IT’S THAT TIME of year: seasons are colliding, mornings are darker, and days end earlier. I have a few pieces of advice when it comes to shopping: buy pieces with colours, prints or fabrics that resonate with the coming season. Get your outfit inspiration from all corners of the globe and diversify. Ensure that you form the building blocks for your wardrobe before bringing in the impulse statement items (insert lust-have Tony Bianco boots here). Australian designers have really put forward a strong case for buying local this season, and I love it. (Page 11) Speaking of designers and fabulous fashion, White Lily Couture has brought romance to our pages this month. Set against the blank canvas of Moda Events Portside, the minimalist design and elegant gowns are the inspiration you need to walk down the aisle of your dreams. (Page 31) Challenge traditional ideas by simply being yourself. Our feature story highlights how to change things up, focus on your happiness, chase your dreams, and adapt to the life you feel is right. (Page 14) Your journey to better skin starts here: stop your face from having a freak-out with the perfect post-celebration skin plan. Check out our featured products on page 55.

THE BOUTIQUE EXPERIENCE Boutique shopping has never been more chic. Emmy-Lou McKean reveals the stores you need to uncover next.
LOVESTORIES | BRISBANE When Marloes Hoedeman realised there was nothing like her idea of mismatched lingerie in the industry, the LoveStories brand was born. Entering Brisbane’s LoveStories pop-up boutique is like stepping into a luxurious photo shoot, complete with chic pyjamas, and fun and mismatching lingerie. The store is an experience all of its own. Marloes believes in quality products above all else: “I’ve never cut budget on [certain] things: the quality of fabrics we use, the packaging, the in-store styling, and photo shoots. Those create a unique and intimate LoveStories experience.” LOVESTORIESINTIMATES.COM.AU
SPELL & THE GYPSY COLLECTIVE | BYRON BAY Fresh from winning 2016 Telstra Australian Business of the Year, modern-bohemian brand Spell and The Gypsy Collective outgrew its original Byron Bay digs. Sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg took up the search for an ideal space for their flagship store. The determined duo wanted a place where they could really create a brand experience for their local customers. “We finally found our dream boutique that we had been pining for all of those years, and a space that is our brand’s true home!” says Elizabeth. “It was a huge project but worth it when you see someone who is a fan of the brand see the store for the first time.”
ALTERIOR MOTIF | NOOSA HEADS Since its inception 13 years ago, Alterior Motif has displayed a visionary approach to fashion and lifestyle. With a popular online store and storefronts in Noosa Heads and Cotton Tree, it’s safe to say that Penny Lane, Director of Alterior Motif, is ahead of the game when it comes to sourcing emerging Australian and European brands. Expect to find a diverse range of on-trend garments and accessories from brands such as Sir the Label, Holly Ryan, OneTeaspoon, and Nice Martin. ALTERIORMOTIF.COM.AU

MBFF IS BACK IN BUSINESS
YOUR FAVOURITE HOMEGROWN DESIGNERS WILL BE BACK IN ACTION RIGHT HERE IN BEAUTIFUL BRISBANE.
Sophie Catsoulis sits down with Lindsay Bennett, the man behind MBFF Brisbane. What sparked the temporary absence and swift return of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane? After 10 wonderful years, it was with deep regret that we were forced to review the financial viability of running the event. A group of designers [was] extremely disappointed and asked that we reconsider. So, during the past year, it was important to reflect on how we could reshape the program within much tighter budgetary constraints without losing its much-loved look and feel. How has the festival evolved over the years? It’s about evolving as an event and creating new elements that will stimulate awareness for the participating designers. It’s about delivering the program in a way that is fresh, exciting and [that] lives up to the high standards that have become synonymous with the Brisbane Fashion Festival over the past decade. Will this year’s festival have a strong focus on supporting local creatives and retailers? The Fashion Festival is and always will be a platform to support the local industry. The festival is about encouraging audiences to shop local and support Queensland and Australian designers.
How do you feel the Brisbane shows compare to their domestic (and global) counterparts? Queensland has so much to offer the fashion industry! Our local designers have a very unique take – everything is a little more colourful, edgier, and has an effortless attitude. What inspired the slogan, “See it. Love it. Own it.”? See It. Love It. Own It. was designed to encourage audiences to shop local, direct from the runway. This year, we are taking this campaign one step further. Following the Group Show, the collections will be available to view (and purchase). What sort of crowds are you expecting? Since announcing the return of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival, we have been overwhelmed with support from designers and the community. I have no doubt that all shows will sell out. Grab your mates and secure your tickets as soon as they are released for sale on June 1. George Wu

CIR CUS Cirque du Soleil performer Steven Bishop talks to Emma Carr about chasing the dream and life on the road.
Photography: Pearla Global Media
“THERE WERE MANY ADJUSTMENTS REQUIRED. BUT AS A RESULT, I AM PROUD TO SAY WE ARE A VERY CLOSE FAMILY. THE KIDS ARE MULTILINGUAL, ADAPTABLE AND CONFIDENT, AND ARE TAKING ON THE WORLD IN THEIR OWN RIGHT.”
“WE HAD A childhood mostly without television, and our parents encouraged us to try anything that interested us.” One of three brothers, Steven Bishop grew up flying model aeroplanes, making pottery and sailing. The multilingual Australian, who graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science from The University of Queensland in 1984, has been performing in Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai for the past 13 years. “After a uni holiday trekking in Nepal and surfing in Southeast Asia, I decided it was time to focus on one hobby, or at least just a few,” says Steven. “I set the parameters: it had to be creative, and it had to be physical.” Steven soon discovered the art of mime. He participated in La Boite Theatre Company’s Fridaynight La Bamba shows before travelling to London to study the theatrical medium. From there, he went on to the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris to learn the art of physical theatre. Steven continued to pick up unique theatrical skills along the way, including comedy, ventriloquism, escapology, and stilt performing. His stunt work saw him earn the position of the Lunar Ghost and Rowan Atkinson’s stunt double in the 2002 film Scooby-Doo. Steven first became aware of Cirque du Soleil through a VHS of Nouvelle Experience, an early show featuring the clown David Shiner. “David’s style really appealed to me and [the show] spoke to me in the theatrical language I had learned at École Jacques Lecoq,” he says. The former dentist was performing at the Las Vegas Ventriloquist Festival in 2001 when a friend (who was performing in Cirque du Soleil’s O) encouraged Steven to send an audition video to the Cirque du Soleil casting department.
Steven remembers his Cirque audition as being like Survivor. “After every exercise, I’d come back into the [audition] room and there were [fewer] people.” Surprisingly, however, Steven says the most difficult part of the audition process was not the physicality. “I had to fill in my personal details – marital status and number of children – and there wasn’t enough space on the form to include all four of my children.” Steven jokes that he considered leaving one of his children off the form until Casting Director Michel Laprise (now one of Cirque’s proclaimed show directors) saw Steven’s frustration. Laprise provided extra paper and assured the hopeful performer that even big families were welcome at the company. Steven was cast as the clown in Director Dominic Champagne’s Varekai. The story follows on from the Greek myth of Icarus, telling the story of what might have happened after he flew too close to the sun. Cirque du Soleil’s show sees Icarus (rather than drowning in the sea below) crash into the volcanic and mysterious forest of Varekai. When life with Varekai began, Steven’s four kids were aged two, six, eight and 10. The performer admits that the adjustment to apartment living and regular relocation was difficult, but says the positives have easily outweighed the harder times. “There were many adjustments required. But as a result, I am proud to say we are a very close family. The kids are multilingual, adaptable and confident, and are taking on the world in their own right,” says Steven. “[My wife] gave up her career to [steer] the boat through the variable seas. She did an exemplary job of raising exceptional humans.” Creating a sense of home in various itinerant environments and keeping their children’s English up to the standard of their Australian peers were just some of the challenges Steven and his wife faced during life on the road. However, this left-offield lifestyle eventually became the norm for the Australian family of six. “We made sure that we always ate dinner as a family and always ensured that there was a consistent supply of Vegemite,” Steven jokes. The Varekai cast member also makes particular mention of the challenge of maintaining regular dental check-ups, and not losing children on the New York and Moscow subways. When asked whether he was able to pinpoint a particular career highlight, Steven answered with
ease: “Performing Varekai at Royal Albert Hall. It is such an amazing historical space – one feels like a true thespian playing there.” The former dentist admits he has considered a return to his previous profession, but after looking into re-registering, Steven found that new administrative requirements had been introduced. “It was going to be much more difficult than making people laugh,” he says. Steven has recently returned to Varekai after a two-month sabbatical performing in Palazzo Hamburg. This performing experience was very different for the Cirque clown. “[It’s exciting] to perform in such an intimate space, where you can see into the eyes of each of the 370 German guests,” he says. If jumping back on tour with Varekai isn’t enough, Steven has also been working on a clown show with a Basque clown director, is writing a lecture series in hopes of inspiring Australian school-leavers, and is currently designing a permaculture project in Ecuador with his wife, Cathryn Luckmann. It’s safe to say he’s not clowning around. READ MORE ONLINE

“I SET THE PARAMETERS: IT HAD TO BE CREATIVE AND IT HAD TO BE PHYSICAL.”
AT HOME WITH NICKY CHARMAN Calexico Director Nicky Charman chats to Emma Carr about decorating inspiration, wardrobe favourites, and the true meaning of home.
Nicky Charman & daughter Lenny.
Is there an intentional theme to your home? The black and white furnishings, concrete kitchen benchtops, and indoor plants make our home feel like a retreat. We’ve created it to be both timeless and functional, with a feel-good vibe. What are some of your favourite pieces in your home? My new Art Deco marble coffee table – a Christmas gift from my husband, Jamie. What inspires you when decorating? I love open, comfortable spaces. I think we have managed to capture a New York loft feel with a touch of a Parisian influence (places I visit biannually with Calexico). Do you feel like your home reflects your personality? For sure. Our home has a timeless but eclectic feel. Do you have a favourite memory from your
childhood home? We grew up on a property near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Stargazing late at night with my two sisters is a very fond memory. When you are not at home, where can we find you? At Calexico – my other baby. My first is our 20-month-old daughter, Lenny. We also have another one on the way in four weeks! If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would that be? San Francisco. I love the mixture of modern and Victorian architecture. The underground music scene, local foodie gems and laidback, free-spirited lifestyle would be incredible to experience daily. What does home mean to you? Home is much more than four walls. Home is a feeling that welcomes you with open arms. READ MORE ONLINE

INTERVIEW: CAMILLA Head Designer Jenna Redfern chats to Emma Carr about the inspiration behind the latest collection, Chinese Whispers. What is the inspiration behind the Camilla Chinese Whispers collection? The inspiration comes from the history, the architecture and the traditional artisans of China and Tibet. We met with artisans and learnt about the methods they use to produce their art and textiles. How are the prints developed? Camilla and I photograph everything on an inspiration trip – usually between 20,000 and 30,000 photos. We then collate all of our treasures and images and the story of our travels starts to emerge as prints. Once we have an idea of what the print is going to look like, we develop our fabrics, embroidery, trims and other surface details. How do you keep up to date with designs? We don’t necessarily follow
trends at Camilla; [we] allow the collection to grow from the traditional designs of the culture that we [are] inspired by. What are some easy ways to accessorise during the cooler months? Layering is a big part of the winter aesthetic at Camilla, and our winter collections always have knits, leathers, and the occasional hand-embellished floor-length coat. What part of your job would people find most surprising? I live part-time in India, where I spend a lot of time working closely with our extended Camilla family, which includes colleagues, suppliers, and our craftsmen and women. We also have 10 rescue puppies there that keep me company! READ MORE ONLINE

THE WIND WILL NOT SERVE Here’s why you have to pave the way to a better career, writes Sarah Taviani. ACCORDING TO A report by the U.S. Department of Labor, 65 per cent of today’s students will be employed in jobs that don’t exist yet. If you think those statistics don’t apply to you, let’s put this in perspective: when I was six years old, Facebook was a faint glimmer on the horizon, Instagram didn’t exist, and moving images embedded in written news articles were something that J.K. Rowling was dreaming up for the Wizarding World. Now almost every company you come across has some kind of social media presence and someone to manage it. Boom. New job created. There’s a Latin proverb: “If the wind will not serve, take to the oars.” Basically, luck will only get you so far; you need to work for what you want. In today’s society, opportunities that you’ve
WAP29752-Style Magazine Press Ad 2017 April_HR.indd 1
only ever dreamt of will become a reality; hobbies can become a profession; and professions can become something you love, if you’re willing to challenge yourself and learn something new. But employment is a two-way street, and employers have their own part to play. Many people will only work for a particular company (or in a particular role) for up to five years. This timeline is not due to indecision on the employees’ part; it’s because most companies can’t afford to offer everything that each staff member needs. If an employer wants to keep their staff for longer
than the average five years, they need to consider whether they’re supplying opportunities for development in existing and emerging fields. If there’s nowhere to progress within a company, it follows that employees will learn all they can, and leave like clockwork. An evolving environment is essential, but it needs to be carefully considered; a system ready to collapse at any moment is not an incentive to stay. However long you choose to stay in one workplace, make it a valuable learning experience. Then assess what you want in your career and, if need be, take to the oars.

CLOSE TO HOME McGrath Estate Agents’ Glenn Bool shares a glimpse of his everyday life. GLENN BELIEVES THAT the sale of a property is more than a transaction and considers every sale to be the beginning of a long-term relationship. He prides himself on hard work and dedication. Glenn’s charming nature and loyal personality make him very approachable and easy to get along with. When Glenn and his partner, Julie, aren’t watching the kids play rugby or netball, you’ll find the coffee-lover appreciating a cup of the finest along bustling Oxford Street. “The lifestyle that comes with being a Bulimba Local is the reason I never want to leave,” says Glenn.
Glenn Bool Glenn and his dog, Gizzy
“The lifestyle that comes with being a Bulimba Local is the reason I never want to leave.” What time does your day usually start? I am in the 5am club – up bright and early! Talk us through a typical weekday. [I] exercise first thing in the morning. If I’m not going to the gym or for a ride, I’ll take Gizzy (my dog) for a walk down Oxford Street and stop for a chat with locals. Then it’s back home for breakfast and to check emails before heading into the office or directly to appointments. You work and live in Bulimba; what are some of your favourite spots in the suburb? It’s great living and working in the area. Bulimba has a tight-knit, village atmosphere that is full of riverside charm. Being able to go out for a casual dinner and then to the movies - the Balmoral cinemas are a local gem! The array of good coffee shops, bookstores and parks are the reasons I call Bulimba home. On weekends, where will we find you? On Saturdays, it’s work, work, work. On Saturday evenings, it’s great to catch up with friends and unwind over a drink, or see a movie. Sundays are a bit like therapy for me. They usually involve a nice bike ride with a close group of friends, then perhaps lunch in the area. A drive to the coast is also nice. SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS Clayfield College is empowering the next generation of entrepreneurial minds. THE NEXT GENERATION of technology entrepreneurs were all in the same room last month. On March 8 (International Women’s Day), the Clayfield College Study Buddy team travelled to Sydney to launch the 2017 Next Tech Girl Superhero challenge. Last year, members of the team were crowned state champions at the Search for the Next Tech Girl Superhero, run by the Tech Girls Movement. Founded by Dr Jenine Beekhuyzen, the movement promotes positive female information technology role models, and raises awareness of career options for girls in technology fields.
Brigette Bloom, Fleur Wrakuale & Rebekah Meyer
The Clayfield College team dined at Google HQ and toured the Australian IBM headquarters in St Leonards. Here, the girls were able to witness some of the work done by the global technology and innovation giant. The team also showcased their Study Buddy app, for which IBM designers conducted usability testing. The girls were then taken through design thinking exercises to further brainstorm and capture optimal outcomes. The strong academic focus at Clayfield College assisted in fostering skills that allowed the girls to
be involved in such fulfilling real-world experiences. Families will be able to learn about the dynamic and contemporary academic and co-curricular programs offered at Clayfield College at the Open Morning on Tuesday, May 16. A student-led tour of the classrooms will be offered to visiting families, as well as a morning tea shared with the Clayfield College Principal, staff and teachers. The lunch menu’s Asian influence comes with a side of modern fusion Katsu chicken burger, pulled pork burger, and coconut salmon
THAT’S MORE LIKE IT The Asian-inspired menu at Moreish Café packs a major flavour punch. INDUSTRIAL DÉCOR IS perfectly complemented by the comfortable alfresco dining area provided at Moreish Café. Located on bustling Logan Road, the café’s outdoor bar table provides the ideal spot to enjoy an autumn Sunday lunch, as well as offering puppy parking for your much-loved furry friend. The funky, rustic venue is situated in the heart of Stones Corner on Brisbane’s south side, and offers an extensive all-day breakfast and lunch menu, filled with delicious goodness. Head Chef Bree Parker describes the lunch menu at the charming café as having a strong Asian influence. Passionate about food and flavour, Bree has had prior experience at wellknown Brisbane destinations Primal Pantry, and Artie & Mai. The popular Reuben bagel captures the heart and soul of the United States, with pastrami, gherkin slaw, Swiss cheese, and a healthy dash of Russian sauce – heaven on a plate. Moreish Café’s stylemagazines.com.au
version of the Reuben is served on a gluten-free bagel for a tasty spin on a well-loved classic that will speak to your heart, soul and tastebuds. Served on a sweet brioche bun, with delectable pulled pork, and apple and fennel slaw, the perfection of Moreish Café’s pulled pork burger will easily impress any burger enthusiast.
Bree Parker & Jeff Zaphir
Another meaty show-stopper is the katsu chicken burger – a crispy chicken creation topped with slaw and wasabi togarashi mayonnaise. Both of these brilliant burgers are served with a side of sweet potato fries. An Asian spin on quesadillas makes for another enticing menu option. This twist on a Mexican must-have is served with cashew cheese, sweet chilli sauce and an Asian salad. For the seafood-lover, the light and fresh coconut salmon packs a major flavour punch. Served on a tortilla, the curiously spicy and creamy sriracha mayonnaise adds an instant kick to the dish. The lunch menu also offers flavoursome vegetarian options with a haloumi gluten-free bagel and a vegetarian nacho dish. Quench your thirst with a smoothie or catch up over an expertly-brewed Campos coffee. Head in for your next weekend lunch date! The Rolling Stones Project
KEEP ON ROLLING
Embrace the music! Enjoy an autumn afternoon of fine wine, culinary delights and musical sensations.
Bernard Fowler will jazz things up at the Brisbane River Jazz Festival. THE STAR-STUDDED LINE-UP set to take the stage at this month’s Brisbane River Jazz Festival will entertain music-lovers and jazz enthusiasts of all ages. One of the biggest names on the event’s roster is The Rolling Stones Project. Direct from their sell-out tour, the six-piece ensemble features current Rolling Stones touring members Tim Ries (saxophone) and Bernard Fowler (vocals). All About Jazz described The Rolling Stones Project as “a captivating interpretation of The
Stones’ songs.” The entertaining set includes a number of Jagger/Richards songs that will easily impress any Stones fan or avid jazz-listener. Another stellar act that is set to excite crowds is celebrated jazz musician Vince Jones. Vince Jones is one of those rare genre-defying artists who creates music without borders. Jones has set the benchmark for Australian jazz artists since his emergence in the jazz clubs of Melbourne in the late ’70s and ’80s. Today, he remains in the top echelon of his craft.
The talented performer will take to the stage alongside longtime jazz favourites Kate Ceberano and Olivia Chindamo. The Brisbane River Jazz Festival is set to be one of the best music events on the city’s jazz calendar. The festival will take place at Newstead’s Waterfront Park on Saturday, April 8. Tickets to the all-ages event are now available for purchase online. BRISBANE RIVER JAZZ FESTIVAL RIVERJAZZ.COM.AU

HAZLETT IS HOME
Favourite thing apart from making music? [Listening] to an unhealthy amount of podcasts. Describe your sound in three words: Rough, nostalgic, ambient. What can’t you live without? Faith. It got me to this point and it’ll get me to the next. What Brisbane music should we be listening to? OKBADLANDS, Niterunner, Golden Vessel.
Brisbane-based musician Hazlett speaks to Caitlyn Spanner about touring, inspiration, and secret shows on the horizon. THE LATEST EP from Brisbane-based musician Hazlett is titled Honey, Where is My Home. Contrary to what the name might suggest, and despite spending plenty of time on the open road, touring around Australia and making music in Sweden, Hazlett knows that he will always be drawn to Brisbane. “There’s something really comforting and warming about calling this city home,” he says. The talented musician has always had music running through his veins. In the third grade, he was handed a trumpet by his teacher and he never looked back. Sneaking into his first Big Day Out as a teenager cemented his love even further.
Of course, Hazlett’s success hasn’t come without its ups and downs. After dealing with selfdoubt and a lack of inspiration, Hazlett gave up and thought he’d never return to music. “I went out and got a full-time job to pay the bills,” he explains. However, his career took off again when a publisher in Sweden discovered an old acoustic video Hazlett had posted online.
“I ran away and poured my heart out in a little recording den in Stockholm,” he says. Having recently wrapped up an Australia-wide tour, Hazlett plans to focus on getting his music out there as much as possible for the rest of 2017. Honey, Where is My Home is the first of three instalments from the Brissie artist. You can expect to see more from this local talent (including some secret shows) before 2017 is out.

You’ve booked the photographer and had your final dress fitting. The menu has been finalised, and the floral arrangements ordered. Now it’s time to turn your mind to your wedding-day beauty preparations. Understated looks continue to triumph this wedding season. The colour palette for autumn is fresh, peachy pink tones, with the trend moving into translucent cranberry lips come winter. Brides are opting for a subtle shimmer on the high points of the face (cheekbones, bridge of the nose and Cupid’s bow) to enhance radiant skin, with a wash of soft metallic hues on the eyelids. Unlike seasons past, soft lips are now a must.

WHAT A SPECTACLE Madonna Rigney Optometry shares tips on stylish eyewear for women of all ages. ANYONE CAN FIND 20 different styles of glasses that will suit them, but there are still some questions to answer. What do you want to project? Who do you want to be? Your glasses make expressing individual flair easy, and remember, style has no age limit.
FINE PRINT Showcase your individuality with a pair of patterned frames. Prints are the easiest way to bring a cool and colourful twist to any ensemble; just add a thin coat of mascara and you’re ready to go.
IN THE CLEAR Translucent and white frames offer the same subtle effect as traditional wire rims or rimless glasses. Both funky and functional, these options will go with almost every outfit and will easily take a look from day to night.
FRAME FOCUS Larger, more structured frames have surpassed rimless glasses in popularity. These flattering, bold options draw extra attention to the eyes.
TURN IT UP Cat-eye glasses, or frames with a slight upward tilt at the temple, will offer an instant face lift. This style suits almost all face shapes and will help define your cheekbones. BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY It’s important to consider your skin tone when choosing new glasses. Coloured frames brighten and add warmth to mature skin. Red frames are youthful, as are browns and burgundies. Colourful glasses will also downplay an all-black outfit.
IN SHAPE Choosing frames to flatter your face shape is essential. For example, narrow, angled glasses best suit a rounder face, whereas squareshaped glasses look best on rectangular faces. With so many options out there, it’s hard to decide which frames are the right ones for you. Get the look you want by choosing a pair that reflects your personality and individual style.

From weddings to corporate events, there has definitely been a shift from the bright, vivid colours of summer to richer, earthier tones. Gold continues to be used as a complementing colour to luxe autumn tones such as burgundy and amber. Incorporating these rich hues in abundance creates the perfect foundation for that special autumn dinner party. Traditionally, visual merchandise displays for autumn contain earthy hues; the only difference this year is the additional elements of metallic touches – bronze and gold add a hint of modernism to any installation. Florals are another great way to incorporate autumn tones for your next event; whether it be a small, clustered posy with romantic tea lights or an opulent, oversized table centrepiece, your guests and clients will be carried away in the colours and warmth of the season.
THE FACE OF kindergarten is changing. The traditional model of short sessional programs offered in traditional standalone kindergartens is moving to government-approved programs delivered in a long day care setting. The Queensland kindergarten curriculum guidelines are used in both traditional standalone kindergartens and in approved long day care centres. This ensures children are exposed to the critical elements of early learning that will help prepare them for their upcoming transition to primary school. The development of more kindergartens in the Brisbane CBD area (such as the soon-to-beopened Goodstart Brisbane Adelaide Street) and neighbouring suburbs means families have more choice and greater convenience. Parents want a kindergarten program that has all the quality of a traditional sessional program – one that will support their child and aid in developing essential skills for life and school, and will also meet their family’s needs for flexibility and work commitments.
ARE YOU READY to renovate? Lately, the majority of our clients has chosen to renovate their existing home instead of selling and purchasing elsewhere. We are also witnessing the increasing popularity of open-plan living. Designer Kitchens has been in business for 27 years. In that time, we have seen many design trends come and go, with the majority of trends originating in Europe. Last year, Designer Kitchens received four HIA Kitchens awards, including Renovated Kitchen over $50,001, and Best Outdoor Kitchen. As a local business, we have our loyal clients to thank for helping us work towards these incredible industry achievements. WARM UP THE WINTER
COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE
MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION
MIXING UP YOUR décor when the temperature drops can be difficult. Thankfully, there are some pieces that will remain on-trend throughout every seasonal change. Armchairs can be a great long-term piece. These occasional chairs will make a statement in your living room, study or bedroom. Pick something that suits your own style and personality. Pink and navy tones are incredibly versatile, and they pair beautifully with greys, as well as natural timbers and rattan tones. A simple armchair is easy to move around if you want to change up your interiors, and can be easily incorporated into new spaces each season. The feature chair can be as small as a butterfly chair and still create interest in a corner of your home. Layering texture with textiles will make the space feel even more inviting. Linen sheath-covered love seats are also very popular right now. Love seats are a little larger than your traditional armchair, which is great if you need a second seat to curl up on when someone else takes up the sofa.
IT’S ALL ABOUT small, handcrafted batches using premium-quality ingredients and single origins. Each participant will receive a gift box of truffles and a 200g bag of Wolff Specialty Coffee Beans. Our upcoming Chocolate & Coffee Tasting Session on Saturday, April 22, focuses on pairing single origin specialty coffees with these artisan chocolates. It’s the perfect Easter gift idea for the coffee geek, chocolate-lover, and those in the pursuit of knowledge.
ON AVERAGE, A potential buyer will make a decision about your house in the first 90 seconds. Most people only stay at an open home for approximately six minutes. The front of your home will make the first impression, and presentation could be the difference between someone hopping out of their car to take a look or simply driving away. It’s also important to remember that the day of the open home isn’t everything. Potential buyers are likely to drive past the property prior to the open home, so you should ensure that your home’s street appeal is taken care of as soon as your property is put on the market. Photos are also extremely important, since many buyers discover properties online. It is worth investing in a professional photographer when advertising your home for sale, and removing all clutter before photos are taken. Making a good first impression is an integral part of selling property. A home styler knows the market and can ensure the preparation for sale is completed to a high standard.

FOOD+DRINK THE RESTAURANT SHOWCASES A WARM, ROMANTIC ATMOSPHERE THAT TAKES YOU AWAY FOR A NIGHT OF INDULGENCE.
Kingfish with grilled corn, sour cream, quinoa and lime
Beetroot, goats’ curd, crispy amaranth and xeres vinegar
FLAVOUR MAKER Massimo Speroni has joined multi-award winning restaurant Bacchus, writes Christie Sutherland. BACCHUS GREETS YOU with a candlelit interior and throws of deep mahogany and marble. Designed by LA-based interiors sensation Tracy Beckmann, the restaurant showcases a warm, romantic atmosphere that takes you away for a night of indulgence. Knowledgeable service and a genuine love of food and wine are the drivers of the restaurant. Dining options include an à la carte menu of signature cuts and flavours, and indulgent degustation options created by new Head Chef Massimo Speroni. The wine list curated by Head Sommelier Andrew Giblin is world-class and perfectly suited to the flavour of the food. Bacchus is and always will be focused on inspired modern Australian flavours, and Massimo’s worldly experience brings a new depth to the menu. Fresh, clean and light classically-created dishes are the stars of what is essentially an edible art gallery. The seven-course matched degustation began 46
with textures of beetroot, goats’ curd, crispy amaranth and xeres vinegar. From there, we moved to the kingfish with grilled corn, sour cream, quinoa and lime, closely followed by foie gras paired with smoked potato, 30-yearold balsamic and seasonal vegetables. Each item on the plate held a fresh flavour. Next, we indulged in the risotto with La Tur goats’ cheese and fresh aromatic herbs. Before we knew it, the perfect seared venison loin with parsnip puree, coffee powder and horseradish was on the table. Cheese was next: Comté Gruyère served with golden raisins and pear chutney on rye. As a cheese-lover, this was one of my favourite dishes; it made time stand still. Just when I thought things couldn’t get sweeter, a dish of lemon and basil syrup, strawberry parfait, lemon cake and peach jelly was presented. Ending the meal with petit fours rounded out the most perfect fine-dining experience. It’s easy to lose your appreciation for food when

surrounded by the current flavour trends. Our tastebuds may play with familiar flavours on a daily basis, but Bacchus manages to turn everything on its head with a classic approach and a constructive uniqueness I have not experienced anywhere else in Brisbane. Looking back at the meals, it seems I could never have sampled so many flavours in one sitting. But it is possible, and the degustation menu leaves you wanting even more, which is a true testament to the sheer perfection of each of Massimo’s carefully-crafted masterpieces. Bacchus, thank you for helping me fall in love with food, exceptional service and intelligence all over again. THE MATT ABOUT TOWN Chef Matt Moran chats to Sophie Catsoulis about all things fresh and flourishing. FOR A PROFESSIONAL chef, you’d imagine grocery shopping to be a monotonous task. But for Matt Moran, it provides an enchanting avenue for expression. “I go to the fruit and veg shop or the butcher without a preconceived idea,” Matt says. “I just go in there and see what’s great, what’s available, what’s in-season. I think that’s the best way to shop – it’s fantastic!” As a result of his upbringing in country Tamworth, local produce is always at the forefront of Matt’s mind.
“Markets are fantastic to go to; you know who’s growing it, that the quality is good and it just tastes better, I reckon,” he says. Matt also brings up a point I had never considered – the romance of seasonal produce. He reminds me of the natural, historical methods of farming, before the days of cold storage. “In the beginning and end of the season [produce is] more expensive and not great,” he says. “But in the middle of the season, it’s in abundance, great quality and at its cheapest, too.” Fruit and vegetables aren’t the only things flourishing this season. As an entrepreneur, Matt is far exceeding even the highest expectations, growing his business one delicious venture at a time. With award-winning establishments located all around Australia, it’s hard for Matt to play favourites, but he did touch on his Eagle Street Pier location: Aria Brisbane is currently in the midst of a revamp. “We’re [giving it] a bit of a refresh,” he explains, without giving too much away. “You know, Aria has always been fantastic. It’s going to be exciting; the menu is going to change.”
As for what’s next for Matt, 2017 is set to be industrious as ever. “There’s always something happening,” he says.

HOSTING ESSENTIALS Emma Carr dishes on dinner-party dos and don’ts. DO YOU FANCY yourself a bit of a whiz in the kitchen? A low-key MasterChef who can construct a delectable dish from minimal ingredients? You may be able to cook, but can you throw a memorable dinner party? When it comes to being an amazing host, there are a few cardinal rules. DO Prepare as much food as possible well in advance. Think of how precious those moments are before the doorbell rings. You might even have the time to pour yourself a glass of wine. DON’T No one wants to shout over music, so avoid cranking the volume on your favourite playlist.
DO Have all the ingredients ready to go before you start cooking. This way, you’ll be able to discover whether you are short on spices before you begin. DON’T It might seem like a good idea to try a new recipe for your guests, but not if you’ve skipped a test run. There are few things sadder than realising you have forgotten a step in the recipe 15 minutes before guests are due to arrive.
DO It’s a dinner party. Use cloth napkins. You can go back to balancing a bowl of nachos on your lap tomorrow night. DON’T Thank-you notes are not needed. But an email or phone call letting your guest know that you enjoyed their company is sufficient. DO Schedules fill up fast. Make sure to send out invites at least one week in advance. A Paperless Post invite adds a mature touch.

You will receive a complete medical examination and ultrasound investigation on your legs, as well as the findings and suggested course of action. Most patients require multiple sessions, usually over a few months, to achieve optimal results. From start to finish, you will be taken care of by me (Dr Nicholas Kemp); we also offer complimentary post-treatment reviews for a year to ensure a procedure’s success. Booking in advance offers you the freedom to choose treatment days and accommodate work and family commitments. Our after-hours sessions are very popular, and the nature of the treatments means there is no downtime. Early booking allows you the opportunity to complete your treatment in the cooler months, when it is more comfortable to wear the compression stockings. Most importantly, it means that your legs will be gorgeous and summer-ready before the next heatwave hits!

Managing your fertility is a process – we need to fully assess the underlying reasons for conception difficulties before we can offer the best treatment. It may also involve surgery to treat problems such as endometriosis; or simple treatments such as artificial insemination, which will allow a more natural conception. Eve Health has some of the most respected and experienced gynaecologists in Australia, so you will be in expert hands. Our team also provide assessment and management of male problems. Eve Health offers speciality fertility, gynaecology and obstetric care to help you conceive and manage your pregnancy.

THE GIFT OF TIME
SORT OUT SNORING
WHILE ON A trip to East Timor with military veterans, I realised that my expertise is a commodity I can easily share with others through the act of volunteering. Offering your services or undertaking professional work pro bono is something that our community desperately needs. Without it, many people and projects would not flourish. Some people see volunteering as a way to give back to others and facilitate change in the world. And for some, it’s a way to develop new skills or build on existing experience. Volunteering provides essential services, and teaches compassion and gratitude. Giving time, donating to charity, or organising a fundraiser are ways you can passionately support causes. Whether you volunteer to gain competence or gain confidence, to make a difference, to meet people, to develop meaning in life, to feel part of a community, or to simply help someone out because it’s the right thing to do, take the challenge. Donating a small part of your day can make a positive difference to someone’s life!
THERE ARE MANY forms of bleaching and whitening available for the skin, hair and teeth. In recent years, as highlighted by the Kardashians, anal and vaginal bleaching have become much more popular. Laser hair removal and waxing completely removes the hair, leaving these areas more exposed and potentially leading to embarrassment about skin discolouration. There are several methods of anal bleaching available, such as our specially-formulated fading cream, chemical peels and laser treatments. At Cosmetic Image Clinics, we use the stateof-the-art Light Sheer Desire Lumenis laser. This treatment usually requires between four and six sessions. Numbing cream can be applied to the area prior to treatment. Maintenance laser treatments are required over time and results may vary depending on your skin tone. We also offer prescription-strength fading cream, which patients are able to apply to the area twice daily.
IS SNORING COMING between you and your partner? Every night, half of all Australian households are affected by disruptive snoring. Many couples decide to sleep in separate rooms – a necessary decision they arrive at reluctantly. But it doesn’t need to be this way. Snoring can occur at any age. Smoking, alcohol, pregnancy and weight gain are significant contributors to the condition, as well as open-mouth breathing, enlarged tonsils and deficient jaw development. Dentists who are appropriately trained to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can assess the problem, instigate referrals and, where appropriate, manage the problem with an oral appliance worn during the night. Obstructive sleep apnea must be ruled out as part of this process. At James Street Dentists, we are highly educated and experienced in this area, and can help you get the care you need. Call in or download our free ebook. Healthy sleep starts here.

ADDICTED TO LASHES Brooklyn Beauty Bar discusses how you can achieve strong, beautiful lashes. HELLO, MY NAME is Brooke and I’m a lashaholic. There, I’ve said it. I just love lashes and am addicted to them. Here are my three top ways to satisfy any girl’s lash addiction: LASH EXTENSIONS At Brooklyn, we offer virtually every kind of lash extension, with the most popular being individual lashes and Russians (small cluster extensions that give extra length and fullness). There’s a myth that lash extensions ruin your lashes but, if applied correctly, extensions do no harm to your lash health. They instead help avoid running mascara and smudged liner, and allow you to look put-together at the beach and at the gym.
LASH LIFTS This non-invasive treatment involves opening the natural lashes upward and outward from the roots, giving a youthful expression. The results last about six to eight weeks. You can also add lash tint or mascara, but most people find they need neither. LASH GROW Lash Grow Enhancer is a natural enhancing serum that nourishes lashes, making them appear longer and thicker. Created by a team of cosmetic scientists, the product’s powerful formula has been clinically-demonstrated to support frail, brittle lashes.
We personally test all of our products before stocking them, and we’ve been gobsmacked by the results of Lash Grow Enhancer. Many of our clients who have lash extensions use this takehome product on their lower lashes. If, like me, you’re a lashaholic and can’t get enough of these treatments, come in and have a chat – I’m sure we will get along very well! Chemical-free beauty is the way of the future; the Organic Index showroom will satisfy all your beauty needs, writes Annabelle Beirne. THE ORGANIC INDEX showroom on Paddington’s Latrobe Terrace immediately fills you with a sense of tranquillity. I recently had the opportunity to interview business owners Rebecca Medcalf, Emma Dowling, and Melissa Krueger. What inspired you to open Organic Index? We love natural, organic and local products; we have always gone out of our way to source products with integrity and transparency for ourselves and our family. The more we learnt about what was available in Australia and New Zealand, the more we saw an opportunity to create a space that really showcased their quality and uniqueness. Three sisters, one business. What is it like working together? To be fair, there are awesome days and not-so-awesome days! The best part is always [having] someone who understands when life gets difficult and helps fill the gaps – we do that for each other naturally. Why is organic beauty so important to you? Natural and organic beauty is a natural extension of a healthy lifestyle. We believe beauty and wellness should be inseparable, and part of

that journey is minimising unnecessary or filler ingredients, fragrances and preservatives. What nutrients does our skin need on a daily basis? Each person varies in skin type and skin condition so daily [regimen is] something that is tailored to each individual. It is really important that skin is hydrated, protected and supported by a great cleanser, moisturiser, and targeted serums depending on the desired outcome. What should we keep in mind when selecting the perfect product for our skin? Effectiveness and ease of use is definitely a big consideration when investing in skincare. We strongly believe in the ethos of less but better. What is a common misconception about organic beauty products? There is a common misconception that organic products are going to be more expensive [and less effective] than the mainstream, which is just not the case. On average, our product range has more active and fresher ingredients than mainstream, and because there are no fillers or preservatives you are getting exactly what you pay for: better quality.

It was a great event held in the Spell Cactus Garden, and we created beautiful flower hair wreaths, makeup and haircare, and generally just enjoyed getting out and meeting the Spell team and all the lovely customers. Can you tell us a little more about the types of events that you host at the store? We love bringing another layer of value to our community [by] hosting Meet the Maker workshops, where you can sit down, have a glass of wine, and be guided through an entire range by the product founder. We also hold makeup masterclasses for specific looks, as well as Mother and Daughter days, DIY facials, and lots of other events. What’s next on the agenda for Organic Index? We are looking to expand our range and open our second shop this year. We are so driven to disrupt this industry in a good way! READ MORE ONLINE

TRAVEL THE JEWELS OF HALONG If Halong Bay is the crown of Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province, the Wyndham Legend Halong Bay is most definitely the jewel, writes Tracy Sinclair. HALONG BAY IS an awe-inspiring sight. The word “prehistoric” comes to mind when standing before the imposing dinosaur-esque limestone karsts and isles that rise from emerald-green waters. Everything around you feels like the set of a Jurassic Park movie. It’s this magnificent view of the UNESCO World Heritage listed site that is the strategic and beautiful setting for the equally stunning Wyndham Legend Halong Bay hotel. Halong Bay’s first five-star hotel by a global chain, the Wyndham Legend opened its doors early in 2016. The USD $40 million property is truly impressive with its luxurious and vast floor-to-ceiling marbled lobby; the adjacent Blue Bay Restaurant features the most dazzling lighting centrepiece, reminiscent of a diamond-encrusted necklace. Not a bad entrance by anyone’s standards. Some hotels use up their “luxury” quota on the lobby, but not the Wyndham Legend. The five-star feeling is present in all of the 217 guest rooms (including the luxurious Penthouse Suite). I love nothing more than walking into a beautifully-appointed hotel room, and the Wyndham Legend doesn’t disappoint. stylemagazines.com.au

TATTOO FROM FANTASY ISLAND WOULD BE TOTALLY ENVIOUS OF THE BREATHTAKING VIEW OF HALONG BAY BY SEAPLANE. The rooms are spacious, complete with a sitting area, full-sized bathroom, luxurious amenities and, of course, more of that knockout view. From your personal balcony, there are a lot of spectacular sites to take in – those towering islands; the double-deck cable car that spans the bay (constantly bustling with fishing boats and cruise ships); and the Bai Chay Bridge and Sun World wheel. One of the best ways to enjoy the view is at night on the pool deck. The bridge and wheel (one of the largest of its kind in the world) provide a spectacular light show every evening from 6pm. The country may be unassuming in many ways, but the high-tech nightly light show is mesmerising, with myriad gemstone colour combinations. After dinner, enjoy a cocktail and marvel at this fusion of man-made structures and some of the world’s most ancient natural wonders.
To really appreciate Halong Bay, you need to take to the skies. I can’t speak for Tattoo, but I reckon the little guy from Fantasy Island would be totally envious of the breathtaking view of Halong Bay by seaplane. In the air, the immensity of the thousands (and I mean thousands) of islands is truly put in perspective. On our seaplane flight, we could see hundreds of boats peppered around the islets and fishing villages. If this journey isn’t Insta-worthy, then nothing is. WYNDHAMAP.COM WYNDHAMHALONG.COM FLYSCOOT.COM TIGERAIR.COM/SG/EN Tracy flew with Scoot airline from Gold Coast to Singapore, overnighting at the Ramada Singapore at Zhongshan Park. She then flew with Tiger Air from Singapore to Hanoi. Tiger Air can also take you from Hanoi to Halong Bay; however, Tracy travelled 3.5 hours by chauffeured coach, which is a brilliant (albeit a little hair-raising) way to experience the passing parade of everyday Vietnamese life.

AMONG THE GUM TREES Escape to the pristine Milton countryside, writes Sophie Catsoulis. WITH THE GOLD Coast just a short trip down the highway, stunning seascapes are no rarity for Brisbanites. And as autumn approaches, our thoughts drift towards getaways more suited to the new season. The Easter long weekend is almost upon us, and there’s no better way to avoid the chaotic commute to the coast than with a trip inland. Soak up the unparalleled serenity of the countryside at the idyllic Milton Surf & Stables. A set of refurbished horse stables surrounded by beautiful native bushland, this property is shabby-chic at its finest. If a country escape isn’t enticing enough, you might be swayed by the fact that the retreat is styled by iconic Aussie designer Collette Dinnigan. Each item in the immaculately-furnished space
“I wanted Milton Surf & Stables to be a country retreat that is relaxing yet stylish.” - Collette Dinnigan is hand-selected by Collette herself. Take the bedspread in the main bedroom, for example – Collette stumbled across it on a trip to Paris. These personal touches add an element of intimacy to an already breathtaking experience. Whether you’re looking to plan the perfect family holiday in the main house or a romantic getaway for you and your partner in the private loft, you’ll find the ideal setting at Milton Surf & Stables.
Situated just minutes from picturesque neighbouring towns, wineries and beaches (if you really can’t live without them), you’ll never be short of something to do. Oh, and did I mention the animals? Alpacas, horses and chickens roam free, providing endless hours of adorable entertainment. MILTON SURF & STABLES COLLETTEDINNIGAN.COM.AU/INTERIOR
