History, memories, elegance
Since opening in 1924 and now in its 96th year, Brisbane Arcade is arguably Brisbane City’s ‘jewel in the crown’. Thanks to the generosity of James and Mary Emelia Mayne who established Brisbane Arcade as an ongoing gift back to the community, it has become one of Australia’s most iconic shopping destinations. With its old-world charm, rich history and elegant features, the Arcade is home to a plethora of specialty stores and craftspeople and holds a special place in many people’s hearts. Owned and operated by The Mayne Estate philanthropic trust, with proceeds going to the University of Queensland’s School of Medical Research, it’s reassuring to know that when you support local business at the Arcade, you’re also helping to fund global medical research and save lives. Yet another way to make your Christmas shopping that bit more considered and thoughtful in 2020.

Brisbane Arcade is a must-visit destination for jewellery and home to some of Australia’s most highly awarded and renowned virtuoso jewellery designers and stellar retail jewellery houses.
A world away from mass produced sameness with master jewellers who have spent decades honing their craft, busy Brisbane Arcade jewellery workrooms are crafting bespoke and unique statement pieces of jewellery using the highest quality gemstones, diamonds, pearls, semi and precious metals sourced from around the world.
As one of the longest established jewellers, John and Dell Stone opened Stones Diamond Ring Specialists in 1970 and moved into Brisbane Arcade in 1989 where the business is today led by their son, Paul. Each Stones creation is carefully crafted in their busy Brisbane Arcade workroom by their team of master jewellers.

Douglas Jewellers can be seen on the Gallery Level of the Arcade busily working away at their designs.
Ashley says that “local manufacturing offers something that massproduced imported goods cannot compete with.”
Ferdinand Woolley is yet another master jeweller undertaking his craft in a workshop in Brisbane Arcade.
“I love being able to talk directly to clients about what they want made and explain how I can help them to create dream pieces of jewellery or restore or repair existing jewellery,” Ferdinand said.
James Tyler is a craftsman of handmade and custom designed special occasion and ‘just because’ jewellery designs, with his signature flare for colour and careful selection of gemstones weaved into intricate designs.
James loves drawing inspiration from a number of sources and says “having created for so many people over the years, I have encountered many different personal styles and each leads to a unique creation.”
Gem selection is a vital step in creating wow factor jewellery.
Here in Australia, our rich soils foster some of the world’s most sought after stones, explains Kim Davison from Kimmison Jewellery.
“We love working with local gem miners and merchants to source beautiful stones like the Western Australian Argyle pink, white and champagne diamonds and sapphires from Central Queensland.”
Venturing abroad, master gemologist, Charles Lawson of Lawsons Gems spends extensive periods travelling Mozambique and Madagascar to unearth incredible gemstones.
