editor’s NOTE H

oly moly, what a time!

As I write this, we’re in the midst of what is arguably the most challenging period in our history — the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s been a stressful time and like many, I’ve been a bit of an emotional wreck.

I sincerely hope that you, your family, colleagues, friends and – well everyone near and dear to you really – are okay, and trying to stay positive and healthy.

As we’ve seen all over the media, we really are in this together. This virus has not discriminated. I really don’t think there is anyone who hasn’t been or won’t be affected financially or emotionally by this catastrophe, including our own little Style family.

So, we’ve gotta ride this out. We will all come out the other side of it but it’s going to take adaptability, empathy, patience, and a whole lot of generosity and care toward each other. Particularly for those who are really doing it tough.

Let’s look for the positive.

Be grateful for what we do have.

Keep an eye out for each other and offer to help.

Look after our mental and physical health.

Support and reassure our children, no matter their age.

And call our loved ones.

Things will be okay. You never know – often the most difficult experiences result in life-changing evolution and awakening. And, as my parents always used to say, “When you wake up, everything will be better in the morning.”

coronavirus WAY WE WORK? Does working from home actually work? Courtney Frank discusses.

T

o say the last few weeks have been uncertain would be an understatement. As countries all over the world shut their borders and declare states of emergency, it’s clear that the coronavirus (COVID-19) has ignited a sense of uncertainty throughout society.

And as normal rules for business and social interactions continue to change on the daily, coronavirus is forcing millions of people all over the world to re-evaluate their current workplace strategy. It seems we may have reached a crossroads as a society – one that is in favour of working from home.

This forced experiment in working remotely is one that depends on many different individual circumstances. So, even though global companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Twitter were among the first to have their employees working from

home, here in Australia, it’s embedded in our ‘Aussie battler’ nature to just keep calm and carry on. Which is all well and good, so long as you keep socially distant (and if you’re even able to!).

The things we will come to learn in the next few months will be pivotal in how we choose to conduct work in the future. In the age of innovation, remote working gives us a chance to achieve the ultimate work-life balance. In fact, companies who allow remote work have 25% less employee turnover than those that don’t (Owl Labs). Statistics also show that 76% of workers would be more willing to stay with their current employer if they could work more flexible hours (FlexJobs).

The fact is, long before this global pandemic hit, the rate of people working from home was already rising. Over the past few weeks (and no doubt into the next APRIL 2020

few months), our society will continue to change. And it’s likely that post-coronavirus workplaces may entertain the idea of working remotely, where they may have not before. Of course, this is all dependent on the success of this forced experiment in autonomy.

Naturally, the same can’t be said for everyone. There are many essential service industries that keep our country operating who don’t have the option to work from home. Interestingly though, the innovation has now started to filter through to some of these occupations. For example, some GPs now offer the option to order your recurring prescriptions online – eliminating the need for any face-to-face contact – all from the comfort of your couch.

So, it begs the question, where will working from home take us in a post-isolation world? I guess only time will tell.

Two working mothers who turned their lifelong passion for fashion and travel into a new walk of life.

n 2015, best friends and business partners, Emily Hall and Leticia Gaskell, launched their fun and effortless shoes and accessories brand, El Zapato. You may recognise Leticia as one of Westfield Chermside’s stylists, and Emily from speaking about her incredible life story at many events around Brisbane, including Find Your Fierce.

There’s no doubt this dedicated duo bring a world of expertise and excitement to their brand, flowing onto the footwear of women all around Brisbane and beyond.

“Before launching the label, we both worked full time. Leticia in fashion and media and myself in boutique travel. The biggest leap of faith has been concentrating full time on the business whilst still raising our kids,” says Emily.

Styling the latest trends and preparing travel plans daily, the pair realised there was a gap in the market for good quality, affordable and fashionable flat footwear. “We wanted people to have the option to look further than just mainstream stores or designers,” says Leticia. But it wasn’t until Leticia’s honeymoon that she had the opportunity to arrange a few pairs of samples and wear them back in Brisbane. “We had so many comments from friends and family, so we took a gamble and started selling some!” says Leticia. “No way did we think it would take off and we would be where we are today. It really has been a fun journey,” Emily smiles.

Recently making a name for himself by capturing epic shots of professional surfers and locals alike, Joey’s snaps have made it onto billboards and magazine spreads for Stab Magazine, Billabong, Oakley and more. What’s the best way to describe your occupation?

That’s a tough one! Simply, photographer, but I hustle on the side and look after social media and online presence for a restaurant group here in Bali.

How’d you end up in Bali?

I had been to Bali a few times and loved it. Then, in early 2016 I deferred from uni and figured I had enough money to live out here for maybe four months. Fast forward four years and this is definitely where I now call home.

What was the original plan?

I was studying to become a high school geography and history teacher!

Describe to us your normal day…

Fortunately, I don’t have a “normal” day often. On surf jobs we usually skip out of Bali to surrounding islands, so there’s a bit of prep before getting to the job. Are we flying? Or, packing a beat-up van full of boards and surfers and 10 |

using Indonesia’s connecting ferry system to get somewhere? It can be quite a mission! With weddings or a restaurant shoot there are less variables. One day we’re swimming around crystal blue waters in North Sumatra and the next working with a chef back in Bali or hanging out with a couple documenting their wedding.

What makes the perfect surf shot?

Weather and light play a huge part, then waves and location. I don’t think I’ve gotten the perfect shot yet but some I’m certainly proud of.

How many photos would you take to get the winning shot?

I have swum out with a friend on sunset, had one wave before dark and nailed something and then other times, thousands.

Bragging rights approved, what’s been your greatest achievement?

I’m unsure if I have anything worth really bragging about! I once hit a full court shot in basketball?

The surf season and wedding season are just around the corner, so will be balancing those two as best as possible. At the same time, two friends and I are starting a little accommodation project here in Bali, so that should keep us busy for the next year or so.

Where is a good place to start?

I really like to think about a room from bottom to top and usually start with the floors, such as a rug. I then think about how to improve the lighting, either by updating curtains and blinds or adding some nice lamps or pendants.

What are some easy seasonal swaps that can make your home more autumnal?

During the cooler months I’m all about a room with lots of texture such as cushions, throws and rugs, that are soft and make for a welcoming space.

Six60

Beginning as humble mates at University in Dunedin, Six60 are now the kings of New Zealand music making history as the first NZ band to sell out Western Springs stadium, joining the ranks of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. We caught up with bassist (and secret Aussie) Chris Mac to talk band life and how they once ended up in a ferry prison, writes Dinushka Gunasekara.

How did Six60 happen?

There were three guys living in 660 Castle Street who all grew up in families where you’d pick up the guitar and jam. The band didn’t start until they became friends with Eli, who was a bouncer at a gig and secretly a great drummer. They told the band performing they wanted to start their own band but needed a drummer, and the band lead them to Eli. What’s the craziest story that’s happened while touring?

Tours are just filled with so many moments of either pure elation or total soul-destruction.

I won’t tell you the circumstances but the end of this story is that a couple of us got arrested on a ferry going from Norway to Amsterdam and were put into a ferry prison cell. I didn’t even know they had jails on a ferry. Now I’ll never forget!

How does it feel having fans all over the world?

We’re starting to get the encore chant in different languages, which is really cool.

Sometimes we don’t know what they’re saying, but we assume they want another song. Otherwise, they’re very upset in unison about something.

What’s your creative process like?

It changes all the time. The one thing to say about the creative process is to just do things. I think some people hide behind a process or hide behind inspiration when the reality is, if you don’t sit down to write a song or pick up your paintbrush, you’re not actually going to achieve anything. So, it’s simple: do the thing and create!

One of Six60’s first singles was ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’. Why is it important to not forget your roots?

It can mean where you came from physically because there’s more of a connection to a place than some people might think.

It can be your family. It can also be more philosophical or more spiritual. There’s some reason that you exist, even if it’s just pure happenstance.

• If you must have requests, suggest they go to a nominated person, like the emcee.

Green is trending this season, and we don’t mean the colour.

rom Victorian tragedy to victorious hues, the colour green has had a tumultuous history in fashion. The once arseniclaced dye of the 1800s brought forth the demise of many fashion-forward, gown-adorned women, but its redemption arc completed its ascent when ‘Greenery’ was named the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2017. Today, green is making a comeback in all things vogue, however the first step in embracing it has nothing to do with the shade.

Sustainability is how we’re going green, and it’s a fashion movement the world has been dying for. In Australia, the demand for more clothes at less value is one of the highest in the world, but low costs for customers equals high costs for the environment. Fast fashion churns out tonnes of cheap clothes in developing countries, wasting huge amounts of energy and resources while polluting waterways with toxic chemicals. Many materials we double-tap are synthetic and non-biodegradable, meaning even washing can be hazardous, as they shed plastic micro-fibres that sneak into water catchments and oceans.

While the fashion industry is more than liable, the onus still lies with the consumer. If

we stop demanding it, brands stop supplying it. However, doing the right thing doesn’t mean you have to forage for leaves and a sewing machine; plenty of brands are making green look oh-so-good.

James Street resident label, Elka Collective, has sewn sustainability into their autumn collection, ‘Shift’, by implementing natural dyeing and a selection of yarns that are ethical or recycled. “We want to do as much for the planet as we can while still producing beautiful collections,” they said. “As young women and mums, the health of our planet is incredibly important to us.” Meanwhile, luxury Australian swimwear brand, Peony, is ensuring we still have somewhere to swim in by combining recycled fabrics with an initiative to clean up our oceans through the unique fabric, Econyl. Comprised of abandoned fishnets and nylon waste from landfills and oceans, Econyl reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 80%. “Growing up in Australia has given us a deep love and respect for the natural world,” Peony said. “We have an inherent desire to preserve and protect it.”

Song you walked down the aisle to?

In the Coptic Orthodox tradition, the soon-to-be husband and wife walk down the aisle to a hymn called “Epouro”, which means “O King of Peace”.

How did he propose? Ben picked me up after being at a friend’s hens weekend and convinced me we were going out for a special family dinner. We were the first to get ready and he insisted we left before everyone else for a drink at Palazzo Versace Hotel, Gold Coast. We walked along the marina and looked at the gondolas (which I love!). To my surprise, there was a gondola waiting with my favourite dish (carbonara) and wine with our names on it. We hopped in and set sail. While I was enjoying the view, he pulled a ring out and asked me to marry him!

Describe the church location and why you chose it... Whilst Ben and I are Coptic Orthodox, we have always loved the iconography that the Greek church displays. Every inch of the walls and ceiling is beautifully painted in the life of Christ, you’re completely surrounded by Him. Stand out moment? Ben’s oldest brother, Josh, read a quote by St. John Chrysostom.

I thought it was so beautiful and it has stuck with me ever since: “The husband and wife should be like the hand and the eye. When the hand hurts, the eyes should cry. And when the eye cries, the hand should wipe away it’s tears.”

We’ve always aimed to create pieces that mums and daughters can wear together.

Where does your passion stem from?

My personal values of being intentional and using what is in my hands to make a difference in people’s lives. Prior to having children I was a teacher, and my work always meant so much more to me than just ‘teaching’ children. I felt invested in each child’s life and wellbeing. Similarly, when my hobby of creating jewellery for my daughter and her friends turned into my job, I saw it as an opportunity to make meaningful jewellery that would offer sentimental value, as well as being aesthetically beautiful.

Our customers are more than just people buying our products. Assisting those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged is very important to me. We give a percentage of our proceeds to support the ongoing work of Eagle’s Wings, a development organisation working on the ground in Zambia.

The usual comprehensive pregnancy upkeep may not involve a skincare routine, but dermatologist at Valley Plastic Surgery, Dr Kate DeAmbrosis, has seen many patients come forward with pre and post-partum skin problems. Common concerns include melasma – or ‘mask of pregnancy’ – and linea nigra, which are pigmentary changes in the skin from hormonal impacts. Whether it’s on the road or in the air, those who suffer with varicose veins should think about how they travel. If you have venous disease or a family history of varicose veins, then you could be at risk of complications, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or a blood clot. The greatest danger is a clot breaking loose and travelling to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. A scary thought, but not one that should stop you enjoying your trip because these easy steps can make a difference: • Put on that tracksuit! Do not wear tight clothes that inhibit movement. • Keep moving. Bend and straighten your legs, massage your calf muscles and wriggle your toes. If you’re taking a road trip, stop every couple of hours for a short walk. During air or train travel, walk up and down the aisles for five minutes every hour.

• Wear stockings. Compression improves circulation by gently applying pressure, stimulating blood flow. Travel socks can be bought from chemists, however, if you’re at risk, you should consider getting compression stockings from a phlebologist.

As time passed, however, we started to understand and appreciate the Italians’ style, with their less structured, more comfortable approach to suiting. We have continued to adopt the Italian sartorial elegance into our own business casual space. We currently create more sport jackets than suits and I don’t see this changing any time soon. I believe Australians have finally settled into our place in the sartorial world.

For your autumn stylish sports jacket, it must be an earthy colour tone and must have texture. A more casual patch pocket may be used to achieve that. I would also recommend using an Australian wool that is milled in Italy to create the perfect blend between both influences.

’ll be brutally honest, when I was in my 20s I didn’t look after my skin well at all. I never washed my makeup off at the end of the day and couldn’t have told you what a serum was used for. Afterall, my skin was great, I didn’t need to worry, right?

With all the coronavirus chaos, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Consider the following your new c-words, with a very different connotation.

KEEP CALM… YOU KNOW THE REST Remember a time in your life when each day felt like a snowball rolling down a hill, collecting and growing and speeding up to become a mammoth beast that felt completely out of your control? You used all your 11:11s, fallen eyelashes and blown-out candles to hope for one thing: that life would just pause.

Layoff. Give you a break. Well, a genie has to have their fun too, right, so although it might not be the most orthodox solution, your wish is granted.

The eye of the storm, the dark before dawn; whatever you want to call it, this is your calm amongst the chaos. Do as much as you’d like or nothing at all because your type of tranquil is the only accepted mode to be in.

Napping, breathing exercises, meditation and yoga will have you freezing with the chill, but if they’re not your vibe, then that’s completely fine too. There is time and this is yours, so spend it however you’d like. Tick-off that list of movies that’s only been growing, dust off the unread books sitting on your shelf or, just be. Exist. The world will keep on turning, but, for right now, you don’t have to keep up. The only item on your agenda is to find your Zen and thrive in it.

WITH A CARE IN THE WORLD Take care of your business, particularly outside your 9-5. Now is not the time to cut ties. If it’s a loose end, it’s being tied up with the expert skills of a scout.

Care for yourself. Care for your family. Care for your friends. Care for your neighbours.

And maybe even spare a care for your foes.

Caring is a strength; emotional connections

may create a potential bridge for pain, but it’ll have to make its way past the happiness marching through on the daily. Albeit extreme, the current situation has only proven that humanity is not self-sufficient.

So, show your appreciation to those who are part of the equation that equals your life, no matter how integral their role or mundane their appearance.

What’s happening in the world may seem grim, but the measures being taken are merely proof that the world cares. Did it have to take a pandemic to make it happen? Ideally not, but here we are, and we care. You may be surprised to realise how many people make your life how uniquely yours it is, until you are made to take a step back, 1.5 metres away.

COMMUNICATION STATION It’s an important value in life generally, and one in which many of us find difficult, despite communication being more accessible than ever. Put down the paper cups and string, it’s time to get real about communicating with others and importantly, with yourself. Pick up the phone – whether it’s still on a hook, in your pocket, or in a box with an orange lid just up the road. Alexander Graham Bell would be so impressed, right? The saying goes “communication is key” and I hate to admit how spot on it is. Once you rattle the key, give it a little to the left, bit more to the right, the door can swing open.

While you’re in isolation, it doesn’t mean technology is and this is your metaphorical key and door. Finally send that text, check-in with that friend, make that phone call you’ve been putting off. If you’re not reaching out and talking to those around you for their

sake, do it for yours. Two minutes on the phone can do a lot to lighten the load on the mind. Saying something outloud, even to yourself is considered communication and it 100% counts. Otherwise, subtle communication can help play a part, too.

Words With Friends, trivia apps, Messenger games and more, greases up the lock so it’s easier than ever for it to turn and the door to open, both ways. Need I mention FaceTime? That one should be a no-brainer.

SIMPLY, JUST COPE The current situation we’re enduring is uncharted. We’re rolling with the waves, seeing the ripples and going again. And, with that, it’s integral that we all understand it’s okay not to be okay. Often, the waves don’t conform like we wanted or dreamt of, but that doesn’t define how wet the water is.

It’s okay to simply just cope and take each day as it comes. Although it’s cliché, the notion has merit. Whether it be a job loss, personal loss or general anxiety, it’s okay to feel deflated, lost and experience a sense of grief. You’re not alone – the numbers show that. The silver linings of simply just coping is that every day is an achievement.

Every day, you’ve succeeded in something – whether it be a minor decision, taking action, being able to have a laugh or using a mechanism to relieve stress that you’ve been practicing. There’re so many successes that can happen within 24 hours and whole lot more to hit out of the park in the 24 after that. Wake-up and hit reset because if any singular day can make a huge difference, those days are nigh. If you’re coping, you’re not failing and therefore, you’re succeeding.

The moment I stepped off the plane and into that balmy North Queensland air, it felt like the two-hour flight had whisked me away to another country, but without having to exchange money or catch a dodgy taxi. Tick! We then started on our journey along the mind-blowing Great Barrier Reef drive and arrived at the Daintree Rainforest river crossing. It was then we found out that the dandy ol’ Daintree is completely off-the-grid and the phone service… zip! Into the wild, we went.

We spent the afternoon walking through the rainforest (literally) in the footsteps of the dinosaurs and cassowaries with our cool-AF tour guide, and my inner David Attenborough was loving it! And the exploring didn’t stop there. We cooled down after our walk with a dip in a freshwater spring, downed an ice cream in 3.5 seconds and finished at our accommodation for the night, Mist at Cape Tribulation. With only three luxurious boutique cabins nestled into the rainforest, it was an experience I won’t soon forget. In hindsight, it was perfect for a honeymoon… maybe I’ll be back one day!

Fun fact: did you know the Daintree Rainforest is 180-million-years-old? The Amazon is only a youngin’ at 55-million. True story.

Stepping onto the river cruise After arguably the most relaxing morning of my adult life laying around on the daybed (no phone reception, remember), we were whisked away to board the Daintree Boatman Nature Tours. I can’t even tell you how much I was looking forward to this.

Not only was the boat solar-powered so we didn’t disturb the river creatures, but our tour guide was also super passionate about the wildlife (namely the crocs). After passing a few log-o-diles, we came across a big fella named Scooter getting some sun on the riverbank. Year = made.

Stepping into paradise The day didn’t end there. We then jumped on a bigger boat (a yacht actually) and sailed to Low Isles – a pint-sized island off the coast of Port Douglas. And we struck Great Barrier Reef gold, with glassy conditions to snorkel beside a sea turtle, an octopus (rare apparently!), reef sharks, colourful fish and a giant clam.

It was magical, there’s no other way to describe it. And only made better seeing the sunset on the sail back.
