WINTER WONDERLAND TAKE ME AWAY.

Sheike

WHO KNEW THAT missing Queensland winters was a thing? With the most beautiful days sprouting from sunrises and the evenings filled with early darkness, I could get used to the cosy fashions we are delving into this month. Take a tip from our magazine as we edit how to wear colour and what neutrals work best (Pages 34 & 37). Excitement in the fashion industry leads to change, which in turn demands innovation and collaboration. Adapting to change requires a creativity that pushes boundaries, which is what I thrive on as an Editor. Speaking of change, our cover this month was inspired by the arrival of The Royal Ballet at Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Influenced by the incredible performances inspired by the writing of Virginia Woolf, we reinterpreted traditional winter fashion in a modern storytelling realm. See Woolf Works come alive on our pages as we tap into this thoughtful and ambitious production which will be ready for your eyes from June 29 to July 2 (Page 31). Talking of beautiful Brisbane, our feature story this month raises the bar. As work begins on the biggest developments in our city’s history and Brisbane blossoms into a billion-dollar metropolis, we could not be more ready to step into this shiny new world (Page 14). With winter landscapes at their best, we suggest the best Australian restaurants to warm us up on a quick weekend getaway (Page 57).

TRANSFORMATIVE BRISBANE Are you ready for a billion-dollar Brisbane? Our city is experiencing its most transformative decade ever, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

Queen’s Wharf Brisbane

WORK HAS BEGUN on the biggest developments in our city’s history. And it is safe to say the monumental reconstruction about to take place will transform Brisbane to a greater degree in the next five years than any changes have in the past five decades. With these major developments in the works, get ready for an injection of vigour into the laidback Brisbane lifestyle that will change the way we dine, socialise, shop and escape for the weekend. Queen’s Wharf Brisbane – a new world-class integrated resort development – is one of the projects predicted to put our city on the map as a tourism, leisure and entertainment destination. Today, Queens Wharf Brisbane is comprised of underused heritage buildings, obsolete government buildings and neglected riverfront land. But with 14

construction of the new $3 billion entertainment and lifestyle precinct, covering more than 26 hectares across land and water, the CBD and river’s edge will soon become a world-recognised destination. Queen’s Wharf Brisbane marks the site of the Brisbane’s first European settlement nearly 200 years ago. The new precinct, expected to open in 2022, will see the area’s many beautiful heritage properties revitalised and reactivated to blend Brisbane’s historic and contemporary architectural styles. The world-class precinct will offer 50 restaurants, cafés and bars, including hatted fine-dining restaurants, more than 1,000 premium hotel rooms operating under five brands that are new to Brisbane – including The Ritz-Carlton and The Star-branded hotels – a signature Arc building with

a dazzling elevated Sky Deck designed to offer 360-degree views of the river and city, and 2,000 new apartments. As well as this, the multibillion-dollar development will make better connections within the city by providing the CBD with a pedestrian bridge to South Bank, and creating pedestrian access underneath Elizabeth Street and Queen’s Park. It is in this location that Brisbane locals and tourists can enjoy up to 12 football fields of public space, including subtropical landscaped walking routes, a moonlight cinema and an impressive river arena for the hosting of light and water shows. The precinct’s construction period will create about 2,000 jobs while more than 8,000 jobs are predicted once the development is operational. It is also projected that Queensland will see an increase JUNE17

Howard Smith Wharves

of $1.69 billion spent on tourism annually. While Queen’s Wharf Brisbane is transforming the city with a world-class development, work has commenced on another major construction project just down the river. A site that housed a large shipping company and water-police headquarters in the 1960s will soon be transformed into a riverside lifestyle precinct. Sitting underneath the landmark Story Bridge, the Howard Smith Wharves project will connect the New Farm Riverwalk with the CBD while providing more than 2.7 hectares of public open space, an exhibition centre, new restaurants and cafes, and a 164-room hotel. Existing heritage buildings on site will house markets, festivals and exhibitions. As well as dining and entertainment options, the Howard Smith Wharves project is set to offer water-based activities and berthing options, making it the perfect destination for inner-city residents and visitors alike. It’s safe to say that the transformations ahead highlight how Brisbane’s future is brighter than ever. READ MORE ONLINE

GOING OUT FOR DRINKS WITH A GAL PAL LOOKS INSTANTLY COOLER WITH THE X-PRO II FILTER

DOUBLE-TAP THAT The Instagram life might be changing the way we view ourselves, writes Siobhan Taylor. I’LL BE HONEST with you: I use my Instagram to make myself seem cooler than I actually am (full disclosure: I don’t do it very well). I get caught up in a pleasure-pain cycle of pseudo-stalking others’ seemingly better lives, and in turn fabricating my own (hopefully enviable) social-media persona. The goal? To present myself as a super-chill gal who goes to cool events, is a bit of a high-roller, and has a huge social circle. It’s so far from the reality that it makes me laugh.

I AM STILL THINKING IN THE BACK OF MY MIND, ‘WILL THIS MAKE A GOOD PHOTO? WHAT WOULD I CAPTION IT?’ When all we see are picture-perfect filtered snapshots, we inevitably compare them with our own life and (sometimes) find it lacking. You know, it’s the whole “grass is greener” thing. While we have developed an awareness of the manipulative reality of magazines, we are less likely to critique Instagram photos in the same way because, despite being better than ever at recognising

16

photo-manipulation, the image feels so real because we know the photographer. Or, we feel like we do. Not only a platform for friends and acquaintances, we also follow travel blogs, beauty gurus, socialites, and celebrities – dubbed “influencers” – and the snapshots we see of their personal lives make us feel like we know them and trust them. For a moment we get an insight into their experience and our reality is connected with theirs. I’m not particularly active on Instagram, yet I am also guilty of capitalising on opportunities to make myself look cooler, more interesting, and more exciting than I might actually be. Going out for drinks with a gal pal looks instantly cooler with the X-Pro II filter, while a selfie at the beach was probably the result of at least 20 attempts. Even as someone who rarely uses Instagram, I am still thinking in the back of my mind, “Will this make a good photo? What would I caption it?” Don’t get me wrong, I love my life. I have a fulfilling job, a wonderful circle of friends and family, and hobbies that bring me joy, but sometimes I get lost in the rabbit hole of Insta-jealousy. Allowing myself the space to exist outside of my iPhone has been critical in finding greater joy in my life. I still edit my photos and I still trawl the explore feed, but the magical pull of Instagram has less of a hold on me.

FINANCE BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT Suncorp’s concept store in Carindale will change the way you think about the home buying process.

Attributed to Lynne Sutherland, Suncorp EGM Stores and Specialty Banking. MY FIRST FORAY into retail was working in my parents’ general grocery store in New Zealand. I would help by serving customers before I went to school, and while I may not have realised it at the time, these early experiences gave me valuable insights into customer service and the challenges and rewards of running a retail business. Since then, I have always been intrigued by the art and science of retailing. Creating interesting and inspirational places customers want to visit can involve an elusive combination of elements. And what I have found is that successful retailers are clear on who their customers are and how they can support their needs. At Suncorp, we’ve taken inspiration from some of the world’s leading retailers to redefine the financial service experience in Australia. Our new concept store, which opened in Westfield Carindale last month, is a testament to this new approach. We’ve reimagined the traditional bank branch and insurance shop to create a space designed to help our customers with the moments that matter to them most. Our concept store brings together products and services from across our many brands, including Suncorp, AAMI, GIO Business and Apia, as well as solutions from our partner companies to make it easier for our customers to buy and protect their home or car, start a family, or start and grow a business. We’ve embraced new technologies and functions to help customers navigate complex financial decisions. For example, our Discovery Tool provides customers with a step-by-step guide to buying a home – from property inspections to conveyancing to electronic installation. Like every good concept store, ours also allows us to trial new concepts stylemagazines.com.au

WE’VE REIMAGINED THE TRADITIONAL BRANCH TO HELP OUR CUSTOMERS WITH THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER MOST

and solutions with our customers and make modifications based on their feedback. Of course, our people have been instrumental in creating this environment – giving our customers a personal experience in a relaxed environment. It’s certainly a space for experimentation, where our team members can try new things, do existing things differently and inspire, educate and delight our customers If you’re in the Carindale area, I encourage you to come in to meet the team and see this unique retail environment. We will be taking the best of these ideas and using them across our national network of stores. HAMPTONSTYLE LIVING Design a home that withstands changing trends and growing children. DESCRIBING HER DESIGN aesthetic as a “love affair with white and neutral tones” and “coastal and tropical luxe accents”, Chris Curro, of The White Bungalow, knows how to turn a home into an oasis for adults and children. Located in the revitalised suburb of Nundah, The White Bungalow feels like a resort overflowing with stunning homewares, plush linens and a boutique florist. Boasting an impressive 10,100 followers on Instagram (@thewhitebungalow_), The White Bungalow is beloved for its expert interior design advice. With kids of her own, Chris understands the challenges of designing a room for children: “My biggest tip is to really think about choosing design elements that can grow with them or be easily adapted to different styling ideas in the future,” she says.

Chris Curro

The in-store boutique florist is incredibly popular for its styling services and floral workshops, which serve as a fun afternoon of creativity for groups of friends. It’s already proving to be a huge year for Chris with the opening of her second store, White Havana, scheduled for June 22, and the launch of their online store later in the year to satisfy interstate fans. Chris describes the White Bungalow aesthetic as a more traditional Hamptons feel, whereas White Havana will distinguish itself by channelling a tropical-villa vibe and offering a larger selection

of furniture. To celebrate the opening of the new location, an Instagram competition will offer one lucky individual a stunning range of homewares valued at $2000. YOUR CHILD’S HEAD START We all love our children and only want what is best for them, so a good start to their education is vital. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT between birth and five years of age, children grow and develop faster than at any other stage of their lives. With so much brain development occurring and emotional connections forming, the foundation of their education is a critical part of their maturity. Goodstart Early Learning understands this, and has produced a quality early learning program to best assist children in the development of their social-emotional language and the thinking skills they need to develop. By combining structured and play-based learning experiences in a welcoming and engaging environment, children are better able to develop their skills and explore new concepts. By encouraging children to explore, discover, experience, and experiment in a fun and dynamic way, children are given the freedom and guidance they need to reach their potential. The new Adelaide Street facility (opening in the CBD-located ‘Broadway on Adelaide’ heritage building in mid-2017) has been designed with

unique and incredible interiors to better enhance the learning experience. The naturally inspired design features dedicated learning spaces for different ages and activities, as well as a private, rooftop, natural oasis. The facility offers an entirely new experience of play-based learning for children aged six weeks to five years.

FACILITY INCLUSIONS The facilities are expansive, including: • Herb and vegetable gardens with sandpit, water pumps and mud play. • A curriculum including sports classes, music lessons, languages, dance and more. • Secure access, including a safe drop off/ pick up basement with free parking. • Stunning atrium design with natural lighting and airflow. • Onsite chef catering for all dietary requirements.

“Sensory development is central to everything Goodstart Early Learning believes in. Children use their senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them.” stylemagazines.com.au

Senior occupational therapist for Goodstart Early Learning, Sally Fitzgerald, emphasises the importance of children exploring their world through sensory play. The central location allows parents who work in the CBD to place their children in a childcare facility that is closer to them, which gives them more time to spend with their child. Parents have access to a secure, free-of-charge carpark, as well as a unique parents retreat. The children have the opportunity to enjoy all the experiences of the local community, including field trips to Brisbane City Library, City Hall, museums and farmers markets. A Twilight Tour on Thursday June 15 from 5.30pm will allow parents to explore the sensory design elements of their child’s learning environment. A Kindergarten Program Information Session will be held on June 29 at 6pm. Goodstart Early Learning Adelaide Street opens on June 19. RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Dessert Queen Katherine Sabbath chats to Emmy-Lou McKean about all things cake, creativity and cooking. SYDNEY HIGH SCHOOL teacher turned cake creative Katherine Sabbath says she’s always been a sprinkle-covered, sticky-fingered bake-aholic. But it wasn’t until she started sharing photos of her brightly coloured life on Instagram in 2013 that her cakes and overall aesthetic attracted followers. Fast-forward to 2017, and Kat has a buttercream-covered spoon in every bowl. In between teaching hands-on workshops and collaborating with other creatives, Kat continues to experiment with flavours and ideas. Meanwhile, her creativity is inspiring boldness in other home bakers, one colourful Insta-post at a time. We caught up with Kat to find out her recipe for success. When it comes to baking and being creative, where do you find inspiration? Most of the time, I bake according to the flavours I feel like eating at the time. If I’m baking for a friend or a loved one, I try to incorporate all of their favourite sweet things as well as their personal aesthetic. I find that if you start from a delicious foundation, you’ll always end up with a cake that is well-received. When it comes to cake decorating, inspiration can come

from absolutely everywhere: from the confectionery aisle of my local supermarket to art, fashion and the beautiful natural environment around us. Your debut cookbook, Katherine Sabbath: Greatest Hits – The Pop Edition will be released in September. Have you always wanted to create a cookbook? Yes! As a teacher, I’ve always loved sharing my ideas and helping others, so writing a cookbook to support all of the lovely people in the home-baking community was a massive dream of mine.

Paper engineering is such an astounding and beautiful craft, but the art of pop-up books traditionally has been very simple. As soon as I came across the work of paper engineer Benja Harney (Paperform) five years ago, I knew I had to be a part of his world. A pop-up cookbook filled with exceptional paper engineering and vibrant cakes was a vision too good to forget. KATHERINESABBATH.COM

BREAKING UP IN THE AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IS WORSENED BY THE FACT

THE EX-FILES

THAT WE NEVER REALLY CUT TIES

Can we ever really be friends with an ex? Writes Siobhan Taylor. IF YOU’VE EVER seen the rom-com classic When Harry Met Sally, you will be familiar with Harry’s mantra that a man and a woman can never be “just friends”. I think we’ve all realised that this isn’t true (Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, obviously), but can the same be said for exes? Breaking up with an SO (significant other) in the 21st century is a minefield of uncertainty and false starts, worsened by the fact that in the age of social media, we never really cut ties. There’s the ex you follow on Spotify for banger music suggestions, the ex whose new girlfriend sends you a friend request, the ex who deletes all photos

of you from their social media feeds, and a dozen other variations. There was once a time, or so I am told, where if your ex lived in Sydney, you could avoid them by moving to Brisbane. That is no longer the case when we live in an age where our lives and relationships exist not just in reality but also online. All this begs the question: in the age of social media, is it possible to be friends with an ex? Well, maybe. One of my best mates just happens to be an ex. Following our (amicable? gentle? polite?) breakup, we cut ties completely. We both moved on to other relationships and a while later, after

both of those relationships fell apart, we crossed paths at a mutual friend’s birthday party and have been good friends ever since. I go to him when I feel I am lacking direction or feeling overwhelmed and we regularly catch up over Thai food. People are often sceptical when I tell them about our unconventional friendship, but it has never felt weird to me. It just works. With social media changing the way we date and breakup, there’s no rulebook to make the experience less daunting. All of this considered, it’s empowering to remember that we still call the shots, no matter what Harry Burns says.

SWIMMING FOR CHARITY Finance executive Cameron Noble is training for the swim of his life so he can improve the lives of others. UNDER THE KEEN eye of retired English Channel swimmer and record holder, Trent Grimsey, Brisbane finance executive Cameron Noble is training to follow in his mentor’s wake. Cameron is partnering with Youngcare, a charity he admires. He hopes his swim will raise $500,000 to build a home for young people with high-care needs at Wooloowin, in Brisbane’s north, which would allow them to exit aged care. “I feel a connection to Youngcare and believe in the important work they are doing,” Cameron says. “An aged-care facility is no place for a young person.” To the regular person, swimming 32km seems like a radical goal. But until 15 months ago, Cameron hadn’t even been to a pool for 30 years. Yet an intense training regimen has led him to

swim the 20km Rottnest Channel and the 25km Port-to-Pub (both off Western Australia), proving he is well on track for the UK challenge come August. Cameron knows that completing the swim will exhaust him physically and mentally, but he feels he is ready. “The difference between success and failure is simply a matter of breaking things down,” he says.

A CAUSE FOR APPLAUSE Brisbane CEOs are making a stand by going for a run. BRISBANE BOSSES WILL be lacing up their sneakers and squeezing into lycra in the next few months. The reason? To lead their teams on a 10km fun run to support those affected by domestic violence in south-east Queensland. Organised by accountant Maria Becis, this annual event bands together friends, family and colleagues to raise much-needed funds for services supporting victims of domestic violence. Style Magazines general manager, Paul Johnston, will run the course alongside 19 other Brisbane CEOs and their teams. “This is a great initiative to raise funds for RizeUp

Australia, Women’s Legal Service and the Run 2 Give Foundation,” Paul said. “Domestic violence is a huge problem in our society and one that affects a lot of us.” To contribute to the cause, Paul and Style Magazines are committed to having a team of 100 participants pound the pavement for charity. To get in shape, the runners will engage the services of world champion kickboxer Ian Jacobs to lead them in a series of bootcamps before the event in October.

As well as training, social fundraisers will be hosted regularly to raise funds for and awareness of domestic violence. The fun run will be held at the new Stockland development on Brookbent Road, Pallara, at 4.30pm on October 7, 2017. If you’d like to get fit for a good cause, join the Style Magazines team (or get behind another CEO) by registering online today. OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Track pants have joined the likes of bomber jackets and sneakers for athletic-inspired street style. WHEN TRACK PANTS returned to the scene with design throwbacks from leading sportswear brands, those of us who value comfort breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, something both comfortable and cool. TRACK PANTS HAVE come a long way since the first Adidas pair back in 1967 (and since the velour iterations of the early 2000s – never again). WITH ADIDAS, FILA, and Vetements giving us heavy doses of ’90s nostalgia, high-end brands like Dion Lee, Les Copains, and Byblos have featured their own takes on the streetwear staple in their Fall 2017 collections. THE 2017 INTERPRETATION takes a departure from fitted ankles and heavy fabrics in favour of straight-legged and slightly baggy fits. 26

Whether you’re after chic streetstyle or ultra-cool casual, track pants could be the versatile staple you’re missing in your wardrobe. For a smart, chic look, experiment with counterbalancing the casual fit of the pants with a more structured top half. Leather, wool knits and cropped blazers help keep the look polished, while simple heels and luxe fabrics can help offset any gym vibes. For a look that is effortlessly cool (and definitely not Sporty Spice) try experimenting with skate shoes and slides, embrace a bold colour palette, and play with silhouettes and shapes. For something a little less bulky, accentuate your waist by half-tucking your blouse or sweater. Instant cool factor.

INSPIRED BY THE writing of Virginia Woolf, this month Queensland Performing Arts Centre is bringing The Royal Ballet’s Olivier Award winning production, Woolf Works, exclusively to Brisbane. From June 29, the stage of the Lyric Theatre will see the three-act production bravely take elements from Woolf’s novels, letters, and diaries to a new dimension. Influenced by the way Choreographer Wayne McGregor artistically draws out emotion through performance, we delved into a hypnotic world of edgy monochrome textures, raw fabrics and contemporary silhouettes highlighted with on-trend translucency. By pushing the boundaries of modern storytelling, we developed a new interpretation of traditional winter fashion. See the theatrical masterpiece of Woolf Works come alive on our pages as we tap into this uniquely thoughtful and ambitious production.

CAUGHT YOU LOOKING Fashionable eyewear means wearing glasses is no longer a hassle. ONCE SEEN SOLELY as the domain of bookish types, wearing glasses is now a fashion statement in its own right. Beautiful frames are seen as the ultimate luxe accessory, and it’s not hard to understand why. Even those with 20/20 vision are jumping on the trend. It’s a little-reported fact that some eagle-eyed fashion insiders wear frames with clear lenses. Founded at Bondi Beach in 2012, Bailey Nelson occupies a glamorous corner of the eyewear market. Their handmade frames are designed in Australia, with a range that covers the optical, sun, and clip-on varieties. For those looking to make a subtle impact with their eyewear choice, the acetate frames are the perfect pick for low-key vision correction. At Bailey Nelson Fortitude Valley, an in-house optometrist is available for stress-free consultations. A thorough eye examination and updated prescription are key to you rediscovering the joys of sharp vision. Polarised, anti-glare or anti-scratch lenses come as standard and each pair of frames carries a oneyear warranty. For those too busy to shop instore, Bailey Nelson will happily cover the cost of express post for your new frames. EYES REVITALISED Banish those dry eyes with a revolutionary treatment available at Madonna Rigney Optometry. MILLIONS IN AUSTRALIA have tired, gritty, sore or red eyes. Madonna Rigney Optometry has a Dry Eyes Clinic dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of dry eyes, blepharitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction, conditions that often co-exist. People affected by dry eyes have a problem with their tears. Either they are not producing enough tears or their tears are of poor quality and rapidly evaporate. We offer full assessment, diagnosis and treatment for dry eyes with technology called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) that changes lives. IPL stimulates the Meibomian glands to create a healthier and thicker oil layer for the tears. This leads to a significant reduction in dryness and an improvement in redness and vision. The treatment is painless and no needles or injections are required. Five gentle applications of the laser are applied to each lower eyelid. The effect of the IPL treatment is cumulative and maximal results will be achieved once you have completed your four-session treatment plan. Talk to us about your eye condition. We will work with you to keep your eyes moisturised, comfortable and healthy. MADONNA RIGNEY OPTOMETRY 3/17 LYTTON RD, EAST BRISBANE P 3844 4648 MADONNARIGNEYOPTOMETRY.COM.AU

‘LESS IS MORE’ SETS THE SCENE

LEARNING BY DESIGN

ILLUMINATED THINKING

STYLING AN EVENT need not cost more than the event itself. In fact, the age-old adage of “less is more” is prominent in the style world. If budget or space is holding you back, don’t let it constrain your creativity. Instead, focus on key styling elements to set the scene. A statement entrance or strategically placed installation can bring an event space together. Select a colour palette and use it en masse. Think floor-length navy satin tablecloths or the use of uplighting in a chosen shade. Why not add a commanding centerpiece: a cluster of single-colour blooms or leaves are often more cost-effective than complex floral arrangements. Though using a stylist may seem like an extravagant initial outlay, they’re experts in achieving the desired look within a budget – which nearly always works out to be more costeffective in the long run. They also have a great network of contacts and a whole raft of costsaving tips at their disposal. The experts will ensure your next event is on-trend, on-budget and truly memorable.

WHEN WE CONSIDER a child’s learning, we often think of the activities, experiences and interactions children have with teachers and friends as critical influences for their education – and they are. But the play environment is also a critical element of the educational experience. Classrooms have come a long way. These days they are designed to stimulate curiosity, with opportunities to test children’s skills and knowledge of the world around them. In early childhood education, the environment is said to act as “the third teacher”. Children are competent learners, especially when given hands-on tasks. Playgrounds and classrooms should be designed to trigger inquiry and independence, support exploration and allow children to connect with natural elements. Presented with the right amount of challenge and risk, young children can “stretch their wings and learn to fly”. Goodstart’s new centre in Adelaide Street, Brisbane City, is the culmination of a year’s planning. Come in for a visit. We think you’ll like what you see.

LIGHTING HAS BECOME the distinguishing factor between good and great design. The fundamental elements to consider are task lighting, mood lighting and directional lighting. Task lighting is most relevant when planning the primary preparation zones of a space. We look at the light’s intensity and consider which colour to use based on the activities that will occur in the zone. Bright white lighting is often used over kitchen benchtops, for example. LED lighting – either in strips or as clustered downlighting – is most popular for this application in the kitchen. The key is consistency, meaning no dark spots. Mood lighting is generally softer and more diffused, often with a dimmer function. This lighting can be positioned low under benches or under kickboard height, so it is hidden from view when turned off. Directional lighting can be used to focus on points of interest, for example in display cabinets. It can also be used to highlight areas that would otherwise be in shadow.

A GROUNDING IN FINE COFFEE

TABLES FOR ALL OCCASIONS

DO SHOES MATTER?

FOR YEARS, COFFEE enthusiasts have been urging restaurateurs to step it up when it comes to specialty coffee. The entrees might be exceptional, the mains mouth-watering and the desserts delectable, but when the night ends with a substandard coffee, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Now, with the spotlight shining on specialty coffee, customers are looking at the whole process. Restaurateurs have an obligation at the end of the line to make a good cup of coffee. At Wolff Coffee Roasters, we are delighted to have partnered with award-winning fine-dining restaurants that clearly value coffee prepared and crafted to the same meticulous standards as the delicious chef-prepared courses before it. Gerard’s Bistro and The Apo, both in Fortitude Valley, and Aquitaine Brasserie, Putia Pure Foods and The Wooden Horse, in Clayfield, all serve our specialty coffee. Why not make your next fine-dining experience consistently delicious and memorable from go to whoa?

2 MAD SISTERS is excited to announce we have become an Australian distributor for Heart Ethical, New Zealand’s premier maker of handdyed and screen-printed fabrics and table linen. To celebrate we thought, we’d talk about styling for a dinner party. Here are three simple rules to help you style your next table and make that special occasion even more spectacular. • Colour and food co-ordination: If you are cooking up a Moroccan feast, think of the gorgeous colours of Morocco and style accordingly, or if you are cooking a seafood feast, think of the beach or ocean. • You don’t have to eat in the dining room. If the weather is warm, think about moving outside to enjoy the twilight. • Lighting is everything. Soft mood lighting created with lamps and candles is better than harsh overhead lights. Above all, keep it simple and don’t overdo the flowers and candles. People need room to eat and to see each other over the table decorations. Most importantly, have fun.

IN THE MANY presentations I have done over the years, I have asked the women in the audience this question: Do you look at a man’s shoes before his face? About half say yes, so what does this mean? Shoes make an impression. How your shoes are kept helps women decide your calibre. If your shoes are unpolished, scuffed and generally uncared for, maybe that is how you will treat her. That is the feedback I have received. To ensure you send the right message, here some tips: • polish heels as well as toes; • shoe polish will hide scuffs; • polish at least weekly. If you can’t be bothered, get it done professionally. Buffed is a great choice; • if you find you kick things, buy shoes with a ranting (a rail at the side); and • rotate your shoes, giving them 24 hours’ rest between wears. Please let me know if you have any questions as we sell handmade shoes in store.

FOOD+DRINK Spaghetti alle Vongole: Baby clams, white wine, tomatoes, lemon and parsley Vitello Tonnato: Rare seared veal, tuna mayonnaise, fried capers and manzanillo olives

Insalata Caprese: Noosa red tomato and burrata, basil and olive oil

TASTE OF TUSCANY Nativo Kitchen and Bar brings classic, regional Italian fare to Petrie Terrace, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. SET IN THE vibrant, buzzing backdrop to Petrie Terrace, Nativo Kitchen and Wine Bar is the newest venture from the NKB Group (the brains behind Nickel Kitchen & Bar and NKB Express). In the space at The Barracks once occupied by French Twist, Nativo Kitchen and Wine Bar whisks diners to the cobbled streets of Tuscany with its exposed brick structure and genuine, stripped-back flavours.

Rigatoni al Guanciale: Slow-braised pork cheek, fennel, chilli and tomato

Head chef Chris Sells is at the helm in Nativo’s Kitchen, offering everything from wholesome meals to casual aperitifs and on-the-go Italian treats. Perusing the lunch and dinner menu, it soon becomes clear that each dish features some of Italy’s finest flavours, and we are in for the full dining experience. Often when I read a menu, one dish will stand out to me, but in this case I struggled to decide as I wanted to try one of everything. My friend and I agreed to choose two starters and two mains to share. After a strong recommendation from the waitress, we decided on the Insalata Caprese and the Vitello Tonnato. Our starters were placed in front of us and they were beyond what you’d imagine authentic Italian fare to look like. Every ingredient was not

For a truly authentic Italian dining experience, you can’t go past the slow-braised pork-cheek pasta accompanied by a glass of Chianti. 40

only delicately arranged on the plate for its taste, but also to create an intricately detailed work of food art. We knew our mains were on the way as we could smell them before they even hit our table. At first taste, I had already decided that the Spaghetti alle Vongole with baby clams, white wine, tomatoes, lemon and parsley was going to be my favourite dish. The sauce was rich but perfectly balanced with the freshness of the baby clams. Midway through eating our dishes, we made the swap, and my reluctance to pass over the vongole quickly turned into happiness after the first taste of the Rigatoni al Guanciale with slow-braised pork cheek, fennel, chilli and tomato. In true Italian style, the thinking behind Nativo Kitchen and Bar evidently is that hunger is never an option. That much was obvious from the generous size of their dishes. Stepping away from Petrie Terrace’s contemporary bar-food scene has never tasted so good. NATIVO KITCHEN & WINE BAR 61 PETRIE TERRACE, PADDINGTON NATIVOKITCHENANDBAR.COM.AU

Fragile whimsy is the mood this season, writes celebrity hairdressers and make-up artists Christian Alexander and Dale Dorning.

“ Tips to making undone, look put together”

THE UNDONE IMPERFECT LOOK Working with the hair’s texture, using products designed to hydrate and hold, is the key to creating effortlessly tousled, undone hair. David Mallett Australian Salt Spray blow-dried into the hair’s roots and mid-lengths gives a “positive charge”. Gently use your fingertips to apply a protective serum before heat styling to prevent fly-away strands. MAC face and body is a great starting point for translucent skin. BEAUTY WITH YOUR BESTIES

These 3 lovelies have had their beauty treatments at Brookly n Beauty Bar at The Barracks and are set for a fun night.

Ladies, it is time to treat yo’ self and yo’ friends at Brooklyn Beauty Bar. YOU PROBABLY ALREADY know by now about our fun mani and pedi parties for up to eight people, but due to popular demand we are now offering Beauty Parties. The idea came from timepoor lovelies who wanted to catch up with their girlfriends but also needed lashes or brows done, a spot of waxing or a pick-me-up with a facial. Of course, if you want a bit of quiet “me” time we have single treatment rooms but our double and triple bed treatment rooms are perfect for a bit of multi-tasking with your gal pals. I mean, there is nothing quite so bonding as a spot of waxing between girlfriends! And what better way to wile away time getting your lashes

extended or lifted or your brows shaped than with your bestie and a good girlie gossip. You’ll want a drink after all that, so it’s just as well we have a bar and during or after your treatments we’ll bring you a G&T, wine or one of our special beauty party cocktails. Brooklyn Beauty Parties start at $50 a person, but prices vary depending on the type of treatments you’d like. LUXURY SKINCARE What is it about luxury skincare that tempts so many of us to empty our pockets? PAYING $100 FOR a small tub of face cream may seem extreme for some, but for others it is a necessary price. It’s certainly true that the price of skincare products varies greatly, but why? Most simply, skincare products target two consumer types: those who will make do and those who demand the best. There’s no case to be made that luxury products are life-or-death necessities, but some of them may actually be worth your precious pennies. Being aware of your skin type is the first step when considering taking the plunge. For some skins, plant extracts are dangerous, thick creams are a risk, and perfumed products are a definite no. Those types should lean towards brands like Drunk Elephant (C-Firma Day Serum, $116), Sunday Riley (Good Genes Acid Treatment, $154), Chanel (Blue Serum, $155) and Aesop (Elemental Facial Barrier Cream, $60) to arm their skin against a busy lifestyle, regular makeup use, and hormonal breakouts. Taking advantage of free samples helps stylemagazines.com.au

before committing to a purchase. And speaking to a dermatologist is a good way to make sure you’re caring for your skin in a way that will keep it healthy. And maybe it’s a coincidence, but almost all the better products have a bit of a price-tag. It’s also possible that good marketing and online hype help create that impression. Regardless of how you feel about luxury skincare, we can all agree on one thing: there’s nothing like a soothing face mask to lift your mood.

IS HAVING KIDS TOO VEIN?

PUT A SHINE ON YOUR SMILE

GREAT BROWS AN ARTFORM

WOMEN’S BODIES GO through so many changes during pregnancy, it can be difficult to recognise which are regular changes and which should be discussed with a specialist. Supporting healthy growth for your baby puts pressure on blood vessels to produce and transport extra blood. Even normal weight gain during pregnancy can put strain on the body, as does long periods of standing or sitting. All of these situations can cause veins to become more visible than normal. Women should remember to keep active and healthy in order to keep their blood vessels functioning as well as possible. Compression therapy (socks, stockings, leggings) can be beneficial, and we are able to recommend the correct style and size for ultimate comfort. If you experience pain or have a family history of varicose veins, or if six months after giving birth, your legs have not returned to normal, it is recommended you speak with a specialist who can advise on recommended treatment options post-birth and before another pregnancy.

IN THE EARLY 1800s, a dental material called amalgam was created which allowed decayed teeth to be filled instead of extracted. It consisted of silver, tin, copper and up to 50 per cent mercury. This was a huge advance at the time, but nearly 200 years later, dental materials have come a long way, yet many people still have amalgams in their mouth. Today more aesthetic fillings and crowns can provide a more confident smile. Everything has its pros and cons. Amalgam is less expensive and it tends to last a long time. On the other hand, it turns teeth grey, contains mercury and can expand and crack a tooth, necessitating a more costly crown. Tooth-coloured bonded-composite fillings are more expensive and more suited tow small and medium fillings. But they bond the tooth together strongly, maximising the amount of healthy tooth that remains. At James Street Dentists, we welcome patients who would like their old fillings assessed. 200 years is a long time.

GREAT BROWS ARE not reserved for the chosen few. Great brows are for those who have chosen great brow artists. Even the most beautiful women in the world have “lag lines”, the name The Brow Bar has given to the natural downward angles of a human face. But they also have “lift lines”, a trademarked term The Brow Bar uses to explain the natural uplift angles of a face. The whole philosophy behind The Brow Bar’s Brow Lift Shaping and why we do what we do is based around why and how we worship our natural lift-lines. These angles honour the lift-lines of our faces. Our brow lift-shaping techniques are based on the enhancement of your natural lift-lines which is what we truly believe enhances every individual’s brows. Our Arch Angels will coach you on how to use our facelift makeup to flatter your lift-lines, which will make you appear more youthful and vibrant.

MIGRAINE THERAPY

MAKING BABIES

SOS: SAVE OUR SKIN

AS PER TGA guidelines, we are not permitted to mention the name of the product discussed in this column. Injection therapy has been established as a safe and effective treatment for chronic migraine. It should be considered in patients who are more than 18 years of age and who are not pregnant, breastfeeding or planning for a pregnancy in the next three months. Therapy should also be considered if at least three preventative prescribed medications have resulted in limiting side effects or have been unable to provide significant benefits. Injection therapy is believed to block the transmission of pain signals between the head, neck and brain. It is not a cure for migraines, but it is an effective treatment option for many patients. When it works for chronic migraine, the results can be dramatic, both in reducing headache days and improving a patient’s quality of life. Visit our website or call our rooms to speak to a staff member about treatments.

WOMEN OFTEN ASK me how they might know if they couldn’t make a baby? To conceive, a woman needs three physical attributes: regular ovulation, open fallopian tubes and a healthy pelvic environment. When the menstrual cycle is irregular and falls outside the normal 25 to 35-day length, there is an increased chance that an egg is not being released each time. Women with a history of pelvic infection have an increased risk of tubal blockage. Painful or heavy periods, particularly if coupled with painful intercourse or ovulation, may be an indication of endometriosis or fibroids, which are common causes of infertility. The most important factor that determines a women’s fertility is her age – the older she is, the harder it is to get pregnant. But women do not shoulder all the blame. Up to 90 per cent of all infertility issues can be attributed to the male partner. So if you are over 35 years of age and are not pregnant, after 6 months of trying, it’s time to contact Eve Health for some help.

WITH COOLER WEATHER, loss of humidity, 9-hour days in the office, and warmer showers, many of us will be experiencing dryer skin than usual. As our skin is stripped of its natural oils, it’s important to safeguard your skin by keeping hydrated and moisturised. A good moisturiser is one that hydrates the skin over a period of time without clogging your skin. Applying moisturiser first thing in the morning and immediately after a shower is the first step of ensuring your skin stays hydrated and supple throughout winter. Using a soap-free cleanser can also prevent your skin from being stripped of too many natural oils, and getting dry or irritated. As always, healthy diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables ensures that the skin has the essential vitamins and nutrients for good health. Pairing this with high water intake ensures your skin stays hydrated and appears plumper and less wrinkled. If you find you are experiencing extended periods of dry and irritated skin, it may be time to schedule a dermatological review, as there may be underlying causes.

The result is more than the sum of its parts, writes Siobhan Taylor. THE JARRING IMAGES in a Madbutt collage are designed to provoke a response in the viewer. So when I saw the Brisbane artist’s work recently and began to feel empowered, whimsical and curious all at once, at least I knew it wasn’t just me. Madbutt’s work often has an underlying theme of female empowerment. She says she likes to encourage “respect and love for one another and, most of all, the earth”. In one piece, warzone images are juxtaposed with Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, challenging the viewer’s stand on human rights issues. 54

“I like to use my social media and exhibitions as a platform to highlight the turmoil that I believe can be resolved,” she says. Singer Lana Del Rey recently posted a Madbutt collage on her Instagram page, instantly boosting the artist’s international reputation. Closer to home, her work will feature in the exhibition Art of War – Against Domestic Violence at The Loft, West End, on August 5. Proceeds will

go to the charity Friends with Dignity Australia. “I would love for there to be a wider understanding that collage is not just something you do in kindergarten,” Madbutt says, “but a style of art that is reusing and recycling materials to sometimes highlight a larger idea and concept.” READ MORE ONLINE

TRAVEL

“The blend of influences from different cultures gives prints and textiles a different look“ - Natasha

READY, JET, GO! SUMMER LOVING HAD ME A BLAST

Annabelle Beirne chats to the jet-setting Australian team behind JETS Swimwear about the travel destinations that have influenced their designs. LIFE SHOULD BE about chasing that endless summer. Travel and immersing yourself in cultures that are foreign to you is incredibly inspiring. The designs of fashion collections across the globe are based on innovative trains of thought. We asked the JETS design team which cities have inspired them and how the style of their swimwear range aligns with their favourite travel destinations. What is your favourite summer travel destination? BRENDA: Cuba. It is such a vibrant and inspiring place. I love it for its uniqueness, creativity and spirit. It’s a sensory delight of art, history and nightlife with grand colonial facades, hip restaurants and salsa dancing complemented with white, powdery beaches. MARTINE: Any small town on the Italian coast. I love the raw coastline, small coastal towns, the food, the culture and the people. YI: Zanzibar! The islands off East Africa are rich in culture, with a vibrant art scene, delicious food and luxurious resorts with the free-spirited slow pace of island life. NATASHA: One of my favourite summer destinations is the Amalfi Coast in Italy because of the picturesque coastline around Amalfi and Positano, the surrounding lemon groves and pergolas, the steep winding roads to stylemagazines.com.au

the hilltops of Ravello, the delicious food and coffee and so much more. JORDAN: Cannes on the French Riviera. The French Riviera is known for its glamour and beauty and provides the perfect mix of rich heritage and majestic coastline. How has your destination influenced your designs? BRENDA: Music has always made me feel inspired, so this combined with the melting pot of Cuban clichés – the colours of colonial grandeur, classic cars and cocktails – never fails to inspire me. MARTINE: Most influence comes from the timeless classic feel of the Italian coast. YI: Zanzibar’s unchanged picturesque little towns offer timeless beauty and a relaxed undiscovered holiday vibe. NATASHA: There is a breathtaking beauty and lush colourful landscapes everywhere you go on the Amalfi Coast. Also the vibrant colours of the local hand-crafted ceramics, myriad historical and art heritage details ... there is so much to draw inspiration from. JORDAN: Cannes is the perfect apogee of class and style. Our Classique collection is timeless, sleek and very sophisticated, much like the French Riviera.

WARNING: WANDERLUST AHEAD PINTEREST AND AIRBNB have paired up to investigate where adventurers and daydreamers are planning to travel next. And honestly, the top trending travel destinations might surprise you. The social-media and home-sharing platforms collaborated to analyse which destinations were piquing our curiosity. No prizes for guessing whether or not New York City made the list, but we were definitely surprised by some of the other destinations that trended highly. We shouldn’t really be shocked but it was definitely an insight. At the very least, it’s got us thinking! READ MORE ONLINE

WINTER e s c a p e s

LET IT SNOW This is the winter holiday you’ve longed for, writes Sarah Taviani. Our winters may not include snow-covered castles but an overseas holiday in the off-season can become something magical if you know where to look. TALLINN, ESTONIA By about mid-November, snow transforms Tallinn into a serene medieval wonderland. Try to catch the sunrise at least once. Every morning, the Estonian national anthem plays as the flag is raised over Tall Hermann.

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC Prague is always beautiful, but the breathtaking architecture seems to call out for a layer of snow. Ice-skating rinks beckon and the legendary Christmas markets draw you in instantly.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA Anyone who even remotely likes winter has probably visited (or is planning to visit) Banff at some point. And almost every one of them has a photo with Moraine Lake. The scenery is so beloved, it’s immortalised on the Canadian $20 note.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, USA Yosemite is where I first saw snow. Sure, it was days old and melting, but there was still a sense of utter peace in the air. The Yosemite Falls may not appear in all their usual glory, but it’s not unusual to see them flowing.

ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER, GERMANY Germany is renowned for its Christmas markets, but one of the prettiest would have to be in Rothenburg. This is mostly due to the wellpreserved medieval architecture, which is a fancy way of saying it looks like you’re wandering through every fairytale village you’ve ever imagined.
