EDITOR’S NOTE

W

elcome to our November Party Issue! In this edition, we’ve put together over 12 pages of everything you need to get you into the party season, from head-to-toe fashion to expert tips on getting your hair, brows, and skin ready. We’re also shining a spotlight on some incredible local party businesses that know how to make your celebrations truly unforgettable. And speaking of unforgettable, we’ve got an exclusive recipe from Settimo’s Guy Grossi. Get ready to tantalise your tastebuds (and impress your guests) with his mouth-watering Insalata di Polpo e Patate (octopus potato salad). Our cover features Olé, one of several popular hotspots from the dynamic Alemré Hospitality Group (think Vici Italian, Mucho Mexicano, and Downtown Istanbul). The shoot is a riot of colour and exudes those undeniable party vibes we all love. We’re convinced that our stunning cover model Monique is destined for stardom! In Last Word, we introduce the inspirational Tom Robinson, a 24-year-old Brisbane local who embarked on a mission to become the youngest person to cross the Pacific Ocean. While his boat may have encountered some rough waters, Tom spent a remarkable 260+ days at sea – inside, he shared a glimpse of his incredible journey. And finally, dive into a fantastic fashion story featuring Andrzej Pytel, owner of House of Ezis. His couture store in Fortitude Valley is truly a local treasure. Thanks for joining us in this festive and fun-filled issue. It’s the season to celebrate!

s founder of The Prop House Collective, Jano Kotzas oversees a world of glamorous events, breathtaking activations, and stunning decorations. A Brisbane local, Jano has a deep-rooted connection to the city with her grandfather (and now father) owning the famous Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. After falling in love with her job as a window dresser, Jano eventually launched a freelance business which morphed into The Prop House Collective, one of Brisbane’s foremost event and activations businesses. Jano is the mastermind behind some of Brisbane’s most electrifying installations, but one project she describes as having a special place in her heart is “when we designed and installed custom Christmas decorations for Queen Street Mall in 2013”. “It was a huge project for us, and we collaborated with local artisans to create 4.5m high characters that lived in the mall each Christmas for a magical six years,” she says. Jano views her work as a way to elevate the city she holds dear, explaining that, “I love Brisbane’s authentic heart and soul; this city is attached to its roots but also brave enough to grow and expand to reach new heights.” As managing director of The Prop House, Jano’s days are filled with concepting with stylists, creating and proofing marketing campaigns, and managing projects which involve designing and implementing some of Brisbane’s most iconic installations. Jano thrives in the dynamic environment of event styling and activations. “With Christmas around the corner I can be driving a scissor lift through a shopping centre at 2am, loading boxes out of a container, or decorating my showroom. My job is never boring, 8 |

and no two days are ever the same.” When asked about the most rewarding part of her job, Jano says, “It’s the joy that gets me, whether it’s a guest entering a fully styled room, a store owner who has had their window dressed or a child walking into our Christmas showroom. You can’t beat the feeling of the joy that comes from what we do.” Jano’s ideal Sunday afternoon is a portrait of domestic bliss: sitting on her verandah in South Brisbane with family and friends, enjoying a meal cooked by her husband, and drinking a glass of crisp white wine. @STYLEMAGAZINES

STORY

FOOD made

fun

Experience the tastes of the world with Alemré Hospitality Group.

F

or Alemré Hospitality Group, creating a food business that is both fun and authentic was important – after all, two of life’s simplest yet great pleasures include enjoying good food in good company. Dubbed as ‘the home of Brisbane fun dining’, Alemré Group, which is celebrating its first birthday this year, is behind some of our city’s most beloved restaurants, including Spanish favourite Olé Restaurant, Vici Italian, Mucho Mexicano, and Downtown Istanbul, with a new venue set to open in the new year (all we can say at this stage is the focus will be on Argentinian style dining and chargrilled meat – lots of it!). “We thought it was time to showcase our dining group under the one brand,” General Manager Brandon Orr says. “We have been serving customers for over a decade through our fun and relaxed dining venues and have evolved as a group and we now want to share who we are and where we are going.” For anyone who’s a Brissy local, chances are you’ve dined at their flagship venue Olé in South Bank. The Spanish restaurant and bar – which is headed up by Executive Group Chef Adam Starr – is known for its irresistible tapas (the paella is out of this world), delicious sangria, and relaxed atmosphere. Ps, did you know it was the first sangria bar in Brisbane? Alemré Group is also home to Vici Italian, which serves up some of the best wood-fired pizza and Italian food in Brissy. Word on Little Stanley Street is, their breakfast menu is also top tier – their Panino alla Verdure, which is made up of grilled haloumi, avocado, zucchini fritter, fried egg, and cheese, is truly what breakfast dreams are made of.

‘Mucho’ food and ‘mucho’ drinks is the mantra for their Mexican restaurant, Mucho Mexicano, which has everything from tacos to quesadillas (yes, they have a dedicated margarita bar too – insider tip: we’d recommend popping in on a Monday for $15 margaritas all day long!), while Downton Istanbul in Hawthorne has earned a reputation for dishing up mouth-watering homemade Turkish-inspired bites. The hospitality group, which has gone from strength to strength since forming, has plenty to look forward to in the coming months. All restaurants will be relaunching their brunch menus for the summer holidays with prices starting from $79 – expect a set menu with two hours of free-flowing drinks (keep an eye on their socials for more details). They’re also gearing up to launch their annual New Year’s Eve Sip & Savour Trail. For those of you who don’t know, the four-and-a-half-hour event is a tour of their three South Bank restaurants, starting at Mucho Mexicano, then Vici Italian and Olé (for $165 per person, prepare your taste buds for a flavour explosion like never before). The Alemré Group team has also been busy expanding their expertise beyond their venues and recently did a kitchen collab with Kangaroo Point’s stunning new Mediterranean-inspired rooftop bar, Sunsets Rooftop. “Alemré should be on everyone’s radar!” Brandon says. “After the launch of our new venue mid next year, we’ll be continuing the development of an exciting, never-beforeseen dessert concept. We also have plans to franchise one of our existing South Bank powerhouses beyond Brisbane.” ALEMRÉ HOSPITALITY GROUP ALEMRE.COM

A

rchitect turned fashion designer, Andrzej Pytel’s exquisite bespoke gowns line the walls of his Ann Streetbased atelier. When asked what inspired him to open House of Ezis, he explains, “It was deeply rooted in the desire to build connections with clients who share a common vision and appreciation for the creative process.” Before his current life in the beloved atelier, Andrzej, like other renowned designers such as Virgil Abloh and Tom Ford, was deeply involved in the world of STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

architecture. His shift into fashion was driven by a thirst for design freedom and an admiration for the dynamic human form. "Fashion is sexy, while buildings are rigid," he claims, highlighting the contrast between architecture's constraints and fashion's fluidity. Yet, he found parallels between the two disciplines, attributing his expertise in structure aesthetics and functional thinking to his architectural background. This influence is evident in the sculptural nature of his designs, drawing inspiration from the 1950s, surrealism, and gothic architecture. Andrzej initiated his fashion journey by creating unisex festival wear, which found its way into 12 Australian boutiques, and was worn by celebrities like Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki. His attention later turned toward women's fashion after receiving commissions for custom-made school formal dresses, gradually evolving into glamorous evening gowns. "The shift to womenswear provided greater creative freedom in design, captivating the attention of international stylists and celebrities,” he says. This shift marked the beginning of House of Ezis' presence on red carpets, with his designs gracing events such as the Logies, show openings, and Oscar after-parties. This momentum naturally led to the creation of bridal wear, where Andrzej's objective was to infuse the allure of the red carpet into bridal gowns. When clients seek Andrzej's expertise for a bespoke piece, they are invited to become an integral part of the design process. A personalised and immersive experience involves an initial consultation and several fitting sessions in order to bring their vision to life. When asked what Andrzej enjoys most about owning his own atelier, he expressed the fulfillment of being a part of his clients' special moments. "It's not just about creating beautiful gowns; it's about sharing the emotions, dreams, and transformations of those who wear them.” With his designs featured in esteemed publications like British Vogue, DAZED, and Moevir Paris, as well as being worn by some of the world's most prominent celebrities, Brisbane is privileged to be home to one of Australia's most exceptional gown designers. @HOUSEOFEZIS

EdwardsAndCo Nothing says summer more than a fresh hairdo. In the lead up to the party season, EdwardsAndCo has shed some light on the biggest summer hair colour trends, and yes, chunky highlights are back! Here’s what you can expect… The ‘Scandi Hairline’ is predicted to be huge this summer. The hair colour trend is all about colouring your hairline and baby hairs a few shades lighter than your natural colour for a sunkissed appearance. For the copper girls wanting a change for summer, blonde highlights are the way to go. To achieve the ‘Sparkly Copper’ hair colour trend, the trick is to drop your highlights off the root for a more natural and softer grow out. And just when we thought the 22 |

recently-resurfaced Y2K aesthetic had died down, there’s another reason to dust off your lowrise jeans. The infamous 1990s chunky highlights are back and, apparently, better than ever. The experts at EdwardsAndCo say a high-contrast blend of brunette and warm blonde will add depth and dimension to your natural hair colour, warming up your look for the hotter weather. C’EST DU GATEAU

LADOKOLLA ON THE HILL

EAGLES NEST BRISBANE

Yasou! Say hello to Highgate Hill’s newest foodie addition: Greek restaurant Ladokolla on the Hill. Promising delicious eats (we’re talking homemade moussaka, pastitsio, stuffed cabbage rolls, and lamb and potatoes in the oven), oldschool hospitality, and plenty of ‘kefi’ (Greek for togetherness), the family-run restaurant prides itself on serving up simple food, done well. Trust us when we say you’ll feel like you’ve just stepped off the plane and walked into a taverna in Greece.

Panoramic views, rooftop sunset drinks, and tapas-style bites worth salivating over, Eagles Nest Brisbane, which is situated atop The Point Brisbane Hotel in Kangaroo Point, is the perfect spot for an afternoon catch up with friends. The rooftop bar, which also doubles as a corporate event venue, offers a delicious menu (tuck into favourites like brioche chorizo sliders and truffle fries) complemented by a range of signature cocktails, Champagne, wine, and craft beer. PS, don’t miss their New Year’s Eve event (head to their website for details).

VERTIGO

The southside’s latest bakery is an authentic taste of France, helmed by two talented chefs with more than 15 years experience in the kitchens of high-end patisseries and hotels across France and Europe. From decadent brioche to delicate mille-feuille, and of course, delicious croissants, C’est du Gateau also has the savoury lovers sorted with the likes of a 12-hour slowcooked BBQ pulled pork and caramelised onion croissant.

Taking dining to jawdropping new heights is Brisbane Powerhouse’s new vertical restaurant, dishing up an exclusive gastronomic experience four stories above the ground overhanging the institution’s industrial façade. With the talented Bar Alto chefs indulging adventurers via local ingredients across a set menu, diners can opt for a different kind of dessert in the form of drop lining down the building after their meal. Dress code? Safety harnesses, of course.

It’s a little FRENCH This welcoming neighbourhood eatery is a suburban gem dishing up refined French fare.

S

tepping into Haig Rd Bistro feels as inviting as stepping into your mother’s house. And in the words of Arvid Noack, the owner of the restaurant and sister venue, Le Coin Bistro, ‘Maman’ — French for mum — “always looks after you.” Having cemented itself as Auchenflower’s neighbourhood gem since its opening back in 2019, Haig Rd Bistro is considered an institution. And after we had the pleasure of sampling dishes from their new spring menu as well as some bonafide classics, it’s no surprise why. Seamlessly blending aspects of a casual eatery with the refined expertise of a fine dining establishment, this Neo-French bistro puts an emphasis on using simple ingredients to create exquisite flavours. Recently nominated as Best French and Best European Restaurant across South East Queensland in the Restaurant and Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence, it’s clear that Head Chef Selma Pourbaix’s dedication to culinary excellence is second to none. Here’s what we ate… Our meal began with two delectable entrees; Soufflé du Jour (twice-baked cheese soufflé) and Noix de Saint-Jacques (seared scallops atop mango chilli salsa). Next, we were served a delicious Les Gnocchi with forest mushroom and truffle oil. This was followed by a perfectly cooked Côte De Boeuf (Black Angus Eye fillet with red wine jus and

potatoes) and a sublime dish called Poulet Basquaise from South West France. Consisting of capsicum ratatouille and chicken stuffed with garlic and basil risotto, this was an instant favourite amongst us. To finish off, we indulged in three mouthwatering desserts; Nougat Glacé (homemade nougat ice cream with pistachios, cranberries, and strawberry coulis), Chocolat Noir et Duo de Citrons (decadent dark chocolate tart), and Fromage Du Berger (an array of international cheeses with condiments). And of course, no French dining experience is complete without a drink. Boasting an impressive wine list, you’ll truly be spoiled for choice. Have a bottle at home you’ve been waiting to uncork? You’re in luck, as they also offer BYO on Wednesday and Thursday nights. As a delightful bonus, Haig Rd Bistro’s Christmas hampers are returning this year to popular demand. Featuring homemade macarons and a selection of cheeses, pates, and other summer picnic essentials, they make the perfect gift. Open Friday and Saturday for lunch and Wednesday-Sunday for dinner, visit them to feel the warmth and care of ‘Maman’ herself. Insalata di Polpo e Patate You’ll need: 1kg large Fremantle octopus tentacles 250g salt 5 bay leaves 10 peppercorns 1 small onion, roughly chopped 1 stick celery, roughly chopped 1 carrot, roughly chopped 150ml, plus extra for serving, extra virgin olive oil 3 lemons, 2 for juice, 1 cut into wedges for garnish 400ml white wine 8 bay leaves 8 desiree potatoes, peeled 2 shallots, finely diced 500ml chicken stock 10 sprigs lemon thyme 1 clove garlic 40g Pantelleria capers 80g black olives, cut into quarters 1 bunch flat leaf parsley, finely chopped Salt and pepper to taste

Method: Place the octopus on a rack over a tray and salt generously. Refrigerate overnight. Wash the octopus well in running water and place into a clean pot. Cover with water, add bay leaves, peppercorns, onion, celery, and carrot. Place on low heat and bring to a gentle simmer for one hour. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely in the liquid. Cut four of the potatoes into 2cm cubes and boil in salted water for approximately 10 minutes until they are tender. Drain and set aside. Cut the remaining potatoes into 5cm cubes. Place a saucepan on a medium heat and add 50ml of the olive oil. Add the shallots and sauté

until soft and translucent. Add the potatoes and cook on medium heat without colouring. Deglaze the pan with white wine, season with salt and pepper, and add the stock. Continue to cook on medium heat until potatoes are soft and cooked through. Place in a blender and blend until smooth. Set aside. To make the salsa verde, add the herbs, half of the capers, garlic, remaining olive oil, lemon juice from one lemon and blend until smooth and emulsified. Set aside. Heat a frying pan on medium heat with a tablespoon of oil. Remove the tentacles from the water and pat dry with an absorbent towel. Add

to the frying pan with the cubed potatoes. Fry for a few minutes to give a nice golden colour to both. Cut the octopus into 2cm pieces and mix in a bowl with olives, a splash of olive oil, lemon juice from remaining lemon, capers and a few tablespoons of salsa verde (season to taste). Warm the potato cream on a low heat. Place approximately 100ml of the potato cream at the bottom of a plate. Arrange the dressed octopus and its garnish neatly on the plate. Drizzle a little extra salsa verde and serve with a wedge of lemon. The dish can be plated individually for an elegant presentation or on a platter for a more rustic sharing dish. Now, dig in!

Get ready to elevate your events! From intimate gatherings to grand soirées, here’s the ultimate business round-up to help you perfect the art of hosting. By NATALIE MCGOWAN

FLOSSY Think fairy floss is just for children? Think again. This Byron-based mobile cart spins an array of delicious floss flavours created with the adult palette in mind. Servicing events throughout South East Queensland, they make the perfect cocktail garnish!

Why fairy floss? It’s just so fun and nostalgic. Think warm, hand-spun floss straight from the Flossy cart handed to you on a stick or topping your glass of bubbles.

What inspired Flossy? I just wanted this at my wedding, but it didn’t exist.

Favourite fairy floss flavour of yours? Strawberry Margarita is tangy, sweet, and salty all at once. Also, I can’t stop eating the Salted Caramel with black sea salt!

Tastiest drink/Flossy pairing? The crowd favourite is an Espresso Martini topped with Crème Brûlée floss.

Favourite thing about your job? Is it wrong to say everything? I actually never thought I would say this about work, but I really do love what I do! Eating unlimited floss, creating crazy seasonal flavours, and being surrounded by happy people in the most beautiful venues around Australia. Can it get much better? @FLOSSYBYRONBAY

Most popular of your catering packages?

Crowd favourites are always our arancini, signature lamb ragu pasta, and the slow-cooked lamb shoulder with salsa verde and herbs.

Our family-feasting style dining! This includes antipasti grazing to start, followed by two share-style mains and three side dishes. Perfect for every occasion.

What inspires your work? Family is at the heart of everything we do, and we love it when our clients and their guests feel like they are part of a big Italian family. Seeing people enjoying our food and the ambiance of the event we have created is what we love and reason why we do this.

THE MESSAGE CO. Time to ditch the pen and paper, The Message Co. is the modern-day guest book allowing attendees to leave sometimes funny, sometimes sentimental, and always memorable voice messages. Based in the Gold Coast, this fun party addition ships Australia-wide.

What inspired The Message Co.? At my wedding, a supplier forgot to bring the guestbook. I was so disappointed! I wanted the night to go on forever and to take the memories home with me. Mix that with being a wedding lover and party enthusiast and wanting to play a part in helping people create the perfect event.

What sets The Message Co. apart from the rest?

Our phone styles! Our retro and vintage phones are packed with personality and complement any event style. We also take the time to get to know each client and their venue, which allows us to advise the clients on all the things they can do NOVEMBER 2023

with their audio guestbook and how to get the most out of messages.

How does it work? After picking up the phone the guests will hear a personalised greeting from the party host, then it’s their turn to leave you a message after the beep.

Most memorable audio message you’ve heard? I don’t think I can say that here! I did have the bride contact me after she received her messages to say “OMG, I’m so sorry you had to hear that”. Actually, this happens quite often.

Favourite thing about your job? I absolutely love hearing the reactions from my clients after they have listened to their messages. Hands down the best part of my job! @THE_MESSAGE_CO

Milestone travel

The Prop House Collective excels at creating breathtaking experiences and as the end of the year draws closer, so does the festive party season. Whether it’s an intimate dinner or a formal soirée, there are many styling tips we can offer to elevate your event. For a Christmas dinner party at home, adorn the table with pine garlands mixed in with mood lighting and bonbons. Incorporate frosted poinsettias and iridescent baubles for a touch of festive frosting (find it all in our Coorparoo showroom). Meanwhile, gala dinners can be transformed with themes like Mediterranean Summer or Masquerade Mystery. Engage guests in activities like Secret Santa and holiday trivia, or even dancing to a live band. For those bigger occasions, a roving performer is sure to make an impact. I’d also recommend considering food and beverages that match your theme and enhance the experience. The key to hosting is to infuse the party with creativity this party season, and you can make it one to remember with The Prop House Collective! VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

Be a good ‘mo bro’

Hiding in plain sight

• Ensure you smile and laugh often.

It may surprise you to learn that some patients attending initial consultations don’t have visible veins on their legs, but instead only have unsightly veins on their ankle or foot. They may not have a family history of varicose veins or even symptoms that cause them anything more than a bit of an ache after a busy day. The development of fine but extensive veins fanning over the ankle and foot is called corona phlebectatica. It’s caused by increased pressure on the capillaries and a pooling of blood in the area because of incompetent veins hidden higher up the leg and thigh, most commonly the saphenous vein. Discolouration of the skin in this area is a clinical sign indicating that there is severe underlying venous disease. If left untreated it can lead to serious complications that can cause irreversible damage to the skin, such as lipodermatosclerosis or even ulceration. The good news is this potentially advanced condition can be fully treated in a non-hospital setting with minimal downtime.

DIGITAL MARKETING 101 with Dinushka Gunasekara

Embrace the holiday season

Heard of affiliate marketing?

As we head into the last two months of the year, it’s no secret our beautiful city comes alive. The jacarandas, in their royal bloom, cast a purple spell across the cityscape, shaping the very essence of Brisbane’s festive parties and soirées. Amidst this blossoming scene, the city’s sartorial choices are also on display. Linen and cotton become the chosen fabrics for the men of Brisbane, while pastel palettes of lavenders, soft blues, and greens become more prominent. Each suit is more than mere attire; it is a canvas, narrating stories of the city’s bond with its surrounding beauty. Evenings in Brisbane acquire a luminous charm. The sun might set, but the city’s spirit stays undimmed. Parties sparkle under canopies of fairy lights and laughter merges with melodies. The ambiance is palpable, as if every thread worn and every tune played pays tribute to the fleeting magic of the season.

Any time you pop online is basically taking yourself out for a digital windowshopping trip – you tell yourself you’ll look, don’t touch, and inevitably make a purchase that earns a bombastic side eye from your budget. For businesses, this means snagging prime real estate on the world wide web is essential to getting eyes (and dollars) on your products. That’s where affiliate marketing comes into play. Leaning on the symbiotic relationship between brand and creator, affiliate marketing is a process where publishers or influencers earn a commission by promoting a good or service made by a retailer. Brands get trusted referrals and exposure to new audiences from relevant creators, and in turn creators make a commission – tracked by an affiliate link. With an estimated worth of $8.2 billion in 2022, the affiliate marketing industry truly has revolutionised the marketing game.

The sky’s the limit The future has never looked brighter for five-year-old Jack, who recently underwent life-changing vision therapy. By PENELOPE PELECAS

E

mma-Lea and Josh Parcell’s whole world changed after they discovered their then two-year-old son Jack had night-time blindness. Emma-Lea had a feeling “something was wrong” after noticing Jack continuously run into things at home. After several hospital visits, and a lot of testing, he was diagnosed with a condition called Leber Congenital Amaurosis, a progressive disorder which severely affects vision, particularly in low light. For children like Jack, now five, vision is relatively stable in the first decade of life but begins to decline in adolescence. Most affected individuals are legally blind by their 20th birthday. Emma-Lea and Josh were not going to let that happen and with the help of the Children’s Hospital Foundation they were given a glimmer of hope. Jack’s specific variant (RPE65) made him

a candidate for the new gene therapy, Luxturna. Overjoyed with the news, Emma-Lea and Jack headed down to Sydney for further testing (the treatment isn’t available in Queensland). After about 18 months, the family were given the green light to book in for treatment. Emma-Lea and Jack, who was the first child in Queensland to receive this life-changing treatment, travelled back to Sydney, this time staying for just over a month. “It was hard at times, especially when we had to go down to Sydney and leave our other son at home,” Emma-Lea recalls. “There was a lot of hospital visits, a lot of testing, but we knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel.” And that there was. Two months on, EmmaLea and Josh are already seeing improvements in Jack’s vision. NOVEMBER 2023

“The other night we walked out in the dark and it was absolutely mind-blowing,” she says. “He was so excited. I think mum and dad were more excited. Knowing he could just walk outside was amazing. “I’m grateful for every doctor and the foundation that has helped us get to this place where we are now and make it a reality for Jack.” Emma-Lea hopes Jack’s story will help other families going through a tough time and with the recent launch of the new Children’s Health Queensland Action Centre, supported by the Children’s Hospital Foundation and The Sapphire Committee, she is hoping there is possibility for these treatments to be done on home soil. “It would mean a lot for families if the treatment was available in Queensland.” CHILDRENS.ORG.AU

SHINTO There’s lots to see and do in Japan, with breathtaking landmarks, rich culture, and food aplenty. Travel guru Rose Febo shares her top tips for an unforgettable experience. Contributor ROSE FEBO

A

s a seasoned travel expert, I’ve always been drawn to the allure of Japan. The fusion of ancient traditions and futuristic innovation and the serene landscapes juxtaposed with vibrant cities offer a unique and exotic experience for every traveller. Planning a trip in the new year? Here are my top tips... My first tip for traveling around Japan is to take advantage of the Japan Rail Pass. This pass gives you unlimited access to Japan’s extensive and efficient railway network, including most of the Shinkansen (bullet trains). It’s an economical and convenient way to explore the country – plus, it’s super-fast! Another must-try experience is staying at a traditional Japanese ryokan. These inns offer a peek into Japan’s past with tatami rooms, communal baths, and delectable kaiseki meals. It’s a unique experience that you won’t find anywhere else, and as a travel expert, I highly recommend it. When it comes to food, be adventurous! Japan is seriously a foodie’s paradise. From sushi and ramen to delicious street food like Takoyaki and okonomiyaki, there’s a plethora of dishes to try. And don’t forget to sample the local saké – it’s to die for! Lastly, as a travel expert, I cannot stress enough the importance of respecting local customs. Whether it’s removing your shoes before entering a home or temple, bowing when greeting someone, or maintaining quiet on public transport, showing respect for Japanese customs and etiquette will greatly enhance your travel experience. Japan is a country that’s rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. With expert planning and an open mind, there’s no doubt you’ll have an enjoyable and authentic Japanese experience. An unforgettable voyage It’s not every day a 24-yearold sets out on a gruelling journey to become the youngest person to solo row across the Pacific Ocean. Eliza O’Connor Meet Eliza O’Connor, founder and director of luxury jewellery label, Real Fine Studio. With an array of delicate necklaces, rings, and earrings that all feature ornate natural and lab-grown diamonds, it’s no wonder Eliza’s creations have caught the attention of some of the biggest names in Hollywood! Signature scent...

unbelievably good.

ANOTHER 13 by Le Labo.

What are you most proud of?

Instant pick-me up... Once sentence to introduce yourself... I’m Eliza, from Brisbane, now based in Los Angeles (six years and counting!). After a decade in fashion, I founded my own jewellery brand Real Fine Studio.

The first thing you did this morning... I checked my emails, scrolled through Instagram and then went on a walk with my pup Migo and grabbed an iced oat latte with cinnamon. Balance!

Songs on high rotation... Mama’s boy by Hazlett and xxl by LANY.

Go-to karaoke song: Like a Prayer by Madonna.

Facetiming my mum, she always knows what to say.

Go-to Aussie designer... I love coming home because I get to stock up on all of my favourite Aussie designers – we really do it better! If I had to pick my favourites, I’d say SIR., CAMILLA AND MARC, PJ Femme, Soot., and Zulu & Zephyr.

Next bucket list holiday: The Turks and Caicos Islands! Nothing beats crystal clear water and white sand for me.

You never leave home without… My phone and my jewellery. I feel naked without both!

Can’t put down read: I’m reading Verity at the moment by Colleen Hoover and it’s NOVEMBER 2023

Definitely my upcoming partnership with goop. I started Real Fine Studio two years ago and to be partnering with a brand like goop is a dream come true! Taking meetings in their Santa Monica HQ still feels surreal.

Where do you seek inspiration? For me the key is to never seek inspiration out, rather being open to finding it unexpectedly. I am inspired by my travels and the way people dress and express themselves in different parts of the world. I am also inspired by art and films. Lately I’ve been especially inspired by some of the artisans I work with. I source my gemstones from a lady that has been doing it for over 50 years. We sit and go through stones for hours together and talk about life.
