LOVE!

THE CHANGING FACTOR SONEVA FUSHI

Welcome to the Passion issue. There’s a sign on a wall, as you take the Story Bridge off-ramp into the Valley, that says “The more I think about it, the bigger it gets.” That phrase gets me thinking every time, because if you’re passionate about something (like most of us are), your ideas tend to grow and grow, becoming more intense over time. Ask anyone who has started a business, pursued a career or had a burning desire for something – it’s all-consuming and almost impossible to not think about. This feeling of intense enthusiasm is how I define ‘passion’. And Brisbane is filled with talented people who give their dreams, businesses and families their all. It keeps them awake through the night, gives them purpose and fuels a fire inside their bellies when they start kicking goals. We’re extremely fortunate at Style that we meet so many people who are passionate about what they do. It’s awesome! You can hear it in their voice and see it in their eyes when you meet them. They’re inspiring, driven, exhilarating to be around... and there’s so much we can take away from their stories. People like LINDSAY BENNETT, Festival Director of MERCEDES-BENZ FASHION FESTIVAL, who along with his team have poured a whole lot of love and energy into bringing us what I’m sure will be the best festival yet. I’m particularly looking forward to the St John’s Cathedral parade. Can you imagine a more magnificent backdrop to showcase some of our best designers? Featured this month we talk to JOSH PITERMAN from BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING STORY; MAXINE HORNE of VITA GROUP; TESS WILLCOX of WORLD RESORTS OF DISTINCTION and we present so many incredible businesses and products that have been borne out of that overwhelming and beautiful emotion… passion. Enjoy and hope this issue fans your fire!

LIVING the dream

J OSH PITER MAN Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Turning dreams into realities is something many of us can only hope for. But for these three creatives, failure was never an option, and transforming childhood imaginations into booming careers was all they ever thought about. While facing endless setbacks on the journey to achieving their goals, it was an incredible drive and hunger to be successful that brought them over the line to see them where they are today. WORDS BY LAURA FRENDON

A

t the age of 16, Josh auditioned for his school musical, Fame, realising then and there he was born to perform. Since then, he’s performed in hit stage shows such as Hairspray and Cats, which scored him a Green Room award for Best Supporting Actor In A Musical. His newest adventure, playing the role of Gerry Goffin in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is one of his most challenging yet, telling the story of a character so close to his heart. A friend in the musical industry suggested he audition for the role after seeing the show on Broadway. After looking into it, Josh fell in love with Gerry, the music, and Carole King herself. He was already familiar with Carole’s music, but like so many people, didn’t realise how extensive her work was. “I had no idea how vast her songbook was – I especially had no idea that she wrote ‘The Locomotion’.” The show has just landed in Brisbane and is already blowing away audiences. And now that he’s completely settled into the role, Josh feels personally connected to his character after telling his life story on stage over and over again. “There’s always an extra level of respect I feel I have to give to Gerry because I value his life so much. He was a really complex and troubled man, but PAGE 10

a true genius too – that deserves some tender care when playing him.” While performing the same show for nights on end can become boring for some, Josh believes it’s the feeling he gets when singing and acting that inspires him to get on stage every night, exploring his character further and pushing his performance to the limit. He claims hard work and a great love for what he’s doing are the most important things that keep him going each day. “There’s always an element of fear and an element of fearlessness in everything I do as an artist. It’s striking that balance of being scared enough for it to really matter and being free enough to do my absolute best performance.” Previously performing in Brisbane with The Ten Tenors, Cats, and West Side Story, Josh loves the laid back nature compared to the hustle and bustle of Melbourne and Sydney, and obviously, the fabulous weather. He also takes the opportunity while he’s here to visit his favourite place on earth, Byron Bay. Beautiful is sure to inspire everyone who sees it, with Josh describing it as, “so uplifting, you can’t help but feel like taking on the world after watching it.” Recently taking away the Best Musical Award at this year’s Helpmann Awards, it’s a must see for lovers of darn good music. C H LO E & K ATE Jericho Road Clothing

S

isters Chloe and Kate are co-owners of up and coming Brisbane label Jericho Rd Clothing, known for its quirky and out of the box designs. The idea to launch a fashion label was brewing long before the launch of Jericho Road Clothing, as the sisters had always dreamed of starting a business together. After contemplating the idea for quite some time, they were encouraged and convinced by family and friends, as well as other up and coming businesses pushing their way into the fashion world. “We’ve started to draw a lot of our inspiration and motivation from other small business ladies doing amazing things.” Both Chloe and Kate have always had an affinity with fashion, arts and craft, and entrepreneurial projects, with

both of them running small businesses alongside their day jobs in the past. It was only when they focused on fashion as a business in itself that they really started to feel like they’d found the right path. Just like most, a lot of determination and many hours of hard work was the key to Chloe and Kate’s success, with both of them working around full-time jobs to get their business up and running. “We’re not going to lie, it’s certainly not an easy gig, and there have been many times where we’ve felt like throwing in the towel. But, it’s all been worth it.” What’s next for Jericho Road Clothing? They’re hoping to expand their stockists nationwide, as well as open up more pop-up stores throughout the east coast.

NATAL IE WEIR Expressions Dance Company

A

fter attending her first ballet at the age of five, Natalie realised early on that she had a true passion for dance. She studied ballet throughout her childhood years, before attending the Queensland University of Technology after completing high school. While ballet was always her passion, the move to QUT allowed her to fall in love with the contemporary style and choreography, quickly realizing it was a core talent of hers, and spent her early days freelancing with companies all over the world. But after having her second child, she began to want a company to work with regularly, to really connect with an ensemble of dancers. Fast forward to the present, Natalie has now been with Expressions Dance Company for nine years, STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

appointed as Artistic Director in 2009. She’s always dreamt of creating beautiful work with beautiful dancers creating performances that connect through emotion to an audience. With a career spanning over 30 years and having choreographed more than 170 professional works for some of the world’s leading dance companies, Natalie still finds a way to stay inspired. “I am attracted to human stories and find inspiration in poetry, paintings, family and observation of life.” Natalie is currently creating a new work with EDC, Everyday Requiem, which will be at QPAC in October. It holds up a mirror to this amazing journey called life and the human experience. It focuses not just on the milestones, but the joy and beauty to be found in the every day. PAGE 11

Road Trip to

HAPPINESS

Ah, self-belief. So hard to come by and even harder to hold on to. And it impacts us all on a daily basis. Marina Perry from Pure Health Clubs Coorparoo says “letting go is critical to our growth and wellbeing.” It’s time to say goodbye to your fear and hesitation.

YOUR UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Somehow, we seem to have ditched happiness in favour of the pursuit of perfection. But, the problem with unrealistically high expectations is that sometimes the expectations get so high, it can be terrifying to settle for anything less. Quit the people-pleasing habits and let go of your unrealistic expectations once and for all.

The journey to happiness doesn’t have to be windy and bumpy, according to Courtney Frank. Sometimes life can feel like it’s going full steam ahead. There’s twists, turns, road bumps and forks in the road – and sometimes it’s exciting, right? But, there’s a problem with always running at 100% and letting life pass you by. If you don’t stop and smell the roses, that life-high can suddenly drop to a dramatic low

YOUR LIMITED SELF-BELIEF

YOUR UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS and all of a sudden, the road trip to happiness has come to a grinding halt. If you’re willing to let go of a few things (and we’re not just talking about material possessions), you can take the road trip back to happiness once and for all. But, there are a few things you need to ditch first.

This step is all about finding the courage to let go of those who no longer serve you. Unhealthy relationships may come in the form of romantic relationships, family ties or friendships. Paul Baker from PBR Coaching says “check the relationship against the core values you have for yourself and if they don’t align, cut the tie. Our happiness comes from being in unison with our deep core values.”

MARINA’S TIP: “REASONS ARE JUST STORIES THAT REINFORCE YOUR FEARS. YOU CAN HAVE REASONS OR RESULTS. YOU CHOOSE.”

OWNER JEFF ZAPHIR & HEAD CHEF DANIEL CHRISTIE

We want MORE The fresh café making its way into your weekend brunch rotation.

T

he much loved Moreish Café in Stones Corner is back and better than ever with a fresh new look and modern fusion menu. When a devastating fire gutted their kitchen, owner Jeff Zaphir took it as an opportunity to give the café a complete revamp, banishing their industrial and monochrome interior and replacing it with a welcoming and open space. Filled with an abundance of lush greenery and a crisp white and grey backdrop, the muted and clean canvas gives a fresh and friendly vibe to the busy cafe. The almost ‘clean slate’ feel of the new space allows the vibrant and delicious menu, a mixture of fresh ideas and old classics, to stand out on the plate, making the experience both a tasty and visual delight. We were spoilt for choice when we checked out the amazing new menu, co-curated by Jeff and head chef Daniel Christie, who has 20 years of culinary experience behind him and an eye for impeccable detail. Everyone’s brunch time favourite, eggs benedict, kick started the breaky feast. A house made hollandaise is easy to tell, and this one definitely was. Light PAGE 16

in texture and not too salty, it was a definite standout, and no way in hell from a packet. Accompanied with crispy bacon and perfectly poached eggs, it’s a must try if you’re the type of person who always orders the same thing. Next was a kitchen special - red velvet pancakes with Persian floss. Moist, thin, and layered with cream, they were a pancake fiend’s dream. Garnished with edible flowers and strawberries on the side, it was almost too pretty to eat. If super sweet breakfast isn’t your thing, try pairing it with the beetroot latte. The last dish was one for the health freaks and those silly enough to believe calories count at breakfast. The buddha bowl offers all the green goodness you could ask for like broccoli, spinach, and kale, as well as house made beetroot falafel, which was absolutely delicious. If you’re keen to keep things green, order the green smoothie to have alongside it. READ MORE ONLINE MOREISH CAFE 2/398 LOGAN RD, GREENSLOPES P 3172 0655 @MOREISHCAFE

CURED SCALLOP

A little pot of culture The guys who brought you Rick Shores have hit the streets of Brisbane.

D

escribed as a neo-Chinese dining hall, Little Valley draws inspiration from a number of Chinese cuisines, taking an approach that pays respect to traditional origins. The multi-regional menu takes a modern approach, re-designing the traditional dishes we know and love to make them fresh and exciting. An example of this is the Potato and Truffle Spring Rolls, which take the traditional dish that we all know and love to another level. Instead of being filled with vegetables, they’re filled with creamy potato and dusted in rock salt. Other standouts on the menu include the Cured Scallop with Spiced Pumpkin Seed and Chilli Oil, the Half Twice-Cooked Duck with Fermented Plum, and the Dry Fried Beans with Mustard Greens, Salted Pork and Soy. The drinks menu was created with the same creative flair with over 100 different wines available, as well as an impressive list of signature cocktails. These too were created to include a contemporary Asian twist, like the

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

HOUSE COCKTAILS

Waking Panda (Absolut Vodka, Elderflower, Mandarin and Citrus) and the Beijing Sling (Beefeater Gin, House Cherry Vermouth, House Spice, Pineapple and Citrus). The space itself is epic, with the original structure almost 100 years old. It’s been taken back to its original bones with all walls being taken down, allowing the exposed bricks and steel to become features of the restaurant. Just like the menu, the space aims to blend the old with the new, creating a chic, airy, and bright space for guests to enjoy. They’ve also added gold bar light sculptures to mimic bamboo scaffolding, which completely lift the building and add a wow factor to the dining experience.

Citrus Delight Take your taste buds to France. Inspired by his Grandfather’s passion for cooking, Gert Pretorius aims to bring energy and creativity to his kitchen. The recipe he’s sharing with us is one of the first items he added to the Madame Rouge menu after becoming head chef – a rich and lemony French style tart, complimented by a flaky and buttery pastry.

CLASSIC FRENCH TARTE CITRON

Ingredients For the pastry: 125g unsalted butter, cool 85g icing sugar, sifted 250g plain flour, sifted 2 large eggs, beaten, keep separate

For the filling: 9 large eggs 1 egg yolk 390g caster sugar 300ml thickened cream Zest & juice of 5 large lemons 50g caster sugar

Method For the pastry: Cream together the sugar and butter. Using a whisk or fork mix in flour until mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add one beaten egg and mix until the crumbs just come

PAGE 18

What has fuelled your passion to want to be a chef? I spent a lot of time in my grandfather’s kitchen as a child. His passion for cooking and food has always inspired me. Who would you most like to cook for? Paul Bocuse, Rick Stein, Dominique Crenn, Massimo Bottura, Anthony Bourdain. What would you serve them? Coal grilled, fresh caught fish, roasted fennel, Australian asparagus and samphire, and a lot of chardonnay. These are all people who appreciate the simplicity of good produce. A good party is always better when spent with people who love food and drink as much as you do. Favourite ingredient and why? Citrus. The wide range of flavours can complement pretty much everything, sweet and savoury. I love the freshness it imparts to any dish.

together. Do not overwork. Form pastry into a disc, cover in baking paper, refrigerate for oen hour. Pre-heat oven to 170C. Roll out pastry between two large sheets of baking paper to 3-4mm thick. Grease a 27cm loose-bottomed tart tin. Line the tin with the pastry, being sure the pastry is even all around and pressed into the corners. Prick the base at equal intervals with a fork. This will allow the steam to escape the bottom of the tart, giving a crisp pastry base. Crumple up a piece of baking paper larger than the tart tin, uncrumple and place on top of the pastry, fill with baking beans. Bake for 15 minutes, until the sides are light golden in colour. Remove the baking paper and beans. Brush a thin coat of beaten egg on the pastry, return to the oven, bake an additional five minutes. Turn the oven down to 120C, open the door, leaving tart shell inside for a further 20 minutes.

Most memorable meal? Many of my childhood meals were enjoyed over an open fire. I don’t have a most memorable meal, but rather a most memorable meal style. Eating around a camp fire, the embers crackling and light aroma of smoke has had a huge influence on the flavour profiles I most associate with. What do you bring to the Madame Rouge kitchen? Energy and creativity. I have an amazing team behind me at Madame Rouge, and I hope they can feed the energy I bring to work to create the dishes that make me proud. Why did you choose this recipe to share with Style readers? This is one of the first items I added to the menu after becoming the head chef. It was immensely popular with our customers.

For the filling: Whisk together the eggs, egg yolk and sugar in a heat proof mixing bowl until well combined. Mix in the cream, zest and juice of the lemons. Over a double boiler, heat the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches 60C. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a pouring jug. Skim off any foam from the top of the liquid. Carefully pour into the baked tart base. Bake at 120C for 10-15 minutes, until the centre of the tart has just set. Allow to cool for two hours outside of the fridge, then cool for at least another six hours in the fridge.

To serve: Slice the tart into wedges. Sprinkle with a thin layer of sugar; use a blow torch to lightly caramelise the top, serve with vanilla or lemon ice-cream.

Coffee brewed for a cause No fancy latte art, just serious coffee without the bells and whistles.

This August, Wolff Coffee Roasters will be hosting the Queensland AeroPress Championship, encouraging competitors to create new ways to press, prepare and present their own brew. Running since 2008, the competition is all about perfectly brewed coffee, with no time wasted on over the top latte art or a time-consuming cold drip. If you live and breathe this aromatic world, and have never entered the competition before, now is your chance. Whether you’re a trained barista, a casual coffee pourer, or even an at-home, self-appointed coffee extraordinaire, now is the time to put your skills to the test. All competitors will receive a 200g bag of filter roasted beans to practice with before the

competition, as well as a 100g bag on the day. If brewing isn’t your thing but you worship the ground your barista walks on, why not attend as a spectator? All are welcome on the day. All proceeds raised from this years Queensland AeroPress event will be donated to Dancing CEOs for Women’s Legal Service Qld. Dancing CEOs is an event held every year, inviting Brisbane’s leading CEOs to City Hall to swap the boardroom for the dance floor in front of 1000 guests, all to support the prevention of domestic violence. In 2019, CEO of Wolff Coffee Roasters, Penny Wolff, will be joining Dancing CEOs, hoping to raise $20,000

The smell of lamb cooking on the spit over hot coals fills the air and the friendly staff at The Lamb Shop make you feel right at home. What do you love about King Street? The variety of choice King Street has to offer and that it caters for everyone. Your favourite dish: Whole slow roast lamb shoulder to share which is slow cooked for 8 hours.  Your most memorable meal: Char Grilled Octopus at Hellenika on the Gold Coast. Favourite ingredient: Lemon, Olive Oil and Oregano. What has fuelled your passion for food? A strong family background in speciality coffee and in the hospitality industry.  @THELAMBSHOP

Who would you most like to cook for? Everyone and anyone! For me, I love cooking to change opinions. For example, if I learn someone doesn’t like fish, I want to cook them a fish dish to transform the way they think and feel about food. All food is delicious in its own way!

Top tips for great looking hair? 1. Protect your hair: There’s so many beautiful (and delicious smelling) luxe heat protection products in the market and they can help protect not only from blow-drying and straighteners, but also from exposure to heaters, air-conditioning etc too. 2. Don’t live on dry shampoo: We know it’s tempting to stretch out that wash but your gorgeous locks deserve love and attention. A good shampoo every few days is a vital care ritual. 3. Treatment yo’ self: When you’re in the salon next, ask for a deep conditioning treatment and inject some healthy love into your hair. 4. Tell your stylist everything: That box dye you popped in a few months ago?  It’s so important for your stylist to know your hair history so they can treat your hair accordingly. An open and honest relationship is the key to a beautiful future (for your hair) #wink. What has been a game changer in the hair industry? Olaplex. This incredible product has magical powers to heal, repair, strengthen and just add extra love to your hair, and we adore sharing its amazing effects with our clientele. We’re so excited these gorgeous products have arrived in Australia, you are going to love them!

LESSONS LEARNED Everyone starts their journey to success in a different way, but for many, it’s a love and drive that carries them there. These two working professionals have jumped over hurdles to get where they are today, facing a number of challenges and setbacks. We spoke to them about their greatest lesson, and how they turned it into their greatest achievement.

The

ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S WEALTHIEST CEOS, MAXINE HORNE, TELLS US ABOUT HER GREATEST MOTIVATIONS AND WHAT DRIVES HER CONTINUAL SUCCESS I love helping to solve problems, and find motivation in creating, building, problem solving for customers, fixing things and proving to others that it can be done. I find it challenging when told “you can’t do that!” It reminds me of when we first started Vita, or Fone Zone as we were known back then. Everyone told us it wouldn’t work and no one would ever go to a shopping centre to buy a mobile phone. I immediately wanted to prove them wrong. Which I did. I always say, “There’s always a way, you just need to find it.” I think that, as well as being surrounded by a strong team, inspires and drives me to keep pushing to set the bar even higher. I’m extremely motivated by talented people and really love to help PAGE 24

others to be the best they can be – that’s where I get my buzz. Vita has recently launched SQDAthletica, bridging the gap in the activewear market when it comes to men’s only activewear brands. SQDAtheltica is about encouraging men to take accountability for their own wellbeing, and to get out and do some form of exercise to fuel their body and mind. I’m really looking forward to building our presence as a leader in this sector, as well as continuing to grow our established suite of brands by continuing to push through boundaries.

KARL BROWN INSTYLE SOLAR

MY GREATEST LESSON IS… Thinking

Outside The Box

INSTYLE SOLAR’S KARL BROWN TELLS US HOW HE SET HIS BUSINESS APART FROM THE REST BY FLIPPING THE FOCUS ONTO THE CUSTOMER I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, knowing that I could do something different or be better in every position I’ve found myself in. I’m always pushing for change, and find I get bored very easily. I need to constantly be moving forward and working towards something. A few years ago I was setback in my own career and decided I would not go back to the corporate sales life. I decided the only way forward was to set my own path, so decided to look for solar opportunities to pursue. I’d been interested in solar for many years simply due to seeing a number of installations around Brisbane, and wanted to build a company around a product that was great for the environment, but also sold itself. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

We decided to believe in the product itself and trusted that being different was more important than being better. In order to do this, we had to out think the competition, analysing them to make sure we were different, rather than a direct copy. “We operate differently” was spread across the first ever website that went live for Instyle Solar, with a financial focused sales approach being the key difference that set us apart. People buy them because the end goal is a lower electricity bill, not because of how they look.

CREATIVE MARKETING with Kim Newland

The feeling of bespoke tailoring

Become the ideal version of yourself

Is Your Brand Seen And Remembered?

Bespoke is more than a process – it’s a feeling. It’s the feeling you get when the fabric is unique, and the feeling when it fits like a glove. Bespoke is confidence you put on. It’s the compliments from strangers when you’re standing at a bar, and the comments from men who appreciate style. You get exactly what you need every time you put the garment on and it makes you feel like a million dollars. This is not just your suit, jacket or trouser. The feeling of bespoke should arise from every part of your wardrobe. Imagine sunglasses, shoes, ties, t-shirts, and jeans, all giving you the confidence to walk tall wherever you go. Imagine a wardrobe that is made for you, and a wardrobe that gives you an indescribable, bespoke feeling every single time. Stop imagining.

“As within… so without” said Socrates. Or in today’s terms, we might say that the life you are experiencing is a reflection of your beliefs, values and identity. This is your self-image and it is seen in the life you are living. While you can’t outperform it, you can work to improve it by changing what you believe about yourself. Here are 5 tips to improve your self-image: • Create a mental picture of the ideal version of yourself. Step into the picture. • Be aware of every statement you make to yourself. Eliminate the negatives. • Ask yourself questions that encourage your unconscious mind to seek positive answers. • Stop asking WHY questions. Your unconscious mind will find many answers to support a negative belief. • Observe your emotions and body language. Act in a way that is supporting the ideal version of you.

If you want your brand to be seen through the markets promotional clutter, keeping up with current trends is an absolute marketing must! Only using traditional streams of marketing may limit your reach, especially with the all-important future of your business – the up-and-coming generation! Take a holistic approach to marketing and interact with your audience. To ensure you make an impact, convey your brand messages while providing an opportunity for the viewer to feel something of personal value. Keep ideas relatable and don’t overcomplicate things. It’s important to have an element of originality but remember there is no point reinventing the wheel, just ensure you add a little of your brand’s personality. Provide a way for people to interact with your brand or add a solution-driven topic to help potential customers see your relevance to them. Create an opportunity for the viewer to reflect on the content being presented to make a memorable impression.

MODERN DENTISTRY with Dr Hieu Le

We all need help sometimes

Has coffee done a complete 360?

Straight teeth without compromise

Most of us find we’re great at nailing some aspects of our day-to-day life, but often fall behind in others. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re an organisation ninja at work, but your personal life feels more like running an obstacle course blindfolded. Life has never been busier and these feelings are totally normal. The chaotic world we live in today often requires Wonder Woman type skills, but no matter how hard we try, we can’t all be superheroes. It all comes down to prioritisation, delegation and not being afraid to ask for help when you need it. Just because you aren’t on top of everything, it doesn’t mean you aren’t winning at life. Just make sure you have dedicated time each week to focus on your priorities and take care of whatever is stressing you out the most. Apply the “Do now, Delegate or Ditch” philosophy to every item on your to-do list, and see how quickly you can master your obstacle course.

While you might like to enjoy a perfectly roasted, precisely extracted, latte from your local café each day, research confirms it’s actually instant coffee that most of us still drink at home. If you could enjoy delicious coffee, efficiently prepared anywhere, anytime, could you be converted to try instant? There’s now an opportunity to bring accessibility and flexibility to specialty coffee, with instant products the hottest in the market right now. Marcus Allison from Instant Specialty has delved into this new world, taking specialty roasted coffee, carefully extracting and then freeze-drying it to create a high-quality instant coffee. The convenience of instant coffee could make it an attractive product in an already established market, where we have now come full circle. As instant coffee seeks to sustain consumer interest, specialty instant coffee could very well be the answer.

In the past, the only option for straightening teeth was unsightly metal braces. But now, exciting new technology is readily available, and patients have the option of clear removable aligners that offer efficient and predictable results. Generally, a course of clear aligner treatment can be completed within 12-18 months, giving patients the freedom of straightening their teeth without disrupting their busy lifestyles. Removing the need for metal wires and brackets, teeth are straightened with the use of custom plastic trays. These trays are then changed every two weeks, gradually and effectively straightening the teeth. Clear aligners can not only improve the appearance of your teeth, but can also improve the health of teeth and gums by allowing easier access to remove plaque, which can be challenging with crowded teeth.

Overcoming self-sabotage

Why you must dress authentically

Spider veins are small, red thread veins under the skin’s surface, predominantly found on the outside of the thigh but can occur anywhere on the leg. If you’ve recently developed some, and are considering treatment, here are some ways to ensure you see optimum results. Have an ultrasound examination in order to identify if any underlying reticular veins are causing the spider veins. Failure to treat these correctly can lead to “matting,” where new, very fine veins form. Ensure your doctor is notified of any medications or supplements you take, as even fish oil can interfere with treatment. Compression stockings should also be worn for at least five days and nights. No one likes to wear them, however they do mean better results. Over time, new veins might develop and you may need a maintenance session after a few years to keep those legs looking perfect.

We all have goals. However, sometimes our behaviour is self-sabotaging and we create hurdles for ourselves in achieving those goals. Self-sabotaging includes procrastination, addictive behaviours, and even forms of self-harm, and while these behaviours initially seem purposeful, they invariably undermine us when repeated. The reality is, at times we unconsciously engage in unhelpful behaviours without full awareness. We are not sure why, but it may be to reflect previous hurts or disappointments. To interrupt self-sabotaging actions, we need to be attentive to warning signs that start the downward spiral and increase awareness of unconstructive thoughts, emotions, and actions. With deliberate practice, based on feedback, we’ll get stronger at responding in ways based on a commitment to our values and goals.

The world is constantly telling us who it thinks we should be. Latest trends and styles are all about getting you to fit the mold, but are they really who you are? Real style comes when you know who you are deep down and feel confident expressing that in the clothes you wear. What you wear tells people a story, and if that story isn’t a true reflection of who you are, then not only will you send the wrong message, but people will feel and see you as inauthentic. It will be subtle, but enough for you to miss that opportunity or prevent you from connecting with new people. I see so many ladies hide themselves from the world though their clothes. You don’t have anything to hide, because you are amazing. Learn how to express yourself in a way that tells people about you without any words. A picture says a thousand words. What is your picture saying to the world?

Preventing pigmentation

Reignite the spark in your relationship

Are your teeth feeling the cold?

Melasma is known as hormonal pigmentation or cholasma. It is a chronic condition that results in patchy pigmentation that is often symmetrical, commonly presenting on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. Melasma is a complex type of pigmentation which has to be treated in a special way to inactivate the pigment producing cells before any peels or laser are performed. Melasma treatment is a medical solution, not a cosmetic one, and should be treated by specialists. The best method of treatment is with a combination of topical prescription creams, oral tablets, and with gentle chemical peels and laser. The most important treatment is sunscreen and sun protection, as without these, pigmentation will often continue to worsen and not improve.  It is recommended to book an appointment with a specialist to determine the best course of treatment which will be tailored to your individual needs.

Sex is often the first thing that comes to mind when we think of passion, as good sex is often described as passionate. If you are struggling to find passion in your relationship, there are a number of things you can try to reignite your flame. To create real intimacy, you must first cultivate a strong emotional connection with one another. Start talking about your feelings and needs in a positive and open way and make requests that you know your partner can deliver on. Touch also helps create intimacy, so linger on the goodbye kiss, a soft touch on the back and try to sustain eye contact with each other. Finally, for passion to grow, you must be willing to keep changing things up – hold hands for longer, be the initiator, create anticipation, and most importantly, be kind. Be attentive and curious about your partner’s wants and desires and what passion means to them.

Tooth sensitivity has various different causes, and can be a sign of something more serious. Enamel can thin due to teeth grinding, a high acid diet, or gastric reflux, and may result in the nerve endings in the tooth becoming exposed and then reacting to cold, acidic, or sweet foods and beverages. Tooth sensitivity may also be due to decay or a leaking filling. Teeth grinding or clenching can sometimes cause sensitivity, and can sometimes be a warning sign that sleep apnoea may be an issue. Although there may not be a lot of obvious tooth wear, the extra forces applied to the teeth during sleep could cause the tooth nerves to become hypersensitive. There are many good sensitive toothpastes on the market that can help basic sensitivity issues when used correctly, however if the pain does not subside, a professional assessment is essential.

Skin prep is number one when it comes to creating the perfect base. Start with an oil or serum, then a hydrating primer before your base for a flawless complexion. Pat the top of the cheek bones, bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow and under the brow bone with a little luminizer. Bronze up under your cheekbones for definition and finish your face with a light coat of mascara and a nude lippy. For nails, we can’t go past a few coats of a soft, taupe shade. DATE NIGHT

With Your Bestie We asked founder of Brooklyn Beauty Bar, Brooke Jesberg, about “Beauty Dates” and why you need to book one now. What are these beauty dates we keep hearing about? A while ago we noticed that friends would come in together on a Wednesday or Thursday night to each get a treatment, enjoy a cocktail and catch up on all of the latest gossip. They became so common that we decided to give them a name and came up with “Beauty Dates.” Why do you think they’ve become so popular? They’re such a great idea! We’re all so busy these days and struggle to find

BROOKE JESBERG

time to not only get our beauty maintenance done, but also catch up with our friends. It’s so easy to schedule in a catch up and a spot of maintenance every four weeks at Brooklyn Beauty Bar – multi-tasking at its finest! What type of beauty date do most clients book in for? All sorts really! Everything from brow sculpting and facials, to a blow-dry and a manicure at the same time. It all depends on what they need to be pampered or how much

time they have. As our clients are really busy, they generally don’t want to stay longer than an hour. That’s why they love having multiple services at once. We even had two friends come in together to get a bikini wax at the same time. Now that’s what I call a bonding experience. Doctor visits after hours House call doctors providing after hours medical services.

W

e are all prone to health issues from time to time, whether it’s seasonal flu related conditions, infant illnesses, or age-associated health problems. Many of us also have parents who are in their later years and may not be able to easily tend to themselves when ill or drive at night to seek medical treatment. So what can you do if your condition is not life threatening, but you can’t wait until your GP clinic opens? A visit from a house call doctor service is the perfect solution, as it’s a Government approved, after hours, 100% bulk billed service for everyone with Medicare or Department of Veteran Affairs cards. In the past, a hospital visit was the only PAGE 44

practical answer if you or your loved one became sick in the middle of the night, over the weekend, or on a public holiday. Because of this, emergency departments became crammed with people whose conditions were not life threatening, adding pressure to the hospital and medical staff, often resulting in long waits for those seeking medical assistance. An after-hours house call doctor service can provide support, deliver comfort, and distribute medication and scripts at times when we feel particularly vulnerable and in need of care. Queensland owned and operated House Call Doctor’s Chief Operating Officer, Craig Glover, stated that they are focused on delivering the best after hours house call doctor service to patients in their homes.

Being Queensland’s largest provider, they have made more than 600,000 house visits since they started in 2015. These services are not designed or offered as an alternative to patients’ regular GP services, but rather an assurance to give continuity of care to people who fall ill outside of their GP’s regular hours of business. The house call doctor service works closely with the patient’s regular GP, sending a detailed email report the next working day to the GP explaining what course of action was taken as well as any mediation given or prescribed. There’s no doubt this after hours house call doctor service can provide peace of mind for most people who require practical and alternative care, relieving the pressure of any situation. The journey to inner confidence

When you’re caught up in the whirlwind of life, it can be easy to forget to make yourself a priority. We spoke to Brisbane mum Anna Hodge, who regained her confidence with Artisan Cosmetic & Rejuvenation Clinic. Why did you choose Artisan? I’d heard good things about Dr Linda Williams and had seen her results on my friends. I really liked the natural look she used and wanted to try it for myself. Why did you decide to have treatment? I felt I was starting to look a little tired and wanted treatment that would give me a fresher look. I didn’t want to go under the knife, so looked for noninvasive treatments. What treatments did you have? After a consultation with Dr Linda Williams, I decided to try injectables. I’ve had botox, fillers, and sublime contouring, which helps to produce collagen and tighten the

skin. My favourite was the injectables. How did you find the staff at Artisan? They are amazing from the second you walk in the doors. How did you feel after treatment? I felt great after all treatments. I definitely thought there’d be more pain and bruising. How has your confidence changed? How I look and feel after treatment does wonders for my confidence, as looking my best is important to me. I know you can’t stop the clock, but after seeing Dr Linda Willams and following her advice I am now much happier. Personalising the journey At St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot you will see small clusters of girls deep in conversation with teachers. The Year 9 to 12 students attend Academic Advising sessions, replacing their traditional form classes and facilitating a very purposeful and personal approach to academic care. Principal Ros Curtis says the key to these sessions is the ability to have different conversations than the usual student/teacher classroom interactions, and crucially, using data to provide feedback about students’ progress to drive their learning. “The power of this feedback lies in how effectively it is given and used,” said Ms Curtis. “Students are afforded sufficient time to monitor and reflect on feedback that is

delivered in a constructive and meaningful way, and are assisted to effectively implement the feedback, including setting goals, so it can lead to enhanced learning and improved results.” The process helps students to self-manage their learning, an important academic goal that doubles as a life lesson. Academic advising also has a vital pastoral element. Unhappy students cannot learn, so their advisors can delve into other factors that may be impacting their learning.

“Academic Advising is one of the many ways St Margaret’s personalises its approach to each student’s learning, and helps ensure they are seen and known. “It also helps each student to see and understand herself more clearly,” said Ms Curtis. TESS WILLCOX

Talking Travel with Tess Willcox What do you do and where are you from? I am the CEO of World Resorts of Distinction, which is a Resort Creative Agency focusing on sustainable luxury. I grew up in Margaret River, and moved to the Gold Coast 15 years ago. How did you get into the industry? After graduating with a Bachelor of Communications, I actually applied for the junior position in the company I now own. Always having a desire to travel the world and to somehow work in the industry, I fell into my dream job and worked for 15 years to get to where I am now, which is CEO and owner of the business. Your philosophy on life? Leave regular behind to explore the outskirts of extraordinary. Why is the eco-travel category so important to you? I’ve always lived my life as a bit of an eco-warrior, but as I get older the pertinence of healing our planet becomes paramount. The more I learn, the deeper the call to nurture the planet and encourage everyone to do the same through whatever platform is available to me. Travel is a nonnegotiable in my life, and so finding a way to do something that was such a core part of my being, in a way that was regenerative to the planet was essential.   What criteria determines what an ‘ecofriendly’ destination is? Every destination has the capacity to be eco-friendly, it all 5 tips for a great trip? • Don’t over-research. Too many people travel knowing everything about the destination and leave nothing to chance. My advice is to book a ticket and let the rest be guided when you are there. • Interact with the locals. There are extraordinary people with wonderful stories all over the world. Get to know them and uncover the beauty of their lives, it will make your experience far richer. • Travel as sustainably as possible. Offset your carbon footprint, and always carry the STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

comes down to a few different factors. How operators facilitate the logistics of their accommodations on the ground, how the traveller is encouraged to interact with the destination, and how the local community has been set up. Regarding resorts, we prefer the term sustainable to ‘eco-friendly’, as it cements a long-term commitment to sustainability and the resorts’ endeavours to be as carbon neutral / negative as possible. For us, deeming a resort sustainable really comes down to their long-term commitment to the regeneration of the natural surrounds, their education of both locals and travellers on how to treat the environment, and also the programs that have been implemented in order to reduce waste, minimise carbon footprint in every way, and refuse any products that are harmful to the environment including disposable plastic. What has been a game changer in the travel industry? Our client, Soneva, founded by Sonu Shivdasani and Eva Malmström Shivdasani in 1996 has been a game changer for the entire industry. Sonu and his team have singlehandedly pioneered the sustainable luxury path and continue to be innovators and game changers in terms of concept, design and sustainability. In 2016, Soneva pioneered the global hospitality industry by publishing the first ever Total Impact Assessment (TIA) tool, which was developed in-house. The TIA measures the impact of a company’s eco-essentials to avoid disposable plastic when you travel. • Dine where the locals dine, and drink where the locals drink • Pack your bag, then halve it. Next biggest travel trend? Conscious Travel. Not just in terms of environmental sustainability, but social responsibility as well. Ensuring that travellers engage and interact with locals and communities rather than being purely resort bound.   What are the hot destinations right now? Maldives, Morocco and Sri Lanka.

operations in five categories – Natural Capital, Human Capital, Social Capital, Economic Capital and Tax – and allows the company to quantify and monetise these impacts in a language that translates to standard business performance metrics. The result in 2015-16 showed that Soneva contributed a net positive impact of USD 34.2 million. We feel forever proud and inspired to work for such an impactful and wonderful brand. Favourite international destination? So far, Morocco. I have many destinations to visit, and most of the countries we work for are like home to me (especially Fiji and Samoa) but there is something about Morocco that continually pulls me back there. The romanticism of it just never escapes me. Favourite local destination? Margaret River (of course). Which unknown destination do you wish people knew about? There are 2 actually. Firstly, Samoa is one of the most untouched, beautiful island destinations in the world. It should be high on everyone’s bucket lists. Secondly, the Anambas Islands which are home to Bawah Reserve. Actually considered Indonesia, but 160 nautical miles North East of Singapore. I recently spent 4 days here and it blew my mind in every way possible. If you could live anywhere else where would you choose? Mallorca, Spain. PAGE 57
