel is perfect for just before the wedding. Or for thickened, sallow or problem skin we would bring out the big guns with a series of Aktiv Peels (10 times stronger than microdermabrasion). They’re completely natural with no synthetic acid.

Brooke Jesberg

Lash extensions are wonderful for brides as they provide an instant eye lif t. “We have a licenced bar here, so come in with your bridesmaids and have cocktails while you’re all having your nails done.”

www.brooklynbeautybar.com.au

What beauty tips can you offer? Once your canvas is beautified, the focus should shift to the framework - eyebrows are so important. Also, lash extensions are wonderful for brides. They provide an instant eyelift and… if you’re likely to get teary… no mascara needed! And for perfect glossy, chip free fingers and toenails you can’t go past Shellac. When should a spray tan be applied? My advice is two days (or three showers) prior to the wedding to ensure there is no discolouration on the gown. We have St Tropez and an organic tanner; both are very nourishing so you have an all-over glow. What about wedding night and honeymoon preparations? (Laughs) Yes, waxing pots get a big work out before weddings to whip away unwanted hair. But for a more permanent solution for unwanted hair, laser removal is the way to go. Any parting words? Have fun! Beauty shouldn’t be a chore. We have a licensed bar here, so come in with your bridesmaids and have cocktails while you’re all having your nails done or book out the whole place for your hen’s party! MOTHER OF THE BRIDE

Wedding attire etiquette

Gayle Broad

Smooche Boutique’s Gayle Broad spells out wedding etiquette for mothers of the bride and groom. Preparing for a wedding is both exciting and daunting and as a mother of the bride or the groom, getting the right look is extremely important. As etiquette goes, the mother of the bride should be allowed to choose her outfit colour first so that the mother of the groom then knows to avoid this colour. It’s also a good idea to find out the bridesmaids’ dress colours to differentiate from their theme. Getting a feel for the style of the wedding can also help in determining the outfit choice. Whatever your style, Smooche has some failsafe choices for mothers of the bride and groom. Try a lace and satin mixture in soft champagne for a muted, yet elegant look. Paired with eye catching, elegant jewellery and matching clutch, this is a great look that spells sophistication without being too ‘old’ or over the top. And with sizes ranging from 6 to 22, you can guarantee that Smooche has your perfect wedding outfit.

Pair a blush lip with champagne hues for muted elegance.

FOOD+DRINK Let’s eat at George’s Jane Schon finds The George Bar has promise to impress... without the One Eleven price tag. In December last year, among a saturated and highly competitive dining scene, the reputable Brisbane restaurant, One Eleven, closed its doors. But we hardly had time to dry our eyes before we saw a husband and wife team who have built a solid reputation as successful restaurateurs snap up the coveted space. Former Wallaby captain George Gregan and his wife Erica run GG Espresso, boasting a portfolio of 20 espresso and wines bars across Sydney. They aim to offer a different style of dining to previous 111 tenant Phillip Johnson, hoping to become a ‘local’ for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the same casual yet high-quality flair they’ve become famous for. This priority is clear as soon as you sit down. The wait staff are attentive and the menu is affordable with breakfast and coffee available for just over 10 bucks! We indulged a little more however… The ‘Healthy Breakfast’, of soft-boiled egg, fluffy ricotta, roma tomato, avocado, rocket and soy quinoa toast, is certainly a guilt-free way to start your day. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic, the ‘Baked

Eggs’ have a real kick with flavours of tomato, chorizo and dukkah. I’m not normally one to order what is essentially cereal at a restaurant, but the ‘Jepps Muesli’ with an assortment of stewed seasonal fruit is so light and flavoursome I’d definitely go back for more. It seems they’re well on their way to becoming an evening favourite too. A main will set you back somewhere between $18 to $29, with generous share boards available for under $50. Or if you’re in the mood for grazing, tapas is an easy choice. You’ll find boutique beers on tap and 25 wines by the glass, as well as full-bodied Allpress Carmelo coffee and a modest selection of sweet treats. The Gregans certainly have their work cut out for them heading into a struggling market, but it seems their passion for good food and good service will lend quite nicely to their newest venture. Take your tastebuds to Torba Feast at Torba and take your taste buds on a journey to exotic Eastern Europe. By Sarah Jackson. Born in Kharkov, Ukraine, Anastasiya Sukhinia introduces her native cuisine to Brisbane’s bustling South Bank precinct. Starting her journey in the music and entertainment industry, Anastasiya couldn’t ignore her underlying dream to open her own Eastern European restaurant. Anastasiya celebrated the grand opening of Torba on September 21, opening the doors to another time and place. Entering this up-andcoming establishment is to surround oneself within a 19th Century inspired decadence of purple and gold mystique. But don’t let the sumptuous surroundings distract you from

Owner of Torba, Anastasiya Sukhinia

the authentic yet sophisticated menu stacked with traditional Eastern European flare. “It’s something fairly new for Brisbane customers… I wanted to introduce it to Brisbane and spread our culture around”, Anastasiya explains. Everything is cooked fresh in their kitchen. Anastasiya says, “it’s very healthy food and all our mains and majority of entrées are gluten free and organic”. The authenticity doesn’t stop there, Torba is also home to an equally intriguing bar, offering the perfect Georgian wine, Ukrainian beer, Russian Vodka, Czech spirit, or flamboyant Eastern European

cocktail to enhance one’s dining experience. Anastasiya describes one of the “wow moments” of Torba as their 22ct eatable gold vodka; a smooth vodka with a caramelised flavour, especially made for Torba. Hosting exhibitions of renowned Eastern European artists and live performances of Anastasiya’s own jazz/pop band, this restaurant envelopes its patrons in an adventure to another continent and its rich traditions. With Easter fast approaching and treats to be made, Brumby’s Bakery Bulimba certainly isn’t loafing around. The 100 percent Aussie wheat Get Active range launched in Brumby’s late last year continues to be a favourite in the active and health conscious community of Bulimba. But, when the occasion arises, there’s no shame indulging in a little sweet something, and the iconic bakers have risen to the challenge with their latest creation; a Nutella filled hot cross bun! Brumby’s Brand Trainer Alan Hansen explains, “Since launching in February, they have been outselling our other flavours three to one. With such a popular product on offer, this year is sure to be huge!” With all new products in store, it’s no surprise the true blue franchise is holding food training sessions and innovation workshops in the lead up to Easter! With over 30 years’ experience in

the industry, Alan will assist Brumby’s bakers in perfecting the humble hot cross bun. While many won’t be able to resist the new chocolate-oozing bundle of joy (who can blame them) in store from now until just after Easter, Brumby’s proves that life is all about maintaining a healthy balance, with the Get Active range also available across the country. Brumby’s Bulimba Franchisee Lara Russell says, “Now more than ever, customers want to know what is in the products they are consuming. Love your gut Discover the secret to achieving overall health and wellbeing by showing a little love. By Jane Schon. The importance of Gut health only came to my attention very recently when a dear friend of mine told me it could be the cause of the allergies and skin issues I’ve suffered since birth. So I sought the advice of Certified Holistic Health Coach, Agnes Aldana, who confirmed gut dysfunction leads to chronic imbalances everywhere else in the body. The condition is called Leaky Gut: a disorder where microsize gaps form between cells in the intestinal wall. Our intestine usually acts as a barrier between our digestive system and the rest of the body but once the gut wall is compromised, it can mean the leaking of undigested food, organisms and toxic substances into our system. Symptoms range from digestive disorders to fatigue, unexplainable allergies and sensitivities, aches and pains, fogginess, heart disease,

infertility, hormonal imbalances, and autoimmune diseases where the body attacks itself. Agnes says due to our modern lives many of us unknowingly suffer from “insidious gut issues”. We get so used to feeling “sub-par” we don’t know how truly being healthy feels. Thankfully improving one’s gut health can be as simple as introducing a few items into your diet that promote gut-friendly bacteria. Agnes says we should introduce a good quality probiotic supplement and move to a clean eating plan, including fermented foods. Substituting one meal a day, three to four times a week, with whole-food smoothies is a great way to ingest easily absorbable nutrients whilst giving the overworked gut a rest. Most importantly, reduce the nasties, like coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, sugar and stress! Ever thought about why you feel funny in the stomach when you’re nervous or anxious?

There is a very strong gut-neurological connection that controls the function of your gut. The “brain” in the gut is more active than the brain in our heads in terms of producing neurotransmitters. It’s not called a ‘gut-feeling’ for nothing! The High Performance Fitness team

The team at High Performance Fitness offers quick tips to kickstart your fitness – and no fads allowed! High Performance Fitness looks at your health a little differently. They do not believe in fad diets or quick fixes, and they certainly don’t believe in relapsing into bad habits. Their aim is to help you change your habits for the long-term benefits. Their three top tips to get your fitness started? 1. Start exercising. Just start! Find something you actually enjoy doing as opposed to something you have to force yourself into. There is so much choice to suit your training preferences – ask for a free session to see what you like. 2. Don’t overdo it. Start with three days a week for the first few weeks and build from there to exercising daily, but be consistent - don’t go too hard too fast! Commit to those three days a week for the first month and don’t let yourself down. Build those good habits from the start and it’ll be easy to stick to them. 3. Nutrition. Cut out sugars! Whether you’re trying to lose weight, add muscle, or improve general health, sugar will slow you down (and weigh you down!). That means no more soft drinks (yes, even the ‘calorie free’ ones) and choose your salad dressings and sauces carefully, as these can be high in sugar. With these changes, you’ll see and feel the difference in no time. If you’d like more information about kickstarting your health and fitness, High Performance Fitness offers affordable options to help you turn around your training and nutrition habits. Their ultimate goal is to help you make life changing improvements so that long after you’ve walked out of their studio, you can easily continue on your new healthy way of life. electrocharging ahead Three-time Australian Kickboxing World Champion and XBody Australia Ambassador, Ian Jacobs divulges how EMS technology has revolutionised his training technique. By Tess Brinums XBody Australia is the first studio to offer the XBody EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) technology and system in Australia. During EMS training, 90 percent of muscles are activated simultaneously with each contraction and the contractions are stronger and more intense than a voluntary exertion can do alone. According to research, compared to conventional weight training, deeper muscle groups are activated, which leads to better intra and inter-muscular coordination. As an elite athlete, Ian Jacobs had been exposed to EMS from a young age. “EMS technology is used at the highest level of rehab, but also at physios on a lower level,”

he explains. EMS is a fantastically evolved technique for muscle rehabilitation, usually for elite athletes. It’s only now that this technology has made its way to Australia as a form of fitness, thanks to XBody Australia. As fitness professionals and directors, Emoke (Amy) Molnar and Norbert Folos were intrigued by this new wave of fitness technology. After trying one session of EMS in Europe, Emoke was hooked. “I thought, ‘this is it’; this is the solution for people who want to lose body fat, tone or grow muscles, detox their body, and help with injuries,” she says. Ian describes the workouts as the perfect pick-me-up; better than a cup of coffee. “You get an instant rush with just one session,” he recalls, “It’s an instant zap to your muscles when you’re feeling unmotivated and sluggish.” Most remarkably, with EMS, your body starts to change after just one session. You can burn up to 500 calories during your EMS training and up to 2000 calories in the next 24-48 hours, after just a 20-minute session. For Ian, a former kickboxing world champion and elite athlete, it’s the perfect complement to his other workouts and at two sessions a week, easily fits in with his busy lifestyle. “It makes me train harder, helps me recover faster, and fires me up to keep going, no matter what.” Other client feedback echoes the same results: less stress, increased vitality, more energy, pain reduction, fat loss, weight loss, improved posture, and more balanced muscles. Better still, it’s the perfect tool for the average person to fire up their fitness regimen.

home concepts

As a preview, the ladies wanted to share five simple tips to give your home a little lift: 1. Paint is inexpensive and so easy to do yourself. Start with one room. Don’t overwhelm yourself and think you’ll have to paint the entire house. Start small.

design duo

2. Buy new bed linen. Fresh colours and styles can be easily changed with simple bed linen.

Former contestants of The Block, Katrina Chambers and Amie Godde, share their top tips for home revival.

3. Buy indoor plants. They last longer than buying fresh flowers every week and really brighten a room.

Sprucing up the home can be as easy or as hard as you make it, say sisters and TV renovation stars Katrina Chambers and Amie Godde. With a plethora of styling and renovation shows hitting our screens once again, the girls predict design discussion will be abuzz. That’s why the ladies have recently launched Design Tribe; a forum aimed at creating an online design community where everyone can share ideas, freely ask questions and engage with design experts. “It’s like having a group of designers at your fingertips and it’s all free,” they say. www.designtribe.com.au

4. Let go. People feel they have to keep everything! One thing new in the house means one thing has to go out. Time for a garage sale maybe? 5. Have a go at some DIY. If you need artwork for a wall, pop on to somewhere like Pinterest and get some inspiration. You never know what you can actually do yourself. Amie Godde (left) and Katrina Chambers

designing dreams Dean Bolger of evermore tells us how it’s all in the details. Evermore designed homes introduces their in-house Building Designer, Dean Bolger to talk us through the design process at evermore. What is your role at evermore, Dean? I am the first port of call for clients, so my job is to consult on the design aspect of their build and ultimately lead them through the evermore design and construct journey. When I start the consulting process, I sit down with the client and conduct a thorough review of details relating to the potential site. I also make sure that evermore can address three key requirements from the get-go: 1. Design aspirations of the client; 2. Interior finishes, exterior finishes and styling goals; and, 3. How we can create the design vision within a tailored budget. After we have gone through the design process, the project management phase

begins, where I oversee the development of the plans through both the pricing and construction phases, which evermore also manage in-house. Do you deal more with interior or exterior design? I work closely with our resident Interior and exterior designer, Melanie Fracchia to set a common theme for the home to ensure fluidity between interior, exterior design and detailed finishes. What is a common question clients come to you with? One of the most common questions we receive revolves around time. The answer is dependant on each client’s situation, but we try to meet with our clients every few weeks during the design stages to keep the process moving and ensure their goals are being fulfilled. evermore designed homes 6/57 Oxford St, Bulimba P 3899 7333 www.evermore.co

Note ladies: Pack your most stylish flats – no one wears heels in Bryon. It’s quite liberating actually!

Girls Getaway Girls Weekend in Byron Bay: Swimsuits, check! Champagne, check! Booked in at Beach Suites, check! By Claire Parviz. It wasn’t hard to convince the stingray girls to pack up and drive to Byron for the weekend, however, they really did take pack up literally with enough luggage for a lengthy overseas winter holiday! How many Kaftans, wedges and Champagne bottles can you fit in one Audi....? Our accommodation thanks to Delvene Delaney and Strop was stunning. Strewth! From the minute we walked in, we didn’t want to leave! Byron Beach Suites, is the perfect destination for any occasion – romantic weekends, family holidays sharing with couples, or a few nights away with the girls. They offer a range of stylish options, including cosy boutique studios and spacious apartments, all in a very central location so you still feel the chilled Byron vibe. The beach views were to die for and the apartment was so big, it felt more like a luxury house. The bedrooms were enormous too – and by the time we unpacked our shoes, outfits, accessories and bags, they looked as if they were prepped for a fashion shoot rather than sleep! Just as we thought it couldn’t get any better, up an internal spiral staircase, we found our own private rooftop swimming pool with stunning 180 degree views of Byron. Banana lounges, 98

umbrellas and an outdoor fridge meant we didn’t need anything other than our mags, ipads and ice bucket with flutes to boot. The proximity of Byron Beach Suites meant that we could walk to everything and we did! Day meant power walking to the lighthouse and back, strolling the fashion stores, trapeze classes at the local Circus School – hilarious and I still have the blisters to prove it – next – bubbles and cheese on the deck looking over the Surf Club, did someone say Speedo’s? ... hard to leave such a view but

pre-dinner drinks and gorgeous meal at The Beach Cafe were calling. This was closely followed by a whip around the block checking out the local hot spots, St Elmos Bar will never be the same again! So, if you are looking for all this and more Byron Bay Beach Suites are definitely for you. Stay three nights for the price of two between May 13 and July 31, 2014.
