o on! Give yourself a clap and a good pat on the back. If you made it to the end of 2021 relatively unscathed, you’ve done bloody well, and I applaud you. Actually, we all do here at Style. And we feel you. I couldn’t tell you how many times at Style I’ve heard someone say “it’s been a year”. A lot. And it has been. Personally, I really tried to preserve my energy and mental health this year by not committing to too much and just slowed things right down (well, at least outside of work). It has got me through what has been an incredibly fast year. That, and the Style team. This is the time of year I get soppy and say thank you and I luff you to the Style team. We have had a massive year, amirite team? Our creative agency continues to grow, and we’ve enjoyed the privilege of working on some great projects and have welcomed new clients to the Style whānau (that’s Maori for family). Our magazine also flourishes and that’s due to a committed magazine team who simply love presenting Brisbane to you all and working with local businesses. Our digital space will see an overhaul and new direction in 2022, as we welcomed back ex-Styler Ree, who is steering us to a new digital galaxy not so far away. We also conducted a major reader survey which yielded some awesome feedback and has provided invaluable insights for our journalists. So that’s also been exciting. I also want to acknowledge the management team – Paul, Courtney, and Rebecca who have been an incredible support, sounding board, and pumpup team. Your intelligence, positivity, and solution-based thinking has been amazing to me personally. But it’s the whole Style crew that has been truly incredible. We’ve asked for a lot this year, and you’ve delivered. We may not have had the same degree of fun that we’ve had in past years, but we have shown resilience and innovation. I’m proud of how you’ve rallied to get jobs done and have been there to support each other. We have a pretty special workplace. You should all be so proud of yourselves and each other. Thanks to our suppliers – we’ve enjoyed collaborating with you. Big thanks also to our clients – we hope we’ve been of real help and brought value to you and your business. That’s it, I’m out. Enjoy the festive season and we’ll catch you again in February!

W

e are truly ending 2021 with a bang, shimmer, and a whole lotta confetti! Across Queen Street Mall we shot this month’s cover with the stunning Coco Chen, who oozed all our festive high fashion dreams. We are so humbled to bring this campaign to life with Brisbane Economic Development Agency and breathe a little magic into the air for what is arguably the most exciting time of the year. Our last issue of 2021 is packed to the brim with local goodness to graze, sip, shop, play, and stay, plus you’ll find a revealing interview with 2021 Australian of The Year, Grace Tame, on page 12 – prepare to be blown away by the power and guts of this Aussie battler. Closer to home we interviewed Brisbane’s first female Portrait Prize winner, Beth Mitchell, and spoke to one of our most beloved homegrown writers, Trent Dalton, on page 72 in the last word (you may need a tissue or two to get through this one). A big thank you to all our clients and contributors who have supported us throughout this remarkable year – we can’t wait to do it all again with you soon. Hoping you have a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year; we’ll be back for you to flip through come February.

I

started painting for the love of it around ten years ago. I’ve always loved beautiful design and beautiful things, and drawing has been a big part of my life since I was a little girl. It was inevitable that I would end up ‘making’ something, but I couldn’t have imagined it would be making art. A lot of people perhaps don’t know that I’m not formally trained as an artist. I am totally self-taught, which in its own way is liberating. I don’t know the rules I am probably breaking! In fact, before pursuing art, I completed a degree in Business Management and worked in advertising agencies across Brisbane and London. After five years of corporate life, I finally bit the bullet and quit my job to follow a creative path. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to have retained a steady stream of commission work whilst growing a loyal and patient customer base for the work I create. My first solo show in 2018 sold all but two of the paintings before opening night and the remaining ones went on to be snapped up a few days later. It was overwhelmingly rewarding for it to be so well-received. Seeing my paintings hung lovingly in the beautiful homes of my customers is incredibly humbling. There is truly nothing DECEMBER 2021

I’d rather be doing. I use watercolour quite vividly and my brushstroke is strongly influenced by Brisbane’s bright light and fresh surrounds. I paint subjects that I am drawn to, and I love to hero the brilliance hiding in the everyday. This translates to lots of fruit, flowers, shells, and beautiful natural objects. I’m also proud of the fabric and textile collaboration I released with Anna Spiro (my sisterin-law) earlier this year. People often remark that my work is ‘very Queensland’ and I used to wonder if this was a back-handed compliment! However, Brisbane is no longer the poor cousin to the southern cities it used to be, and I am proud that I paint in a way that resonates with our beautiful corner of the world. The strong sense of community and optimism in our city makes living and working here energising. For the last five years, I’ve squeezed my painting time amidst the madness of raising three children. As they grow, I am eager to claw back more time to paint and hone my craft. Looking ahead, I’m incredibly excited about some fresh work I have on the near horizon and would love to have a show sometime next year. For now, watch this space!

In a year dominated by headlines of Canberra’s toxic boys’ club, one woman stood out as a beacon of hope, ushering survivors of child sexual abuse forward and into the spotlight. Meet 2021 Australian of The Year, Grace Tame. By ANGELICA SILVA

S

itting inside my tiny Honda Jazz with my laptop propped up on the dashboard seemed like a rather unconventional, but fitting scenario to interview the powerhouse that is Grace Tame. Just a few minutes into our phone call, I found myself chatting with ease and laughing along with her, as we talked about our similar family dynamics (we both have 12 cousins) and one thing was for sure, I left the interview in absolute awe of Grace’s courage, humility, and ambition to eradicate the subject she is so passionate about. Hi Grace! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. What are you up to right now? We just returned from Brisbane, where we caught up with our friends Brittney Higgins and her boyfriend David Sharaz. We also had dinner with the “Ruddernaut” (aka Kevin Rudd or Kevin ’07 the handball king). Among a topsecret photoshoot and a podcast recording, we also managed to sneak in a few sunbathing sessions. I’ve always got stuff coming out of my ears, but I think it’s important to do as much as I possibly can for the cause. You spent two years battling the Tasmanian legal system and won the right to reveal your identity and speak about your experience of child grooming and sexual abuse. How has sharing your story in your own words impacted and changed your life so far? The short answer is, I wouldn’t be here today if I hadn’t been able to share my story – I wouldn’t be here talking to you. It’s changed my life in so many unimaginable ways. I remember the day when I was granted an exemption from the ‘gag law’ in Tasmania, before it changed in April 2020. I remember hearing the news that I was able to talk about my own experience and do what I had wanted

to do for so long – to set the record straight. Not just in terms of my own story, but to educate others about the processes of grooming and coercive control that underpin child sexual abuse and domestic violence. I remember bursting into tears. It felt like an immense weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Abuse is characterised by a total loss of power and agency. So, to finally have this control over my narrative for the first time, was incredibly surreal. It changed the entire course of my life. You’ve been giving keynote addresses across different cities, appearing on panels, spoken on television, radio and podcasts. Does it get easier the more you speak about it, in front of and to such large audiences? No, it doesn’t get easier to tell my story or relive the experience. The best way I can describe it is this trauma being stored in your cells. Each time it’s brought up or you speak about it, it feels like that trauma is being awakened inside of you. But I’ve found that what helps is connecting with others who have shared similar experiences. I lean into this, as it reminds me that my purpose is to help others and to create change that protects others, especially children. I want to make child sexual abuse a thing of the past. I want to completely eradicate it. This is what drives me every day. In January this year, you gave an impassioned speech upon accepting the monumental ‘2021 Australian of the Year award’. Can you tell me what thoughts were running through your mind when you woke up the morning after this night? In the most literal sense, I thought, “Gee, I wish I hadn’t had so many beers the night before,” as I prepared for 20+ back-to-back radio interviews. And perhaps, “Maybe I should have slept for a little longer than two hours.” DECEMBER 2021

But look, I was thinking a lot of things because it was such an insane public moment. 11 years ago, I was being abused by a paedophile – that was my world back then, and I really saw no way of escaping that world. I couldn’t even imagine a life beyond that, because the pain from it felt like this thick fog that totally enshrined me. So, every emotion possible was just coursing through me at the time I received the award. Many people still believe that making a change in our world is too complicated and that their individual actions don’t have the potential to do such a thing. How would you respond to this? I’m living proof that that’s not true at all. I wouldn’t have a voice, and survivors around Tasmania wouldn’t have a voice if it weren’t for the fact that individuals across the country simply put their signatures on a piece of paper to change a law. I do understand though, especially when change feels so slow. It’s also hard to measure. We hear all these numbers and statistics, and think, “What does the number 5,000 or 10,000 signatures actually look like?” When someone says this to me, I like to give them an optic reference, because I just happen to have a physical one. When I was granted the special exemption to the law, this meant I was the first female Tasmanian child sexual abuse survivor to win the right to their public voice. The lady who created the #LetHerSpeak campaign, Nina Funnell, actually gifted me a bound collection of the signatures that were on the petition to change the law. She listed them all out and printed each name of the person, their postcode and their occupation. I saw that there were people from Australia, but also from across the world from diverse backgrounds and occupations. They all signed it. Together, collectively, signature by signature, we made history. So, I always tell people, don’t doubt your work amongst the crowd.

FIVE IN ONE Getting one brand off the ground can be tricky enough, yet Ana Piteria has managed to do it with five stunningly exceptional labels! As the mastermind behind the famed Reliquia Collective, Bethan Warrior chats to this powerhouse creative on how she makes it all work.

Hi Ana! Back in 2015, you were already well established as the head of PR agency OMGFIVE (now, Sueno Communications), what inspired you to make the shift to start your own jewellery brand? During those early years at the agency, I noticed a gap in the market for affordable jewellery that still felt special. At that time, most jewellery offerings were cheap chain stores or much more expensive bespoke pieces. I wanted to create a range that appealed to everyday wear and reflected the vintage-inspired aesthetic that I am so fond of. These days you’re known as the mastermind behind beautiful Reliquia Jewellery, but many people may not know you have four other brands under your belt. Could you tell us how they happened? Reliquia was the first brand and it exceeded my expectations in terms of success and interest. We had some key pieces like the star sign necklaces and spiral hoops that really cemented the brand. The launch of Valet Studio in 2017 has allowed me to play with

different aesthetics and materials. Valet Studio is all about colour with unique resin pieces, which led to the creation of Respiro Studio – initially a range of cute, resin bags. Since then, Respiro has expanded into other materials like satin, leather, and beads. Blanca arose with a desire to offer a full “Reliquia look” BLANCA and further speaks to the aesthetics that I personally love and align with. It seemed logical to build the collection on oversized shirting, statement collars and stripe sets that would complement the accessories. Tying all the brands together is a respect and love for vintage, heirlooms, and European influences.

Although each brand holds its own unique aesthetic, how would you describe the ethos of the Reliquia Collective as a whole? All the brands exist for a community that wants access to quality and style, without being priced out. I hope to bring a mix of fun, elegance and beauty in every range, with these overarching vintage influences. As our heading suggests, you’re a five in one marvel! What’s your secret to juggling that crazy workload? I have a great team that really help to make it all happen. I think another key is just to not get overwhelmed with all that needs to be done. I long ago accepted that the to-do list will never be “done”. I take each day at a time, try to optimise my work time and achieve as much as I can when I’m working, but then also try to assert boundaries around rest and time with family – “try” being the operative word!

BLANCA

When producing for your five different brands, what are your 159 go-to’s for staying Set $ owel T e r creatively inspired? Aey Today there is an endless source of imagery available at our fingertips so inspiration can come from anywhere – a unique hotel lobby, an image of someone’s living room or something as simple as photos of colourful sea glass. Imagery and ideas that instil a sense of calm while still providing a point of interest – through colour, lighting or texture are also inspiring. At the moment, 1970s interiors are also my go-to for aesthetic influence.

DECEMBER 2021

What are you most excited about for the future of the Reliquia Collective? I’m excited to continue building on each brand. At different times, each of them holds my maximum attention and at the moment I would say I am really committed to growing Blanca and investing time and effort into building it internationally also.

“If I could describe each brand in a few words… RELIQUIA: refined, accessible, and everyday. VALET STUDIO: vibrant, bold, and fun. RESPIRO STUDIO: classics with a twist. AEYRE: optimal dinner parties. and BLANCA: bright, relaxed, and inclusive.”

Reliquia Jewellery Narni Necklace $169

What’s the best career advice you’d give to an up-and-comer? Just get started! And have persistence. Knowing where to begin can be overwhelming but the best way to discover what you love and where your talents lie is by seizing every opportunity and giving it your all. If a certain role or experience turns out to not be the best suited, it will still have been a valuable lesson and will mean you’re heading in the right direction when it comes to building a career that is fulfilling to you.

I

t’s the year 2000, you’ve got The Simple Life on repeat and Britney Spears and Brad Pitt are your fashion icons. Those low-rise jeans are fun, but wow that bedazzled cap is gaudy. Circa now, the Y2K fashion revival is back in force with spaghetti straps, chunky belts, and oversized shirts – how do you feel about it? We asked three Stylers if they are for or against the noughty trend.

@DUALIPA

Bethan Warrior Creative Assistant

“A society that improves is one who learns from their mistakes and the Y2K era is notoriously a point of regret. First it’s trucker caps and butterfly tops, but next it’s arbitrary layering and the lowrise jean that’s flattering for exactly 12% of the population. You don’t want to see my belly button and I don’t want you to either.”

Paul Johnston General Manager

“Defs all for it. Most trends go around and around. Think of all the music and movies that are getting revived, so why not fashion? Anything that was popular then will be popular again, but maybe not a Kath DayKnight perm… If it’s not Witchery or Dotti, don’t talk to me!”

“I’m all about moderation with this one. Finding balance by incorporating the trend while staying true to a modern and personal aesthetic is key. Give me claw clips and baguette bags all day long, but I’ll take some tailored linens over low-risers any day!”

AT THE TOP OF HER GAME She’s the creative force behind one of Australia’s most iconic brands, and one half of a dynamic duo that has become renowned for the strong, structured femininity of their aesthetic. Discover what it means to be a woman at the top of Australia’s fashion scape as Bethan Warrior chats to Camilla Freeman-Topper of CAMILLA AND MARC.

As the creative director behind CAMILLA AND MARC, tell us about your process of putting together a collection? Each collection is a creative journey and the inspiration comes from so many different places; whether that be an experience, or art, nature or perhaps architecture. My design team and I work closely to bring the concept to life each season. There are a few fundamental things we are looking to achieve with every garment – designing something that will remain in a wardrobe for seasons to come and creating pieces that make women feel completely empowered and confident. What is it about the brand that has global appeal? I think the global market has come to recognise that the lifestyle and aesthetic we have here in Australia is really special. It’s modern and sophisticated yet classic and relaxed. 28

|

The brand has expanded into off-duty wear and also unisex designs recently, where do you see it going next? Marc and I are ever-evolving as people and it’s a huge pleasure to be able to work on our passions and missions through this brand. As business owners, we have a very special opportunity to use what is in our hands to start important narratives like OVARIES. TALK ABOUT THEM, which is an annual campaign to raise much-needed awareness and funds for an early detection test for ovarian cancer in women. My mother passed away from this insidious disease when I was 11 and it impacts millions of women worldwide, so this cause is very important to me. The other more recent development is the launch of FUTURE NOW, a campaign and capsule collection crafted to make a positive impact on our planet and designed to reduce landfill, ocean waste and carbon emissions, whilst also saving water and energy. We have many new projects STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

in the pipeline and overall, we are excited to continue to carve our own path. You’ve recently gained attention for featuring women of all ages in your campaigns, is the future of fashion ageless? If you knew my grandmothers, you would agree fashion has always been ageless! Both them and my mother have had such a profound influence on my aesthetic. With this decision to include more age diversity in our campaigns I really do hope to create opportunities for women to feel represented whatever their age may be. What career lessons would you pass along to up and comers? I would say move with your instinct and give creativity a real go. We live in such a data-driven world, however from experience I can say that digging deeper into what lies within is truly what people connect with and ultimately what inspires.

Roast the salmon on the middle rack of the oven for 25–30 minutes until the flesh is still a deep pink and just flaking away. THANKS FOR A good guest’s guide to ditching a party early.

HAVING ME

By DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA

When I last bought a new phone, the Apple Genius left me with a tip to go with my new debt: don’t let your phone die too often. A fortuitous snuffing here or there is no big deal, but every time your phone battery reaches its end, a chemical reaction occurs that limits its overall capacity. In other words, a phone that regularly dies is a phone that constantly dies. Likewise, it seems that our social batteries have taken a hit thanks to ye olde pandemic. You’d think we’d be chomping at the bit to pop on our strappiest heels and interact with someone who isn’t one of the regulars at Central Perk, but months out of commission seems to have taken a toll. We might not be able to kick on like we used to, but that doesn’t mean we want to become a recluse. So how do we pull a Houdini without hurting our host?

Do the groundwork When you get the invite, tell them you can’t wait but have something on later in the night. Drop subtle hints that you’re feeling subpar as you munch on the charcuterie board. Don’t catch them by surprise with an unexpected departure!

Make contact A lasting impression with the host goes a long way in being a polite guest. You can’t leave until you’ve had a solid convo that goes beyond hyping up the decorations. Bonus points if you share a pic on your story so they’ll remember you were there the next day.

Quit while you’re ahead Like an action star strutting in slow mo from an explosion, exit the party with gaiety in your wake. Whether you just nailed your round of charades or have the crowds drowning in tears of laughter, ensure you leave on a good note.

Play the blame game If only the babysitter didn’t clock off at nine. If only Fluffy could pour food for himself. You’re absolutely kicking yourself that you have to go when you’re having such a great time but unfortunately, it’s out of your hands.

If all else fails… Smoke bomb. Hey, it gets the job done. 46

THE

SWEET LIFE With Hive & Harvest.

S

tarting as a hobby between family and friends, Hive & Harvest has grown into a blossoming business of single-origin honey that’s locally harvested with love. Big bee-lievers in the natural medicine that honey brings to the table, Hive & Harvest trust that more people deserve to know that their sweet nectar is hand-extracted and distributed by real bee lovers in their area. Now, doesn’t that give you all the warm fuzzies? Certainly tasting sweeter when you know your honey is from passionate makers and local busy bees, the Hive & Harvest Farm in Maleny is a pollinator’s paradise. Having created an ecosystem with hundreds of native and exotic plants, including Manuka bushes, citrus orchards, and rare eucalypts from around Australia, the farm backs onto the Dularcha National Park which supports the bees’ nutrition with year-round nectar and pollen. This diverse environment ensures there is always something different for Hive & Harvest’s

bees and this is why their honey is so unique and every batch is delicious! As we start to sway into the festive season, honey and Hive & Harvest hampers make for a unique gifting option, or simply for yourself to enjoy over the Christmas period. Honey has endless opportunities during the holidays and can be used in Christmas food prep such as cheeseboards, Christmas ham, desserts, and in the current pandemic, it’s a lovely local healthy option for gifting. Ranging from $15 for a jar of festive honey with a fun bow to $149 for a large hamper, this includes an array of specifically Hive & Harvest made cheeseboard items. Other gifting ideas include a gorgeous ceramic pot and spoon, perfect for honeycomb and created by Maroochydore ceramicist Melanie Sprenkeler for Hive & Harvest, plus two tea towels designed by visual artist Shari Elise. McGrath Estate Agents Wilston A fresh and competitive approach with sales agent Craig Lea.

F

or the past eight years, Craig Lea has been a familiar face and leader in the Wilston, Windsor, and Grange real estate space. Positioned among the top agents in Australia, Craig chats to Style about what we need to know about the market right now, and what it’s like to be the number one selling agent in the area.

“BEING NUMBER ONE BASED ON RECOMMENDATION IS MORE IMPORTANT TO ME. METRICS DON’T GET ANY MORE FUNDAMENTAL THAN THAT.”

Tell us a little about you, how did you get into property? My partner was already in real estate, and we took an opportunity to open our own independent office. So, it was straight in the deep end for me. We focussed on growing a quality rentals business first as a solid foundation and then I stepped into sales about a year after opening. What makes you the number one selling agent in Wilston, Windsor, and Grange? Being number one is much more than just number of sales. While I do sell more than any other agent across the area, being number one based on recommendation is more important to me. Metrics don’t get any more fundamental than that. What do people need to know about property right now? It’s an extremely efficient market. There is no time to waste, so for buyers, this means being prepared and proactive and for sellers, it means being aware and responsive. The market is an intense place right now as well and not everyone is having a great time with it. Everyone’s DECEMBER 2021

property journey is different, and we need to be mindful to tread carefully and be supportive in our property conversations. What do you think people should look for when buying a home? I don’t really tell people what to look for anymore as you can direct someone to a property that fits the brief and then for a totally different reason it doesn’t suit. If there’s more than one decision-maker they usually are never in agreement on priorities and that’s cool, but it makes it tough to advise what to look for. Maybe look to get on the same page first. In all seriousness, in a tight market buyers should probably identify what they don’t want and eliminate options that way. If you aren’t finding what you are looking for then some reflection about why that is might be needed. Favourite part of the Wilston and Windsor area? The geography, being hilly and interesting. I also love the balance of traditional and contemporary scattered throughout the suburbs. Why McGrath Estate Agents? Because it’s a brand founded on quality. McGrath across the country has always maintained the highest number of top performing agents than any other brand and I wanted to be among them. And so, I made it happen! DIVE INTO THE

DEPTHS OF FEMININITY

Meet the first female recipient of the Brisbane Portrait Prize. By ANGELICA SILVA

U

nlike the average Australian teenager, Beth Mitchell didn’t spend her youth partying and binge-watching Netflix. Instead, she spent most of it underwater. Exploring femininity through environmental, social, and cultural stories and experiences, Beth decided to set herself, and her lens, apart from the rest – she decided to take it under the world’s surface, revealing a surreal and captivating realm of contemporary womanhood. You’ve just become the first female recipient of the Brisbane Portrait Prize. Tell us, how did it feel to receive this accolade? It felt so surreal! I was in lockdown in Melbourne when I received the news, I was contacted prior to the announcement because I was unable to be there in person. Initially, when the phone call came, it took my breath away – I fell to the floor. Historically, female artists have been underrepresented. So, the more I absorbed the fact that my work is not only the first piece by a woman to win such an award, but it was also the first photographic piece – joy is an understatement.

showcasing my fun teenage years, but as I got older, it transformed. It showed a stronger understanding of the position women have in our society – one that placed a disproportionate value on us, which was to play a ‘perfect and pretty’ role. It’s taken me years of navigating the path of womanhood to get to this point where

Your work embodies a fascination with the underwater world. Where did it begin? It began being in the water as a child, pretending to be a mermaid, looking up to the surface from below and being so fascinated by the movement of the water. I would catch the waves and get this almost fearful rush as my body tumbled to the shore. How would you describe your photography style? I gravitate to expressing its elements of whimsical and painting-like qualities. My shortened version would simply be, “extravagant women in whimsical scenes I construct underwater.”

LORD MAYOR’S PRIZE NO LAND IN SIGHT

What inspires your celebration of the female form? When I was 17 years old and living in Toowoomba, I began photographing my female friends who were all shapes and sizes. Being able to photograph them as I got older made me realise the celebration of the female form changed in its meaning over the years. Fast forward to me at 30 years old, I have lived as a contemporary young woman in various contexts. My work started off

I can explore the depths of femininity from all angles.

What are you currently bingeing? Wes Anderson films! Ultimate dinner party guest? Julia Baird, author of “Phosphorescence”. One beauty item you can’t live without… Tom Ford “Black Orchid” for sure. Ultimate bucket list art series you would like to work on? An underwater series with poet and songstress, Lana Del Rey.

WHAT’S COOKIN’? A recipe for a quirky local band with Big Dinner. By MELISSA MYRTEZA Crank up the volume – Rory Watkins, Tom Jones, Fraser Bell, and Ben Slater are the four boys behind Brisbane band, Big Dinner. From bedroom jams to headline shows across the East Coast, they’re quickly becoming an iconic local sound with their modern Australian Indie-Rock tracks spinning on Spotify. Best dinner you’ve ever had? Happy brain, happier Christmas

Summer season legs

Having a fun holiday season requires a happy brain and a calm body. After all, you can’t connect with yourself and others whilst in the stress zone. Your brain working efficiently is more present, engaged, and productive. It experiences less pain, is healthier, and reduces the chance of burnout. Neurotransmitters are brain chemicals (dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins) that carry, boost, and balance signals between nerve cells and the body. Neurotransmitters play a critical role in influencing everything from your movements, learning, and mood. So, maximise your holiday wellbeing by ensuring quality sleep, maintaining an exercise regime, planning fun socialising, chilling out regularly, and controlling what you can. Foods such as yoghurt, nuts, beans, seeds, eggs, kimchi, sauerkraut, and spicy meals all increase the production of happy chemicals in the brain. This silly season, ensure you plan quality, focused experiences so your brain and body will be in great shape.

As temperatures rise in December, those with venous disease can face escalating symptoms. Increased heat causes veins to dilate which in turn can lead to more swelling and discomfort. Many patients report that summer means the skin on their legs become extra sensitive and their veins more prominent. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce symptoms and walking in the cooler evenings will help relieve venous congestion. Swimming and aqua jogging is also highly recommended as the ‘antigravity’ movements take the pressure off the circulatory system and can reduce throbbing and itchiness often with immediate effect. Compression therapy is another option to consider supporting your legs. Our stockings are skin colour and can be worn with open toes, so they can be easily disguised under a maxi dress and worn with sandals – no one needs to know about your veins!

STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

SKIN SOLUTIONS with Dr Heather Jenkins

Who, what, wear?

Problems with pigmentation?

As the social calendar fills with cocktail parties and business lunches, there is focus on the who, what, where, and of course, what to wear?! Take the focus back to your personal style with a statement jacket to elevate your suit with striking prints, patterns, and texture. Show up and shine on with Wil Valor signature pieces, from sleek leather dress shoes in mahogany, to an Italian silk printed tie in prosperous hues and a new crisp bespoke shirt. Finish on a high note by designing a full bespoke suit to meet the dress code of all occasions. Opt for classic black with double breasted jacket, or a lighter linen in a natural tint for leisurely events. Women may decide on a chic short suit with stilettos as the weather warms, and glittering metallic textiles, sequin accessories or a velvet jacket is the ultimate sparkling serenade to roll into NYE.

Whether you are naturally freckly or have developed age spots and pigmentation after years in the sun, you may be looking to reduce or remove these in favour of a clearer complexion and more even skin tone. And with the ‘glass skin’ trend having developed such a cult following, it’s no surprise! Plump, even and flawless skin will always be on-trend in our books, which is why we have added the best possible laser pigmentation technology to our treatment menu. At The Skin Lab, I utilise a combination of prescription medication, laser, and other treatments such as chemical exfoliants to help resolve stubborn pigmentation which can be ageing and difficult to treat. Great results occur when you add passion and joy to the equation and a desire to exceed your patients’ expectations. I specialise in this field and love to witness the joy a transformation to an even, youthful complexion can bring. THE PLACE TO SEA AND DO Peter Kuruvita’s guide to Noosa and surrounds. By FIONA WILLIAMS On the cusp of his new opening in Noosa Heads, ALBA by Kuruvita on December 16, we caught Peter in-between menu curating to find out the best places to go in the region. Hi Peter, you’re right in the thick of it! How are you feeling about ALBA opening? I’m feeling very good indeed! It’s been a hard three months and we have an amazing team here working away. ALBA isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a cafe in the morning, a pizzeria all day, and in the evenings it’s a chance for me to use the local flavours I’m known for. Plus, we will have our cooking school as well as a chef’s table.

Where are your favourite places to eat and play? • Noosa Junction, it’s got such a varied offering of live music, funky bars, and cafes. • Surfing at Granite Bay. • Beach walk at Teatree Beach. What do you get up to outside of being a chef, presenter, and author? You’ll always find me with the sand between my toes locally and at places like Fraser Island! As a chef, I’m working many nights, so when I have a day off, I’m outside as much as possible. It’s a perfectly sunny Sunday in Noosa, where would we find you? At Noosa Farmers Markets or sometimes my family and I will drive to Harry’s Hut, and from there we ride SUPS. For lunch, I love visiting Copperhead Brewery just outside Noosa in Cooroy.

PETER KURUVITA

What do you think is the best-kept secret about the Noosa region? How pristine it is. The beauty of the region still blows me away every day. Most notably, how you can see through the clear emerald water. Paradise! @PETERKURUVITA @ALBANOOSA

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUSSELL SHAKESPEARE

From the touching words of Boy Swallows Universe, writer Trent Dalton is now asking the people of Brisbane to tell him a love story.

Y

ou may know him as Trent Dalton: the journalist and author, but to me, he’s a friend and mentor who is as genuine as he seems. I first met Trent in 2018 as he released his international bestseller Boy Swallows Universe, and have followed every word, on every page, of every novel, ever since. This year Trent took his typewriter and transformed the stories of strangers into the ultimate love letter and I, like most of Brisbane, was hit with Cupid’s bow. What inspired this new direction? It started with a love story. A dear friend’s mum passed away on Christmas Day 2020. In the parking lot at the memorial park after the funeral my dear friend gave me the greatest gift I think I’ve ever received: his mum’s sky blue Olivetti Studio 44 1960s typewriter. “She wanted you to have it,” he said. Weeks later, I phoned my friend and told him my plan to sit for weeks on end on the corner of Adelaide and Albert St, Brisbane, with the Olivetti typewriter, two chairs, a desk and a sign saying, “Sentimental writer collecting love stories. Do you have one to share?” Do you prefer writing non-fiction or fiction? Totally and unequivocally enjoy them in equal measure and one informs the other. I see little difference between the two. All I see are black words on a white page. The definition of making something out of nothing. All I see in both is storytelling, still the greatest of all our human achievements. How did you choose who to ask that big question? To my great surprise, I reckon about 200 people stopped to tell me their stories of love. I think it was maybe due to the fact we’ve all had two tough years. I think people just wanted to get away from thinking about the future and the uncertainty and all the

things we might have missed out on through this pandemic. People really appreciated the chance to talk about all the things they have, the permanent things, the things set in stone, highest among them: love! Favourite love song? Whatever love song my daughters are dancing to in the kitchen. Do you think the world needs more love? Love is easy. Love is the greatest challenge we’ll ever face. Love is more mysterious than dark matter but just as pervasive. Love is work. Love can’t be bought, and it can’t be owned. Love is given and received, and the receiver must remember to work hard to hold on to that precious gift because the giver is always allowed to take it back. Love is an equal opportunity phenomenon. The school lollipop lady has as much access to it as the millionaire defence lawyer and that’s so often why the lollipop lady is the happier of the two. Love is a thousand things and only one thing: everything. Hell yep, we always need more of it. What’s your favourite love story? January 10, 2000, about 10.15am. I was sipping a flat white at Harveys, James Street in Fortitude Valley. A woman who reminded me of Madeleine Stowe from The Last of the Mohicans sat in the empty seat to my left. Some 21 years later that woman’s my wife and if there’s ever an empty seat beside me she’s the first person I want to fill it. What’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever done? Twenty-one years of scurrying, running, sprinting to catch up with my wife, just to have the breathless honour of strolling by her side. LOVE STORIES IS NOW AVAILABLE AT ALL GOOD BOOKSTORES.
