I HOPE YOU’VE recovered from your holiday hangovers and food comas. I spent my break at the Padma Resort Legian in beautiful Bali and I’ve returned revitalised and ready for a fresh start. We’re creatives here and rules are made to be broken so, as usual, I opted not to make any official resolutions. I simply start the year with the best intentions: to eat better, exercise daily and take everything in moderation. If (like me) you need a little help with all three, you can check out our New Year, New You feature on page 36. 2015 was a fantastic year for the Style team, and I loved every second of working with our incredible clients, team and friends to bring you something bigger, better and bolder with every issue. We’re kicking off 2016 – and Style’s 15th year of publishing – with a bang. As always, we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with the latest and greatest. If you’ve got an idea for a story or want to let us know about someone inspirational in Brisbane, please don’t hesitate to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Happy New Year, and welcome to our first edition for 2016.

WE ARE BACK! Well, to you it will be as if we never left, and that’s the way we like it. Japan stole my heart over the holiday period; there’s something about snow that makes you breathe deeper and reflect. Now that we’re all back to reality, it’s time to bring the magic and do what we do best. It’s my New Year’s resolution to put into practice everything I learnt last year. Continual progression is the key to spectacular moments. Four years ago, I was lucky enough to immigrate to Brisbane with my family. I never properly understood Australia Day and what it meant to everyone until I began to call this place home. This feeling of belonging is the inspiration behind our first feature story. Read all about it on page 14. A new year and a new beginning starts with you. Embrace the statement-makers, take time to cherish your loved ones, take chances, be brave and be you. I can’t wait to see what 2016 brings for all of us.

Katherine with Pyrex 100 Year Anniversary Layered Lamington Sponge Cake
SHE TAKES THE CAKE From high school teacher to cake-maker extraordinaire, Katherine Sabbath’s journey is something spectacular. OVER THE PAST couple of years, Katherine Sabbath has rapidly risen to Insta-fame, with more than 213,000 Instagram followers now lusting over her out-of-thisworld creations. Katherine first dipped her toes into the baking world during high school. During those teeth-cutting years, she enjoyed baking for friends and creating food that she loved to eat. After graduating high school, Katherine studied teaching and filled her weekends and spare time with culinary experiments. Teacher by day, cake-maker by night, it was a few years before Katherine decided it was time to take the leap and leave her teaching position to pursue the cake life full-time. But Katherine hasn’t lost her love stylemagazines.com.au
of teaching; she’s passionate about passing on her skills to others, frequently teaching culinary classes that she says are “highly creative yet relaxing and fun.” She loves nature, drawing inspiration for her wondrous creations from the colours and textures in environmental landscapes such as the Great Barrier Reef. In a world of aloof Insta-celebrities, Katherine’s modesty and humble attitude is refreshing, and she doesn’t get caught up in her large Instagram following. “It’s quite overwhelming but I am so grateful there are so many people out there who enjoy following my creations as much as I enjoy making them,” says Katherine. A DAY TO
E T A R B E L E C From our breathtaking natural environment to our productive economy, Hannah Doody reflects on how much we have to be thankful for this Australia Day.
THE SMELL OF charcoaled sausages wafts through the thick, steamy air. Your ears prick at the sound of ice-cold beers cracking open. Perhaps you can feel powdery white sand between your toes, or warm grass beneath your feet. Wherever you are, there’s a game of backyard cricket happening not too far away. It’s January 26. Australia Day. The annual commemoration of the 1788 founding of the New South Wales colony. What does Australia Day mean to you? A day off? Time to listen to Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown? Is it a day to celebrate our people and culture? Or maybe you don’t celebrate at all? 14
It seems that, as Australia Day celebrations become more prominent on the national calendar, the meaning of the occasion becomes more contentious. Every year another debate emerges about the country’s history that exposes our seemingly confused national identity. It can come as no surprise; our collective ancestry spans the entire globe. Whether your family was born here, descended from the first Europeans, entered in post-war immigration or arrived as refugees from war-torn countries, we all lay some claim to our personal ancestry and our identity as Australians. With such a diverse cultural landscape, it’s
only natural that Australia Day means significantly different things to all Australians. No matter how different our celebrations, we should all take the opportunity to reflect on how Australia has developed over the years. From humble origins it has become one of the world's most prosperous and stable free countries. We have a productive economy, high living standards, some of the most liveable cities in the world and an awe-inspiring natural landscape. The very fact that we can openly, honestly and vigorously debate what it means to be Australian without facing persecution is evidence that we live in a lucky country. JANUARY16
WHAT DOES AUSTRALIA DAY MEAN TO YOU? WALLY LEWIS AM FORMER PROFESSIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALLER, COACH AND COMMENTATOR “Australia Day reminds me of just how lucky I am to live in the best country in the world. “Sitting under the tree in the backyard having a barbecue is surely the best way to spend the afternoon. It promotes everything Australian: a great time with good friends in surroundings made more special by our wonderful climate.”
MARGOT SPALDING CO-OWNER AND CO-DIRECTOR OF JIMMY POSSUM FURNITURE AND 2006 TELSTRA BUSINESSWOMAN OF THE YEAR “For most of us, being an Australian is based on our background of migrating here, seeking a better life. Amongst us are those who are escaping injustice or religious or cultural bias in their homelands. “Australia is empathetic in embracing difference. Synonymous with difference is diversity – culture, race, language, religious beliefs – and with diversity comes the wisdom to acknowledge the value and vulnerabilities of the person, and an appreciation that we all can contribute to a stronger social whole. Diversity can unite us more than divide us. Australia Day is about celebrating the diversity that reinforces our humanity. “Australia Day is a day of celebration in my family. I’m also reminded of those who are away from loved ones and family, or those who miss the camaraderie of being with friends from their homelands. So we tend to invite as many people who might be lonely and far from their homes into our home to share food and enjoy just being together. “I always think we gain more from that sharing experience than they do – or maybe it’s an equal distribution!”
BINDI IRWIN WORD ON THE STREET MELANIE GRABSKI, HEALTH PROFESSIONAL
“IT’S ABOUT CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSITY IN AUSTRALIA AND ACKNOWLEDGING THE TRADITIONAL OWNERS OF THE LAND. LAST YEAR WE CELEBRATED IT WITH A BBQ AND MANGO SORBET.” stylemagazines.com.au
ACTOR, PRESENTER AND CONSERVATIONIST “I feel incredibly proud on Australia Day each year. Being a young Australian, lucky enough to have travelled to other parts of the world, I know how very blessed I am to have grown up in such a beautiful country. Australia is so unique, with the most gorgeous wildlife and wild places – so I suppose what it means to me is a celebration of home. “Every Australia Day, we hold an epic party at Australia Zoo celebrating everything Aussie, from music to lamingtons to awesome saltwater crocodiles, koalas and other incredible wildlife that we share our country with! We’re known for our incredible animals here in Australia, so I couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate them and the rest of our Aussie culture than here at Australia Zoo!” 15
“ I don’t sell houses, I sell homes.” Place agent ALEX RUTHERFORD, is a pioneer in her field. Whether showing a family their new home or achieving record sales, her approach is tailored to suit the specific needs for each property, owner and prospective buyers. This combined with her extensive first hand experience as a buyer and seller makes her the ideal partner to sell your home.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL TIGHTS Style chats to Michelle Anderson from Abi and Joseph about how the homegrown activewear brand is inspiring women to lead more active lifestyles. What is your brand’s philosophy? We have a very simple philosophy at Abi and Joseph. We design highly functional women’s activewear without compromising on style. Our range is designed for all activities from low to high impact, taking you from your yoga mat to a gruelling gym workout. How was Abi and Joseph born? The company was founded in Perth in 2006 by Abi White, who owned a studio, taught Pilates and was a classically-trained ballet dancer. The other half of the name originates from the Pilates founder, Joseph Pilates. Abi created Abi and Joseph because, at the time, there was nothing in the market that was comfortable or functional for her clients.
What makes you stand out from other activewear brands? All Abi and Joseph garments are designed in Australia from the highest quality fabrics, which we source internationally. Fabrics are soft on the skin and designed with purpose that will take you from low to high impact activities. You have a long list of stockists throughout Australia; what’s your next move? Abi and Joseph is now shipping worldwide. Our goal is to continue creating great designs that appeal to an international market regardless of seasons or trends. Describe your brand in three words. Unique, feminine, high-performing. WWW.ABIANDJOSEPH.COM

FRESH START, FRESH SKIN
HOW TO: GOURMET BBQ
IN SUNNY QUEENSLAND, we are spoilt for locations that are perfectly suited to events with an alfresco, summertime flair. We’re free to celebrate with tropical, garden, poolside and exotic themes such as a hot samba night and Rio Carnival. With splashes of the tropics (think pineapples, pool toys and pink flamingoes) and cascading greenery on trend in 2015, we look forward to merging these with the resurgence of old-school looks, including bold patterned prints and riotous bursts of colour. This move towards bold statements is now being extended to previously untapped elements, such as lighting. We’re currently seeing an increase in illuminated furniture, multihued festoon lighting and projected imagery, which can be displayed on walls, floors and other fixtures. With so many highly visual and engaging ways to bring your outdoor event to life this season, there is no excuse not to add some extra sizzle to your summertime soiree.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Have you set yourself some goals for your skin health, general health and wellbeing in 2016? Most of us start the year intending to change some aspect of our lives, but we often don’t see it through. This year, try to start the year off right with small and manageable changes to our lifestyle. Resolutions are great, but let’s face it: the more radical they are, the more likely we are to drop them, and feel awful about doing so. Instead, try adapting a few smart habits based on science-supported statistics. Make the goals realistic; skip extreme resolutions in favour of small, smart health changes that you’re more likely to stick to. Don’t be afraid to seek professional advice! There are loads of things out there to help you achieve your health goals. The changes may be small, but they can have lifealtering benefits. Real-life strategies will help actually accomplish goals. Make positive changes to any aspect of your health and your skin will love you for it!
BARBECUING IS A time-honoured Aussie tradition, especially when it comes to celebrating Australia Day. As the popularity of American BBQ cuisine continues to grow, we’re barbecuing more than ever before! And we’re no longer satisfied with simply throwing a snag on the hot plate. With more varied products constantly hitting the market, the backyard chef can easily grill, roast, smoke, slow cook, reverse sear, rotisserie and more. All these styles of cooking can be done in a range of wood/charcoal-fuelled BBQs for the genuine BBQ flavour, or in a gas BBQ for ease of use and cleanliness. Whatever style of BBQ you prefer, there are products available that will expand your outdoor culinary repertoire: asador, water smoker, pellet smoker/BBQ, offset smoker/BBQ, electric smoker, traditional gas and more. Aussie BBQs & Fireplaces will host a cooking event on Saturday, January 9 that concentrates on charcoal barbecuing and low’n’slow. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information.

NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNING
DETOX YOUR WORKPLACE
YOUR WEDDING DAY is one of the most important days of your life. From choosing the dress to creating a guest list and finding the venue, there are a lot of things that need to be organised before the big day. Here are some tips to keep your wedding planning stress-free: • Don’t try to please everyone; make sure you and your partner are happy. • Stick to your budget! Remember to keep some extra money aside for any unexpected costs. • Don’t go overboard on the guest list. • Add a personal touch that represents you as a couple. • Create a social media hashtag to easily find any of your guests’ photos. • Choose in-season flowers for gorgeous lasting blooms and affordability. Book a date with your florist before it’s too late. • Don’t sweat the little things. As long as you are married to your best friend at the end of the day, the wedding was a success! Get in touch with Poco Posy for stunning floral arrangements for your big day.
WE OFTEN START the year with great intentions and forget to address past problems. Here are some top tips to keep those workplace resolutions going strong well into 2016: • Build your own resilience. • Focus on what you value, what brings you happiness, and what you love to do rather than placing unnecessary weight on what others think of you. • Learn the art of assertive communication. Understand your needs and the needs of others, and voice those needs without emotion or aggression. Start by writing down your thoughts to determine what you need. The better you are at articulating it in writing, the more comfortable you’ll feel speaking to someone about it. • Know when to cut the ties. • Know when enough is enough. Recognise when certain individuals, teams or leadership isn’t working and feel confident to do something about it. Starting afresh might be the answer you need!
JAPAN IS NOW more accessible than ever with Qantas offering daily direct flights from Brisbane to Tokyo Narita Airport on their Airbus A330. There are endless things to see and do in Japan. • Uncover the bustling streets of Tokyo, a patchwork of traditional and modern delights. Take a day trip to Mount Fuji or visit the famous snow monkeys. • Stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan in Kyoto and experience Japan’s tradition and culture. • Spend the day exploring the beautiful and peaceful city of Hiroshima and experience the historic sites from World War II. The must-dos of Hiroshima are the Peace Memorial Park, Shukkei-en Garden and Hiroshima Castle. • The port city of Osaka is famous for its modern architecture, vibrant nightlife and amazing street food. Visit Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan’s oldest shrines. • For ski trips, you can’t go past Sapporo. It is set amongst a winter wonderland at Christmas time with German-inspired Christmas Markets and fabulous Christmas light displays.

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS
7 TIPS TO BUY RIGHT
PAINTING THE INTERIOR of your property can be a great way to freshen up your home, but it’s important to ensure you get a great overall finish. There are a few things you can watch out for when choosing a contractor, such as previous client testimonials, and their preparation and application methods listed on the quotation. “Picture Framing” is a common issue caused by paint drying too early. It is critical for the paint to remain wet until the wall is completed in order to have a consistent finish. This is why, when dealing with large surfaces, it’s helpful to have more than one person working on the project. For a high quality overall finish, plastering will almost always be required in high traffic areas and where build quality is not ideal. Build or painting defects will always show up more harshly in areas with critical light (walls with multiple light sources or reflections). Using matte finish paint is a great way to hide these defects. Employing a multi-skilled contractor can save time and headaches when it comes to painting your home.
AS YOUNGER PEOPLE swap “space for place” and empty nesters continue to downsize, apartment living is becoming increasingly popular. You don’t have to compromise to live in a trendy suburb; just keep an eye out for these key aspects: • Open-plan interiors that provide generous living spaces • Contemporary finishes and quality appliances that will make modern living a breeze • Classic neutral styling with luxury fixtures and fittings that won’t date as they age • High ceilings, large windows and doors to provide airflow and natural light • Large private balconies with plenty of space to entertain guests • Ample and hidden storage space to optimise comfort and style • Separation between bedrooms and bathrooms for maximum privacy and dual-living appeal Spacious apartments with superior planning and innovative design will continue to satisfy buyers for years to come.
DO YOU KNOW what it means to be an empowered leader? If you search online, you’ll find plenty of instructions to help you: delegate to your team, build relationships, motivate team members, work corroboratively. Honestly, if that were all it took, we’d all be doing it. Those are just actions – the things you do once you’re already empowered. True empowerment is a mindset. It’s the ability to switch off your inner critic and start listening to your inner cheer squad. If you want to be an empowered leader, get to know yourself and take control of the thoughts you allow into your mind. Understand your beliefs and motivations, and how they influence your actions. Ask your self questions and really listen to your answers. Real empowerment comes from being in control of yourself and being able to manage your situation. The truth is, anyone can become empowered simply by deciding to be. We just have to get our minds to go along with our decision.

5 TIPS FOR A KILLER WEBSITE
AVOID DIGITAL MISTAKES
PEDAL TO PAVEMENT
A WEBSITE IS one of your most important business investments. It’s often the first point of engagement with your business. it provides an immediate introduction to who you are. Keep it functional. Website design should be intuitive and engaging. Brand consistency. Your website should reflect the essence of your brand. Begin defining how your audience perceives you. Make sure design, tone of voice and mood are in line with your brand identity. Easy to read. Use the F layout (top to bottom and L to R) to walk the users through naturally. Get the aesthetics right. A first time visitor will give you five seconds to gain their attention. Images and space play a key role. Have effective calls to action. Wanting more information and not knowing where to get it is frustrating! Make CTA’s obvious. Viewable on multiple devices. These days, websites are accessed from multiple devices, ensure your website is built responsively for optimal display on all devices.
START THE NEW year with a new marketing strategy and ensure that you don’t make these top four digital mistakes: Ignoring the growth of mobile. More and more Google searches are taking place on mobile devices rather than computers. Make mobile a priority in 2016. Using too many social media platforms. Some platforms may not be right for your business. Do some research and see who else in your field is using that platform. Will it really deliver new customers/relationships? Talking to the wrong audience. Successful campaigns know who and where their customers are. Don’t try to engage every single person in every single field. You’re aiming for a successful business, not world domination. Not identifying a USP. Why should people do business with you? The answer lies in your unique selling point. Figure out what it is about your business that’s different to or better than anyone else out there. Focusing on this aspect could be the key to improving your business.
IF YOU’VE MADE fitness or health-related resolutions for 2016, now is the perfect time to take up a new hobby. Make cycling your go-to exercise this year with these simple tips from the team here at Fusion Cycles: Find your fit: Start the new year at one with your bicycle. Riding something that isn’t set up specifically for you can make even the simplest endeavours more difficult. The GURU road fit module will have you positioned to maximise comfort and efficiency for all your cycling adventures, whether you’re suiting up for a casual weekend ride or a Gran Fondo. Suit up: These days, cycling gear isn’t limited to Lycra. We stock clothing from brands such as Black Sheep Cycling and The Pedla (exclusive to Fusion Cycles!). And we know just what you need to help battle the unbearable summer heat in Queensland. It’s pretty simple, really: the more comfortable your ride is, the more time you’ll want to spend cycling! Let’s ride together! Like-minded people sharing their passion.

FASHION SISTERS, SKIRTS, AND SUCCESS Cover girls, Thessy and Yiota Kouzoukas, the minds behind fashion empire Sabo Skirt, tell Leith Wilson what 2016 has in store for them. LIKE CINDERELLA, DYNAMIC duo Thessy and Yiota Kouzoukas are proof that an outfit can change your life. They started out blogging about clothes and began their Brisbane-based start-up, Sabo Skirt, in an unused bathroom. Five years, 1.6 million followers and one fashion empire later, these sisters (and best friends) have no intention of slowing things down. Their latest high-end fashion line, Sabo Luxe, was inspired by a recent holiday. After one look at the crisp, clear landscape and structured architecture of the Greek Islands, their love affair with minimalism was born. The pair launched a preview of the line at NYFW through Fashion Palette, an initiative that connects Australian Fashion designers with the global market. Thessy and Yiota say they had never experienced anything like it. “We are huge fans of New York; it’s a beautiful city. To be a part of NYFW was such an honour. A definite ‘pinch yourself’ moment,” they agreed. The structured silhouettes are the perfect simple yet eye-catching staple for any wardrobe. 28
International supermodel sensation Gigi Hadid has already been seen sporting items from the collection. But the girls won’t stop there; they’re already working towards introducing the line to the Australian market next month. “Sabo Luxe will officially launch in Australia in late February with a dedicated fashion show, website and full range available. We can’t wait to show Australia what it’s all about!” Sabo Luxe isn’t their only project; Thessy and Yiota are set to release a new Sport Luxe and sleep/loungewear range this year. The girls say they’re excited about the new range and will be able to reveal more about it in the coming months. Thessy and Yiota will surely be a permanent fixture in the fashion world in coming years. “We see ourselves expanding the Sabo Skirt empire, with several wholesalers and continuing on with our online ranges. We would also like to see Sabo Luxe on more US celebrities as we grow our presence overseas,” they said. Living and breathing everything fashion, these successful sisters are definitely ones to watch!

Benjamin Ringuet, creator of the eponymous label Ringuet, spoke to Caitlyn Spanner about his latest fashion collection, musical inspiration and the label’s recent celebrity interest. FROM A YOUNG age, Benjamin Ringuet searched for a purpose in life. Dabbling in drawing, painting and creating music, he was always an artistic being. But Benjamin had a deeper desire: he wanted to help and inspire people through creative expression. He says that fashion was an easy transition because he viewed the body as a canvas to portray wearable art. “There is something very real and fulfilling in knowing that your creations contribute to other individuals’ special moments and memories,” Benjamin says. The label has quickly gained the support of Australian celebrities such as Carrie Bickmore, Rebecca Judd, Dannii Minogue, Scherri-Lee Biggs, Jules Sebastian, Livinia Nixon and Sam Frost, developing a strong relationship with TV channels 7, 9 and 10. Ringuet can now be found in select stores throughout Australia, the US, Latin America, the Middle East and Europe. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for Benjamin. Before the label took off, he was working multiple jobs in order to learn as much as possible about the industry. As a student, Benjamin says he would regularly skip classes to spend time in boutiques, trying to understand his craft and customer. “I would save up all my money and travel to Sydney or Melbourne to walk the streets and introduce myself to boutiques,” he says. Benjamin found that buyers kept asking for something different. After one unsuccessful trip, he had a defining moment that changed the course of his brand aesthetic.
“I had a window seat on the return flight home and it was dark outside and raining. The plane took off and I was staring out the window and the city lights began to sparkle with a beautiful array of illuminated colour. I took out my notepad and started to design.” The latest collection, The Way You Love Her, features the beautiful and unique digital prints for which Ringuet is renowned. Benjamin says that the way he approaches art is very similar to his interpretation of music, “One does not have to be a seasoned musician to understand the genius of an artist such as Jimi Hendrix. You just have to listen. There is no debate or question on whether his music and lyrics work – they just do.” Benjamin draws other inspiration from being surrounded by people and conversation in public spaces, and complex equations. He hopes to inspire creatives and sceptics to see beauty through organised chaos. Benjamin believes that colour is an important part in any woman’s wardrobe, as it is a tool used for self expression. “Women will continue to have colour in their wardrobe as long as there is a desire to emotionally share and validate their inner beliefs to individuals they love, admire and respect,” he says. So what is next for Ringuet? Benjamin’s aim is to continue to build a strong foundation in South East Queensland, before expanding nationally and internationally. Benjamin says he hopes to continue building a business that is based on the ideology of self expression, experimentation and inner belief.
Fast Five with Benjamin:
Modern or classic? Classic. Describe Ringuet in three words. Unconventional, emotional, inspirational. Ultimate place to live? Brisbane. Favourite place to relax in Brisbane? The Blue Poppy coffee shop in Morningside. Ultimate collaboration? Tame Impala.

PYJAMAS BY DAY Would you dare to don your PJs at work? What about on a date? Caitlyn Spanner investigates how the fashion elite pull off this dreamy trend. LABELS SUCH AS Gary Bigeni, Ginia and Thursday Sunday are taking “I woke up like this” to a whole new level with their range of daytime pyjamas. Blogger Margaret Zhang, model Lily Aldridge and even the Olsen twins have been rocking this look on the streets. We are giving it the Style tick of approval; however, there are a few tricks to pulling it off. We’ve taken cues from the catwalk so you can embrace this cosy and tongue in cheek trend. BUTTON UP! Take your look from night to day with short- or long-sleeved options. Style it how you would any normal shirt: roll up the sleeves and leave a button or two open around the décolletage. Pair with wide leg pants for a next-level look. LUXURIOUS SILK Forget flannelette; silk is the reigning fabric for daytime sleepwear. Whether you’re sporting a beautiful silk shirt or a daytime teddy, there are few limitations to this luxe texture. COMPLETE CONTRAST The key to pulling off this trend is contrasting the oversized, relaxed loungewear with more luxurious pieces. Statement heels, opulent earrings and bold makeup will complement your look perfectly. Ginia

HEAL YOUR HEELS
KNOW YOUR BROWS
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR SKIN
DURING THE PARTY season, heels become the go-to shoes for many women. But after all the soirees, your favourite pair of high heels can become your arch nemesis. Normal walking motion coordinates the foot and calf pump, contracting the calf muscles and propelling blood up the deep veins. High heels change the natural walking motion, shifting the weight to the forefoot and causing the calf muscles to remain contracted. This decreases the filling of the foot and calf veins and causes venous blood pooling. Don’t worry! You don’t have to stop wearing heels altogether. But you should make an effort to stretch your calf muscles to ensure good blood flow, mix up your footwear and give your legs a break every so often! Going for a 30-minute walk each day will also ensure that your calves are pumping blood back up the system. Your legs (and your waistline) will thank you. If you have any health concerns, make it your New Year’s resolution to get your veins checked.
BROWS COME IN all different thicknesses, colours, shapes and sizes! Everyone’s brows are different, and all the different types can leave any girl wondering, “What am I?” First things first, you need to step back from the mirror and leave your brows alone! This will let them grow and return to their original form. This will help you discover the way the hairs grow and where the arch is, as well as the natural colour and the thickness. This is also why visiting a brow professional is the best option! Many ladies try to fill in their brows themselves and end up with a shape that doesn’t suit their facial structure. Ask your brow expert how to fill in your brows to enhance your natural features, rather than working against them. They will be able to keep the essential shape that is authentic and unique to you. The Brow Bar’s Arch Angel Brow Experts will ensure that your brows match you! A consultation with one of these experts can help you get to know your brows.
CARBON DIOXIDE DOESN’T just put the fizz in your soft drink; it has also been shown to help improve the elasticity and appearance of skin, especially dark rings under the eyes. Carboxytherapy is a simple non-surgical cosmetic treatment that administers small amounts of carbon dioxide into the subcutaneous tissue (located just under the skin’s surface). Our bodies naturally produce carbon dioxide, but the administration of additional gas can be used to cause a slight disruption of the red blood cells and increase the blood circulation to the treated area. The treatment was first discovered in the Royal Spas of France in the 1930s, when bathing in pools of carbon dioxide-rich water was shown to speed wound healing. This therapeutic treatment has recently landed in Brisbane at Cosmetic Image Clinics. Carboxytherapy can be used to target skin flaccidity, dark under-eye circles, stretch marks, sun-damaged skin and cellulite. It can also be used in conjunction with CoolSculpting services for spot reductions of stubborn fat.

LIFE IN THE SLOW LANE
RETURN ON INVESTMENT
DE-STRESS YOUR LIFE
LIFE IS BUSY because we allow it to be. For many it’s a badge of honour to spend the day rushing around, eating on the run and tackling mountainous to-do lists. Sadly, these habits often put us on autopilot and we don’t have a chance to reflect on what we are doing, why we’re doing it, or the impact of these routines on our lives and the lives of others. Each new year sees people resolving to restructure their lives, with an increasing number now looking for more meaning and fulfilment, aiming to live a simpler, downshifted life. Adopting a less-is-more approach focused on wellness and emphasising quality of life is central to the slow living movement. Slow living embraces a work-life balance, pursuing wellbeing, self-sufficiency, and a purposeful lifestyle. In terms of consumer behaviour, it means making purchases based on brand attributes and values, emphasising social and environmental ideals. As you think about the new year and your life, consider connecting more to your self, your values, nature and those around you.
WHAT TYPE OF return on investment is really important for the new year? Now, if you’re thinking that this is not a very fashion-oriented issue, I want you to think about this in terms of your clothing purchases. Calculating the cost per wear of a particular item, is simple: just divide the amount you paid by the number of times you’ve worn it. But there are other ways to determine how much an outfit is truly worth. You should always consider the most important element: how does this item of clothing make you feel? If an outfit makes you feel confident, youthful, and/or professional, that experience may be far more important than the amount of money you choose to spend. Think of it as an emotional return on investment. So the next time you’re about to purchase something and wondering whether you want to pay that much, try basing your decision on how it makes you feel rather than monetary value. The new year is a good time to organise your great-feeling wardrobe.
A DOCTOR ONCE told me that it was essential for health and wellbeing to have at least three holidays a year. He also reminded me that a holiday doesn’t have to be a world expedition. Holidays that enable us to focus on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing are mandatory if we want to live a long, healthy life. Here are three holiday ideas to help de-stress your life in 2016: Do a gourmet trek. Walk on deserted beaches and scale remote mountains without forsaking a comfortable bed and great food. Gourmet trekking is the perfect relaxing experience. Luxuriate in a lodge. You don’t have to travel far to find an awe-inspiring lodge in a rarefied location. Australia has some iconic lodges surrounded by stunning scenery! Have a paddock-to-plate experience. NEW YEAR’S HEADACHE RESOLUTION

imagine looking like yourself only better
Is this the year you are going to do something about your headaches and migraines? KNOWING HOW TO confidently manage debilitating headaches and migraines is the key to keeping your New Year’s resolution. Bertrand Doeuk from the Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic says that he often sees people treating secondary issues rather than focusing on the primary, underlying cause. He reports that research has shown a link between experiencing chronic headaches and migraines and having an irritated and sensitised brainstem. The brainstem is located in the cervical spine. According to Bertrand, the main culprits causing brainstems to become hypersensitive are previous

injuries to the neck or head, and poor postural issues. When the brainstem becomes sensitive, it can produce headache and migraine-like pain. Bertrand explains that there are now safe and effective treatment solutions available to desensitise the brainstem and significantly reduce or stop headaches and migraines. “The best thing about this treatment is that it does not require any surgical intervention, electrical devices or even medication,” says Bertrand. He explains that treatment is highly effective if the patient’s headache and migraine pain can Evelyn Orford be reproduced and resolved by applying
specific pressure along the upper three vertebrae of the neck. If this can be achieved in the first consultation, Bertrand reports that there is a high probability that the patient’s headaches and migraines will be able to be significantly reduced, if not stopped. If you have any concerns about your headaches or migraines, make an appointment with the Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic today.

STYLE IT RIGHT
SPRAY DRY SHAMPOO DIRECTLY ONTO THE ROOTS OF YOUR HAIR, WAITING TWO MINUTES TO LET THE PRODUCT ABSORB THE OILS FROM YOUR SCALP.
Ever used dry shampoo on unwashed hair without success? The team at Toni & Guy The Valley share how to get amazing results from a bedhead’s best friend. TOP STYLIST ADAM Nicholas and Art Director Junella Hettig at Toni & Guy Fortitude Valley have the inside knowledge on how to use dry shampoo to achieve the best “day off” hairstyles. Spray dry shampoo directly onto the roots of your hair, waiting two minutes to let the product absorb the oils from your scalp. Then brush with a soft bristle brush and style. If you have oily hair, start the process the night before so that the product can keep absorbing overnight. Repeat the process in the morning for the best results. For brunettes, Label M Brunette Dry Shampoo is the perfect way to liven up your colour. Spray
directly onto the scalp to help hide those stray greys between colourings. You can also use this technique with our Coloured Powder Sprays in pink, purple, blue or red. No matter what your hair colour, these dry shampoos will add a fun twist to your style. “I love using the purple powder spray at the roots of the hair. It has an awesome effect,” says Adam. “You can even just spritz the ends of your hair for some on-trend ombre.” If your hair is dirty, pair the dry shampoo with
Label M Texture Volume Spray to help perfect any style with little fuss. When styling wet hair, add Label M Sea Salt Spray and let it dry naturally, adding more spray for extra volume and texture. If you’re having trouble achieving the looks yourself, feel free to visit the team at Toni & Guy The Valley and they will be happy to share their tips and advice. BILLYKART RACES INTO WEST END! Elizabeth Best takes Ben O’Donoghue’s newest Brisbane offering out for a spin.
THERE’S A FAIR bit of buzz around Billykart in West End. For starters, it’s the sister restaurant to Billykart Kitchen in Annerley, owned by celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue. Then there’s the fact that unlike its sibling, only open for dinner on Fridays, this restaurant is open for nosh every night. And just when that sounds like more than enough reasons to visit, there’s the added bonus of Billykart Provisions, a deli filled to the brim with breads, cheeses, charcuterie and other delicious morsels. Billykart Mark II is also tackling the notoriously tight breakfast/brunch/lunch race in the area, so it has some stiff competition. Frequent diners at the original venue will be familiar with the signature style of meals: full of flavour without being extravagant, and always focused on keeping as many products local (and in most cases house-made) as possible. We’re told they make nearly everything used in their dishes in-house, from the nut milks to seeded bread and clotted cream. We decide to take a peek at lunchtime, and it seems pleasantly bustling for a weekday. The atmosphere is funky casual, with the trademark neon sign welcoming us in. The walls are adorned with deconstructed billy
kart pieces and vintage windowpanes of coloured glass, all making for an inviting visual. Our first dish consists of corn fritters so light and fluffy it’s a surprise they don’t float right off the plate. They’re perfectly complemented by the creaminess of the avocado and the piquancy of the heirloom tomatoes, with a kick of chili to round it off. The Billykart potato waffle croquet madame is the stuff of hangover heaven: picture a potato waffle topped with ham, cheese, béchamel sauce and finished with a fried egg. It was a bit too heavy for us the day we visited, but we suspect it would be the greatest meal alive after a long night out. The standout on the mains is definitely the picanha, a smoked rump cap with burnt onion, erva mate Béarnaise, farofa and kale. The tea flavour (erva mate) takes the Béarnaise to a whole new level, blending well with the deep, smoky flavours of the perfectly-cooked meat. We’re told this is the signature dish, and we couldn’t think of a more fitting way to represent the flavour of Billykart West End. DIY INDOOR HAVEN Elle Raison chats to Arc + Family’s Ashleigh Kelly about the beauty of indoor plants and how to put your green thumb to use. BRINGING THE OUTDOORS inside is a lot easier than you might think. With the right choice of plant for your home, and with a bit of TLC, you can freshen up your living space with some greenery. Ashleigh Kelly, plant lover and one of the masterminds behind personalised pot plant business Arc + Family, says, “Bringing plants indoors brings so much life and warmth to any space. They really help make a house a home”. According to Ashleigh, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when buying any plant. “Be sure to check what plants are going to suit your home and make sure you have a well-lit space.”
PERFECT PLANTS FOR BRISBANE: FIDDLE LEAF FIG Water: One cup every seven to 10 days. Light: Filtered light. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves. Fertiliser: Feed regularly with a weak liquid fertiliser in the warmer months. Special notes: Once it’s in position, try not to move it as this will upset your tree. Wipe the leaves with an old sock and milk to polish the leaves to perfection. BIRD OF PARADISE Water: Keep the soil moist but make sure the pot drains well. Light: Lots of bright light and direct sunlight in a warm room.
Fertiliser: Feed regularly in the warmer months. Special notes: Bird of paradise plants are poisonous to animals so keep them out of the reach of your four-legged friends. SWISS CHEESE PLANT Water: Keep the soil moist but make sure the pot drains well. Light: Lots of bright light but keep clear of direct sun. Fertiliser: Feed regularly in the warmer months. Special Notes: This plant can get quite big; make sure it has plenty of space to grow. ABSOLUTELY AOTEAROA! There are endless tourist options when travelling across the ditch. Experience the true Kiwi way of life (from a Kiwi’s point of view) with these essential New Zealand experiences. WHEN WINTER WINDS down, Kiwis flock to the river edge and attempt to catch hundreds of teeny tiny clear tadpole-like fish to fry into crispy whitebait fritters. Wash it all down with a can of iconic L&P and you’ll be saying “Choice as, bro!” before you know it! After your hearty meal of fush and chups, hunt down a local ice cream shop to treat the family. You won’t be able to resist Goody Goody Gum Drops ice-cream, which has a classic bubblegum flavour and small gummy lollies sprinkled throughout. If you’re after a more cultural experience, a marae stay will provide great insight into Māori life, including the language and customs. Don’t forget to try the local cuisine such as hāngi (food cooked using heated rocks in a pit oven), boil up (pork bones slow-cooked with pumpkin, potato and water cress) and Rēwena (a bread cooked with flour and potatoes). 50
For a city take on food, do as the locals do and head to McDonald’s. Celebrate your surroundings with a serving of the much-loved Kiwi Burger. It’s a delicious combination of beef patty, egg, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, onion, mustard and ketchup. It will come as no surprise that life in metropolitan areas such as Auckland and Wellington is vastly different to Kiwi life in the regional areas, particularly in rural New Zealand. To experience regional life as a local, travel away from the city and look for opportunities to go camping, fishing, boating, hunting or tramping. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to serene bush, beach and lake options. However much local living you manage on your trip, don’t leave the country without experiencing Vogel’s bread. This small piece of dense bread is best toasted with lashings of butter and a slither of Marmite. JANUARY16
