Beauty Buzz Makeup artist and beauty blogger Rachael Brook talks glowing skin, new-season trends and her stunning signature look.

How long have you been a makeup artist and what made you want to get involved in the industry?

I started doing makeup when I was 15.

I’ve wanted to do it for as long as I can remember, but I had no idea about what the job would actually be like. All I knew was that I wanted to play with makeup! I just happened to meet an amazing artist and I ended up assisting her for the first four years of my career.

Drugstore vs. high-end, which do you prefer?

I definitely use a mixture of luxury and affordable products, but I have favourites from different brands.

What are your top four tips for achieving a sun-kissed glow?

1. I’m currently obsessed with liquid bronzer. I like to use it on the hollows of the cheeks and the temples.

2. I usually follow that with a powder bronzer on the cheeks, and just a hint on the chin, forehead and nose.

3. I use either a liquid illuminator or powder highlight and apply it to the tops of the cheekbones, under the brow bone, on the tip of the nose and the cupid’s bow of the lips.

4. When I want to show off my pins, I mix a little bit of a golden liquid illuminator with my sunscreen or tan – JBronze is a favourite of mine.

What makeup trends can we expect to see for this season?

Makeup will focus heavily on one feature at a time. For example: bright lipsticks with minimal eye makeup or (heavier) eye makeup with almost nothing on the lips, flushed cheeks and not much else.

What’s your signature makeup look?

Glowing, dewy skin is definitely what I love to wear – and what I love to do on my clients. From that point onwards I like to mix things up day to day, client to client, but I always like to work with natural face shapes.

Mostly, I love to enhance features, not completely change them.

What do you love most about the makeup artistry industry?

I love that it’s creative. I love that it’s easy to try new things and then remove it all at the end of the day. I love playing with colours and textures and I love to see the changes it makes.
