Q: If you owned a race horse, what would you name it? MANAGEMENT

ON TREND: BEAUTIFUL MODERN CLASSIC SILHOUETTES AND SOFT TAILORING FOR A TOTAL SENSE OF EASE!

TO THE GREAT frustration of many of Style staff, I like to wait until the entire issue is paginated in “the bible” before I write my editor’s letter. Seeing and reading the issue the way you will experience it as a reader often gives me a fresh perspective. I hope you enjoy the changes we are introducing; after all, it is my job to make each issue come together in a different and even more exciting manner than the last. The prestigious and awe-inspiring racing season has taken hold of all our indulgent fantasies and made even the most sinful things seem angelic. With the #sevensins about to trot into action in Brisbane, I could not be more excited to share the secrets of the Brisbane Racing Carnival on our pages with ambassador Liz Cantor. Elsewhere in this issue, we profile some extraordinary Rio Games hopefuls and delve into Sportscraft’s patriotic uniform creation for the Australian team. We also chat to fashion talents Pip Edwards and Michael Lo Sordo, and showcase a few of our local loves, from delicious food to décor desires. It’s a privilege to publish a glossy magazine in Brisbane, and to have the ongoing support of advertisers, retailers and, of course, readers. From all of us here at Style, thank you for looking to us as your prestigious guide to Brisbane’s best. Join us for one hell of a ride.

Happy reading!

THE

POWER OF MANY

From providing home-cooked meals to sanitary items and friendly conversation, these are the people extending a helping hand to Brisbane’s homeless, writes Hannah Doody.

14

IT’S A SITUATION that around one in 230 people across the country find themselves in: sleeping on the street, couch surfing, living rough, or taking refuge in a homeless hostel. No one plans this life for themselves; nor do they plan the complex range of issues that can lead them to this point. In 2013, homelessness was up 5.21 per cent from 2006, with nearly 20,000 people experiencing homelessness in Queensland according to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. These are the most recent statistics available, and if you think these numbers are astounding, with increasing costs of living and a rapidly booming population, it’s likely that the number of people experiencing homelessness is continuing to rise. In the midst of this, some special people in Brisbane are taking matters into their own hands to help out those less fortunate in any way they can. A year ago, when personal trainer Rochelle Courtenay heard that homeless women were making sanitary items out of anything they could get their hands on – from public toilet paper to newspapers and magazines – because they couldn’t afford to buy them, she knew she had to do something. Rochelle founded Share the Dignity, an organisation that supplies frontline workers with tampons and sanitary pads to deliver to the homeless women and domestic violence survivors of Australia. “I was saddened that many women had to choose between feeding their children and sanitary items, or that some girls living in poverty stay home from school during their period as their family can’t afford them,” says Rochelle. “The realisation that many women in our lucky country have to suffer this indignity was utterly shocking to me.” Starting as a small local movement in Sandgate, Share the Dignity gained momentum as support agencies such as shelters and refuges became aware of their cause – and it wasn’t long before MAY16

Nearly

20,000

ROCHELLE COURTENAY, FOUNDER OF SHARE THE DIGNITY

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS IN QUEENSLAND IN 2013. requests started coming through thick and fast from all over the country. Today, Share the Dignity provides 700 frontline services with a plethora of pads and tampons, and aimed to collect more than 500,000 sanitary items from more than 1000 points around Australia in April. “This is an issue all women face month in and month out, there is no end to the need for sanitary products,” says Rochelle. “We couldn’t not grow. We couldn’t turn our backs on the ladies in Darwin, remote communities, or capital cities across the country just because it wasn’t convenient or we weren’t equipped in the beginning to service such a huge demand.” Rochelle goes on to say, “Initially, our volunteers served as collection points from their own homes, and we now have businesses all across Australia who kindly offer a corner of their business space for our beautiful pink and white collection bins.” Rochelle understands that the work of Share the Dignity is “only a bandaid solution to a very big, complex web of issues that need to be addressed” involving affordable accommodation, more emergency accommodation, and awareness of the 1800RESPECT hotline to help women escape domestic violence. As such, a large focus of Rochelle’s work is centred on raising awareness around these issues, as well as campaigning to have the tampon tax dropped. Meanwhile, all around Brisbane, volunteers are rising early and working into the night to give blankets and home-cooked meals to the homeless through Eddie’s Van – a school initiative started by Edmund Rice Foundation CEO and ex-high school teacher Anthony Ryan in 1998. Boys in private school blazers are up at 4.30am to tend a food van, after which they trudge back to school, tired and reflective, to discuss what they have learned. For some, it’s just a break from routine, a slightly risky adventure into another life. For others, like Rohan Gallagher, it was pivotal. stylemagazines.com.au

Now 25 and a commercial finance analyst at a communications and electronics company, Rohan continues to volunteer at Eddie’s Van, coordinating the van on Tuesday evenings. Rohan explains that he feels more passionately about giving his time and energy at a time in his life when he doesn’t have a lot of money. Hot meals are provided, but Rohan says the real sustenance is the warm company and conversation. “Eddie’s Van doesn’t necessarily solve the homeless problem,” says Rohan. “Many of the patrons are homeless for reasons that we can’t solve, such as drug addiction and mental illness. To me, the great thing is that we can ease the burden of a life below the line by sharing our stories and listening to theirs.” Rohan tells a story of a man who frequents the van regularly. Always extremely agitated, the man is believed to have a mental condition such as severe paranoid schizophrenia. This particular time, he was unusually on edge. Something had obviously happened to “set him off” – he’d had a bad night and was aggressive towards a couple of the volunteers. One of the team members, Jim, started talking to him over some food, and soon the man calmed right down and started joking around – “He was actually enjoying himself!” Later, Jim explained to Rohan that he could see a part of himself in the man, and if Jim didn’t have the health and opportunities he had in his life, he could see himself in the same situation. For Rohan, that was a true Eddie’s Van experience. 15

WELCOME TO SURGE

AM

Style caught up with national award-winning creative agency Surge Media to experience a day in the life of this evolving web and video production house.

LUNCH

They joke that their days begin with soulful renditions of Kumbaya.. coffee is what really gets this creative bunch going.

PM

8AM: Walk through the doors of Surge Media and you’ll no doubt be greeted by a flurry of activity. Due to the studio’s location (inside a converted church) clients often comment if they have to make a confession or pray. Despite its religious exterior this building provides one of the best collaborative creative hubs in Brisbane. 9AM: Over in the web department, the team unapologetically flings around terms such as “SEO”, “e-commerce” and “headless architecture”. Graphic designer and prized Italian import Alessandro is perfecting the final touches on his latest digital design. And it’s just a typical day for the video production team, with castings, scriptwriting, organising props and planning future shoots all on the agenda. 10.30AM: It’s team meeting time. While their day began with wheatgrass shots and soulful renditions of Kumbaya, coffee mixed with originality is what really gets this creative bunch going. 12PM: Surge Media likes to do things differently, and the local Vietnamese street food favourite is only a few pedals away. That’s right – they collect their lunch on a bright green branded pushbike. It’s an environmentallyconscious marketing investment that encourages physical activity. Genius. 1PM: The team takes some time to check and update their various online platforms. They’re keen to engage with their audience and maintain a strong social media presence – it’s a full-time job here! The team consistently produces blog posts relevant to the industry and Brisbane community. One of their most recent posts focuses on the lack of boundary-pushing murals in Brisbane and how that impacts our visual landscape. 3PM: At other workplaces, most people would be exhausted by a long and busy day. Many would be rushing out for a sugar-filled snack to fuel their last few hours of work. Surge Media’s creative director, Ben Trowse, calls for an impromptu ping-pong match to pep things up. No one seems surprised by Ben’s energetic offer; in the blink of an eye, web developers Alex and Hector are battling it out. It’s an image in stark contrast with society’s preconceived notions about geeky computer guys, but that’s Surge Media for you. They do things differently. GAME ON! With the Rio Games just a few months away, our Aussie athletes are hard at work, writes Sarah Taviani. AS THE OPENING Ceremony draws ever closer, Australia’s representatives are feverishly preparing for their team or individual sports. And they all have one thing in common: they want to win a gold medal at the Games. It’s in our blood to barrack for those who don the green and gold but so often we don’t actually know the people representing our country. Here’s your chance to learn all about some of the athletes you’ll be cheering for come August. Rhys Howden, captain of the Aussie Sharks men’s water polo team, has been to the Games twice before – Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. “Each time has been so different and I know Rio will be too,” says Rhys. “I feel this time around I have a lot more experience and the key is to accept the things I can’t control. You can’t worry about everything all the time.” Danielle Prince is no stranger to high-pressure environments: she is the only rhythmic gymnast in history to have represented Australia at six World Championships, and she competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2014. On being chosen for the Rio Games, Danielle says, “Words can’t describe how happy I was when I found out. There is a lot of hard work to 20

be done between now and August but I am soaking up the whole experience as these Games will be my first and last.” Bronwen Knox helped Australia win the bronze medal for women’s water polo in 2008 and 2012. Her 12 goals earned her the title of third leading scorer in the tournament. “Putting on the green and gold and having an entire nation supporting you is amazing,” says Bronwen. “While [water polo] may not be the most popular sport, during the Games the support from home comes in tidal waves.” While Bronwen would love to stand on the podium with a gold medal around her neck, she knows that Rio could possibly be her last appearance at the Games. “My greatest hope would be that I finish the Games off with absolutely no regrets,” Bronwen says. “That I leave absolutely everything I can in the water and walk away knowing I’ve played the best polo I’m capable of.” What’s their advice for hopeful young athletes? “What you put in is what you get out. If you want to achieve greatness, you have to work hard at it,” says Rhys. “The only thing that matters is that you pick

Simone Weigall

Experimenting with painting on the pages of Vogue, Jess Cochrane’s artistic style combines portrait photography and expressionism. THIS MONTH, THE Brisbane Powerhouse will host Jess Cochrane’s first solo exhibition, FearLess. Style spent some time with Jess to explore the intricacies of the colourful world of her work. What techniques do you use in creating your art? My favourite technique has been producing large, gestural paint marks with a scrubbing brush and a broom from Bunnings. How did you come up with the name for your “FearLess” exhibition? The play on words acts as a reminder to live without the fear of judgement and fully embrace yourself rather than worrying about fitting into a mould. Diversity and flaws are good. Are there any thoughts or feelings that you want to provoke through your paintings? The artworks are designed to shed light on the effects that advertising, consumerism, popular culture and art history have had on the mental state of today’s society. My work is a visual response to my personal experience with that feeling. This response allows my audience to question beauty while simultaneously stylemagazines.com.au

presenting an opportunity to change the conversation. Where do you draw your inspiration from? My friends and the people I meet. People are so incredible and I find the character of individuals to be a very fascinating thing.

Ben and Nick, Ben’s Burgers.

CREATORS OF COMMUNITY UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN living under a rock for the last few years, it’s likely you’ve shopped or eaten at, or at least heard of the many businesses run by Ben and Nick Chiu. The two brothers, aged 28 and 32 respectively, are Brisbane-born and raised. It all started 10 years ago, when Nick returned from an overseas trip with the inspiration to create a tiny streetwear boutique called Apartment. “A six-month stint in New York during university was enough time for the streetwear bug to bite,” says Ben. “I was only 18; we’d both been working in retail and knew it was the next move for us.” The boys are constantly inspired by their travels and by the people around them.

“Our circle is full of inspiring individuals and movements that span food, music, art and fashion,” says Nick. Being immersed in such multifaceted creativity, the boys were compelled to begin hosting music pop-up parties under A Love Supreme in 2012. Not long after, they tried their hands at hospitality. “Ben’s Burgers was something that was cooking for a while,” says Nick. “With the store and the music events, we felt the only thing missing was a local hang to just chill out.” Their most recent venture, The Bleachers in West End, is an extension of the Ben’s Burgers concept but in an “even bigger space in an area that already has a great sense of community.”

PHOTOGRAPH: STANDING BY

From Apartment to A Love Supreme, Ben’s Burgers and The Bleachers, these two young entrepreneurs are fostering a unique scene in Brisbane, writes Hannah Doody.

Here you’ll find American-style burgers, fried chicken, local beers and soft serve ice-cream. But Nick says it’s not just about creating trendy, successful venues: it’s the people they meet along the way that make it most gratifying. “When someone comes through and really feels the same, like it’s made their quality of life better, even just for a moment – that’s the best.” READ MORE ONLINE THEBLEACHERS.CO BENSBURGERS.COM.AU APTMNT.MYSHOPIFY.COM ALOVESUPREME.CO

Fred Fowler x Gorman

A DATE WITH NATURE This fashion collaboration is wearable art at its best, writes Leith Wilson. CUTTING-EDGE MELBOURNE LABEL Gorman has teamed up with Australian-born visual artist Fred Fowler to create a collection that can only be described as breathtaking. The Geology collection, boasting playful prints in flattering cuts and styles, was photographed at the Melbourne Museum’s Forest Gallery, a native Australian flora and fauna forest enclosed within the clean cool lines of the museum. Lisa Gorman, founder of the Gorman label, describes the living forest setting as the equivalent of a speed date with nature. “You’re in the middle of the city, all urban and concrete, then presto! stylemagazines.com.au

You step out of city life for 15 minutes and you’re in the rainforest,” she says. Fred Fowler’s love for abstract, layered style shines through his nature-inspired work with names such as Endangered and Extinction. This never-ending love affair with nature is prevalent in the 43-piece collection, with various elements from Fowler’s artwork appearing on a variety of fabrics and garments. From funky totes to metallic skirts and patterned shift dresses, the collaboration between Fred Fowler and Gorman has resulted in a stunning collection that is the epitome of wearable art. 27

FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS Starring Meryl Streep, this biopic about the notoriously bad opera singer will delight and horrify. MAY 12 BASTILLE DAY Idris Elba and Richard Madden? Need I say more? OK, fine. A young con artist and former CIA agent embarking on an anti-terrorist mission in France. WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT Kim Baker (Tina Fey) wants out of a dull job and relationship. And she wants to blow things up.

So she heads to Afghanistan as a war correspondent. It’s the obvious choice. MAY 19 X-MEN: APOCALYPSE The god-like first mutant, Apocalypse, wakes after thousands of years, intent on creating a new world order. It’s mutant against mutant in a race to save mankind from complete destruction. MAY 26 THE NICE GUYS In 1977 LA, a private eye (Ryan Gosling) and an enforcer (Russell Crowe) are investigating a missing girl and the death of a porn star when they uncover a shocking criminal conspiracy.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Alice Kingsleigh returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. Is it anything like the book? Probably not. Will it be amazing? Probably yes. HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE When a kid and his foster uncle go missing in the New Zealand bush, a national manhunt is organised. But do they want to be found? ARE YOU A FORGETFUL TRAVELLER? Before you jet off on an adventure, we’ve rounded up the things you should never forget in an easy-to-follow checklist. AN AMAZING TRAVEL experience you’ve been looking forward to can quickly turn ugly and stressful if you forget something super important. Here are some of the top things you should never, ever forget: EXTRA MEMORY Imagine your disappointment when you try to take a once-in-a-lifetime photo and have insufficient memory on your phone or camera. Before you leave, make sure you clear out your device and pack some extra memory cards for your camera. It’s also a good idea to take an external hard drive to store the excess travel photos and videos. YOUR TOOTHBRUSH Bad breath on a long-haul flight? No thanks. If you realise you’ve forgotten your toothbrush on the way to Brisbane airport, Skygate’s Woolworths is open 24 hours! Don’t forget the toothpaste!

MORE MONEY THAN YOU NEED Money, money, money: the more the better, but never, ever store it in one space! Get cash exchanged before you travel and store it in various places on your body and in your luggage. Preloaded travel cards with chips are also beneficial as you can avoid the hefty exchange rates while you’re travelling. PRE-LOADED GOOGLE MAPS You can’t always rely on free wi-fi and a legible map while travelling, so you might want to learn how to use Google Maps offline. Yes, offline. Search the city you’d like to access from the Google Maps app and tap “download”. Voilà!

LUGGAGE FROM THIS CENTURY When was the last time you upgraded your luggage? If you’ve got a two-wheeler canvas stitched bag, you might want to consider an upgrade. Suitcases with four wheels are SO much easier to use, especially when you’re hurrying to the gate. You also want a suitcase that’s light but durable and that will keep your things safe while travelling. Don’t waste precious weight on a hefty bag! All the difficult situations, the intensely private moments no one else knew about and every little detail that made you who you are. Do you like what you see? Expressions Dance Company and award-winning choreographer Natalie Weir explore this concept in a breathtaking production of When Time Stops. Expressions Dance Company’s most ambitious work to date, When Time Stops brings together 20 dancers to tell the story of a woman coming to terms with her life in the moments before her death. It’s an achingly personal yet intensely dramatic portrayal of new love, loss, tragedy and longing, set to Iain Grandage’s Helpmann Awardwinning score. The heart-wrenching music will be performed live on stage stylemagazines.com.au

by Queensland’s chamber orchestra, Camerata of St John’s. The Playhouse at QPAC will be home to the return season of this highly-celebrated collaboration. Design by Bill Haycock and lighting by David Walters will further enhance the hypnotic nature of the emotional production. ICE ROYALTY Frozen’s Anna and Elsa join a royal cast for the newest Disney On Ice show coming to Brisbane this June. YOU’VE SEEN THE movie, you’ve heard the songs a million times and you’ve bought all the merchandise for the little princesses and princes in your life. Now, get ready to watch their little hearts melt all over again when they see the real-life Queen Elsa and Princess Anna from Frozen in Disney On Ice: Magical Ice Festival. If you’re more of an old-school Disney fan, you can also look forward to some of your classic favourites, with The Little Mermaid’s Ariel, Beauty and the Beast’s Belle and Rapunzel from Tangled all taking starring roles. Producer Juliette Feld says Magical Ice Festival will feature a fresh new spin on how the Disney stories are presented. It also marks the very first time that Academy Award-winning animated film Frozen will come to life on ice in Australia. “In our more than 30 years of producing Disney On Ice shows, Feld Entertainment has been waiting for a film like Frozen,” says Juliette. “The most exciting part of bringing characters like Anna and Elsa to the ice for the first time is knowing that they have a powerful and inspiring message that resonates with audiences as the sisters discover the true meaning of love.” Audiences will journey through four magical worlds, each with its own feeling, colour and characters. Be prepared for a winter show like no other when Disney On Ice: Magical Ice Festival heads our way this June. We can’t wait! The cold never bothered us anyway.

Let the sing-along commence! Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore..

BRISBANE’S NEW BAR SOARS 30 STOREYS ABOVE THE CITY. HERITAGE FLAVOURS The Sazerac is the oldest known American cocktail, hailing from a New Orleans apothecary in 1838. In its early days, the cocktail was made on Sazerac French brandy and Peychaud’s Bitters, earning it the title of the first ever “branded” cocktail as well. In 1873, the cocktail was slightly altered, replacing the French brandy with American rye whiskey and a dash of absinthe. Years later, the Sazerac was immortalised as the official cocktail of New Orleans.

LADIES WHO LUNCH Saké Restaurant & Bar is hosting the ultimate special for ladies who lunch, writes Christie Sutherland. FOR MOST OF us, lunch is usually a not-soglamorous variation of a takeaway salad and a double shot coffee. Not this time! When a few Stylers were treated to a lunch get-together, it was far removed from the daily lunch al desko. Saké Restaurant & Bar at Eagle Street Pier is the place to be, especially with a ladies’ lunch special each weekend that will put the sparkle into everyone’s social calendar. We highly suggest you dress up, get that blowout and show off your Birkin (insert dream bag here). Gather the girls on Saturdays and Sundays for your choice of a six-course set menu with a glass of bubbles until 2.30pm ($59 per person), or an indulgent two-hour bottomless bubbles package

($110 per person) to make it all the more fun. These ladies’ lunches are available to book for groups of four or more. We start with steamed edamame and then enjoyed some of Saké’s signature dishes, including kingfish jalapeño with yuzu soy, steamed prawn shumai, Japanese eggplant with miso, and the chef’s special selection of sushi, which left our tastebuds in food heaven. You won’t be disappointed with this exciting date. And who can pass up an opportunity to hang out with their girlfriends? PIA AND HER BOYFRIEND, KANE, DECIDED TO TAKE THE PLUNGE INTO THE UNKNOWN AND BUILD A BLOGGING EMPIRE TOGETHER.

#GIRLBOSS From corporate law to internet entrepreneur, Pia Muehlenbeck is taking over the social media game one selfie at a time, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. WHILE STUDYING LAW at university and blogging about health in her spare time, Pia Muehlenbeck’s social media following began to skyrocket. Intent on taking her hobby to the next level, Pia began to focus on Finding the Finer, a blog filled with “your daily dose of tropical luxe”. Eventually, Pia and her boyfriend, Kane Vato, decided to take the plunge into the unknown and build a blogging empire together. With Kane behind the lens and Pia splitting her time between modelling and blogging, everything began to fall into place. Kane’s Instagram has more than 25,000 followers and the carefully curated content

on Pia’s personal Instagram (created only 18 months ago) has attracted the attention of more than 1.2 million followers. With numbers like these, it’s not hard to imagine why big brands are excited to work with Pia and Kane. Now based out of Sydney, Pia and Kane don’t just spend their days blogging and taking amazing shots for Instagram. One day, unable to find good quality and eco-friendly yoga mats for a blog post, the couple set out to make their own. This simple idea evolved into a new entrepreneurial venture: SLINKII Athletic, Pia’s own clothing brand. “We spent all our savings buying hundreds of mats and the rest is history!” Pia says.

SLINKII Athletic now includes enviable (and totally Insta-worthy) swimwear, activewear and organic tank tops. Her fourth collection is launching this month, and her first range of menswear is due to drop in the near future. While Pia admits she doesn’t really view herself as a girl boss, she explains that there is something extremely refreshing about being in control of her own future. So what’s Pia’s advice for creating your own job and making it work? “Don’t wait. Do it now! If you truly view yourself as the best person for the job, regardless of anything else, you’ll make it. And you deserve to.”

CRYSTAL CLEAR Michael Lo Sordo joins forces with Swarovski for his AW16 collection. THE WAIT IS over – Michael Lo Sordo’s highly-anticipated AW16 collection is finally here. This season, the Australian designer has partnered with Swarovski for the collection, entitled “Mes Cheries”. Renowned for creating collections that focus on simplicity and elegance, Michael Lo Sordo always has the longevity of a piece in mind. The fluidity and ease of the label’s silhouettes is emphasised by the choice of fabrics. His AW16 collection stays true to the label’s aesthetic while combining this with a deconstructed edge. WINTER IS COMING…

WHAT IS LASER TECHNOLOGY?

TIME TO DISCOVER CUBA

THE COOLER WEATHER is finally starting to make an appearance, but don’t make a mad dash for the indoors just yet. Alfresco events are still very much the order of the day, giving event planners the chance to make the most of Brisbane’s sub-tropical weather. Throwing rugs on the backs of lounge chairs, pashminas (branded or in themed colours) and heaters en masse all help to make the outdoors more comfortable during the winter months. Have fun with a warmer colour palette – insert bold reds and oranges and move towards darker tones. Dark greys and blacks become effortlessly stylish with an injection of gold or copper for an elegant, more refined look. Clever use of lounge furniture, floor rugs, warming lamps, and throw cushions can create a cosy, intimate hub of warmth for your guests. So whatever the style or venue of your next celebration or event, be sure to consider the great outdoors – a little stargazing, a communal fire pit and rustic, hearty fare are certainly a winning combination.

LASERS HAVE MULTIPLE uses, such as the reduction of redness, pigmentation, premature ageing and collagen induction. Often, people are misled about what lasers can achieve, and are unaware of other impacting factors. Laser technology ensures the correct target in the skin is addressed, decreasing the risk of negative side effects. Skin health vastly affects the benefits of laser treatments, so the healthier your skin, the more receptive it is and the more likely it is to recover quickly. Your practitioner should be able to clearly assess your skin’s health and function, rather than addressing one problematic area. They should also have a thorough understanding of skin health, use of laser machines, education and aftercare to manage and help achieve your skin goals. When looking for a laser practitioner, always ask about the procedure you’re having and the risks involved. It’s important to know what to expect during and after the procedure.

COLOURFUL SPANISH COLONIAL architecture, white sand beaches, rolling mountains, cigars and rum are just a few things Cuba has to offer. Start your trip in the capital of Havana, and take in the Plaza de Armas, Calle Mercaderes, Palacio de los Capitanes Generales and Ambos Mundos Hotel, made famous by Ernest Hemingway, who resided at the hotel for two years. Don’t miss the evening Tropicana dancing show, which has entertained guests since 1957. Trinidad is one of Cuba’s most popular spots, where you can wander cobblestone streets, and visit the romantic museum and the Plaza Mayor. Our tip: Light up a cigar at La Canchanchara Tavern, and enjoy one of their famous cocktails made from rum, honey and lemon. Escape for the day to relax on the pristine beach of Playa Pilar, regularly touted as the best beach in the entire Caribbean. Did you know that Cuba is renowned for ballet? The Cuban Ballet School is the largest in the world, receiving 50,000 applications each year and accepting only 4000 students.

WHAT ARE PREMIUM PAINTS?

VIRTUAL VS. REALITY

HELLO, HYDRATION!

PAINTING CONTRACTORS OFTEN overuse the term “premium paints”. Many lower quality paints also carry the label for marketing purposes, meaning the painter is able to use it although in many cases it is a misnomer. Some painters use the term “premium paint” to avoid actually listing a brand, thus allowing them more flexibility. In some cases, this means the sub-contractor uses the paint of their preference. In other cases, the contractor may purchase paint at a cheaper price than was allowed for within the quote, or use stock previously purchased (which may have been opened and partially used). If you see “premium paint” listed on a quotation, you should ask to know exactly what product you’re getting. Every paint type has vastly different properties that can affect the look, protection of underlying surfaces and longevity of the product. It should also be mentioned that product warranties on these paints are generally much lower – if provided at all – than their true premium counterparts.

AS DEVELOPERS EXPLORE more efficient and cost-effective ways to sell off-the-plan developments, we are seeing an increase in the use of virtual and augmented reality technology. This technology looks to be the way of the future for off-the-plan residential sales, particularly if you live in a different city (or country) to the property you are considering purchasing. But how do you know that what you are being shown is actually what you will be buying when the property is completed? With virtual reality, all you are really buying is a promise, so it is important to seek out developers who value meeting their buyers in person. These developers are the ones who can provide you with the experience of standing in completed developments that they have previously delivered. If you are making a significant investment, it’s important to see a finished product from your developer before any contracts are signed, to ensure that you have confidence in your relationship with your developer.

AS A NUTRITIONIST, I am well aware of the importance of maintaining hydration on a daily basis. Drinking enough water helps us perform to our best ability, and our digestive health, skin and even weight benefit as a result. Did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you’re actually already dehydrated? Rather than waiting until that point, try having a supply of filtered water on hand. If it’s nearby and easy to access, water becomes the obvious choice to accompany any meal or snack. With two young babies, I have to pay constant attention to my hydration. Installing a Zip Hydrotap in our home kitchen was easy, and it has helped everyone in my family to improve their drinking habits. Now, we have a readily available supply of filtered hot water for the twins’ bottles and the entire family is drinking more water. No more plastic bottles, no more running out of filtered water – our Zip makes sure we can drink chilled sparking or still water at any time of the day or night.

Glasses have now become a form of selfexpression and a way to showcase your own creativity, style and personality, all while protecting your eyes and enhancing vision. Independent designers are bursting with ideas for huge ranges of fascinating frame options. Designs are bigger and bolder than ever: oversized, mirrors, or round shapes – fashionable eyewear is becoming increasingly prominent with each new innovation from the makers. PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR IN the workplace can be incredibly frustrating – it feels like a no-win situation. Here are some ways to identify your passive-aggressive co-workers: • They say nothing in meetings, but make comments afterwards in corridors. • They say what they think to everyone... except the person involved in the issue. • Everything revolves around them. So how can you combat this behaviour? • Don’t let their passive behaviour make you become aggressive – keep a cool head. • Call out the issue, i.e. “I heard you were not happy with the meeting. Let’s discuss.” • Stay focused on improving the future rather than dwelling on past issues. • Maintain eye contact. • Don’t give up – it might take them a while to realise you mean business. Focus on your expected outcomes and what’s best for the project, tasks or team. If trying to combat their poor behaviour is taking too long, try to address it at a more convenient time.

ABOUT 31 PER cent of Australians rent, and about 42 per cent of them are aged between 18 and 34. If you’re a rental property owner, it’s useful to know what these renters are looking for. Recent research from Domain reveals what influences renters in their decision when choosing a property. Here are some important factors that can affect a tenant’s decision: • The suburb or area in which the property is located (this topped the poll, with 73 per cent of respondents citing it as important). • Convenient access to public transport (the third most important factor). • Proximity to shopping and shopping centres. • Off-street parking or a carport. • Outdoor space such as a courtyard. Once a property has been purchased, you can make some simple and clever alterations to improve the property’s rental value. Consider the number of bedrooms, the benefits of an internal laundry, built-in wardrobes, ample storage and making the home friendly for renters who may own pets.

DIAMOND BEFORE THE CERTIFICATE

ADDRESSING AGGRESSION

SAFETY AND STYLE

IS PAPERWORK IMPORTANT when it comes to buying a diamond? The answer is... sometimes! Diamond grading labs have changed their parameters in recent years, so what does this mean for you? It means that what is graded as an excellent cut today may not be as amazing as you had hoped. These days, around 50 per cent of all diamonds graded receive an excellent cut grade – that’s a big bracket! So where does this put your diamond? Is it in the top five per cent, the middle of the pack or towards the bottom of the pile? This information isn’t on the certificate, so you need to ensure that you’re not paying top price for a diamond that’s in the bottom percentage. That’s why buying purely based on paper can be risky. If you want a diamond that sparkles unlike any other, then it is important to visit a diamond cut specialist. As a diamond expert, I can show you exactly where your diamond sits in the diamond cut spectrum, or you can read my book, Rock Her World, for more great guidelines.

SOME OF US can become emotionally aggressive towards those we love from time to time. When this occurs, it’s important to consider why it’s happening. It is likely that our aggression is actually a fear-fuelled attempt to control others, probably because we feel like we’ve lost our own selfconfidence and self-control. Emotional aggression is usually a knee-jerk reaction to a much more deep-seated issue which can be resolved in an alternative way. Displays of emotional aggression should serve as a reminder that we need to work on conflict resolution on a deeper, more personal level. Calm assertion is the most effective way to find a solution for the problem, but it can be a difficult skill to master. If you find yourself faced with emotional aggression, whether as the perpetrator or victim, give yourself permission to pause, then take a deep, slow breath. Resist the feelings of shame and blame and instead focus on healing yourself and asking for help if ever you need it.

WHEN SELECTING WINDOW furnishings for a child’s room, it’s important to consider both visual aesthetic and practicality. But finding products that are suitable from infancy through to pre-teen can be difficult. Here are my tips: • Go for blockout – they are perfect for regulating temperature and light to ensure a peaceful sleep for all ages. • Pick a neutral colour for your window coverings and let the wall colour and furnishings show your child’s character. • Purchase a product that is durable and has great longevity to stand the test of time. • Cordless or wand products are essential for safety, especially with mobile children. • If you’re renting or have acquired a house with existing blinds, child safety devices are available until you are ready to upgrade. Still stuck for ideas? You can’t go past the humble curtain. With a wide range of colours, textures and styles available, you won’t be starved for choice. Curtains also make for the perfect hiding spot!

FOOD+DRINK Nitrogen parfait

A CHEMICAL REACTION This uber-trendy Valley newcomer is concocting innovative flavours and a chilled vibe, writes Hannah Doody. FROM THE CREATORS of Gerard’s Bistro and Gerard’s Bar comes The Apo – the newest bar and restaurant to grace Brisbane’s Bakery Lane. Charmingly tucked away in a heritage-listed building that dates back to 1862, The Apo draws inspiration from the site’s previous function as one an apothecary hall. The décor is a nod to the building’s history, with old, raw-edged exposed brickwork, concrete floors and even some original apothecary instruments adorning the bar. It’s dark, moody and beautifully restored, creating a relaxed and fuss-free vibe. To begin, we’re treated to a modern take on a classic cocktail: a vanilla and rhubarb negroni served with one huge ice cube. It’s sweet, delicious and is just one example of the tipples on offer from the incredible cocktail list. Head chef Braden White (Hatch & Co and Rickys River Bar + Restaurant, Noosa) has crafted an impressive, modern progressive menu. I try to envisage how each flavour will unfold on the plate, and then on the palate. Exotic and unfamiliar words jump out at me – “purslane”, “raclette”, “’nduja” – and it becomes clear that this place isn’t quite the stylemagazines.com.au

Moonlight Flat Oysters

More than just a trendy concept and sleek décor..

modest eatery the décor would have you believe. Our first dish is the Moonlight Flat Oysters with oyster cream. As a budding oyster connoisseur, this dish is everything I’ve ever dreamed of – and more. The presentation is incredibly beautiful, with the oysters nestled in a bed of dried kelp. The waiter pours dry ice into the bowl, creating a wispy cloud around the oysters and giving the impression they have been plucked from the ocean only moments before. Other highlights include the Wagyu tatare, baby carrot with bee pollen and honeycomb, and the tender lamb rump. Last, we’re treated to the varied textures of the nitrogen parfait, which is light yet indulgent and satisfying. In the prime location of Fortitude Valley’s ultra-hip Bakery Lane, The Apo proves it is so much more than just a trendy concept and sleek décor. The menu showcases unique elements combined and presented in creative ways. If you’re after a firstclass dining experience without the pretentious vibe, this is the place for you. PETER’S TIPS FOR SELECTING FRESH FRUIT

1 2 3 4

TRUST YOUR RETAILER AND ASK FOR HELP. IT’S LIKELY THEY HAVE BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY FOR A WHILE AND KNOW THEIR PRODUCE!

PICK OF THE BUNCH Superior Fruit owner Peter Maniatis shares why it’s worth visiting your local grocer to stock up on your fruit and vegetables. A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS operating for 30 years, Superior Fruits was passed down from Chris Maniatis to his son, Peter and his brother. Superior Fruit has always been a big part of the Maniatis family. Growing up, Peter watched his father create a concept that fosters memories with families and friends. Great food isn’t just about sustenance; it’s about passion, enjoyment and creating an experience. Peter has developed a strong work philosophy: his simple belief is that everybody should have access to quality food and produce. Superior Fruit has a strict process to ensure that every piece of produce sold is of the highest quality. There is even a full-time staff member who checks the produce regularly to ensure that it meets the appropriate benchmarks. Peter says visiting your local fruit shop should be an experience for all your senses. With bright, fresh and delicious-looking fruit on the shelves, people will love what they see and it is imperative that the food tastes and smells as good as it looks. stylemagazines.com.au

Peter says there are many differences between shopping at his store and at a supermarket chain. One of these differences is that Peter has spent years establishing strong personal relationships with his suppliers. These relationships enable Superior Fruit to offer customers a wide selection of fresh produce, condiments, cheeses and gourmet food brands, all of which have been tried and tested by Peter himself – something that is not always feasible for a branch of a large supermarket chain. “If it’s sourced from the same place as a large grocery chain, it won’t hit my shelves!” Peter says. As well as stocking the highest quality fresh fruit and vegetables, Superior Fruits is also the home to Wendy’s Kitchen - started by Peter’s mother, Wendy. The chefs, bakers and kitchen hands are all dedicated to creating delicious salads, baked cakes, dips, pizzas and cheese platters. BODY WISE

MY JOURNEY STARTED in January, when I was wracked with guilt about all the delicious chocolate, wine and carbs I had consumed throughout the festive season. I’m a firm believer in the “new year, new you” philosophy, so when Siobhan White of Hypoxi Bulimba asked me to join her eight-week challenge, I jumped at the chance to redeem myself. The Hypoxi method is three times more effective at targeting stubborn fat and cellulite around your hips, thighs, bottom and stomach than conventional exercise. Having achieved great weight loss results with Hypoxi Bulimba in the past, I knew with a bit of work, work, work I’d be looking like Rihanna in no time. Incorporating an in-body 570 scanner to track results, a meal plan, three Hypoxi sessions and an infrared sauna session per week, as well as two full-body posture assessments, this team challenge is like no other in Brisbane. With such a detailed process, there’s no opportunity to fudge results. You even learn your metabolic rate to better understand how your body burns energy. By the end of the eight weeks, I had lost 4.9 kilograms and a total of 16 centimetres. My fellow challengers (a group of 15) collectively dropped an impressive 88 kilograms and 328 centimetres. With a new Hypoxi location opening in Newstead this month, there’s never been a better time to start shaping your way to a fitter, healthier you.

SCULPT YOUR BODY We all have those stubborn fat areas that just won’t budge, but now you can combat fat without even breaking a sweat. BRISBANE’S PREMIER MEDICAL beauty clinic, Perfectly Smooth, has a simple treatment that will target all your trouble areas – and it’s the latest in fat-destroying technology. SculpSure is a non-invasive body contouring system for the reduction of stubborn fat in areas such as the abdomen and love handles. The 25-minute procedure destroys up to 24 per cent of treated fat cells with a controlled hyperthermic laser treatment that elevates adipose tissue temperature without damaging the surrounding tissue. Typically, fat cells stored in our bodies remain constant throughout our adult life. As we lose weight, the fat cells may become smaller but they never decrease in number. Many people have difficulty losing weight in particular areas, even with diet and exercise. stylemagazines.com.au

But with this breakthrough in non-invasive body contouring, the treated fat cells are permanently destroyed and will not regenerate, which is what makes this method so effective. After only one SculpSure treatment, the body naturally eliminates the fat cells. This painless treatment requires no downtime and you’ll see positive results in as little as six weeks, with optimal results usually seen at 12 weeks. With so many patients pleased after only one treatment, people often decide to target multiple areas. Your SculpSure clinician can assist you with the creation of a personal treatment plan. Achieving a slim and sculpted appearance has never been easier with SculpSure.

GET TO KNOW PIP AND CLAIRE

ACTIVE IN STYLE Exercising has never looked so good! Pip Edwards and Claire Tregoning sit down with Leith Wilson to chat about P.E Nation. PIP EDWARDS ALWAYS had a project brewing in the back of her mind, but it wasn’t until she had lunch with then-colleague Claire Tregoning that she realised her dream had true potential. “We discussed the idea, realised what my initials were and P.E Nation was born! I think when timing, creativity and commerciality all intersect, you know you’re onto something,” Pip says.

68

Drawing inspiration from ’80s and ’90s street and music pop culture has defined the authenticity of the P.E brand. “Our pieces truly blur the lines between sport and streetwear. It’s an activewear-inspired brand that sees you through every stage of activity, with pre- and post-workout gear and weekend wear too,” Claire says. Colour-blocking and retro details combined with tomboy style give P.E Nation its effortless attitude. “There’s also a P.E (Pip Edwards) aesthetic to it and no one else can do P.E like we can!” they say. “It’s bold, fun and engineered for training but the execution gives our products everyday wearability.” Showcasing at MBFWA with a standalone presentation this year, the dynamic duo is looking forward to some future collaborations. “We’re super excited as we’re not just putting our range out there, we are partnering with some amazing local and global brands on some super cool collaborations which complete the P.E aesthetic from head to toe,” they say. Pip and Claire say it’s their similar creative ideas and impeccable eye for detail that has fostered such flawless teamwork.

WHERE DID YOU AND CLAIRE MEET? PIP: WE WORKED TOGETHER AT SASS & BIDE. CLAIRE WAS THE SENIOR DESIGNER AND I WAS THE SENIOR CREATIVE. HOW DO YOU KEEP IN SHAPE? PIP: I LOVE SOFT SAND RUNNING ON BONDI BEACH, F45 SESSIONS AND BOXING WITH THE BUF GIRLS. CLAIRE: I’M A PILATES GIRL MIXED IN WITH HIIT TRAINING. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES IN THE P.E COLLECTION? IT CHANGES EVERY DAY! WE LOVE ALL OF THE PIECES BUT WE’VE BOTH BEEN ROCKING THE ROCKY MESH TEE AND WE’RE LOVING THE A TRAIN BOMBER

“We’re totally on the same page! We can finish each other’s sentences because we’re so in sync. We share the same creative ideas and direction with the same eye for detail,” Pips says. With plans to expand globally in the next five years, the duo wants to widen the P.E range to offer knitwear, denim and accessories. “We want to have standalone stores and strong presence in the US and UK,” Pip says. “I would love to see P.E on a few Aussie babes as well,” Pip says. Topping the list are celebrities such as Jessica Hart, Ruby Rose, Samara Weaving, Margot Robbie and Elle Macpherson. One of the best things about P.E Nation’s versatile range is that you can add a few styling pieces to instantly create an athleisure vibe. Just swap your runners for lifestyle trainers, tie a jacket around your waist and you’re good to go! MAY16

BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT Function Well’s new Restoration Zone proves that the key to health is more than just exercise. COMBINING FITNESS AND relaxation, Teneriffe’s Function Well health club offers a holistic approach to wellbeing that revitalises body, mind and spirit. Rather than adhering to the notion that highintensity training is the only way to achieve optimum fitness and health, Function Well is inspired by the ancient Chinese tradition of yin and yang, which teaches that the opposite forces of work and rest are interdependent. “In order to have yang and the motivation to work hard, train hard and pursue excellence in all aspects of life, you also need yin to recover and restore your body and mind so you can push yourself further in and out of the gym,” explains owner Darren Bain. Function Well’s Athletic Zone features a range of high-intensity training techniques, with classes including boxing and CrossFit. stylemagazines.com.au

This month will see the opening of Function Well’s new Restoration Zone, a space dedicated purely to regeneration, rest and relaxation. The Restoration Zone gives members of Function Well the opportunity to restore their bodies with personalised yoga and meditation, relaxation in the steam room or a calming nap in a sleep pod to rest the body. In addition to these restful and rejuvenating features, Function Well has also created dedicated practitioner suites for physiotherapists and naturopaths to create the perfect gym experience. BUMPS AND LUMPS?

AVOID RACOON ROUND BROW

THE INS AND OUTS OF IPL

IF YOU’RE PREGNANT and have noticed the veins on your legs are more visible, don’t be alarmed! Your body is going through a number of changes at the moment and this is one of them. Producing extra blood to support your baby places pressure on blood vessels, and increased hormone levels will dilate blood vessels further, which may result in varicose veins. While weight gain during pregnancy is normal, an excessive increase in weight can place additional strain on your body so it’s important to keep active and healthy. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time and try to walk or stretch every hour to keep blood flowing. While compression stockings may offer comfort and support, these should be correctly fitted and worn with medical guidance. Within six months of giving birth, many women report that their legs return to the way they looked before pregnancy. Other women may need treatment and will need to decide whether to delay the procedure or have it before falling pregnant to avoid further risk of damage.

AS WE GROW older, our wrinkles become more defined and our hair changes colour when we rather wish it wouldn’t! A well-defined, full and evenly-coloured brow enhances beauty and can also take years off your appearance in minutes. The secret lies in the shape and how the eyebrow coincides with the other features of the face. What we like to call the “Raccoon Round Brow Syndrome” is where the eyebrow is curved to a high arch, the same shape as the tired lines beneath the eye. This means that the eyebrow is drawing attention to the tired lines you want to conceal! Our Arch Angels are experts in creating a brow that flatters only your best features! In a Brow Lift-Shaping Service, our Arch Angels will help transform your look, educate you on ways to maintain the new brow, and give you tips on how to avoid falling back into old plucking habits. Visit one of our seven stores this Mother’s Day to start looking and feeling more youthful!

THE WORLD IS going crazy over IPL! But what exactly is this popular new beauty treatment and what does it involve? IPL (intense pulsed light) can help achieve a more even skin tone, and is used in the treatment of brown age spots, skin rejuvenation, pigmentation, broken or burst capillaries and generalised redness of the face or neck. With highly pinpointed lasers, IPL can dramatically improve the look of your skin with no downtime and minimal discomfort. When choosing a treatment provider, the type of IPL machine they use is as important as the skill of the clinician. Sadly, not all machines are created equal. In our clinic, we use the Lumenis M22, which is the gold standard of treatment of skin conditions and the latest technology used by physicians around the world. This machine enables us to treat more types of patients and conditions with better outcomes. Book an appointment with Cosmetic Image Clinics today to find out more about IPL.

WHAT IS INFERTILITY?

CARING FOR AGEING PARENTS

RACE DAY FLORALS

WHEN IT COMES time to start a family, most of us take it for granted that it will be an easy and natural process. And for many, this is the case. After one year of unprotected intercourse, 85 per cent of Australian couples will become pregnant. For the remaining 15 per cent, further investigation is required. Possible reasons for infertility are fairly evenly split. In general, infertility is due to male factors in 30 per cent and female factors in 30 per cent. Both male and female factors could be the cause in a further 30 per cent, with unexplained infertility occurring in only 10 per cent of cases. Common reasons for infertility include age, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, low sperm count and previous vasectomy. Australian fertility services have an outstanding record of being able to successfully assist those who wish to start a family. The majority of referred patients are able to become pregnant without the need for IVF. If you have any concerns about infertility, talk to your GP about a referral.

WE’RE SO FOCUSED on our own ageing that we often forget that our parents are going through the same thing. Soon, they may lose the ability to carry out some tasks that were once effortless. If and when that happens, it’s time for you to step up to the plate. There are many ways we can express gratitude for everything that our parents have done for us. It might be as simple as teaching them how to use a smartphone. They might need assistance with transport, health needs, chores, and projects around the home. Or you may need to take on a slightly more involved role in order to help with the legal or financial matters that become increasingly important to ensure good quality of life. Remember, your help must come with acceptance and patience and should never override your parents’ autonomy. Although it can be a sad and challenging time in your life, helping your parents can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

IT’S TIME TO consider your looks for the Brisbane Racing Club Winter Racing Carnival. The official flowers and fashion themes are: BTC Cup, May 14: Salmon rose, with a fashion theme of Bold Colour. Doomben Cup, May 21: Scottish thistle, with a Fashion Forward theme. Doomben 10,000, May 28: Yellow rose, with the fashion theme being Metallic. Ladies’ Oaks Day, June 4: White rose, with a Feminine fashion theme. Gents, this means something playful to show off your personality. Stradbroke Day, June 11: Red rose. For fashion, look to black and white with a touch of red. While you don’t have to work your outfit entirely around the flower, it’s a good idea to complement it with a touch of the colour in your pocket handkerchief, tie or socks. Want to know how to be the best dressed on the day? Talk to your tailor or stylist. Remember, Suit of Change Day is May 19. Tickets for the cocktail party are still available for purchase from suitofchange.com.au.

MOBILE STYLE With 29 years’ experience in the industry, Donna Kirby knows hair. Style caught up with the Brisbane hair stylist to hear about her mobile styling service. How did you get your start in hair styling? I started my career in Brisbane in 1988 and won awards through my apprenticeship before going on to open my own salon. After five years, I realised I was losing sight of what I love doing, which is simply making people beautiful. So I set off for London and the US, where I worked in prestigious salons to hone my skills. I then returned to Australia, had two beautiful children and worked in top salons in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Tell us about the mobile styling concept. The main reason I decided to create a mobile service was to offer flexibility and a personal

touch to my clients. I travel as far as the Sunshine Coast for some appointments, but most of my clients are based in the inner-city of Brisbane. What kind of clients do you work with? They are from all walks of life. Many are time-poor professionals such as judges, lawyers and doctors. I also see many families where both parents are working and they all need an appointment. My clients want the one-on-one attention without having to deal with the large clientele of salons. What sort of styling are you known for? My specialties are blondes, great blow dries and

straightening. I have a technique called the “Chelsea Blonde”, named after the salon I worked for on King’s Road in Chelsea – it’s clean, classy and stylish. What hair trends are we going to see more of in the coming seasons? We can look forward to

UNIQUE BEAUTY WOULD YOU LOVE a dreamy, dewy, glowing complexion? Of course you would! DMK Enyzme Therapy is a revolutionary 90-minute treatment that rids your skin of any pesky dead protein, toxins and other nasties. Whereas most cosmetic facials treat the skin on a surface level, this scientific-based method uses transfer messenger enzymes to strengthen the skin’s structural integrity and create a healthier environment that will help cells thrive, resulting in a glow from deep within. The DMK Enzyme treatment is offered exclusively within clinics that share the DMK philosophy for natural pharmacology for skin rejuvenation. Check the website for your closest clinic! FRESH ON THE FIELD New York glamour this racing season? Nailed it! I’M SO EXCITED for the beginning of the winter racing season! It’s such a fun time to get all glammed up! Many of our clients at Brooklyn Beauty Bar have won various Fashions on the Field competitions in the past. Without exception, they tell me that it’s the little things that make the big difference to their confidence, and add that extra oomph to their outfits for a beautiful polished look. From perfectly glossy nails in a hue to complement your outfit, to perfectly-shaped brows, va-va-voom lash extensions to draw attention to your eyes and a beautiful even and natural-looking spray tan, attention to detail will really pay off. And for those really special racing days, professionally-applied makeup will give you that immaculate and perfectly-groomed look to enhance your own beauty and complement your outfit.

We use Becca Cosmetics; the fantastic contouring products help reveal your natural beauty rather than covering it up. By matching your skin tone, you can create perfect-looking skin while highlighting your favourite features and amplifying the look with a dramatic eye. It’s lightweight, luxurious and advanced and is perfect for a long day at the track (and into the night). For lipstick, we adore Bite – it really is the best (Louis Vuitton released it!). Fabulous, rich, sexy colours and so good you can literally eat it, as it has no nasty chemicals. The strong pigments make it long-lasting too! New York glamour this racing season? Nailed it! STYLE TRIAL

SMOOTH TALK Sarah McAlpine Style Trials cellulite-busting solutions with Ella Baché Myer Centre Brisbane. 74

IT’S AN AGE-OLD problem affecting up to 90 per cent of women; cellulite does not discriminate. You can experience it at size six or size 16, and it’s enough of a problem to dictate the length of your skirt, the thickness of the fabric you’ll wear, and even the way you sit! We’re often told that there’s not a whole lot we can do about it, but technology is constantly evolving in a bid to combat the battle of the bulge. Ella Baché at Myer Centre Brisbane has acquired some of the latest technology to tone, sculpt and contour your body, focusing particularly on those places where it seems the fat just won’t budge. I trialled a full course of the non-invasive Lipomassage treatment and was thrilled with the visible results. Your initial consultation mostly involves chatting with your therapist about your goals, problem areas and current lifestyle habits (and trying not to fudge the truth). Your therapist will also take a few pictures of you (for the cringe-worthy but totally necessary “before” images), and the advanced technology will recommend a treatment plan specific to your body shape. The treatment itself is really quite gentle, and uses rollers to glide over your body, massaging the fat and breaking down the cellulite. After eight treatments in four weeks, I noticed a significant difference, and managed to lose about 2.5 inches off of my waist, hip and leg measurements. GREEN DREAM Style paid a visit to The Soul Pantry to chat about creating an urban oasis. BORN IN 2013, The Soul Pantry traded as That Flower Shop for three years in Alderley. Continuing to expand at a rapid rate, the store moved to its current location in Newmarket in 2015, taking up residence in a charming 1950s tin shed. Growing up in Brazil’s São Paulo, the third largest city in the world, creator Patricia Foley has always wanted to break free from urban confinement and create an oasis of her own in a big city. “My grandmother lived in a small apartment in the CBD. Her tiny verandah was filled with orchids and other plants,” Patricia says. “It was a little oasis in an immense concrete jungle, and I wanted to recreate this experience with The Soul Pantry.” With a flair for creating the perfect relaxing retail experience, Patricia and business partner Kimbra Spurgin have made The Soul Pantry the perfect

TRAVEL PAWSITIVELY PAWESOME If leaving your pet behind when you holiday is a traumatic experience for both of you, Hounddogs Beach House is an off-fur you can’t refuse, writes Christie Sutherland. YOU COUNT DOWN the days to a relaxing holiday, but you never look forward to leaving your favourite four-legged family members behind. Since getting my fur baby, the search for the perfect pet-friendly accommodation has been a challenge. You always have to compromise on something – until now. My new-found favourite is puppy-approved, so you can enjoy your getaway without having to feel guilty about leaving that furry special someone behind. Experience five-star facilities with a personal touch at the extraordinary Hounddogs Beach House. Newly-launched at the Sunshine Coast’s Dicky Beach, Hounddogs is all about deep green tones, oversized palm prints, dark wood furnishings and luxe accoutrements. You and your furry friend will feel like celebrities at this lavish beach hideaway. The best part isn’t even the ocean views or the outdoor entertainment deck (although it is incredible) – it’s having man’s best friend with you to enjoy it all. There is plenty of space to stretch out, relax and enjoy the idyllic atmosphere. Don’t be fooled by the five-star rating, astonishing views and luxurious linen: this is the kind of accommodation where you can walk around with salty hair and messy paws and really make it your own. Enjoy barbecues and late-night dips in the river as you let your four-legged pal take care of the leftovers and play with endless toys and treats that are stashed away. Not to mention, there’s a human- and dog-friendly beach just a step away from the front gate. Who can resist an afternoon nap? There’s even a doggy day bed for when pup wants a snooze.
