JORDAN KAHU – PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE, BRISBANE BRONCOS My greatest investment is something I invest in regularly. I invest my time, love and care for my children where I expect an abundant return. The greatest reward from this investment is having two respectful, grateful and good human beings who stand up for what’s right and are committed to get where they want without treading on someone’s toes to get there. My greatest investment is my kids.

DAME QUENTIN BRYCE – FORMER GOVERNOR GENERAL OF AUSTRALIA

JORDAN KAHU

“My GREATEST INVESTMENT is my kids ” “My GREATEST INVESTMENT has been my involvement in our proud Australian women’s movement”

It’s a tough question to ponder at 75 as I look back on enriching years of a long career, loved and loving family, enduring friendships, but a theme that has been constant and brought me great joy has been feminism. My greatest investment has been my involvement in our proud Australian women’s movement, working with others to eliminate discrimination to advance equality of opportunity for women in education, health and employment and always remembering that women’s rights are human rights.

My Greatest GEORGIE STEVENSON – GRADUATE LAWYER AND FITNESS BLOGGER From me, my greatest investment has been investing in my health and wellbeing. At the start, it was for aesthetic reasons but after a while, I noticed so many more benefits that I now could not go without. This investment has helped me in so many ways from curing my adult acne, balancing my hormones and kicking bad eating habits to the curb, to resolving my sleep issues, balancing my moods and feeling generally happier. Investing in my health and wellbeing is truly the investment that keeps on giving.

They say travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. For me, travel wasn’t a matter of if, it was always a matter of when. When I was 29, I moved overseas and spent my long weekends and holidays travelling through 20 different countries. I consider it to be a priceless investment and I gained so much life experience. My greatest investment is travelling, because I will cherish those memories for the rest of my life. JULY 2018

Keeping up with Steph & Laura Best friends Steph Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw have turned their passion for health into an empire. INTERVIEW TAMILLE HEAD What prompted you to launch KIC? We wanted to create a space that not only motivated girls to stay active and eat well by having an awesome exercise and meal plan to follow, but a space that reminded them of all the positive things that come from living that healthy lifestyle outside of ‘looking good’. It’s not a weight loss program, it’s not a quick fix or a challenge, it’s a lifestyle program. We’re both very passionate about promoting a healthy balanced lifestyle and KIC has been the perfect platform to do so. How did you both come to be involved in the wellness industry? STEPH: I was always sporty as a kid and loved subjects like P.E and health in school, but only really got into healthy eating/cooking when I started modelling and living out of home. I fell in love with cooking and making up healthy recipes on the spot. LAURA: I grew up loving sport and participating in every single one that I could…whether I was good at it or not! I just loved being a part of a team. I also loved healthy food and learning about how to make healthy substitutions in my baking. When I was modelling overseas and had deferred uni I finally took the plunge to start my blog and share my recipes, I had the blog for about six months and then Steph came to me about creating the e-book together…which was where our business was born! How did you meet? And when did you decide to work together?  We met at Melbourne Fashion Week around five years ago! We were booked on a lot of the same shows so we spent about a week together joined at each other’s hips and got along really well. We both travelled for a little bit for work after that but kept in touch. At that time Laura had a health and wellness blog called ‘food fit and repeat’ and I PAGE 6

came up with the idea to collaborate and create our first e-book ‘Keep it Cleaner’. The response for the e-book was so incredible, which is why we have continued to grow KIC as a brand ever since! What’s the key to wellness? STEPH: Happiness! And I truly believe happiness comes from balance. LAURA: Balance and moderation. Eating healthy is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle and to achieve that long term you need to have a balanced diet and life or you can’t sustain it. How do you achieve a healthy lifestyle balance? Listen to your body. When it comes to workouts, find what works for you, exercise isn’t about punishment! When it comes to eating, eat to nourish and fuel your body with all the right things that will keep you going day by day and will keep your tummy smiling. But balance also means not being too strict on yourself too, so don’t feel bad reaching for that slice of cake! Moderation is key. Balance doesn’t only fall

EATING HEALTHY IS NOT A DIET, IT’S A LIFESTYLE under eating and exercising either, work/life balance is just as important and everyone needs to balance out their priorities list so that ‘me time’, ‘family/friends time’ and ‘down time’ is just as high as work and everything else. How do you start your day? STEPH: With a glass of water and a kiss from my boyfriend Josh :) Then most mornings I fit my KIC workout in. LAURA: Always coffee and a KIC GIRLS workout. LAURA’S DAY ON A PLATE BREAKFAST Smoothie bowl

LUNCH Tuna lunch bowl I find if I start my day with a workout I have so much more energy to get through the day ahead. What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? STEPH: Friends and family :) … okay and cheese. LAURA: I have to agree on that one! Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?  STEPH: I want to be married and have a baby haha!! I can’t wait for motherhood - that’s half the reason I work so hard now, so that I can work from home and spend time with my family. I’m sure Laura and I will still be KIC’ing it together ;) LAURA: I would love to be thinking about starting a family, however the past 5 years have been absolutely unpredictable so I haven’t set any expectations for myself!

JULY 2018

ueensland’s freshest produce and finest suppliers will be on display later this month when the annual Regional Flavours presented by The Courier-Mail takes over South Bank Parklands once again in what is its 10th anniversary. As Australia’s largest free food festival, the two-day extravaganza will showcase the best of Queensland on a plate through street markets, a pop-up riverside bar and live cooking demonstrations on 21 and 22 July. With a host of some of the country’s best chefs and foodie experts, including Alastair McLeod, Sarah Wilson, Katherine Sabbath and MasterChef Australia’s own Matt Preston, Garry Mehigan and George Colombaris, this year’s Regional Flavours is set to be even more impressive than the last. Food-lovers can expect to treat their taste buds with exciting new products as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, teas and of course, Queensland wines. They’ll also be able to sample a brand-new product, combining two of Queensland’s most-loved beverages – beer and coffee. Merlo Coffee and Fortitude Brewing have collaborated to create Pot Shot Ale, which will be available on tap all weekend long. Dean Merlo, founder of Australia’s largest independently owned coffee company, Merlo Coffee, said the fruit flavours of Kenyan coffee suited the light style of beer being used. “Drinkers will get more of a coffee aftertaste with Pot Shot Ale than a big, bold punch of coffee flavour,” he said. And that’s not the only first-release sampling that festival-goers will get to partake in. Future Food at Regional Flavours is dedicated to showcasing and taste testing new food products and the latest food innovation undertaken by universities QUT and UQ. Set across six venues with free entry and all of the best tastes and smells you could imagine, along with kids activities and live music all weekend long, Regional Flavours should be at the top of any foodie-lovers agenda. The Queensland Taste Stage and Marketplace, located on the Little Stanley Street Lawn, is 100% dedicated to local chefs, cooks, farmers and producers where visitors will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the experts. Or perhaps you’ll be more drawn to The Hunting Club which is part bar and bistro, part stage. If you’ve got little ones in tow, stop by Kids Collective at Regional Flavours, where they can get involved in craft activities and immersive experiences. With so much goodness on show, there’s no denying that this year’s Regional Flavours will leave you as inspired as it does satisfied. FOR FULL PROGRAM; WWW.REGIONALFLAVOURS.COM.AU

Road to success 13cabs drive Jamie towards Paralympic dream.

J

amie Booth has always looked up to champion Olympic swimming sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell, in the hopes of one day becoming a Paralympic swimmer. Thanks to 13cabs Brisbane (formerly Yellow Cabs), she’s finally met her role models and their advice is simple: “Just keep working hard.” Working hard comes naturally to 17-yearold Jamie, who has used the 13cabs Maxi Taxi service to transport her to and from swimming training and school since she was five. “The service is outstanding and they’ve played a big role in helping me towards my Paralympic dream,” said Jamie. Born 14 weeks premature, Jamie has cerebral palsy and is profoundly deaf, but that has never stopped her from making waves in the pool, training with the PARA STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Start swimming team at the University of Queensland. Jamie’s regular morning driver, Gary Walter, has driven her for the last five years and also happens to be the former driver of Hamish Campbell, the younger brother of Cate and Bronte. “I’ve known Hamish for quite a while now, and it was great to finally meet Cate and Bronte — two real-life Olympians who’ve worked hard to get to where they are today,” said Jamie. Gary helped to organise Jamie’s meet and greet with the Campbell sisters after seeing her potential in the pool and said he was proud to work for an organisation that supports people with disabilities. “It’s great for me personally because I get to bond with inspirational young people like Jamie. She’s a great kid and I’m happy

I was able to play a part in connecting her with two of her heroes. 13cabs does a really good job connecting people within the community,” said Gary. 13cabs wants to help make Jamie’s 2020 Paralympic Games dream become a reality by sponsoring her training efforts and providing transport and financial aid. Wander the riverside streets and hidden laneways, discovering the carefully curated programme of entertainment and street acts, local restaurants and food vendors, market stalls and displays, a glorious Kids Zone and dozens of community groups.

“Now in its ninth year the 2018 Teneriffe Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.   As one of Brisbane’s most loved community events, the Teneriffe Festival has something for everyone – from historical to contemporary, punk to folk music, fashion to fitness, cheese to champagne and even pig races.  The Lord Mayor and I are proud to again support the Teneriffe Festival with more than $24,000 in funding – part of our commitment to creating exciting leisure and lifestyle opportunities for our city.   I look forward to seeing you on the day.” Councillor Vicki Howard CR VICKI HOWARD AND LORD MAYOR GRAHAM QUIRK

YOU THERE

2018 has brought with it the emergence of a fresh new national brand to promote the services of Professional Drivers right around Australia. We have designed a brand that takes the equity in 13cabs and reshapes it into a brand that pays tribute to the legacy and pride of Yellow Cabs. As you can immediately see our new logo is the trademark orange that has powered Yellow Cabs for decades. Take a closer look and you’ll see that the logo represents the important work our Drivers do – getting people from their A to their B. To become the cab company people choose to ride with every time, and not just the ‘first available’ or ‘first cab off the rank’, we’re making changes to ensure we stand for a brand that people trust, with absolute certainty, to get them where they need to go. When people think of booking a car - any car we want them to think of 13cabs and the team of professional Drivers that the brand supports. We want them to know we’re more than just another taxi company. This new look and feel connects everything together for 13cabs’ Drivers and Passengers – from a fresh new app experience to a more modern and user-friendly website. Even the cars on the road with the 13cabs brand will reflect this new way forward, helping Passengers enjoy a more connected experience at every turn.

MISHARI ALDHAFEERI DENTIST, ROSS PARRY DENTIST P 3211 1155 HELLO@DENTISTRYONGEORGE.COM.AU

Ross Parry has been providing high quality dental care to the people of Brisbane for decades. Just this month, he completed the sale of his practice to Mishari Aldhafeeri, who will continue to provide the same high quality general and cosmetic dentistry to new and existing patients. Trained at the University of Glasgow, with seven years of experience in the UK and three since relocating to Australia, Mishari has just completed a Master’s degree from King’s College London, and provides all aspects of general and cosmetic dentistry. In addition to dentistry work, he also acts as a clinical supervisor of the students at UQ and is passionate about teaching his patients about the link between oral health and general health. “There are links between the health of your mouth and other major chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. There is also evidence linking chronic gum disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We want our patients to understand that we treat them as a whole person, not just a set of teeth.” Despite leading a busy lifestyle, Mishari understands the importance of taking care of his health and wellness. “Wellness means taking care of your whole body and mind. Too often people focus on one goal, but forget to look at the overall picture,” he says. “Remember to make time for yourself every day. Too often we get caught up in our busy lives and push things to the bottom of the to-do list.”

SUZANNE WILLIAMS DIRECTOR, GRACE & GRIND P 0467 774 228 GRACEANDGRIND.COM.AU

The brainchild of Brisbane-based Suzanne Williams, Grace & Grind embodies all things career, lifestyle and wellness. It exists to help people find clarity, direction and purpose using a holistic health and wellness coaching approach. “Quite often people will fall into a career and at some point realise there is more to life than grinding away in a job that does not serve them,” Williams says. “Clients will say things to me like “surely there has to be more to life than this” or that now that they’ve had children they see things in a whole new way, but just don’t know what they want from life or how to go about finding it.” Thankfully, that’s where Grace & Grind steps in, helping people to sort through challenges like transitioning into a new career path, learning to understand themselves and becoming their most confident, happy self. Perhaps the reason she is so passionate about helping others find their perfect fit, is because Suzanne is a huge advocate for practicing what she preaches, and lives a life full to the brim of all things wellness. “We are constantly fighting against an overly stimulated world where too many people try to do and be everything. This is simply not possible and results in burnout, exhaustion, disappointment and unhappiness. The key to combating this is to focus on your own wellness first so that you can be the happiest and healthiest version of yourself, which ultimately means that you can then be of service to others.”

JACINTA LEES DIRECTOR, JACINTA LEES HEALTH & FITNESS P 0438 147 844 JACINTALEES.COM.AU

For Jacinta Lees, the key to wellness is as much about being mentally fit as it is about being physically fit. “It’s all about having that spark inside which lights up every morning and energises your world! It’s about loving yourself enough to eat well, exercise and move more, have confidence within yourself and squeezing optimism out of challenging situations,” she says. “It’s about setting goals and working towards them, embracing personal development, eating good, healthy foods that give your body the nutrients it deserves and thanking your body for being physically strong by moving more.” As the owner of the online health and fitness portal, Jacinta Lees Health & Fitness, Jacinta runs one-on-one and group coaching sessions which specialise in creating infinite change, as well as facilitating a range of small to large workshops in areas of people management and development, mindset, health, fitness and overall wellness. Most of her work, however, comes from being a change agent, where she works with clients to shift their mindset to a more functional and positive place where they themselves create life-long change. The purpose of this coaching is to have her clients set goals strongly aligned to their personal values, which allows them to embrace a life of abundance in everything that they do. “I believe it’s important to keep it simple. I encourage my clients to eat real food that is suitable for their body type, and exercise regularly in ways designed to help them meet any individual goal. Combined with a healthy mind, a person has no limits!”

Dr David Cowhig graduated from Kings College London dental school 30 years ago and migrated to Australia in 1998, setting up a wellness orientated dental practice after attaining a Fellowship in Nutritional and Environmental Medicine in the same year. He has spent the last twenty years as the wellness industry’s first choice for dental health. With two practices in The Gap and Newstead, Dental Wellness is popular amongst the health conscious community. “Wellness to me is a personal investment and commitment to taking positive steps to support your physical, mental and spiritual health so that you can love and be proud of yourself.” Dr Cowhig’s role in his patient’s wellness journey is to provide a 5-star service in optimising their overall dental health so their smile can reflect their inner health. “Your smile is your first impression. I believe the integration of aesthetic and holistic dentistry is the missing link in antiageing medicine,” he says. Providing total metal free holistic, aesthetic and implant dentistry with the help of a dedicated team and in using his principles of the Oral Fitness plan, he has allowed his patients to minimise their risks of chronic illness linked to poor oral health. “For my own wellness, I focus on living a holistic lifestyle, eating nutritiously, exercising appropriately with Pilates, gym or walking our pug, and remembering to feed the soul by laughing with friends and enjoying an evening meal around the table with my family.”

ELLE DE WET STUDIO OWNER, ANY.BODY PILATES 8/46 DOUGLAS ST, MILTON P 0413 021 369

To Pilates instructor Elle de Wet, wellness means the ability to cope with whatever life throws at you. “True wellness to me is having the audacity not to be hindered by your failures. Knowing that life is long, and we all have to navigate the ups and downs. So yes, it’s nice to be in a good routine, to achieve your daily physical activity goals, to eat healthy and look after your mental health all the time, but the reality is that we can’t be perfect all the time. So, to me true wellness is the ability to come back after you fall off track, to be balanced in your thinking and understand that health is not about a 200m sprint but about lifelong skills and lessons learnt,” she says.  Her business, any.BODY Studio is a calm place to come to achieve your movement goals no matter what your physical goals or constraints. It is a boutique reformer Pilates studio set in a peaceful setting with a university qualified trainer that understands injuries – prevention and management.  Elle knows that it’s all about taking small steps to achieve big gains. “In hindsight where I am today in my wellness journey is far from where I have come from. But I didn’t wake up one morning and was the person I am today, there has been many ups and downs. But over the years I have learnt to navigate the downs and ensure that the time spent in the downs become less and less.” “I look after myself so I can be the best version of myself, and I believe that inspires my clients to look after themselves.”

DR LINDA WILLIAMS DIRECTOR, ARTISAN COSMETIC & REJUVENATION CLINIC P 3852 3211 ARTISANCLINIC.COM.AU

With a wealth of industry knowledge, Dr Linda Williams is somewhat of an expert on all things skin wellness. What does wellness mean to you? Wellness is about both feeling and looking healthy, vibrant and fresh. If people tell us we look tired then we’ll soon feel flat, regardless of energy levels. If we can feel positive, self-confident, ready to face the world, and have the mental and physical energy to back it up, I think that sums up wellness for me. It’s amazing the extra bounce it adds to your step.  What’s the key to skin wellness? Skin wellness is probably not that much different from general wellness. Skin needs to be loved and looked after, kept hydrated and protected in order to function at its best and it will be reflected in a healthy, glowing complexion. Skin is a dynamic work-of-art that reacts and responds to our internal and external environment on a daily basis so, we need to stay motivated to look after it. Like so many things in life, if we can reduce stress and inflammation, our skin will function better and boost our self-confidence on a daily basis. And we can never forget sun protection living in this climate. How do you look after yourself and your skin? I’m trying to have a better work/life balance. Dinner with my husband, catching up with my sons, and socialising with friends re-invigorates me. I exercise which is important for both my head space and my body but always wish I could do more.

How to ease your meal time angst

Has the cup runneth over?

Who’s your style icon?

I haven’t met a person yet that doesn’t occasionally find meal times stressful. This often leads to skipped meals, poor choices or multiple costly shop visits. Meal-times should be a joy not an inconvenient chore and we all know that what we eat has a huge impact on how we feel every day.  Taking 10 minutes each weekend to plan your meals for the week ahead whilst making a shopping list means you not only buy what is needed but you know exactly what you are eating and when. All the hard decision making is taken care of in just a few minutes! Even better, if you can schedule a bit of time on a weekend to prep as much as possible, the result means even less to do at the end of busy weekdays and we could all do with that relief! Meal planning is such a simple tip but it can take a while to turn into a habit, but trust me, try it for a month and just see how much money, time and stress you save.

I often get asked what specialty grade coffee actually means? It is certainly a hot topic currently. The market in Australia has changed significantly over the past 30 years. Previously, coffee roasters all around Australia were seen trying to get their hands on the most delicious and expensive coffees to demonstrate they were clearly specialty. Some would argue that specialty coffee means nothing today, as there is no specialty watch dog. It’s increasing just a marketing term used by roasters who are often using commodity-based coffee. From this overuse of the term today, sadly, there is no tangible meaning to specialty that everyone agrees to. Watch this space as roasters start to differentiate themselves. As a pioneer in the field we do not rely solely on this term ‘specialty’ but look to educate our customers on how we purchase green beans, prepare and serve our delicious coffee.

Everyone should have a style icon they look up to for inspiration and guidance. With social media, we can be easily influenced by what we should be wearing in this fast fashion era. If we take a step back and look at some true style icons from a more simpler time where comparing one’s style to another rarely happened. Take Steve McQueen, a style icon from the 50s through to the 80s. Named the ‘King of Cool’ he emulated the laid-back style of the weekend mastering that fine line of being smart enough for a multitude of occasions. Denim and leather were the key looks that McQueen so effortlessly sported. However, when McQueen suited up he did it like no other. He practically embodies the sentiments of strength, wealth and stardom. If you don’t look as good as McQueen, anyone can embody those feelings in the perfect suit.

Are you speaking the same language?

Finding a new reason to smile

Buyer verification service

People often say that they are frustrated by not being ‘heard’ by their partners. And this is quite a common complaint. It seems your partner hears you one minute and forgets the next. Sound familiar? The truth is that everyone listens differently and communication styles can influence that. Here are some mindset shifting tools you both can use to improve communication. Consider this: your partner may be processing information differently or they just may need time to digest the information. Perhaps there are also outside factors that you haven’t yet considered. If the one you love can’t retain information then consider writing it down for them. This can be vital if they continue to miss crucial stuff. Throw a post-it-note on the fridge if it helps. Give these tools a try or engage a professional to help you improve the dynamics of your communication and your relationship.

Previously, for many people who had lost teeth the only solution was dentures. But now one of the biggest innovations in dental medicine is paving the way for new, beautiful smiles: dental implants. Dental implants have become a popular solution due to the many benefits and conveniences they offer. For those with missing teeth, implants have surpassed dentures and bridges to become the new goto procedure. What makes them so popular? Ultimately, it is how much they feel and look like natural teeth! Dental implants are longlasting, perfectly fitted to you, and do not need to be removed. They truly are the most convenient solution to missing teeth. Like most procedures, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. However, in the hands of a medical professional trained in restorative dentistry, you can be assured that they will help you make the right call about which approach to take.

Are you in the process of buying an item of jewellery from another member of the public? If so, it’s essential to verify the seller’s description before you commit your hard-earned cash. It’s also important to pick a suitable venue to meet the seller. The answer is to use our Buyer Verification Service, by appointment. Our premises provide a neutral place for a buyer and seller to meet. As a fully qualified gemmologist and registered NCJV Valuer, I carry out a full independent assessment of the quality of the item while both parties wait. Standard items can usually be appraised and valued within the hour. The valuation will confirm metal type and caratage, item weight, gemstone identity, size and quality, and value. Terms & conditions apply. If you’re unsure about buyer verification, don’t hesitate to pop in store or make an appointment to talk to us.

DENTAL ADVICE

with Dr Anne-Maree Cole

The glue that holds everything together

Smooth skin can be all yours

Taking care of halitosis

Using glue to treat varicose veins will now become more frequent and less controversial since the publication of recent international trials. These trials have published results demonstrating equivalent safety and efficacy in comparison to endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of saphenous vein incompetence. Not all varicose veins are suitable for treatment with glue. For certain patients, it’s a great way to go because you might not even need to wear compression stockings. A great advantage if you are having treatment in Brisbane in the summer time! It’s also a relatively quick procedure to perform and there is only one injection needle required to insert the catheter. Glue however is not an effective method of treating varicose vein tributaries and will often need to be followed by Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy in order to ensure success.

Fraxel is a fractionated laser which is a safe, effective and proven treatment to provide rejuventation for a number of skin concerns. Sun damaged and aging skin: Fraxel 1927nm targets superficial skin concerns by reducing sun spots, brown discoloration, and solar elastosis (fine lines). Fine lines and wrinkles: When fine lines and wrinkles are of a concern, the Fraxel 1550nm is used as it penetrates the skin a little deeper by stimulating collagen and elastin. Acne scarring: The 1550nm Fraxel is used again for superficial acne scarring. Acne scarring is often coupled with other treatment modalities to ensure the best result. Facial Pigmentation Freckling and brown discolouration is another indication for Fraxel 1927nm. The safely targets the pigment in freckles leaving behind a safe and rejuventated glow.

Having bad breath, or halitosis, may not only be a social embarrassment, but could also be a sign that there’s something that requires attention in the mouth. Our teeth, tongue, gums and tonsils have many crevices for sulphur-producing bacteria to harbour and breed. There are many conditions and behaviours that can contribute to bad breath. Although there are many products on the market that target eliminating bad breath, the most effective thing to start incorporating into your home dental care is tongue cleaning.  It is best to use a tongue scraper on a daily basis, aiming towards the back of the tongue and removing the white/ yellow coating that’s often present.  Flossing is also essential.  Remember you only have to floss the teeth you want to keep. Contact James Street Dentists for a fresh breath wellness appointment and to receive more tips on resolving any breath issues that concern you.

Health & wellness, sorted Holistic food and nutrition coach Lee Holmes shares her keys to wellness. Talk me through your daily food and exercise regime? Being active is something that I always try and incorporate into my day, rain, hail and shine. I start my morning nice and early with a walk. Walking helps clear my mind and improves my overall wellbeing, plus it’s the easiest and cheapest form of exercise there is. Finding the right exercise for you – whether it’s sweating it out at the gym, finding your inner zen in the yoga studio, swimming at the beach or strolling in the park can be fun and inspiring! Find what works for you and stick to it – you’ll feel all the better for it. For breakfast, I like The Good Sort® Plant based Naked! flavour blended with an assortment of berries. That’s my go-to most mornings when I have a bunch of things to do. Mid-morning, I’ll probably have a chai tea. For lunch, I like to try different things but lately in winter I’ve been making lots of slow-

roasted veggies and turning them into soups with garlic and prebiotic vegetables to boost my immunity. In the afternoon, I like to have a half serve of The Good Sort® (Coffee! or Vanilla! flavour). It always gives me a little pep up! I like to end the day with something warm and nourishing like a soup or a stew. As a holistic food and nutrition coach, what made you so keen to get on board as a spokesperson? I see a lot of people every day who are stuck in a diet rut. I think once you make that mental shift and decide it’s not about weight loss and

more about optimum health your body will respond naturally. Wellness is really not about deprivation or punishment. It’s about awareness and the power to choose a lifestyle with good foods and exercise that feels right for you. That’s what I love about The Good Sort®. They understand that there’s no one right diet for everyone and what works for one person may not work for the next. Their nutritional shakes focus uniquely on you and gaining better health, balance, instincts, and self-confidence. READ MORE ONLINE

How have you added The Good Sort® into your wellness plan and how has it affected you? I’ve included The Good Sort® in my morning routine because it’s a convenient Go-To Meal™ or snack that’s packed with key organic vitamins and minerals and high-quality ingredients like probiotics and digestive enzymes. These are the kinds of nutrients that women need on a daily basis to help balance their bodies and keep them energised. The other good news is that it’s a simple, all-natural solution for women on the go! MARY-LOUISE CONDON CONDUCTS A ONE-ON-ONE PERSONAL CONSULTATION.

New month, new you? We’ve heard it all before. Personally, I’ve used almost every excuse in the book to avoid starting the dreaded weight loss journey, AKA “the diet”. Following a strict meal plan is not everyone’s cup of tea, it can be a lot harder to say no to that slice of birthday cake at the office than you thought (I say this based on a lot of experience). For the purpose of understanding how my body responds to different types of diets, I decided to undertake The Compounding Lab’s (compoundinglab.com.au) Clean Food Mimicking Fast over the first five days of May. I was instantly attracted to the Clean Food Mimicking Fast because it ran over the STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

course of just five days. This amount of time is nothing in the grand scheme of things! My role as Editorial Coordinator at Style Magazines means that I am constantly in and out of the office. Whether it be dashing out

The diet each day consisted of a special blend of vegetable protein, good fats and low GI carbohydrates. I began the fast at the beginning of the week on a Tuesday (we all know that the “diet starts on Monday” saying never works) and have summed up how I felt over the course of the five days. Make sure you visit our online space to read my five day diary. We also asked Lou (founder of The Compounding Lab) for a few tips when it comes to undertaking The Five Day Clean Food Mimicking Fast.

A loss of five kilos in five days? It’s possible. for last minute appointments, assisting at photoshoots, conducting personal shopping sessions or pulling product, I am always on the go! Preparing meals in advance can be difficult for me as my schedule changes week to week. I tend to eat whatever is available whenever I get a spare moment.

PHIL DI BELLA’S TRANSFORMATION Brisbane personality and Chairman of Di Bella Group, Phil Di Bella has completely transformed his life since joining BOXR, having lost 60kg so far. “I credit my success to the professional, tailored training and emotional support I’ve received,” he says.

CRAIG’S DAY ON A PLATE

IN THE RING

With the second half of 2018 now upon us, we discover the ideal place for you to kick some fitness goals.

A

s the name suggests, BOXR is a boxing gym that caters for everyone, all levels of fitness, abilities, from beginner to professional boxers. But it’s not just a boxing gym, as owner Craig McKim confirms. Not by a long shot. BOXR also runs school programs for fitness and anti-bullying, fitness and conditioning programs, corporate training and team building programs, and training everyone from amateurs to professional sporting teams. A qualified Rehab trainer, member of Nutrition Australia and qualified nutritionist, Craig is passionate about offering qualified nutritional advice and programs. “I am sick of the ‘personal’ being taken out of Personal Training, so all my trainers are career trainers, current or ex-professional sports people. We have the best people so our clients get the best results,” he says. With a new gym set to open any day now in the Valley Metro complex, the BOXR movement continues to grow.

I train early on an empty stomach, and have a low carb protein powder after training at about 6am. BREAKFAST

Granola with almond milk, fruit and yogurt, or eggs, avocado, ham, spinach in an omlette or on wholegrain toast. MID-MORNING

Juice of some sort (carrot, ginger, orange is a favourite at the moment). LUNCH

Usually something like Sweet Potato salad with chicken, or chicken burger on low carb bun. AFTERNOON SNACK

Nuts, or even a chocolate chip cookie. DINNER

Is usually meat and veg or salad. Weekends I am pretty easy with food, I am not a believer in being super strict. If you are too strict with food, you aren’t living in my opinion.

ENDO

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of QENDO (Queensland Endometriosis Association). So, what’s all the fuss about?

O

ne in ten women suffer from endometriosis, and the delay in diagnosis is a staggering nine years worldwide! Endometriosis is a condition that potentially affects women from when they first menstruate, until the time of menopause. It occurs when the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) grows outside the uterus, inside the abdominal cavity. The body mounts an immune response to this tissue, causing pain. How can there be a delay of nine years when the symptoms of endometriosis are often confronting, debilitating and rob young women in their prime of their ability to lead a normal life?  The answers lie in several areas. Firstly, because we are speaking about symptoms such as painful menstrual periods, heavy menstrual periods, painful intercourse and pain or discomfort with bowel motions or urination at period time, young girls and young women often put up with these symptoms out of fear of being embarrassed or when they are told by their parents that “it’s normal, I had it too”.  Secondly, there has been a general lack of PAGE 48

awareness in the medical community generally of what all of the symptoms of endometriosis are, which has led to the huge delays in diagnosing this disease! Often, misdiagnoses are made because young hospital doctors or GP’s fail to put the symptoms together. Common misdiagnoses include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), irritable bowel syndrome, ruptured ovarian cysts and even appendicitis. When pain is cyclical, endometriosis should at least be considered.  It is not uncommon for young women who have obviously had symptoms of endometriosis for many years who have presented to several GP’s seeking a diagnosis for their symptoms. Sometimes they have

already seen one or more gynaecologists and are still yet to have a definitive diagnosis made. Endometriosis becomes a problem when young school age girls are sent to the sick room with (period) pain, when they miss school or have regular time off work with “period problems”. Later it can affect fertility and along the way can cause life to be unenjoyable. They may avoid sport and sometimes even social interaction.  An early diagnosis is very important with this disease and it’s suggested that parents of young girls with symptoms of possible endometriosis present to their GP early. Game on! Local sporting hero, Bronwen Knox is taking her impressive water polo career to new heights. As she prepares to compete at the FINA World Cup later in the year, along with Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Queensland water polo player, Bronwen Knox, is treading far more than water. She is currently balancing a busy training schedule, which consists of 2-4 hours of gym sessions, 3 swim sessions and 3-4 water polo specific sessions a week, along with a fulltime job and studying a law degree full-time. With a background in swimming, it wasn’t until the Sydney Olympics in 2000 that Bronwen became interested in the sport. “My parents drove us down to attend some events. When the Women’s Australian team made the Gold Medal match, my mum and I were lucky enough to get tickets. It was the first proper game I had ever seen, and I remember thinking that this was the sport for

me,” she says. This year the Aussie Stingers are preparing for World Cup in Russia, followed by the World Championships next year in South Korea in July. “We currently only centralise our program a year out from the Olympic Games, which means in the years leading up we have a number of domestic based camps throughout our domestic season and from April to September we spend our time travelling to train against other countries and compete at other tournaments,” Bronwen says. “Obviously, my schedule is very busy and doesn’t leave me much down time. I always try to make sure that I am eating right and getting enough sleep, but I also try and carve out some time for myself each week. I’ve recently got into the ritual of post my Saturday morning

session, heading to a café and enjoying a delicious breakfast while reading a book, the paper or catching up with family or friends. I love discovering different places in Brisbane.” WATER POLO QUEENSLAND WATERPOLOQLD.COM.AU

It’s an interior style that continues to reinvent itself. Donna Spozetta from Hamptons Style shares her advice on creating the Hamptons look at home.

Bring the

Hamptons Home

The Hamptons are beachside suburbs north of New York and I love the relaxed, yet elegant feel of the area. While we’re a long way from the iconic East-Coast destination, it’s an interiors style that’s a perfect fit for the Australian climate and relaxed way of living. When it comes to recreating that Hamptons look in your own home, remember that it’s more of an overall lifestyle than just a design trend. It’s all about ease, and building with a calming colour palette of blues, whites, neutrals and greens. Play with texture using materials such as rattan and natural linens. Create personality and life in your space by layering cushions, throws, blankets, artwork and lamps. My top tip as an Interior Designer though is to always add a touch of black in every room.  Our Interior Designers all have a passion for interiors and get genuine enjoyment from working with clients to achieve their desired style on the nominated budget. We work hard to solve design problems and all have in depth and long-term knowledge of the interiors industry and can help transform your home with you.
