FROM THE

EDITOR

Q: What is your favourite festive tradition?

THE COUNTDOWN TO Christmas is nearly over. If you’re a busy traditionalist like me, the thought of all the last-minute preparations might be just too much to bear. But put that aside, because there are already some extraordinary sales and events to be enjoyed in Brisbane; our city really comes alive during the festive summer season. This time of year, we begin to really focus on what we are thankful for: the people and moments that make us truly grateful. For me, this year has been about facing challenges and choosing to change along with this excitingly disruptive world and its creative outlets. Speaking of celebrating, our new issue is something to cheer about. Stylish Santa (formerly known as Lee Carseldine) is ensuring we survive Christmas the only way we know how… by shopping and shopping some more at Wintergarden. The rest of the magazine is packed with fantastic ways to come together for the season, with festive food, New Year’s Eve fun, suburb spotlights, chats with Rebecca Judd and so much more. We may be taking a break over the festive season but stylemagazines.com.au will be bursting with activity! I am extremely thankful for all of you, our readers. You inspire us to continue doing what we love. Thanks again for reading and, however you celebrate, may you be happy. Savour it. Please enjoy this little gift from us, our final edition for the year, in which we salute some of fashion’s most creative minds.

SHAPE SHIFTER Specialising in well-designed pieces with a touch of luxe, Nicole Banning of Ephemera elevates traditional swimwear silhouettes to a level of understated sophistication, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. What was the moment you knew fashion was something you wanted to pursue? I have memories of designing dresses from as early as eight years old and I was always interested in fashion. When I finished high school, I spent a year in London and that really cemented my love for fashion and desire to study design. The energy of the city and all the creative love that seemed to be pouring out of the city was so exciting to me. This was at a time before the internet exploded and access to this world was otherwise impossible from Australia.

What was your big move for your career? I moved to Paris in August 2010 [after studying Fashion in Sydney] and started working at Saint Laurent in October that year. It was really one of those “I’ll regret it if I don’t do it” moments where I knew I had to give Paris a go. At 28, I pulled the plug on a great job and a happy life in Sydney to try my chances in Paris.

Nicole Banning

“I PULLED THE PLUG ON A GREAT JOB AND A HAPPY LIFE IN SYDNEY TO TRY MY CHANCES IN PARIS.” stylemagazines.com.au

How did your experience in Paris shape you as a designer? I always instinctively knew that there were things that I couldn’t learn in Australia and that I needed to go overseas to become a really wellrounded designer. My hunch was correct: my experience in Paris shaped me in so many ways. I spent a lot of time in the Italian and French factories, and talking with the various fabric suppliers in Europe. There is such a wealth of knowledge in the textile industry over there. I was constantly learning new things through dealing with our various suppliers. What inspired you to start Ephemera? From a design perspective, I was inspired to

clean up swimwear and offer some classic, no-fuss, well-designed swim pieces. On a personal note, starting Ephemera was about the desire to be creatively independent and also a lifestyle choice. I was fed up with nine-to-seven work and wanted to be the master of my own destiny. What inspired the Ephemera Cruise 2017 collection? The Californian desert was a big inspiration behind Cruise 2017. Your favourite piece from the collection? The Laced Back One-Piece is my new favourite in the collection. I’m a big fan of the bare back and the rhythmical lacing detail. READ MORE ONLINE

MANY TIMES,

MANY WAYS

Whether it means decorating the tree, spending time with family or doing nothing at all, Christmas has a different significance for everyone. Hannah Doody finds out how four creative Australians celebrate the holidays.

Elyse Knowles Quickly becoming one of Australia’s favourite models, Elyse Knowles is known for her killer curves and impeccable sartorial choices. Named the 2016 Face of the Caulfield Cup, Elyse also has a secret passion for wakeboarding, skiing and motorcycling. What is one of your fondest Christmas memories? My fondest Christmas memory would definitely be waking up to a motorbike sitting in the middle of our lounge room. The three of us excited children went absolutely crazy – when we saw it, our eyes lit up and we haven’t been off motorbikes since! What does Christmas look like in your household? Absolute mayhem! Christmas morning always consists of mountains of wrapping paper all across the floor because Santa wraps our presents individually before he fills our stockings. After presents, we all come together for a lunch of love, giving and happiness – before round two with dinner!

Do you have any Christmas traditions? My mum loves to have all of us kids sleep at home on Christmas Eve so we all wake up together on Christmas morning. We all get together on Christmas Eve for a BBQ dinner outside and to watch Carols by Candlelight, but that usually leads to us wrestling and playing on the grass! When my sister was younger, she would wake us all up at six in the morning. Now that she is 19, she always sleeps in, which is perfect for payback! I wake up at seven and get a pot and pan before jumping on everyone’s beds to wake them up. There’s nothing that makes me happier!

14

DECEMBER16

Melina Marchetta Matt Okine Sydney-based author Melina Marchetta has penned several best-selling novels, including Looking for Alibrandi and her latest feat: Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil. Was Christmas a big family affair in your household when you were young? My mother is a North Queenslander, so we spent every second Christmas in Ayr. We would stay in my grandmother’s home and live in shorts and no shoes for six weeks. All my cousins lived in the same street and I just remember playing with them. Now it’s usually at one of my sister’s homes, my home, or my mum’s. It’s a lot of food, but not traditionally Italian food. My brother-in-law is Irish and part of our tradition is that my sister makes a Guinness stew the night before just so that he won’t get homesick! Do you have any other Christmas traditions? Growing up, there was no way we ever got out of midnight mass. I was brought up in a pretty Catholic household so that was pretty much the focus. And anywhere we went (whether it was a Sydney Christmas or a North Queensland one), it was almost a week of big, big, big family celebrations. Sometimes we look back on it now and think, “How did our mothers cope living with 60 people in the house?”

“HELL WOULD FREEZETH OVER BEFORE DAD DIDN’T COOK SOME SORT OF ROAST FROM A RANDOM ITEM THAT WAS ON SPECIAL AT THE SUPERMARKET.” – ALEX DYSON

stylemagazines.com.au

After three years presenting Triple J breakfast with Alex Dyson, Matt Okine is calling it quits to focus on TV, his music project Boilermakers, and his love of stand-up comedy. What did Christmas Day look like in your household when you were growing up in Brisbane? Because my parents weren’t together, I would spend the first half of Christmas Day with my dad, who would then drop me to Mum’s place. It would always be a very simple Christmas with Mum, my sister and myself. She used to make this French-style lemon chicken which, looking back, is so typically Australian. After Mum passed away, we would have Christmas at Dad’s. He is all about food. There would be a lot of seafood, prawns, and mud crabs if he’d been fishing recently. He would cook these peanut and spice-rubbed African kebabs called chichingas on the hibachi stove. Man, I have never given them to someone who hasn’t enjoyed them! Do you have any Christmas traditions? There were a few Christmas Days where I worked at a video store. It’s bizarre because a video store is pretty much the most unnecessary thing to be open on Christmas Day. The boss was adamant people would be scared to have their new releases overdue, so I would be the schmuck sitting by myself on Christmas. No one ever came in so I could do whatever the hell I wanted. The concept seems barbaric now, not to mention copping the fine if it wasn’t rewound! What is one of your fondest Christmas memories? My dad is from Ghana and I spent a Christmas over there about 15 years ago and we had a big, big family get-together. There are some traditions there that I’m not really across. At one point, one of my cousins had to come up to me at the table and say, “You know how you’re eating with your left hand? Well, you’re not supposed to do that.” It’s not about the kitschy, shopping sort of stuff; it’s more about family and tradition.

Alex Dyson After 10 years at youth radio station Triple J, three of which he spent hosting a breakfast show with Matt Okine, Alex Dyson is saying goodbye. From December 16, he will embark on a round-the-world adventure and attempt to ween himself off his addiction to new Australian music. You grew up in country Victoria; what did Christmas Day look like in your household when you were young? It was usually a very early morning because Santa would fill up a sack of pressies that were wrapped in butcher’s paper for some reason. I don’t know, maybe the ol’ fella just liked quality meats and had some left over to wrap up our board games. Anyway, then it was usually sunny so we went to the beach. Do you have any Christmas traditions? Hell would freezeth over before Dad didn’t cook some sort of roast from a random item that was on special at the supermarket. What is one of your fondest Christmas memories? I remember my sister and I got matching Mickey and Minnie Mouse raincoat ponchos. We wore them to the Warrnambool Lake Pertobe Adventure Playground, where we climbed over the play equipment looking very fly indeed. They were boiling, sure, but fly. 15

MUM ON A MISSION A modern woman in every way, new mum Rebecca Judd is kicking goals on the career front, writes Sophie Catsoulis. INSPIRED BY THE design process behind her own home, Rebecca Judd has dived headfirst into the world of interiors. When asked how homewares measured up to her other passions, Bec got right to the point. “It has certainly replaced fashion,” she admits. While Bec’s summer collection with Adairs is not her first design venture, it has certainly been the most well-received, her signature style evident in its very stitching. Each piece is a seamless combination of contemporary minimalism and vivid colour, perfect for summer. Bec’s blog, Rebecca Judd Loves, is an unwavering expression of her aesthetic. Well aware of how she inspires her loyal readers, Bec takes the inclusions on her blog very seriously.

16

Pops of pink and geometric patterns? Perfection! “If I don’t love it, it doesn’t make the cut.” But the blog now takes a backseat to her growing family, with recent additions (adorable twins) taking centre stage. “It’s a constant juggle,” Bec says, “but I love it.” And now that Chris, her AFL-star husband, has hung up his boots, this juggling act may just get a little bit simpler. Weaving the iconic history of the Brisbane Showgrounds into its experience, the exciting arrival of King Street has given locals a new taste of what’s to come in the precinct that packs a personality punch like no other. With an eclectic mix of independent and innovative restaurants and cafés taking up residence along the street, the precinct boasts a paddock-to-plate ethos that is proven by the quality of produce in every recipe. Being connected to the biggest agricultural event

Fusing traditional techniques and modern flavours, Il Verde effortlessly explores the future of Italian fare with a diverse menu of dishes. find Queensland’s first Sushi & Nori Japanese restaurant, and Australia’s only Hello Chicken venue. Both restaurants have honest food at the forefront of their experience, and offer various eat-in and takeaway concepts that are ideal for any occasion, from a quick work lunch to stylish modern dining. This new foodie hotspot has quickly become a favourite for locals. The Style office is already wellacquainted with the buzzing precinct after more than a few lunchtime jaunts to the various venues. Aaron Favaloro

DRAWN TOGETHER Wintergarden has collaborated with fashion illustrator Aaron Favaloro for a S/S Christmas campaign. FOLLOWING SUCH ESTEEMED fashion illustrators Kerrie Hess and Sally Spratt of The Lust List, the talented Aaron Favaloro has teamed up with Wintergarden to celebrate summer with his beautiful artwork in a Shop the City campaign. A card Aaron drew and posted on Instagram attracted attention, and the former Frenchs Forest High School student started receiving requests for his drawings. Since then, the popularity of Aaron’s colourful, quirky and caricaturesque illustrations has continued to rise. He has acquired a high-profile

international following, with endorsements from celebrities such as Gisele Bündchen, Nicole Richie, Olivier Rousteing, Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian and Tyra Banks. Aaron has even had the chance to illustrate superstars such as Gigi Hadid, Beyoncé, Oprah, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Aaron’s signature style and his unique ability to create an arresting visual image have drawn

the attention of many international companies, including Estée Lauder, Tiffany & Co., Moët & Chandon, Swarovski, Rolls-Royce, Dior, House of K’dor and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival. Always looking for new ways to contribute to the fashion landscape, Aaron’s fresh approach will continue to see him go from strength to strength.   WGARDEN.COM.AU

Experience a Christmas like no other; celebrate outdoors with the perfect picnic, writes Annabelle Beirne. INSTEAD OF STOCKINGS and Santa sacks, why not place a picnic basket under the tree? Whether your ideal destination is the beach or the backyard, this year it’s time to take the stress out of Christmas. And what better way to relax than with a picnic? The menu instantly becomes easier as there is obviously no way to roast a turkey at the beach or glaze a ham in the park. The meal can be adjusted to consist of quiches, salads, and as many cheeses as you can fit in the esky. Many families fall victim to over-catering on Christmas Day. If you’re packing a basket, you can’t exactly bring the entire kitchen – which is a blessing in disguise! Every guest can bring

stylemagazines.com.au

a plate, eliminating the stress associated with cooking for hordes. If you’re not a fan of plastic cutlery and disposable serving dishes, there’s no need to go overboard. Remember, Christmas decorations are really only used once a year. If you do want to create a theme, purchase items with neutral patterns that can be used throughout the year. An outdoor Christmas is a great way to get loved ones together and avoid a chaotic clean-up. Just think: fewer dishes to wash and no need to tidy the whole house! The holiday season is all about celebrating with your friends and family. Forget spending hours in the kitchen; simplify Christmas with a festive picnic.

KINETIC ENERGY Style takes a few minutes to get to know family man, boxer and branding and advertising guru Murray Sutherland.

Murray Sutherland

What is the philosophy behind your company, Kinetic Etc.? Customers want more than to just look at a brand – they want to engage with it. We’re less about advertising in the traditional sense and more of what I call a branding and activation agency. We bring brands to life. What are some projects you have worked on with Kinetic Etc.? I’ve worked on over 300 different brands in my career, but the Teneriffe Festival is close to my heart. It is now one of the biggest street festivals in Australia with more than 50,000 attendees in one day. We won the Lord Mayor’s Best Community Event of the Year Award with the Cerebral Palsy League’s Picnic in the Park, delivered the Valley Fiesta for Brisbane City Council, and I worked on the YMCA’s Rat Race. How do you spend your spare time? I am lucky enough to have three beautiful women in my life:

my wife Shiralee and daughters Skye and Lily. I have also played a lot of top-level sports in my life, and one day I decided I wanted to do boxing. After five years and three amateur fights with the Boxr team in Teneriffe, I have found it was the most physically and mentally challenging sport. What is your favourite place to eat in Brisbane? My wife and I love going to Jellyfish on Eagle Street Pier for a big dinner, but for a quick coffee and catch-up, Harveys on James Street is where I spend a fair bit of time. What’s next for you and Kinetic Etc.? Kinetic’s next major event activation is the Brisbane River Jazz Festival, held near the Gasworks Precinct in March 2017. Also, I have recently taken up the presidency of the Valley Chamber of Commerce which I am very excited about! KINETICETC.COM.AU

COMPETITIVE FINANCE QUOTES AND SERVICING PACKAGES AVAILABLE AT WESTSIDE BMW.

LUXURIOUS MOVEMENT The all-new BMW X1 is here, with a sharper and more advanced look, writes Christie Sutherland. I HAVE NEVER been one to fall in love with a large car but nowadays that really has changed and most 4x4s are pretty decent to drive. They come in all shapes and sizes and the BMW X1 is one of the smallest – which is why I love it. It is manoeuvrable and easy to drive around the city. My overnight test drive from Westside BMW gave me a firsthand experience of what it would be like owning this majestic vehicle. There is plenty to like about the BMW X1; as much effort is put into the entry-level model as is put into the top-shelf model, which is a rare find. I test-drove the latter, with all the bells and whistles. While there was so much to love, a few key elements stuck in my mind: the superior finishes and reliable performance; the alerts on the steering wheel; the soft drive. 26

The generous serve of features was reinforced with adjustable suspension, active cruise control, sports seats, digital radio and panoramic sunroof. I couldn’t even begin to enjoy all this car’s features in my short time but I made the most of it. What is noticeable from the start is the superb handling of this medium-sized car, as well as the 2.0 litre turbo-charged four-cylinder engine with a matched eight-speed gearbox. It is said to go from a standstill to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds. I didn’t have the opportunity to try the sprint for myself but I have no doubt that the vehicle willingly meets it. This new model incorporates more interior and trunk space, and this only adds to the fierce drive. The dashboard is attractive, built out of decent materials, and is extremely well laid out for all lifestyles, even the busy ones.

The BMW menu system is super intuitive and easy to get your head around on the go, and the centrally-located screen is at just the right height for your needs. Westside BMW is a boutique experience in a state-of-the-art environment, and as the local dealer to the Western Suburbs it definitely holds a unique community feel with a personalised service from all departments. The ease of parking on-site was a privilege, and coffee and refreshments make stopping by a real treat. Westside BMW offers a variety of test drives, but nothing can beat the excitement of an extended test drive overnight. WESTSIDE BMW 275 MONIER RD, DARRA P 3363 7500 WESTSIDEBMW.COM.AU

BCCC HAS A SPECTACULAR ROOFTOP PLAYGROUND AND HOSTS FAMILY SAUSAGE SIZZLES.

IN GOOD HANDS The personalised educational environment provided by Brisbane City Child Care is the real deal. THE FIRST FEW years of a child’s life are formative. What happens during this time will impact them for the rest of their life, so choosing the right child care is essential. Brisbane City Child Care (BCCC) understands this: they have created a centre that uses ideas and research from all around the world. Before opening Brisbane City Child Care in 1994, operators Margaret and Chris Buck were part of a professional early childhood education study tour to China. “We were exposed to an amazing spectrum of children’s services that were so large, yet could provide such high-quality education programs,” says Chris. With this in mind, Margaret and Chris created a business that has continued to achieve the highest attainable quality rating by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority. Catering mostly for newborn to five-year-old children, BCCC prides itself on providing a wide range of stimuli. Their large playground has blue

skies, a creek, a hidden rainforest, fresh berries that can be picked and eaten straight off the tree, silkworms, climbing walls and beautiful fig trees. Children will be engaged as they experience the right balance of fun and learning with French lessons, musical instruments, a dinosaur dig, and age-appropriate classrooms. BCCC provides the longest service hours in the industry, as well as convenient free drop-off, and secure on- and off-street parking for parents. Preparation for everything is vital and there are no corners cut: BCCC regularly practises evacuating all children and staff outside the building in under two minutes for emergencies. Amazing. With BCCC, you can rest assured that your children will experience the best personalised educational environment available. BACK TO BASICS The simple staple that is so hard to get right just became perfect, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. DECADES MAY PASS and fashion trends may come and go, but this staple can always be found in your wardrobe: the humble t-shirt. Whether you’re paring it back with your favourite denims or layering it underneath a jacket, the perfect t-shirt can be hard to come by. While Rebel Cavallucci was managing sister Nicky Charman’s store (Calexico) on James Street, the pair travelled the world together, picking clothes to bring back to Brisbane. After years of trying to find the perfect tee, Rebel decided to create a fashion range of her own: Frances Hendrie. “I decided I wanted to create a brand that offered a great-quality and great-fitting range of t-shirts that you could purchase time after time without them changing,” says the Perth-born

fashionista. “I took what I love about my favourites and tried to combine everything.” Rebel is no stranger to amalgamating concepts: the name of her brand is derived from her own maiden name (Hendrie) and her little sister’s middle name (Frances). Whether your go-to t-shirt is the boyfriend, fitted, raw-edge or classic everyday cut, you can find it in the Frances Hendrie range. The tight collection of tees is perfect for a less-is-more look that complements everything else in your wardrobe.

“We are your quintessential t-shirts. Frances Hendrie focuses on finding the perfect fit in each of our styles and [we] offer it season after season,” says Rebel. FRANCESHENDRIE.COM.AU

THE BEST GIFT OF ALL Bring joy to your community and make a difference by volunteering this Christmas, writes Kelly Forbes. THE DECORATIONS ARE up, the carols are playing and our wish lists are complete! Christmas is nearly here. It’s a time to reflect on the joys of life, cherish our loved ones and look forward to the opportunities of the New Year. Between the family events and shopping expeditions, it’s easy to get caught in the whirlwind of the silly season. And sometimes we can forget that not everyone is celebrating Christmas as joyfully as we are. Many Australians may not have a Christmas tree to set up, or they may be spending this blissful occasion without their loved ones. As our working weeks for the year come to an end, now is the time to consider taking a few hours

of our holidays to work with our local communities. There are countless charities dedicated to bringing Christmas cheer to those who may not be able to experience it first-hand. Whether it’s delivering gifts to disadvantaged children, or providing companionship for seniors who will be alone this season, just a few short hours could make the world of difference for others

within our neighbourhood. Anyone can apply to get involved and perform simple tasks that help to raise funds, feed the hungry and create laughter. Take time to be the difference in someone else’s life this December. After all, there’s nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer and the spirit of Christmas.

FIT FOR LIFE SQDAthletica is creating groundbreaking activewear for the modern man.

YOU CAN’T DENY how popular activewear is for modern women – it’s spawned parody videos, been added to the dictionary, and even been described as “the new denim”. Traditionally, a man’s gym wardrobe would consist of a pair of footy shorts and an old shirt, but men are now starting to realise the benefits of clothes created for a workout. While there’s plenty of activewear for women and sports-specific apparel for a unisex market, the team behind SQDAthletica realised that there was a gap in the market for men’s fitness-wear. SQDAthletica is targeted at men of all ages, lifestyle stages and fitness levels, who want to be “fit for life”. “In researching the market, we found there has been an increase in conversations about stylemagazines.com.au

men’s health – both mental and physical,” says SQDAthletica General Manager Nicola Hodgson. “By finding balance and taking time out doing things they love, we’ll have a happier and healthier community of men,” Nicola says. “This is what sets us apart from the competition – we’re not about the podium finish; we’re about participation.” Unlike other sports apparel brands, SQDAthletica has been designed with all elements of a man’s lifestyle in mind – not just working out. “[It’s for] whatever his day becomes, from a morning run or gym session to the daily commute, a game of touch footy with the crew or simply walking the dog,” says Nicola. With an emphasis on fit and function over fads, all garments are made using high-quality, moisture-wicking fabrics to guarantee that the

range delivers on exceptional performance. Understanding that men aren’t always the most eager shoppers, the SQDAthletica stores at Carindale, the Gold Coast and Fortitude Valley are designed to make the experience enjoyable. “You can wander the store at leisure or relax in the SQDAthletica Good Times Studio – a chilled zone where guys can grab a drink from the fridge as they sit and read the paper, one of our magazines, zone out on social media or just hang while their partner or family shop,” says Nicola. Every step of the way, it’s clear that SQDAthletica is creating more than just men’s activewear – they are creating a lifestyle. SQDATHLETICA P 1300 000 773 SQDATHLETICA.COM

In Bed 2005, by Ron Mueck from Sugar Spin

Lightning for Neda 2009, by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian from Sugar Spin

GOMA TURNS 10 Celebrate 10 years of GOMA from December 3. GOMA’S 10TH BIRTHDAY is being marked with a summer jam-packed full of exhibitions – and there’s something for everyone. The largest of these exhibitions is Sugar Spin: You, Me, Art and Everything, which features more than 250 contemporary artworks exploring light, space, architecture and the senses. Sugar Spin will feature major new commissions, including Nervescape 2016, a large-scale multicoloured landscape of synthetic hair by Icelandic-born, New York-based artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir. This will be her first work in Australia and the largest in the world to date.   Other highlights include Carsten Höller’s Left/Right Slide 2010, which will spiral visitors from the top to the bottom of GOMA, Ron Mueck’s oversized In Bed 2005, and Olafur Eliasson’s interactive installation of thousands of white Lego pieces, The cubic structural evolution project 2004.

36

Proud of the 10-year milestone, QAGOMA Director Chris Saines CNZM said this is a time to reflect on GOMA’s impact locally and nationally, and to look toward its future.  “GOMA has been a force for cultural change, stimulating our appetite for contemporary art and ideas. We can take pride in a decade of world-class exhibitions and programs and celebrate wonderful additions to the State Art Collection,” Mr Saines says. “It’s only fitting that in marking this milestone we offer visitors of all ages a multifaceted, sensory and participatory art experience.” GOMA will also unveil a series of birthday gifts to the Collection; among them is Heard by American sculptor and performance artist Nick Cave. This group of brightly-coloured sculptural horse costumes will be brought to life by dancers at the GOMA Turns 10 opening

weekend before becoming part of the exhibition. This incredible milestone is also being marked by a new public artwork from Queensland Indigenous artist Judy Watson. The free exhibitions will also include Lucent, showcasing art of Australia and the Pacific, and a second chapter of A World View: The Tim Fairfax Gift. Visit GOMA at the Cultural Precinct, South Bank from December 3. QAGOMA.QLD.GOV.AU

BEHIND THE WHEEL Sharpen your driving skills and experience the height of performance with the new Audi A3 range, writes Christie Sutherland.

I WAS RECENTLY given the opportunity to take the new range of Audi A3 models for a drive. Setting off with a fleet including the new Audi A3 Sedan, A3 Sportback, A3 Cabriolet and S3 Sportback, the Audi A3 Sportback E-tron and the impressive Audi RS 3 Sportback really does make you feel incredibly important. The experience placed an emphasis on control and dynamics, making me aware of things I would never usually notice while driving. The Audi Drive Day does not push you to your limits; there’s no skidding or screeching tyres. This fun day was focused entirely on the Audi lifestyle and the leisure that the brand effortlessly evokes. The luxurious drive through the countryside of Samford and up Mt Glorious to a picturesque lunch spot at Ocean View Estates Winery & Restaurant 40

was exceptional. There were five stops along the way, giving everyone the opportunity to change to a different vehicle to test out the speed, agility and unique features of each car in the fleet. Every changeover stop got more exciting, the roads became more of a challenge, and the chatter increased as each person fell in love with a model. Audi’s ability to combine understated elegance with power, technology and luxury is what makes it so sought after as a brand. There was a feeling of luxurious quality across the entire range, with clever design features, soft-touch surfaces and leather that was to die for. The RS 3 Sportback was an obvious front-runner due to its power, quick gear change and incredible sports appeal. In close second was the new A3 Sedan and the A3 Sportback E-tron. The A3 is a

perfectly-balanced car: a four-cylinder engine and seven-speed dual clutch automatic. The A3 E-tron, on the other hand, is a pleasing combination of hybrid and hatchback. Roomy enough for everyday tasks, the six-speed automatic boasts a four-cylinder 1.4 TFSI engine and an electric motor that allows the car to drive up to 50km without touching the fuel tank. The Audi Drive Day heightens your appreciation of luxury and allows you to explore performance on a new level. According to Chief Driving Instructor Steve Pizzati, many car enthusiasts will tell you they’re pretty good drivers and most are wrong; a statement with which I truly agree. WITH AN IMPECCABLE COLLECTION OF HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY IN-STORE, YOU ARE SURE TO FIND THAT SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SURPRISE.

18ct white gold ruby and diamond ring $2000

BESPOKE BRILLIANCE For a personalised Christmas gift, create something they’ll treasure forever with Robert White Jewellers. SOME SAY THE best Christmas gifts come in small packages, and the team at Robert White Jewellers knows this to be true. The family-run establishment has been handcrafting jewellery for more than 40 years, after young goldsmith Robert White first purchased the business (then called S Knowles and Sons) in the Brisbane Arcade in 1974. Robert instilled an admiration of fine jewellery in his daughter Hannah and son James from a young age. “Because James and I have both grown up with and around the business, we will always have very fond memories of being ‘allowed’ to come to work with Dad at Christmastime when we were children,” says Hannah. When it comes to finding the perfect Christmas gift, the team at Robert White Jewellers believes in mixing tradition and simply embracing your instincts.

“We find that, regardless of price, our clients want something that speaks to them and the person receiving the gift… That way we can help them start their own traditions.” With an impeccable collection of handcrafted jewellery in-store, you are sure to find that special Christmas surprise. For something truly unique, you can choose to personalise gifts with a bespoke design. “We start by consulting with our clients about what they want to achieve, because no two gifts are the same,” says Hannah. Known for sourcing exceptional jewels, Robert White Jewellers involves clients in each step of the process, from drafting a design and choosing stones to final fittings before completion. “Once the piece is finished, our clients have a beautiful bespoke piece of jewellery they can keep for years to come.”

CAN YOU DIG IT? Be bold and add a little flare to your wardrobe this season with the return of ’70s-inspired fashion, writes Annabelle Beirne. BACK IN THE summer of ’69, if you were breaking boundaries, you were getting it right. Bikinis, miniskirts and anything paisley were creeping into fashion. By the time it got to the late ’70s, it was all about flowing bohemian dresses, printed neckties, flower crowns and the largest pair of circle-frame sunglasses you could get your hands on. ’70s style doesn’t necessarily demand dressing in head-to-toe printed floral. Nailing the trend of yesteryear can be as simple as opting for a softlycut front fringe, wearing an A-line midi dress or donning a pair of flared high-rise jeans. Style icons such as Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin

Tigerlily St Etienne bag $89.95

Seafolly Gypsy Summer slide tri bikini top $109.95, tie side Brazilian pant $109.95

and Ursula Andress were beloved for their fashion confidence – these ladies were at the forefront of rising hemlines and plunging necklines. The ever-popular “off-the-shoulder” trend that has been making the rounds in recent times is all thanks to Brigitte. In fact, it’s also known as the Bardot neckline. If you’re struggling to get your funk on, seek inspiration the old-fashioned way by watching a James Bond film from the 1970s. The Man with the Golden Gun will leave you swooning over Roger Moore, Britt Ekland and the new-season style we just can’t get enough of. My advice: wear the flare like you just don’t care!

EYEWEAR EXPERTS The stylish staff at Madonna Rigney Optometry reveal how to choose the perfect frames. MADONNA What is your favourite style of frame? Currently I love the resurgence of the ’80s many of the designers are going for. J.F. Rey, Ahlem and Garrett Leight have all released ranges with a strong ’80s influence and vintage acetates. DAVID What is your top tip for maintaining eye health? It sounds boring but… veggies and exercise. Our eye health is closely linked to our systemic health so maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is the best thing you can do to minimise your risk of sight-threatening eye disease. Also, protecting your eyes from UV is just as important as protecting your skin. Find a killer pair of sunnies and wear them!

David, Madonna, Virginie & Jeanette

VIRGINIE Any advice on choosing the right frames to suit your face shape? Similar to clothing and fashion, we are instinctively guided by some basic “rules” when selecting the perfect frame for each face. As is also the case with fashion, these rules were made to be broken. We encourage our clients to explore new shapes and styles that may be a little unconventional and outside of their comfort zone. The fit is essential and, of course, confidence is key.

JEANETTE What should people keep in mind when choosing their frames? Have fun with it. Try something new – try everything! You’d be surprised how many clients feel like they should apologise for taking their time to choose their frame. Don’t apologise! We love to help our clients explore the endless possibilities in eyewear. MADONNA RIGNEY OPTOMETRY 3/17 LYTTON RD, EAST BRISBANE P 3844 4648 MADONNARIGNEYOPTOMETRY.COM.AU

BOLD AND BRIGHT

PUT THE RIGHT FOOT FORWARD

END-OF-YEAR RENO RUSH

IT’S TIME TO soak up the warm sunshine, enjoy the company of friends and loved ones, and take the opportunity to relax in the ambience of an alfresco setting. Friends and family gatherings over the festive season usually take on a casual vibe, so why not combine fun, fresh and colourful furniture for your next Christmas soirée? Our hot summer nights call for fun pieces such as relaxed deck chairs and casual lounge furniture in vibrant tones. Add bold splashes of colour with scatter cushions and fun table centrepieces. Adapt this colour palette to your Christmas dinner table with fun patterned table runners, colourful linen napkins and brightly-coloured ornaments to really emphasise the relaxed and vibrant Queensland atmosphere. Traditional will always be in style for Christmas so if this theme is for you, decide on your classic colour palette first. Be it red and gold, white and gold or green and red, carry this through in all the little details. A cohesive colour palette will always tie any elements of your styling together.

FOR YEARS I’VE wanted to solve a problem that has been plaguing women all around the world: how to enjoy the fashion of a high heel, yet still feel comfortable all day long. As a podiatrist and physiotherapist, I’ve seen first-hand the pain that high heels have caused my patients. I’m on a mission to provide women with the ultimate benefits of foot support packed into footwear styles that they can feel confident wearing. With body mechanics in mind, I’ve designed and created a footwear label aimed at alleviating and preventing heel and arch pain, plantar fasciitis, and forefoot pain. My label, Frankie4 Footwear, boasts modern and classic styles that are on-trend, transseasonal, and equipped with hidden support. Combining modern style and innovative design, Frankie4 boasts a gorgeous feminine silhouette as well as a functional footbed for the ultimate high heel fashion that all women can enjoy, pain-free.

AT THIS TIME of year, everyone is thinking about Christmas. For the renovation industry, it’s without a doubt the peak season: many people want to have their renovations complete in time for Christmas celebrations, but often they leave things too late and end up rushing the process. We believe there is a good deal of professionalism in being up-front with our clients and telling them what they can expect from us. This could mean that we have to advise people to take their time and not rush into a renovation. Christmas and New Year are wonderful events to show off your home, but once the season is over, you still have to live with your new kitchen for years to come. Missing the “Christmas rush” isn’t always a bad thing. A new year brings new energy and perspective; the perfect mindset for tackling a renovation project. Instead of rushing the process, consider making your renovations a New Year’s resolution. We love helping people accomplish their dreams.

TIME TO POP THE QUESTION?

STUCK IN A CAREER RUT?

CHOOSING CHILDCARE

THE CHRISTMAS AND New Year period is the most popular time to get engaged. Maybe it’s all the festive cheer in the air; most people are on holidays, families are coming together and everyone is celebrating. So why not add another amazing celebration to the list? The advice that I often give to guys is that it is better to have the engagement ring and not need it, than to need it and not have it. On many occasions, a groom-to-be has told me that he intends to propose in the next six months, only to frantically call me two weeks out from the day, needing that perfect engagement ring crafted. So if you know you’re a procrastinator, or even if you just like to be spontaneous, don’t wait until it’s too late! Start planning for your engagement ring to make sure it’s ready in time for the holiday season. That way, if the perfect moment presents itself, the only thing you will have to think about is how to pop the question. If you’re ready to have that ring made, pop in-store today.

WHEN I HELP my career coaching clients narrow down their reasons for feeling like they’re in a career rut, the cause is usually that they are not exploring their full potential. Often, I see people avoiding these questions and focusing on other areas of their life to gain fulfilment. But when we spend most of our days and hours at work, we can’t keep avoiding these questions forever. The reason we avoid exploring what to do next is because it can be difficult. Staying in your comfort zone and working without change is guaranteed to hold you back in your career. But discovering your natural genius zone is easier than you think. If you spend your days doing something you excel at and enjoy, it won’t feel like work. And if you get paid for it, well, that is a ticket to a passionate career. People who are stuck in a rut can also be stuck in their heads and tend to over-think without action. Writing down your strengths and weaknesses is a great tool to help discover how to challenge your career direction.

STATE MANAGER, QUEENSLAND, Dr Lesley Jones says the right childcare can inspire a love of learning so children will embrace literacy and numeracy, so they can reach their full potential. What should you look for in an early learning and childcare centre? It’s all about “the vibe” when you walk into the centre. There should be a certain happy, busy-calm balance; a nurturing, stimulating and safe environment with caring, qualified early learning professionals. Given their rapid development, children need to be immersed in activities and stimuli that feed their hunger for knowledge. A quality early learning centre and nurturing home environment is the perfect combination for your child to develop their full potential. It will also help prepare them for school. Visiting a centre is the best way to meet the key educators and learn more about their approach to learning, daily routines, and facilities. It’s normal to have questions as you consider care for your child. After all, you need to be comfortable with the choice you’re making.

BUTTON CUFF VS DOUBLE CUFF

DECK THE… TABLE!

LETTING IT ALL GO

GQ MAGAZINE RECENTLY noted that wearing cufflinks at work is an unfashionable ’80s hangover: it’s the era of the button cuff now. This is a revelation for some men, as wearing cufflinks helps them feel more distinguished. The button cuff is traditionally the working man’s cuff as it’s easy to fold up to get your hands dirty. Button cuffs are also popular because they are quick and easy to fasten, lightweight (no doubling of fabric like the double cuff) and easier to use at a computer. Here are some tips to ensure you use the button cuff correctly: • The cuff must be well-fitted, with generally only half an inch allowance. • Tailored cuffs with one cuff will accommodate your watch. • Ensure 1cm to half an inch of the cuff is showing under your jacket sleeve. Three common styles of cuff are the button, rounded, square and corner cutaway. My preference is the corner cutaway, closely followed by the round cuff as I like sharp lines.

YOUR CHRISTMAS TABLE can really set the tone for your festivities. This season, it’s all about simplicity, with metallic accents, warm fairy lights and candles. Plan your table setting before you start decorating, keeping in mind the layout and function. Create a focal point in the centre and develop the style of table around this. Invest in good quality, simple basics such as an oversized white tablecloth, elegant dinner sets and glassware. Bring interest to the table by incorporating metallic cutlery and black granite, slate or marble serving boards. Table settings make more of a statement with repetition, and the layering of textures with glassware, cutlery, plates and platters will always bring contrast to the table. The most important thing to keep in mind is to avoid over-styling! We’re bombarded with inspiration, and people often try to incorporate too many different looks, Christmas styles and decorations. Decide on your theme first, and stick to it!

MY CULTURE INVENTED the word vendetta, which represents the worst of people exacting revenge. In my field of work, I often deal with people who have been wronged by a person or organisation and have feelings of loss, anger, sadness, and guilt. Some find it hard to let go of what happened. Instead of choosing to embrace forgiveness, they allow these harmful feelings to consume them and take over their lives. Choosing to forgive someone can be tough because it can look like you are okay with what happened, and are willing to accept less for yourself, or let the person get away with it. But this is rarely true. Holding on to unproductive feelings tends to have a worse impact on you than it does on the person who has wronged you, and it gets in the way of moving on. Consider forgiving someone not because they necessarily deserve it, but because you certainly deserve some peace. Remember, life becomes easier when you learn to accept the apology you never got.

STYLE STANDOUT…

Taleggio bursting through the tortellini.

Kingfish, cucumber, apple and dill

FINELY-TUNED Allium is plating up imaginative dishes and making fine dining more approachable, writes Christie Sutherland. THE NEW FARM space that formerly housed The Foraging Quail has been transformed into a relaxed fine-dining destination. Created by James and Kylie Gallagher, Allium showed absolute dedication to excellent service and perfectly-executed meals during our visit. Head Chef James Gallagher and his team source fine produce and present it in innovative and comfortingly familiar ways. The menu focuses on seasonal, locally-sourced, slightly-left-of-field and sometimes luxurious ingredients. The interior is minimal but not stark, with the focus remaining on the open kitchen and a chunky bar. The intimate setting is refreshing and showcases a suburban feel. Silence fell when the chef’s taster arrived at our table. The chicken liver parfait, passionfruit and pain d’épices were a work of art on the plate. The dish was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, managing stylemagazines.com.au

to be delicate and decadent all at the same time. From there, we moved onto a palate-cleansing kingfish paired with cucumber, apple and dill that nearly had me licking the bowl. It was in that moment that I understood the relaxed fine-dining atmosphere that Allium evokes. With our mouths ready for every bite to follow, the Wagyu inside skirt arrived, paired with caramelised onion, miso eggplant and black garlic. The butternut squash tortellini, Taleggio and walnut pesto quickly followed. Our minds were blown. The meltingly-tender Wagyu was filled with huge flavour from the surrounding accompaniments and the Taleggio bursting through the tortellini was close to one of the best things that has entered my mouth. Perfection on a plate. The few dollops of smooth baked potato puree and grand cru butter had us surprisingly comforted. When eating such a diverse range of dishes,

it’s not always practical to pick a single bottle to rest on for the whole meal. Thankfully, it was easy to choose a suitable glass for each course from the wine list. Desserts featured a plethora of chocolate, meringue and sweet fruit finishes. It was a difficult choice but the lemon meringue with brown butter, fennel and mascarpone won me over. With Allium’s ever-changing menu, you can always be sure you’ll return to something new. ALLIUM RESTAURANT & BAR 148 MERTHYR RD, NEW FARM P 3254 0595 ALLIUM.COM.AU

LAST-MINUTE MUST-HAVES With these quick fixes, you’ll be the hostess with the mostest, writes Emma Carr. THE HEAT OF a Queensland Christmas often fails to justify a three-course meal. These last-minute additions will ensure your guests go from salivating to satisfied. PLATE UP PRAWNS All of Australia is blessed with fantastic seafood but few things can beat Mooloolaba prawns. Plenty of seafood markets in Brisbane allow you to collect your prawns the morning of your celebrations, even if it’s December 25. If you’re collecting your prawns at the last minute, ensure that you place your order early to avoid missing out on this seasonal must-have.

FEED ’EM FRUIT We may not be able to justify a hot chocolate on Christmas, but who can complain when we are able to have a plate of mangoes cooling in the fridge? If the little ones don’t polish them off, you can add the remainder to a fruity cocktail or Boxing Day salad. SERVE SWEETNESS You can easily trick your guests into thinking you’ve gone all Nigella Lawson this year. Gingerbread cookie dough truffles sound deceitfully intricate. Whip them up Christmas morning and let the compliments roll in.

SALAD SAVIOUR Be prepared to cater for a guest with special dietary requirements with a dish to which meat, gluten and/or dairy can easily be added

or omitted. Tomato, basil and crisp torn lettuce, drizzled with olive oil, requires minimal work and will allow you to enjoy the frivolity of your festivities.

Jake Nicholson, Blackbird GOMA dish: Murray cod, avocado, pea garden, allium

IT SEEMS THERE is a new venue on the foodie scene every week, proving that wining and dining has become a Brisbane way of life. We are undeniably spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out, but there are a few local spots that are unparalleled in their innovative ideas that continue to challenge the conventional food experience. JAKE NICHOLSON OF BLACKBIRD What is your signature boundarypushing dish? I make a “silk purse” from a sow’s ear. I slowly braise the ears before, filling them with a chicken mousseline, packed with garlic and brown butter. It’s then steamed, crumbed and fried;

I haven’t met a person yet who doesn’t say it’s delicious. JOSUE LOPEZ OF GOMA RESTAURANT What are your expert tips on plating up a dish? Even after years of experience and having a vision, I often attempt a few ways of plating for every dish, trying different angles and thinking about what I am trying to convey. It is important for me to celebrate the natural form of each ingredient and present them in a very organic way. My other advice is to utilise the entire plate as a canvas and not to overcrowd the plate; smaller portions on a large plate create an elegant look. READ MORE ONLINE

NEW YEAR NIBBLES These tips from Superior Fruit will keep you out of the kitchen and on the dance floor at your New Year’s Eve party.

YOU’VE GOT TO have something to soak up your bubbly, right? But everybody knows that New Year’s Eve is all about celebrating – not slaving away in the kitchen. Peter Maniatis, owner of Superior Fruit & Wendy’s Kitchen, chats to us about his top tips for creating easy and delicious New Year’s Eve nibbles.

and apricots), Peter says you’d be crazy not to incorporate some. “Buy as close to Christmas as possible and buy high-quality produce, as this will last you through until New Year’s Eve,” says Peter. “This is the perfect opportunity to make sure none of our great produce goes to waste.”

USE UP YOUR CHRISTMAS LEFTOVERS Peter says the best thing about New Year’s Eve is that you get to take the last of your Christmas leftovers and transform them into new dishes. A cold meat platter is an easy option for leftover ham, chicken and turkey. Use a cranberry sauce as a dip on the side and you’ve got yourself a crowd-pleasing dish with no cooking involved! Peter also says panettone can be turned into a delicious bread and butter pudding: “The great thing about panettone is being able to leave it on the bench and know it won’t go stale.”

CREATE PLATTERS A fail-safe option for New Year’s Eve nibbles is a platter. Whether it’s a cheese platter, fruit platter or a cold meat platter (or all three!), you can’t put a foot wrong, especially if cooking isn’t your forte. “I can’t cook – I like to buy good products, take the lid off and put it all together,” says Peter.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SUMMER PRODUCE Stocking up on fruit is another easy and delicious option. With so much beautiful stone fruit in season (cherries, mangoes, nectarines, plums stylemagazines.com.au

KEEP IT SIMPLE This is the perfect time to let loose and celebrate – so don’t sweat the small stuff. “New Year’s Eve is nothing too formal,” Peter says. “No sit-down dinners. St Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse $39.95

4. Kérastase Paris Discipline Maskertine $62

Trilogy Pure Plant Body Oil 110ml $27.95

1. OIL SLICK Summertime doesn’t have to mean ditching your favourite beauty oils. All the salt and sun can actually dry out your skin during the warmer months, and oils are a great way to replenish what the elements have stripped away. Trilogy’s Pure Plant Body Oil contains rosehip oil to repair and hydrate, sweet almond oil to stabilise the natural pH of the skin, and apricot oil to soothe away inflammation.

3. SMOOTH IT OUT If you do nothing else to prepare yourself for the beach this year, remember to exfoliate. Regular exfoliation helps smooth skin, fade imperfections and improve the appearance of any lumps and bumps, and it provides the best prep for spray-tanning. Clinique’s Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliating Cream is a luxurious treatment that will leave your skin feeling smooth and polished.

2. GOLDEN GLOW Self-tanning technology has improved significantly in the last few years, and you can now choose from red-, violet-, green- and blue-based products, depending on your skin tone. St. Tropez’s Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse has won awards as it ticks nearly every box: parabenfree, easy to apply, oil-free and has Aromaguard technology, which removes the telltale scent of fake tan by 70 per cent!

4. A PINCH OF SALT If you’re lucky, a bit of salty seawater can whip your hair into tousled, carefree waves. Unfortunately, not everyone’s hair takes so well to beach conditions – especially afterwards. The salty water can be very drying on your hair, so a nourishing hair treatment can make all the difference. Try using the Discipline Maskertine deep-conditioning hair mask from Kérastase Paris to give your locks some extra love. DECEMBER16

PUMP IT UP!

CHOOSING YOUR OBSTETRICIAN

RETHINKING YOUR INK?

NORMAL CIRCULATION IS a complicated process. While your arteries might be in good health, if your veins aren’t working properly and are leaking due to varicose veins, then long-term tissue damage can occur. This will leave you at risk of venous ulcers later in life. If you have venous disease, you might be able to experience some relief by elevating your swollen feet and ankles and your tired and aching legs at the end of the day. There are many medications and devices on the market that claim to help boost circulation. Medical Graduated Compression Stockings have been proven to improve leg vein circulation and health; before you buy, remember to check the fit and compression rating. Plus-sizes provide a better fit for taller patients. It’s important to remember, however, that these methods only provide temporary relief and are not capable of preventing long-term tissue damage. If you’re worried about your aching and swollen legs, an ultrasound investigation may help to pinpoint the problem.

AN OBSTETRICIAN WILL play a huge part in your pregnancy. They see the good, the bad and the ugly, and are there to support you every step of the way. But how can you tell which obstetrician is right for you? There are many things to consider, from the practical (which hospitals they work with, and how they cover unavailability) to the more philosophical (what their approach is when things get a little off-track). Your obstetrician should be respectful of your beliefs and values, and be prepared to work with you to achieve a safe and optimal outcome. Here are a few questions to ask your obstetrician: • How much input will I have in decisions about my pregnancy? • Will I see the same specialist throughout my pregnancy and delivery? • In what situations would you recommend induction of labour or caesarean section? If, after your first appointment, you leave feeling listened to, respected and involved, then you’ve made the right decision.

OUR LIVES ARE constantly changing and sometimes what was once important is now less relevant. If you decided to get a tattoo for a significant event in the past, that could be holding you back from the next phase in life. If you’re rethinking your ink, then Laser Tattoo Removal may be a good option for you. Actress Angelina Jolie is one of many who have had a tattoo removed. The tattoo bearing her ex-husband’s name was removed and replaced with an inking for her children. Having that unwanted tattoo removed can alleviate the need to cover up when job-hunting or wearing your favourite outfit. Laser Tattoo Removal can be used to completely remove a tattoo or fade it for modification or correction. It’s essential to ensure that your clinic is medically-supervised and that trained technicians are using the latest laser equipment. Here at Cosmetic Image Clinics, we offer a range of pain management options to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

WELCOME YOUR SUMMER LOCKS

STOP THE SNIP!

RAINBOW FAMILY POSSIBILITIES

SUMMER IS FINALLY here and although that means we get to enjoy our Queensland weather, the elements can take their toll on your hair. Here are our top tips to keep your hair looking fresh in summer: • Hot weather leads to lots of swimming, which tends to make blonde hair go a little brassy so it’s important to invest in a blonde shampoo. • Olaplex is the absolute go-to product! Once a week, leave this bad boy in your hair overnight and in the morning your hair will feel better than it has in years. • Can we talk about split ends? Regular trims will stop your hair from splitting higher through the hair shaft. Plus, it looks so much healthier! • As the weather gets warmer, so do the tones in our hair. Colour trends for this season are golden and warmer browns. And for blondes, keep it creamy not ashy. • For the guys, try putting subtle highlights through the top of your hair to add dimension. It’s 2016 and totally acceptable for guys to have colour in their hair.

TRIMMING THE EYEBROW may sound fun, but it is just one small slip away from a disaster! These days, I see plenty of girls on Instagram snipping away at the hairs until there is nothing left. While this may work for some, it is an unrealistic expectation for so many women who don’t have a thick enough brow to cut away. Be careful of brow salons who take to trimming every brow they see without consulting the client. If you got a bit carried away with the tweezers (or the scissors), the Brow Rehab program may take some patience, but the outcome is long-lasting and incredible to see. Our Arch Angels take our consultation process seriously, talking you through how you would like your brows to look and how we can get you there! We focus on only taking the hairs that need to be taken. This means that we can coach brows into something fantastic. If you would like to come into The Brow Bar for a brow consultation with our Arch Angels, we would love to meet you!

THE LGBTI COMMUNITY often faces a unique set of challenges when trying to start a family: encountering confusion and misunderstanding, sometimes from medical professionals. Fertility providers, too, have a culture traditionally geared towards heterosexual couples. Everyone deserves to feel excited and proud when starting a family, but too often Rainbow families are made to feel judged and excluded. Rainbow Fertility is the first dedicated fertility service provider in Australia to cater exclusively for the LGBTI community, and we are extremely honoured to be part of creating these families. It’s a world-class service, with industry-leading technologies, a solid supply of donor egg and sperm, and a passionate team experienced in helping create LGBTI families. With fertility treatments and preservation to donor programs, donor insemination, IVF and surrogacy, there are now more options than ever for gay, lesbian, transgender and intersex people wanting to build a family and have a biological connection to a child.

TRAVEL

FUSING MEDIEVAL AND MODERN, ESTONIA HAS AN ALLURE ALL OF ITS OWN. SOVIET ARCHITECTURE AND ROMANTIC ART NOUVEAU BUILDINGS STAND ALONGSIDE GLASS SKYSCRAPERS.

INTO THE BALTICS Think “former Soviet” means dull and grey? Think again. Hannah Doody explores the gritty, forgotten charm of Estonia. FROM THE MOMENT the hostelworker told us about Rummu, Jaime and I knew we had to get there. Part of an abandoned Soviet prison an hour outside Tallinn (Estonia’s capital), the limestone quarry of Rummu is now half-submerged, making it a popular swimming spot for locals in the summer. There was only one problem: it was on private property and only possible to access on foot. It didn’t take long for Jaime to persuade two young guys from our hostel to drive us there. The guys were from France and Canada respectively, and they seemed trustworthy enough. So we stocked up on snacks at the supermarket, plugged the address into Google Maps and set off in search of Rummu. The rugged green meadows whipping past the car window were mesmerising. Some might say the Estonian landscape is bleak and harsh but to me it’s full of intrigue. We arrived at a road with a barbed wire fence with some parked cars alongside it. Climbing through a hole 82

in the fence, we waded through the thick vegetation until we reached a clearing – and the view was surreal. The limestone mound spills down to meet crystal-clear water. Dilapidated, abandoned buildings that would have made up the old prison emerge from the water and surrounding trees. We wandered in and out of the abandoned buildings, admiring the colourful graffiti on the walls as we imagined what this place would have been like so many decades ago. This was just one of many bewitching episodes on my trip. Everything felt so removed from anything I had experienced before. Fusing medieval and modern, Estonia has an allure all of its own. This is a country where brutalist Soviet architecture and romantic Art Nouveau buildings stand alongside glass skyscrapers and shiny shopping districts. Once you have a taste of the nightlife, rich history, cultural meltingpot of cuisines and untouched natural beauty of Eastern Europe, it never stops calling you back.

We wandered in and out of the abandoned buildings, admiring the colourful graffiti.
