EDITORIAL WHEN WE SET out to create our wedding features this month, we realised the traditional wedding ceremony was a thing of the past. While most principles remain the same, naked cakes and teepees are on the rise and brides are thinking outside the veil when it comes to their big day. We couldn’t be more in love with this change! White Lily Couture has graced our cover and fashion pages alongside Customs House and we’ve been whisked away to a wedding wonderland one white dress at a time. In my mind, you can never have too much of a good thing and this month our pages are filled with just that. From the perfect sweater and tips from Brisbane locals hitting the big time overseas to the best cosmetic procedures and a guide to planning a spring revival in your own home, we think we’ve hit all the right notes! With all the opportunities and challenges it brings, our increasingly interconnected world surprises me every day. Hashtags, partnerships and creative collaborations remind us that we really are lucky to be living in a time of exciting progress. It completely impacts the way we create, communicate and consume the world around us. Everyone is always asking what’s new these days. The answer? Almost everything.

UNDERSTATED LUXURY

WE LOVE

With the unlikely combination of different textures and patterns trickling down from the runways to the streets, understated luxury is the go-to this month. It’s all about the detail and you can’t go wrong with plush velvets and silks. Meanwhile, I’ve fallen in love with the Fallon chokers – the hint of leather is just to die for.

ASOS Montana pointed flat mules $39

The slip-on mule is having a moment and I couldn’t be more impressed. Slip-ons can make any outfit look effortlessly cool and I’m loving this metallic pair. Team them with your everyday denims or with a leather mini for instant edge.

This year, WhoWhatWear awarded Street Style of the Year to blogger Brooke Testoni and I couldn’t agree more. Known for her individual style, Testoni pushes the fashion boundaries. Although she’s usually found in vintage Levi’s, turtlenecks and slip dresses, she never wears them as they were originally intended. I have major style envy but this pinstripe power suit is something else. Flawless styling!

IT ALL STARTED with drinking games at a pub in Whistler, Canada. Molly hit it off immediately with Londoner Joel but they soon had to part ways, with Molly returning home to finish her studies at QUT and Joel moving back to London to “play grown ups and get a job”. In order to keep in touch, they resorted to Sunday Skype conversations. “Because of the time difference, I always ended up being in my pyjamas,” Molly says. When Molly relocated to London for a job with an ad network, she moved in with Joel and his mates. Instead of her usual nighties, she started wearing Joel’s shirts. “I loved the way they fit and would spend the entire Sunday hanging about

in them.” After one too many spilt coffees, it was agreed Molly had to get her own pyjamas, but she couldn’t find what she wanted. “There was nothing that offered cool prints, lovely cotton and a more accessible price tag, so we decided to make our own.” And so Desmond & Dempsey was born. The boyfriend shirt is the dominant silhouette, reimagined for the bedroom and tailored for the female figure. Business is booming, with designs from Desmond & Dempsey even being featured in Vogue. Molly still has a strong connection to Brisbane and she and Joel are planning to get married here. “I am very lucky that I have two homes now,” she says. AUGUST16

Britt Laspina

BRITT LASPINA BRITT LASPINA DESIGNS BRITT LASPINA FIRST realised she had a knack for designing when she caught herself doodling symmetrical patterns in class. After finishing her degree in Business at QUT, Britt was approached to have her artwork printed on fabric and she started up her own design business at the tender age of 19. It was her father who encouraged her to pursue her dreams and turn her hobby into a career. “He told me if I do what I love, the money would follow,” Britt says. Inspired by traditional Japanese and Korean patterns, all of Britt’s designs are hand-drawn and -painted. While this personal touch is a natural and essential part of Britt’s work, it has been largely phased out in other design

houses due to digital advancements. With her philosophy of staying true to her aesthetic and practicing professionalism at all times, Britt has gained clients all over the world. While she spends most of her time in New York these days, Britt says she is proud of her hometown. “I tell everyone in New York where I’m from,” Britt says. “Even pyjama king Peter Alexander asked me if I was from Sydney or Melbourne after hearing my accent. I was happy to answer quickly that I was actually from Brisbane – shock horror!” What does Britt miss the most about living in Brisbane? The breakfasts. “It’s pretty hard to match up to our amazing breakfast culture,” she says.

Jasmine Garnsworthy

GROWING UP IN Papua New Guinea and moving to Brisbane when she was 11, Jasmine worked in PR while undertaking a Bachelor of Mass Communication at QUT. After relocating to Sydney, she landed her first editorial gig with Mamamia when she was just 22 years old. Jasmine then worked as the fashion editor at Popsugar in Sydney after a friend saw a tweet about the role and suggested she apply. A press trip with H&M to New York was Jasmine’s first taste of the city. “I didn’t exactly love New York at first sight but I was totally fascinated and knew I needed to live here,” she says. So she applied for a role, got the job and was on a plane a few weeks later. From mapping out the day’s news content to having smoothies delivered directly to her desk (“I love that you

can get anything on demand in this city!”), Jasmine’s job has many perks, including attending New York Fashion Week, jetting off on press trips to Playa del Carmen with Escada, and heading to Miami with Lacoste. Jasmine says she loves the immediacy of working in a digital environment. “It’s fascinating to watch audience behaviour change in real time and react immediately with editorial decisions,” she says. Now studying an MBA externally through Griffith University, Jasmine’s advice to anyone looking to live and work overseas is to plan it out. “Relocating is expensive and it can be difficult to find a job. Research working visa options and call in favours from any connection you have in the country you wish to move to before you go. Be shameless and persistent!” 15

WINTER HOTSPOTS

We are spoilt for choice in Brisbane’s foodie and entertainment scene!

Are you the leader of your social pack? Tell them where to go with our venue cheat sheet. By Sarah McAlpine. AS BRISBANE’S FOODIE and entertainment scene goes from strength to strength, the abundance of venues means we’re now spoilt for choice – so much so that it can be a little bit overwhelming trying to find that perfect spot to suit your mood, occasion and companions. If you’re faced with the arduous task of entertaining out-of-towners, you want to show them the best of what the city has to offer. For unbeatable views, take them to Eleven Rooftop Bar on a Sunday afternoon to catch the sunset over the city. Don’t forget to grab a couple of their signature cocktails while you’re there! Consider Alfred & Constance for a quirky Queensland experience, and don’t forget the iconic Story Bridge Hotel for a true taste of Brisbane.

stylemagazines.com.au

First date jitters? The right venue can help put you at ease. You need somewhere atmospheric, but not too noisy; somewhere with conversation starters, that doesn’t detract from getting to know each other – and you want somewhere with good food, great drinks and friendly service. Where does one find this unicorn venue? We suggest Popolo at South Bank, Libertine at the Barracks and the

newly-opened British Colonial Co. in Hawthorne. You’ve been waiting for this all week: it’s finally Friday night and you’re ready to hit the town for one or two (read: eight) knock-off drinks with the girls. Head over to Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall on Caxton Street to work off some steam with live music, a whiskey bar and the option to throw your bra onto the antlers of a taxidermy moose…

READY FOR A CHANGE? While renting may be convenient, sometimes it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. CREATIVE COMPROMISE This house would be perfect if the kitchen were bigger, if there were a front deck and if the walls weren’t orange. Every house has its little quirks but, when renting, you don’t have the liberty to make changes. If the owner doesn’t like your proposed alterations, you just have to put up with those tangerine walls. Owning your own home will make those DIY jobs easier and you get to live in your dream home, not someone else’s. GET CASH SAVVY As a general rule, renters are more likely to spend their spare cash. Once rent is set aside, those leftover dollars always disappear quicker than we realise. When you have a mortgage to consider, you know that your hard-earned money is going towards paying off a long-term investment and not that extra pair of shoes. stylemagazines.com.au

ROOMIE BLUES Renting with friends is all fun and games in the beginning but when you just want to spend a night relaxing in front of the TV, ignoring your roommates’ friends and their loud music can get a little frustrating. Breaking free from the shared bathroom situation doesn’t have to be a farfetched dream. When you own your own home, you get to dictate the space and the rules. SENSE OF SECURITY With renting, there’s always the dreaded lease expiry hanging over your head. Owning your own home means you don’t have to worry about a landlord kicking you out or having to pack up your entire life to move once or twice a year. IMAGINE YOUR LEG is broken. Now imagine you can’t explain what hurts. You slowly get used to the pain until it seems natural. Until you can’t remember what life was like before this. A survey from the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates 45 per cent of Australians will experience a mental health condition during their life, with anxiety and depression being the most common. People who are depressed can feel “low” for extended periods; they might experience a feeling of numbness and disassociation, as though looking at the world from the outside. Anxiety can be the feeling of stress or unease even after the stressor has been removed or long after the difficult situation is over. There are ways to help those struggling with mental health conditions. First, you need to reject the stigma surrounding the issue: mental illness does not discriminate; everyone can be affected, regardless of circumstance or background. The next step is to talk to a doctor about available support. Cognitive behaviour therapy is a popular treatment that helps pinpoint unhelpful thought patterns and formulate ways to approach

IMPRESSIVE MR PRESTON

“The beautiful, universal thing about food is that it crosses all sorts of geographical, cultural and religious boundaries.”

Matt Preston speaks to Caitlyn Spanner about Australian-made fashion, the importance of family time and the bizarre connection between MasterChef Australia and India. WHEN I CHATTED with Matt Preston in June, he had just returned from a trip to India and was literally about to board a plane for Perth to begin a tour around Australia. As a travel writer for the last 20 years, this whirlwind lifestyle is nothing new for Matt. And while he’s well-known for his flamboyant fashion taste and larger-than-life presence on MasterChef Australia, it’s no secret that his heart is at home with the family. “The family meal is always around the table with everyone there, with no devices – that’s really important,” he says. Despite having taste-tested some of the world’s most famous dishes, Matt says, for him, food isn’t about showing off. “It isn’t about impressing people unless it’s a status thing you’re after,” he says. “I cook clean, simple, fresh food at home and you certainly won’t find a croquembouche at our family dinners.” When asked where his passion for food came from, Matt puts it quite simply: “I was a hungry child!” he laughs. “I’m excited by dinner time; I need it for survival; I love it for its constant surprise and beauty.” Matt’s appetite for creating and enjoying tantalising food translates through our TV screens; MasterChef Australia has reached its eighth season with no clear end in sight. And we aren’t the

only ones obsessed with the show: MasterChef Australia is actually the highest rated Englishspeaking show in India. Matt says he has never witnessed this type of mania before. “The beautiful, universal thing about food is that it crosses all sorts of geographical, cultural and religious boundaries,” he says. It’s true: almost everywhere you travel these days, you’ll find a MasterChef fan. “It’s a bizarre idea!” he says. “We make the show in a little shed in the corner of the most remote continent in the world.” Of his other great love, Matt says his fashion must be local or nothing. Working together with Charmaine De Pasquale (the celebrity fashion stylist Matt describes as his wardrobe mistress), he

chooses locally-sourced fabrics to produce all of his suits and shirts here in Australia. “I’m very proud of the fact that I’m actually wearing genuine Australian fashion,” he says. Matt has championed this style since he was 18 years old; while he may have been cast on MasterChef for his recognisable cravats, he views fashion as a way to express your personality rather than a way to make a statement. “Fashion can be contrived but I don’t think style can,” he says. “Style should be channelling who you are and expressing it in different manners.” This charismatic, intelligent food and fashion figure is definitely more than meets the eye and, here at Style, we can’t wait to see where his passions will take him next.

UNPARALLELED WEST END With expansive Brisbane River views from every residence, West End’s Virtuoso is set to raise the bar on inner-city living. GRACING THE HISTORIC West End site, once home to the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Virtuoso is an extraordinary offering from Stockwell. Designed to capture expansive views, all Virtuoso residences feature broad river frontages. Stockwell’s focus was to deliver large, luxurious residences, so opted for a smaller boutique building on the last remaining elevated position on the West End peninsula. Virtuoso’s three, four, and five bedroom pet friendly layouts superbly blend the grandeur of a luxury home and the ease of apartment living.

Rosslyn Atkinson at Virtuoso display

Separate entry foyers result in two residences per floor lobby, furthering privacy and security. Rosslyn Atkinson, employee of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, has a long history with the site and was one of the first buyers at Virtuoso after falling in love with the fabulous location. “My office was right there on the river overlooking the view and I loved having the afternoon sun come in,” Rosslyn explains. “My family and I are very excited about downsizing into an apartment and living very close to the city,” she adds.

With their first grandchild due in October, Rosslyn and her husband are thrilled to be pairing their move soon after as they look forward to having their grandson over to run around on the grandparent’s lawn. Visit the display from 10am to 4pm daily to experience the exceptional design, lifestyle and location. Virtuoso is an address that will hit all the right notes. WS Workshop has opened the doors to stunning life essentials in Fortitude Valley. AFTER 20 YEARS in the industry, award-winning interior design firm Wrightson Stewart has opened a concept store. Acclaimed designers Ian Wrightson and Steven Stewart started out designing kitchens, but have since expanded their horizons. In 2013, they created Brisbane brand WS Workshop with a distinct aesthetic; now, three years later, it has become a physical store. WS Workshop goes above and beyond the usual clothing and homewares, with an offering of life essentials for its customers. The unique concept of WS Workshop strives to celebrate Brisbane creation, with a strong emphasis on local manufacturing. “As a city, Brisbane has such a wonderful community of manufacturers and craftspeople that operate here, and it has been stylemagazines.com.au

the backbone of our concept,” Ian says. “The WS Workshop range presents designs refined to their simplest and most practical forms, with a strong emphasis on functionality and comfort.” While the range has been expanded, WS Workshop still offers custom-made kitchens that are both functional and beautifully crafted. With bespoke design service, these kitchens suit not just the needs of their clients but also the size of their space. “In every home, the kitchen becomes the backdrop to life; a place of ritual, comfort and conversation,” Ian says. The new store will encompass this philosophy while extending beyond the kitchen and reaching other rooms of the house. WS WORKSHOP 9 HYNES ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY WSWORKSHOP.COM.AU

After

SECRET SELFIE AGENT I’ve seen the light. After a date with this phone case, I’m now a full-blown selfie addict, writes Candice Jackson. SOMEHOW, CELEBRITIES AND Instagrammers always seem to post perfectly-lit selfies. Meanwhile, the rest of us ask strangers to take a “few” photos at an event, hate the way we look, and then take disgruntled selfies in dark corners, hoping the right filter will make everything better. Well, the secret’s out! There’s no magical celebrity glow and (probably) no hired lighting assistant. But there IS a phone case with some seriously amazing front lighting! While there are many magical phone cases out there, I’ve been trialling the Australian iGlo selfie case. This handy little contraption uses warm LED to bathe your face in soft and flattering lighting for the perfect snap. And (even better!) you can adjust the style and amount of light at the touch of a button.

Before

I never used to bother attempting selfies after dark. These days, however, I’ve been reaching for my phone a little more and showing off my iGlo to the “oohs” and “ahhhs” of friends and onlookers. After some experimentation, I found that the LED lighting is also great for providing a warm glow for

my food snaps at after-hours events. My selfies may not be on par with the celebs (yet), but they can keep their face-altering apps. I’ll be happy taking a perfectly-lit selfie with my iGlo. READ MORE ONLINE

QUICK-FIRE WITH GLASS ANIMALS:

5 MINUTES WITH GLASS ANIMALS

WHAT’S YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL? JOE: DOLPHIN. DAVE: AN AARDVARK. FAVOURITE FOOD? JOE: GRAPES. DAVE: SUSHI.

Ahead of their sold-out Brisbane show, Dave Bayley and Joe Seaward from Glass Animals spoke to Hannah Doody about career highlights, aardvarks and their upcoming album. THEIR UNIQUE BRAND of indie electro pop has seen UK band Glass Animals sell more than 450,000 copies of their first album, Zaba, worldwide. 32,000 of those copies were in Australia alone, with their song Gooey peaking at number 12 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 and going Gold in Australia. Now, the Oxford four‑piece is back, with their second album, How To Be A Human Being, due for release later this month. The milestones just keep coming; last year, the band played some of the biggest festivals in the world, including Coachella and Glastonbury. While the enormous crowds are always a thrill,

Dave Bayley (lead vocals/guitar) and Joe Seaward (drums) say they have the best time at the “ridiculous small ones”. “The ones where people are just stupid and hanging from the ceilings,” says Joe. “Like a few weeks ago in Berlin there was a stage invasion and the 200 people in the audience fit on the stage.” This year, they are touring their new concept album, which is centred around 11 diverse characters. The inspiration for each character comes from people Dave has met and voice recordings he made while on tour.

“You’ve probably had a taxi driver tell you a weird story, or you’re at a party and someone starts ranting,” says Dave. “I wanted to remember all of these tales so I started recording them and making up new characters.” The characters include a pro basketballer, a photographer, a waitress at a diner, and a cranky old lady (who might be linked to the closing track, Agnes). How To Be A Human Being will be released on August 26. The album is currently available for pre‑order from iTunes. GLASSANIMALS.EU

BEACHSIDE BOUTIQUE From fashion to antique jewellery, homewares and gifts, explore the treasures at Mooloolaba’s newest designer fashion and jewellery destination, Avenue J.

Sue Gaylard

Victorian 18ct yellow gold and enamel earrings

LIVING AND BREATHING antique jewellery for 17 years, Sue Gaylard’s passion has not faltered. After 15 years spent managing well-known Brisbane store Kellies Antiques, Sue has swapped city life for the beach town of Mooloolaba and created her own store, Avenue J. With a stunning range of antique jewellery available in-store, Avenue J also offers contemporary labels such as Phyllis & Mimosa, Brave + True, Spanish label Desigual, and Willow & Zac handbags. Sue had always envisioned a mixture of all things old and new for her store; she was interested in creating a fresh curiosity for her customers. “I wanted to offer a very different shopping experience on the Mooloolaba Esplanade,” Sue says. “I decided to make Avenue J one of the most unique and interesting stores yet seen on the Sunshine Coast. “It’s a delight to our customers, being such a feast for the eyes all in one shop,” she adds. Sue says one of the main things she loves about working with antiques is the anticipation and excitement that comes with not knowing exactly what you will get. “Always expect the unexpected, particularly with antiques, as you never know exactly what will turn up,” she says. The store recently sold a museum-quality Georgian diamond set necklace, which Sue says was a unique piece and a rare survivor from the French Revolution. Avenue J stocks a wide selection of jewellery from the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco periods right through to beautiful, modern, handmade pieces from all over the world.

Unique rings and earrings are always highly sought-after and Sue is confident that she will be able to find a beautiful piece suited for each and every one of her customers. “We also stock the unique and unusual for the true collector,” says Sue. “Thanks to the contacts I’ve made over the years, I’m able to source any special requests.” Despite the sea change, Sue still has a strong connection with her Brisbane friends and welcomes them to her new store. Are you taking proper care of your eyesight? Anne Et Valentin Opla brown-black $490

VISION IS ONE of our most treasured senses; many of us take it for granted but maintaining eye health is extremely important. Our devices play a huge role in our everyday lives and, for many of us, it would be impossible to go a whole day without looking at a screen for one reason or another. But the hours that we spend glued to our computer and smartphone could be damaging; it has been proven that the blue light emitted from our devices can cause fatigue of the eyes. The eye is a fragile organ and needs to be cared for properly. Fixing your gaze on something at a short distance without letting your vision relax can

also cause eye strain. Common symptoms of eye strain include constant blinking to refocus, blurred vision, red eyes and headaches. Many eye diseases have mild symptoms (if any) and can often go unnoticed, which is why it’s important to book in for routine check-ups with your optometrist and seek advice on how to

maintain your eye health and vision. Being proactive about eye health by seeking advice from a professional is the first step in the right direction when it comes to your vision. MADONNA RIGNEY OPTOMETRY 3/17 LYTTON RD, EAST BRISBANE P 3844 4648 MADONNARIGNEYOPTOMETRY.COM.AU

CLOSE KNIT Sweater season is in full swing! Here’s our guide to finding the perfect pullover this winter, writes Hannah Doody.

Not just for ’90s geeks, the turtleneck is one of the most sought-after styles this season.

FOR MANY OF us, sweaters in winter are just like bathing suits in summer. It’s a challenge to track down the right fit but once you find it you’re inseparable. Here’s a breakdown: CABLE KNIT This classic design has become a fashion blogger and street style staple. Perfect for: Layering, adding cool‑girl charm. Where to look: Country Road, Banjo & Matilda, Ralph Lauren. SLOUCHY FIT Whether they’re patterned, thick and chunky or made of fine cashmere, slouchy styles are characterised by a loose, relaxed fit. Perfect for: Petite frames, lazing around at home. Where to look: I Love Mr Mittens, Aritzia. stylemagazines.com.au

LIGHTWEIGHT Look for fine styles in classic cuts and highquality fabrics such as merino or cashmere. Perfect for: Layering, any shape or size. Where to look: Uniqlo, Witchery, Nili Lotan, Seed Heritage. MODERN CUTS Play with proportion through innovative shapes. Think bell sleeves, asymmetric hemlines, capes or poncho-esque styles. Perfect for: Those days when your standard sweater just won’t cut it. Where to look: Zara, Viktoria & Woods.

HIGH OR ROLL NECKS Not just for ’90s geeks, the turtleneck is one of the most sought-after styles this season. Perfect for: Those extra chilly winter days, petite frames (tip: ladies with larger busts might want to opt for a more flattering cowl neck). Where to look: Country Road, Seed Heritage, Viktoria & Woods. 43

WEDDING DATE CHECKLIST Before heading to a wedding, you need to make sure your plus-one ticks all the boxes. Here’s how to know, writes Amber Lowther. THEY CAN BE LEFT ALONE You’re off doing your thing with the bridal party but your date is totally fine on their own. They even give you a cheeky little wink when you walk past, yeow! THEY WON’T FLIRT WITH ANYONE As if they would even bother flirting with other people when they’ve got someone as great as you in their life. Let’s be real. THEY’RE NOT UNCOMFORTABLE WITH COMMITMENT Your date is totally comfortable with all the lovey-dovey stuff. You’ve got a great catch on your hands! THEY WON’T GET OUT OF CONTROL While your friend’s date has had too much to drink, is grinding on the mother of the bride and just tried to crowd surf, your date knows how to have fun without embarrassing you.

THEY’RE EXCITED TO BE THERE WITH YOU They’ve been looking forward to this for months and were excited when you asked if they wanted to be your date. THEY WON’T FREAK IF YOU CATCH THE BOUQUET You’re the lucky lady who catches the bouquet! Your date just laughs and gives you a big smooch. You’ve got a keeper! THEY WANT TO MEET PEOPLE CLOSE TO YOU This is the first big event you’ve been to together. Your date is keen to impress your friends and even thanked the bride and groom for the invitation! Sit back and relax knowing that you’ve picked the right plus-one; they’re a total sweetheart!

YOUR DATE IS TOTALLY COMFORTABLE WITH ALL THE LOVEY-DOVEY STUFF. YOU’VE GOT A GREAT CATCH ON YOUR HANDS!

GLAMOUR AT THE GLEN A new addition to The Glen Hotel makes for an exciting event space. A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS in Eight Mile Plains, The Glen Hotel & Suites was one of the first venues in Brisbane to install a permanent marquee more than 20 years ago. “We used to hire a marquee over the Christmas season as an extra venue for parties for our corporate clients,” says Cathy Fitzgibbons, Director of The Glen. “It became so popular, and we had so many enquiries about weddings being held here that we decided to install one permanently.” Now, after 20 years of service, the original marquee has been replaced with a new Germandesigned structure, which comes complete with glass walls, air-conditioning, LED lighting, chandeliers and its own private bar. The venue has quickly become a place for family celebrations, with weddings being the most popular event at The Glen Hotel & Suites.

“We want to make the day as easy and as wonderful as it should be for any bride and groom,” says Cathy. “We have everything all in one place.” The Glen Hotel & Suites’ newly-renovated lush courtyard garden now overlooks a serene local waterway, providing a picturesque backdrop for your special day. This all-encompassing venue can provide everything from wedding styling to 4.5-star accommodation for the wedding party and guests. Wedding packages are available with endless selections across menus and styling, with the experts at The Glen taking care of every last detail. To find out more, visit The Glen Hotel & Suites team at the Ideal Bride Bridal Expo, held at Brisbane City Hall on the weekend of August 21-22. “YOU CANNOT PUT A PRICE TAG ON FEELING GOOD WHEN YOU WALK INTO A ROOM!”

YOUR WEDDING IS a day to create memories for a lifetime. Selecting a venue for your ceremony and reception can be a tricky task, but the Brisbane Racing Club can make your special day come together. Your event coordinator should know your venue inside and out and know exactly what is required for your day to run smoothly so that you don’t have to deal with any unnecessary stress. In May this year, Hayley Bourke and Damon Koolstra held their wedding with Brisbane Racing Club; their ceremony took place at dusk, with a magical position under twinkling lights that adorned the iconic fig tree. Their reception was held in the Tote Room at the newly-refurbished Eagle Farm Racecourse. Hayley and Damon looked at five different venues during the planning process, but it was the assistance from the BRC Sales Manager

The event coordinators at Brisbane Racing Club are passionate about helping you create a day full of special moments, ensuring that communication is constant throughout the planning process. “There was a lot of contact from the first moment. Wedding Checklist: Venue Dress Photographer Smile

Achieve a dazzling wedding smile with le tooth. THERE’S NOTHING LIKE having terrific teeth to give you the confidence you need to smile on your special day; the talented staff at le tooth believe they can help you achieve a dazzling smile in as little as 15 minutes. When it comes to teeth whitening, there are many treatments available to cater for every individual, whether it be the bride or groom themselves, their parents or anyone who feels they want to enhance their smile. For those working towards having a dazzling smile for their wedding, it is recommended to seek advice well in advance, especially if cosmetic work may be necessary. Offering two popular teeth whitening treatments, le tooth will get your pearly whites looking extra sparkly for your special day.

Opalescence Professional tray whitening system requires a short 15-minute appointment. During this time, impressions are taken of your teeth to create the custom-fit trays used to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. The alternative, Zoom, is an in-chair whitening treatment that requires a 90-minute appointment. With Zoom, everything is done in the chair while you sit back, relax and watch Netflix as the time ticks by. With this treatment, teeth can become up to eight shades lighter.

Already have perfect teeth? Getting your teeth professionally cleaned with le tooth’s ultrasonic scaler will help to remove any hard calculus and polish away those nasty everyday stains brought on by all the good things in life, such as tea, coffee and red wine. Contact le tooth to find out how you can give your smile an extra sparkle on your wedding day. LE TOOTH 3/77 RUSSELL ST, WEST END P 3117 9900 LETOOTH.COM.AU

IF THE CROWN FITS

THE WHITE BUNGALOW WILL HOST ITS NEXT WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 13. TICKETS: $89.99.

Weddings are the perfect excuse to get creative with flowers, and the beloved flower crown is still a bride favourite. SOME OF US dream about our wedding from a very young age; how the dress will look, who will be in the bridal party, what we’ll have in our bouquet, and whether we’ll wear a veil or a tiara. But times change and new options become available. If you’re looking for a special touch, why not turn to a beautiful flower crown? This delicate accessory will bring some life to your outfit while perfectly complementing the true star of the day – your wedding dress. The White Bungalow specialises in bespoke flower crowns; the experienced floral designers can work with you to create your unique piece, with prices starting from just $59.95. Not just reserved for weddings, a flower crown is also the perfect accessory for your engagement party or bridal shower and this season sees flower-lovers spoilt for choice. Garden roses (particularly the David Austin Juliet variety), jasmine foliage, Hypericum berries and lisianthus are all in bloom. Tulips, jonquils, hyacinths and freesias also make for

gorgeous, delicate additions to a floral crown. The White Bungalow’s floral crown design workshop, which launched earlier this year, supplies students with the blooms and the skills to create their very own flower crown. You can also enjoy the complimentary glass of bubbles and a selection of nibbles throughout the two-hour class. Due to the popularity of the workshops at The White Bungalow, places are limited. To try your hand at designing your own flower crown be sure to secure your spot. THE WHITE BUNGALOW SHOP 1A/1208 SANDGATE RD, NUNDAH P 3260 6465 FACEBOOK.COM/THEWHITEBUNGALOW

WINTER FOLIAGE

IMPROVED APPEARANCE

DRINK YOUR WORDS

IN SUNNY QUEENSLAND, the cooler months are short-lived and mild at best. Far from snowcapped, deciduous trees and muted tones they bring, we are free to engage bold, bright colours and even an alfresco vibe if we wish. Fresh greenery is still perfectly on-trend with potted plants and ferns able to keep spaces looking fresh and inviting. Hanging planters, suspended foliage and vertical gardens all provide an effective styling solution that brings mass impact while still retaining a fresh vibrancy. If you’re trying to capture a winter theme, consider pairing foliage of a deeper green with metallics, including gold cutlery and crystal glassware. This can transform an otherwise simplistic setting into a sophisticated, more dramatic space. Green walls always look magnificent against a sleek monochromatic palette, while suspended greenery makes for effortless impact. Don’t be held back by the traditional dark winter looks; embrace the best of the Sunshine State with your event styling.

THE SCIENTIFIC AND botanical methods of skin revision can give you similar results as surgery, which means you can improve the health, function and appearance of your skin without going under the knife. The role of a paramedical skin practitioner is to address common skin concerns, including acne, rosacea, ageing skin, open pores, wrinkles, ingrown hairs and pigmentation. Skin can only begin to rebuild itself naturally after the cellular system is triggered and barrier function is repaired. Paramedical skin revision is designed to instigate a change at the cellular level, using the body’s natural healing functions to create positive skin renewal. As leaders of today’s skin revision market, the team at Integrity Paramedical Skin Practitioners works with high-grade ingredients to reach the skin at a cellular level and promote change and healing. This approach offers dramatic, sustainable results for those who have tried it all and thought their scars were for life.

LET’S TALK COFFEE flavours. We hear it with sommeliers and beer connoisseurs, but what about the language for those of us who dabble in specialty coffee? The power to explain your tastes is paramount – and not just for the coffee tweakers out there. Describing the experience and flavours of a delicious cup of coffee can be easy; you just need the right tools. You can now create a meaningful vocabulary to differentiate coffee flavours with the use of The Coffee Tasters Flavour Wheel. This visual map is the largest and most collaborative piece of research on coffee flavour in existence. The Flavour Wheel works its way out from broader categories; once you’ve identified a coffee you like the taste of, you can follow your tastebuds out to “cocoa” to then reach “dark chocolate” or from “fruity” to recognise “berry” and maybe even “raspberry”. The Coffee Tasters Flavour Wheel helps you identify your favourite flavours so you’ll never be at a loss for words again.

CONSCIOUS CLEANING

CHEWING THROUGH DATA?

SEPARATION ANXIETY

THERE IS NO better feeling than giving your house a big clean-up. But how do you know what’s in the cleaning products you are using? Many supermarket cleaning products that we use can be filled with nasty chemicals and suds that many consumers are unaware of. After suffering from endless episodes of dermatitis and respiratory allergies, I did some research and discovered that I was allergic to my regular cleaning products. Since switching to cleaning products with natural ingredients, I have found hundreds of “green recipes” online. One of these alternatives is using a cup of vinegar to freshen up baby clothes and towels; vinegar breaks down soapy residue in the clothes, leaving them soft and fresh. You can also deodorise your wooden chopping boards with lemon juice. There are many other natural alternatives to clean consciously and keep your home fresh. At The Soul Pantry, you can find a range of natural products supplied by extraordinary enterprise groups.

IF YOU HAVE a smartphone, chances are you’ve noticed that it can sometimes run out of data unexpectedly or far quicker than usual. This annoying predicament can be easily fixed by finding out which apps are using the most data and remembering to shut them down once you’ve finished using them. Limit background syncing. This is one of the main features that drains data. Even when you’re not actively using an app, this feature will continue to refresh content in the background. Be aware of what really needs updating and turn off any unnecessary push notifications. Disable auto-play videos. Facebook automatically plays videos in your news feed, whether you want it to or not. You can prevent this and save your data by opting to auto-play videos over wi-fi only. Set a data alert. Check your plan to see if you can get data notifications. If you are a Telstra customer, we’ll send you a text to let you know when you’ve used 50, 85 and 100 per cent of your monthly data so you are always in control.

WHEN A RELATIONSHIP comes to an end and you and your partner decide to go your separate ways, there is a lot to consider and it can quickly become an overwhelming process. Here are a few tips to assist you with smooth separation: Stay calm. There is life after separation; avoid hurried decisions and keep plans flexible. Seek professional help. Asking for help is a sign of strength; you can’t do everything on your own and there’s no shame in reaching out. Prepare a budget. Work out your actual monthly spend and set a strict budget to stick to. Seek legal advice. Everyone’s situation is different and the laws can change over time. Keep a diary. Especially of any incidents that relate to children. Document everything. Pay special attention to documenting your finances. Make agreements formal. If a property agreement is reached, document it properly. Plan. Having a plan to move forward will help reduce long-term stress and costs.

DO I STAY OR GO?

LOOKING FOR PREMIUM SERVICE?

TAME YOUR MANE

IN THE WORKPLACES of today, organisations are expecting more from their employees with regards to their performance and productivity. Motivation can make it easy for you to achieve expected targets and goals, while a lack of motivation is a telltale sign that you need to move on. Here are some signs that indicate you have become disengaged from your job: • You don’t believe the story anymore. The mission, vision and values of the company aren’t inspiring you. If you don’t believe the dream, how can you perform to your best? • You don’t connect with your boss or peers. You don’t feel a bond with those who can help you make work more enjoyable and engaging. • You feel limited in your development. You find you have run out of challenging projects and there is no opportunity for you to continue to improve in this workplace. A career is your ticket to a successful lifestyle, financial freedom and general happiness. Why waste time in a job that you know you should leave?

ASK SOMEONE TO tell you about a phenomenal in-store experience they have had. Most people will find it hard to think of one but almost everyone will be able to recall a bad in-store experience. These days, the almighty Google review tool means that every experience you have with a business can be recorded on the internet forever. Today, we are finding that our clients read our Google reviews more than they visit our website. We have had clients from interstate visit us purely based on the reviews they have read online; they trust the real-life stories from clients we have helped to find anniversary gifts, engagement or wedding rings, and even those who needed repairs. Our vision is to help tell your story through the power of your engagement and wedding rings and we want the experience to be one that you will always remember fondly. The team at Xennox Diamonds is committed to making your visit an unparalleled success. Why not experience it for yourself?

IF YOU WANT to keep your locks luscious this season, it’s time to step up your haircare game. To combat the harshness of the cold winter weather, there are some dos and don’ts to keep your hair looking lush: • Don’t over-brush your hair. The strands can become brittle in the dry winter air and overbrushing your dry hair can cause breakage. • Don’t neglect your treatments. A weekly professional treatment locks in shine and protects your colour. Keep your hair well conditioned to control those pesky flyaways. • Do visit a professional regularly for trims, treatments, professional advice and regular colour maintenance. Letting your stylist know how you treat your hair and what your concerns are is the best way to achieve the hair you really want. • Do book in with a professional for a clear gloss semi if your hair is looking a little lacklustre at any point. This procedure seals moisture into the hair cuticle and extends the life of your current colour.

SPRING-READY HOME

STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD

WATER DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME?

THERE IS NOTHING quite like giving your space a makeover, and with spring fast approaching, there is no better time to inject the new-season trends into your home. This spring, we will see pops of forest green, clean grey hues and crisp white accents back in the home in a big way, keeping spaces bright and fresh well into summer. Adding in metallic tones of gold and silver in the form of picture frames, wire baskets and pots for your fiddle leaf plants and ferns is a sure way to add a little more interest; plants breathe life into a home and will be a huge trend this spring. Opting for something with some sculptural appeal is the perfect way to add a little drama to the space. Look to plants with more height or some climbing plants that can cascade down hanging shelves. Looking to give your home a makeover for the upcoming season? Homemaker The Valley will be your one-stop destination to spruce up your space this spring.

A NEW WAVE of apartment building completions is on the rise and we’re already receiving calls from landlords who want to be one step ahead of the game when it comes to finding tenants for their new space. Despite what the developers might tell you, the majority of apartments in your shiny new project will be rented. This doesn’t mean they won’t also appeal to owner-occupiers, but investors tend to dominate off-plan sales, resulting in a lot of competition for tenants. If you want the best tenants faster (and for more rent), you might need to do what your neighbours are not doing; use a different agent! If the on-site managers have 20 or 50 or 150 apartments to lease and they’re all available at the same time, then it’s more than likely you will get lost in the crowd. Our knowledge of the local rental market and having a handful of apartments in your building (at most) allows us to give the task of leasing your apartment our full focus.

MOISTURE CAN AFFECT any building, causing damage and consequent expense to the home, whether it is an old or modern design. All buildings that contain tiled balcony slabs must be carefully inspected for moisture transmission through the tiled areas and into the underlying concrete slab. Too often the waterproofing has failed over time, or there may even be no waterproofing compound beneath the tiled floors, which leaves them exposed to the elements. Moisture can travel some distance into surrounding areas of the complex, leaving the interior walls and floor slabs vulnerable. The high level of moisture can also activate alkaline salt leakage. If this migrates towards the exterior surface of the home, it can result in failure of the paint coatings and loss of protection for the building. Chatting with a painting professional about your home is the best way to evaluate the water holding properties of all exposed slabs before undertaking any painting projects.

Sweet potato mash on German rye Moreish Café winter menu dishes

GIVE ME MORE

Moreish Café’s blend of flavours and textures combine to create mouthwatering delights!.

Set in the bustling heart of Stones Corner, local favourite Moreish Café serves up creativity on a plate, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. IN A SPACE that once held a butchery, Moreish Café now provides locals with scrumptious café meals with a special twist. The charming vintage-inspired décor is wonderfully complemented by the alfresco dining area set against the backdrop of the ever-buzzing Logan Road. We are greeted by one of the friendly waitresses and shown to our table on the sun-drenched footpath. Before long, we’re shrugging off jackets and soaking up the warmth of the sun’s rays. Across the street, a busker coaxes smooth tunes from his guitar and brings this little corner of Brisbane to life. Our coffee order arrives quickly; it’s immediately clear that it has been expertly brewed and poured, exactly the way a Campos flat white should be. 62

My berry smoothie is a refreshing follow-up to the warmth of the coffee. Not too sweet and with a pleasant tang, the biggest challenge is trying not to slurp it all down before our meals arrive. A quick glance at the new winter menu makes it clear that Moreish Café has added an innovative twist to the traditional brunch offerings. Keen to try everything, we opt for a variety of dishes to share between the two of us. We start our meal with the sweet potato mash on German rye. Atop the bread, two ripe avocado halves perch, basin-like, each cradling an egg that has been poached to perfection. Next, we try the beetroot hummus with Pugliese rye. Described as a fluffy brown sourdough, the warm Pugliese rye is topped with buttery smashed avocado, two poached eggs and sprinkled with

seeds, walnuts and goji berries. The unlikely combination works sensationally with the smooth beetroot hummus, keeping the dish light and tasty. Pleasantly full but always up for a challenge, we finish off our brunch feast with one last dish: the melt-in-your-mouth calamari. It arrives on a generous serving of Asian slaw, with a side of delicious chunky-cut sweet potato wedges. Moreish Café has expertly combined textures and flavours to create a winter menu offering that truly packs a punch. Some of these dishes just have to be tasted to be believed. RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Sushi Edo is now dishing up outstanding Japanese fare at their newest location, The Barracks. AFTER OPENING HIS first sushi restaurant just three short years ago, Johnny Lee recently opened the doors to his fifth Sushi Edo at The Barracks. It’s safe to say that Lee is doing something right; at each Sushi Edo store, customers eagerly await a seat at the sushi train on a daily basis. The word “Edo” is a nod to the Japanese Edo period, between 1603 and 1868, which saw the art of sushi-making spread all over Japan. Lee says the key to the success of Sushi Edo is simple: the entire team is committed to making sushi that everyone can enjoy. “Freshness is everything for sushi,” says Lee. While Sushi Edo’s standard formula undoubtedly caters for those looking for quick and fresh food, the opening of the new Sushi Edo restaurant at The Barracks in Petrie Terrace makes it clear that Lee is also keen to take care of customers who prefer a sit‑down-and-dine experience. The Barracks newcomer is fitted out with modern bar-style seating as well as cosy booth seating stylemagazines.com.au

for larger groups. The seating wraps around a lengthy train that totes the fresh sushi around the restaurant, providing easy access for all customers. At The Barracks location, customers will find all their Sushi Edo favourites, such as steamy pork gyoza, fresh chicken avocado nigiri, and aburi salmon and Wagyu topped with Sushi Edo’s popular homemade teriyaki sauce. In addition to the favourites, customers will be able to order warm udon noodle soups, assorted tempura and a selection of yakitori, all at the tap of their convenient tablet-ordering technology. Sushi Edo offers two hours of free parking at The Barracks and all plates are priced at $3.50 a pop. Whether you’re after sushi on the go or looking to meet friends for a relaxed dinner, Sushi Edo at The Barracks serves up the very best in Japanese cuisine for lunch and dinner, seven days a week. EASING NEEDLE DISCOMFORT

LOVE YOUR LASHES

MANETENANCE

WHEN IT COMES to needles, we are often asked “How much do they hurt?” And because each individual experiences pain differently, it is difficult to give a precise answer. The needles used in sclerotherapy (a treatment for varicose veins) are extremely fine. They are a slightly larger gauge than an acupuncture needle but much smaller than vaccination needles. If the needle tip is not accurately placed inside the lumen of the vein then the injected sclerosant, rather than running through the vein, can spill outside the vein and cause the tissue to expand. When this happens, slight pain can arise in the same way a boil does as a result of tissue expansion. Small amounts of spillage will always occur, but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. Some areas tend to be more sensitive, such as behind the knee and around the ankle. I always use the finest needles possible for these sensitive areas, and I make sure to select sclerosants that are least likely to cause pain.

WHEN CONSIDERING EYELASH extensions, many people want to know if they will damage their natural lashes. To protect your lashes, it’s important to ensure that you are visiting a trained technician with a very high standard. Improper applications and poor-quality products could result in eyelash extensions that won’t last and could affect your natural lashes. To achieve flawless lashes, the extension needs to be applied with a minimal adhesive to the individual eyelash. If the natural eyelashes are clumped to the extension with an excessive amount of adhesive, it can stunt the growth of the lash and painful damage can occur. This is why it is so important to make sure that your next eyelash extension appointment is with someone who specialises in eyelashes. Thanks to The Lash Bar Lounge, you can trust that every service at The Brow Bar uses safe and professional procedures to enhance the natural beauty of the eyes.

WE ALL SHED approximately 100 hairs per day as part of the standard hair growth cycle, but excess loss can be quite distressing. Hair loss for both men and women can be hard to accept and it can even make you feel self-conscious. Ageing men aren’t the only people who can suffer from loss of hair. It is a non-discriminatory condition, which means it can affect anyone. Some of the causes of hair loss or baldness (technically known as alopecia) can be severe hairstyles or treatments, hormone imbalances, illness or surgery, medications and nutritional deficits or ageing. If you’ve tried all the creams and lotions and are sick of seeing no results, but are reluctant to have hair transplant procedures or surgery, then Regen PRP could be the solution. This procedure stimulates hair growth using your own platelet-rich plasma; it is a relatively quick procedure, with mild discomfort and minimal downtime, and is a sure way to help you get your desired hair regrowth outcome.

EMBARRASSING PROBLEMS

WHAT MAKES A SUPER-SHRINK?

FINDING HAPPINESS

“AM I NORMAL?” This is a question that many people ask themselves. Asking your doctor about certain symptoms can be embarrassing because they are such personal matters, but you can rest assured that your doctor has been asked most of these questions before. Common questions include: Is my body functioning properly? Is my period normal and why is it always painful? Should intercourse be painful? Am I the same as every other woman? These kinds of questions are completely normal and no one should feel ashamed for wanting to understand their body. Talking to your local GP is a good place to start, as many of these symptoms are treatable. In some cases, though, you may need a referral to a specialist gynaecologist. Although many women have similar body changes, everyone is different and knowing your body and attending to its changes is the best thing you can do for your health and something that you should be proud of.

MY PRIMARY AIM as a therapist is to always be as helpful as possible. There are many and varied ways for therapists to interact with patients that are equally effective. But what makes the difference between a supertherapist and a stinker-therapist? A therapist’s ability to connect and maintain a warm and respectful working relationship is a critical start. While establishing a rapport is also essential, it is not enough to be really effective. Truly excellent treatment is only possible if the therapist regularly asks for feedback. Feedback is imperative as it ensures that the patient is being heard and understood, that the therapist is staying on track and covering the critical topics, and that the therapist’s style is a good fit. For feedback to be effective, it then needs to be integrated into the treatment. Finally, if the professional is routinely asking about your progress and outcomes, there is a great possibility that you will get what you want out of your sessions.

AS HUMANS, WE are no strangers to feelings of unhappiness from time to time, but avoiding those emotions altogether will not set you on the road to happiness. Creating a happy place to build yourself up is key when you’re feeling low; until we can accept unhappiness and become willing to work with it, we will remain unable to emotionally mature and resolve conflict. Our healthy happy place, where we build our self-respect, needs to be furnished with love, beauty and hope. This happy place can be somewhere we visit through our imagination, a room in our home or even just the company of Mother Nature in the infinite supply of happy outdoor spaces. The root cause of our unhappiness is never a person, place or situation, but our fearful, judgemental thoughts about it. So this month, let’s not forget that the ocean, the mountains or even just a walk around the block can help us face our unhappiness and sort through it, one step at a time.

SPLASH OF COLOUR Changing the colour of your locks can be daunting, but with a season change ahead it’s time to mix things up. IT’S NATURAL TO retreat to the warmth of our homes in the winter months, and many also opt to deepen the colour of their hair for aesthetic and maintenance purposes. But with spring right around the corner, it’s time to ditch the drab of winter and put some life back into your locks. It’s important to remember that changing your look (especially when going lighter) is not something to attempt at home; it can be damaging to your hair and fixing the results can be costly. With years of industry experience, the Fabrik Hair team knows exactly how to help you achieve your desired look without compromising your hair. If the hair has been previously damaged, your tresses may require a little more TLC before you start your transformation. The experts at Fabrik Hair can suggest many alternatives to ensure the best results.

Commonly used to give the impression of longer locks, hair extensions are back in a big way and the Fabrik Hair team is putting them to good use, creating fuller, expertlycoloured hair without altering or damaging your own strands. Extensions are a great option for many reasons, but are especially popular with those who like to experiment with colour without lightening their existing locks. Extensions allow you to mix up your everyday look at the click of your fingers. If you’re ready for a luscious new spring style, turn to Fabrik Hair’s award-winning team. REBEKAH WOODBINE, OWNER of Perfectly Smooth and a registered nurse, is currently studying to become a nurse practitioner and is in her third year of a Master’s degree. Undertaking new challenges to further improve her skills is something that comes naturally to Rebekah, especially when caring for those with severe acne or rosacea. Rebekah proudly promotes her ever‑growing menu of specialist treatments at Perfectly Smooth. Perfectly Smooth is home to a talented team passionate about providing every client with the very latest treatments, equipment and products to help them achieve their goals. For treatments that do not require the skills

of a physician, customers look to Perfectly Smooth’s experienced beauty therapists, Tonia and Sharon. These treatments include the fat-destroying Sculpsure method and other rejuvenation services such as microdermabrasion, advanced peels and general beauty pampering. Perfectly Smooth also strives to offer experiences beyond the usual aesthetic treatments, with three-time water polo Olympian Melissa Rippon working alongside the team as the clinic’s remedial massage therapist. POWER OF THE BROW Beauty is in the eyebrow of the beholder.

WITH MY BROWS STRONG, I FEEL STRONG. AND I’M SEEING THAT SAME CONFIDENCE EXUDING FROM CUSTOMERS WHO ARE USING BOOKI BROW.

CAN A WOMAN’S eyebrows define her confidence? According to Brooke Jesberg, owner of Brooklyn Beauty Bar and founder of new venture Booki Brow Co, the answer is a resounding “yes”. Brooke has spent 12 years designing a luxury brow range that is affordable, easy to use and that provides exceptional results every time. The initial release of Booki Brow Co products includes a brow powder compact and two essential brushes that are suited to several hair and skin tones.

stylemagazines.com.au

The Booki Brow Co compact has quickly become a beauty essential, converting even those who thought enhancing their brows was an unnecessary makeup step. While it has been designed for brows, the highly-pigmented formula means the brow powder compact can also be used as the perfect smokey eyeshadow, an eyeliner and a highlighter. “Precision is everything,” says Brooke. “Whether you’re looking for a strong arch or a classic shape, the refined synthetic tip of the Booki Angle Brush helps create a balanced look. With the precision of a pencil and the natural effect of a brush, you can now create any arch you desire.” With an aim to make perfect brows accessible to all women, each

Booki Brow Co product has been conceived, designed and developed with three things in mind: luxury, usability and high performance. But Booki Brow Co is more than just the next generation of brow cosmetics. “In my own day-to-day life, the only makeup I use is brow powder,” says Brooke. “It’s all I feel I need. With my brows strong, I feel strong. And I’m seeing that same confidence exuding from customers who are using Booki Brow.” With a flawless brow comes poise, confidence and strength. Using the simple three-step Booki Brow Co system, you’ll see perfect brows that last all day long. BOOKI BROW CO BOOKIBROWCO.COM

LEG VEIN MYTHS DEBUNKED Varicose veins can affect anyone; with so many misconceptions out there, it’s time to finally find out the truth. THEY CAN RUIN swimsuit season and knock the confidence of even the leggiest top model. But what are varicose veins and why do they occur? Commonly found on people’s legs, varicose veins can occur as a result of faulty valves causing blood to pool and the veins to distend. They often present themselves as blue wiggly lines, visible on the surface of the skin. Many people believe that varicose veins are a condition reserved solely for women; however, this isn’t true. Men can also suffer from the nightly

aches and pains that are brought on by varicose veins. The only difference is that many men are not as troubled by the physical presentation of varicose veins and do not seek immediate help. We’ve all heard someone say that sitting crossed-legged can cause varicose veins, but this is also false unless you have a predisposition to the condition. The real culprit is genetics. If your mother suffers from varicose veins, you have a higher chance of developing them.

A common misconception is that the only way to fix varicose veins is with invasive “stripping” surgery. Today even severe cases can be treated non-surgically during walk in /walk out procedures. Thanks to the modern techniques of Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) and Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA), the days of anaesthetic, hospitalisation and bandages are gone! FAMILY FIRST Celebrating 54 years of serving the Queensland community, Malouf Pharmacies is carrying on a family legacy. IN 1962, RICHARD Malouf opened the doors to his first Malouf Pharmacies on Albert Street in Brisbane City. With hard work, tenacity and relationship building, Malouf Pharmacies went on to establish a proud name for itself. However, it wasn’t until eight years after its inception that its popular beauty product line was launched. Beauty Bazaar, the pioneering movement that united beauty and pharmacy, was introduced in 1970, establishing Malouf Pharmacies as a destination for discerning customers seeking quality beauty products. Not long after this, in 1972, the pharmacy was relocated to Queen Street and Richard’s younger brother, Ian, joined the Malouf team. 74

Malouf Family. For the past 54 years, the Malouf family has shown unwavering support for local Australian brands. The cornerstone of their business, this relationship has proved pivotal to their success. Today, Malouf Pharmacies is one of Australia’s leading pharmaceutical brands and the largest privately-owned pharmacy group in Queensland, employing a team that boasts a collective 1000 years of experience across 17 stores. Dedicated to serving and supporting Queensland families, Malouf Pharmacies is committed to providing professional advice, friendly service and quality products.

Valentino Uomo Intense EDP spray 50ml $102

As a thank you for supporting their family legacy, this month Malouf Pharmacies invites you and your family to join them for their 54th birthday celebrations and take advantage of special offers across their pharmaceutical, beauty, health and wellness ranges. Awaken targeted cells and transform your skin with the latest toning and replenishing technology at Ella Baché.

laugh looking lines grow deeper, like the eyelids start to imagine slacken, and skin adopts a lacklustre appearance. only one Endermologie yourselfAfteronly better treatment, many

FOREVER TRYING TO recapture their youth, many people turn to drastic and painful cosmetic procedures to ensure a glowing complexion and an appearance that is free from cellulite and diet-resistant fat. Endermologie is the latest non-invasive treatment to be used by trained professionals. State-of-the-art Endermologie devices deliver an intense but pleasant stimulation as they roll over the patient’s body and face, massaging and manipulating the skin tissue. Endermologie was originally developed in the 1980s to treat burns and loosen scar tissue. Preoccupied with their recovery, it took a while for patients to notice that their wrinkles were also smoothing out and their cellulite was diminishing. As we age, our faces lose firmness and tonicity;

patients cite an improved complexion and toned skin. Fat elimination is not far behind with as few as six treatments needed to see results. As every individual is different, it is important to discuss your current lifestyle habits, problem areas and goals with a trained technician before beginning your Endermologie treatment. Ella Baché Myer Centre Brisbane and Ella Baché Carindale offer a free Endermologie consultation to understand your needs before recommending a treatment plan specific to your body.

MANY PEOPLE THINK certain colours look immature in home decorating, but when used in the right way they can create warmth and sophistication. We take a look at the 2016 hues that will freshen up your home in time for spring. Simple white: Transcendent and powerful, all shades of white are making waves this season and will probably continue to do so forever. Soft grey: A subdued grey has been coined the shade of the decade and is the modern-day neutral. It works beautifully in bedrooms and living spaces. Terracotta: Rich and warm, this burnt orange hue has had a huge resurgence in Milan at Salone Del Mobile and is a shade to look out for this season. Pair with turquoise for a Mediterranean-inspired feel.

LIKE A LOCAL Blogger Yasmin Zeinab pens a new Parisian travel guide, writes Paige Booth. BE GUIDED THROUGH the cobblestone streets of Paris, explore the best coffee spots and indulge in the ultimate Parisian fare with the help of a new guidebook, Sundays in Paris. Created by Brisbane-based blogger and lawyer Yasmin Zeinab, Sundays in Paris features stunning images from French photographers, accompanied by Yasmin’s own handwritten notes and a sleek design. Moving to the French city of Lyon in 2013, Yasmin took regular weekend trips to Paris, where she fell in love with the city’s charm. “There really is something magical about Paris, especially at night,” Yasmin says. “The first few times I visited, I was drawn in by the energy and beauty of the place and that was that – I’ve been in awe of the city ever since.” 82

Yasmin also has a special place in her heart for the eateries she visited on Sundays, which soon became the focus of her book. “Lyon, being a small city, is quite sleepy on a Sunday. There is not a lot open by way of cafés and brunch options,” Yasmin says. “Being Australian, this was such a shock to my system. When I moved to Paris six months later, I was so excited by all of the options.” It was this move that inspired the concept for Yasmin’s guidebook and Instagram account, which now boasts more than 40,000 followers. “It became a running joke with my friends that I knew everything about Sundays in Paris.” You can purchase the Sundays in Paris guidebook for $24.95 on Yasmin’s website.
