OVER THE PAST 18 YEARS, SUE AND KEN LEWIS HAVE SHARED THEIR SHAWCLOUGH HOME WITH OVER 20,000 HEDGEHOGS. FOUNDED BY THE COUPLE IN 1991, ROCHDALE HEDGEHOG RESCUE HAS SAVED THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF SICK, INJURED OR ORPHANED HOGS.
I
was recently lucky enough to meet the hospital’s 160 prickly patients, not forgetting the dog, five cats, eight hamsters, two chinchillas and Mayo the Barn Owl. I was amazed at how much things had changed, having first visited Hedgehog Rescue, as a school girl, in 1995. Back then, the hedgehogs had taken over Sue and Ken’s spare bedroom, but they have now moved to a purpose-built hospital, adjacent to the house. Sue explained that several years ago, a lady from Norfolk read about the charity in the national press and decided to leave them a generous donation in her will. Her kind gesture has allowed for the extension to be built, to house the growing number of animals. The hospital is always busy, with members of the public bringing in hedgehogs at all hours of the day. Whilst I was there, the

RSPCA brought in four tiny, orphaned hoglets, rescued from Salford. Their mum was nowhere to be found, after her garden nest had been disturbed. About to open their eyes for the first time, Sue thought the babies were around 12 days old and should, hopefully, be released back into the wild within the next 12 weeks, after some much-needed TLC. I was then introduced to Henry, the blonde hedgehog, who was found as a young baby, in a frozen puddle of Sue Lewis with the recent baby arrivals water. SUE’S THREE GOLDEN RULES: 1 – Hedgehogs are strictly nocturnal animals, so do not ignore a hedgehog that is out during the day. You need to call the helpline, but first you need to confine the hedgehog, in a deep box, with a towel. Put the hedgehog somewhere quiet and safe (eg. a shed or garage) and then ring Hedgehog Rescue on 01706 860904 for more advice.

2 – Do not take a hedgehog from the wild and put it in your garden! having been a long serving member there, I really wanted to do it. It has been great re-associating myself with the club and seeing old friends. Many of their sons are now playing at the club, which is great to see. I love going to watch the matches and socialising with the spectators. It gives me a lot of pride to see Home2Home’s name attached to a club that means so much to me.’
When Tofiq was approached to become the club sponsor it was an opportunity he just couldn’t turn down. Tofiq explained, ‘I was ignited by the idea of sponsoring a club that I loved as a youngster. With the credit crunch, it probably wasn’t the most sensible business move, but

Did you enjoy your day of pampering? My friend Emma and I had a wonderful time at The Retreat. Never before have I felt so spoiled and pampered; the relaxation boudoir with all it's plush sofa beds and cushions was lovely to spend time in between treatments - chatting and eating lunch. The steam pod and hydrotherapy pool were so relaxing, and the staff were all very friendly.
What was your favourite part of the day? My favourite part of the day was my ‘Twinkle Toes’ treatment... I'm so proud of my sparkly Peacock blue toe nails now! And the facial was amazing... oh I can't choose!

VICTORIAN COURTS WERE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR, AT ROCHDALE TOWN HALL. A REENACTMENT EVENT MARKED THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSON'S ACT 1909. THE ACT FORMED THE BASIS OF THE MODERN YOUTH JUSTICE SYSTEM IN ENGLAND AND WALES, WHICH INTRODUCED JUVENILE COURTS, ABOLISHED THE DEATH PENALTY FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16 AND MADE CHILD NEGLECT AND ABUSE A CRIMINAL OFFENCE.

efore 1909, the courts treated children like adults, resulting in harsh sentences for minor offences. Touchstones Local Studies produced a display with documentary evidence of the trials of local children and their punishment, which included whipping and imprisonment, along with hard physical labour.. The harsh reality of the Victorian system was brought to life by the reenactment of trials from 1872, in the original criminal court room of the Town Hall, nowadays The Council Chamber. Children from Heykids Amateur Dramatic Society, local actors and actresses, real magistrates and court officials gave realistic performances dressed in Victorian costume. They deserve much credit for their superb acting skills, especially the children. We saw two brothers portrayed, aged ten and eleven years, whose 'crimes' were 'larceny' of apples and plums, valued at three pence, albeit damaged goods scavenged from the ground. The brothers were sentenced to whipping, imprisonment and hard labour, away from their families for months. A young girl of seven was accused of begging and again sentenced to imprisonment. 16

Poverty was rife and many poor children were 'ragged' and went bare-foot. We witnessed the case of Henry Catlin, aged nine years, who stole a pair of shoes, valued at three shillings, because his feet were sore. Again, he was sentenced to whipping and imprisonment with hard labour. Other offences brought to trial included the theft of onions valued at three shillings, a rabbit worth three pence, a watch valued at three shillings & sixpence and two pies and a bottle of ale worth four pence. In all cases, the court handed out shocking and inhumane sentences to the children. In comparison to the Victorian scene, visitors could meet local magistrates and see how the youth justice system operates today. Displays in the Great Hall depicted how children have been treated in the legal system over the past 150 years. The successful event was organised by Rochdale, Middleton and Heywood Magistrates Bench, through it’s ‘Magistrates in the Community Group’. n Margaret Clay

T
he mill is one of only three ancient scheduled monuments in Rochdale; the other two being the stretch of Roman road and one of the canal bridges. The original mule-spinning mill (1892) was powered by engines Victoria and Alexandra, before it was destroyed by fire in 1916. After the war, a new ringspinning mill was built and the engines were refurbished. In 1985, the mill was largely demolished, with the engine and boiler houses being all that remained. A year later, the Ellenroad Trust acquired the Whiteless Beam Engine and, in 1992, this was put into steam. The engines, boiler house and its 220-foot chimney were saved. Many local residents have fascinating memories about their time working at the mill or remembering their parents working there. At a recent event, organised by Milnrow Literary and Scientific Society, it emerged that in the 1960’s, when workers were bussed in from the Wigan area, people can remember working alongside Clive Powell, who went on to become better known as Georgie Fame. It is hoped 18

to the steam era to capture treasured memories like these, as an aural history project, called Mill Memories. Ellenroad is kept alive and working today, thanks to enthusiastic volunteers, from the Ellenroad Society. They operate the boiler and engines, opening the site to the public on steaming days. In December 2008, the mill received a grant from ITV’s People’s Millions competition, which has allowed for the rescue and restoration of a new steam engine from Halifax. The grant has also allowed the museum to introduce a new project in conjunction with local schools. With continued local support, Ellenroad is hoping to become a recognised tourist attraction for Rochdale. Councillor Irene Davidson, the Chairperson of The Ellenroad Trust said: “Ellenroad is one of Rochdale’s hidden gems and an important piece of Rochdale’s heritage. For a great
local and good value day out, a couple of hours here, followed by a trip around nearby Hollingworth Lake should hold something for everyone.” Bernard Rostron, Vice Chairman of the trust added: “The museum is a real labour of love and we’re working hard, along with the council and other partners, to turn it into a vibrant and viable tourist attraction. There is more work still to do, but with the support of people across Rochdale and the North West, we will be able to grow and grow. To have the world’s largest working steam engine on your doorstep is a huge asset and something we should all be proud of.” The enormous steam mill engine is in steam and open to the public on the first Sunday of every month, turning from midday to 4pm. pril this year saw the launch of a CD 'Telling Tales in School' an Oral History Project, undertaken by a team of year 8 students from Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College. They interviewed people in and around Newhey and Milnrow, recording stories of their childhood, schooldays, growing up, work experiences and family life. The students, aided by Andy Kelly, an Oral History Facilitator, are to be highly commended for their roles as interviewers and also the interviewees for revealing their personal memories. The young people gained an insight into life forty, fifty and sixty years ago. They were told of stricter school days, teachers with canes, hard times in the war years with rationing, life in the cotton mills etc. Yet all interviewed recalled many happy memories; the freedom of playing in the streets, family events, special occasions and even embarrassing moments. The stories are all very interesting; sometimes humorous, sometimes moving. The project is a valuable record of the changes in everyday life from one generation to the next. THE TERCENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF JOHN COLLIER, KNOWN AS TIM BOBBIN, THE LOCAL POET, DIALECT WRITER, CARICATURIST AND ARTIST, WAS CELEBRATED IN 2008, WITH A FESTIVAL ORGANISED BY MOOREND DEVELOPMENT TRUST AND FUNDED BY THE HERITAGE LOTTERY FUND. THE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS PROVED SO POPULAR IT IS HOPED THE FESTIVAL WILL CONTINUE AS AN ANNUAL The recent publication, 'Rants, Rhymes and EVENT. Reflections, Portraits and words from a Lancashire village in celebration of Tim Bobbin' was commissioned by MoorEnd Development Trust and managed by Cartwheel Arts. John Collier exposed the wrongs, injustices and hypocrisy of his age in his satirical verses and drawings.
This book contains a selection of his works, alongside which are the personal stories, comments, thoughts and feelings of local people today. Like Tim Bobbin, some participants are harshly critical. The subject matter covers a wide range of topics including politics, class, religion, work and 22

family life, even the local pub scene. We discover things are not much different from Tim's day. To quote from the splendid introduction by the novelist Trevor Hoyle 'Sadly, the world doesn't seem to have got any better, or grown wiser, or kinder, in 300 years. Particularly apt is Tim's poem 'The Statesman'.
There are portraits of the writers, superbly drawn by the artist Geoff Read, who edited the book with the poet John Lindley. Some of the contributors express their views in verse and in dialect, retaining the local tradition. The book concludes with a splendid poem by John Lindley, entitled 'The Spirit of Tim Bobbin'. This enjoyable book is another wonderful result of the Tim Bobbin Festival. nce you’ve decided to have a go, you must first decide on the best position for your basket. Do you want it beside your front door, outside your kitchen window, high up to avoid vandals, or somewhere else in you garden. Now fix a suitable length bracket or hook onto the wall, fence, eaves etc, to support your basket. Next, decide on what type of basket you would like. A lot of people simply buy a ready-planted basket at their local Garden Centre and that’s fine, however planting your own makes it far more personal and you will definitely enjoy it more. Baskets can be made of plastic, wicker, rattan or traditional moss. Whatever material you choose, always buy as large as you can. Small baskets can look great in the shop but are harder to keep watered, soon 26

become root bound, quickly dry out and never flower for as long as a bigger basket; 14” to 16”+ are best.Choice of compost is also important; you need it to be lightweight, but also not dry out too fast. A specialist compost, such as ‘Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Compost’ or a good ‘Tub and Basket Compost’ (with moisture holding granules added) are best.
In an open, bright location the chance of flowering plants is far greater so before proceeding, decide on a colour scheme. The simplest baskets may contain just one type of plant, such as Busy Lizzies, Trailing Lobelia or Trailing Petunias (Surfinias) and can all be stunning. For the more adventurous, a mixed basket is more challenging. Get ideas on colours and textures from other baskets, or at the Garden Centre.
Most baskets will have a plastic inner liner to help reduce the speed of drying out, however, traditional moss baskets (which you make using moss and an open mesh wire basket), should be made with a thin layer of plastic bin liner between the compost and moss.
Once your basket has been planted, water it well to settle the compost and establish it in a sheltered spot for about a week, before hanging it in its final position.
You are now ready to plant your basket, and a bit like painting a picture, the choices are endless. However there are a few basic decisions to make. Will the basket be in a sunny or shady spot? The best plants for shade include Busy Lizzies, Begonias, Ivy, Golden Creeping Jenny, Variegated Dead Nettle (Lamium), amongst a range of mainly colourful foliage plants. Perhaps you want to use edible plants? Strawberries, trailing tomatoes, low growing herbs and salad crops all do well in hanging baskets.
Hanging baskets dry out very quickly, so check how light the basket is daily and water it accordingly. Similarly, it is essential to use a good liquid feed such as Phostrogen, Miracle-Gro or a seaweed based feed, applying as directed. Also, remember to remove dead flowers, as failing to do this can reduce the flowering life of the basket. I
n 1881, Fred Duerr lived with his wife Mary, at Moss Cottage off Bamford Road, Heywood. Fred had just started to work as a grocery commission agent when he had a life-changing meeting with John Butterworth, the buyer of Heywood Cooperative Society. During this time there were worries about all sorts of unsavoury additions being put into food, instead of pure ingredients. Indeed, one of the principles of The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers was “pure food at reasonable prices, not adulterated”. The Heywood buyer was experiencing similar difficulty and complained that he was not able to obtain preserves of sufficiently high quality. He asked Fred, if his wife Mary, whose jam making skills were legendary within the locality, would consider supplying the Co-operative. “I will take all you can make” he promised.
At first, all the cooking was done by Mary in her Heywood kitchen, with Fred trundling the jars of jam in a handcart, to the Heywood Co-operative. However, the business became so successful that he soon ran out of storage space. In 1884, Fred purchased a house in Guide Bridge, North Manchester, which had a small warehouse attached. It proved to be unwieldy, so Fred raised the capital to build and equip a new factory in Deanhead, Guide Bridge, which was still standing in 1997. In 1890, the company moved to Old Trafford, and in 1893 had a new larger factory built by the company A. Pearson, for the sum of £1,315.16s.4d, where production continued until 1996. Their current 70,000 sq.ft. warehouse, in Floats Road, Wythenshawe, is capable of holding 6,000 pallets of finished goods; a 28

Duerr’s is now run by the family’s fifth generation, brothers Mark and Richard Duerr, who ensure that the traditions begun by their great-great-great grandmother Mary, are adhered to today. The pioneering company introduced vacuum sealing in 1905 and continued to grow from strength to strength, despite two world wars and the depression. In 1989, Duerr’s diversified and entered into the peanut butter market. They also began manufacturing Whole Earth peanut butter, which has become the second most popular brand in the UK. In 1991, the company were the first to use tamper evident ‘button caps’ and shrink sleeving on their products. Duerr’s currently produce everything from jams and marmalades to fruit curds, peanut butters, fruit fillings and condiments; with the emphasis on quality ingredients, innovation and manufacturing excellence. The company have been back in the news recently following their decision to relaunch breakfast favourite, Manchester Marmalade, a brand they first introduced in the 1950’s. The distinctive black and white-labelled jars have been introduced in Greater Manchester Tesco stores, with the hope that they will prove popular enough to become a regular product on shelves nationwide. The relaunch is also helping a great cause, as profits from every jar will go to Forever Manchester, a project by the Community foundation of Greater Manchester to create a £4.4million fund to support local schemes. n

Over the last tw o and a half years, Littlebo rough artist Walter Kersha w has been keeping the loca l connection with Duerr’s, b y working on a giant mural, w hich includes Duerr’s, Kello ggs, Rank Hovi s and Mancheste r United. He has painted the famous fruit group, which D uerr’s introduced as a successful promotion in th e 1920’s and 1930’s. At the ti me, customers were required to send in 20 Duerr’s labels and in return received a cop y of the colourf ul fruit picture. W alter is also busy preparing for his next public exhibitio n, which opens at Sale Town H all in Mid September and will be showin g for 5 months.

Coronation Street’s popular newcomer, Craig Gazey (Graeme Proctor), first trod the boards in 1987, with Rochdale Infirmary Players. Now 26 years old, Craig has already worked with the world-famous Royal Shakespeare Company, landed himself a part in the nation’s favourite soap and even bagged himself a British Soap Award! At the recent Soap Award ceremony, where he picked up a gong for Best Newcomer, Craig remembered how it all began. On national television, Craig personally thanked the Rochdale Infirmary Players for giving him his first part as Mini Rambo, aged five years old.

recently caught up with Craig and after a trip to Falinge Park High School, where he made his acting debut, we made our way up to Hollingworth Lake. Craig was reminded of how he used to spend every Boxing Day rowing on the lake, along with his family who still live in the local area. Thanks to Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre, we were able to take a boat out, and make the most of a glorious sunny day on the lake. Whilst Craig was hard at work rowing, we discussed fire starting, lovestruck fans, the red carpet and, of course, the cobbles.

how would you describe graeme proctor? Craig: Graeme’s an eccentric chav! He’s not a bad boy, just a bit crazy. He means well, but he tends to get himself into sticky situations. He met David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) whilst they were both in prison. Graeme was inside for arson and dodgy dealings! But now, he genuinely wants to be a good citizen. He’s working at the butchers and setting up his gardening business. He likes spending time with people and talking a lot. He does seem a bit stupid and some people have likened him to Kirk – but Graeme’s quite switched on. I think he just enjoys being difficult and eccentric… a lovable rogue!

are there any similarities between you and graeme? We have a similar quirky sense of humour. I’m a bit mental like him and like to wind people up. what was your first acting role? I first got into acting when I was five years old. I was an eccentric playful little child; always miming to songs! My stepmum, Lynn, worked at Rochdale Infirmary at the time and used to be involved with the Infirmary Players who put on shows at Falinge Park High School. She had a video of the first three pantomimes she had been in and I used to watch it over and over. I was fascinated by it, so my mum asked the director, Dr Lewis, if I could be in a show. He wrote a part especially for me – I played Cinderella’s bodyguard Mini Rambo; complete with the army trousers, fake tanned chest, red bandana and war paint! have you always had perfect comic timing? I worked in theatre for four years before joining Coronation Street, which helped me learn how to make people laugh. Theatre is the best place to learn acting skills and comic timing, so I am really glad that I did it first. I hated watching my first episode of Corrie because I really thought I overacted. I watch it now though because it’s important for me to find that middle ground; charisma but hopefully not overacting.

Asked if he had any experience, Graeme (having just been released from prison) replied, “well I have worked in a very large kitchen… in a very large establishment”. Ashley asked, “Have you used knives?” to which Graeme replied, “Oh yeh…lots”. do you enjoy working so close to home? Before Corrie, I had been living in London for a few years, so it’s good to be back up north. I love living in Manchester and being able to see my family.
who would you like to see graeme have scenes with? Becky Grainger, because I get on really well with Katherine Kelly. Graeme and Becky are really similar and I would love to see them have a storyline, either as friends or enemies. I can’t see them dating though. It would be great if they brought in another loudmouth chavvy girl, especially for Graeme. graeme has had some great one-liners, which is your favourite? It has to be when Graeme first walked into the butchers to ask Ashley for a job: “I
will we ever catch you on reality shows such as i’m a celebrity or celebrity big brother? Reality television is one of those things you try not to watch but you have to. It sounds clichéd but I didn’t get into acting to become a celebrity, that’s not what it’s about for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the lifestyle that comes with it and the red carpet…although it freaks the hell out of ‘Lovable rogue’ Graeme Proctor me! But as an actor, I think it’s important

for me to keep an air of mystery; people have to believe in the character. If I went on reality tv, people would know everything about me. I would probably do a one-off show though; something to do with cooking.
what are the rest of the corrie cast like? I used to live with Mikey North (Gary Windass) and I am good mates with Jack P Shepherd (David Platt) and Steven Arnold (Ashley Peacock). All the cast are great though. what has been your favourite scene, since joining the street? Setting fire to the Windass kitchen was a lot of fun!
onto the actual street was weird at first too, but I’m getting used to it now.
what are your plans for the future? I like not knowing where I will be or what I will be doing in a few years time and I just hope to do an eclectic mix of acting work. Although, I would love a proper home on the street – especially with Roy and Hayley! n do you get recognised? I get recognised a lot but everyone is friendly and it’s nice that people enjoy what I do. I do have a couple of crazy fans though. I got a message from a girl I have never met saying, ‘I can’t be sure but I think I love you’!

When I was a kid, people never used to say ‘when are you going to be in a Hollywood movie’, it was always ‘when are you going to be in Corrie?!’. PANTOMIME IS A FORM OF THEATRE VERY DEAR TO MY HEART, SO I WAS DELIGHTED TO MEET UP WITH ANN RHODES, WHO HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH ROCHDALE INFIRMARY PLAYERS SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1981.
D
uring these 28 years, thousands of pounds has been raised by members of staff and friends, all of which has bought much needed medical equipment for the Infirmary. The first pantomime, staged back in 1981, was the brainchild of Dr J D Lewis who was then Locum Registrar in Orthopaedics. The idea stemmed from the need for specialist equipment, which at the time would have cost £2000; a sum the hospital simply didn’t have. A young thirteen year old boy, with an ununited fracture of the tibia and fibula, was a patient at the time. His mother started fundraising to buy the equipment he required, but the hospital couldn’t afford. Dr Lewis had some amateur dramatic experience and put forward the idea of 34

putting on a fundraising one night review, involving any willing staff. The idea quickly escalated, from a one night review, into a week-long pantomime! Lots of enthusiastic staff volunteered and the Chief Executive promised that if enough money was raised to buy the equipment, the Trust would pay for the maintenance of it. Cinderella was the chosen pantomime and after successfully raising £2000, Rochdale Infirmary Players was born.
Each year a new team of actors and crew are recruited to stage the production at Falinge High school. Costumes and scenery are begged and borrowed, with Proscenium, in Littleborough, supplying scenery free of charge. The production still costs around £4000 to stage so funds have to be raised before the show can go on each year. As a tribute to Dr Lewis the finale song is always ‘There’s No Business Like Showbusiness’ and every year the show must go on! n

nable to find suitable premises to house, what was then the first purpose built private nursery in Rochdale, they decided to take the adventurous step to build their own. Despite some objections at the time, they went ahead and built the nursery in the spacious gardens at the rear of their converted cottage on Featherstall Road, in Littleborough. The entrance to the nursery is now on William Street, at the end of a quiet culde-sac where parents can safely bring children into the Nursery, avoiding early morning traffic. Since opening in 1989, the Nursery was extended in 2003 and has undergone many changes with regards to how it provides quality childcare for pre-school children. The Nursery can accommodate up to 60 children and has a purpose built baby unit. Tinkerbell has three separate areas for different ages, 0-2 years, 2-3 years and
their pre-school room, which is situated upstairs and can accommodate 24 children from the age of 3 years and 6 children in the holiday club for ages 4-8 years.

yOunG entRePReneuR PutS BAnDS On tRAcK tO SucceSS Local musician, George Webster, started playing in Wardle High School Brass Band at just eleven years old. He went on to play in local rock bands and is currently a member of the band, The Skyline, which is where his keen interest in studio production began. He started by making demos with his band and taking an A level in music technology. When it came to deciding what he wanted to do with his life, George immediately knew that he wanted a career in music technology and, with his family’s help, was able to set up his own recording studio, Underground Recordings. ‘I felt pressured into going down the university route, as many young people are, but I decided to set up the business instead… it just goes to show that a degree isn’t always the way to go’ says George. Since then, the studio has welcomed The Skyline, Strong Current Music, Twelve, The Disappeared, Peter Reeves (Toby), Paper Hearts, Paul Lovett Cooper, Lights Low and Wardle Anderson Brass to name but a few. George still plays in a first section brass band, Wardle Anderson Brass, which allows him to work with totally different genres of music and styles of recordings. Alongside working with all genres of music, specialising in progressive rock from signed and unsigned bands, George hopes to pursue a career in film/video game music and sound effects. He is already on the right track, having just finished recording the music for a short New York based film. In the future, he also hopes to help local bands get noticed by running a music venue in the Greater Manchester area. George is very much in favour of getting young unsigned bands ‘out there’, with a good recording to back them up: ‘I know first-hand how difficult and expensive it is to get high quality recordings, and they are essential in order to get reviews and recognition’. To make it easier for budding musicians, Underground Recordings offers great quality recording at a very reasonable price. George also offers his own services as a percussionist. 44

Twice Baked Cauliflower Cheese Soufflé With a Red Onion Salad

meThOd 1 Bring a pan of salted water to the boil, add the cauliflower and cook for

Take 6 ramekin dishes and lightly grease with the knob of butter – place a few florets of cauliflower in the base of each one. For the soufflé mixture – melt the butter in a saucepan, add the flour and cook for 1 minute, slowly pour in the milk stirring continuously until thickened, remove from the heat, stir in the cheese until melted, leave to cool for 5 minutes then mix in the egg yolks. Whisk the egg whites until light and fluffy – mix half the whites into the cheese mixture, then fold in carefully the remaining half, add some seasoning and nutmeg as you fold.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool, they will sink a little but don’t worry. Turn out of the ramekins, place on a tray and place in the fridge until ready to use.

As I write, the full details of the scheme are still being thrashed out but it looks like the scheme will state that the vehicle being scrapped must have been registered in the UK on or before 31 July 1999, currently be either taxed or on SORN, be MOT’d, and have been registered to the current owner for the last 12 months. Alistair Darling has allocate d £300million for the scheme which will run until May 2011 or until the money has run out, with the chancellor using the increase in VAT receipts on the sale of new cars to fund the scheme. If you are looking for something a touch bigger, its hard to look past the Kia Cee’d. It might not be the sleekest design in automotive history, but it comes with a range of good engines, a watertight seven year warranty and a growing reputation for build quality. With the £2k discount prices start at around £9,000 for the 1.4 which looks like a good deal to me. If you really want to be green, then there is only one car I can FieStA
deservedly received rave reviews from us critics thanks to its sharp design, ultramodern interior and sharp drive but the new ECOnetic version is a little bit special. Using the same ideology as the Volkswagen Bluemotion range, Ford has used some clever aerodynamic tricks and tweaked the engine to reduce emissions to a staggering 98g/km of CO2. However, The VW uses a tractor-like 3-cylinder 1.9 engine which provides plenty of grunt but is rather vocal in doing so while the Fiesta uses a 4-pot 1.6 diesel which is much more refined and won’t trouble members of the noise abatement society quite so much. At a smidge over £11k with the scrappage incentive taken into account, Ford claim that this is the cleanest 5seater car available. Now, in this financial climate it’s not hard to negotiate £2,000 from the list price of any car, particularly the larger hard-to-move models. St Ann's Players recently presented their spring production; the spoof comedy, Murdered to Death. the play is set in the 1930s and the action takes place during a country house weekend. As we are gradually introduced to the characters, it becomes apparent that several possible plots are emerging, with various members of the cast being lined up to be either a corpse or a murderer! Once the dastardly deed has taken place, we meet Constable thomkins, and Inspector Pratt who more than lives up to his name.
Andy McKay, as Inspector Pratt and Ian Mansfield, as Bunting the Butler, stood out in this production but they did have some of the best dialogue and action. they were well supported by lynda Kent, as Miss Marple and Dave Stopford, as a somewhat young, Colonel Craddock. Peter Dignan, as Pierre, had a consistent french accent and was ably partnered by Joanne Frost, as his girlfriend elizabeth Hartley-trumpington. the production was enhanced by stage manager Charles lees and his team, with a realistic and workable set. the script by Peter Gordon, is clever and funny, but I felt the production did not seem to get as many laughs as it perhaps should have done. Despite this, the full house found it an enjoyable night out, but sadly due to the church hall refurbishment we will have to wait until Autumn 2009 for the next production.

Players from rochdale Ladies Football Club will be swapping the football pitch for the long road this sum mer, as they take part in this year’s springhill Hospice Midnight Walk. The ladies-only 13mile (or 6-mile) trek will take place on saturday July 18th 2009, kicking off from Middleton arena. Last year, walkers raised a staggering £23,000 for springhill Hospice and organisers are hoping to attract even more ladies this year. Fundraising Manager, Ian Jenkins said: “Having the local ladies football team support us this year has been invaluable. ROCHDALE WOMAN OF THE YEAR Sue impressed the judges with her contribution to music, in particular her long standing dedication to Rochdale Youth Orchestra, as a teacher and conductor. She is also heavily involved with the Rochdale Youth Festival of Music, Speech and Dance, founder of Rochdale Music Society and a member of Northern Baroque Orchestra. In her acceptance speech, Sue told the guests she was “overwhelmed” to be the
Woman of the Year. She said: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured with this”. Hospice chairman Margaret Geoghegan MBE proposed the loyal toast and Christine Webb, the hospice chief executive, said: “It is always a delight to see so many friends and supporters, looking wonderful, merging at this great Town Hall to raise funds for Springhill Hospice.”

Over 100 guests recently enjoyed a true Greek experience at Demetris Cafe and Bistro, in littleborough, with a 10course meze buffet of traditional Greek cuisine, followed by Greek dancing to live Bouzouki music. Guests even did their own dishes, Greek style, by smashing them on the floor! the Greek night raised £1,250 for Medequip4Kids, who are funding more than £20,000 of equipment for rochdale Infirmary Children’s Unit. Medequip4Kids community fundraiser, rachel Allen, said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at Demetris Cafe and Bistro, for working so tirelessly to make the Greek night such a success. It was a wonderful night and the food was fantastic. the amount of money raised for Medequip4Kids was incredible.”

PeDAl POWer HItS tHe StreetS OF rOCHDAle British Cycling has announced the dates for one of the UK's top leading road race series for 2009 and once again it will be bringing the elite Men's Circuit race Series to rochdale. the rochdale Grand Prix will take place in rochdale town centre on Wednesday 1 July and the evening will include two races, the support race at 7pm and the elite riders at 8pm. this is the fourth year in a row that the exciting, national event has taken place in rochdale and a high quality field of elite racing cyclists is expected. the rochdale Grand Prix is sponsored and organised by link4life, the rochdale Boroughwide Cultural trust. It will start and finish from the Butts in rochdale town centre, with entertainment from stalls and stands from 6pm-9pm.
twelve year old rochdale actress, Shannon Flynn, has only recently finished making her debut in Macbeth at the royal exchange theatre, Manchester and has gone straight onto the set of the new series of Waterloo road. Shannon, who has never missed an episode of the BBC rochdale-based drama, is over the moon to be appearing in it. She recently called in to see her friends at Starstruck theatre School in rochdale, where she attended drama classes for four years.
