I WRITE THIS from my hotel room in Cape Town, South Africa as I enjoy a much needed respite. Adventure is truly the soul’s greatest escape and taking time out is what enlightens our minds. How we regard ourselves, how we feel about who we are, and what we have accomplished, is not only about our experiences but about so many factors and facets of our lives. With spring well and truly here, it is time to take a look at the cocktails we’ll be sipping this season because (for obvious reasons) it is time to opt for the beverages with wow-factors (Page 50). From Melbourne Cup to Lorde live at Riverstage and Landcover Polo in the City, it is going to be a November to remember. Talking about things to remember, in a bold move and arguably one of the most exciting announcements this year, Li Cunxin will be returning to the stage for a very special one-night-only performance of The Nutcracker (Page 12). Breaking boundaries, we have Jack Sullivan Bridal on our cover this month. Having grown up in Brisbane, Jack has officially launched his bridal collection in New York. We took a look inside the fashion game and how Jack made his job one he loves, one he wouldn’t change for the world. When it comes to style, it’s the small things that can make the difference, which explains our recent passion for accessories! Rattan is absolutely the perfect addition to any outfit this festive season, and you can see some of our favourite picks on page 41 as well as the three prints taking over this season on page 44.

Li Cunxin returns to the stage for one night only to recreate a classic Christmas tale, marking his first performance in 18 years, writes Siobhan Taylor.
BEST SELLING AUTHOR. Queensland’s 2014 Australian of the Year. Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet. These are just some of the titles Li Cunxin has held over the years, but none more noteworthy than that of Mao’s Last Dancer. Since his defection from the People’s Republic of China in 1981, Li has danced as a principal dancer with the Houston Ballet and the Australian Ballet, at times performing alongside his wife Mary Li (née McKendry), a professional ballet dancer from Rockhampton. Following his retirement from performing in 1999 and while working as a stockbroker, Li published his critically-acclaimed
autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer, in 2003, detailing his life in poverty in the Shandong province of the People’s Republic of China, his life under Mao Zedong’s communist rule, 16-hour days of ballet training, and his eventual career as an international performer. It was in July 2012 when Li, who had maintained strong ties with the ballet community throughout his retirement, was announced as the Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet, taking over the reins of the artistic control and vision of the theatre company. “I wanted to lead Queensland Ballet to become a world-class ballet company, a powerhouse
in dance in the Asia Pacific region, and make a positive difference in the arts and the communities we serve,” comments Li. In a bold move, and arguably one of the most exciting announcements of the greater ballet community this year, Li will be returning to the stage for a very special one-night-only performance of The Nutcracker, produced by Ben Stevenson. Performing the role of Drosselmeyer, Li has adopted a strict training regimen to ensure he is physically and technically capable of performing the routine. “Currently, I have 2.5 months to get myself back
Li Cunxin to a decent condition where I won’t make a fool of myself on stage.” This training involves morning laps in the pool, weight and Pilates training, and, of course, four ballet training sessions each week. “I feel both excited and nervous. I know very well that it won’t be easy for me to get back to my peak condition after 18-years of retirement, so I have to go through quite a bit of pain and agony before I will be able to enjoy it. I hope that my performance will add a little bit of spark to an already magical production of The Nutcracker.” Adopting the iconic role of Drosselmeyer has been its own challenge, says Li, “Drosselmeyer has been in my mind constantly. It’s become an all-consuming living thing in my mind ever since I decided to perform the role! I have been thinking about his character and personality, his narrative, his magic tricks, and of course, his dancing.” Li will be joined by a world-class troupe of performers of exceptional skill. Li comments, “Their standard is high, their artistry is incredible, their passion is absolute, their commitment and dedication to the art form is total, and I feel privileged to be performing amongst them!” One of the performers Li will be sharing the stage with is none other than his wife and formerballet partner, Mary. Li and Mary, who retired from the stage in the early 1990’s, have not performed on stage together for 36 years, interestingly, since a 1991 production of The Nutcracker. “Mary and I found each other through dancing. She was an exceptional artist and I was heartbroken when she retired due to our daughter’s deafness. To be able to share the stage with her again after all these years will be truly special!” Now a regular installment of Queensland Ballet’s stylemagazines.com.au
IN A BOLD MOVE, AND ARGUABLY ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENTS OF THE GREATER BALLET COMMUNITY THIS YEAR, LI WILL BE RETURNING TO THE STAGE FOR A VERY SPECIAL ONE-NIGHT-ONLY PERFORMANCE OF THE NUTCRACKER. yearly calander, this production of The Nutcracker will be particularly magical. Stevenson’s masterful storytelling brings out the essence of the classic Christmas tale, showcasing the magical journey through the Land Of Snow and The Kingdom of Sweets. With vivid and colourful costumes and Tchaikovsky’s classic music, the production is sure to be an enchanting experience. During the five years Li has been Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet, he has help bring to life many incredible productions, such as the box office hit Swan Lake and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The 2018 season features La Bayadere,
Carmen & Firebird, Cinderella, and Bespoke. While this unprecedented and highly anticipated performance is sure to be a highlight of the ballet season, it is still unsure whether or not we can expect to see Li on stage again. “Right now, all I am focused on is this one performance. Beyond that? We’ll see…” View Li’s incredible journey at the Museum Of Brisbane throughout December, at their exclusive and intimate exhibition, Mao’s Last Dancer: A Portrait of Li Cunxin. CONSCIOUS THINKING Guy Sebastian takes his sound to new levels on his forthcoming album, Conscious, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. AFTER GUY SEBASTIAN rose to fame as the first Australian Idol winner in 2003, no one could’ve imagined he would become the only Australian male artist to achieve six number one singles and two number one albums in chart history. Over the course of his music career, Guy has had massive success at home and overseas, and now the husband and father of two is back with his 10th studio album, Conscious, which he says is one of his most creative projects to date. We chat to Guy about his new album and why he spent longer on this project than any other. How has the creative process of Conscious differed to your previous albums? I wanted to push my sound to new places so I tried new things. I switched up my music software and sought out new synths and sounds to create a soulful blend of organic instruments that sit within an electronic landscape. I’ve teamed up with some great local producers and produced some tracks on my own, which pushed me past my self doubt. I spent way longer on this project than any other before as I wanted to get it right. How have your personal goals fuelled the album? It really went hand in hand. I’ve trained my body pretty hard lately and I nearly gave up many times. I pushed through the pain of preexisting injuries and when I wanted to give up I would tell myself to keep going! If I didn’t give up in the gym, later that day I didn’t give up in the studio when I hit a wall. I guess it taught me to be more disciplined and have a better work rate.
CATCH GUY SEBASTIAN’S ‘CONSCIOUS TOUR’ LIVE ON STAGE AT QPAC CONCERT HALL THURSDAY 2ND NOVEMBER
What can we expect from Conscious? It definitely has a lot more of a R&B/soul electronica vibe than anything I’ve done before. At least since my second album Beautiful Life. The Conscious tour kicks off this month, what can audiences expect from the show? It’s my most creative and soulful tour thus far with particular attention paid to the translation of the album’s intricate sounds to the live stage. It’s going to sound pretty sick instrumentally and with Gary and Carmen on background vocals, of course the vocals will be on point!
How do you balance being a husband, father and musician? Family and loved ones always come first no matter what. What I do has unique challenges, but we can get through it all because we love each other so much. For me, the key is making sure the time I spend with my family is focused. It’s easy as a creative person to get distracted. There’s no denying that having a family means I have to sacrifice certain opportunities but they will never mean more to me than keeping my family safe and loved. READ MORE ONLINE

A YEAR ON THE RISE Siobhan Taylor speaks with Amy Shark about transitioning from Triple J Unearthed obscurity to a household name. GOLD COAST SINGER/SONGWRITER Amy Shark has had a year that most artists only dream of. From pub-obscurity to selling out international shows, Shark’s meteoric rise has been spectacular from the beginning. Shark first uploaded her debut track, Adore, to Triple J’s Unearthed platform in early 2016 before the hugely popular radio station selected it for regular rotation. From here, Shark has been ticking off milestones and achievements without pause. Widespread acclaim. Sold-out national tour. Placing second on the prestigious Triple J Hottest 100 competition. 25 million streams on Spotify for Adore. Six Aria nominations. Without a doubt, Amy Shark has captivated audiences across the world. Whether she is dancing with abandon on stage or capturing audiences’ attention with her relatable tales of heartbreak and youth, Shark has emerged as an artist that understands how to fuse romantic themes with indie-pop in a way that is fresh, personal and experimental. Following years of performing locally in pubs, this seemingly overnight-fame is the result of years of hard work, sacrifice, and passion. Speaking of her
“I DON’T SAY THIS OFTEN, BUT I AM INCREDIBLY PROUD OF MYSELF AND MY TEAM. BEING RECOGNISED BY THE INDUSTRY MEANS SO MUCH.”
years performing locally in pubs, Shark comments “I wouldn’t take it back, honestly. Every time I walk onto stage I remember those days and it just makes me strive to achieve as much as I can. It made me appreciate what I have now.” While she is now touring internationally alongside acts such as homegrown-favourites Vance Joy and Sia, Shark isn’t swayed by her newfound fame. “I don’t really think of that kind of stuff. I am just Amy from the Gold Coast who writes music. It’s great to be recognised and acknowledged, but that’s not why I write music or do what I do.” The recent 2017 Aria announcement saw Shark impressively-nominated for six awards, including best female artist, breakthrough artist, and the coveted song of the year and album of the year
awards. “Knowing I will always be a 6-time Aria nominated artist probably hit me deeper than I thought it would. It was very humbling. I always believed my music was good enough, and to achieve this recognition makes me finally realise others do too.” READ MORE ONLINE

BALANCING ACT We chat to Mortgage Choice Business Manager, Hanna Cunliffe, about how she manages to juggle career and family.
MANY WORKING PARENTS will be quick to tell you that finding the ideal work and life balance can be tricky territory to navigate, especially when you’re a business owner and manager. For Hanna and Matt Cunliffe, raising two children and continuing to build and grow their Brisbane City and Brisbane North Mortgage Choice locations is all in a day’s work. With an ever changing and demanding work and home life, Hanna finds the balance comes from creating a happy, peaceful environment for her family, while still prioritising time for herself. “I make sure that I get to a Pilates class at least 2-3 times a week,” she says. “Exercise is so important to keep the mind clear and the body healthy and it’s really the only time I get without the kids or work commitments.”
I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO DO THIS WITHOUT AN AMAZING TEAM BEHIND US. IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE CHILDREN.
Away from her family life, Hanna is passionate about helping her clients reach their own financial goals and does her best to ensure that their property dreams become a reality. It’s true that hard work really does pay off as Hanna and Matt’s two Mortgage Choice locations have seen them take home a number of industry awards, including the 2016 QLD Business Excellence Award. Unlike your average husband and wife relationship, Hanna and Matt work closely together as they run their businesses, but the pair never underestimate the importance of a strong household foundation. “Although Matt and I work together, we rarely find that we have any issues,” Hanna says. “Being open with a clear expectation and trust in each other is what lets us both excel in the different areas of our work.” Having two children, one school age and the other an 8-month-old baby, Hanna is continually attempting to master the balance, while still having enough down time with her family. “Some parts of the month get extremely busy and I get very little time to breathe,” she says. “I can continue to work on my career, albeit at a slightly slower pace, while still being an active and available mother and supportive wife,” Hanna says. “I wouldn’t be able to do this without an amazing team behind us. I’ve always said it takes a village to raise children.” MORTGAGE CHOICE BRISBANE CITY 355 QUEEN ST, BRISBANE P 3211 7744 MORTGAGECHOICE.COM.AU/MATTCUNLIFFE
LOVE IS IN THE AIR Christmas is just around the corner. Is a proposal on the cards for you this year?
CHRISTMAS IS USUALLY a time when families come together to celebrate the festive season, so naturally it makes for an extremely popular time for marriage proposals. Being able to share the news of an engagement face-to-face and of course, show-off the ring in person, is a special gift both to the happy couple and their families. It could be argued that gifting jewellery is the ultimate way to give the gift of love. Kim Davison of Kimmison Jewellery on the Gallery Level of Brisbane Arcade says jewellery can be worn most of the time so it serves as a constant reminder of the gift giver. “An engagement ring, wedding or eternity band are all symbols of love and commitment,” she says. When it comes to finding unique gifts for Christmas, Brisbane Arcade has a hoard of options, whether they be jewellery, vintage watches, eyewear, fashion or speciality gifts, ensuring that your loved one is assured a very special and non-mass produced or a gift that can
be purchased in any old shopping centre. The staff at Brisbane Arcade have noticed that the trend in engagements at the moment is for couples to visit together and decide on the engagement ring, with the groom-to-be returning to collect the ring at an unknown time to his partner. This way, the bride-to-be gets the exact ring she wants however there is still a surprise element with when and how the proposal happens. Some gentlemen are happy to propose with a loose diamond or gemstone and return with partner to design the ring together. As for any tips for the brides to be when it comes to dropping hints on what style of ring they like, Kim has some advice. “Pinterest, Instagram and magazine clippings are a great way to collate ideas,” she says. “Guys should take note of brides-to-be social media accounts.” BRISBANE ARCADE P 3231 9777 BRISBANEARCADE.COM.AU

Personal Touch IF YOU’VE STARTED shopping for Christmas gifts, but are hunting for something a little more personal this year, there’s still time to create the type of unique gift that will be treasured for years to come. As a family owned and operated business, Robert White Jewellers is focused on offering every customer a personalised experience. A qualified goldsmith himself, Robert works together with his exceptionally talented staff including his daughter Hannah, a Diamond Grader, and son James to create individual handmade jewellery. Their passion for their craft shines through in everything they do. The business has been crafting classic handmade pieces since it was established by S. Knowles and Sons in 1878, and then later purchased by Robert in 1974. Just as no two customers’ needs are the same, no two pieces created by Robert White Jewellers are identical. They guarantee that each item of jewellery is individually drawn and designed just for you, before being handcrafted by Robert and the in-house master jewellers. There’s nothing they love more than collaborating with customers throughout the process – from the initial phase of working out designs and selecting stones, right through to seeing the look on the customer’s face when they reveal the finished product for the first time. FOUNDED FOURTEEN YEARS ago in Sydney’s Bondi beach by designer and artist, Camilla Franks, CAMILLA has captured the imagination of the world with its vibrant and bespoke bohemian lifestyle offering. AND BABY MAKES THREE Zoe Marshall speaks to Tamille Head about how life has changed since falling pregnant. FOR SOME TIME now, Zoe Marshall has been very vocal about her struggles with endometriosis and subsequent fertility issues. So naturally, it was a welcome surprise when her and husband, rugby league legend, Benji, announced their pregnancy on Father’s Day this year. After a long battle with severe endometriosis, leaving her doubting she would ever carry a child, Zoe went to Chinese medical practitioner Dr Shuquan Liu in February in an attempt to fall pregnant, embarking on a two-week no food detox. While she received unwavering support from her husband throughout the process, others were not quite so understanding. “When you’re doing something so radical like not stylemagazines.com.au
eating, people get worried,” she says. After discovering she was pregnant on her 33rd birthday, Zoe felt a mixture of relief and happiness because she didn’t think it would happen so soon. “Falling pregnant was such a shock. We had only been in our second month of the pregnancy program with Dr Liu.” It hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Zoe, however, citing she struggled with morning sickness and often felt isolated throughout her first trimester. “Pregnancy is brutal, the first trimester I was so sick. For weeks, I felt like I had the worst hangover of my life. I couldn’t socialise or even leave bed some days,” she says.
True to form, Zoe has begun documenting her pregnancy on her personal blog and with her near thirty thousand Instagram followers, promising to share her experience along the way. On the topic of the babies gender, for now the Marshalls have decided not to find out. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t been privy to the constant questions. I ask if Benji is hoping for a son to carry on his footballing legacy. “That’s such a clichéd question,” she laughs, telling me that it’s often the first thing people ask her. “We just want our baby to be its own individual person.” READ MORE ONLINE

NEW YORK CITY CALLING Meet the bridal designer who has taken on the concrete jungle, writes Tamille Head. GROWING UP IN Brisbane as the son of internationally recognised and award-winning bridal designer, Wendy Sullivan, Jack Sullivan’s life has been heavily entrenched in the fashion and design industry. Working on the business side of his mother’s bridal line, a gown he doodled on a notepad was produced, sparking his desire to create an eponymous label. After years of studying design under Wendy’s guidance, Jack Sullivan Bridal was launched in 2012, creating his own unique style, reflecting a combination of oldfashioned elegance and modern-day playfulness. The Brisbane boy is going from strength to strength, having recently returned from showing his latest collection at New York Bridal Fashion Week. “It was something that I kind of dreamed of, but didn’t think would happen,” he says. “When the opportunity came up a couple of years ago to do New York Bridal Fashion Week it was so surreal. I love that I get to go back every year.” Jack had the honour of shooting his latest collection at The Intercontinental Barclay in the exclusive Vanderbilt Suite. The recently renovated suite, with its old-world glamour and modern-day styling tied in well with Jack’s current collection and the general ethos of his label. While his time in New York involved attending launch parties and mingling with designers he’d always admired against the New York City sky line, Jack’s passion for design is what keeps him going back time and time again. “It was a pretty amazing experience and something I will always remember,” Jack says. “My whole goal in this fashion game, has been just make sure this is my job. I don’t want to do anything else, I love it.” READ MORE ONLINE

FASHION WITHOUT FLESH Making wiser fashion decisions has never been easier, writes Kiri Johnston. IN TODAY’S SOCIETY, more and more people are converting to a vegan diet not only for the amazing health benefits, but also due to their concern for the environment and, most importantly, the wellbeing of animals. Today, people are also making more conscious decisions to convert their wardrobe to a crueltyfree zone. It’s time to start thinking about where our daily-use items come from. Billions of animals pay the price every year for us to wear animal products - this puts a significant amount of stress, pain and suffering on these innocent creatures, only for us to wear as ‘fashion’. Aside from that, PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) reports that “the production of wool, fur, and leather contributes to climate change, land devastation, pollution, and water contamination”. There are many plant-based, sustainable, and renewable fabrics available, including hemp, cotton, bamboo and linen, which are all great alternatives for the Australian climate. If you’re concerned about the quality of animalfree products, there are plenty of companies out there that produce pieces that are as durable as they are fashionable. Also, some of our favourite luxury fashion labels are latching onto this revolution and making a change by bringing out their own cruelty-free lines, including Stella 34

Pop on a pair of freshies and exude it-girl vibes in an instant!
Inject some cool into your look by adding a pair of freshies, writes Tamille Head. FASHION IS AN extreme sport in its own right, so it’s no wonder that the style set continue to embrace the sneaker trend. Whether in Paris, New York or Milan, one thing remained constant at Fashion Week this season: sneakers are here to stay. From the Italians to the Brits, they all had one clear message: add a sneaker to your look. With our laid-back lifestyle here in Brisbane, it’s no wonder we’re seeing many retailers get around the trend. But, the sneaker is no new phenomenon. From the runway, to the pavement, take a look around and you’ll notice that everyone is wearing sneakers. And for good reason.
In addition to throwing off all of the it-girl vibes, sneakers offer the kind of blister-free comfort that a heel will never match. No longer reserved for the gym or that early morning run, sneakers are now more versatile than ever. The demand for the humble trainer has skyrocketed thanks to the growth of the athleisure trend. From fresh white kicks paired with pretty florals at Zimmermann to bold neon kicks popping up in street style albums, sneaker-chic style can’t put a foot wrong. How do you begin to make your foray into this unchartered territory, you ask? Take baby steps if need be. Begin with a classic white sneaker,

WITH A BACKGROUND in fashion, studying in the United States and then setting up her own fashion agency for 15 years, Chiu-Ling Lee saw a gap in the market for a place to collect the best of all beach lifestyle fashion and accessories. And so, Blue Bungalow was born. From workplace to weekend, or weekday basics to resort wear, Blue Bungalow accommodates for the modern woman in all her dimensions. Originally set up as an online store, Chiu wanted to make online shopping easy and accessible for the generation that has had to adopt the new way of shopping. Chiu has been operating Blue Bungalow for four years and has recently expanded the store to include both fashion and beach lifestyle. It is her mission to encourage confidence through practical style advice, quality assurance and personal service. “Our fashion and life philosophy here is life is

CHRISTIAN DIOR: A RETROSPECTIVE Siobhan Taylor examines the rich history of Dior, one of the most prestigious couture houses, and it’s unique affinity with Australia. THERE ARE FEW names in fashion that have had as lasting an impact as Christian Dior, who opened his eponymous fashion house in 1946, having previously worked as a fashion illustrator and designer alongside the likes of Pierre Balmain. It was Christian Dior’s insightful approach to the female form that would spark a renaissance of French couture, and become the start of a fashion empire that would change the face of couture. From dramatic evening dresses to sweeping ball gowns, Dior’s experimentation with volume, form and silhouette, most notably in the iconic New Look silhouette of the 1950’s, revolutionised women’s fashion. Beloved by grand couturiers, critics, members of royalty and aristocracy, and Hollywood, Dior was an artist at a time when the world craved beauty. “We were emerging from the period of war, of uniforms, of women-soldiers built like boxers. I drew women-flowers, soft shoulders, fine waists like liana and wide skirts like corolla,” Dior said. To celebrate the emblematic work of Christian Dior and the 70th anniversary of the House of Dior, the National Gallery of Victoria has played host to The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture, the largest Dior retrospective to be held in Australia, and potentially the 156-yearold Melbourne gallery’s most successful fashion exhibition ever. The exhibition showcases the history of the prestigious fashion house from its establishment in 1947 until today, highlighting the brand’s evolution over the last 70 years. Featuring over 140 stunning garments as well as display sketches, photographs, and other archival material, the exhibit celebrates the work of the seven designers who have played key roles in shaping Dior’s place in history: Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri, who joined the house last July as the first woman to head the couture house. The House of Dior has a particularly unique affinity and relationship with Australia, wherein David Jones was host to the historic Spring 1948 fashion parade that was the first complete Dior collection to be shown outside of Paris. BEANS AND DEGASSING
SAY YES TO COLOURED GEMS
THEY SAY HOW you celebrate New Year’s Eve is a reflection of the year to come. What more excuse do you need to spend it in style? Whether you are hosting an intimate gathering or a large sale event, luxe decorations and styling are essential to bring the New Year in with a bang. Now is the time to be thinking of festive themes, styling and décor to make your celebration stand out from the rest. Take inspiration from the magic of New Years by incorporating luxe linens and polished finishes into each aspect. Think of your event as an experience that sets the tone for the night. Base the look from elements that emulate style trends from the year that was to evoke a sense of reflection and nostalgia. From the glimmer of sequins to laces and fur, 2017 was a year of textures, so be sure to source your furnishings with this in mind and make for a look that stimulates the senses. Use your space effectively and don’t forget to ensure there is room for the celebrations!
FRESH IS BEST? Let’s open the discussion on the gassy world of fresh coffee beans to understand why “fresh” isn’t always best. Like a fine wine, freshly roasted beans get better with age, to an extent. When coffee is roasted, gases form inside the bean. Post roast, these gases start to trickle out. CO2 can escape so quickly that it negatively affects the flavour of your coffee by creating an uneven extraction. Degassing varies depending on the bean varietal and duration of roast. It can take anywhere from four days for filter and up to 10 days for espresso until the coffee is ready to brew. Another view is that coffee goes ‘bad’ and can’t be used after two weeks. After degassing, oxygen starts to make its way into your beans. This is called oxidation and is the main cause of staleness. The ideal ‘peak’ flavour times usually fall between day nine and 15, but can still be enjoyed later than this with flavour deteriorating. Always consult your barista or roaster on how many days you should wait until brewing in order to find that sweet spot.
WHEN IT COMES to custom jewellery, colour has been a popular choice over diamonds, but it’s important to consider factors such as a gem’s hardness and your lifestyle. • Distinctly Australian, Champagne and Cognac diamonds have a hardness of 10/10, but are considerably less expensive so you can have a larger gemstone. • Morganites, Emeralds and Aquamarines are perfect for dress rings and special occasion jewellery. • Sapphires are a jeweller’s best friend and come in a variety of shades. With a hardness of 9/10, they are durable for everyday wear and an excellent choice for an engagement ring. • Alexandrite’s have chameleon-like qualities. Although they have a hardness of 8.5/10, it’s important to be mindful when wearing them as they are a rare find. Don’t be afraid of being different, be afriad of being the same as everyone else. Book a design consultation to see how we can bring your jewellery design ideas to life!

Urbane continues to reignite the senses with one of Brisbane’s most refined restaurant experiences, writes Christie Sutherland. DEGUSTATION DINING IS one of the must unique and indulgent culinary experiences one can enjoy, and I would say that Brisbane’s Urbane Restaurant does one of the very best. With four different degustation styles to choose from, including five and seven-course options as well as omnivore and herbivore menus, Urbane has thoughtfully crafted an impeccable degustation experience. With award-winning Argentinian Chef, Alejandro Cancino at the helm, I knew we were in for a treat. As the dishes arrived, it was clear that the Urbane team had meticulously and artfully arranged each dish to satisfy all the senses, with natural elements such as driftwood and micro46
herb gardens incorporated into the dish and pleasing the eyes just as much as the tastebuds. We kick-started our courses with the Chefs Special Snack of which the tomato consommé was quick to standout. Next was a scallop dish, paired with velvety pumpkin and citrusy mandarin. The uncomplicated pairing of light and zesty elements was an ideal introduction to the seven courses. The next course was the mushroom tortellini. This refined dish was fresh, creamy and perfectly balanced, allowing the rich mushroom flavour to shine through. The simple yet rich flavour of this dish was the perfect intermediary course, as it quieted the palette before the subsequent courses. We were then delighted by an exceptional
dish of Cobia dressed with pil-pil sauce, a Spanish sauce of olive oil and chili. The classic sauce was exceptionally prepared, and perfectly complimented the cobia. Another dish that delighted us was the Wagyu Beurre Blanc, which was cooked to perfection! Juicy and tender, the meat was cut with a butter knife and melted in the mouth. Not only is Alejandro co-owner of Urbane but his other passion lies as the owner of Fënn Foods, which is a supplier of the most ethically sourced foods that doesn’t compromise on quality and taste. It’s obvious that his sustainable approach and dynamic palate is what makes the food at Urbane sing. NOVEMBER17

FLAVOUR AND FLAIR Experience all the flavours of an authentic Brazilian feast right here in the river city. SETTING THE BENCHMARK for everything that is good about Brazilian barbecue is not just their mission statement at Navala, it’s their culture. Since 2014, the Brisbane restaurant has been serving their famous Churrasco to the people of Brisbane, offering sensational, mouthwatering chicken, lamb, pork, beef, fish and seafood seven days a week. Churrasco is a must-do Brazilian experience to tick off the foodie bucket list. Portuguese and Spanish for ‘barbeque’, churrasco is a method of grilling beef, chicken, lamb or pork on the purpose built churrasqueira barbeque grill. The meat is cooked on large skewers and roasted across kosher South American charcoal and
wood embers, allowing those extra flavours to really sink in. Navala captures the simple splendour and tradition of ancient cooking methods and delivers them to your table. But it’s not all about the meat at Navala. A lineup of sides, from mixed salads to pinto beans, chinese broccoli, polenta, coconut rice and chips are dished up to enhance the flavours of the barbequed meat; the sweet starchiness adding acidity, to cut through the generous quantities of tallow and oil from the meats. The selection of
South American sauces from their house made chipotle sauce to the malagueta piri-piri sauce, Brazilian chili, tomato salsa to their gorgeous harbanero mustard and chimichurri sauce keep the meats swimming in flavour. Every time you visit Navala Brazilian Barbecue, you will enjoy a memorable dining experience, with outstanding quality in everything from the food to the service and entertainment. AN OLD FAVOURITE This old favourite is a charming surprise, discovers Tamille Head. THE WATERLOO HOTEL is a Brisbane landmark and iconic watering hole. Recent renovations have seen the former majesty of the building restored, complemented by a luxurious interior. My guest and I arrive in the midst of the busy lunch time rush and are greeted by the friendly wait staff. After ordering cocktails from the sprawling cocktail lounge, we find a cosy booth to be seated. Our dining experience starts with a plate of salt and pepper squid. Spicy, zesty and with the perfect amount of crunch, it goes down a treat with a refreshing Aperol Spritz. Next came seared scallops plated with spicy chorizo, creamy guacamole and pico de gallo. While an unusual combination, the melt-in-yourmouth scallops were a highlight of the meal. The main courses, a selection of easy-to-share
Salt and pepper squid & seared scallops dishes, follow. The Turkish lahmacun pizza arrives first and is quickly devoured, while the tender spiced lamb with delicious toppings and creamy yoghurt sauce is mouthwatering in its own right. We both enjoy the saltiness of the slices. Finally comes the crispy pale ale-battered Australian kingfish. The fish is clearly fresh and deliciously accompanied with crunchy chips and a light garden salad. The accompanying tartae sauce
is a nice surprise, with hints of pickle. From seamless service to an impressive menu, The Waterloo Hotel makes the perfect spot for lunch or dinner, just a stone’s throw from the CBD. WATERLOO HOTEL CNR ANN ST & COMMERCIAL RD, NEWSTEAD P 3719 4170 WATERLOOHOTEL.COM.AU

A TIPPLE OR TWO With the silly season in full swing, Emmy-Lou McKean takes a look at the cocktails we’ll be sipping this summer. THERE IS NO denying that when we treat ourselves to a cocktail that most of us opt for the beverage with wow-factor (for obvious reasons). But it seems that as consumers are exposed to a bevvy of quality spirits and access to endless education on the industry online, we are starting to think more about what’s actually in our crystal cocktail glass rather than what it looks like. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a shift in the spirits industry as once upon a time cocktails were created in a bid to hide the taste of unpalatable spirits. But through education and experimentation, today consumers are thirsty for cocktails that are proudly stripped back to two or three ingredients and how they showcase a new wave of expertly distilled spirits. Here’s our favourite Brisbane cocktails worth splashing your cash for this summer. 50

TURN UP THE BASE Take it back-to-basics and rediscover how to perfect your foundation for a seamless base. MANY OF US have a love/hate relationship with foundation: while we love how it evens our skintone and hides any blemishes, it can be difficult to perfect and your application routine can change day to day depending on your skin, the products you use, or even the weather. These tips will help. Only apply primer where necessary. Depending on your skin, you might not need to apply primer to your entire face. If you get an oily T-zone around 2pm, prep your skin each morning by applying a matifying primer to your T-zone before your foundation and powder. Add an illuminating formula for a natural glow. For a slightly dewy finish and a natural glow, mixing a pea-size drop of luminizer to your foundation can add radiance to your skin tone. For a subtle, natural highlight, apply the mixture to only the bridge of your nose and cheekbones.

A COMMITTED INTIMATE relationship is the most difficult thing to get right, but with effort and understanding it enables us to live a healthier, longer life. Partners must put the relationship above everything else and accept each other’s foibles. STAYING ON TRACK It’s heating up in Brisbane and LifeShape Clinic Dietitian, Nicola Moore, is here to help us navigate soiree season. THERE ARE MANY temptations to indulge in over summer. However, with a little planning, you can come out the other side of New Years with your health intact. “Whenever you have an event, have a plan,” Nicola says. “Plan ahead and drive to parties so you won’t be tempted to over-indulge in too many drinks.” On that note, now is a great time to start a food diary. Research shows that those who keep daily food diaries lose twice as much weight as those who don’t. “While we’re on accountability, don’t let exercise stylemagazines.com.au
slip off the agenda because you’re in holiday mode!” Nicola says. “Now that the days are longer, use it to full advantage for late night walks and swims. Get the family out and about in the great weather and include physical activity in your day.” Now that it’s heating up, don’t forget to stay hydrated. Water is essential for keeping your body healthy and plays a key role in weight loss. “Research shows that people who drink a glass of water before each meal eat less and lose more
weight than those who don’t,” says Nicola. “Try drinking a large glass of water and wait 10 minutes before you decide whether to eat.” If you need help taking control of your weight this summer, consider investing in an Accredited Practising Dietitian to set manageable goals and keep you accountable. GROWING GREAT JAWS
COMMIT TO YOUR SKIN
IT’S AMAZING HOW many people need braces these days. Yet in primitive societies untouched by our modern way of life, there is still plenty of room for all the teeth. Research is showing that a change in the way we function is contributing to the development of smaller jaws. Surprisingly, teeth are not the problem, but a failure to stimulate the normal development of the jaws that has led to this modern society anomaly. To grow great jaws 5 things need to be in place for life: 1. No mouth breathing. The nose is for breathing, the mouth is for eating. 2. Lips together. 3. Tongue on roof of your mouth at rest and during swallowing, never between your teeth. 4. Chewing hard fibrous food. 5. We need ALL our teeth. An extraction is an amputation. Great jaws mean a great airway and your airway is your gateway to good health for life. Jaw development is a high priority at James Street Dentists.
WHEN IT COMES to skincare, a correct skin diagnosis is essential to determine the right course of action in clinic and at home. We believe that educating our clients to understand that combining the right skin treatments and home care will ensure optimum results. As therapists, we see clients with all different skin conditions and it is our job to find a treatment solution. The most important first step is having a client make a commitment to their skin and following through diligently with our recommendations on how to treat their skin concerns. This includes receiving professional skin treatments and using the correct cosmeceutical grade skin products at home. Cosmeceuticals contain active ingredients that penetrate and target on a cellular level and need to be prescribed by a qualified skin therapist after a thorough skin diagnosis, whereas skin products sold over the counter work only superficially, and results cannot be guaranteed. “Know the difference, see the difference” is the motto we live by at The Brow and Skin Studio.
MELASMA IS A form of hormonal pigmentation that is often difficult to treat. Dr Davin Lim, a laser and aesthetic dermatologist uses combination therapy to improve pigmentation and skin texture. ‘The key to treating this form of pigmentation is the use of the very latest lasers that deliver energy in small bursts in combination with compounded vitamin A, B and C creams. 95% of melasma cases will start to show improvement within 2 weeks. As melasma is a chronic condition it is important to treat pigmentation, place the condition in remission, then tailor a melasma prevention program. Melasma can be variable in its presentation, some patients may have deeper pigmentation than others, ethnic race also plays a key role in what treatment modality and what types of lasers I select. Brisbane, with it’s high UV index has one of the highest rates of melasma in the World, however with new technology and better understanding of this condition, dermatologists are now in a better position to treat this once ‘untreatable condition’.

BRASSY HAIR HAPPENS to everyone, but the good news is, there are ways to bash brass when it appears and to avoid that unwanted warmth in the first place. Climate, chemicals and natural elements, such as chlorine, tap water and salt water can all have an impact on the condition of our hair. The more damaged the hair, the less likely it is able to hold colour and will therefore turn brassy a lot faster. If brassiness is becoming a problem, express your concerns with your hairdresser, and you can come up with a treatment plan. Here’s some tips to keep those brassy tones out of your locks: • Invest in quality products such as blonde shampoo. • Book in for a toner in between colour appointments to extend the wear. • Have your hair coloured every 4-6 weeks to keep brass at bay. We’re all different, and some are more prone to brass than others. Keep you hair in tip-top condition and say goodbye to brass for good.
MELBOURNE CUP MARKS the start of the party season for most women. What dress are you going to wear? Heels or flats? Your choices may be determined by your venous health. Next year, don’t drop your hemline and cover that patch of spider veins or feel the need to book in a spray tan to camouflage the varicose vein on your shin. Instead, be proactive and come in for a consultation including full medical examination followed by an ultrasound investigation. Most patients require multiple sessions over a few months to achieve optimal results. From start to finish, you’ll be taken care of and we also offer complimentary post treatment reviews for you to ensure the procedure’s success. Your treatment plan is valid for 12 months, so you are under no obligation to book in straight away. Booking in advance offers you the freedom to choose treatment days and accommodate work and family commitments. All our treatments are walk-in/walk-out so you can dance your way off to the next party.

Searching for a solution to seasonal skin squabbles? Dive into these skin therapies straight from the sea, writes Jade Horrobin. IT MIGHT STEM from a childhood filled with mermaid dreams or my long-standing love for the coast, but I’m of the opinion there’s not much the ocean can’t fix. While everyone knows a trip to the beach will cure your soul, it also holds the solution to a long list of pesky skin issues. Using salts to treat our sad and sorry bodies isn’t revolutionary. But what about rubbing salt on your face? At first glance, the prognosis is dry and irritated skin. But sea-salt infused products, primed with natural sodium and minerals has a mindboggling effect on our skin. Products like the

Coast to Coast Replenishing cleansing milk $24.95
La Mer Cleansing oil with ionizing sea-salts and marine oils or the Coast to Coast Replenishing cleansing milk are a foolproof start to any siren’s skin care. The benefits don’t just stop with sea-salt. The same goes for seaweed, sea cucumber and abalone. Seaweed is a straight up wonder plant, rich in minerals, amino acids, vitamins and other trace elements. There’s no doubt about it, kelp is the MVP of ocean treatments, and all seaweed treatments are holy-grail worthy for one reason or another. Got acne? Seaweed is high in anti-bacterial
properties and works to draw out toxins and impurities. Inching ever closer to 40? Seaweed contains potent antioxidants and is known for its cell regenerating properties and boosting elasticity. The Seaweed moisturising essence from Hola makes a noticeable addition to even the most comprehensive of skin care regimes. From ionising sea-salt to moisturizing kelp oil and abalone extracts, the sea is an endless Mecca for skin therapies. As the warmer weather brings your skin troubles out to play, it’s time to head starboard and look to the ocean. NOVEMBER17

I basically grew up within the industry,” he says. “Once you have a passion for something, it really finds you. What guy doesn’t like lasers?” With over a decade’s experience in the industry, Dr Lim continues to present at international and national conferences regularly each year. Continued research and working with top medical research companies including Fraxel and Cynosure, has allowed Dr Lim to travel the world on lecture circuits, teaching and learning from others. Dr Lim and the team at Fiori Institute are passionate about shaking the stigma around clients wanting to look better, believing that everyone has the right to feel good about who they are.
Dr Davin Lim
“We work closely with our clients to achieve this,” Dr Lim says. “Just a couple of years ago no one was admitting to having wrinkle relaxer and dermal filler, and now, the younger generation have grasped these treatments with both hands and flaunt them.” As no one body is the same and no one device will suit everyone, Fiori offers the widest range of body contouring devices in Brisbane, including CoolSculpting, Cooltech and SculpSure. Another highly successful summer body treatment is skin tightening. Fiori offers Thermage, Ultherapy and Endymed 3Deep. These treatments can be used in conjunction with body contouring or as stand-alone treatments. Fiori offers medical skin and body solutions in a retail environment, making their services more accessible to everyone. By bringing affordable, effective medical treatments to a greater consumer audience, Fiori Institute stands out amongst its competitors in the industry. You no longer need to sneak a visit to a cosmetic or plastic surgery practice and pay high end prices, or endure a lengthy waiting list to see a specialist. With Fiori Institute located in Westfield, looking and feeling your best has never been more convenient.
You shouldn’t feel guilty about being who you want to be. Own you.

ADJECTIVE: matte 1. (of a surface or colour) dull and flat; without a shine. Let’s be honest: we’re pretty blessed on the weather front here in Brisbane. But as summer approaches and the mercury rises, we’re reminded of those long, hot days that often see our makeup melting down our faces. Not cute. While a dewy glow is always a good idea in theory, come summertime we’re often left looking like a shiny, oily mess instead. A word to the wise: if it looks like you could fry an egg on your face, it might be time to think about switching to a matte look. Make your base work for you by instilling the powers of a mattifying primer or foundation. With the right products, matte makeup will control oil, prevent shine and stay in place all day. The matte look requires a little extra effort than that dewy look you’ve been sporting all winter long. That said, you don’t want to look cakey or as if you’re wearing a mask. That’s where mattifying primers come in handy. Applying a mattifying primer before foundation will ensure that your base goes the distance. In order to prevent shine in oily skin, opt for water-based moisturisers, alcohol-free tonics, oil-free products and mild cleansers that do not

dry out the skin as it’s forcing it to produce even more oil. But alas, what if you reside in dry skin town? For skin that is more prone to dryness than oiliness, it’s important to moisturise the face well before applying matte makeup to avoid highlighting any dryness. Now that you’re armed with the knowledge and know-how, get thee to a makeup counter pronto.

TRAVEL BALI’S NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
Wyndham Tamansari Jivva Resort
Hands up if you’re planning a girls’ trip, you’re a foodie, into yoga or you love a holiday of pure indulgence. If you said ‘hell yeah’ to any of the above, Tracy Sinclair has just the place for you. THE FIVE STAR Wyndham Tamansari Jivva Resort at Klungklung ticks all the boxes if you’re looking for tranquility and luxury. It’s away from the hustle of Kuta and Seminyak (but not too far away to enjoy that too) and is perfect if you really want to get away from it all. If cocktails by the pool and burying your head in a book are your idea of bliss, this peaceful resort is worth checking out. Contemporary luxury is the vibe here so for those who love the #luxelife, get your phones ready because the ‘wow’ starts at the magnificent lobby. It’s an incredible space, blending Indonesian flavour with modern architecture. There’s also a superb range of accommodation options but it’s hard to go past the ocean view pool suites with their balcony pool or a private pool villa, perfect for honeymooners. Located on the black sand of Lepang Beach, the resort features beautifully landscaped gardens, two stunning pools, a first-class spa, an ultra-cool beach club and two restaurants. You’ll probably want to explore nearby Ubud, however, you could quite easily stay put and enjoy all the resort has to offer, if that’s the type of getaway you’re after. I love being pampered when I’m on holiday and 66
YOU CAN HEAR WAVES CRASHING ON THE BEACH DURING YOUR TREATMENT AND IT’S A SUBLIME EXPERIENCE. Tirta Spa Garden Huts
could happily indulge in a massage or treatment every day. The resort’s Tirta Spa with its exotic garden huts is simply sensational. You can hear the waves crashing on the beach during your treatment and it’s a sublime experience. If food is your thing, you can book a group cooking class and learn to make traditional dishes from the resort’s professional chefs. It’s very relaxed and suitable for any skill level. Our group of five learned about fresh local produce and how to get the right balance of spices - the result; delicious Spicy fish parcels wrapped in banana leaf. The resort also has a fully equipped gym and an impressive yoga deck perfectly positioned in the middle of lush gardens. Again, it’s close to the beach so you can hear the waves. I’m no yogi,
but I’m pretty sure this is the perfect place to do a downward dog. Aside from the spa, my favourite place is the beachfront Jivva Beach Club. With brightly coloured umbrellas and bean bags, it’s a stylish spot to sip on a cocktail (they are very, very good), and watch the sun go down as the resident DJ heats up the beats. Whether you’re with the girls, with your love, with your family, or taking time out for yourself, Wyndham Tamansari Jivva Resort, and indeed Bali, has everything you need to satisfy your soul. SITUATED AT DESIGNER hotel, QT Gold Coast, the much-loved Japanese destination, Yamagen, has undergone recent transformations, now revealing an updated decor and menu under the stewardship of new Executive Chef, Adam Lane. Joining the team from Kiyomi Restaurant at The Star, Adam has a comprehensive and impressive resume in the art of Asian cuisine, having worked at the likes of Sake and Sushi E in Sydney, cooking alongside Nobu Matsuhisa at the starred Nobu, and with David Thompson at London’s Nahm. “I had come from cooking a lot of French style cuisine and really fell in love with Japanese cuisine after working at Tetsuya’s in Sydney,” he says. “I love the lightness and delicacy of Japanese food and really enjoy the challenge of mixing ingredients that you wouldn’t usually think of putting together. Finding the perfect balance of flavours is what
keeps our work exciting.” With a constantly-evolving menu, Yamagen reinvents a traditional Japanese izakaya with a modern twist. “I enjoy experimenting with dishes, so my menu is always evolving,” Adam says. “My favourites at the moment are the Sakura Smoked Ocean Trout with Negi, fennel, crispy leek, ikura and lime zest, and also the Ao Nori crispy skin quail with dehydrated king brown mushroom, sesame yakitori.” Regardless of what you order, Yamagen embodies true Japanese omote-nashi – the art of hospitality.
